Semantic Analysis
1 John — Full-Book Semantic Analysis (Hmong Language Package)
§0. Method and Governing Conventions
This analysis follows the register, script, and risk-tier conventions of the Romans baseline exactly:
- Script: RPA (Romanized Popular Alphabet), White Hmong / Hmong Daw.
- Register: Formal, reverent, literary Hmong consistent with the existing Hmong Bible translation tradition (Vajtswv Txoj Lus).
- Risk tiers (unchanged from
bible_term_registry.jsonregistry_metadata):- Critical — doctrinally load-bearing term with a strong, specific collision with Hmong traditional religion (animism/shamanism/ancestor veneration/fate/reincarnation) that could invert or neutralize the doctrine if unaddressed.
- High — real potential for confusion with a specific traditional-religious concept or practice; manageable with a documented disambiguating strategy.
- Medium — partial semantic mismatch, register gap, or comprehension gap with no direct collision.
- Low — already-stable, safe rendering with minimal ambiguity.
- Inheritance rule: Every term appearing in
assets/translation_memory.jsonis reused character-for-character below. Where 1 John uses a cognate but lexically distinct Greek word for a concept already fixed in the Romans TM (e.g., ἱλασμός hilasmos here vs. ἱλαστήριον hilastērion in Rom 3:25), this analysis recommends reusing the fixed Hmong rendering for the same doctrinal referent and flags the decision explicitly for translator confirmation rather than silently minting a new gloss. - 1 John is short (5 chapters, 105 verses) but doctrinally dense; several terms recur across chapters with identical Hmong renderings — each is defined once at first occurrence and cross-referenced thereafter.
- New risk category surfaced in this book, absent from Romans: Hmong traditional belief in soul reincarnation/multiple souls and spirit-possession/mediumship (beyond the fate/hmoov and shamanic-power/hwjchim collisions already documented in Romans) becomes newly load-bearing here because 1 John’s central vocabulary of being “born of God” (γεννάω) and the Word “coming in the flesh” (ἐν σαρκὶ) directly intersects with Hmong concepts of the soul’s journey, multiple embodiments, and spirit-mediums who are temporarily “entered” by spirits (txiv neeb channeling dab). These collisions are documented term-by-term below and must be added to the cumulative forbidden-substitution list in any Phase 2 requirements document for this curriculum.
PART A — Core Passage: 1 John 4:7-21, Verse-by-Verse
Doctrinal anchor: God is Light and God is Love; Fellowship with God and One Another; Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life.
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning in context | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beloved ἀγαπητοί agapētoi ”loved ones” | term of affectionate address beloved, dear friends | Pastoral address grounding the command in relationship, not obligation | cov uas kuv hlub — Low. Vocative form of kev hlub (TM, Low). |
| love (v., mutual) ἀγαπῶμεν agapōmen ”let us love” | volitional, self-giving love, distinct from ἔρος/φιλία love, cherish | The command flowing from doctrine (v.7a “let us”) into practice | cia peb sib hlub — Low. Reuses TM kev hlub (agapē). |
| is of God ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐστιν ek tou theou estin ”is out of/from God” | source/origin preposition comes from, originates in | Love is not a human achievement but has its ultimate source in God’s own nature (anticipates v.8’s identity claim) | yog tuaj ntawm Vajtswv los — Low-Medium. Must not be softened to a mere comparison (“zoo li Vajtswv,” is like God); it is a claim of divine origin. |
| born of God γεγέννηται gegennētai (perfect passive of γεννάω, gennaō) “has been begotten/born” | birth, physical procreation; metaphorical divine begetting born, begotten | NEW TERM — Critical. The central New-Birth doctrine: a completed, past-tense, God-caused spiritual begetting that now produces observable fruit (love). See term entry below. | yug los ntawm Vajtswv — Critical. Direct collision risk with Hmong reincarnation/multi-soul beliefs — see dedicated discussion after v.7. |
| knows God γινώσκει τὸν θεόν ginōskei ton theon ”knows God” | experiential, relational knowing (γινώσκω) vs. factual knowing (οἶδα) knows, has come to know | Relational, experiential knowledge that is inseparable from loving conduct — not mere intellectual assent | paub Vajtswv — Medium. Hmong paub covers both factual and relational knowing without distinction; teaching note needed to draw out the relational, not merely informational, sense. |
Dedicated note — “born of God” (γεννάω): This verb recurs seven times in 1 John (2:29; 3:9 [x2]; 4:7; 5:1 [x2]; 5:4, 18) and is the lexical backbone of the doctrine “Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth.” Hmong traditional cosmology holds that a person possesses multiple souls (ntsuj plig, plural), that a soul may wander and require ritual retrieval (hu plig), and in some frameworks that souls cycle through further embodiments. If “born of God” is heard against this backdrop, hearers risk assimilating regeneration into a cyclical, multiple-soul framework — as though becoming a Christian added “another soul” or represented one more embodiment among many, rather than a definitive, once-for-all, Spirit-wrought re-creation of the whole person. Mandatory teaching note required at every occurrence: “yug los ntawm Vajtswv” must be taught as a single, permanent, non-repeatable spiritual re-creation by God’s own initiative (contrast with the many-souls/hu plig framework), and must never be paired with reincarnation-adjacent vocabulary. This is a new Critical-tier collision not present in the Romans baseline (which touched adoption/huiothesia — a legal metaphor with a positive clan-adoption bridge — but not birth/gennaō, an ontological-transformation metaphor).
