Semantic Analysis
Colossians — Phase 1 Semantic Analysis (Hmong Language Package)
§0. Governing Conventions
This document extends, and never contradicts, the baseline Hmong Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json, 12_ai_translation_requirements.md). Every term already fixed in the Romans TM (e.g. Vajtswv, tus Tswv, Yexus Khetos, Vaj Ntsuj Plig, txiaj ntsim, kev cawm dim, hwjchim + mandatory qualifier, Txoj Kevcai (ntawm Vajtswv/Mauxes), dab mlom, kev xaiv, kev cai raus dej, kev raug ua kom dawb huv, qhev, lub cev ntawm Khetos, lub Nceeg Vaj ntawm Vajtswv, etc.) is reused exactly, unmodified, in this analysis. Risk tiers, script (RPA), and register (formal/literary, Vajtswv Txoj Lus tradition) follow the baseline without exception.
Colossians introduces a distinct cluster of risk not centrally present in Romans: cosmic/spiritual-powers vocabulary (thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities, elemental spirits, angel-worship) that speaks directly into Hmong animistic cosmology — a spirit-ranked universe of ancestor spirits, nature spirits (dab ntuj, dab teb), and household/territorial spirits negotiated with via the shaman (txiv neeb). This is the single largest new risk surface this Language Package must manage, and it converges precisely on the core passage and the doctrine of Christ’s supremacy over creation.
PART A — CORE PASSAGE: Colossians 1:15-20 (Verse-by-Verse)
Colossians 1:15 — ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου, πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως
Term: εἰκών (image)
- Transliteration: eikōn
- Literal meaning: a visible likeness, copy, or manifestation of an underlying reality.
- Semantic range: physical image/statue; a person’s visible representation; (theologically) the exact, personal manifestation of an invisible reality.
- English variants: “image,” “likeness,” “representation.”
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the perfect, personal, visible manifestation of the invisible God — not a mere resemblance but the very presentation of God’s being (cf. Hebrews 1:3, John 1:18). Foundational to the doctrine of the Supremacy of Christ over Creation and to Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily.
- Destination-language rendering risk: Proposed rendering “tus duab” (image/likeness). High risk — twofold: (1) near-homophone collision with dab (“spirit/demon”), a single yowg-tone shift away; unclear oral reading could momentarily suggest “spirit of God” rather than “image of God,” requiring careful RPA orthography and read-aloud training; (2) semantic collision with dab mlom (“idol,” an already-fixed TM Critical term) — hearers must not conflate the living, personal Image of the true God with a manufactured cult-image. Mandatory teaching note: Christ as tus duab is the antithesis of dab mlom — a living Person perfectly revealing God, not a lifeless object standing in for an absent spirit.
Term: ἀόρατος (invisible)
- Transliteration: aoratos
- Literal meaning: not able to be seen.
- Semantic range: invisible, unseen; applied to God’s essential nature (1 Tim 1:17; also of the invisible spirit realm in 1:16 below).
- English variants: “invisible,” “unseen.”
- Contextual theological meaning: qualifies “God” — the God who cannot be seen is nonetheless made visible in Christ, the Image. Establishes the paradox resolved only in the Incarnation.
- Destination-language rendering risk: “tsis pom” (cannot be seen). Low risk — descriptive, stable, no competing referent.
Term: πρωτότοκος (firstborn)
- Transliteration: prōtotokos
- Literal meaning: first-born (of a family), by extension one holding the firstborn’s rights of primacy, inheritance, and rank.
- Semantic range: literal birth-order; honorific rank/priority/preeminence (the dominant OT background sense, e.g. Ps 89:27, where “firstborn” = supreme heir regardless of birth order).
- English variants: “firstborn,” “preeminent one,” “supreme heir.”
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ holds supreme rank and inheritance-right over all creation as its exalted Heir and Sovereign — NOT that he is the first entity God created. This is the verse most abused historically (Arianism; modern Jehovah’s Witness/Watchtower theology explicitly reads prōtotokos here as “the first created being,” making Christ a creature).
- Destination-language rendering risk: Critical. Proposed rendering “tus Thawj Tub” (the Firstborn/Preeminent Son), MANDATORY qualifying clause attached at every occurrence: ”— qhia txog nws txoj cai loj dua ntais thiab txoj cai qub txeeg qub teg, tsis yog tias nws yog thawj tus uas Vajtswv tsim los” (indicating his supreme rank and inheritance-right, not that he was the first being God created). This exact collision is documented in
05_translation_landscape.md§4 as a Watchtower/NWT-pattern sectarian drift risk inherited from the Romans baseline (Son-of-God diminished-sonship prohibition) and must be treated with equal severity here — arguably higher, since 1:15 is this book’s thesis-defining Christological verse.
Term: κτίσις (creation)
- Transliteration: ktisis
- Literal meaning: the act or product of creating.
- Semantic range: the created order in its totality (Romans TM sense, reused); here specifically “all creation” as the class over which Christ holds primacy.
- English variants: “creation,” “created order,” “everything created.”
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s supremacy is asserted over the entire created order, including — as v.16 will specify — the spirit realm.
- Destination-language rendering risk: Reuse Romans TM entry “tej uas raug tsim los” exactly. Low risk, no modification needed. “All creation” = tag nrho tej uas raug tsim los.
- Transliteration: ektisthē (aorist passive, “was created”)
- Literal meaning: to bring into being from nothing/from a prior state, by sovereign act.
- Semantic range: divine creative act (never used of ordinary human “making”).
- English variants: “created,” “was made.”
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ is explicitly the agent (“in him,” “through him”) and goal (“for him”) of all creation, including the spirit-hierarchy named next — placing him categorically outside and above the created order he originates, not as its highest member.
- Destination-language rendering risk: “raug tsim los” (was created). Low risk, stable, consistent with
tej uas raug tsim los.
Term: τὰ πάντα (all things)
- Transliteration: ta panta
- Literal meaning: “the all things,” a totalizing phrase.
