Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 1 John 1–5 — Full-Book Doctrine Matrix
Purpose and Scope
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4/5 doctrine analysis for the full text of 1 John, chapters 1 through 5, extending the Romans baseline doctrine framework. Every doctrine listed here is identical in name, risk tier, and burmese_doctrine_name to its corresponding entry in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (generated 2026-07-03), per the Hard Rule that outputs must never contradict the language authority. This matrix adds chapter-by-chapter passage mapping and translation-risk granularity not captured in the registry’s doctrine-level view.
The core passage, 1 John 4:7-21, is the theological anchor of the curriculum (God is Love; God’s Prior Love; Propitiation; Love for the Brethren; Assurance/Confidence) but is not the boundary of analysis. All five chapters are covered below in full, including sections that primarily reinforce doctrines already anchored elsewhere rather than introducing new risk.
Risk tier definitions (consistent with baseline and registry):
- Critical — Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision. Automated review sufficient.
Chapter 1 (1 John 1:1–10)
| Passage | Doctrine(s) Active | Risk | Key Terms | Burmese Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1-4 (Prologue: eyewitness testimony, Word of Life, fellowship, joy) | Fellowship with God and One Another | Medium | fellowship, word of life, testimony | မိတ်သဟာယ is low-lexical-risk but doctrinally central to the letter’s stated purpose (1:3-4); must be taught as participatory union with a personal God and his people, not social camaraderie in a religious association. “Word of Life” (အသက်တော်၏နှုတ်ကပါဌ်တော်) names the person of Christ, not an abstract teaching. | Native speaker review |
| 1:1-2 (eyewitness of eternal life manifested) | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; Incarnation and Antichrist | Critical | eternal life, incarnation | Establishes the letter’s evidentiary/eyewitness basis for the incarnation doctrine developed fully at 4:2-3; eternal life first introduced here as a Person seen/heard/touched, not an abstract state. | Human theologian |
| 1:5 (God is light; no darkness at all) | God is Light | High | light, darkness, god | Foundational thesis parallel to “God is love” (4:8). Never rendered so as to evoke ပညာအလင်းရောင် (self-attained meditative insight-light); God’s light is his own eternal moral nature, not an achievement. | Human theologian |
| 1:6-7 (walking in light/darkness; fellowship; blood of Jesus cleanses) | Fellowship with God and One Another; Cleansing from Sin | High | fellowship, cleanse, blood | Cleansing through Christ’s blood must not be rendered with vocabulary evoking ritual/ceremonial washing at pagodas or shrines. | Human theologian |
| 1:8-10 (confession of sin; God faithful and just to forgive) | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | High | confess, forgive, sin | Confession is a doctrinally specific declaration to a personal God, not monastic peer-confession maintaining sangha purity status; forgiveness is immediate judicial pardon, not gradual demerit-depletion through compensating merit. | Human theologian |
Chapter 1 summary: Introduces four doctrines (Fellowship, Assurance/Eternal Life foundation, God is Light, Cleansing/Confession/Forgiveness), all carried forward and intensified in later chapters. No chapter content is without doctrinal load; entire chapter reviewed.
