What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Doctrine Analysis

1 John — Doctrine Analysis (Hmong Language Package)

Part A — Doctrine Matrix (Full Book)

This matrix is the authoritative doctrine-risk source for Phase 2 generation together with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json, which it must never contradict. All eight assigned doctrines are Critical or High risk; there is no Medium/Low-risk doctrine in this Language Package, mirroring the Romans baseline pattern.

#DoctrineSupporting Passages (1 John)Risk LevelTranslation Risk DescriptionReview Routing
1God is Light and God is Love1:5; 1:6-7; 2:9-11; 4:8; 4:16CriticalTwin essence-predications (“Vajtswv yog qhov kaj”; “Vajtswv yog kev hlub”) demand the true-identity copula yog, never the comparative zoo li; default oral Hmong speech patterns reach for comparison when describing a deity’s qualities, which would silently reduce John’s ontological claims to mere description. Darkness (qhov tsaus ntuj) also carries pre-existing folk-cosmological associations with heightened spirit danger, which must be redirected toward moral/holiness categories rather than left as generic fear.Human theologian
2Fellowship with God and One Another1:3; 1:6-7; 2:24; 2:27-28; 3:24; 4:12-13; 4:15-16HighThe abiding verb (μένω, “nyob ruaj nrees hauv”) must always carry the “ruaj nrees” (steadfast) qualifier to avoid sounding like a temporary spirit-mediumship indwelling (dab entering/leaving a txiv neeb in trance). Koinōnia (“kev sib koom”) maps onto strong existing Hmong communal-sharing custom, risking a flattened horizontal-only reading unless John’s vertical-then-horizontal order is explicitly taught.Human theologian
3Confession and Forgiveness of Sin1:7; 1:9-10; 2:1-2; 2:12; 4:10CriticalPropitiation (“qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum,” inherited Critical TM term) collides with shamanic sacrificial appeasement; ongoing cleansing language (“ntxuav kom huv”) and Christ’s Advocacy (“tus sawv cev thov Vajtswv pab”) both reuse ritual-purification and ritual-intermediary imagery with direct functional analogues in the txiv neeb’s negotiating role — a collision not present in the Romans baseline and requiring book-specific disambiguating teaching.Human theologian
4Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth2:9-11; 3:1-3; 3:10; 3:11-18; 3:23; 4:7-8; 4:11-12; 4:19-21; 5:1-2Critical”Born of God” / “children of God” (yug los ntawm Vajtswv / cov me nyuam ntawm Vajtswv) risks assimilation into the Hmong multi-soul/reincarnation framework (plural ntsuj plig, hu plig soul-retrieval, cyclical embodiment) rather than being understood as a single, permanent, non-repeatable re-creation whose necessary fruit is observable love for fellow believers. This is a genuinely new Critical collision absent from the Romans baseline (which addressed only the lower-risk legal-adoption metaphor).Human theologian
5The Incarnation and Antichrist1:1-3; 2:18-23; 4:1-3; 4:9-10; 4:14-15; 5:1; 5:5-6Critical”Christ come in the flesh” (los ua neeg thiab muaj lub cev nqaij tawv tiag tiag) collides with spirit-mediumship, in which a spirit temporarily “comes upon” a host and later departs; must be taught as a permanent, unique, ontological union from conception, not a temporary visitation. The fourfold sensory-verification chain (1:1-3) exists precisely to block this docetic/mediumship-adjacent misreading and must never be abbreviated. Antichrist vocabulary must denote specific doctrinal denial of the incarnation, not a generic “evil spirit” within the broader dab category.Human theologian
6Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life2:3-6; 2:28; 3:19-21; 4:17-18; 5:11-13; 5:14-15; 5:18-20HighThe epistle’s stated purpose (5:13) depends on settled, Scripture-grounded knowledge (οἶδα), which risks being heard through the competing Hmong hmoov (impersonal fate/fortune, omen-reading) framework — the same collision class already Critical for election/foreknowledge in the Romans baseline, recurring here in assurance-of-salvation form. Parrēsia (“kev txaus siab tsis ntshai”) must retain its courtroom/eschatological sense, not collapse into casual ease.Human theologian
7Overcoming the World2:13-17; 3:8; 4:4; 5:4-5; 5:19HighThe devil (Ntxwg Nyoog) must be taught as a single, personal, already-defeated enemy under Christ’s authority — not one spirit among the broader negotiable dab category managed through ritual specialists. Believers must not seek protective ritual technique (charms, avoidance, appeasement) in place of resting in Christ’s finished victory, appropriated through simple faith (5:4b). The threefold worldly-desire catalogue (2:16) reuses flagged flesh vocabulary and must retain the moral-sense periphrasis, distinct from the Incarnation doctrine’s neutral physical sense.Human theologian
8Testing the Spirits4:1-6Critical”Test the spirits” collides directly and unavoidably with the txiv neeb’s defining ritual function of discerning/communicating with spirits via trance and divination. Must be taught as a purely doctrinal-propositional test (confession of Christ come in the flesh), not experiential/sensory shamanic confirmation. The “Vaj” prefix rule must apply rigidly: Spirit of truth always Vaj-prefixed; spirit of error never Vaj-prefixed and never confused with the anthropological ntsuj plig.Human theologian