4:8 — ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν οὐκ ἔγνω τὸν θεόν, ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν.
“The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| does not know οὐκ ἔγνω ouk egnō (aorist of γινώσκω) “did not come to know” | as v.7 never knew, has not known | The negative counterpart: absence of love is diagnostic evidence of never having truly known God | tsis tau paub Vajtswv — Medium, as above. |
| God is love ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν ho theos agapē estin ”God love is” | predicate-nominative identity statement (no article on ἀγάπη — a quality-noun predicated of God’s essence, not “a” love among loves) God is love | Doctrinal core statement. This is an ontological identity claim about God’s very nature/essence, not merely a description of one of His activities or attributes among others (contrast “God is loving,” a weaker attributive claim). | Vajtswv yog kev hlub — High. The copula yog (is/equals, true identity) MUST be used rather than zoo li (is like, comparison); Hmong grammar permits both constructions and a translator or oral teacher defaulting to the more common comparative idiom would weaken Paul… [John’s] ontological claim to a mere simile. Mandatory qualifier: teaching note affirming this as a statement of God’s essential nature, paired with the parallel “God is Light” claim in 1:5 (see below) as twin ontological anchors for the whole epistle. |
“In this the love of God was manifested among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| was manifested ἐφανερώθη ephanerōthē (aorist passive of φανερόω) “was made visible/apparent” | disclosure of what was previously hidden or invisible was manifested, was revealed, was shown | God’s love is not abstract sentiment but a historically enacted, visible event (the incarnation and mission of the Son) | tau tshwm sim tseeb tiag — NEW TERM, Low-Medium. See dedicated entry under Ch.3 below (φανερόω also anchors 3:2,5,8). |
| only Son / only-begotten τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν μονογενῆ ton huion autou ton monogenē ”His son, the only-one-of-a-kind” | unique, one-of-a-kind sonship (not “only-begotten” in a biological-origin sense but unique-in-class) only Son, only-begotten Son, one and only Son | Affirms Christ’s absolute uniqueness as Son, safeguarding against any diminished-sonship reading | Leej Tub ntawm Vajtswv — Low. Reuses TM entry exactly (Romans #7); the μονογενῆ nuance (“one and only”) should be reinforced with an added modifying phrase tib leeg Leej Tub (“the one and only Son”) in this specific verse to preserve μονογενῆ’s uniqueness sense that “Leej Tub ntawm Vajtswv” alone does not fully carry. |
| sent ἀπέσταλκεν apestalken (perfect of ἀποστέλλω) “has sent/commissioned” | authoritative sending with ongoing effect sent, has sent | God as the initiating, sending agent of salvation — grounds the missionary/apostolic pattern | tau txib — Low. Cognate root to TM’s apostle: tus Tub Txib (Romans #9); consistent usage. |
| that we might live ἵνα ζήσωμεν hina zēsōmen ”so that we might live” | purpose clause; ζάω, to live (contrasted with θάνατος, death) might live, would live | Ties directly to eternal_life (TM: txoj sia nyob mus ib txhis) as the purpose of the Son’s mission | kom peb tau txoj sia — Low. |
“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| not that we loved God οὐχ ὅτι ἡμεῖς ἠγαπήκαμεν τὸν θεόν ouch hoti hēmeis ēgapēkamen ton theon ”not that we have loved God” | negated priority clause not that we loved | Excludes human initiative as the ground of love/salvation — parallel structure to grace-alone logic in Romans (txiaj ntsim, Critical) | tsis yog vim peb hlub Vajtswv ua ntej — Low, but doctrinally load-bearing by association with grace-alone (see cross-reference note below). |
| propitiation ἱλασμόν hilasmon (accusative of ἱλασμός) “means/act of propitiation, that which appeases/satisfies” | atoning sacrifice that satisfies divine wrath/justice; cognate to ἱλαστήριον (Rom 3:25) propitiation, atoning sacrifice, means of atonement | Same doctrinal referent as Romans’ hilastērion: Christ’s death as the God-provided, once-for-all satisfaction of God’s righteous wrath against sin | qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum — Critical. TM-inheritance decision: although ἱλασμός (1 John 4:10; 2:2) is a distinct Greek lexeme from ἱλαστήριον (Rom 3:25), both refer to the identical doctrinal reality (Christ’s atoning, wrath-satisfying sacrifice). This analysis recommends reusing the Romans TM rendering qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum without modification, carrying forward its full teaching apparatus (once-for-all, sufficient, unrepeatable, explicitly distinguished from shamanic sacrificial appeasement — fij dab). [TRANSLATOR REVIEW NEEDED: confirm cross-lexeme TM extension from hilastērion to hilasmos before formal TM-revision entry is created for the 1 John package.] |
| for our sins περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν peri tōn hamartiōn hēmōn ”concerning/regarding our sins” | reference/purpose preposition + TM sin for/concerning our sins | Names the specific object the propitiation addresses | rau peb tej kev txhaum — Low. Reuses TM txhaum / kev txhaum exactly. |
4:11 — Ἀγαπητοί, εἰ οὕτως ὁ θεὸς ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς, καὶ ἡμεῖς ὀφείλομεν ἀλλήλους ἀγαπᾶν.