Chapter 2 (1 John 2:1–29)
| Passage | Doctrine(s) Active | Risk | Key Terms | Burmese Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2:1-2 (Advocate; propitiation for the whole world) | Advocate and Intercession of Christ; Propitiation and Atonement | Critical (propitiation) / High (advocate) | advocate, propitiation, sin | Christ’s legal-defense advocacy before the Father must not suggest one intermediary among many (cf. 37-nat intercession pattern). Propitiation reverses folk-religious direction: God himself provides the sacrifice satisfying his own justice. | Human theologian |
| 2:3-6 (keeping his commandments; abiding in him) | Commandment of Love (introduced); Fellowship with God and One Another | Medium | commandment, abide | ပညတ်တော် is a relational precept from Christ flowing from love, not merit-building precept-observance (သီလ). “Abide” (တည်နေခြင်း) is continuing relational union, not meditative absorption. | Native speaker review |
| 2:7-11 (new/old commandment; love vs. hate as light/darkness test) | Commandment of Love; God is Light; Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (introduced) | High | commandment, love_for_the_brethren, light, darkness | First appearance of the love-hate/light-darkness diagnostic that structures the whole letter; failure to love a brother is darkness, not a lesser spiritual grade. | Human theologian |
| 2:12-14 (assurance addressed to children/fathers/young men; overcome the evil one) | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; Overcoming the World (introduced, re: “the evil one”) | High | assurance, overcome, devil | Victory already secured in Christ’s finished work and God’s word abiding, not self-effort over defilements (kilesa). | Human theologian |
| 2:15-17 (do not love the world; lust of flesh/eyes; pride of life; world passing away) | The World and Worldliness | High | world, worldly desires | လောက also names tiered cosmological realms (kāma-/rūpa-/arūpa-loka) in Theravada cosmology; here it is a moral-spiritual value-order opposed to God, not a cosmological tier. Risk of being misread as endorsing karma-driven renunciation rather than reordering of desire through new birth. | Human theologian |
| 2:18-19 (last hour; many antichrists; they went out from us) | Incarnation and Antichrist | Critical | antichrist | Antichrist defined by departure from apostolic confession, not a generic “end times enemy”; must never be conflated with မိတ္တေယျ (Metteyya) or Burmese folk-eschatological figures. | Human theologian |
| 2:20, 2:27 (anointing from the Holy One; you all have knowledge) | Anointing and the Holy Spirit’s Teaching Ministry | Medium | anointing, holy_spirit | ဘိသိက်တော် carries positive royal/priestly cultural resonance in Myanmar but risks being read as a rite reserved for religious specialists rather than every believer’s universal Spirit-endowment. | Native speaker review |
| 2:21-23 (denial that Jesus is the Christ = antichrist; who denies the Son) | Incarnation and Antichrist; Deity and Sonship of Christ | Critical | christ, son_of_god, antichrist | The doctrinal test hinges on confessing Jesus as the Christ, the Son — no partial or metaphorical affirmation suffices. | Human theologian |
| 2:24-25 (abide; promise of eternal life) | Fellowship with God and One Another; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | Medium/Critical | abide, eternal life | Eternal life as promised, present-possession relational life, never နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း. | Human theologian (eternal life) |
| 2:28-29 (confidence at his coming; born of him = practices righteousness) | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; New Birth | Critical | assurance, born_of_god, righteousness | Confidence (parrēsia) at Christ’s return rests on abiding union, not a fluctuating merit-tally; “born of him” first full appearance of the flagship new-birth term. | Human theologian |
Chapter 2 summary: Introduces Advocate, Propitiation, Commandment of Love, Love for the Brethren, Overcoming the World, The World and Worldliness, Incarnation and Antichrist, Anointing, and New Birth. The chapter is the letter’s densest doctrinal on-ramp after chapter 1’s foundations.
Chapter 3 (1 John 3:1–24)
| Passage | Doctrine(s) Active | Risk | Key Terms | Burmese Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:1-2 (behold what manner of love; called children of God; not yet appeared what we shall be) | Divine Sonship: Children of God; Love as God’s Prior Initiative | High/Critical | children_of_god, love | Believers’ plural, organic sonship (τέκνα) must be clearly distinguished from Christ’s own unique, singular, eternal Sonship (ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော်); results from God’s initiating love/begetting act, not religious achievement. | Human theologian |
| 3:2-3 (hope of being like him; purifies himself) | Hope of Christlikeness | Medium | hope | Confident expectation grounded in God’s certain promise, not wishful optimism or hope for favorable rebirth. | Native speaker review |
| 3:4-6 (sin is lawlessness; whoever sins has not seen/known him) | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin (lawlessness sub-concept) | High | lawlessness, sin | Sin defined relationally as rebellion against a personal God’s will, not violation of an impersonal cosmic order (dharma-like nomos-substitute risk). | Human theologian |
