Cross-Reference Analysis

09 Cross-Reference Analysis — Ephesians 1–6 (English → Burmese)

Purpose and Method

This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every parallel to the Romans curriculum (the only other curriculum with an established Language Package for Burmese) found across the full text of Ephesians, chapter by chapter. It exists to protect rendering consistency: where Ephesians and Romans quote or allude to the same underlying Hebrew/Greek text, or use overlapping theological vocabulary, the Burmese rendering must not drift between curricula. Citations are given in normalized form (e.g., Ephesians 2:16, Genesis 15:6, Isaiah 28:16) for machine cross-referencing in later Phase 2 steps.

Column definitions for the matrix:

  • Passage — the Ephesians verse(s) under analysis, normalized citation.
  • Theme — the doctrinal/thematic category (mapped to the nine curriculum doctrines where applicable).
  • Related Character — biblical person(s) named or typologically invoked.
  • OT/NT Connection — the specific Old Testament (or, where relevant, other New Testament) text quoted or alluded to, normalized citation.
  • Translation Sensitivity — the risk tier and specific guidance for Burmese rendering, cross-referenced to 07_semantic_analysis.md / 08_core_glossary.md term entries and the Romans baseline where applicable.

Risk tiers follow the baseline’s definitions: Critical (theologian review, every occurrence), High (theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review).

PART 1 — Chapter-by-Chapter Cross-Reference Matrix

Chapter 1 — Election, Redemption, the Mystery of God’s Will

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Ephesians 1:3Blessing / GraceAbraham (typological)Genesis 12:2-3 (Abrahamic blessing formula); Psalm 103:1-2 (berakah pattern)Medium. “Blessed” (ကောင်းချီးမင်္ဂလာ) must not read as ကံကောင်းမှု (good fortune/karma); it is God’s sovereign initiative toward the objects of his choosing, continuing the baseline’s grace guardrail.
Ephesians 1:4-5Election and Predestination in ChristDeuteronomy 7:6-8 (God’s unmerited choice of Israel, “not because you were more numerous… but because the LORD loved you”); parallels Romans 8:29-30, Romans 9:11-13Critical. Must be rendered with ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း / ကြိုတင်ခန့်ထားတော်မူသော exactly as fixed in 08_core_glossary.md #7, #29. Never ကံဇာတာ/ကံကြမ္မာ. Deuteronomy 7:6-8 is the OT root-pattern of unmerited divine choice and should anchor teaching notes here.
Ephesians 1:6-7Grace / RedemptionExodus 6:6 (“I will redeem you with an outstretched arm”); Leviticus 25:47-49 (kinsman-redeemer ransom); Isaiah 43:1 (“I have redeemed you; I have called you by name”)High. ရွေးနှင်းခြင်း (redemption) must convey a price paid by another on the captive’s behalf — the OT kinsman-redeemer and Exodus-redemption pattern — not self-achieved liberation.
Ephesians 1:7 (“through his blood”)The Mystery of Christ Revealed / AtonementChristLeviticus 17:11 (“the life… is in the blood… it is the blood that makes atonement”); Exodus 12:13 (Passover blood)High. Blood-atonement has no native equivalent in Burmese Buddhist ritual (no blood sacrifice system); requires explicit teaching note that this is the fulfillment of the OT sacrificial system, once for all, not a ritual analogous to local offering practices.
Ephesians 1:9-10The Mystery of Christ RevealedDaniel 2:28-29,47 (mystery revealed by God); Genesis 1:1 (creation, “fullness of time” as recapitulation of all things)High. “Mystery” (see Table 2 below) must be taught as now-disclosed, not an esoteric secret.
Ephesians 1:11Election and Predestination in ChristNumbers 34 / Joshua 13-19 (Israel’s allotted inheritance, κληρονομία background); parallels Romans 8:28-30Critical. Same guardrail as 1:4-5.
Ephesians 1:13-14Election and Predestination in ChristEzekiel 9:4 (a mark/seal placed on the foreheads of God’s own before judgment)High. “Sealed” (တံဆိပ်ခတ်တော်မူသည်) must be distinguished from protective amulets/tattoos (in-saq) in Burmese folk practice; the seal here marks divine ownership, not magical self-protection.
Ephesians 1:17The Mystery of Christ RevealedChrist (Messiah)Isaiah 11:2 (“the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him… the Spirit of wisdom”)High. A messianic endowment (Isaiah 11:2) is here requested for ordinary believers by virtue of union with Christ — must not be flattened into generic wisdom-seeking.
Ephesians 1:19-21Election and Predestination in ChristChristPsalm 110:1 (“Sit at my right hand…”); Daniel 7:13-14 (Son of Man given everlasting dominion)Critical. Directly undergirds Lordship of Christ and Deity of Christ doctrines already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline; Psalm 110:1 is quoted/echoed extensively across the NT (Matthew 22:44, Acts 2:34-35, Hebrews 1:13) and must be rendered so that future curricula referencing Psalm 110 remain consistent with this occurrence.
Ephesians 1:21Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God (foreshadowing)Daniel 10:13, 20-21 (territorial angelic “princes”); Daniel 7:27 (dominion given to the saints)High. First appearance of the “rulers and authorities” vocabulary developed fully in Ephesians 3:10 and Ephesians 6:12; consistency of အထွဋ်အမြတ်များနှင့် အာဏာပိုင်များ required across all three occurrences.
Ephesians 1:22The Church as the Body of ChristChristDirect quotation: Psalm 8:6 (“You have put all things under his feet”)Critical. Also underlies 1 Corinthians 15:27 and Hebrews 2:6-8 (other curricula, future note). Christ’s cosmic supremacy over creation, applied here specifically to his headship of the church — must retain the totality (“all things,” ခပ်သိမ်းသောအရာ) without qualification.
Ephesians 1:23The Church as the Body of ChristGenesis 1:26-28 (dominion mandate, background typology of Christ as the true image-bearer who fulfills what Adam did not)High. “Fullness” (ပြည့်စုံခြင်း) — see glossary #38; keep distinct from any Gnostic emanation-hierarchy misreading.