Escalation trigger (consistent with Romans baseline pattern): all eight doctrines above require mandatory human theologian review before publication; there is no automated-review or native-speaker-only bypass for any doctrine in this Language Package. Doctrines 1, 3, 4, 5, 8 are Critical tier; doctrines 2, 6, 7 are High tier — both tiers route identically to human theologian review per assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json’s routing rule.

Part B — Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Coverage Log (Full-Book Mandate)

Per the full-book-coverage mandate, every chapter of 1 John is logged below with the doctrines it touches. No chapter is silently skipped; the epistle’s short length and doctrinal density mean every chapter is load-bearing for at least one assigned doctrine — there is no “reviewed, no new content” chapter in this book, but each is explicitly confirmed reviewed regardless.

ChapterDoctrines TouchedKey PassagesCoverage Note
1#1 (God is Light), #2 (Fellowship), #3 (Confession/Forgiveness), #5 (Incarnation, opening testimony)1:1-3, 1:5, 1:6-7, 1:9-10Reviewed in full. Establishes the eyewitness anti-docetic testimony (B2) foundational to doctrine #5, the Light/Darkness identity-statement grammar foundational to doctrine #1, the vertical-horizontal fellowship pattern foundational to doctrine #2, and the confession/cleansing/forgiveness vocabulary foundational to doctrine #3. No verse in ch.1 is doctrinally inert.
2#1 (Light/Darkness ethical outworking), #3 (Advocate), #4 (commandment to love, hatred of brother), #5 (Antichrist, denial of the Son), #6 (confidence/assurance introduced), #7 (worldly desire catalogue, evil one defeated)2:1-2, 2:9-11, 2:12, 2:13-17, 2:18-23, 2:24, 2:27-28Reviewed in full. The chapter is doctrinally dense: it introduces the Advocate/propitiation pairing (#3), the new/old commandment and brother-love/hatred contrast (#4), the antichrist test (#5), the first assurance/confidence language (#6), and the full worldly-desire triad plus the evil one’s defeat (#7).
3#4 (born of God / children of God, central chapter), #5 (typological contrast — children of God vs. children of the devil overlaps into #7’s devil-vocabulary), #6 (heart-condemnation vs. confidence before God), #7 (Cain as a type of the devil’s works being destroyed)3:1-3, 3:8, 3:10, 3:11-18, 3:19-21, 3:23-24Reviewed in full. This is the doctrinal center of gravity for doctrine #4 (seed of God, passed from death to life, laid-down-life ethical model) and contributes the heart-condemnation assurance material for doctrine #6.
4#8 (Testing the Spirits, vv.1-6, entire doctrine’s textual base), #5 (incarnational confession test, vv.2-3, 9-10, 14-15), #1 (God-is-Love identity statement, v.8, and its full unfolding through v.16), #2 (abiding/mutual indwelling, vv.12-13, 15-16), #6 (confidence at judgment, vv.17-18), #4 (love command restated, vv.7, 11-12, 19-21)4:1-6, 4:7-21Reviewed in full, including the core passage (4:7-21). This chapter is the convergence point of nearly every assigned doctrine: it is the sole textual base for doctrine #8, contains the second Critical identity-statement (“God is love,” #1), the fullest abiding/fellowship language (#2), the incarnational test restated (#5), the assurance/confidence climax (#6), and the love-for-brethren logic driven to its conclusion (#4).
5#6 (epistle’s stated purpose — “that you may know,” 5:13, plus overcoming/faith-as-victory, sin unto/not unto death), #7 (overcoming the world through faith, vv.4-5, 19), #4 (loving God’s children, vv.1-2), #3 (closing idol warning, cross-referencing confession/forgiveness’s purity theme)5:1-5, 5:11-13, 5:14-15, 5:18-20, 5:21Reviewed in full. Functions as the epistle’s summary chapter: restates doctrine #7’s victory-through-faith claim, delivers doctrine #6’s thesis statement and sin-unto-death pastoral distinction, and closes with the idol warning that functions as a capstone exclusive-devotion statement touching doctrines #1, #3, and #8 by implication (no rival object of worship/spirit-allegiance).

Full-book coverage confirmation: All five chapters of 1 John have been reviewed against all eight assigned doctrines. Every chapter contributes load-bearing material to at least one Critical-tier doctrine; no chapter is doctrinally “thin,” and none has been silently omitted from either this matrix or the underlying assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json baseline.