| 3:7-8 (he who does righteousness is righteous; he who sins is of the devil) | The Devil and the Origin of Sin; Righteousness (baseline term) | High | devil, sin, righteousness | The devil is introduced as a specific, wholly malevolent personal being permanently opposed to God — distinct from morally ambiguous, propitiable nats. | Human theologian |
| 3:9-10 (whoever is born of God does not sin; seed of God abides; children of God vs. children of the devil) | New Birth; The Devil and the Origin of Sin; Divine Sonship: Children of God | Critical/High | born_of_god, seed_of_god, devil, children_of_god | ”Seed of God” must be distinguished from kamma-bīja (karma-seeds ripening from a sower’s own past deeds); this seed is implanted by God’s grace, not self-sown. | Human theologian |
| 3:10-18 (Cain and Abel; love for the brethren as life/death marker; laying down life) | Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth; The Devil and the Origin of Sin | High | love_for_the_brethren, brother, cain_abel | Cain/Abel requires OT narrative background teaching for readers with low OT literacy; hatred of a brother is identified with murder and with the devil’s nature, not a lesser fault. | Human theologian |
| 3:14 (passed from death to life) | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life (death/life sub-concept) | Medium | death, life | Decisive, once-for-all spiritual transition already accomplished, not gradual improvement across rebirths. | Native speaker review |
| 3:17 (compassion — shutting up one’s heart) | Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | Low | compassion | Practical compassion as necessary expression of genuine love; minimal doctrinal risk. | Automated review |
| 3:19-22 (assurance before God; confidence in prayer; keeping commandments) | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; Commandment of Love | High | assurance, commandment | Confidence in prayer grounded in obedience flowing from love/faith, not merit accumulated through precept-keeping. | Human theologian |
| 3:23-24 (his commandment: believe in the Son and love one another; abide; Spirit given) | Commandment of Love; Fellowship with God and One Another; Anointing and the Holy Spirit’s Teaching Ministry | Medium | commandment, faith, abide, holy_spirit | Combines belief and love into a single commandment; Spirit’s indwelling as the ground of assurance of abiding, echoed at 4:13. | Native speaker review |
Chapter 3 summary: Develops New Birth, Divine Sonship, The Devil and Origin of Sin, and Love for the Brethren into their fullest ethical exposition ahead of chapter 4’s theological climax. Every verse maps to an active doctrine; no unreviewed content.
Chapter 4 (1 John 4:1–21) — Contains the Core Passage (4:7-21)
| Passage | Doctrine(s) Active | Risk | Key Terms | Burmese Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:1-3 (test the spirits; spirit of God vs. spirit of antichrist; confess Jesus come in the flesh) | Testing the Spirits; Incarnation and Antichrist | High/Critical | test_the_spirits, false_prophets, incarnation, antichrist | The test is doctrinal/propositional (confession of the incarnate Christ), never intuitive/trance-based discernment as with consulting a nat-medium (nat-kadaw). This passage is the doctrinal hinge of the entire letter’s Christology. | Human theologian |
| 4:4-6 (greater is he who is in you; overcome them; world/God distinction; spirit of truth/error) | Overcoming the World; Testing the Spirits | High | overcome, world, truth | Victory secured by the indwelling Spirit’s greater power, not self-generated ascetic effort. | Human theologian |
| 4:7-8 (love is of God; born of God; God is love) — CORE PASSAGE BEGINS | God is Love; New Birth; Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | Critical | love, born_of_god, love_for_the_brethren | Flagship doctrine of the whole curriculum. ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ retains မေတ္တာ (self-cultivated brahmavihāra loving-kindness); must be taught as God’s own eternal, personal, self-giving nature, historically enacted, never a self-produced contemplative state any being might equally cultivate. | Human theologian |
| 4:9-10 (God’s love manifested: sent his only Son; propitiation) | Deity and Sonship of Christ; Propitiation and Atonement; Love as God’s Prior Initiative | Critical | only_begotten_son, propitiation, love | ”Only-begotten/unique Son” (တစ်ပါးတည်းသော သားတော်) emphasizes unrepeatable, peerless Sonship against readings placing Christ among several divine sons (nats, Brahma-realm beings). | Human theologian |
| 4:11-12 (if God so loved us, we ought to love; God abides in us) | Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth; Fellowship with God and One Another | High | love, abide | Human love for one another is the necessary consequence, not the cause, of God’s love. | Human theologian |
| 4:13 (know we abide in him by the Spirit) | Fellowship with God and One Another; Anointing and the Holy Spirit’s Teaching Ministry | Medium | abide, holy_spirit | The indwelling Spirit is the objective ground of assurance of mutual abiding. | Native speaker review |