“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ought ὀφείλομεν opheilomen ”we owe, are obligated” | debt/obligation verb, cognate with TM debtor (ὀφειλέτης, Romans #75) ought, are obligated, owe it | Frames brotherly love as a debt flowing from having received love, not an optional virtue | peb yuav tsum / peb tshuav nqi — Low-Medium. May optionally reuse the debt-idiom from TM’s debtor: tus tshuav nqi (Romans #75) for a vivid cross-reference, since Hmong debt-culture provides a strong natural bridge, exactly as documented in the Romans baseline. |
“No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| has seen τεθέαται tetheatai (perfect of θεάομαι) “has gazed upon, has beheld” | visual perception, often of something remarkable has seen, has beheld | God’s invisibility means love among believers becomes the visible proof/display of the invisible God’s presence | tau pom — Low. |
| abides μένει menei (present of μένω) “remains, stays, dwells continuously” | ongoing, settled indwelling (not a brief visit) abides, remains, dwells | NEW TERM — High. Central verb of Fellowship/Union doctrine throughout 1 John (2:6,10,14,17,24,27,28; 3:6,9,14,15,17,24; 4:12,13,15,16). See dedicated entry below. | nyob ruaj nrees hauv — High. |
| perfected τετελειωμένη ἐστίν teteleiōmenē estin (perfect passive of τελειόω) “has been brought to completion/maturity” | completion, full realization of purpose (not moral perfectionism in the sense of sinlessness) is perfected, is made complete, is brought to full expression | Love reaches its intended, mature expression precisely through action among believers, not through abstract feeling | ua kom dhau chaw / muaj tag nrho lawm — NEW TERM, Medium. Must not be heard as “flawless performance” (which would reintroduce works-anxiety) but as love reaching its designed, full realization. |
Dedicated note — “abide/remain” (μένω, menō): This verb is 1 John’s primary vocabulary for ongoing, permanent fellowship/union with God, parallel to but distinct from the Romans TM’s fixed formula nyob hauv Khetos (en Christō, “in Christ,” High risk, Romans TM). Where Romans’ en Christō is a spatial-participatory formula anchored to Christ’s death/resurrection, 1 John’s menō is a durative verb describing continuous, unbroken indwelling (of God in the believer and the believer in God) evidenced by love, obedience, and confession. Recommendation: render consistently as nyob ruaj nrees hauv (“remain firmly/steadfastly within”) wherever μένω describes this theological fellowship-relationship, reserving plain nyob hauv (bare “is in/at”) only for ordinary spatial location, exactly parallel to the disambiguation strategy already established for en Christō in the Romans TM. Risk: High — without the “ruaj nrees” (firm, steadfast) qualifier, the verb collapses into a merely spatial or temporary-visitation sense, which in a Hmong animistic frame could even suggest a spirit temporarily “residing in” a person (as in mediumship/possession phenomena) rather than a permanent, exclusive divine indwelling. Mandatory qualifier phrase, new for this Language Package.
“By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| we know γινώσκομεν ginōskomen as v.7-8 | relational/experiential knowing we know, we perceive | Assurance-language: the indwelling Spirit is the evidentiary basis for confident knowledge of mutual abiding | peb paub — Medium, as above. |
| of His Spirit ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος αὐτοῦ ek tou pneumatos autou ”out of/from His Spirit” | partitive-source use; refers to the Holy Spirit of His Spirit, from His Spirit | Grounds assurance in the objective gift of the Holy Spirit rather than subjective feeling alone | ntawm nws Vaj Ntsuj Plig — Low. Mandatory Vaj prefix retained per Romans TM (Critical term #5); never drop to bare ntsuj plig, which would confuse the divine Spirit with the anthropological human soul (TM #6) or a folk wandering-soul. |
4:14 — καὶ ἡμεῖς τεθεάμεθα καὶ μαρτυροῦμεν ὅτι ὁ πατὴρ ἀπέσταλκεν τὸν υἱὸν σωτῆρα τοῦ κόσμου.