- Semantic range: absolute universal totality — leaves no exception.
- English variants: “all things,” “everything.”
- Contextual theological meaning: the fourfold repetition of panta in 1:15-20 (vv.16 [x2], 17, 18, 20) is the passage’s rhetorical spine, asserting Christ’s absolute, exception-free supremacy. Any translation that softens this to “many things” or a partitive sense damages the doctrine.
- Destination-language rendering risk: “tag nrho tej yam” or “txhua yam”. Low-Medium risk — must be rendered with a genuinely totalizing Hmong quantifier at every occurrence in this passage, not a vaguer “many/most” term, to preserve the absoluteness Paul intends.
Term: θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι (thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities)
- Transliteration: thronoi, kyriotētes, archai, exousiai
- Literal meaning: seats-of-rule; lordships; first-ones/rulers; permission-holders/authorities — a fourfold merism for ranked classes of spiritual/angelic beings (echoed in Eph 1:21, 3:10, 6:12; also 2:10, 2:15 below).
- Semantic range: in Second Temple Jewish and early Christian cosmology, a taxonomy of angelic/spiritual powers, encompassing both good angels and hostile spiritual forces, organized in ranks analogous to royal courts.
- English variants: “thrones,” “dominions,” “principalities,” “powers,” “rulers,” “authorities.”
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul asserts that the entire ranked spirit-hierarchy — whatever its class — was created by, through, and for Christ, and is therefore subordinate to him, not a rival or co-equal cosmic force. This directly answers the Colossian heresy’s apparent overvaluing of intermediary spirit-powers.
- Destination-language rendering risk: Critical — the highest-density collision point in this Language Package. Hmong traditional cosmology maps the universe as inhabited by a ranked multitude of spirits — ancestor spirits, household spirits, territorial/nature spirits (dab ntuj, dab teb), each negotiated with through ritual offering and the txiv neeb (shaman). If this fourfold merism is heard merely as “the various spirits,” Colossians risks being read as confirming the existence of a spirit-hierarchy worth fearing/appeasing rather than subordinating it entirely to Christ. Proposed rendering: “cov Zwm Txwv, cov Thawj Kav, cov Muaj Hwjchim, thiab cov Muaj Cai Kav saum ntuj ceeb tsheej” (thrones, rulers, powers, and authorities in the heavenly realm), with a MANDATORY appended clause at first occurrence and reinforced at every recurrence (2:10, 2:15): ”— txhua yam no puavleej yog Vajtswv tsim los thiab nyob hauv qab Khetos txoj kev kav, tsis muaj ib qho twg zoo sib npaug lossis siab dua Khetos” (all of these were created by God and are under Christ’s rule — none is Christ’s equal or superior). This qualifier is structurally mandatory, following the pattern already established for
hwjchimin the Romans baseline, and must never be dropped for space.
Colossians 1:17 — καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν πρὸ πάντων καὶ τὰ πάντα ἐν αὐτῷ συνέστηκεν
Term: πρὸ πάντων (before all things)
- Transliteration: pro pantōn
- Literal meaning: prior to/in front of all things — both temporal priority and rank priority.
- Semantic range: absolute pre-existence and supremacy in rank.
- English variants: “before all things,” “supreme over all.”
- Contextual theological meaning: reinforces Christ’s eternal pre-existence, closing the door that prōtotokos (v.15) might otherwise leave ajar to a first-created-being reading.
- Destination-language rendering risk: “nyob ua ntej tag nrho tej yam” (exists before all things). Medium risk — must be taught alongside the prōtotokos qualifier note as its doctrinal safeguard; the two verses function as a matched pair and should be cross-referenced in any teaching unit.
Term: συνέστηκεν (hold together / cohere)
- Transliteration: synestēken (perfect active of synistēmi)
- Literal meaning: to be caused to stand together, to cohere, to be sustained in unified existence.
- Semantic range: physical/cosmic sustaining coherence; the ongoing structural unity of a system.
- English variants: “hold together,” “cohere,” “are sustained/upheld.”
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ is not only creation’s origin but its ongoing sustaining cause — the universe’s coherence is continuously grounded in him (parallel to Heb 1:3’s “upholding all things”).
- Destination-language rendering risk: New term, no TM entry. Proposed rendering “tuav ua ke” (hold/sustain together as one). Medium risk — comprehension gap (an abstract metaphysical concept) rather than a collision; needs an explanatory teaching note that this is ongoing sustaining, not a one-time past act only.
Colossians 1:18 — καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν ἡ κεφαλὴ τοῦ σώματος, τῆς ἐκκλησίας· ὅς ἐστιν ἀρχή, πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν, ἵνα γένηται ἐν πᾶσιν αὐτὸς πρωτεύων
Term: κεφαλή (head)
- Transliteration: kephalē
- Literal meaning: the physical head of a body.
- Semantic range: literal anatomical head; metaphorically, the source, ruling authority, or preeminent member of a body/organization (also recurs at 2:10, 2:19; underlies the household-code headship implications of ch.3, though Colossians itself never states “husband is head of wife” as explicitly as Ephesians 5:23 does).
- English variants: “head,” “chief,” “ruling source.”
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the Church’s animating Head — its life-source and ruling authority — building on the already-fixed
body_of_christTM entry (lub cev ntawm Khetos, members =cov tswv cuab). - Destination-language rendering risk: “taubhau” (head, of
lub cev, the body). Low-Medium risk, straightforward extension of the existingbody_of_christmetaphor; must remain consistent whenever reused for the cosmic-powers sense (2:10) and the body-organic sense (2:19).
Term: ἐκκλησία (church)
- Transliteration: ekklēsia
- Literal meaning: an assembly called out.
- Semantic range: the local congregation; the universal body of believers (Colossians uses both senses, e.g. 1:18 universal, 4:15-16 local).
- English variants: “church,” “assembly,” “congregation.”