Chapter 2 — Salvation by Grace, and One New Humanity

(Verses 1–10 constitute the core passage; OT/NT connections for these verses are given here for completeness, cross-referenced to the full verse-by-verse doctrinal treatment already completed in 07_semantic_analysis.md.)

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Ephesians 2:1-3Salvation by Grace through Faith (universal need)Genesis 6:5 (universal corruption before the Flood); Psalm 51:5 (sinful from conception); parallels Romans 1:18–3:20High. Reinforces “Universal Human Accountability” doctrine already flagged High in the Romans baseline; must not soften into a graded merit-scale.
Ephesians 2:3Salvation by Grace through FaithPsalm 7:11 (“God is a righteous judge… who has indignation every day”); Nahum 1:2-3 (the LORD’s jealous, righteous anger)Critical. “Children of wrath by nature” — God’s wrath must be the personal, righteous judicial anger of a holy Creator, never impersonal karmic consequence. Same guardrail as 07_semantic_analysis.md core-passage entry.
Ephesians 2:4Salvation by Grace through FaithExodus 34:6-7 (“the LORD, merciful and gracious…”); Psalm 103:8-10High. “Rich in mercy” — mercy as a personal divine attribute rooted in God’s OT self-revelation to Moses, not cultivated compassion (ကရုဏာ).
Ephesians 2:5,8Salvation by Grace through FaithDirect doctrinal parallel: Romans 3:24, Romans 4:4-5, Romans 11:5-6; conceptual echo of Genesis 15:6 (righteousness reckoned by faith, not works)Critical. This is the doctrinal center of the curriculum. See Part 3 below for the mandatory rendering-consistency rule linking Ephesians 2:8-9 to Romans 3-4 and 11:5-6.
Ephesians 2:6Election and Predestination in ChristChristPsalm 110:1 (enthronement, continued from 1:20)Critical, same as 1:20 entry.
Ephesians 2:10Walking in Newness of LifeGenesis 1:26-27 (humanity made in God’s image); Isaiah 64:8 (potter and clay, God as maker)High. “Workmanship” (ဘုရားသခင်၏လက်ရာ) — divine craftsmanship, echoing Genesis creation vocabulary; must not reopen self-effort excluded in 2:8-9.
Ephesians 2:11-12Unity of Jews and GentilesAbraham (covenant father)Genesis 17:10-14 (circumcision as covenant sign); Exodus 12:48 (the uncircumcised stranger excluded from Passover)Medium. Requires OT covenant-sign background teaching; parallels the baseline’s note on “seed_of_David” requiring similar OT background.
Ephesians 2:13, 2:17Unity of Jews and GentilesAllusion/near-quotation: Isaiah 57:19 (“peace, peace, to the far and to the near”)High. See Part 3 rendering-consistency rule: Isaiah’s “far/near” peace formula reappears independently in Romans 10:15 (quoting Isaiah 52:7) — both must use ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း consistently though they cite different Isaiah verses.
