Linguistic Gap Analysis

06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — Matthew 1–28 (English → Burmese)

1. Purpose and Method

This analysis identifies where the Burmese language (a) lacks vocabulary for concepts introduced or intensified by Matthew relative to the Romans baseline, and (b) has vocabulary that is already occupied by Theravada Buddhist doctrinal, cosmological, or folk-religious concepts, creating collision risk. It extends — and does not contradict — the baseline translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json and builds directly on 08_core_glossary.md’s Matthew-specific term list.

Method: every chapter of Matthew (1–28) was reviewed against the nine assigned curriculum doctrines and the core passage (Matthew 5:1-12, the Beatitudes). For each doctrine, existing Burmese theological vocabulary is inventoried, its weaknesses named, and a recommended handling strategy given (reuse baseline exactly / coin new compound / transliterate / transliterate-plus-gloss / fence with mandatory translator note). Findings feed directly into Phase 1 Step 9 (risk registry extension) and Phase 2’s segment-level enforcement.

2. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix

2.1 The Kingdom of Heaven

Available Burmese termsWeaknessesRecommended strategy
ကောင်းကင်နိုင်ငံတော် (new, Matthew-specific)Compound is transparent but ကောင်းကင် (“sky/heaven”) risks being heard as a location (a better afterlife realm to be reborn into) rather than God’s reign.Retain compound; every catechetical unit must state explicitly this is God’s sovereign rule breaking into the present, not a postmortem destination reward.
ဘုရားသခင်၏နိုင်ငံတော် (baseline kingdom_of_god)None inherent; risk is only in failing to link it to the phrase above.Reuse baseline exactly; teach both phrasings as one referent per baseline cross-reference note.
နတ်ပြည် (rejected)Names the deva-loka heavenly realms — a temporary, merit-dependent rebirth destination lost once merit is exhausted. Directly contradicts the Kingdom’s permanence and grace-basis.Forbidden substitution. Flag at validation.
ဘုန်းတော်နိုင်ငံ (rejected, baseline)Reads as a kingdom built on ဘုန်း (merit-power/royal splendor), reintroducing a merit framework.Forbidden substitution.

Gap type: Crowded neighborhood (နတ်ပြည်/ဘုန်းတော်နိုင်ငံ) fenced by an already-coined new compound. Low missing-vocabulary risk; high collision risk requiring sustained catechesis rather than a term change.

2.2 Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David

Available Burmese termsWeaknessesRecommended strategy
မေရှိယ (baseline messiah, transliterated)None once မိတ္တေယျ is excluded; transliteration insulates the term from cosmology collision but requires the learner to be taught the OT background from scratch — Burmese has no native lexical item for “anointed royal-priestly deliverer.”Reuse baseline exactly; always pair with brief OT covenant explanation on first occurrence per lesson.
မိတ္တေယျ (rejected)Names the Theravada expected future Buddha (Metteyya) who will appear at a future, currently-unfulfilled point in the endlessly cycling dispensations. A hearer could map “the promised one who is to come” directly onto this figure.Forbidden substitution, Critical tier.
ဒါဝိဒ်၏သားတော် (new son_of_david) / ဒါဝိဒ်၏အနွယ်ဝင် (baseline seed_of_david)No native Burmese royal-dynastic-covenant category exists (Burmese kingship history has no promised eternal royal line tied to a personal God’s oath). The honorific “-တော်” must be applied precisely to the title form, never the descent form.Maintain the Section D honorific discipline from 08_core_glossary.md; require background teaching, not lexical substitution.

Gap type: True missing vocabulary (no native concept of a covenant-royal-line Messiah) resolved by transliteration + mandatory theological scaffolding, not translation.

2.3 Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy

Available Burmese termsWeaknessesRecommended strategy
ပြည့်စုံစေခြင်း (new fulfill)ပြည့်စုံ (“to become complete/full”) is doctrinally safe in isolation, but the surrounding worldview risk is temporal: Burmese Buddhist cosmology assumes ကမ္ဘာ (world-ages) recur without beginning or end, so “fulfillment of a specific ancient promise, once” can be heard as one more turn of a repeating wheel rather than a unique linear event.Reuse; every fulfillment-formula occurrence (Matt 1:22-23; 2:15,17-18,23; 4:14; 5:17; 8:17; 12:17; 13:35; 21:4; 26:56; 27:9) should carry linear-history framing language (“one time, historically, as promised long ago”) rather than relying on the verb alone.
ပရောဖက်ပြုချက် (baseline prophecy) / ပရောဖက် (baseline prophet)Distinguished already from ဗေဒင် (astrology) in baseline. No new weakness introduced by Matthew.Reuse exactly.