- Contextual theological meaning: here the universal Church, Christ’s Body, of which he is Head — central to Christ as Head of the Church doctrine.
- Destination-language rendering risk: reuse the established Hmong Christian term “pawg ntseeg” (congregation of believers), consistent with existing usage referenced throughout the Romans package (
pab pawg ntseeg). Low risk, stable.
Term: ἀρχή (beginning/first)
- Transliteration: archē
- Literal meaning: beginning, origin, first-principle; (elsewhere in this letter, plural, “rulers” — see 1:16, 2:10, 2:15, a distinct sense).
- Semantic range: temporal beginning; source/origin; rank of “first.”
- English variants: “beginning,” “origin,” “first.”
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the archē, the originating source, of the new resurrection-order, parallel to his being archē of the old creation-order (1:16-17).
- Destination-language rendering risk: “pib” or “tus pib” (the beginning/source). Low-Medium risk — must be kept contextually distinct from the plural cosmic-powers sense of the same root at 1:16/2:10/2:15 (rendered there as “cov Thawj Kav”), since English “rulers”/“beginning” both derive from archē but require different Hmong renderings depending on sense; flag for translator attentiveness at each occurrence.
Term: πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν (firstborn from the dead)
- Transliteration: prōtotokos ek tōn nekrōn
- Literal meaning: first-born out from among the dead ones.
- Semantic range: same rank/priority sense as 1:15, now applied to resurrection — Christ is the pioneer and supreme exemplar of resurrection life, guaranteeing believers’ future resurrection.
- English variants: “firstborn from the dead,” “first to rise,” “the first of the resurrection.”
- Contextual theological meaning: parallels 1:15’s firstborn-of-creation claim with a firstborn-of-the-new-creation claim; both must carry the same “supremacy of rank,” not “first created/first raised chronologically as one among equals” — though here the chronological sense (first to be raised to permanent resurrection life) is doctrinally correct and intended alongside the rank sense, unlike 1:15 where only the rank sense is correct. This distinction must be taught explicitly.
- Destination-language rendering risk: “tus Thawj Tub uas sawv hauv qhov tuag rov qab los” (the Firstborn/Preeminent One who rose from the dead), reusing the fixed
tus Thawj Tubterm. High risk — teaching note required to distinguish this correct chronological + rank sense from 1:15’s rank-only sense, so students do not wrongly import a “first-created” reading here or wrongly deny the chronological “first to rise” sense that IS intended in this verse.
Term: πρωτεύων (preeminent)
- Transliteration: prōteuōn
- Literal meaning: holding first place.
- Semantic range: preeminence, supremacy, first rank in every category.
- English variants: “preeminent,” “supreme,” “first in everything.”
- Contextual theological meaning: the purpose clause (“so that he might be preeminent in everything”) states the passage’s overarching thesis explicitly.
- Destination-language rendering risk: “muaj feem loj dua ntais rau txhua yam” (holds supreme rank/place over everything). Low-Medium risk, descriptive phrase, no collision, but should echo the same “supreme rank” vocabulary used for prōtotokos for stylistic/doctrinal consistency across the passage.
Colossians 1:19 — ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ εὐδόκησεν πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα κατοικῆσαι
Term: πλήρωμα (fullness)
- Transliteration: plērōma
- Literal meaning: that which fills; the state of being full/complete.
- Semantic range: completeness, totality; in Colossians’ background context, a term also used by nascent Gnostic-influenced teaching for the “totality” of divine emanations/powers spread across many intermediary beings.
- English variants: “fullness,” “completeness,” “totality.”
- Contextual theological meaning: recurs as a key polemical term (1:19, 2:9, 2:10) — against any teaching that distributes divine fullness among many intermediary spirit-powers, Paul insists the entire fullness dwells in Christ alone, and believers are filled through him alone (2:9-10), not through supplementary spirit-mediators.
- Destination-language rendering risk: Critical. Proposed rendering “qhov puv npo” (the fullness/completeness). The doctrinal danger for a Hmong audience is structurally identical to the historical Gnostic danger, but with a culturally native analogue: a worldview in which spiritual benefit/protection is distributed among many spirit-powers (ancestors, house-spirits, nature-spirits), each holding a portion that must be separately negotiated. Mandatory teaching note: Christ holds the entire, undivided fullness — nothing is missing that some other spirit-power must supply, and nothing may be “added” from another source without contradicting this fullness.
Term: κατοικέω (dwell)
- Transliteration: katoikēsai
- Literal meaning: to settle down, dwell permanently (distinct from paroikeō, “sojourn temporarily”).
- Semantic range: permanent, settled indwelling, not a temporary visitation.
- English variants: “dwell,” “reside permanently,” “make its home.”
- Contextual theological meaning: God’s fullness does not merely visit or temporarily inspire Christ (as many false teachings of spirit-possession or temporary divine empowerment might suggest); it permanently resides in him.
- Destination-language rendering risk: “nyob ruaj khov” (dwell permanently/settled). High risk — must be explicitly distinguished from the verb used for temporary spirit-possession phenomena in traditional practice (dab nkag, a spirit “entering” a medium temporarily); the baseline Romans package already forbids the possession-verb nkag for “sin entered the world” (5:12) for the same reason, and that prohibition extends here with equal force. Use only nyob (“to dwell/reside”) vocabulary, never nkag.
Colossians 1:20 — καὶ διʼ αὐτοῦ ἀποκαταλλάξαι τὰ πάντα εἰς αὐτόν, εἰρηνοποιήσας διὰ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ σταυροῦ αὐτοῦ, εἴτε τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἴτε τὰ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
Term: ἀποκαταλλάξαι (to reconcile)
- Transliteration: apokatallaxai (intensified form of katallassō, the Romans-TM verb underlying
reconciliation) - Literal meaning: to bring back into a completely changed, restored relationship; the apo- prefix intensifies the already-strong katallagē root.
- Semantic range: full, cosmic-scale restoration to right relationship.