Ephesians 2:14-16Unity of Jews and GentilesBackground: the Second Temple’s soreg/balustrade dividing the Court of the Gentiles (historical, not a Scripture citation); thematically related to Numbers 18:7 and Ezekiel 44:9 (restricted sanctuary access for foreigners)High. The “dividing wall of hostility” is torn down in Christ; by clear extension this challenges any Bamar-Buddhist-majority/ethnic-minority-Christian barrier framing, echoing the Romans baseline’s “Unity of Jews and Gentiles” High-risk doctrine note.
Ephesians 2:19Unity of Jews and GentilesRuth (typological forerunner)Ruth 1:16 (a Gentile incorporated into Israel: “your people shall be my people”); Exodus 12:48-49 (sojourner provisions)Medium. “Fellow citizens… household of God” — full, equal belonging, foreshadowed by Ruth’s incorporation narrative.
Ephesians 2:20The Church as the Body of ChristChristDirect allusion: Isaiah 28:16 (“a tested stone, a precious cornerstone”); Psalm 118:22 (“the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone”)Critical. See Part 3 below — Isaiah 28:16 is ALSO quoted directly in Romans 9:33 and Romans 10:11 (a different clause of the same verse: “whoever believes in him will not be put to shame”). Mandatory cross-curricular rendering-consistency rule applies.
Ephesians 2:21-22The Church as the Body of ChristExodus 25:8 (“that I may dwell in their midst”); 1 Kings 8:10-13 (glory-cloud filling Solomon’s temple); Ezekiel 37:27 (future dwelling among God’s people)Critical. The church as God’s living temple must never be rendered in a way that suggests a physical pagoda/monastery (ဘုရားကျောင်း/ဘုရားရိပ်သာ), directly extending the baseline’s existing Critical-adjacent caution on “church.”

Chapter 3 — The Mystery of Christ and the Church’s Cosmic Purpose

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Ephesians 3:2-6The Mystery of Christ Revealed / Unity of Jews and GentilesAbrahamGenesis 12:3, Genesis 22:18 (“in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed… your offspring shall bless all nations”); Isaiah 49:6 (“a light for the nations”)High. Directly parallels Romans 4 (Abraham as father of all who believe, circumcised or not) and Romans 15:8-12 (root of Jesse, nations). The “mystery” content (Gentiles as full co-heirs) is the fulfillment of the Abrahamic promise, not a novel addendum to it.
Ephesians 3:6Unity of Jews and GentilesGenesis 15:18-21 (the land covenant given to Abraham’s seed, background for κληρονομία/inheritance imagery applied spiritually)Medium-High.
Ephesians 3:9The Mystery of Christ RevealedDaniel 2:22, 28-29 (God who reveals mysteries)High.
Ephesians 3:14-15Election and Predestination in ChristGenesis 12:3 (“all the families of the earth”); Psalm 68:5-6 (God as father to the fatherless)Critical. “Father” (အဖ) — never ဗြဟ္မာ; here explicitly universalized (“every family… named”), reinforcing the personal-Fatherhood guardrail across every occurrence in the letter.
Ephesians 3:20The Mystery of Christ RevealedIsaiah 64:4 (“no eye has seen… what God has prepared”)Low-Medium. Doxological; minimal collision risk.