“And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| testify μαρτυροῦμεν martyroumen ”we bear witness” | legal/testimonial witnessing testify, bear witness, witness | Apostolic eyewitness testimony as the ground of the church’s proclamation | timkhawv — Low. Reuses TM witness: tus timkhawv (Romans #72) verb form. |
| Savior σωτῆρα sōtēra ”savior, deliverer, rescuer” | one who rescues from peril/death; royal-deliverer title in Greco-Roman usage, redemptive title in biblical usage Savior, Deliverer, Rescuer | Ties directly to TM salvation_save (σωτηρία/σῴζω, High risk, Romans #63); “Savior” is the agent-noun of the same root | tus Cawmseej — NEW TERM, High. Established Hmong Christian title (“the one who saves/rescues”); must remain anchored explicitly to Christ as sole Savior, echoing the Romans mandate that kev cawm dim always be anchored to Yexus Khetos and distinguished from shamanic soul-rescue (ua neeb). |
“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| confesses ὁμολογήσῃ homologēsē (aorist subjunctive of ὁμολογέω) “says the same thing, agrees, acknowledges openly” | public acknowledgment/agreement with a stated truth confesses, acknowledges, declares openly | NEW TERM — Medium. Distinguishes true confession of Christ’s identity from mere private belief; ties to the confession-of-sin usage in 1:9 and the anti-antichrist test in 4:2-3 | lees paub tias — Medium. See dedicated entry under Ch.1 below; consistent with the phrase already flagged in the Romans requirements document (§3.1: “hu … lees paub tias Yexus yog tus Tswv”). |
| Jesus is the Son of God Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ Iēsous estin ho huios tou theou — | creedal identity statement Jesus is the Son of God | The minimal, non-negotiable creedal confession that distinguishes true from false spirits (cf. 4:1-6) | Yexus yog Leej Tub ntawm Vajtswv — Low. Reuses TM exactly (#7). |
“And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”
This verse restates v.8’s “God is love” identity claim (see note above — Vajtswv yog kev hlub, High) and combines it with the menō (“abide”) vocabulary of v.12-13 (nyob ruaj nrees hauv, High). No new terms; both mandatory qualifiers apply simultaneously and must never be abbreviated.
“Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| boldness/confidence παρρησίαν parrēsian ”freedom of speech, openness, fearlessness before authority” | courtroom/public-speech confidence; also intimate access boldness, confidence, assurance | NEW TERM — Medium. Assurance-of-salvation vocabulary: believers may stand before the divine Judge without terror | kev txaus siab tsis ntshai — Medium. See dedicated entry below (also 2:28; 3:21; 5:14). |
| day of judgment ἡμέρᾳ τῆς κρίσεως hēmera tēs kriseōs ”day of judging/separating” | eschatological assize day of judgment, judgment day | Grounds assurance specifically in the future divine tribunal, not merely present feeling | hnub Vajtswv txiav txim — Low-Medium. Compound reusing familiar judgment vocabulary; no direct TM entry but transparent construction. |
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| fear φόβος phobos ”fear, dread, terror” | anxious dread of punishment (contextually, not reverent awe) fear, dread, terror | NEW TERM — Low. Specifically the anxious dread of condemnation that mature love displaces, not reverent fear-of-the-Lord | kev ntshai — Low. Standard everyday term; teaching note distinguishes this dread-fear from reverent awe (not lexically marked separately in Hmong, so must be taught contextually). |
| perfect (love) τελεία teleia ”complete, mature, having reached its goal” | as v.12 τετελειωμένη perfect, complete, mature, full-grown | Not sinless perfection but love that has reached its full, mature, God-given expression, displacing anxious dread | kev hlub uas zoo tag nrho — Medium, as v.12. |
| torment κόλασιν kolasin ”punishment, torment” | punitive suffering torment, punishment | The anxious fearer still senses himself under judgment, showing love’s assuring work is incomplete in him | kev raug txim — Low-Medium. May echo TM’s no_condemnation: kev raug txiav txim rau kev puas tsuaj (Romans #49) by contrast — the very anxiety Christ’s no-condemnation removes. |
4:19 — ἡμεῖς ἀγαπῶμεν, ὅτι αὐτὸς πρῶτος ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς.
“We love Him because He first loved us.”
No new terms; restates the priority-of-God’s-love principle from v.10 with the added temporal marker πρῶτος (“first”) — thawj zaug / ua ntej (Low), reinforcing that all human love for God is responsive, never originating.