Gap type: No missing vocabulary; crowded worldview-level neighborhood (linear vs. cyclical time) rather than a lexical collision — requires narrative/teaching framing more than term substitution.

2.4 The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching

Available Burmese termsWeaknessesRecommended strategy
အခွင့်အာဏာ (new authority)အာဏာ alone is heavily loaded toward state/military/political power in contemporary Burmese usage (a live and sensitive register given Myanmar’s political history). Hearers may default to a coercive-power reading rather than an inherent-teaching-authority reading.Retain compound (အခွင့် softens the purely coercive sense toward “granted right/prerogative”), but every occurrence in a teaching-authority context (7:29; 9:6,8; 21:23-27) should be glossed as “authority to teach and forgive, not political rule,” reserving the unqualified cosmic sense for 28:18.
ဆရာ / ရဗ္ဗိ (new teacher_rabbi)ဆရာ alone is a generic honorific applied to any respected instructor (including astrologers, traditional healers, meditation masters); does not by itself convey unique authoritative teaching status.Pair with explicit “as one having authority, not as the scribes” framing (7:29) so learners register the contrast Matthew himself draws.

Gap type: Crowded neighborhood — အာဏာ’s political connotation is the collision; requires contextual fencing rather than lexical substitution, since no unloaded Burmese synonym for “inherent divine authority” exists.

2.5 Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees

Available Burmese termsWeaknessesRecommended strategy
ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း (baseline righteousness, Critical)Baseline already fences this against ကုသိုလ်ကံ/သီလ. Matthew’s antitheses (5:21-48) intensify the risk: “exceeding” righteousness could be heard as “a stricter precept-list” (a graduated သီလ path) rather than heart-level transformation.Reuse baseline term exactly; every antithesis unit must state the contrast is internal/relational depth, not additional external rules.
စုံလင်သော (new perfect)Risk of being heard as flawless self-achieved moral perfection attainable by sufficient effort/meditation — echoing a graduated path toward arahantship (the goal of Theravada monastic discipline).Fence with mandatory note: Spirit-enabled wholehearted love reflecting the Father’s character, not self-perfected moral achievement.
နှလုံးသားစင်ကြယ်သော (new pure_in_heart)Reuses စင်ကြယ်, already flagged in baseline as carrying ritual/ceremonial purity connotations; also risks being heard as the product of samatha/vipassana mind-purification practice.Redirect explicitly to moral-relational sincerity of the inner person before a personal God; never let စင်ကြယ် stand unqualified.
လျှို့ဝှက်ကြောင်ဖျင်းသူ (new hypocrite)Public religious performance (almsgiving, prayer displays) carries strong social-merit value in Burmese Buddhist culture; risk that Jesus’ critique is heard as etiquette advice rather than a warning about standing before God.Fence with note: pretense specifically before God, who sees the heart; not a critique of public piety as such.
ဝန်ထုပ် / အနားယူခြင်း (new yoke_and_rest)Risk of hearing “easier yoke” as simply a lighter version of the same merit-earning system rather than rest found in a person.Fence: rest is relational (union with Christ, who has fulfilled the Law), not a reduced precept-list.

Gap type: Predominantly crowded neighborhood — multiple terms borrow vocabulary already saturated with merit/precept/ritual-purity associations; consistent fencing notes are the primary mitigation, not new coinages.

2.6 The Church and Church Discipline

Available Burmese termsWeaknessesRecommended strategy
အသင်းတော် (baseline church)Already fenced against ဘုရားကျောင်း/ဘုရားရိပ်သာ. Matthew’s founding text (16:18) and discipline procedure (18:15-17) add no new lexical risk but raise the doctrinal stakes of consistent usage.Reuse exactly.
နိုင်ငံတော်၏သော့ချက်များ / ချုပ်ခြင်းနှင့်လွှတ်ခြင်း (new keys_of_the_kingdom_bind_and_loose)Highest collision risk in this doctrine cluster: “binding/loosing” through spoken/ritual formula closely resembles weizza (esoteric adept) practice and amulet/incantation traditions that claim to bind spirits or fates through ritual words.Mandatory fencing note on every occurrence: delegated, Spirit-guided declarative authority exercised corporately, never individual incantational power.
ထိမိဆုံးရှုံးစေခြင်း (new stumbling_block)Risk of flattening to mere social offense/insult rather than spiritual endangerment of another’s faith.Fence explicitly toward faith-endangerment sense.
အသင်းတော်ကို ပြောပြခြင်း (new church_discipline_procedure)Risk of being heard through the lens of village/monastic shunning practices (social exclusion, loss of standing) rather than a restorative process.Fence: aim is repentance and restoration, explicitly stated at each step of 18:15-17.
ခွင့်လွှတ်ခြင်း (new forgive_unlimited)Risk of collapsing into reciprocal merit-exchange (“I forgive you because you did me a favor once”) rather than grace-shaped asymmetry.Fence with the unmerciful-servant parable’s own logic (forgiven much → forgive much).