Chapter 4 — Unity, Gifts, and the New Self

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Ephesians 4:4-6The Church as the Body of ChristAllusion: Deuteronomy 6:4 (“Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one”)Critical. The sevenfold “one” creed’s climactic “one God and Father of all” is rooted in the Shema’s exclusive monotheism — must not be softened in a Burmese religious environment with a populated nat-spirit pantheon; the numerical singularity (“one… one… one”) must be syntactically emphatic in Burmese, not read as merely “a god among several.”
Ephesians 4:8Gifts for Building Up the ChurchChrist (Messiah, the Ascended King)Direct quotation: Psalm 68:18 (“When he ascended on high, he led captives… and gave gifts to men”)Critical. The messianic-typological anchor for the entire “gift-offices” doctrine (4:11-12). Paul reinterprets a royal victory-procession psalm as Christ’s ascension and gift-giving to the church. Must be flagged for theologian review; any future curriculum treating Psalm 68 must match this rendering.
Ephesians 4:9-10Gifts for Building Up the Church / The Mystery of Christ RevealedChristContinuation of Psalm 68:18 typology; NOT to be conflated with the distinct “who will ascend/descend” language of Deuteronomy 30:12-14, which Paul separately reinterprets in Romans 10:6-8High — false-parallel warning. These are two different OT source texts (Psalm 68 vs. Deuteronomy 30) that produce superficially similar “ascended/descended” English phrasing in Ephesians and Romans respectively. Translators must NOT harmonize or cross-borrow phrasing between Ephesians 4:9-10 and Romans 10:6-8; each must be rendered from its own governing OT source and kept textually distinct.
Ephesians 4:13Election and Predestination in Christ / Gifts for Building Up the ChurchChrist (Son of God)Builds on Romans baseline “Son of God” (Critical)Critical, per baseline.
Ephesians 4:22-24Walking in Newness of LifeAdam (typological, old humanity)Allusion: Genesis 1:26-27 (“created… after the likeness of God”); conceptual parallel to Romans 6:6 (the old self crucified with Christ)High. “Old self / new self” — the “new self” is explicitly re-created in God’s likeness, recapitulating Genesis creation language and paralleling Romans 6:6’s crucifixion-of-the-old-self imagery; must be a decisive, once-for-all identity change, not gradual self-improvement.
Ephesians 4:25Christ-Centered Relationships (mutual edification)Direct quotation: Zechariah 8:16 (“Speak the truth to one another”)Medium.
Ephesians 4:26Christ-Centered RelationshipsDirect quotation: Psalm 4:4 (“Be angry, and do not sin”)Medium.
Ephesians 4:28Christ-Centered RelationshipsExodus 20:15 (the eighth commandment, “you shall not steal”)Low-Medium.
Ephesians 4:30Walking in Newness of LifeHoly SpiritEzekiel 9:4 (sealing mark, continued from 1:13-14)Critical. “Grieve the Holy Spirit” reinforces the Spirit’s personhood — never an impersonal force.