“If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| brother ἀδελφόν adelphon ”brother, sibling” | biological sibling; extended to fellow believer/covenant-community member brother, fellow believer | NEW TERM — Low. Central to “Love for the Brethren” doctrine; strong positive cultural bridge via Hmong clan/kinship vocabulary | kwvtij — Low. Existing Hmong term for kin/clan-brother, already extended in Hmong Christian usage to fellow believers; positive bridge, but requires a teaching note that this brotherhood transcends blood-clan boundaries (a genuinely new, wider “clan” — the family of God — replacing rather than merely supplementing blood-clan loyalty). |
| hates μισῇ misē (subjunctive of μισέω) “hates” | strong aversion, opposite of ἀγαπάω hates, despises | Direct antithesis to love; diagnostic test of false profession | ntxub — Low. |
| liar ψεύστης pseustēs ”liar, one who lies habitually” | one characterized by falsehood liar | Strong diagnostic term: a claimed love for God contradicted by hatred of a brother is exposed as false profession, not weak profession | tus dag — Low. |
“And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| commandment ἐντολήν entolēn ”command, order, injunction” | authoritative directive, used throughout 1 John for both the Christ-given love command and obedience generally commandment, command, instruction | NEW TERM — Medium. Distinct from TM’s Law (Mosaic/divine): Txoj Kevcai (ntawm Vajtswv/Mauxes) (Romans #27, Critical) — this is the New Covenant love-command, not the Mosaic code, though continuous with its moral core | tej lus samhwm — Medium. Deliberately NOT rendered with Txoj Kevcai, to avoid triggering the Mosaic-Law/kevcai-root collision documented in the Romans baseline (which requires the mandatory “(ntawm Vajtswv/Mauxes)” qualifier); 1 John’s ἐντολή is Christ’s own directive, most simply and repeatedly the command to love. See dedicated entry below. |
PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (1:1-10) — Prologue, Fellowship, God is Light, Confession
Doctrines touched: Fellowship with God and One Another (primary); God is Light and God is Love; Confession and Forgiveness of Sin.
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| word of life ὁ λόγος τῆς ζωῆς ho logos tēs zōēs ”the word/message of the life” | the apostolic message concerning Christ, who is Himself “the life” (cf. John 1:1-4) the Word of life, the message of life | Anchors the whole epistle in eyewitness, historical testimony to the incarnate Christ, not abstract philosophy | txoj lus uas muaj txoj sia nyob — Low-Medium. Distinct from Gospel: Txoj Moo Zoo (TM, Low) — this phrase specifically foregrounds Christ as the living Word witnessed bodily, relevant to the Incarnation doctrine. |
| we have heard/seen/looked upon/touched ἀκηκόαμεν, ἑωράκαμεν, ἐθεασάμεθα, αἱ χεῖρες ἡμῶν ἐψηλάφησαν akēkoamen, heōrakamen, etheasametha, hai cheires hēmōn epsēlaphēsan ”we have heard / seen / gazed upon / our hands have handled” | cumulative sensory-verification vocabulary (hearing, sight, sustained gaze, physical touch) we have heard, seen, looked upon, touched with our hands | NEW TERM — Critical (Incarnation doctrine). A fourfold sensory-verification chain establishing Christ’s genuine, tangible physicality against any docetic denial that He truly had a physical body | peb tau hnov, tau pom, tau ntsia ntsoov, thiab peb txhais tes tau kov lawm — Critical. This physical-verification emphasis directly answers the same denial-of-real-flesh error targeted in 4:2-3’s antichrist test; must never be abbreviated to mere “we heard about Him,” which would lose the eyewitness-physicality force essential to refuting docetism. |
| fellowship κοινωνία koinōnia ”sharing, participation, partnership” | shared life/participation — with God and with other believers fellowship, communion, partnership | NEW TERM — Medium (Fellowship doctrine, primary term). Twofold fellowship: with God/Christ, and consequently with one another | kev sib koom — Medium. Positive bridge via Hmong’s strong communal/clan-sharing culture, but requires explicit teaching that this fellowship is first vertical (with the Father and the Son) and only derivatively horizontal (with one another) — reversing the order (treating it as merely a horizontal social-fellowship term, as a Hmong hearer might default to given strong clan-solidarity instincts) would flatten the doctrine. |