Gap type: Missing vocabulary (no native term for “delegated ecclesial declarative authority”) resolved by compound coinage, immediately requiring collision-fencing against weizza/shunning associations.

2.7 The Great Commission

Available Burmese termsWeaknessesRecommended strategy
ထွက်သွား၍…တပည့်တော်ဖြစ်စေကြလော့ (new make_disciples_of_all_nations)Combines baseline gentiles/mission with new disciple; သာသနာပြု (mission) retains its Buddhist-institutional flavor already flagged in the baseline and Section A of 08_core_glossary.md.Reuse the baseline-approved compound; retain the standing translator note about သာသနာပြု’s institutional connotation whenever this phrase recurs (10:5-6 restricted mission; 28:19 universalized).
ဗတ္တိဇံ ခံယူခြင်း / ဗတ္တိဇံပေးခြင်း (new baptism)Transliterated, so no direct lexical collision, but must not be assimilated to ritual water-purification/bathing practiced at pagodas.Retain transliteration; fence against ritual-bathing assimilation.
အဖ၊ သားတော်၊ သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော်၏ နာမတော်၌ ဗတ္တိဇံပေးခြင်း (new baptizing_in_the_name_of_the_trinity)No lexical weakness per se; the risk is structural — three Critical-tier baseline terms compressed into one clause raise the probability that a single mistranslated word corrupts Trinitarian doctrine.Verbatim, word-for-word enforcement; mandatory theologian review flagged at every occurrence (28:19).
ကမ္ဘာအဆက်ဆုံးတိုင်အောင် (reuse of end_of_the_age)See §2.8 below; same collision.Reuse exactly with standing fencing note.

Gap type: Low missing-vocabulary risk (terms already resolved); the residual risk is density of Critical terms in a single verse, not any individual term’s gap.

2.8 Judgment and the End of the Age

Available Burmese termsWeaknessesRecommended strategy
ကမ္ဘာအဆက်ဆုံးချိန် / ကမ္ဘာအဆက်ဆုံးတိုင်အောင် (new end_of_the_age)Highest-severity cosmological collision in the curriculum. ကမ္ဘာ names a kalpa/world-era within Buddhist cosmology’s beginningless, endlessly repeating cycle of arising and dissolution; “the end of the age” risks being heard as merely the close of the current kalpa, with another to follow.Mandatory fencing note every occurrence (13:39-40,49; 24:3; 28:20): a final, linear, one-time consummation under a personal God’s judgment, not one kalpa’s end among an unbounded series.
ကြီးစွာသောဒုက္ခ (new great_tribulation)Collides with ဒုက္ခ, the first of the Four Noble Truths — the universal, ever-present, self-resolvable condition of all conditioned existence. Matthew’s referent is a bounded, historical, future period preceding judgment.Mandatory fencing note every occurrence (24:21-22): specific and bounded, not universal metaphysical dukkha addressed by the Eightfold Path.
ထာဝရမီး / ထာဝရအသက် (new eternal_fire_and_eternal_life)ထာဝရ (“eternal/permanent”) must overcome the default assumption that all states, including any rebirth-destination (whether hell-realm or heaven-realm), are ultimately impermanent and escapable within samsara.Mandatory fencing note (25:41,46): a genuinely final, unending, personally-adjudicated destiny, not a temporary rebirth station.
သိုးနှင့်ဆိတ် (new sheep_and_goats)Risk of a works-merit misreading (acts of mercy earn the verdict) contradicting baseline grace.Fence: acts flow from and evidence prior relationship with the King; not an independent merit path.
ပျက်စီးခြင်း၏ ရွံရှာဖွယ်အရာ (new abomination_of_desolation)No inherent collision; risk is under-teaching (vague generic “evil” reading without the Daniel 9:27 background).Provide OT background note, not lexical substitution.

Gap type: The single densest cluster of Critical-tier cosmological collisions in the entire curriculum. No coinage can avoid the collision because the concepts (kalpa, dukkha, impermanence) are foundational to the destination culture’s dominant worldview; mitigation is exclusively through mandatory, repeated catechetical fencing.