- English variants: “reconcile,” “restore to full peace.”
- Contextual theological meaning: extends the Romans-baseline
reconciliationdoctrine to cosmic scope — “all things” in heaven and on earth, not only individual believers. This must be carefully taught as the pacification/right-ordering of the entire created order under Christ’s lordship (including the subjugation of hostile spirit-powers named in 2:15), not as a claim that every individual being is savingly reconciled (a misreading that would produce universalism). - Destination-language rendering risk: reuse Romans TM entry “kev sib haum xeeb (nrog Vajtswv)” exactly, extended with the explicit qualifier “rau tag nrho tej uas raug tsim los, saum ntuj thiab hauv ntiajteb” (for all creation, in heaven and on earth). High risk — flagged per the Romans-baseline escalation rule for a fixed term reused in a novel doctrinal context (cosmic scope); requires native-speaker-plus-theologian review to ensure the cosmic-pacification sense is not flattened into a universalist-salvation misreading.
Term: εἰρηνοποιήσας (having made peace)
- Transliteration: eirēnopoiēsas
- Literal meaning: having made/produced peace.
- Semantic range: peace-making as an accomplished act, specifically through bloodshed (the cross).
- English variants: “having made peace,” “peace-making.”
- Contextual theological meaning: the means of the cosmic reconciliation is specified as the cross’s blood — grounding the entire supremacy-and-reconciliation claim in Christ’s atoning death, tying doctrine 3 (Reconciliation through the Cross) directly to doctrine 1 (Supremacy over Creation).
- Destination-language rendering risk: reuse Romans TM “kev thaj yeeb” (peace) as the noun base, verb form “ua kom muaj kev thaj yeeb”. Low-Medium risk, stable extension.
Term: αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ (blood of the cross)
- Transliteration: haima tou staurou
- Literal meaning: the blood [shed] of the cross.
- Semantic range: metonym for Christ’s sacrificial, atoning death.
- English variants: “blood of the cross,” “his blood shed on the cross.”
- Contextual theological meaning: anchors the cosmic reconciliation concretely and exclusively in Christ’s historical, bodily death — must be taught alongside the Romans-baseline
propitiation_atoning_sacrifice(qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum) entry as the same once-for-all, sufficient, unrepeatable atoning event, not a new or different sacrificial transaction. - Destination-language rendering risk: “cov ntshav ntawm tus Ntoo Khaub Lig” (the blood of the Cross), using the established Hmong Christian term “tus Ntoo Khaub Lig” for the cross. Low-Medium risk — standard, stable term; must be cross-referenced with the Critical
propitiation_atoning_sacrificeTM entry to prevent any drift toward a repeatable-sacrifice reading distinct from that entry’s mandatory once-for-all qualifier.
PART B — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER FULL-BOOK COVERAGE
Chapter 1 (outside the core passage: 1:1-14, 1:21-29)
- ἀπόστολος (apostle, 1:1) — reuse Romans TM
tus Tub Txib. Medium risk (inherited). - ἅγιοι (saints/holy ones, 1:2, 1:4, 1:12, 1:26) — NEW entry, no dedicated Romans TM noun form (Romans TM has the process
sanctification=kev raug ua kom dawb huvbut not the noun “saints”). Proposed rendering: “cov ntseeg dawb huv” (holy believers). High risk — inherits thedawb huvritual-purity collision documented in the Romans baseline sanctification entry; must be taught as a status conferred by union with Christ, not an achieved ritual-purity state. - πίστις, ἀγάπη, ἐλπίς (faith, love, hope, 1:4-5) — reuse Romans TM exactly (
kev ntseeg,kev hlub,kev cia siab). Low-Medium (inherited). - εὐαγγέλιον (gospel, 1:5, 1:23) — reuse Romans TM
Txoj Moo Zoo. Low (inherited). - χάρις (grace, 1:2, 1:6) — reuse Romans TM
txiaj ntsim. Critical (inherited);koob hmoovremains permanently forbidden. - ἐπίγνωσις vs γνῶσις (full knowledge vs. knowledge, 1:9-10; also 2:2-3) — NEW distinction. Proposed rendering: “kev paub tseeb” (full/true knowledge) vs. bare “kev paub” (knowledge). Medium risk — the Colossian false teachers claimed a superior, esoteric gnōsis; Paul counters with epignōsis grounded in Christ alone. Relevant to the Warning Against False Teaching doctrine; needs a teaching note distinguishing Christian epignōsis from any claim to secret/special spiritual knowledge (a live risk given shamanic claims to hidden spiritual insight).
- δύναμις (power, 1:11, 1:29) — reuse Romans TM
hwjchim, mandatory qualifierVajtswv hwjchim. High risk (inherited). - κλῆρος / κληρονομία (inheritance/portion, 1:12) — reuse Romans TM
heirconcept (tus qub txeeg qub teg). Low (inherited, positive clan-inheritance bridge). - ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους (dominion/authority of darkness, 1:13) — NEW compound. Proposed rendering: “lub hwjchim ntawm qhov tsaus ntuj” (the power/dominion of darkness). Critical — this is the first explicit “dark power” reference in the letter and sits immediately before the cosmic-powers passage (1:16); must be taught as describing a real but already-defeated, subordinate realm from which believers have been rescued/transferred (not a currently-contesting equal force requiring ongoing shamanic negotiation).
- βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ (kingdom of the Son, 1:13) — reuse Romans TM
kingdom_of_godpattern, rendered “lub Nceeg Vaj ntawm nws Leej Tub”. Low (inherited pattern). - ἀπολύτρωσις, ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν (redemption, forgiveness of sins, 1:14) — reuse Romans TM
kev txhivfor redemption.ἄφεσις(forgiveness) is NEW; proposed rendering “kev zam txim” (forgiveness/pardon of sin). Medium risk, comprehension-level, no collision — pairs naturally with the existing debt-redemption cultural bridge. - ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι, ἐχθροί (alienated, enemies, 1:21) — NEW. Proposed rendering: “tau ncaim deb ntawm Vajtswv” (estranged/separated far from God) and “Vajtswv cov yeeb ncuab” (God’s enemies). Medium risk — reinforces Original-Sin-adjacent separation-from-God teaching; low collision, since “enemy” and “estrangement” are culturally intelligible concepts.