| light / darkness φῶς / σκοτία phōs / skotia ”light” / “darkness” | physical light vs. absence of light; metaphorically moral/spiritual purity vs. sin and separation from God light, darkness | NEW TERM — High (God is Light doctrine). God’s nature as Light: moral purity, truth, and self-revealing holiness, with no admixture of darkness/sin whatsoever | qhov kaj / qhov tsaus ntuj — High. See dedicated identity-statement note below (1:5, parallel to 4:8’s “God is love”). Positive resonance note: Hmong folk belief often associates darkness/nighttime with heightened spirit activity and danger, which can serve as a helpful pre-existing intuition (darkness = spiritually perilous) — but this must be anchored explicitly to God’s moral purity, not left as a vague “danger” association untethered from holiness. |
| walk (conduct) περιπατῶμεν peripatōmen ”we walk” | metaphor: habitual life-conduct walk, live, conduct oneself | NEW TERM — Low-Medium. Standard biblical metaphor for ongoing moral conduct/lifestyle | taug kev / coj lub neej — Low-Medium. Comprehension-level metaphor; transfers reasonably since “walking a path” is a common Hmong idiom for a way of life. |
| cleanse (by the blood) καθαρίζει (τὸ αἷμα) katharizei (to haima) “cleanses” | ritual/moral purification cleanses, purifies | NEW TERM — High (Confession/Forgiveness doctrine). Christ’s blood as the sole, sufficient cleansing agent for sin — an ongoing, not repeated-ritual, cleansing | ntxuav kom huv — High. Shares the same ritual-purification collision risk already documented for TM’s sanctification: kev raug ua kom dawb huv (Romans #46, High) — Hmong folk practice includes ritual washing/cleansing from spirit-contamination; must be taught as a decisive, once-for-all cleansing accomplished by Christ’s blood alone, never as a repeatable ritual-purification act performed by the believer or a religious specialist. |
| confess ὁμολογῶμεν homologōmen ”we confess/acknowledge” | open acknowledgment of a stated fact confess, acknowledge, admit | NEW TERM — Medium (Confession/Forgiveness doctrine, primary term). Honest acknowledgment of sin to God as the stated condition for ongoing cleansing/forgiveness (1:9) | lees paub (peb tej kev txhaum) — Medium. Distinct from any Hmong ritual apology/restitution practice toward elders or spirits for a social/ritual breach (there is no exact indigenous analogue of confessing moral fault directly to a deity for forgiveness); comprehension gap requiring positive teaching rather than a collision to suppress. |
| forgive ἀφῇ (ἀφίημι) aphē (aphiēmi) “sends away, releases, forgives” | releasing a debt/offense forgives, releases, pardons | NEW TERM — Low. Already an established Hmong Christian term | zam txim — Low. Stable existing usage; no collision. |
| liar / the truth is not in us ψεύστην … ἡ ἀλήθεια οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν pseustēn … hē alētheia ouk estin en hēmin ”we make Him a liar … the truth is not in us” | as 4:20 liar; the truth is not in us | Denial of universal sinfulness (1:8,10) makes God a liar and forfeits indwelling truth | tus dag (reuse) / qhov tseeb tsis nyob hauv peb — Low. Reuses TM truth: qhov tseeb (Romans #33) exactly. |
| unrighteousness ἀδικίας adikias as Romans #34 | wrongdoing, injustice unrighteousness | Object cleansed by confession (1:9) | kev tsis ncaj ncees — Low. Reuses TM exactly. |
Dedicated note — “God is Light” (1:5, ὁ θεὸς φῶς ἐστιν καὶ σκοτία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν οὐδεμία): Structurally and doctrinally parallel to “God is love” (4:8, 16). Same translation risk applies: the copula yog must be used (Vajtswv yog qhov kaj), not a comparative construction, to preserve the ontological-identity force. These are the epistle’s two great identity-predications and should be taught together as twin anchors — God’s essential moral purity (Light) and God’s essential self-giving nature (Love) — both High risk for the identity-statement-vs-comparison reason documented above.
Chapter 2 (2:1-29) — Advocate, Commandments, Antichrist, Abiding
Doctrines touched: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin; The Incarnation and Antichrist; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; Overcoming the World; Fellowship with God and One Another.