2.9 Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus

Available Burmese termsWeaknessesRecommended strategy
တပည့်တော် (new disciple)ဆရာ-တပည့် (teacher-student) is a well-understood Burmese relational category, including the monk-novice relationship, but that relationship is typically temporary/instructional rather than total and life-reordering.Fence: total, exclusive, permanent allegiance to Jesus as unique Teacher/Lord, not a revocable apprenticeship.
လက်ဝါးကပ်တိုင်ကို ထမ်းရွက်ခြင်း (new take_up_the_cross)Roman crucifixion has no Burmese cultural referent at all — genuinely missing background knowledge, not a lexical collision.Requires explicit historical explanation (a humiliating Roman execution method) before the metaphor of costly, total surrender can land; do not let it flatten into a generic “endure hardship” idiom.
ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်းကို မဆောင်၊ ဓားကိုသာ ဆောင်ခြင်း (new not_peace_but_a_sword)Risk of literal-violence misreading; acutely sensitive given genuine family division following conversion from Buddhism in the contemporary Myanmar context.Fence as figurative relational/familial division; pastoral framing required, not merely lexical accuracy.
ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်းကြောင့် နှောင့်ယှက်ညှဉ်းဆဲခြင်းခံရသော (new persecuted_for_righteousness)No lexical weakness; pastoral weight is high given real social/familial cost of conversion.Retain; pair with pastoral care materials, not a translation change.
ကောင်းကင်နိုင်ငံတော်အတွက် လက်မထပ်ဘဲနေခြင်း (new eunuchs_for_the_kingdom)Risk of conflation with ရဟန်းပြုခြင်း (monastic ordination/celibacy), a merit- and purity-oriented vocation in Burmese Buddhist practice.Fence explicitly: kingdom-service devotion and mission availability, not merit-seeking renunciation.
ချည်ချောင်း၏အပေါက် ကုလားအုတ်ဖြတ်သန်းခြင်း (new eye_of_a_needle)Hyperbolic idiom with no native Burmese equivalent image; risk of being read as mere practical difficulty rather than near-impossibility apart from grace.Retain literal image (camel/needle’s eye) rather than substituting a domestic Burmese hyperbole, to preserve the specific grace-vs-wealth-attachment argument of 19:16-26.

Gap type: Mixed — some genuine missing background knowledge (crucifixion), some crowded-neighborhood collisions (eunuchs/monasticism), resolved by a combination of literal retention, fencing notes, and explicit historical-background teaching.

2.10 Supplementary Core-Passage Doctrine Cluster: The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12)

Because Matthew 5:1-12 is the designated core passage, its nine Beatitude terms (already itemized individually in 08_core_glossary.md Section B) are consolidated here as a single high-density risk cluster:

TermWeaknessStrategy
မင်္ဂလာရှိသော (blessed)Single highest-frequency collision term in the core passage. မင်္ဂလာ is the operative term of the Mangala Sutta’s 38 auspicious conditions secured by right conduct — the inverse logic of God’s favor pronounced on the poor, mourning, and persecuted.Mandatory translator note on every one of the nine occurrences (5:3-11); teach as God’s sovereign verdict of favor, not behavior-earned auspiciousness.
ဝိညာဉ်တွင် ဆင်းရဲသော (poor in spirit)Risk of being heard as literal poverty or personal weakness.Fence toward total dependence on grace.
နူးညံ့သိမ်မွေ့သော (meek)Risk of collapsing into generic social deference (a highly prized value in Burmese communal culture) rather than Christlike strength under God’s control.Fence with Christological grounding (11:29; 21:5).
ဆာငတ်သော…ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်းကို (hunger and thirst for righteousness)Risk of ascetic-craving misreading.Fence: Spirit-given longing God himself satisfies, not self-generated ascetic discipline.
သနားကြင်နာသော (merciful)Risk of collapsing into self-cultivated ကရုဏာ meditation practiced for personal merit.Fence as relational obedience flowing from received mercy.
နှလုံးသားစင်ကြယ်သော (pure in heart)See §2.5 above.Same fencing strategy.
ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်းကိုပြုသူ (peacemakers)Risk of reducing to passive social-harmony-keeping.Fence toward active gospel-shaped reconciliation.
ဘုရားသခင်၏သားများ (sons of God, believers)Must never receive the “-တော်” honorific reserved for Christ.Enforce honorific discipline per baseline cross-reference rule.
ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်းကြောင့် နှောင့်ယှက်ညှဉ်းဆဲခြင်းခံရသော (persecuted for righteousness)See §2.9 above.Same pastoral framing.
ဆုလာဘ် (reward, v.12)Risk of merit-ledger reading (ကုသိုလ်ဆုလာဘ်).Fence as grace-flowing covenant recompense, not proportional merit payment.