| 4:14 (testimony: Father sent the Son as Savior of the world) | Testimony of God Concerning His Son; Deity and Sonship of Christ | Critical | testimony, savior_of_the_world, son_of_god | Universal scope of Christ’s saving mission; never conflated with self-attained liberation from craving/rebirth. | Human theologian |
| 4:15 (whoever confesses Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him) | Deity and Sonship of Christ; Confession and Forgiveness of Sin (confession sub-concept) | Critical | confess, son_of_god | Confession here is the doctrinal test-statement itself, not a devotional preference. | Human theologian |
| 4:16 (God is love; he who abides in love abides in God) | God is Love; Fellowship with God and One Another | Critical | love, abide | Second, theologically identical occurrence of the letter’s central thesis (4:8/4:16); must render identically per the theological-consistency principle established in the baseline (Romans 1:16-17/8:28 mandate). | Human theologian |
| 4:17-18 (love made perfect; boldness in the day of judgment; perfect love casts out fear; no fear in love) | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; God is Love (perfect love sub-concept) | Critical | assurance, perfect_love, love | τέλειος = brought to intended completeness, not flawless performance; compounds the Critical ἀγάπη risk. Assurance rests on love’s completed security, not fear of an uncertain merit-tally or unfavorable rebirth. | Human theologian |
| 4:19 (we love because he first loved us) | Love as God’s Prior Initiative | Critical | gods_prior_love, love | Decisively excludes any works-first or merit-first framework; carries the full grace-priority weight already Critical in the Romans baseline for grace against daily merit-making practice (ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း). | Human theologian |
| 4:20-21 (if anyone says “I love God” and hates his brother, he is a liar; commandment to love brother) | Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth; Commandment of Love | High/Medium | love_for_the_brethren, brother, commandment | CORE PASSAGE CLOSES. Failure to love a brother is declared outright falsehood, not a lesser or excusable spiritual state; love for fellow believers as new spiritual family transcending blood/ethnic kinship, given the real social and family cost of conversion in Myanmar. | Human theologian |
Chapter 4 summary: Contains the curriculum’s theological anchor (4:7-21) and its single highest-stakes doctrinal-lexical decision (ἀγάπη / God is Love). Every verse in this chapter carries Critical or High doctrinal load; entire chapter requires human theologian review at Phase 2.
Chapter 5 (1 John 5:1–21)
| Passage | Doctrine(s) Active | Risk | Key Terms | Burmese Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5:1 (whoever believes Jesus is the Christ is born of God; loves the Father, loves the child) | New Birth; Deity and Sonship of Christ; Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | Critical | born_of_god, christ, love_for_the_brethren | Believing Jesus is the Christ and loving fellow-begotten believers are inseparably linked as marks of the same new birth. | Human theologian |
| 5:2-3 (love of God = keeping his commandments; commandments not burdensome) | Commandment of Love | Medium | commandment, love | Obedience flows from love and new birth’s empowering, not from precept-observance building merit standing (သီလ). | Native speaker review |
| 5:4-5 (whatever is born of God overcomes the world; faith the victory) | Overcoming the World; New Birth | High/Critical | overcome, world, born_of_god, faith | Victory is the necessary outworking of new birth and faith, not a separate spiritual attainment. | Human theologian |
| 5:6-8 (water, blood, Spirit bear witness; the Spirit is truth) | Testimony of God Concerning His Son | Medium | testimony, water_blood_spirit_triad, blood, holy_spirit | Interpretively challenging triad; component terms retain individual risk profiles (blood: Medium; Spirit: Critical). Requires native-speaker confirmation of the combined rendering’s coherence. | Native speaker review |
| 5:9-13 (testimony of God greater than man’s; testimony concerning his Son; he who has the Son has life; written that you may know you have eternal life) | Testimony of God Concerning His Son; Deity and Sonship of Christ; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | Critical | testimony, son_of_god, eternal_life, assurance | Central assurance passage of the letter’s conclusion; eternal life as present possession grounded in having the Son, never নিব্বান-compatible language of self-attained extinguishing of craving. | Human theologian |
| 5:14-15 (confidence/boldness in prayer; he hears us) | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | High | assurance | Confidence in access to a personal God in prayer, not petitioning intermediary nats for favorable response. | Human theologian |
| 5:16-17 (sin unto death; not unto death; pastoral intercession) | Sin unto Death and Pastoral Intercession | Medium | sin_unto_death, sin | ”Death” is spiritual/eternal separation from a personal God, not literal death or an inferior future rebirth destiny; requires careful pastoral framing distinct from karmic retribution categories. | Native speaker review |
