Linguistic Gap Analysis

06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — 2 Timothy (English → Burmese)

Purpose and Scope

This analysis identifies where Burmese lacks ready vocabulary for 2 Timothy’s theological content, where existing Burmese vocabulary is “crowded” by competing Theravada Buddhist and folk-religious semantic content requiring active fencing, and where transliteration versus paraphrase decisions must be made. It extends the Romans baseline translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json and directly informs 08_core_glossary.md.

Full-book coverage statement: This analysis spans all four chapters of 2 Timothy. The core passage (3:14–4:5) is the theological anchor of the curriculum but not the boundary of this study. Every chapter is reviewed below; chapters contributing no new terms beyond those already captured are explicitly marked “reviewed, no new terms.”

1. Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Ledger

ChapterLoad-bearing contentNew terms/doctrines surfacedStatus
1Greeting (grace/mercy/peace formula); Timothy’s inherited faith (Lois, Eunice); fanning the gift into flame; spirit of power/love/self-control; not ashamed of the gospel; suffering for the gospel; the entrusted deposit (παραθήκη) guarded by the indwelling Holy Spirit; Onesiphorus and mercyπαραθήκη, φυλάσσω, ἐνοικέω, ἔλεος, πνεῦμα δυνάμεως…, ἐπαισχύνομαι, σωτήρ, ἐπιφάνεια (first coming), ἀφθαρσίαCovered — see §2, §4
2Transmission chain (Paul→Timothy→faithful men→others); soldier/athlete/farmer; “remember Jesus Christ, risen, seed of David” (core gospel summary); the word not bound; endure/reign with him; false claim that the resurrection has already happened; rightly handling the word of truth; vessels of honor/dishonor; the Lord’s servant, gentleness toward opponents; repentance and the devil’s snareπαραθήκη (transmission link), πιστός, ὁ λόγος οὐ δέδεται, ὑπομένω, ἀνάστασιν ἤδη γεγονέναι (false claim), ὀρθοτομέω, γάγγραινα, μετάνοια, διάβολος, παγίςCovered — see §2, §4, §6
3Last-days vice catalogue; form of godliness denying power; deceivers going from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived; Jannes and Jambres named as OT-tradition opponents of Moses; Paul’s own persecutions and rescue; “all who desire to live godly will be persecuted”; sacred writings known from infancy; core passage begins (3:14): continuing in what was learned; Scripture able to make wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus; all Scripture God-breathed and profitable; complete/fully equipped for every good workἔσχαται ἡμέραι, εὐσέβεια/μόρφωσις εὐσεβείας, γόης, πλάνος/πλανάω, διωγμός, ἱερὰ γράμματα, θεόπνευστος, ὠφέλιμος, ἔλεγχος, ἐπανόρθωσις, παιδεία, ἄρτιος, ἐξαρτίζωCovered — anchor chapter, see §2, §3, §4, §6
4Core passage continues (4:1-5): solemn charge before God and Christ the Judge of the living and the dead and his appearing/kingdom; preach the word; reprove/rebuke/exhort with patience; sound doctrine vs. myths and itching ears; be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist; Paul’s summary: fought the fight, finished the race, kept the faith; the crown of righteousness from the righteous Judge to all who loved his appearing; personal closing (Demas forsook him; Alexander the coppersmith; Luke alone; the cloak and books; rescue from the lion’s mouth; the Lord will rescue him into his heavenly kingdom); doxology; final greetings and grace benedictionδιαμαρτύρομαι, κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς, κηρύσσω, λόγος (τὸν λόγον), ἔλεγξον/ἐπιτίμησον, μῦθος, κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν, νήφω, στέφανος τῆς δικαιοσύνης, ἀγών/δρόμος, τηρέω, ἀποδίδωμι, ἀγαπάω τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ, ἐγκαταλείπω, ἀνάλυσις, σπένδομαι, ῥύομαιCovered — anchor chapter, see all sections

No chapter is silently omitted. Chapters 1–2 establish the suffering/transmission/entrusted-deposit vocabulary that chapters 3–4 (the core passage) presuppose; all four chapters are treated as a single interlocking terminological system.

2. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix

DoctrineAvailable Burmese TermsWeaknesses / GapsRecommended Strategy
Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scriptureဘုရားသခင် မှုတ်သွင်းတော်မူသော (theopneustos, coined compound); ကျမ်းစာတော် (graphē); သန့်ရှင်းသောကျမ်းစာများ (sacred writings); အပြည့်အစုံ လက်နက်တပ်ဆင်ပေးထားသော (exartizō)No native single word for “God-breathed” exists; the coined compound risks being flattened by hearers into generic literary “inspiration” (as one speaks of an inspired poem). Separately, Scripture’s authority-by-divine-speech competes with the Tipitaka’s authority-by-the-Buddha’s-own-enlightened-insight (paññā) — a categorically different ground of authority that Burmese readers may default to.Retain the coined compound exactly (do not shorten). Mandatory theologian-authored note at every occurrence stating explicitly: Scripture’s authority rests on God speaking through human authors, not on any human author’s own attained insight. Never let θεόπνευστος stand without ἐξαρτίζω’s sufficiency claim (3:17) nearby — the two verses form one argument and must be taught together.
Perseverance under Sufferingဒုက္ခဆင်းရဲခြင်းကို ခံခြင်း (kakopatheō); ခံနိုင်ရည်ရှိစွာ တည်ကြည်ခြင်း (hypomenō); ရှက်ခြင်းမရှိ (epaischynomai); နှိပ်စက်ညှဉ်းပန်းမှု (diōgmos)ဒုက္ခ is the First Noble Truth term — the universal, impersonal unsatisfactoriness of conditioned existence, to be transcended by detachment via the Eightfold Path. Bare use risks importing an entire escape-oriented soteriology exactly opposite the passage’s point (suffering embraced, not escaped, for Christ’s sake, united to a personal hope of future reward).Retain the term (no viable substitute exists) but never leave it unqualified. Prefer compounding with an explicit object, e.g. “ခရစ်တော်၏ သတင်းကောင်းအတွက် ခံရသော ဒုက္ခ” (suffering endured for the gospel’s sake), fencing the term contextually every time rather than relying on a standing footnote alone.
Guarding Sound Doctrineဒေသနာ (didaskalia); ကျန်းမာသော ဒေသနာတော် (sound doctrine); အပ်ထားသောအရာတော် (parathēkē); ထိန်းသိမ်းစောင့်ရှောက်ခြင်း (phylassō); ဖြောင့်တန်းစွာ ကိုင်တွယ်ခြင်း (orthotomeō)ဒေသနာ is the standard word for a monk’s dhamma-sermon; its authority model is teacher-centered and, across the Theravada commentarial (aṭṭhakathā) tradition, understood as legitimately reinterpreted and expanded over centuries — the opposite of “guard unaltered.”Retain per established-tradition-authority rule (do not coin an alternative that would break cross-document consistency with the wider Myanmar Bible corpus). Require a standing translator note at every occurrence contrasting fixed apostolic content with an evolving commentarial tradition, and always pair ဒေသနာ with the guarding vocabulary (ထိန်းသိမ်းစောင့်ရှောက်ခြင်း / အပ်ထားသောအရာတော်) so the fixedness is never left implicit.
Faithful Transmission of the Gospelအပ်ထားသောအရာတော် (parathēkē); သစ္စာရှိသော (pistos); ဘုရားသခင်၏နှုတ်ကပတ်တော်မူကား အနှောင်အဖွဲ့ မရှိ (word not bound)No native concept of a fixed legal “trust deposit” returned exactly as given; the culturally available model is oral guru-lineage transmission, where content development across generations is normal and expected — again the opposite emphasis from 2:2’s chain (Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others).Use the banking/legal-deposit illustration explicitly in teaching notes (something left in trust must be returned unchanged, not “improved”). Positive bridge: Timothy’s own faith-lineage through Lois and Eunice (1:5) is a genuinely faithful analogue to the multigenerational faith-transmission that is culturally resonant in Burmese family structures — use this as the illustrative anchor rather than an abstract legal metaphor alone.
The Charge to Preach the Wordဟောပြောလော့ (kēryssō); နှုတ်ကပတ်တော် (logos); အလေးအနက် မှာကြားခြင်း (diamartyromai); ပြစ်တင်ဆုံးမလော့ / အပြစ်တင်ရှုတ်ချလော့ (elenxon/epitimēson); တိုက်တွန်းနှိုးဆော်ခြင်း (parakaleō)ဟောပြော is the generic verb for any public address — a political speech, a monk’s sermon, or a lecture — and carries no built-in marker of delegated, sovereign herald-authority versus a personal reflection offered for consideration.Never let ဟောပြောလော့ stand alone as object-less; always pair with နှုတ်ကပတ်တော် (“the Word,” specifically God’s own message) as its direct object, and reserve διαμαρτύρομαι’s judicial solemnity (4:1) as the frame that governs the whole imperative — the charge is delegated and witnessed by God and Christ, not self-initiated.
Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Daysနောက်ဆုံးသောနေ့ရက်များ (eschatai hēmerai); သမ္မာတရား (alētheia); ဒဏ္ဌာရီ (mythos); ဘုရားဝတ်ကို ကိုးကွယ်ခြင်း (eusebeia); မာရ်နတ် (diabolos); လှည့်ဖျားသူ (goēs/planos)This doctrine has the densest concentration of crowded semantic neighborhoods in the whole letter (see §3 below) — every one of its anchor terms collides with an active competing framework: sammā-vocabulary, Māra-cosmology, jataka-legend genre, and cyclical kappa time.Retain every established term (tradition-authority rule prohibits new coinages here); require mandatory standing theologian notes at every occurrence of သမ္မာတရား, မာရ်နတ်, and နောက်ဆုံးသောနေ့ရက်များ without exception, since these three carry Critical/High collision risk individually and compound when they co-occur in the same passage (as they do throughout ch. 3).
Assurance of Rewardဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း၏ အောင်သရဖူ (crown of righteousness); စစ်ပွဲ / ပြေးရသောပွဲ (agōn/dromos); ယုံကြည်ခြင်းကို စောင့်ရှောက်ခြင်း (tēreō); ချီးမြှင့်တော်မူခြင်း (apodidōmi)Reward-for-endurance language is highly vulnerable to assimilation into the kutho (merit) ledger model, where accumulated good deeds mechanically produce a proportionate reward or better rebirth — read this way, “the righteous Judge will award the crown” becomes an impersonal karmic settling rather than a personal grace-enabled gift.Never present crown/reward vocabulary as a stand-alone unit. Every occurrence must be anchored back to ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း [Critical, baseline: forensic righteousness by faith, not merit] and ကျေးဇူးတော် [Critical, baseline: grace]; teaching notes should state explicitly that the crown flows from grace-enabled faithful endurance, not from an independently earned merit balance.

3. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods

3.1 Genuinely Missing Vocabulary (no native Burmese term; coinage/compound required)

ConceptGapCoinage Adopted
θεόπνευστος (God-breathed)No Burmese word names Scripture’s origin as the very breath of a personal God speaking through human authors; Buddhist scriptural authority rests on the human recipient’s own attained insight, not on divine speech-origin at all.ဘုရားသခင် မှုတ်သွင်းတော်မူသော (compound, retained from 08_core_glossary.md)
παραθήκη (entrusted deposit)No cultural analogue for a fixed legal/banking trust returned unaltered, as distinct from an organically developing teacher-lineage.အပ်ထားသောအရာတော် (compound; requires illustrative teaching, see §2)
ἐπιφάνεια as a unique, non-repeatable bodily “appearing” (1:10, 4:1, 4:8)Burmese vocabulary for divine/spirit “appearing” is otherwise occupied by nat-spirit manifestation/possession events, which are by nature recurring and localized. A once-for-all incarnate appearing, followed by one future decisive return, has no ready native category.ထင်ရှားစွာ ကြွလာတော်မူခြင်း (compound; mandatory note distinguishing from နတ်ဆင်းသက်ခြင်း, already rejected under Incarnation in the baseline)
ἀφθαρσία (immortality/incorruption)Burmese Buddhist soteriology’s ultimate goal is cessation of rebirth (escape from continued existence), not embodied everlasting life; there is no organic positive-valence term for “unending embodied life” as a desired end-state.မပျက်စီးနိုင်ခြင်း (compound; requires explicit positive framing, since the audience’s cultural default reads permanence of existence as a problem, not a promise)

3.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods (terms exist, but are occupied by competing content)