This cluster alone accounts for a disproportionate share of the curriculum’s total collision risk given its density of nine consecutive Critical/High-tier terms in twelve verses — see ranked list §5, items 2 and several supporting entries.

3. Missing Vocabulary (No Native Burmese Equivalent — Requires Coinage or Retained Literalism)

These concepts have no existing Burmese lexical item at all, Christian or Buddhist — the gap is genuine absence of background category, not competition with an existing one. Coinage (compound construction) or literal-image retention is the only viable strategy; fencing notes address comprehension, not collision.

ConceptChaptersGap descriptionStrategy adopted
Son of Man (Danielic divine-human authority figure)8,9,11,12,13,16,17,20,24,25,26လူသား (“human being”) is the only lexical option but carries none of Daniel 7’s dominion/glory freight; Burmese has no category for a divine-human eschatological judge-figure.Retain လူသား; require sustained catechesis linking it to Daniel 7:13-14 on first and programmatic occurrences (esp. 24:27-44, 26:64).
Roman crucifixion as a specific historical execution method10,16,20,26,27No cultural memory of this practice; risk of the cross becoming a bare metaphor detached from its historical horror.Explicit historical explanation required before/alongside the metaphorical “take up the cross” usage.
Ransom paid by another to release from bondage (lytron)20ရွေးနှင်းရာဖိုး is a workable compound (redemption-price), but Burmese soteriological vocabulary defaults to self-liberation (extinguishing craving); “a price paid by someone else on my behalf” is a foreign transactional-substitutionary shape.Retain compound; fence against self-liberation misreading (see §5 ranked list).
Immanuel as a theophoric name requiring built-in gloss1ဣမ္မာနွေလ is meaningless as a bare transliteration to a Burmese reader; Matthew himself supplies the gloss, and Burmese must too.Retain transliteration + mandatory embedded gloss (“God with us”) every occurrence, never transliteration alone.
Davidic royal covenant (an eternal promised dynastic line under a personal God’s oath)1,9,15,20,21No indigenous Burmese monarchical tradition carries an analogous eternal, divinely-sworn dynastic promise.Requires OT background teaching unit; no single term can carry this alone.
Eye-of-the-needle hyperbole19No equivalent Burmese proverb of comparable rhetorical force for “categorically impossible apart from grace.”Retain the literal camel/needle image rather than substituting a domestic idiom, to preserve argument precision.
Trinitarian baptismal formula as a single grammatical unit28Not a vocabulary gap per se, but the first explicit compressed Trinitarian formula in either curriculum requires that all three Persons’ baseline terms interlock without any one being paraphrased for smoothness.Verbatim rendering only; no stylistic smoothing permitted.

4. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Needing Fencing

Unlike §3, these terms do have available Burmese vocabulary — the problem is that the vocabulary is already densely occupied by Theravada Buddhist doctrinal or cosmological content. Listed by the competing concept they must be fenced against, consolidated from the doctrine matrix above and 08_core_glossary.md.