| 5:18 (whoever is born of God does not sin; God’s begotten one keeps him; wicked one does not touch him) | New Birth; The Devil and the Origin of Sin | Critical/High | born_of_god, devil | Reaffirms new birth’s security against the devil’s touch — protective, relational security, not karmic immunity. | Human theologian |
| 5:19 (we are of God; whole world lies in the wickedness of the evil one) | The World and Worldliness; The Devil and the Origin of Sin | High | world, devil | Reinforces the moral-spiritual (not cosmological-tier) sense of “world” established at 2:15-17. | Human theologian |
| 5:20 (Son of God has come; gives understanding; true God; eternal life) | Deity and Sonship of Christ; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; God is Light (truth sub-concept) | Critical | son_of_god, true (of God), eternal_life | ”True God” (စစ်မှန်သော ဘုရားသခင်) reinforces exclusivity — never merely one genuine option among several ဘုရား-labeled objects of devotion. | Human theologian |
| 5:21 (little children, keep yourselves from idols) | Idolatry Warning | High | idols, true_god | ရုပ်တု distinct from generic ဘုရားပုံ/ဘုရားရုပ် (Buddha images), but given the visual/devotional centrality of Buddha images and nat shrines in Myanmar life, this closing command requires sensitive pastoral framing distinguishing exclusive worship of ဘုရားသခင် alone from any competing object, image, or practice. Closing verse of the letter; carries disproportionate doctrinal weight as the final word to the reader. | Human theologian |
Chapter 5 summary: Brings New Birth, Deity/Sonship of Christ, Overcoming the World, Testimony, Assurance/Eternal Life, Sin unto Death, and the Devil doctrines to their concluding statements, closing with the Idolatry Warning as the letter’s final pastoral charge. Entire chapter reviewed; no section without active doctrinal content.

Totals (must equal doctrine_risk_registry.json risk_summary): Critical: 7 · High: 11 · Medium: 6 · Low: 0 · Total: 24 doctrines. Theologian review: 18. Native speaker review: 6. Automated-only: 0 (the one Low-risk item, “compassion,” 3:17, is a supporting sub-term rather than a registry-level doctrine and is folded into Love for the Brethren for review-routing purposes).
Full-book coverage confirmation: All five chapters of 1 John (1:1 through 5:21) have been reviewed verse-range by verse-range above. No chapter or major section was found to be doctrinally inert; 1 John’s density of theological assertion per verse is unusually high relative to typical Pauline argumentative prose, which the Phase 2 workload planning should anticipate.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Burmese name: ကယ်တင်ခြင်းနှင့် ထာဝရအသက်ရှိသည်ဟု သေချာစိတ်ချခြင်း
Key terms: eternal_life, assurance, salvation, born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Eternal life must never be taught compatibly with နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း (attaining nirvana, the self-attained extinguishing of craving and rebirth) nor with an indefinitely extended but still-impermanent existence such as the long-lived deva/Brahma realms. Assurance rests on God’s unchanging character and Christ’s finished work, never an uncertain merit-tally comparable to a karma ledger.
Deity and Sonship of Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏ ဘုရားဇာတိနှင့် သားတော်ဇာတိ
Key terms: son_of_god, only_begotten_son, christ
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s eternal, unique, co-equal Sonship must never be read as a metaphorical title, an honorary status, or one divine son among the ranked nat-spirit hierarchy or Brahma cosmology’s celestial beings.
God is Love
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်သည် ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာဖြစ်တော်မူခြင်း
Key terms: love, god_is_love, gods_prior_love
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: The established compound ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ retains မေတ္တာ, the first of the four brahmavihāra — a meditatively self-cultivated, impersonal loving-kindness generated by a practitioner’s own mental discipline and extended universally without reference to any personal source. 1 John presents ἀγάπη as God’s own eternal, personal, self-giving nature, historically enacted by sending the Son to die, and given to believers relationally — never a self-produced contemplative state any being might equally cultivate. This is the single highest-stakes doctrinal-lexical decision in the curriculum.
The Incarnation and Antichrist
Burmese name: လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်းနှင့် အန္တီခရစ်
Key terms: incarnation, antichrist, christ, test_the_spirits
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: The letter’s doctrinal test for distinguishing the Spirit of God from the spirit of antichrist rests entirely on confessing Jesus Christ’s permanent, real, once-for-all coming in the flesh. Never rendered with ဘုရားလောင်းအဖြစ်မွေးဖွားခြင်း (Jataka-style Buddha-to-be birth) or နတ်ဆင်းသက်ခြင်း (nat-spirit descent). Antichrist must never be conflated with မိတ္တေယျ (the future Buddha, Metteyya) or any Burmese folk-eschatological figure.
