Welcome to the Library

What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Cross-Reference Analysis

Exodus — Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis (Hmong Language Package)

0. Purpose and Method

This document maps every Old Testament quotation/allusion embedded within Exodus itself (patriarchal promises, later legal/prophetic reuse), every place Exodus is later quoted or alluded to elsewhere in Scripture (especially the Pentateuch, Psalms, Prophets, and the New Testament), and — because this Hmong Language Package is built on the same pipeline and translation memory as the existing Romans curriculum — every point where Exodus supplies the Old Testament narrative or vocabulary that Paul directly quotes, echoes, or typologically depends on in Romans. Citation format in this analysis document follows normalizable English-style references (Book chapter:verse, e.g. Exodus 12:6, Romans 9:17, Genesis 15:6, Galatians 2:16) per the Phase 1 instruction; this is distinct from, and does not override, the destination-curriculum citation convention (Loos [chapter]:[verse] for Romans; an equivalent Exodus convention is proposed in §6 below) established in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §7 for actual Hmong-language curriculum output.

Governing rule reminder: every Hmong rendering cited below reuses, exactly and without variation, either (a) the Romans baseline TM entry where one exists, or (b) the Exodus-specific proposed rendering logged in analysis/08_core_glossary.md, pending TM-revision review. No new alternate glosses are introduced here.

1. Cross-Reference Matrix — Core Passage (Exodus 12:1-14)

Exodus PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT ConnectionNT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Exodus 12:1-2New calendar founded on redemptionMoses, Aaron, YHWHGenesis 1:14 (months/seasons established at creation, now re-founded around redemption)Low — comprehension-level only
Exodus 12:3-4Corporate, household-based provision of the substituteMoses, “all the congregation of Israel”Genesis 12:1-3 (Abrahamic household-based promise)Acts 16:31 (“you and your household will be saved” — household-solidarity pattern)Low — positive bridge via Hmong clan/household (xeem) structure
Exodus 12:5The unblemished substituteLeviticus 22:19-21 (sacrificial animals must be without blemish); Isaiah 53:9 (no deceit, typologically sinless Servant)1 Peter 1:19 — “like that of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ”; Hebrews 9:14 (Christ “without blemish”); 2 Corinthians 5:21 (sinless substitute)Critical — must not flatten “tsis muaj chaw phem” to mere physical health; typological chain to Christ’s sinlessness must be preserved for the Passover-and-Substitutionary-Atonement doctrine
Exodus 12:6The appointed time of the substitute’s deathMoses, “whole assembled congregation”John 19:14 (Jesus condemned “about the sixth hour,” Passover preparation day); 1 Corinthians 5:7 (“Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed”)Medium — timing-typology comprehension gap, no collision
Exodus 12:7Applied blood marks the household as coveredheads of householdsGenesis 4:10 (blood that speaks — contrast: Abel’s blood cries for justice, Passover blood secures mercy)Hebrews 9:22 (“without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins”); Hebrews 11:28 (Moses kept the Passover and sprinkling of blood by faith); 1 Peter 1:2 (“sprinkling with his blood”)Critical — see full collision-flag discussion in 07_semantic_analysis.md v.7; blood-on-doorframe imagery risks assimilation to Hmong apotropaic household-protection practice; must be taught as sign of an already-accomplished substitutionary death, never a repeatable ward
Exodus 12:8Roasted lamb with unleavened bread and bitter herbs1 Corinthians 5:6-8 — “let us celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven… but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” (Paul directly reapplies Passover unleavened-bread imagery to the Corinthian church’s ethical purity)Medium — same ncuav tsis xyaw keeb term must read identically whether describing the historical Exodus meal or Paul’s ethical application, to preserve the typological link across curricula
Exodus 12:9-10Wholeness and non-repeatability of the offeringJohn 19:36 (“not one of his bones will be broken” — quoting a Passover-lamb regulation, Exodus 12:46/Numbers 9:12, applied to Christ’s crucifixion)High — the “not one bone broken” regulation (12:46, outside the core 12:1-14 span but part of the same institution) is directly quoted as fulfilled in John 19:36; must be flagged for coordinated teaching even though it falls just after the anchor passage
Exodus 12:11Posture of urgent, faith-filled readiness; the rite named “Passover”Luke 12:35-40 (readiness imagery, “dressed for action… loins girded”); 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 (eschatological readiness)Critical — see Kevcai Hla Dhau handling in §2 below
Exodus 12:12YHWH’s personal judgment on Egypt’s gods; self-disclosure formulaYHWH, PharaohExodus 6:6-7 (“I am the LORD… I will redeem you”); Numbers 33:4 (“on their gods also the LORD executed judgments”)Romans 1:22-25 (idolatry exchanging the truth of God for images — the same theological category, applied universally); cf. 1 Corinthians 8:5-6 (“many gods… yet for us there is one God”)High — “tej dab mlom ntawm cov Iziv” reuses the Romans idol (dab mlom) Critical/High term; teach as YHWH’s decisive victory over rival spiritual claims, directly analogous to Hmong traditional religion’s spirit-pantheon
Exodus 12:13Blood as sign; the “passing over”Romans 3:25 (hilastērion — see §3 below, the central intertextual bridge of the whole curriculum)Critical — anchor teaching point; must be explicitly cross-taught with Romans 3:25
Exodus 12:14Perpetual memorial feastDeuteronomy 16:1-8 (Passover regulations reaffirmed); Leviticus 23:5 (fixed in the liturgical calendar)1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (the Lord’s Supper instituted at a Passover meal, “do this in remembrance of me” — direct structural and verbal echo of the “memorial” concept); Luke 22:14-20High — the memorial-feast pattern must be taught as the direct historical and liturgical ancestor of the Lord’s Supper, without collapsing the once-for-all Passover-lamb typology into a repeatable sacrifice