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| little children (address) τεκνία teknia ”little children” (diminutive, affectionate) | pastoral term of address, not a doctrinal category little children, my children, dear children | Affectionate pastoral address distinct from the doctrinal children of God (τέκνα θεοῦ, 3:1-2) | kuv cov me nyuam — Low. Address form; keep visually/lexically distinct from the doctrinal term below. |
| advocate (of Christ before the Father) παράκλητον paraklēton ”one called alongside to help; advocate, intercessor” | legal-advocate/intercessor sense here (cf. the Spirit as paraklētos in John’s Gospel — a related but distinct referent) advocate, intercessor, counselor for the defense | NEW TERM — High (Confession/Forgiveness; Assurance). Christ’s ongoing heavenly intercession on behalf of confessing believers, grounded in His own righteousness | tus sawv cev thov Vajtswv pab (“one who stands in our place pleading with God on our behalf”) — High. Risk: Hmong traditional religion has a functionally similar role — the shaman (txiv neeb) as ritual intermediary who negotiates with spirits on a client’s behalf. Christ’s advocacy must be explicitly distinguished: (a) He pleads on the ground of His own finished righteousness and propitiatory death, not ritual technique or negotiated appeasement; (b) His intercession is perpetual and infallible, not a repeatable transaction requiring renewed payment. Mandatory disambiguating teaching note required at every occurrence. |
| righteous (Jesus Christ, ὁ δίκαιος) δίκαιον dikaion ”righteous, just” | as Romans #25 the righteous one, the just one | Christ’s own perfect righteousness is the ground of His advocacy | tus ncaj ncees — Low. Reuses TM exactly. |
| know / have come to know γινώσκομεν / ἐγνώκαμεν ginōskomen / egnōkamen as 4:7-8 | relational knowing know, have come to know | Assurance-test: obedience to commandments as evidentiary proof of truly knowing Christ (2:3-4) | paub — Medium, as established above. |
| commandment(s) / keep ἐντολή(ς) / τηρῶμεν, τηρῇ entolē(s) / tērōmen, tērē ”command(s)” / “we keep, guard, observe” | authoritative directive; τηρέω = guard, keep watchfully commandment(s); keep, obey, observe | See dedicated entry under 4:21 above; recurs as the primary evidentiary category throughout ch. 2-3 | tej lus samhwm / tuav rawv, coj raws — Medium. |
| new/old commandment ἐντολὴν καινήν … παλαιάν entolēn kainēn … palaian ”new/old commandment” | the love-command, both ancient (already given) and new (fulfilled/clarified in Christ) new commandment, old commandment | The love-command is not novel content but newly, fully embodied in Christ and in the believer’s new-covenant experience | lus samhwm tshiab / qub — Low-Medium. |
| darkness passing away / true light already shining ἡ σκοτία παράγεται καὶ τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν ἤδη φαίνει hē skotia paragetai kai to phōs to alēthinon ēdē phainei ”the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining” | eschatological transition-in-progress the darkness is passing, the true light is already shining | Reuses light/darkness vocabulary (ch.1) in an inaugurated-eschatology frame | qhov tsaus ntuj tabtom ploj mus, thiab qhov kaj tseeb twb tabtom ci lawm — Low-Medium, reusing established terms. |
| overcome / overcome the evil one νενικήκατε (τὸν πονηρόν) nenikēkate (ton ponēron) “you have conquered/overcome” | victorious defeat of an opponent you have overcome, you have conquered | NEW TERM — Medium (Overcoming the World doctrine, primary term). Believers’ decisive spiritual victory over Satan through the word of God abiding in them | yeej (tus limhiam) — Medium. See dedicated entry under Ch.5 below (5:4-5, the fullest development). |
| the evil one τὸν πονηρόν ton ponēron ”the evil one” | title for Satan the evil one, the wicked one | NEW TERM — Medium. See also devil entry below (Ch.3); functions as a synonym | tus limhiam — Medium-High. Related to the Ntxwg Nyoog naming discussion under Ch.3. |
| love of the world / lust of the flesh / lust of the eyes / pride of life ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ κόσμου … ἡ ἐπιθυμία τῆς σαρκὸς καὶ ἡ ἐπιθυμία τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν καὶ ἡ ἀλαζονεία τοῦ βίου hē agapē tou kosmou … hē epithymia tēs sarkos kai hē epithymia tōn ophthalmōn kai hē alazoneia tou biou ”the love of the world … the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance/pride of life” | a threefold taxonomy of worldly temptation love of the world; lust/desire of the flesh; lust of the eyes; pride/boastfulness of life | NEW TERMS — Medium (Overcoming the World doctrine). A structured warning against worldly desire in bodily appetite, visual covetousness, and status-boasting | kev hlub lub ntiajteb (Low, reuses TM love + world); kev ntshaw ntawm lub cev nqaij tawv (Medium, reuses TM flesh_moral_sinful_nature periphrasis); kev ntshaw ntawm qhov muag (Low-Medium); kev khav ntawm lub neej (Low-Medium). |
| last hour ἐσχάτη ὥρα eschatē hōra ”last hour” | eschatological urgency marker last hour, last time | NEW TERM — Low. Signals the present eschatological era in which antichrists appear | lub sijhawm kawg — Low. |
