Biblical Theme Map
Colossians — Biblical Theme Map (Hmong Language Package)
§1. Overview: A Christ-Centered Radial Structure
Colossians is architecturally unlike Romans. Romans unfolds a linear doctrinal argument (sin → justification → sanctification → election → ethics); Colossians radiates outward from a single fixed center — the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ, stated climactically in the core passage (Colossians 1:15-20) — and every subsequent theme in the letter is a direct application or defense of that center. This document maps that radial structure, then traces each of the letter’s eight assigned doctrines both inward (how it connects to the Christ-center and to the letter’s other doctrines) and outward (how it connects to the wider canon and to the Romans curriculum already produced for this Language Package).

HOUSEHOLD CODES (3:18-4:1)
[the concrete, domestic-level outworking of the
"new self" ethic under Christ's lordship]
Reading this map top-down mirrors the letter’s own movement: chapter 1 states the Christ-center; chapter 2 defends it against rival claims; chapters 3-4 apply it to personal and domestic ethics. No doctrine in this Language Package stands independently of the core passage — this is the single most important structural fact for curriculum sequencing and must govern lesson order (the core passage must be taught first, or at minimum established conceptually, before any of the seven other doctrines are introduced).
§2. The Eight Doctrines Mapped
Doctrine 1: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
- Core passages: Colossians 1:15-17; Colossians 1:16 (cosmic powers); Colossians 2:9-10.
- Position in the letter’s flow: The foundational doctrine; everything else in the letter presupposes it.
- OT roots: Genesis 1:1 (God alone as Creator); Psalm 89:27 (firstborn-rank); Proverbs 8:22-30 (Wisdom at creation); Psalm 148:2-5 (created angelic hierarchy, subordinate and praising).
- Intra-letter connections: Grounds the Warning against False Teaching (2:8-23) — if Christ is supreme over every cosmic power, no rival power or regulation can add anything; grounds the Household Codes (3:18-4:1) — human masters answer to Christ as their Master (4:1), placing even domestic hierarchy under Christ’s supremacy.
- Canonical/NT connections: John 1:1-3 (the Word as agent of creation); Hebrews 1:2-3 (the Son as heir and sustainer of all things); Revelation 5:13 (all creation ultimately worshiping Christ).
- Romans curriculum connection: Extends Romans’
power(hwjchim, mandatoryVajtswv hwjchimqualifier) andelection_choose/sovereignty doctrines into cosmic scope; Romans 8:38’s unglossed “rulers… powers” should be read as a compressed anticipation of this fuller Colossians doctrine (see09_cross_reference_analysis.md§3). - Hmong translation implication: This is the doctrine most exposed to the Hmong animistic spirit-hierarchy worldview; every occurrence of the cosmic-powers cluster (
cov Zwm Txwv, cov Thawj Kav, cov Muaj Hwjchim, thiab cov Muaj Cai Kav) must carry its mandatory subordination-to-Christ qualifier without exception.
Doctrine 2: Christ as Head of the Church
- Core passages: Colossians 1:18; Colossians 2:19.
- Position in the letter’s flow: A direct corollary of Doctrine 1 — the same Christ who is Head over the cosmic order (1:16) is specifically Head of his Body, the Church (1:18).
- OT roots: Genesis 2:23-24 (head/body-union background via marriage, later reapplied); no direct “head of assembly” OT title, making this a genuinely new Christological application.
- Intra-letter connections: Provides the organic-growth metaphor (2:19, “the whole body, nourished and knit together, grows”) underlying the corporate dimension of Putting On the New Self (3:1-17, esp. 3:15-16’s “one body” language) and the household code’s domestic-headship echo (3:18-4:1, though Colossians itself never states “husband is head of wife” as explicitly as Ephesians 5:23 does).
- Canonical/NT connections: Ephesians 1:22-23, 4:15-16, 5:23 (the fuller parallel treatment); 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 (body metaphor without the explicit “head” title).
- Romans curriculum connection: Direct extension of the already-fixed Romans TM
body_of_christ(lub cev ntawm Khetos, members =cov tswv cuab); Colossians adds the “Head” title, completing the metaphor Romans left partially developed. - Hmong translation implication:
taubhaumust remain lexically and contextually stable across all three occurrences (1:18, 2:10, 2:19) to preserve the single unified metaphor.
Doctrine 3: Reconciliation through the Cross
- Core passages: Colossians 1:20-22; Colossians 2:14; Colossians 1:24 (guard-rail).
- Position in the letter’s flow: The means by which Christ’s cosmic supremacy (Doctrine 1) becomes salvific good news rather than mere metaphysical assertion — supremacy without the cross would be raw power; the cross is what makes that power reconciling.