Exodus 1:15-21Fear of God over fear of the kingThe Hebrew midwives (Shiphrah, Puah)Hebrews 11:23 (Moses’ parents acted by faith, implicitly continuing this pattern)High — reuses hwm thiab ntshai Vajtswv; must distinguish reverent trust from dread of capricious spirits, per 07_semantic_analysis.md ch.1

Exodus 2:1-10Moses drawn out of the water; the deliverer’s nameMoses, Pharaoh’s daughtertypological anticipation of Matthew 2:13-15 (the infant deliverer preserved from a hostile king’s decree)Low — comprehension gap only

Exodus 3:14”I AM WHO I AM” — the covenant name’s meaning disclosedYHWH, MosesJohn 8:58 (“before Abraham was, I am” — Jesus directly appropriates the divine self-existence formula); John 8:24, 28; 13:19; 18:5-6 (repeated absolute “I am” sayings)Critical — the single most important messianic/Christological cross-reference in the book; must be coordinated with the new Kuv Yog Tus Kuv Yog term (08_core_glossary.md #34) and taught alongside John 8:58 as the direct claim to deity underlying Jewish charges of blasphemy (John 8:59)
Exodus 3:15The name YHWH as perpetual memorialRomans 9:5 (Paul’s doxology affirming Christ’s deity, “who is God over all”); ties to the Romans baseline’s permanent prohibition on divine-name substitution (no “Yehauvas”)Critical — see §5 rendering-consistency rule
Exodus 3:7-10God sees affliction, comes down to deliverGod, IsraelLuke 1:68 (“he has visited and redeemed his people” — Zechariah’s song, structurally an Exodus-pattern hymn)Low

Exodus 9:16”For this purpose I have raised you up, to show my power in you”YHWH, PharaohRomans 9:17Paul quotes this verse directly, verbatim, as the centerpiece of his argument for God’s sovereign purpose in electionCritical — the single most direct verbatim OT-in-Romans quotation sourced from Exodus; exact terminological alignment between the Exodus rendering of “raised up… show my power” and the Romans 9:17 Hmong rendering is doctrinally mandatory (see §3, §5)
Exodus 9:27Pharaoh’s partial, insincere confession: “I have sinned”PharaohRomans 2:4-5 (contrast: presumption on God’s patience versus genuine repentance)Low