Love as God’s Prior Initiative
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်၏ ရှေးဦးစွာချစ်တော်မူခြင်း
Key terms: gods_prior_love, love, propitiation
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ‘We love because he first loved us’ decisively excludes any works-first or merit-first framework; carries the entire weight of the grace-priority argument already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline for grace (ကျေးဇူးတော်) against the daily lay practice of merit-making (ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း).
New Birth (Born of God)
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်ထံမှ ဖွားမြင်ခြင်းခံရခြင်း
Key terms: born_of_god, children_of_god, seed_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: never render with ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း or ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း (rebirth within the cycle of samsara), the same terms the Romans baseline already forbids for ‘resurrection.’ New birth is a single, permanent, once-for-all begetting by a personal God, not a rebirth determined by accumulated karma.
Propitiation and Atonement
Burmese name: အပြစ်ဖြေရာယဇ်တော်
Key terms: propitiation, blood, salvation
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: God himself provides the sacrifice that satisfies his own justice — the reverse direction of Burmese folk-religious practice, where a human offerer presents a sacrifice to a nat or spirit to appease its anger. Never rendered with vocabulary suggesting a human-initiated appeasement offering.
High Risk Doctrines
The Advocate and Intercession of Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏ ခုခံချေပပေးမှုနှင့် အသနားခံမှု
Key terms: advocate, propitiation
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s specific legal-defense advocacy before the Father must not be rendered so as to suggest petitioning one intermediary among many, a pattern culturally reinforced by appeals to the 37 nats or other spirit-intercessors in Burmese folk practice.
Cleansing from Sin
Burmese name: အပြစ်မှ သန့်ရှင်းစေခြင်း
Key terms: cleanse, blood, sin
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s moral-forensic cleansing through Christ’s blood must not be rendered with vocabulary evoking ritual/ceremonial washing performed at pagodas or shrines, or purification rites preceding merit-making acts.
Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Burmese name: အပြစ်ဝန်ခံခြင်းနှင့် အပြစ်ခွင့်လွှတ်ခြင်း
Key terms: confess, forgive, sin
Review routing: Human theologian
Confession here is a specific, doctrinally content-bearing declaration to a personal God, not the monastic/Vinaya-style peer confession of infractions used to maintain purity status within the sangha; forgiveness is God’s immediate, complete judicial pardon based on Christ’s blood, not the gradual working-off of အကုသိုလ် (demerit) through compensating good works.
Believers’ Sonship: Children of God
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်၏ သားသမီးအဖြစ် ခံယူရခြင်း
Key terms: children_of_god, born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Believers’ plural, organic sonship (τέκνα) must be clearly distinguished from Christ’s own unique, singular, eternal Sonship (ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော်), and must not be read as a status attained through religious achievement rather than God’s own begetting act.
God is Light
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်သည် အလင်းတော်ဖြစ်တော်မူခြင်း
Key terms: light, darkness, god
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s own moral purity and self-disclosure must not be conflated with ပညာအလင်းရောင်, the light of insight self-attained by a meditator through disciplined vipassana practice; God’s light is his own eternal nature, never an achievement.
Idolatry Warning
Burmese name: ရုပ်တုကိုးကွယ်မှုမှ ရှောင်ကြဉ်ရန် သတိပေးချက်
Key terms: idols, true_god, god
Review routing: Human theologian
ရုပ်တု is distinct from generic ဘုရားပုံ/ဘုရားရုပ် (Buddha images), but given the visual and devotional centrality of Buddha images and nat shrines in Myanmar religious life, this closing command requires sensitive pastoral framing that clearly distinguishes exclusive worship due to ဘုရားသခင် alone from any object, image, or practice competing for that devotion.
Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Burmese name: ညီအစ်ကိုချစ်ခြင်းသည် ဘုရားသခင်ထံမှ ဖွားမြင်ခြင်းခံရသည့် သက်သေဖြစ်ခြင်း
Key terms: love_for_the_brethren, brother, born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Love for fellow believers as new spiritual family must be taught as transcending blood and ethnic kinship, given the real social and family cost of leaving Buddhist family/community networks upon conversion; failure to love a brother is declared outright falsehood (ψεύστης), not a lesser or excusable spiritual state.