- OT roots: Isaiah 53:5, 53:10-11 (atoning suffering); Exodus 24:3-8 and Deuteronomy 27 (covenant documents/curses, background for the “debt-record” of 2:14); Leviticus 16 (Day of Atonement, background for the whole sacrificial-atonement domain, already anchored in the Romans-baseline
propitiation_atoning_sacrificeentry). - Intra-letter connections: Directly grounds Union with Christ (Doctrine 5) — believers are reconciled BY being united to Christ’s death (2:12-13); must never be confused with, or allowed to compete against, Colossians 1:24’s different category of Paul’s non-atoning apostolic suffering.
- Canonical/NT connections: 2 Corinthians 5:18-19; Ephesians 2:13-16; Romans 5:10-11 (the closest verbal Romans parallel).
- Romans curriculum connection: Extends the Romans-baseline
reconciliationentry (kev sib haum xeeb (nrog Vajtswv)) andpropitiation_atoning_sacrifice(qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum) to explicit cosmic scope (“all things, in heaven and on earth,” 1:20); must retain the Romans-baseline once-for-all, sufficient qualifier without weakening. - Hmong translation implication: Highest risk of a universalism misreading if the cosmic-scope qualifier is taught without the accompanying distinction between cosmic pacification/subordination (all things) and individual salvific reconciliation (believers only) — flagged Critical-adjacent in
09_cross_reference_analysis.md.
Doctrine 4: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
- Core passages: Colossians 2:4, 2:8, 2:16-23.
- Position in the letter’s flow: The letter’s central polemical hinge — the negative application of Doctrine 1 (Christ’s supremacy leaves no room for rival mediators) directed against a specific historical threat (an ascetic, angel-venerating, calendar-observant syncretistic teaching at Colossae).
- OT roots: Deuteronomy 4:15-19 (warning against corrupting worship with created/cosmic elements); Isaiah 58:3-7 (God’s rejection of self-devised religious severity); Judges 13:16 (an angel itself refusing worship).
- Intra-letter connections: Directly depends on Doctrines 1 and 8 (Christ’s supremacy and full deity leave no gap for supplementary powers or knowledge); directly motivates Doctrines 6-7 (if externally-imposed regulations cannot produce holiness, the alternative is the internal, Spirit-wrought putting-off/putting-on ethic of 3:1-17).
- Canonical/NT connections: Galatians 4:3, 4:9 (same “elemental things” vocabulary); 1 Timothy 4:1-5 (parallel warning against ascetic false teaching); Revelation 19:10, 22:8-9 (angel-worship explicitly forbidden).
- Romans curriculum connection: Extends the Romans-baseline
law_mosaic_divineentry’s core insight (the Law rightly understood never functioned as a syncretistic addition, cf. Romans 10:4) into a new register — here the danger is not the Mosaic Law itself but human tradition (kevcai neeg tsim los) smuggled in alongside it. - Hmong translation implication: The single highest-density syncretism-collision doctrine in this Language Package —
kevcai neeg tsim los,tej hauv paus qub ntawm lub ntiajteb, andkev pehawm cov tim tswv saum ntujtogether constitute the sharpest points of contact with, and warning against, Hmong ancestral kevcai and spirit-veneration practice in the entire curriculum.
Doctrine 5: Union with Christ (Died and Raised with Him)
- Core passages: Colossians 2:11-13; Colossians 2:20; Colossians 3:1-4.
- Position in the letter’s flow: The doctrine that transitions the letter from its Christological/polemical section (chs.1-2) into its ethical section (chs.3-4) — believers’ new-self ethic is possible only because they have already, decisively, died and been raised with Christ.
- OT roots: Genesis 17:9-14 (circumcision as a covenant-identity marker, background for 2:11’s spiritual circumcision); Psalm 110:1 (the seated, exalted position echoed in 3:1).
- Intra-letter connections: Grounds Doctrine 6 (Putting Off/On) directly — 3:1’s “if then you have been raised with Christ” is the logical premise for 3:5’s “put to death therefore…”; the whole ethical section is an outworking of this doctrine, not an independent moral code.
- Canonical/NT connections: Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 2:5-6; 1 Peter 3:21.
- Romans curriculum connection: The single closest cross-curriculum parallel in the entire letter — Colossians 2:12-13 is near word-for-word identical to Romans 6:3-4. Both must use the fixed Romans-baseline
kev cai raus dej(baptism) rendering and its once-for-all, non-repeatable teaching frame with zero divergence. - Hmong translation implication: Inherits the Romans-baseline
kevcai-root ritual-purification collision risk in full; thenyob hauv Khetos/Khetos nyob hauv nejformula pair (Colossians 1:27, 2:6, 3:3) must be taught as the doctrinal vocabulary uniting this section.