Burmese term/word-rootCompeting Buddhist/folk concept it collides withDoctrines affectedFencing requirement
ကမ္ဘာ (world-era)Beginningless, endlessly repeating kalpa cycleJudgment/End of Age, Fulfillment of Prophecy, Great CommissionMandatory note on every occurrence: linear, final, one-time.
ဒုက္ခ (suffering)First Noble Truth — universal, ever-present condition of samsaric existenceJudgment/End of Age (great tribulation)Mandatory note: specific, bounded, historical period.
ထာဝရ (eternal/permanent)Implicit assumption that no state, including rebirth-destinations, is ultimately permanentJudgment/End of AgeMandatory note: genuinely final, unending.
နတ်ပြည် / ဘုန်းတော်နိုင်ငံ (heavenly/glorious realm)Deva-loka realms, merit-dependent and impermanentKingdom of HeavenForbidden substitution; already fenced by coined compound ကောင်းကင်နိုင်ငံတော်.
မင်္ဂလာ (auspiciousness)Mangala Sutta’s 38 behavior-secured auspicious conditionsBeatitudes / Kingdom EthicsMandatory note on every occurrence (highest-frequency collision in core passage).
မာရ်နတ် (Māra)The named tempter-deity who opposed the Buddha, operating within an endless rebirth cycleTemptation narrative (ch.4), parable of the weeds (ch.13)Mandatory note distinguishing a singular, defeated, finally-judged created being from a figure within an unending cycle.
ဝိနည်း (Vinaya)Buddhist monastic disciplinary codeLaw (baseline), SabbathAlready forbidden in baseline for law; extend forbidding to any Sabbath-observance framing.
ဥပုသ်နေ့ (Uposatha)Buddhist lay/monastic observance day of precepts and temple attendanceSabbath and Lord of the SabbathFence: covenantal creation-rest, not a merit-generating observance day.
ရဟန်းပြု (monastic ordination)Renunciation of lay life for merit/purity through monastic disciplineEunuchs for the kingdom, sainthood (baseline), separation unto God’s service (baseline)Fence as kingdom-service devotion, not merit-seeking renunciation.
ရဟန္တာ (arahant)A spiritually elite figure who has personally attained enlightenmentSaints (baseline), Perfect (teleios)Fence: corporate designation for all believers / Spirit-enabled wholehearted love, not an ascetic elite’s self-achieved attainment.
ကုသိုလ် / ကံကောင်းခြင်း / သီလ / ဘုန်းကံ (merit family)Merit accumulation as the mechanism of religious advancementGrace, Righteousness, Reward, Laborers in the Vineyard, Talents, Eye of the NeedleAll already forbidden or fenced in baseline/glossary; Matthew’s parables (20:1-16; 25:14-30) intensify exposure by dramatizing the contrast narratively, not just doctrinally.
ကံ / ကံဇာတာ / ကံကြမ္မာ (karma/fate)Impersonal cause-and-effect determinismCalled, Election, Providence, Many called few chosenAlready forbidden in baseline; Matthew 22:14 reinforces.
ဗေဒင် (astrology/fortune-telling)Predictive practice for timing and fortuneNo one knows the day or hour (ch.24)Fence: forecloses date-setting/fortune-telling approaches to the future.
ဗြဟ္မာ (Brahma)Impersonal high deity-realmFather (baseline)Already forbidden in baseline; reinforced by Lord’s Prayer’s centrality in Matthew (6:9).
ဥပမာ (simile)Standard term for similes throughout Dhamma teachingParableFence: revelatory act tied to hearer’s relationship to the kingdom, not a generic wisdom-illustration.
စင်ကြယ် (ritually pure)Ceremonial/ritual purity, meditative mind-purificationHoly (baseline), Pure in heartAlready flagged in baseline for holy; extended to pure_in_heart.
ဝိညာဉ် (spirit, used alone)Impermanent consciousness-stream (anatta denies a permanent self/spirit) or a nat-spiritHoly Spirit (baseline)Never used alone; already forbidden in baseline.
အာဏာ (state/coercive power)Political/military authorityAuthority of Jesus’ TeachingFence toward inherent teaching/forgiving authority except at 28:18 (deliberately cosmic/total).
ဆုလာဘ် (reward)Karmic-proportional reward for good deedsReward, TalentsFence: grace-given, covenant-relational, not merit-ledger payment.

Observation: the crowded-neighborhood problem is significantly denser in Matthew than in Romans, because Matthew’s narrative genre (parables, apocalyptic discourse, wisdom-form Beatitudes) repeatedly reaches for exactly the register of vocabulary (merit, auspiciousness, cosmic time, spirit-language) that Burmese already uses for Theravada content. Phase 2 reviewers should expect a higher per-chapter density of mandatory translator notes than in the Romans curriculum.

5. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions

TermDecisionRationale
Messiah → မေရှိယTransliterateInsulates from မိတ္တေယျ collision entirely; matches baseline.
Immanuel → ဣမ္မာနွေလ + glossTransliterate + mandatory glossBare transliteration is meaningless; Matthew’s own text supplies the gloss, so Burmese must too.
Hosanna → ဟောရှာန္နTransliterateEstablished liturgical convention; no natural Burmese paraphrase carries the same acclamatory force.
Abba → အဗ္ဘ (baseline)Transliterate (retained from Romans)Preserves Aramaic filial intimacy the formal အဖ term alone cannot carry.
Amen / Hallelujah → အာမင် / ဟာလေလုယTransliterateEstablished Myanmar Bible convention (per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md).
Pharisees / Sadducees → ဖာရိရှဲ / ဇဒ္ဒုကဲTransliterateThese are proper-name-like designations for specific first-century parties with no Burmese equivalent category; paraphrasing (e.g., “strict legalists”) would blur their identity as a historically specific, not generic, group.
Devil/Satan → မာရ်နတ် / စာတန်Retain established transliteration/loan-usage despite collisionAlready established in Myanmar Christian usage (per prior glossary); replacing it now would fracture continuity with existing Myanmar Bible tradition more than it would reduce risk. Collision is managed by mandatory fencing note, not by lexical substitution.
Son of Man → လူသားParaphrase (dynamic equivalent), not transliterationThe Danielic title has no transliterable Hebrew/Greek form suitable for ordinary reading (unlike “Messiah”); the descriptive compound is retained and its theological freight supplied by teaching, not by the word itself.
Kingdom of Heaven → ကောင်းကင်နိုင်ငံတော်Paraphrase (compound coinage)A transliteration of “basileia tōn ouranōn” would be unusable in running text; the coined compound is already established and cross-referenced to baseline kingdom_of_god.
Ransom → ရွေးနှင်းရာဖိုးParaphrase (compound coinage)No transliterable Greek form is usable; the compound preserves the “price paid by another” sense better than any single existing word.
Talents (currency) → ငွေအခွက်Paraphrase (dynamic equivalent using a traditional weight/monetary unit)Transliterating “talanta” would produce an opaque foreign-currency term; the existing Burmese monetary-weight term communicates “a unit of significant entrusted value” without requiring a numismatics lesson, and the parable’s point (stewardship accountability) does not depend on exact monetary correspondence.
Eye of a needle idiomRetain literal image (no substitution with a domestic idiom)See §3; substituting a Burmese proverb would weaken the specific rhetorical force of “impossible apart from grace.”
Rabbi/Teacher → ဆရာ / ရဗ္ဗိMixed: paraphrase (ဆရာ) for general use, transliterate (ရဗ္ဗိ) where the text itself names the Hebrew titlePreserves both accessibility (ဆရာ) and textual fidelity where Matthew records the specific address term.
Great Tribulation, End of the Age, Eternal fire/lifeParaphrase using existing (collision-prone) vocabulary — no transliteration option existsThese are doctrinal categories, not proper nouns; there is no Greek term short enough or proper-noun-like enough to transliterate usefully, so the crowded-neighborhood terms must be used and fenced (see §4).

General principle applied: transliteration is preferred only where (a) the source term functions as a proper name or liturgical exclamation, and (b) a Burmese paraphrase would either be meaningless or would import a worse collision than transliteration’s opacity. Paraphrase/coinage is required wherever the concept is doctrinal/descriptive rather than a name, even when this means reusing collision-prone vocabulary that must then be fenced rather than avoided.

6. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities (Full Curriculum)

Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × likelihood of misreading given the destination culture’s dominant religious vocabulary):