- ἄμωμος, ἀνέγκλητος (blameless, without reproach, 1:22) — NEW. Proposed: “tsis muaj chaw thuam” (without fault to accuse). Low-Medium, descriptive.
- τεθεμελιωμένοι, ἑδραῖοι, ἀμετακίνητοι (founded, steadfast, immovable, 1:23) — NEW, descriptive stability metaphors. Proposed: “muaj kaus taw ruaj khov, sawv ruaj, tsis txav”. Low risk.
- ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ (filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions, 1:24) — NEW, Critical. Proposed rendering: “ua kom tiav tej kev txom nyem uas tseem tshuav ntawm Yexus Khetos tej kev txom nyem”. This must NEVER be taught as implying Christ’s atonement was insufficient — that would directly contradict the Critical
propitiation_atoning_sacrificeTM entry’s mandatory “once-for-all, sufficient” qualifier. Mandatory teaching note: Paul refers to his own ongoing apostolic suffering in gospel mission-labor, sharing in the pattern/cost of proclaiming Christ, not completing Christ’s finished atoning work. - οἰκονομία (stewardship, 1:25) — NEW. Proposed: “haujlwm saib xyuas (ntawm Vajtswv)”. Low-Medium, comprehension-level.
- μυστήριον (mystery, 1:26-27) — reuse Romans TM
zaj lus zais cia. Medium risk, novel doctrinal context flag: in Romans, the mystery concerned Israel’s future; in Colossians, the mystery is Christ himself, and specifically Christ indwelling the Gentiles (1:27). Per the Romans-baseline escalation rule, a TM term reused in a new doctrinal context must be logged — done here. - Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν (Christ in you, 1:27) — NEW fixed phrase, the structural inverse of the Romans-baseline
in_christ_union_formula(nyob hauv Khetos). Proposed: “Khetos nyob hauv nej”. High risk — must never use the possession-verb nkag (forbidden per Romans baseline §3.1 for the same phonetic-domain reason); must be taught as mutual indwelling (believers in Christ AND Christ in believers), reinforcing rather than confusing the existingnyob hauv Khetosformula. - τέλειος (perfect/mature, 1:28) — NEW. Proposed: “laus tim khawv txog Vajtswv” no — simpler: “loj hlob tag nrho hauv Khetos” (fully mature in Christ). Low-Medium, comprehension-level.
Chapter 2
- ἀγῶνα, συμβιβασθέντες (struggle; knit together, 2:1-2) — NEW, descriptive relational metaphors. Proposed: “kev nrhiav kev sib zwm ua ke”. Low risk.
- θησαυροὶ τῆς σοφίας καὶ γνώσεως (treasures of wisdom and knowledge, 2:3) — extends the epignōsis/gnōsis distinction above; Christ alone is where these treasures are hidden. Medium risk, ties directly to the False-Teaching-and-Syncretism doctrine — the claim that hidden spiritual treasure/insight exists ONLY in Christ, not in any parallel spiritual system.
- φιλοσοφία καὶ κενῆς ἀπάτης (philosophy and empty deceit, 2:8) — NEW. Proposed: “tej kev xav thiab kev dag ntxias uas tsis muaj qab hau”. Medium-High risk — must be carefully scoped to the specific false teaching Paul confronts, not generalized into a blanket condemnation of all non-Christian thought, while still preserving the warning against syncretistic accretion.
- παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων (tradition of men, 2:8), contrasted with κατὰ Χριστόν (according to Christ) — NEW. Proposed rendering: “kevcai neeg tsim los” (human-made tradition/custom) vs. “raws li Khetos” (according to Christ). Critical risk —
kevcaishares its root withkev cai dab qhuas(“religion,” ancestral spirit-worship customs) already flagged in the Romans-baseline Law entry; here the collision is sharper still, since Paul’s target is precisely the danger of ancestral/customary religious practice being smuggled into Christian teaching as a supposedly harmless “addition.” This is the central lexical-doctrinal risk for the Warning Against False Teaching and Syncretism doctrine in a Hmong context, where existing ancestral kevcai (funeral rites, spirit-offering customs) are a live pressure toward exactly this kind of syncretism. - στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου (elemental spirits/elements of the world, 2:8, 2:20) — NEW. Proposed rendering: “tej hauv paus qub ntawm lub ntiajteb” (the elemental/foundational things of the world). Critical risk — the single most dangerous comprehension-collision point in the letter: if rendered or heard as referring to literal nature-spirits, this verse could be read as validating the reality and relevance of the very nature-spirits (dab ntuj, dab teb) Hmong traditional religion venerates, rather than declaring believers free from their claimed authority. Alternatives using any dab-root vocabulary are FORBIDDEN. Mandatory teaching note distinguishing this from legitimate acknowledgment of a spirit realm (1:16 already affirms spirit-beings exist and were created by Christ) versus the false claim that submission to ascetic/ritual regulations connected to such powers is spiritually necessary.
- πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς (fullness of Deity dwells bodily, 2:9) — NEW, Critical, this book’s central Christological affirmation. θεότης (deity/Godhead) proposed rendering: “Vajtswv lub Yam Ntxwv tag nrho” (the entire nature/essence of God). Combined rendering: “tag nrho Vajtswv lub Yam Ntxwv nyob puv npo hauv nws lub cev tiag tiag” (the entirety of God’s nature dwells fully in his real/actual body). Mandatory teaching note must guard against two opposite errors simultaneously: (1) docetism — denying Christ has a genuinely physical body (σωματικῶς, “bodily,” must be preserved, not spiritualized away); (2) subordinationism/Arianism — denying that the entire, undivided divine nature (not a portion or emanation) is present in Christ. This is the doctrinal anchor for Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily and must receive the highest level of theologian review.