Burmese TermCompeting OccupantFencing Required
ဒေသနာ (teaching/doctrine)Monk’s dhamma-desana; teacher-centered, commentarially developing authorityStanding note distinguishing fixed apostolic deposit from evolving commentarial tradition
ဒုက္ခ (suffering)First Noble Truth — impersonal universal condition escaped through detachmentAlways contextually bound to “for Christ’s sake / for the gospel”; never left as a bare noun
သမ္မာ(တရား) (truth)Pali sammā — “right(ness)” as in the Noble Eightfold Path’s sammā-diṭṭhi, attainable by disciplined practiceNote: this names a specific, revealed, Christ-centered apostolic content, not a generalized rightness one arrives at through practice
မာရ်နတ် (devil)Māra — a lesser cosmological tempter-role operating inside an impersonal karmic universeNote: real personal fallen spirit in active opposition to the one true God, not a cosmological role-function
ဒဏ္ဌာရီ (myth)Traditional legend / jataka-adjacent narrative genreNote: Scripture’s truth-claim is historical and apostolically verified, unlike invented legend
ကုသိုလ်/ကံ family (merit/karma)Merit-ledger reward systemAffects crown-of-righteousness and repentance (μετάνοια) vocabulary; both must be explicitly anchored to grace, never left to imply a merit balance
ကြွလာတော်မူခြင်း / ဆင်းသက်ခြင်း (appearing/descending)Nat-spirit descent/possessionSame fencing as Incarnation baseline; extended here to ἐπιφάνεια’s future-return sense (4:1, 4:8)
နောက်ဆုံးသောနေ့ရက်များ (last days)Cyclical kappa cosmology; expectation of Metteyya renewing a declining dhammaNote: linear, unrepeated, moving toward one final decisive return — never a decline-and-renewal cycle

4. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions

ItemDecisionRationale
θεόπνευστοςParaphrase (compound)Transliterating an unfamiliar Greek compound would communicate nothing to the reader; only a descriptive compound conveys “breathed out by God.”
ἐπιφάνειαParaphrase (compound)Same reasoning; “epiphaneia” transliterated is meaningless to a Burmese reader, and the descriptive compound is also needed to carry the once-for-all/non-repeatable sense.
στέφανος τῆς δικαιοσύνηςParaphrase, using existing Burmese victor’s-wreath vocabulary (သရဖူ) rather than a new athletic loanwordNo natural Burmese athletic-crown loanword exists; the existing word carries some royal/ceremonial-diadem connotation, so teaching notes must clarify this is a victor’s garland (like an ancient games wreath), not a monarch’s crown, to avoid a political-power reading.
εὐαγγελιστήςParaphrase (compound built on established “gospel” term)Consistent with the decision already made for “gospel” itself (သတင်းကောင်း); a bare transliteration (“evangelist”) would be opaque and inconsistent with the existing glossary’s compounding pattern.
διάβολοςRetain established Burmese term (already assimilated coinage, not a fresh transliteration decision)Governed by tradition-authority rule; flagged Critical for mandatory review per baseline pattern, not re-decided here.
Ἰάννης καὶ Ἰαμβρῆς (Jannes and Jambres, 3:8)Transliterate as proper names, following whatever form (if any) is already established in the Myanmar Bible tradition; if none exists, adopt a standard phonetic transliteration and flag for confirmation against the Myanmar Bible Society’s OT-tradition naming conventionsThese are extra-Pentateuchal Jewish tradition figures with zero cultural familiarity for Burmese readers of any background; the reference requires an explanatory footnote (Moses’ Egyptian magician-opponents) regardless of transliteration choice, since OT narrative literacy is assumed low for first-generation believers per the baseline’s stated audience profile.
Λωΐς, Εὐνίκη (Lois, Eunice, 1:5)Transliterate as proper names in standard Myanmar Bible formStandard proper-name handling per baseline convention (cf. David, Israel); no doctrinal risk, but the multigenerational-faith detail should be highlighted as a positive cultural bridge for Faithful Transmission of the Gospel teaching.
Δημᾶς, Κρήσκης, Τίτος, Λουκᾶς, Μᾶρκος, Τυχικός, Κάρπος, Ἀλέξανδρος, Πρίσκα, Ἀκύλας, Ἔραστος, Τρόφιμος, Εὔβουλος, Πούδης, Λίνος, Κλαυδία (4:9-21)Transliterate all as proper names in standard formLow risk; these closing personal names carry no doctrinal freight, but Demas (who “loved the present age” and forsook Paul, 4:10) should be flagged in teaching notes as a named, sobering case study contrasted with “loved his appearing” (4:8) — a rhetorical pairing worth preserving in any derivative lesson material.
ἀνάλυσις (“my departure,” 4:6)Paraphrase, not transliterationThe Greek nautical/tent-striking image (unmooring a ship / striking a tent) has no single Burmese equivalent image; ခွာသွားရသည့်အချိန် (“the time of going away/departing”) preserves the purposeful, hope-filled sense without importing an uncertain-rebirth connotation a literal “death” term might carry.

5. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities for 2 Timothy

Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × syncretism collision risk):

  1. διάβολος / မာရ်နတ် (the Devil, 2:26)Critical. Shares its root name with Māra, the Buddhist tempter-cosmological-role. Risk of reducing a real personal fallen spirit in active opposition to God into a minor figure operating within an impersonal karmic universe. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence.
  2. θεόπνευστος (God-breathed, 3:16)Critical. Anchor term for Inspiration/Sufficiency; risk of flattening into generic “inspired” or of readers substituting the Tipitaka’s paññā-based authority model. Core-passage term; highest doctrinal centrality in this curriculum.
  3. ἀνάστασιν ἤδη γεγονέναι — the false “resurrection already happened” claim (2:18)Critical. Elevated risk that Burmese readers, familiar with rebirth-cycle thinking, misread a condemned heresy as a plausible spiritualized-resurrection compatible with an ongoing-rebirth worldview rather than recognizing it as an error Paul refutes.
  4. ἐπιφάνεια (appearing, 1:10 / 4:1 / 4:8)Critical. Collides with nat-spirit manifestation/possession vocabulary; must be taught as two, and only two, unique historical bodily events (first coming; future return), never a repeatable spiritual visitation.
  5. στέφανος τῆς δικαιοσύνης / crown-and-reward cluster (4:8)High. Assurance of Reward’s anchor term is highly exposed to reinterpretation through the kutho merit-ledger system; without constant anchoring to grace and forensic righteousness, “the righteous Judge will award” reads as karmic settlement.
  6. κακοπαθέω / ဒုက္ခ (suffering, throughout, esp. 1:8, 2:3, 2:9, 3:11-12, 4:5)High. Frequency across the letter compounds the risk; ဒုက္ခ’s First-Noble-Truth associations pull toward an escape-oriented framework directly opposed to the passage’s call to embrace suffering in hope.
  7. διδασκαλία / ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία / ဒေသနာ (teaching/sound doctrine, 3:16, 4:3)High. Central to Guarding Sound Doctrine; the dhamma-desana authority model (teacher-centered, commentarially evolving) is the opposite of “guard the fixed deposit unaltered.”
  8. ἀλήθεια / ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας / သမ္မာတရား (truth, 2:25, 3:7-8, 4:4)High. Echoes Pali sammā vocabulary from the Noble Eightfold Path; risk of “truth” being read as a generalized rightness attainable through diligent practice rather than a specific, revealed, apostolic content.
  9. παραθήκη (entrusted deposit, 1:12, 1:14, and underlying 2:2)High. Conceptual gap rather than lexical collision: no native model for a fixed trust returned unaltered, versus the culturally normal pattern of organically developing teacher-lineage transmission.
  10. ἔσχαται ἡμέραι (last days, 3:1)High. Collides with cyclical kappa cosmology and the expectation of Metteyya renewing a declining dhamma; must be taught as linear and unrepeated.
  11. εὐσέβεια / μόρφωσις εὐσεβείας (godliness / form of godliness, 3:5)High. Especially sensitive given Burmese religious culture’s heavy emphasis on visible ritual correctness (temple attendance, alms-giving, precept-observance) as the primary public evidence of genuine devotion; the passage’s warning that outward performance can mask denial of God’s power must not be softened for cultural comfort.
  12. ἀφθαρσία (immortality, 1:10)Medium-High. Valence-reversal risk: the audience’s default framework treats continued embodied existence as the problem to escape, not the promised good; requires deliberate positive reframing rather than reliance on cultural default associations.
  13. μῦθος / ဒဏ္ဌာရီ (myths, 4:4)Medium. Risk of assimilation to traditional legendary/jataka-adjacent narrative genres, understating the passage’s contrast between invented fable and historically verified apostolic truth.
  14. σπένδομαι (poured out as a libation, 4:6)Medium-High. Pouring-out/offering language risks evoking merit-offerings made at pagodas or to nats; requires a note clarifying self-sacrificial gospel service, not ritual offering for merit or favor.

6. Summary Recommendation for Phase 1 Step 9 (Core Glossary Construction)

All fourteen ranked ambiguities above, plus the four genuinely-missing-vocabulary coinages in §3.1, must be carried forward into 08_core_glossary.md with explicit risk tiers and, for every Critical/High item, a mandatory standing translator/theologian note keyed to the specific verse(s) where the collision is most acute (see chapter ledger in §1). No new term introduced in this analysis should deviate from an already-established Myanmar Bible rendering where one exists (tradition-authority rule); gaps are to be filled only by transparent, teachable compounds, never by silent adoption of a Buddhist-technical-vocabulary shortcut.