Doctrine 6: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
- Core passages: Colossians 3:5-10; Colossians 3:12-17.
- Position in the letter’s flow: The direct ethical outworking of Doctrine 5; the “therefore” of the whole letter.
- OT roots: Genesis 1:26-27 (the “image of the Creator” language of 3:10 directly echoes the creation account, forming a second explicit invocation of this text after 1:15); Ezekiel 36:26 (“a new heart… a new spirit” — background renewal-language pattern, though a different Hebrew/Greek term family).
- Intra-letter connections: The vice list (3:5-8) is the negative mirror of Doctrine 4’s warning (false, externally-imposed asceticism, 2:23, “is of no value against the flesh”) — Paul’s point is that real moral transformation flows from union with Christ (Doctrine 5), not regulation (Doctrine 4); the virtue list (3:12-17) directly anticipates the Household Codes (Doctrine 7) by naming compassion, humility, and forgiveness as the domestic ethic’s precondition.
- Canonical/NT connections: Ephesians 4:22-24 (near-verbatim parallel); Romans 6:6 (identical underlying Greek phrase for “old self,” see
09_cross_reference_analysis.md§3 for the recommended cross-book TM alignment); Galatians 5:19-24 (flesh/Spirit vice-and-virtue-list parallel). - Romans curriculum connection: Direct lexical link to Romans 6:6, currently unglossed in the Romans TM; recommend future alignment per the cross-reference analysis. Also parallels Romans 12:1-2’s
renewal_of_the_mind(hloov siab tshiab), reused here foranakainoumenon(3:10). - Hmong translation implication: The clothing metaphor (
tus neeg qubremoved, tus neeg tshiabput on) transfers well culturally but must be explicitly taught as decisive, once-for-all moral-spiritual transformation flowing from union with Christ — never as a repeatable ritual costume-change, and never confused with any reincarnation-adjacent notion of a soul or self being replaced/transferred, which must be explicitly excluded.
Doctrine 7: Household Codes
- Core passages: Colossians 3:18-4:1.
- Position in the letter’s flow: The most concrete, socially-embedded application of the whole letter’s Christ-centered ethic — the “new self” (Doctrine 6) is tested precisely in the ordinary, hierarchical relationships of the ancient household.
- OT roots: Exodus 20:12 (honor father and mother); Genesis 2:24 (marriage as one-flesh union); Job 31:13-15 (impartiality between master and servant before their shared Maker).
- Intra-letter connections: Directly dependent on Doctrine 1 (masters have “a Master in heaven,” 4:1, subordinating even the highest domestic authority to Christ’s supremacy) and Doctrine 6 (the reciprocal, other-regarding love/non-provocation/justice commands are direct applications of the “new self” virtues just listed in 3:12-14).
- Canonical/NT connections: Ephesians 5:22-6:9 (the fuller, more developed parallel household code); 1 Peter 2:18-3:7; Titus 2:1-10.
- Romans curriculum connection: Extends the Romans-baseline
impartiality_of_godentry (tsis saib ntsej muag, Romans 2:11) from a purely vertical (God’s judgment) to a horizontal (master/slave accountability) application (Colossians 3:25); also reapplies the Romans-baselineservant_slave_doulos(qhev) entry to its literal historical referent, requiring careful disambiguation from its devotional-metaphor use elsewhere. - Hmong translation implication: The highest compound-risk doctrine for a Hmong audience given existing clan/household hierarchy norms; must always be taught with its full reciprocal structure intact (wives’-submission paired with husbands’-love; children’s-obedience paired with fathers’-non-provocation; slaves’-service paired with masters’-justice-and-impartiality) — isolating any one-directional clause from its reciprocal pair is a doctrinal distortion, not merely a stylistic choice.
Doctrine 8: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
- Core passages: Colossians 1:19; Colossians 2:9-10.
- Position in the letter’s flow: The letter’s most concentrated Christological claim, functioning as the theological foundation beneath both Doctrine 1 (supremacy — Christ can hold supreme cosmic rank because he is fully God) and Doctrine 4 (no rival mediator is needed because the entire fullness, not a portion, already dwells in Christ).
- OT roots: Exodus 25:8, 40:34-35 (tabernacle-indwelling); 1 Kings 8:10-11 (temple-indwelling); Isaiah 45:3 (God’s hidden treasures, echoed in 2:3’s “treasures of wisdom and knowledge”).
- Intra-letter connections: The single doctrine most directly and multiply connected to every other doctrine in the letter: it grounds Doctrine 1’s supremacy claim, supplies the “why” behind Doctrine 4’s sufficiency-of-Christ polemic, and (via 2:9’s sōmatikōs, “bodily”) anchors Doctrine 3’s atonement in a genuinely physical, historical death (1:20’s “blood of the cross”).