- κεφαλὴ πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας (head of all rule and authority, 2:10) — reuses the Critical cosmic-powers term established at 1:16; same mandatory qualifier applies.
- περιτομή (circumcision, 2:11) — reuse Romans TM
kev txiav (raws li Txoj Kevcai Mauxes). Medium (inherited), here reapplied metaphorically to Christ’s “circumcision” achieved in believers, requiring a teaching note distinguishing the literal Mosaic rite from its spiritual fulfillment. - βάπτισμα, συνταφέντες, συνηγέρθητε (baptism, buried with, raised with, 2:12) — reuse Romans TM
kev cai raus dejfor baptism. High risk (inherited). The “buried with / raised with” language directly extends the Romans-baseline Union with Christ doctrine (died/raised with Christ, previously anchored mainly in Romans 6) — proposed extension rendering “tau nrog Khetos raug faus thiab tau nrog Khetos sawv hauv qhov tuag rov qab los”. Must reuse the same once-for-all, non-repeatable teaching frame already mandated for baptism in the Romans baseline. - χειρόγραφον, δόγματα (handwritten debt-record, decrees, 2:14) — NEW. Proposed rendering: “daim ntawv qhia nqi kev txhaum uas cuam tshuam rau peb” (the document recording the debt of sin that stood against us), with the verb “raug rho tawm thiab txawb rau saum tus Ntoo Khaub Lig” (was erased and nailed to the Cross). Medium-High risk, good bridge via the existing Hmong debt-culture concept already used for
apolytrōsis/redemption in the Romans baseline; must be anchored to the same cross-event as 1:20’s atonement language. - ἀπεκδυσάμενος τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας, θριαμβεύσας (disarmed/stripped and triumphed over rulers and authorities, 2:15) — NEW, Critical, extending the cosmic-powers term. Proposed rendering: “rho tawm lawv lub hwjchim thiab kov yeej cov Thawj Kav thiab cov Muaj Hwjchim saum ntuj tab meeg rau sawv daws pom” (stripped their power and triumphed over the rulers and authorities publicly, in view of everyone). Mandatory teaching note: this must be presented as Christ’s unique, total, once-for-all, public cosmic victory — categorically different from the provisional, negotiated, repeatable power-contests of shamanic spirit-warfare (txiv neeb ritual combat with hostile spirits). Any framing that suggests Christ merely won one round of an ongoing negotiable contest inverts the doctrine.
- ἑορτή, νεομηνία, σάββατα (feast, new moon, sabbaths, 2:16) — NEW, calendar/ritual observance terms. Proposed: transliterate/describe as “hnub caiv, hli tshiab, hnub Xanpatau”. Low-Medium, comprehension-level, no direct collision (though the broader point — ritual-calendar observance is not salvation-necessary — reinforces the syncretism warning).
- σκιά … σῶμα (shadow … substance, 2:17) — NEW philosophical contrast. Proposed: “duab qauv (tsis tseeb)” (shadow/outline, not-real) vs. “qhov tseeb tiag” (the real substance). Medium risk, comprehension gap only.
- θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων (worship of angels, 2:18) — NEW, Critical. Proposed rendering: “kev pehawm cov tim tswv saum ntuj” (worship of the heavenly messengers/angels), reusing the flagged
pehawmverb from the Romans baseline (which mandates the object always be stated — here the object is explicitly a FORBIDDEN one). Mandatory teaching note: this passage names and condemns a real practice of venerating angelic intermediaries — structurally identical to the danger of treating ancestor spirits or nature spirits as necessary intermediaries to God. This is a direct, explicit warning against exactly the kind of spirit-intermediary religion embedded in Hmong ancestor veneration and must be taught with full force, not softened. - ἐμβατεύων, εἰκῇ φυσιούμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ νοὸς τῆς σαρκός (taking a stand on visions, vainly puffed up by the fleshly mind, 2:18) — NEW. Proposed: “khav theeb tsis muaj qab hau raws li tej yog toog thiab tus kheej lub siab ntawm lub cev nqaij tawv”, reusing the Romans-baseline
flesh_moral_sinful_natureperiphrasis. Medium-High risk — visionary/ecstatic spiritual-authority claims parallel shamanic trance/vision claims to authority; needs explicit teaching contrast. - ταπεινοφροσύνη (humility — false sense, 2:18, 2:23) — same lexeme as the virtue at 3:12 but here describing a false, self-imposed humility tied to ascetic practice. Medium risk of conflation — translators/teachers must disambiguate by context, not by inventing a separate lexeme, since the term itself is not corrupted, only its practice here.
- ἐθελοθρησκία (self-made religion, 2:23) — NEW. Proposed rendering: “kev pehawm Vajtswv raws li tus kheej lub siab xav, tsis yog raws li Vajtswv qhia” (worship devised from one’s own thinking, not according to God’s revelation). High risk — while Paul’s target is a specific ascetic movement, the concept of self-devised religious practice parallels broader folk-religious innovation; must be taught narrowly (self-styled asceticism/regulations) to avoid it being weaponized as a blanket dismissal of all unfamiliar devotional practice.
- ἀφειδίᾳ σώματος (severity to the body, 2:23) — NEW, descriptive. Proposed: “kev tsim txom lub cev”. Low-Medium, comprehension-level.
Chapter 3
- συνηγέρθητε τῷ Χριστῷ (raised with Christ, 3:1) — extends Union-with-Christ language from 2:12; reuse “tau nrog Khetos sawv hauv qhov tuag rov qab los”. High risk (inherited pattern).
- τὰ ἄνω (things above, 3:1-2) — NEW, spatial-theological metaphor. Proposed: “tej uas nyob saum ntuj ceeb tsheej”. Low risk.