Exodus 33:18-23”Show me your glory” — Moses sees God’s back, not his faceMoses, YHWHJohn 1:18 (“No one has ever seen God; the only God… has made him known”) — direct contrast/completion: what was withheld from Moses is disclosed in Christ; 2 Corinthians 3:7-18 (Paul’s extended midrash on this very chapter, contrasting the fading glory on Moses’ face with the surpassing, unveiled glory of the New Covenant)Critical — 2 Corinthians 3 is a sustained direct NT exposition of Exodus 33-34; essential coordinated teaching point for both Character-of-God and Moses-as-Mediator doctrines

Chapters 36-39 — Construction Fulfilled

No new cross-reference entries beyond those already logged for chapters 25-30 (Ark/mercy seat, altar, priestly garments, incense); these chapters narrate exact fulfillment of prior divine instruction. Reviewed and logged per full-book-coverage mandate — the recurring refrain “as the LORD commanded Moses” (Exodus 39:1, 5, 7, 21, 26, 29, 31, 32, 42-43) is itself cross-referenced above under Chapter 39’s glossary entry (08_core_glossary.md #— obedience-of-faith pattern) and typologically anticipates Hebrews 8:5’s citation of Exodus 25:40 (“see that you make everything according to the pattern”), directly quoted in Hebrews 8:5.

4. Direct Old Testament Quotations of Exodus Found in Romans (Complete List for Coordinated Rendering)

This is the single most operationally important table in this document: every place Paul directly quotes or unmistakably alludes to Exodus within the already-baselined Romans Hmong Language Package. The Hmong rendering of the underlying Hebrew concept in the Exodus curriculum and the Hmong rendering of Paul’s quotation in the Romans curriculum must be recognizably the same phrase, or a footnote must explicitly cross-reference the two, per the rendering-consistency rules in §5 below.

Romans CitationExodus SourceContent Quoted/EchoedConsistency Requirement
Romans 9:15Exodus 33:19”I will have mercy on whom I have mercy”Must use txoj kev khuv leej [TM-INHERITED, mercy] exactly as fixed in the Romans TM; do not substitute txiaj ntsim (grace)
Romans 9:17Exodus 9:16”For this very purpose I raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed throughout the earth”Must use Vajtswv hwjchim [TM-INHERITED #62] qualifier discipline in both the Exodus narrative rendering and the Romans quotation
Romans 9:18(summary of Exodus 4:21; 7:3; 9:12; 10:20, 27; 11:10; 14:8)“So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills”Must use lub siab tawv [TM-INHERITED #58, hardening] identically in both curricula
Romans 7:7Exodus 20:17”You shall not covet”The Exodus-curriculum rendering of ntshaw for this commandment must match whatever rendering is used when Romans 7:7 is quoted/footnoted in future curriculum content
Romans 13:9Exodus 20:13-15, 17”You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not covet”Same coordination requirement as above, across all four commandments cited
Romans 9:4-5Exodus 4:22 (firstborn sonship); Exodus 24 (covenant-giving)“theirs is… the covenants… the giving of the law”Coordinate tus thawj tub (firstborn) and the new kev cog lus (covenant) term with Romans 9:4’s list of Israel’s privileges
Romans 3:25Exodus 25:17 (LXX kapporethilastērion)“whom God put forward as a propitiation”Exact, mandatory reuse of qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum [TM-INHERITED #37] in both curricula — this is the load-bearing anchor link of the entire Exodus Language Package
Romans 9:1-3Exodus 32:32 (echoed, not directly quoted)Moses’ self-substitutionary intercessory offerFlag as a thematic/structural echo, not a verbatim quotation; teaching note should name Moses explicitly as Paul’s implicit model
Romans 1:23, 25Exodus 20:4-5; 32:1-6 (golden calf)Idolatry — exchanging the glory of God for imagesCoordinate dab mlom [TM-INHERITED #32] usage across both curricula

5. Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations (Exodus ↔ Romans)