Chapter 5 — Walking in Love and Light; Christ-Centered Marriage

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Ephesians 5:2Christ-Centered RelationshipsChristExodus 29:18, Leviticus 1:9 (a pleasing-aroma offering); Psalm 40:6-8High. “Offering and sacrifice” — OT sacrificial fulfillment, once for all; not analogous to Buddhist ritual merit-offerings (ပူဇော်ခြင်း) to images or spirits.
Ephesians 5:3-5Walking in Newness of LifeExodus 20 / Deuteronomy 5 (commandments against covetousness, adultery)Medium.
Ephesians 5:6Salvation by Grace through FaithContinuation of Ephesians 2:3’s wrath vocabulary; parallels Romans 1:18Critical, same guardrail as 2:3.
Ephesians 5:8-14Walking in Newness of LifeIsaiah 5:20 (inverted light/darkness, a woe pronounced); Isaiah 60:1-2 (“Arise, shine, for your light has come”)Medium-High.
Ephesians 5:14Walking in Newness of LifeChristComposite allusion/hymn citation: Isaiah 26:19 (the dead shall live, awake and sing) and Isaiah 60:1 (arise, shine, the glory of the LORD has risen)High. Paul introduces this with a citation formula (“Therefore it says…”), signaling he treats it as authoritative quoted material even though it is a composite/early-hymn form; render with the same citation-consistency care as a direct OT quotation.
Ephesians 5:18Walking in Newness of LifeProverbs 23:20-21, 31 (warning against wine/drunkenness)Low-Medium.
Ephesians 5:22-33Household Codes and Christ-Centered RelationshipsChrist; the Church (as Bride)Genesis 2:18-24 (institution of marriage); Hosea 1–3 (the LORD as Israel’s husband, covenant marriage); Isaiah 54:5, Isaiah 62:5 (God as husband/bridegroom)Critical/High. The Christ-church marriage typology recapitulates the entire OT marriage-covenant motif (Hosea, Isaiah); headship must be taught inseparably from Christ’s self-sacrificial love (5:25), not detached patriarchal authority.
Ephesians 5:31Household Codes and Christ-Centered RelationshipsAdam, Eve (Genesis narrative)Direct quotation: Genesis 2:24 (“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”)Critical. Also quoted in Matthew 19:5, Mark 10:7-8, 1 Corinthians 6:16. Must be rendered identically wherever any future curriculum quotes Genesis 2:24.

Chapter 6 — Household Codes Continued; Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Ephesians 6:1-3Household Codes and Christ-Centered RelationshipsMoses (lawgiver)Direct quotation: Exodus 20:12 / Deuteronomy 5:16 (“Honor your father and your mother, that it may go well with you and that you may live long on the earth”)Medium. The fifth commandment quoted with its attached promise; “in the Lord” (6:1) must be preserved as the Christ-centering qualifier distinguishing this from generic Confucian-style filial duty or Buddhist parental-merit veneration.
Ephesians 6:4Household Codes and Christ-Centered RelationshipsDeuteronomy 6:6-7 (diligent parental instruction); Proverbs 22:6Medium.
Ephesians 6:5-9Household Codes and Christ-Centered RelationshipsLeviticus 25:39-43 (Hebrew servant laws limiting absolute claims over a bondservant); Job 31:13-15 (a master accountable to the same Maker as his servant); Deuteronomy 10:17 / Leviticus 19:15 (“no partiality”)Medium-High. Paul relativizes, not sanctions, the institution; masters are warned they have a heavenly Master who shows no partiality (6:9) — must not be rendered to suggest divine endorsement of caste-like servitude.
Ephesians 6:10-11Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of GodIsaiah 59:17 (the LORD himself puts on righteousness as a breastplate and salvation as a helmet — background for the entire armor list); 1 Samuel 17 (David/Goliath, contrast of human vs. divinely-supplied armor)High.
Ephesians 6:12Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of GodSatan/the devil; (typologically) the “prince of Persia,” “prince of Greece”Direct typological connection: Daniel 10:13, Daniel 10:20-21 (territorial angelic princes contesting God’s messengers); Daniel 12:1 (Michael’s role in cosmic conflict); Job 1:6-12, Job 2:1-6 (Satan’s limited access before God’s throne)Critical. The densest spiritual-power vocabulary cluster in the letter; must be taught as continuous with Daniel’s and Job’s portrayal of a real, personal, but subordinate spiritual conflict under God’s ultimate sovereignty — never as an unbounded pantheon of nats to be negotiated with. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence, consistent with 08_core_glossary.md #95.
Ephesians 6:14aSpiritual Warfare and the Armor of GodChrist (Messiah, typologically)Direct allusion: Isaiah 11:5 (“Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins”)Critical. This is originally messianic self-description (the coming Davidic king of Isaiah 11) now extended to the church as shared armor — a typological transfer from Messiah to his people that must be explicitly taught, not read as a generic virtue list.
Ephesians 6:14bSpiritual Warfare and the Armor of GodDirect allusion: Isaiah 59:17a (“he put on righteousness as a breastplate”)Critical (righteousness term, per baseline).
Ephesians 6:15Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of GodDirect allusion: Isaiah 52:7 (“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace”)Critical. See Part 3 below — Isaiah 52:7 is ALSO quoted directly in Romans 10:15. Mandatory cross-curricular rendering-consistency rule applies to “gospel of peace.”
Ephesians 6:16Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of GodPsalm 18:2, Psalm 91:4 (the LORD as shield/refuge)Medium-High.
Ephesians 6:17aSpiritual Warfare and the Armor of GodDirect allusion: Isaiah 59:17b (“and a helmet of salvation”)Critical (salvation term, per baseline).
Ephesians 6:17bSpiritual Warfare and the Armor of GodIsaiah 49:2 (“he made my mouth like a sharp sword”); conceptual NT parallel Hebrews 4:12High.