- κέκρυπται, ἐν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ θεῷ (hidden, in Christ in God, 3:3) — reuses and doubles the
in_christ_union_formula. Proposed: “tau muab zais nyob hauv Khetos, uas nyob hauv Vajtswv”. High risk (inherited pattern), doubled union-formula requiring careful, non-repetitive but faithful rendering. - φανερωθήσεται (will be revealed/manifested, 3:4) — NEW. Proposed: “yuav raug qhia tshwm los”. Low risk.
- Vice list (3:5, 3:8): πορνεία, ἀκαθαρσία, πάθος, ἐπιθυμία κακή, πλεονεξία, εἰδωλολατρία, ὀργή, θυμός, κακία, βλασφημία, αἰσχρολογία — mostly NEW descriptive terms except εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry), which reuses Romans TM
idolroot (dab mlom) as its base — “idolatry” proposed as “kev pehawm dab mlom”. High risk on this item specifically (inherited idol-collision risk); the rest of the vice list is Low-Medium, standard ethical vocabulary requiring no special collision handling. - ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ (wrath of God, 3:6) — reuse Romans TM
wrath_of_godexactly (kev npau taws ntawm Vajtswv). High risk (inherited). - ἀπόθεσθε … τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον / ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν νέον (put off the old self / put on the new, 3:8-10) — NEW, core to the Putting Off/Putting On doctrine. Proposed rendering: “muab tus neeg qub tso tseg” (put off/discard the old person) and “hnav tus neeg tshiab” (put on/clothe with the new person). Medium risk — the clothing metaphor (removing/putting on garments) transfers well culturally; primary risk is comprehension-level ensuring this is understood as decisive moral-spiritual transformation flowing from union with Christ, not a repeatable ritual costume-change or (a possible false parallel) any notion of soul-transfer/reincarnation-adjacent change, which must be explicitly excluded by teaching note.
- ἀνακαινούμενον (being renewed, 3:10) — reuse Romans TM
renewal_of_the_mind(hloov siab tshiab). Low-Medium (inherited). - εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος (image of the one who created, 3:10) — reuses the Critical
εἰκών/tus duabterm established at 1:15; same phonetic-collision caution applies (distinct from dab and fromdab mlom). - Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος (Greek/Jew, circumcised/uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free, 3:11) — reuses Romans TM entries for
jew(cov Yudas),greek(cov Kilis),circumcision, and themerism_greeks_barbarianspattern; Σκύθης (Scythian) is NEW, a proper ethnonym with no Hmong cultural equivalent — render as a transliterated proper name “cov Xikithias” with a footnote explaining it denotes a proverbially “uncivilized” people-group in Paul’s cultural context, paralleling “barbarian.” Low-Medium risk, comprehension-level only. - τὰ πάντα καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν Χριστός (Christ is all and in all, 3:11) — echoes the panta-density of 1:15-20; proposed “Khetos yog tag nrho, thiab nyob hauv txhua yam/txhua tus”. Medium risk — must be taught alongside the core passage’s totalizing supremacy language for doctrinal consistency, avoiding a pantheistic misreading (“Christ IS everything” in an undifferentiated sense) in favor of “Christ is supreme over, and indwells, all his people without ethnic/social distinction.”
- ἐκλεκτοί (God’s chosen ones, 3:12) — reuse Romans TM
election_chooseentry exactly: “cov uas Vajtswv xaiv (raws li nws lub siab nyiam)”. Critical risk (inherited) — thehmoov(fate) forbidden-substitution rule applies with full force; this is a direct reuse of the Romans-baseline Critical Election doctrine vocabulary in a new (ethical-exhortation) context, requiring the same volitional-clause structure, never a bare noun. - Virtue list (3:12-14): σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότης, ταπεινοφροσύνη, πραΰτης, μακροθυμία, ἀνεχόμενοι, χαριζόμενοι, ἀγάπη, σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος — mostly NEW descriptive ethical vocabulary (compassion, kindness, humility [true sense — contrast with 2:18/2:23’s false sense], meekness, patience, forbearance, forgiving one another, love as the “bond of perfection/completeness”). ἀγάπη (love) reuses Romans TM
loveexactly (kev hlub). The rest are Low-Medium, standard virtue vocabulary with no traditional-religion collision; χαριζόμενοι (forgiving) shares a root withχάρις/grace but functions here as an ordinary interpersonal-forgiveness verb, proposed “zam txim rau” — flag Medium to ensure this everyday forgiving verb is not confused with, or substituted for, the Criticaltxiaj ntsim(grace) TM entry. - εἰρήνη τοῦ Χριστοῦ, βραβεύω (peace of Christ, rule/govern, 3:15) — reuse Romans TM
peace(kev thaj yeeb);βραβεύωNEW, proposed “kav/txiav txim” (govern/decide/umpire). Low-Medium. - λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ; ψαλμοί, ὕμνοι, ᾠδαὶ πνευματικαί (word of Christ; psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, 3:16) — NEW. Proposed: “Khetos Txoj Lus”; “nkauj hu qhuas Vajtswv, nkauj qhuas, thiab nkauj Vaj Ntsuj Plig”, the last reusing the fixed
Vaj Ntsuj Pligcollocation with its mandatory Vaj-prefix. Low-Medium, comprehension-level, standard worship vocabulary. - Household Code (3:18–4:1): ὑποτάσσω (submit), ἀγαπᾶτε (love — husbands), ὑπακούετε (obey — children/slaves), μὴ ἐρεθίζετε (do not provoke — fathers), κύριος (lord/master — of slaves/masters) — NEW cluster, core to the Household Codes doctrine.