  1. Rule of Identical TM Reuse. Wherever an Exodus passage is the direct Old Testament source of a Romans quotation (see §4 table), the Hmong rendering of the shared vocabulary in Exodus-curriculum content MUST use the exact Romans TM string, character-for-character, with no stylistic variation — this extends 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §2.2’s structural qualifier-enforcement rule across curricula, not merely within one book.
  2. Rule of Qualifier Portability. Any mandatory qualifier phrase established in the Romans baseline (e.g., hwjchimVajtswv hwjchim; ntsuj pligVaj Ntsuj Plig when divine) applies with full force to the Exodus curriculum wherever the same underlying term recurs — qualifiers are a property of the term, not of the book.
  3. Rule of New-Term Anchoring. New Exodus-specific terms that will later be quoted or echoed in Romans-adjacent NT curricula (e.g., a future Hebrews or 1 Corinthians curriculum quoting Exodus 20:17, 32:6, 33:19, or Hebrews 8:5/9:5) must be logged now with their proposed rendering explicitly flagged as “pending cross-curriculum confirmation,” per 08_core_glossary.md §D, so that a future curriculum does not independently coin a competing rendering for the same underlying Hebrew/Greek text.
  4. Rule of Distinct-but-Related Term Separation. Where Exodus supplies the historical, literal referent behind a Romans metaphorical or theological term (e.g., qhev/slavery: literal chattel bondage in Exodus 1, 21 vs. Paul’s voluntary devotional self-designation in Romans 1:1; kev txhiv/redemption: literal price-payment for a firstborn in Exodus 13 vs. Christ’s atoning redemption in Romans 3, 8), the identical Hmong string must still be used, but the accompanying teaching note must explicitly distinguish the literal-historical sense from the theological-metaphorical sense, consistent with the existing Romans TM note pattern (cf. TM entry for servant_slave_doulos).
  5. Rule of Divine-Name and Divine-Speech Consistency. Every instance of YHWH’s self-disclosure formula (“I am the LORD,” Exodus 6:2, 6, 7-8; 12:12; 20:2) must use Kuv Yog tus Tswv, reusing tus Tswv [TM-INHERITED #2] exactly; the permanent Romans-baseline prohibition on divine-name substitution (“Yehauvas”) applies without exception across this entire curriculum.
  6. Rule of Typological Flagging, Not Silent Merging. When an Exodus type and its NT antitype use the same fixed Hmong TM term (e.g., qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum for both the mercy seat and Christ’s propitiation; kev cawm dim for both the Red Sea deliverance and salvation in Christ), curriculum content must explicitly name the typological relationship in a teaching note rather than allowing the shared vocabulary to imply the two events are of equal historical/theological weight — the type points forward to, and is fulfilled/superseded by, the antitype, never the reverse.

6. Citation Convention for This Curriculum (Proposed, Pending Confirmation)

Consistent with 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §7’s Romans convention (Loos [chapter]:[verse]), the Exodus curriculum requires its own destination-language book-name and citation convention for actual Hmong curriculum output (distinct from the English-style normalizable citations used in this analysis document):

  • Proposed destination-language book name for Exodus: Khiavdim (established transliteration/gloss pattern already used in existing Hmong Bible tradition, literally suggestive of “going-out/fleeing to deliverance”); full first-reference title: Phau Ntawv Khiavdim (“The Book of the Exodus/Going-Out”). [TRANSLATOR REVIEW NEEDED: confirm against existing Vaj Lug Kub Npaiv Npaum (HWB) book-name convention before treating as permanent, per the same verification discipline applied to “Loos” in the Romans baseline.]
  • Chapter:verse format: Khiavdim [chapter]:[verse], e.g. Khiavdim 12:13, mirroring the Romans Loos [chapter]:[verse] pattern exactly.
  • Cross-book citations (e.g., citing Romans 9:17 within an Exodus lesson, or Exodus 12:13 within a Romans lesson) must use each book’s own established citation form side by side, e.g.: “Khiavdim 12:13 … raws li Loos 3:25 qhia tias…” — never inventing a third, unified citation style.

7. Full-Book Coverage Confirmation

Every chapter of Exodus (1-40) has been reviewed for cross-reference content above. Chapters contributing no new cross-reference entries beyond material already logged in adjacent chapters (Chapters 5, 8, 10, 36, 37, 38 explicitly) are noted as reviewed, not omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate: Chapters 5, 8, and 10 intensify the bondage/plague motifs already tabled under Chapters 1 and 7 without introducing new quotations or typology; Chapters 36-38 narrate exact construction-fulfillment of instructions already cross-referenced under Chapters 25-30.