PART 3 — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum and Mandatory Rendering-Consistency Rules

Because Burmese Bible-study learners will move between the Romans and Ephesians curricula, any point where both letters quote, allude to, or theologically parallel the same underlying text must produce an identical or harmonized Burmese rendering. The following rules are binding for Phase 2 translation memory extension.

Rule 1 — Isaiah 28:16 (cornerstone / “will not be put to shame”)

  • Romans 9:33, Romans 10:11 quote the clause “whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
  • Ephesians 2:20 alludes to the same verse’s “cornerstone” clause.
  • Rule: The Burmese rendering of ကျောက်ဖြစ်ခြင်း (the stone) and ထောင့်ချုပ်ကျောက် (cornerstone) in Ephesians 2:20 must be recognizable as drawn from the same Isaiah source already rendered in the Romans materials for 9:33/10:11. A translator note should cross-link both curricula’s occurrences of Isaiah 28:16.

Rule 2 — Isaiah 52:7 (“beautiful feet,” gospel of peace)

  • Romans 10:15 directly quotes Isaiah 52:7 in full (“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news”).
  • Ephesians 6:15 alludes to the same verse in “having shod your feet with the readiness given by the gospel of peace.”
  • Rule: “Gospel” (သတင်းကောင်း) and “peace” (ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း) must be rendered identically in both occurrences, since both derive from the same Isaiah text. The compound “gospel of peace” in Ephesians 6:15 should read as သတင်းကောင်း၏ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း or an equivalent construction that a Burmese reader can recognize as cognate with the Romans 10:15 rendering.

Rule 3 — Isaiah 57:19 vs. Isaiah 52:7 (“peace” texts — false-conflation warning)

  • Ephesians 2:13, 2:17 allude to Isaiah 57:19 (“peace to him who is far and to him who is near”).
  • Romans 10:15 quotes the distinct Isaiah 52:7 “peace” text.
  • Rule: These are two different Isaiah verses. Both must use ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း for “peace,” but translators must not merge the two citations into a single composite quotation. Each should retain its own normalized citation (Isaiah 57:19 for Ephesians 2:13/17; Isaiah 52:7 for Romans 10:15 and Ephesians 6:15) in the segment cache metadata.

Rule 4 — Genesis 15:6 and the Grace/Works Antithesis

  • Romans 4:3, 4:9, 4:22 directly quote Genesis 15:6 (“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”).
  • Ephesians 2:8-9 does not quote Genesis 15:6 directly but restates the identical doctrinal antithesis (grace/faith vs. works) in its most concentrated NT form.
  • Rule: The Burmese rendering of “grace” (ကျေးဇူးတော်), “faith” (ယုံကြည်ခြင်း), and “works” (ကောင်းမှုအကျင့်) in Ephesians 2:8-9 must match the Romans 3-4 and 11:5-6 renderings term-for-term with no variation in structure or vocabulary choice. This is the single highest-priority consistency rule in this document, given that both curricula’s central soteriological claim depends on identical phrasing being recognizable to the same learner community.

Rule 5 — Deuteronomy 30:12-14 vs. Psalm 68:18 (ascend/descend — false-parallel warning)

  • Romans 10:6-8 quotes and reinterprets Deuteronomy 30:12-14 (“Who will ascend… who will descend…”).
  • Ephesians 4:8-10 quotes and reinterprets Psalm 68:18, independently developing its own “descended… ascended” typology of Christ.
  • Rule: These are two textually unrelated OT passages that happen to produce similar English “ascend/descend” phrasing in translation. Translators must NOT harmonize the Burmese wording between Ephesians 4:9-10 and Romans 10:6-8, and must record each with its distinct normalized citation (Deuteronomy 30:12-14 for Romans; Psalm 68:18 for Ephesians) to prevent a reader from assuming a single shared quotation.