- Canonical/NT connections: John 1:14 (the Word made flesh, dwelling among us); John 2:19-21 (Christ’s body as the true temple); Hebrews 1:3 (“the exact imprint of his nature”); 1 Timothy 3:16 (“manifested in the flesh”).
- Romans curriculum connection: Extends and deepens (rather than directly reusing) the Romans-baseline
son_of_godentry (Leej Tub ntawm Vajtswv) and its “full deity” preservation note (already flagged against diminished-Sonship sectarian readings); Colossians 2:9 is this Language Package’s single strongest textual anchor against any Arian/Watchtower-pattern Christology across both curricula. - Hmong translation implication: Requires the highest tier of theologian review in the entire Language Package; must simultaneously guard against docetism (denying the real body) and subordinationism (denying the full, undivided divine nature) — a genuinely two-sided guard-rail unlike most other Critical entries in this package, which guard against only one direction of error.

This diagram supplies the theological “spine” for any curriculum unit that wishes to place Colossians within the larger biblical storyline: Colossians 1:15-20 functions as the canon’s mid-point summary statement of themes that begin in Genesis and resolve in Revelation, rather than as a self-contained theological unit.
§4. Letter Structure Map (Theme-Tagged)
| Section | Colossians Reference | Primary Theme Tags |
|---|---|---|

| Application to the readers; Paul’s ministry | 1:21-29 | Doctrine 3 (reconciliation applied); mystery; Paul’s suffering guard-rail |
| Warning against false teaching | 2:1-23 | Doctrine 4 (primary); Doctrines 1, 5, 8 (defensive support) |
| New-life ethics: put off/put on | 3:1-17 | Doctrines 5, 6 (primary) |
| Household code | 3:18-4:1 | Doctrine 7 (primary); Doctrine 1 (Master-in-heaven anchor) |
| Closing exhortations, greetings, benediction | 4:2-18 | Prayer; mystery (recap); gracious speech; epistolary parallel to Romans 16 |
§5. Cross-Curriculum Theme Comparison: Romans vs. Colossians
| Theme Dimension | Romans’ Emphasis | Colossians’ Emphasis | Hmong Package Implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Argument structure | Linear doctrinal progression (sin → justification → sanctification → election → ethics) | Radial: one Christological center, applied outward | Curriculum sequencing must differ: Romans can be taught sequentially chapter-by-chapter; Colossians should be taught core-passage-first, then outward to its applications. |
| Primary anthropological problem addressed | Universal sin and guilt (Romans 1-3) | Rival spiritual/philosophical claims to sufficiency (Colossians 2) | Distinct but complementary; Colossians presupposes rather than re-argues Romans’ sin-and-guilt doctrine. |
| Cosmic-powers vocabulary | Present but minor, unglossed (Romans 8:38; civil sense in 13:1) | Central and heavily glossed (1:16, 2:10, 2:15) | Colossians functions as the fuller doctrinal treatment; recommend retroactive TM alignment for Romans 8:38 per 09_cross_reference_analysis.md §3. |
| Union-with-Christ development | Introduced and developed across chs. 6-8, 12 | Concentrated and intensified in 2:11-13, 2:20, 3:1-4 (near-verbatim parallel to Romans 6:3-4) | Single strongest cross-curriculum consistency requirement in this Language Package. |
| Ethical section structure | General exhortation (ch.12) + civil authority (ch.13) + disputable matters (ch.14) | Vice/virtue lists (3:5-17) + concentrated household code (3:18-4:1) | Household Codes are far more developed in Colossians than anywhere in Romans; this doctrine is a genuinely new addition to the Language Package, not a Romans extension. |
| Highest-risk doctrinal term | election_choose / righteousness_of_god (forensic imputation) | θεότης/fullness-of-Deity and the cosmic-powers cluster | Both curricula carry Critical-tier theological risk, but of different kinds: Romans’ risk is primarily soteriological (how one is saved); Colossians’ risk is primarily Christological-cosmological (who Christ is relative to the spirit-world) — this distinction should inform how theologian review is scoped for each. |
§6. Governing Note
This theme map, together with analysis/09_cross_reference_analysis.md, analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, and analysis/08_core_glossary.md, constitutes the Phase 1 theological-structural foundation for the Hmong Colossians Language Package. It extends, and at no point contradicts, the Hmong Romans Language Package baseline. Any future Phase 2 curriculum content generated from this material must preserve the radial (Christ-center-outward) structure documented in §1 as the letter’s own internal logic, rather than imposing the linear structure appropriate to Romans.