  1. ကမ္ဘာအဆက်ဆုံးချိန် (end of the age) — kalpa-cycle collision; affects Judgment/End of Age, Great Commission, and Fulfillment of Prophecy simultaneously; appears at the curriculum’s structural climax (ch.13, 24, 28).
  2. မင်္ဂလာရှိသော (blessed) — Mangala Sutta collision at the highest-frequency point in the core passage itself (nine occurrences in twelve verses of Matt 5:1-12); single greatest risk of silently inverting the Beatitudes’ grace-logic into merit-logic.
  3. ကြီးစွာသောဒုက္ခ (great tribulation) — First Noble Truth collision; risk of hearers assimilating a bounded historical judgment-period into the universal, self-resolvable condition of samsaric existence.
  4. ထာဝရမီး / ထာဝရအသက် (eternal fire/life) — risk that “eternal” destinies are heard as merely long but ultimately impermanent rebirth-stations; undermines the finality of judgment central to the whole book’s climax.
  5. နတ်ပြည် / ကောင်းကင်နိုင်ငံတော် (Kingdom of Heaven) — risk of the Kingdom being heard as a merit-attained future heavenly realm rather than God’s present, grace-based reign; affects the single most frequent phrase in Matthew (~32 occurrences).
  6. ကျေးဇူးတော် vs. ကုသိုလ်/ဆုလာဘ် (grace vs. merit-reward) — intensified beyond the Romans baseline by Matthew’s parables (laborers in the vineyard, unmerciful servant, talents), which narratively dramatize the grace/merit contrast rather than stating it doctrinally; higher risk of an audience “resolving” the parable back into merit logic on their own.
  7. မာရ်နတ် (devil/Satan) — Māra collision; retained established usage carries ongoing risk precisely because it is not a fresh coinage the audience can approach without prior associations.
  8. လူသား (Son of Man) — near-certain flattening to “a human being” without sustained Danielic background teaching; the title recurs in the curriculum’s highest-Christology passages (16:13-20; 26:64).
  9. ကညာမ (virgin, ch.1) — risk of assimilation to nat-spirit conception folklore or Jataka birth narratives; foundational to the Incarnation doctrine at the book’s opening.
  10. ဥပုသ်နေ့ (Sabbath) — Uposatha collision; risk of Jesus’ Lordship-over-the-Sabbath claim (12:1-8) being heard as a dispute over precept-observance strictness rather than a Christological claim.
  11. အခွင့်အာဏာ (authority) — political/military connotation risk, especially acute given contemporary Myanmar political sensitivities; spans the whole Gospel and peaks at 28:18.
  12. စုံလင်သော (perfect) — arahantship-attainment collision; risk of Matthew 5:48 being read as a call to self-achieved flawlessness rather than Spirit-enabled wholehearted love.
  13. ကောင်းကင်နိုင်ငံတော်၏သော့ချက်များ (keys/bind and loose) — weizza/incantation collision; risk of church authority being understood as ritual-magical power rather than delegated declarative authority.
  14. ကောင်းကင်နိုင်ငံတော်အတွက် လက်မထပ်ဘဲနေခြင်း (eunuchs for the kingdom) — monastic-celibacy-for-merit collision (19:12).
  15. ရွေးနှင်းရာဖိုး (ransom) — self-liberation-vs-substitution collision; Burmese soteriological default (extinguishing one’s own craving) works against the “price paid by another” logic central to 20:28.
  16. နှလုံးသားစင်ကြယ်သော (pure in heart) — ritual-purity/meditative-purification collision inherited from baseline holy and intensified in the core passage (5:8).
  17. လျှို့ဝှက်ကြောင်ဖျင်းသူ (hypocrite) — risk of Jesus’ critique of public religious performance (ch.6) landing as etiquette advice rather than a warning about standing before God, given the high social-merit value of visible piety in Burmese Buddhist practice.
  18. ဥပမာ (parable) — Dhamma-simile collision; risk that Jesus’ parables (ch.13) are heard as generic wisdom-illustrations detached from their revelatory, response-dependent function.
  19. အသင်းတော်ကို ပြောပြခြင်း (church discipline procedure) — shunning-practice collision; risk that the restorative intent of 18:15-17 is read as social exclusion.
  20. သိုးနှင့်ဆိတ် (sheep and goats, 25:31-46) — works-merit misreading risk; acts of mercy could be heard as an independent path to eternal life rather than evidence of prior relationship with Christ, directly threatening the grace doctrine established throughout.

7. Chapter Coverage Confirmation

All 28 chapters of Matthew were reviewed for this analysis, cross-referenced against 08_core_glossary.md’s chapter-by-chapter term inventory:

  • Chapters carrying new or intensified terms analyzed above: 1–13, 15–28 (see doctrine matrix §2 and gap tables §3–4 for chapter citations throughout).
  • Chapter 14 reviewed in full, confirmed to introduce no new Critical/High-risk theological vocabulary beyond baseline son_of_god and faith, already covered under §2 (Jesus as Messiah/Son of God) and the Faith doctrine cluster inherited from Romans. No additional gap entries required.
  • No chapter was silently omitted; chapter 14’s null result is recorded explicitly per the full-book coverage mandate.

8. Recommendations for Phase 2 Enforcement

  1. Load this document alongside the Matthew extension of bible_term_registry.json and 08_core_glossary.md before any segment translation begins.
  2. Treat §6’s ranked list as the priority order for back-translation spot-checks: items 1–6 require theologian review on every occurrence without exception; items 7–14 require theologian review at first occurrence per chapter and native-speaker review thereafter; items 15–20 require native-speaker review with theologian escalation on ambiguity.
  3. The core passage (Matthew 5:1-12) should receive the single highest density of mandatory translator notes in the entire curriculum, given the concentration of collision-prone terms identified in §2.10 and the #2-ranked risk in §6.
  4. Where §3 (missing vocabulary) items recur, prioritize background teaching content (sidebars, footnotes) over further lexical engineering — no better Burmese word exists, so comprehension must be built through explanation, not translation choice.
  5. Where §4 (crowded neighborhoods) items recur, enforce the mandatory-note requirement without exception; do not allow reviewers to waive the note as “already understood from a previous lesson,” since the competing Buddhist concept remains active in the same lexical item throughout the curriculum.
  6. Feed this analysis forward into Phase 1 Step 9 (doctrine risk registry extension for Matthew) so that risk tiers assigned there are traceable to the specific collisions and gaps identified here.