Rule 6 — “Armor” vocabulary: Romans 13:12 vs. Ephesians 6:11-17 (near-parallel, not identical)

  • Romans 13:12 exhorts believers to “put on the armor of light” (ὅπλα τοῦ φωτός — “weapons/armor of light”).
  • Ephesians 6:11-17 develops the full “whole armor of God” (πανοπλία τοῦ Θεοῦ) with six named pieces.
  • Rule: These are related but distinct images (light-armor vs. God’s-armor); do not substitute one Burmese phrase for the other. Romans 13:12’s rendering (if established in a future Romans update) should use a light-associated construction, while Ephesians 6:11 retains ဘုရားသခင်၏ စစ်တန်ဆာအစုံ as already fixed in 08_core_glossary.md #93.

Rule 7 — Election/Predestination Vocabulary Consistency

  • Romans 8:29-30, 9:11-13 establish ခေါ်တော်မူသော (called), ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း (election) as Critical/High-risk fixed terms.
  • Ephesians 1:4-5, 1:11 intensify this vocabulary with προορίζω (predestined).
  • Rule: ကြိုတင်ခန့်ထားတော်မူသော (predestined, new to Ephesians) must be presented as an intensification of, not a replacement for, the Romans-established ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း — both terms should appear together in teaching notes wherever Ephesians 1:4-5 or 1:11 is treated, per 08_core_glossary.md #29.

Rule 8 — Wrath of God Vocabulary Consistency

  • Romans 1:18, 2:5, 9:22 establish the personal, righteous “wrath of God” as High-risk vocabulary requiring the same guardrail as “sin” (never impersonal karmic consequence).
  • Ephesians 2:3, 5:6 repeat this exact doctrinal claim (“children of wrath,” “wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience”).
  • Rule: The Burmese rendering of “wrath” (အမျက်တော်/ဒေါသအမျက်တော်) must be identical in both curricula, and both occurrences carry the Critical-tier caution already documented in 07_semantic_analysis.md.

Rule 9 — Body of Christ / Body Metaphor Consistency

  • Romans 12:4-5 introduces the “one body” metaphor for the church without extensive elaboration.
  • Ephesians 1:22-23, 4:4, 4:12, 4:16, 5:23, 5:30 develop the same metaphor at length with the added “head” (κεφαλή) component.
  • Rule: ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာ (body) must remain the fixed rendering across both curricula; the “head” vocabulary (ဦးခေါင်း/ခေါင်းဆောင်) is new to Ephesians and should be flagged in any future Romans-Ephesians combined teaching material as an elaboration, not a competing metaphor.

Rule 10 — “Walk” Motif Consistency

  • Romans 6:4, 8:4, 13:13 use περιπατέω (“walk”) for lived conduct.
  • Ephesians 2:2, 2:10, 4:1, 4:17, 5:2, 5:8, 5:15 use the same verb extensively as a structuring motif.
  • Rule: Whatever Burmese term Phase 2 settles on for περιπατέω (proposed: ကျင့်နေခြင်း/သွားလာကျင့်ကြံခြင်း, per 08_core_glossary.md #60) must be used identically in both curricula’s translation memory, since a learner moving from Romans to Ephesians should recognize the recurring “walk” theme as the same word.

PART 4 — Coverage Confirmation

Every chapter of Ephesians (1–6) has been reviewed for OT quotations, allusions, messianic references, and typology. No chapter was found without at least one significant Scripture cross-reference load-bearing for the curriculum’s nine doctrines. Chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 each contain at least one direct quotation of an OT text (Psalm 8:6; Genesis 2:24 / Exodus 20:12 / Zechariah 8:16 / Psalm 4:4; Psalm 68:18); Chapter 3 contains no direct quotation but substantial typological and covenantal allusion (Abrahamic promise fulfillment) essential to the Mystery of Christ Revealed doctrine and is noted here as reviewed in full.