Overcoming the World
Burmese name: လောကကို အောင်နိုင်ခြင်း
Key terms: overcome, world, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
Victory over the world’s opposing value-system is achieved by faith in Christ’s finished work and God’s gift of new birth, not by the self-effort-driven ‘overcoming’ of defilements (kilesa) pursued through one’s own meditative discipline.
Testing the Spirits
Burmese name: ဝိညာဉ်များကို စစ်ဆေးခြင်း
Key terms: test_the_spirits, false_prophets, incarnation
Review routing: Human theologian
The biblical test is doctrinal and propositional — does the spirit’s teaching confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh? — and must be distinguished from the Burmese folk-religious practice of consulting a spirit-medium (nat-kadaw) in trance to discern a spirit’s message or intention.
The Devil and the Origin of Sin
Burmese name: မာရ်နတ်နှင့် အပြစ်၏ ဇစ်မြစ်
Key terms: devil, sin, lawlessness
Review routing: Human theologian
The devil is a specific, wholly malevolent, personal being permanently opposed to God, distinct from the generic, morally ambiguous nats of Burmese folk religion who may be propitiated, negotiated with, or venerated for favor.
The World and Worldliness
Burmese name: လောကနှင့် လောကီစွဲလမ်းမှု
Key terms: world, worldly_desires
Review routing: Human theologian
လောက also denotes tiered cosmological realms (kāma-/rūpa-/arūpa-loka) structured by karma in Theravada cosmology. 1 John’s κόσμος is a moral-spiritual order of values opposed to God that is passing away, not a cosmological tier; without explicit teaching, 2:15-17 could be misread as endorsing karma-driven renunciation of desire rather than the reordering of desire through new birth.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Anointing and the Holy Spirit’s Teaching Ministry
Burmese name: ဘိသိက်တော်နှင့် သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော်၏ သွန်သင်မှု
Key terms: anointing, holy_spirit
Review routing: Native speaker review
ဘိသိက်တော် carries positive Myanmar cultural resonance (royal/priestly consecration) but risks being understood as a rite reserved for religious specialists rather than the universal indwelling given to every believer; native-speaker review should confirm the surrounding context makes the universality explicit.
The Commandment of Love
Burmese name: ချစ်ခြင်းဆိုင်ရာ ပညတ်တော်
Key terms: commandment, love_for_the_brethren
Review routing: Native speaker review
The command to love, received personally from Christ and flowing from relationship, must not be taught as a precept observed for merit-building religious discipline (သီလ) comparable to lay Buddhist precept-keeping.
Fellowship with God and One Another
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်နှင့်၊ အချင်းချင်း မိတ်သဟာယဖွဲ့ခြင်း
Key terms: fellowship, abide, word_of_life
Review routing: Native speaker review
မိတ်သဟာယ itself carries low lexical risk, but the doctrine’s centrality to the letter’s stated purpose (1:3-4) requires native-speaker confirmation that it is taught as shared participatory union with a personal God and his people, not mere social camaraderie within a religious association or monastery-affiliated lay community.
Hope of Christlikeness
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်နှင့်တူရန် မျှော်လင့်ခြင်း
Key terms: hope
Review routing: Native speaker review
Hope must convey confident expectation grounded in God’s certain promise, not an uncertain wish or a Buddhist aspiration toward a favorable future rebirth.
Sin unto Death and Pastoral Intercession
Burmese name: သေခြင်းသို့ဆိုက်စေသောအပြစ်နှင့် ဆုတောင်းအသနားခံခြင်း
Key terms: sin_unto_death, sin
Review routing: Native speaker review
‘Death’ here is spiritual/eternal separation from a personal God, not literal death or an inferior future rebirth destiny; requires careful pastoral framing distinct from karmic retribution categories.
The Testimony of God Concerning His Son
Burmese name: သားတော်နှင့်ပတ်သက်သော ဘုရားသခင်၏ သက်သေခံချက်
Key terms: testimony, water_blood_spirit_triad
Review routing: Native speaker review
God’s own formal, authoritative testimony concerning the Son, of greater weight than any human testimony; requires native-speaker confirmation of the water/blood/Spirit triad’s interpretive rendering alongside its component Critical/Medium term risks.