- ὑποτάσσω (submit, 3:18): proposed rendering “nyob hauv qab / mloog” (be under/submit to), MANDATORY qualifying clause “raws li tsim nyog rau hauv tus Tswv” (as is fitting in the Lord) attached at every occurrence, never presented as bare submission. High risk — Hmong clan/household culture already enforces strong wife-and-children submission norms tied to patrilineal clan hierarchy; the risk is bidirectional: (a) the term being heard as merely re-endorsing existing unqualified patriarchal absolutism (losing Paul’s Christ-centered, mutual-obligation qualifier, since 3:19 immediately commands husbands to love, and 3:21 commands fathers not to provoke/discourage children — the code is reciprocal, not one-directional dominance), or (b) the term being dismissed as “just village custom,” losing its grounding in gospel transformation. Mandatory teaching note must present the full reciprocal structure together, never isolating the wives’-submission clause from the husbands’-love clause.
- κύριος as human “master” (3:22-4:1): the SAME Greek word rendered
tus Tswvfor the divine Lord throughout the Romans TM is here applied to human household masters. High risk, NEW disambiguation requirement: proposed rendering for the human-master sense is “tus tswv tsev” (household master), explicitly NOT capitalized/marked as the divinetus Tswvtitle, with a mandatory contextual clause distinguishing “an earthly master, to be served as service ultimately rendered to the truetus Tswv[Christ]” (cf. 3:22-24, “you are serving the Lord Christ,” 3:24). This dual-referent risk did not arise as acutely in Romans and must be logged as a new disambiguation rule for this Language Package. - δοῦλος (slave, 3:22): reuse Romans TM
qhevexactly, with its existing mandatory catechetical note distinguishing voluntary honored bondservice-to-Christ from literal chattel slavery — here applied to the literal first-century household-slavery institution being addressed pastorally, requiring an ADDITIONAL teaching note distinguishing this historical, literal slave-master relationship from the metaphorical qhev-to-Christ relationship elsewhere in the TM, so the two senses (literal ancient institution vs. devotional metaphor) are not merged.
- ὀφθαλμοδουλία, ἀνθρωπάρεσκοι (eye-service, people-pleasers, 3:22) — NEW. Proposed: “kev ua haujlwm rau luag pom xwb” (working only for others to see) and “cov nyiam txaus siab rau tib neeg xwb”. Low-Medium, no collision.
- ἐκ ψυχῆς (from the soul/heart, 3:23) — NEW, reuses
ψυχήin its ordinary “inner self” sense (distinct from the anthropologicalntsuj plig/pneumaentry already fixed in the Romans TM — a different Greek word, no collision risk requiring flagging, but translators should note this is a third related-but-distinct anthropological term). Proposed: “tag siab tag ntsws” (with whole heart/inner being), an existing stable Hmong idiom. Low risk. - προσωπολημψία (partiality, 3:25) — reuse Romans TM
impartiality_of_godpattern (tsis saib ntsej muag), here in its negated form (“there is no partiality” — masters/slaves equally accountable). Low risk (inherited).
Chapter 4
- προσευχή, γρηγορέω, εὐχαριστία (prayer, watchfulness, thanksgiving, 4:2) — reuse Romans TM
thanksgiving(ua tsaug); “prayer” and “watchfulness” NEW, proposed “kev thov Vajtswv” and “ceev faj”. Low risk. - θύρα τοῦ λόγου, μυστήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ (door for the word, mystery of Christ, 4:3) — reuse Romans TM
mystery(zaj lus zais cia), here specifically “the mystery of Christ” — consistent with the 1:26-27 usage already logged. Low-Medium (inherited pattern). - περιπατεῖτε, τὸν καιρόν (walk, the opportune time, 4:5) — NEW. Proposed: “taug kev” (walk/conduct oneself) and “lub caij nyoog tsim nyog” (the fitting time/opportunity). Low risk, standard ethical-conduct idiom.
- λόγος ἐν χάριτι, ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος (speech with grace, seasoned with salt, 4:6) — NEW idiom, reuses
χάρις/txiaj ntsimin a general-graciousness (not soteriological) sense — flag Low-Medium to note this is the ordinary sense of gracious speech, not the Critical soteriologicaltxiaj ntsimentry, avoiding over-weighting an everyday usage with Critical-tier caution. - Proper names (4:7-17): Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus, etc. — transliterated proper names only, per the established convention (
Povlaujpattern in the Romans baseline). Low risk; log any new transliteration choices for future TM-revision consistency across a hypothetical Philemon/Ephesians companion package, since several names overlap (Onesimus, Tychicus, Aristarchus). - βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ (kingdom of God, 4:11) — reuse Romans TM
kingdom_of_godexactly (lub Nceeg Vaj ntawm Vajtswv). Low (inherited). - δοῦλος Χριστοῦ (servant of Christ, 4:12) — reuse Romans TM
doulos/qhevin its metaphorical devotional sense (distinct from the ch.3 literal household-slavery sense — see disambiguation note above). - πεπληρωμένοι (fully assured/filled, 4:12) — reuses the
πλήρωμαroot established as Critical at 1:19/2:9-10; here in an ordinary devotional sense (“fully assured/convinced in prayer”) rather than the Christological “fullness of Deity” sense. Flag Medium to prevent translators from over-applying the Critical Christological qualifier note to this pastoral, non-Christological occurrence. - διακονία (ministry, 4:17) — reuse Romans TM
deacon_servantpattern (tus pab tu pawg ntseeg), here as the abstract noun “ministry/service” rather than an office-title. Medium (inherited pattern).
Summary Note on Full-Book Coverage
All four chapters of Colossians have been reviewed. Chapter 1 contains the core passage plus substantial additional load-bearing vocabulary (grace, gospel, mystery, redemption, the “fullness” theme’s introduction). Chapters 2-3 carry the letter’s highest lexical-doctrinal risk density (elemental spirits, angel-worship, disarming of powers, fullness of Deity bodily, old/new self, household code). Chapter 4 is comparatively “thin” theologically (personal greetings, travel logistics, minor proper names) but is explicitly reviewed here rather than silently skipped: its load-bearing terms (mystery, kingdom of God, ministry, ordinary-sense grace/fullness) all reuse already-established renderings and introduce no new collision risk beyond the disambiguation notes logged above.