| antichrist(s) ἀντίχριστος / ἀντίχριστοι antichristos / antichristoi ”against-Christ, in place of Christ” | one who opposes and/or falsely claims to replace Christ; here specifically those denying the Father-Son relationship and Christ’s true incarnation antichrist(s) | NEW TERM — High (The Incarnation and Antichrist doctrine, primary term). Both a future eschatological figure and, more immediately in 1 John, present false teachers denying Christ’s identity/incarnation | tus Tawm Tsam Khetos (“the one who opposes/is against Christ”) — High, with the transliterated proper-noun form Antikhetos available as a secondary gloss for cross-reference to Revelation. Risk: comprehension gap plus doctrinal weight (the term must clearly denote active, doctrinal opposition to Christ’s true identity, not a vague “enemy” or “bad spirit” in the generic dab sense); requires explicit teaching tying it to the specific denial named in 2:22 and 4:2-3. |
| deny ἀρνούμενος arnoumenos ”denying” | refusal to acknowledge a stated truth denies, disowns | NEW TERM — Low. Direct antonym of “confess” (ὁμολογέω) | tsis lees paub — Low. |
| anointing χρῖσμα chrisma ”an anointing, that which is smeared/applied” | the act/substance of anointing; here metaphorical for the Holy Spirit’s teaching presence in every believer anointing, unction | NEW TERM — High (Testing the Spirits; Assurance). The Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence, which teaches believers to discern truth from the antichrists’ lies, without needing to depend on the false teachers’ claims | kev tau txais Vaj Ntsuj Plig los qhia peb (“the receiving of the Holy Spirit who teaches us”) — High. Risk: (a) comprehension gap, since ritual anointing with oil has no native Hmong analogue; (b) potential magical-power misreading if presented as a potent substance conferring supernatural protection (paralleling amulets/protective charms in folk practice) rather than the Holy Spirit’s teaching ministry. Recommendation: avoid a literal “oil” gloss in primary text; render functionally as the Spirit’s given, indwelling teaching ministry, with the mandatory Vaj Ntsuj Plig prefix retained at every occurrence. |
| Holy One τοῦ ἁγίου tou hagiou ”of the Holy One” | title for Christ (or possibly the Spirit) as the source of the anointing the Holy One | NEW TERM — Medium. | tus Dawb Huv — Medium. Reuses the dawb huv root from TM’s sanctification entry (Romans #46); positive continuity, comprehension-level only. |
| confidence / shrink in shame παρρησίαν / μὴ αἰσχυνθῶμεν parrēsian / mē aischynthōmen ”boldness” / “not be put to shame” | courtroom-confidence vocabulary; αἰσχύνομαι = TM’s ashamed root (Romans #76, ἐπαισχύνομαι) confidence, boldness; not be ashamed | Assurance at Christ’s return: confident, not shrinking, before Him | kev txaus siab tsis ntshai / tsis txaj muag — Medium / Low (reusing TM ashamed: txaj muag exactly). |
| born of Him / practices righteousness γεγέννηται ἐξ αὐτοῦ / ποιῶν τὴν δικαιοσύνην gegennētai ex autou / poiōn tēn dikaiosynēn ”has been born of Him” / “doing righteousness” | as 4:7 born of Him; practices righteousness | Practiced righteousness is presented as evidence, not the ground, of new birth — consistent with the imputed-then-lived-out righteousness pattern already established in the Romans TM (justify_reckon_as_righteous, Critical) | yug los ntawm nws (reuse, Critical, see 4:7 note) / coj lub neej ncaj ncees — Low-Medium, reusing TM righteousness root; must be taught alongside the Romans-established forensic/imputed distinction so this is not misread as self-achieved righteousness earning new birth (reversing the actual causal order: birth produces righteous living, not the reverse). |
Chapter 3 (3:1-24) — Children of God, Devil’s Works, Love in Deed, Assurance
Doctrines touched: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (primary); Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; God is Light and God is Love (continued); Fellowship with God and One Another.
| Term | Greek | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| children of God | τέκνα θεοῦ | tekna theou | ”children of God” | birth-based, familial-identity term (τέκνον, one born/begotten) | children of God, sons of God (in the birth sense) | NEW TERM — Critical (Love for Brethren/New Birth doctrine, primary term). Distinct from the Romans TM’s adoption_as_sons (υἱοθεσία, huiothesia, Medium risk, a legal-transfer metaphor); τέκνα θεοῦ in 1 John foregrounds the birth itself (γεννάω), not merely legal status | cov me nyuam ntawm Vajtswv — Critical. Same reincarnation/multi-soul collision documented under 4:7’s “born of God” note applies directly here, since τέκνα is the noun-form outcome of the verb γεννάω. Must be taught as a complement to, not a replacement for, the existing adoption_as_sons entry: adoption (legal, Romans) emphasizes inheritance-rights bestowed by decree; children-of-God-by-birth (1 John) emphasizes an actual internal re-creation of nature. Both realities are true simultaneously and must not be collapsed into one flattened idea. |
| the world does not know us | ὁ κόσμος οὐ γινώσκει ἡμᾶς | ho kosmos ou ginōskei hēmas | ”the world does not know us” | as v.7-8 knowing-vocabulary, negated, applied to the world’s ignorance of believers | the world does not know us | The world’s non-recognition of believers mirrors and continues its prior non-recognition of Christ | lub ntiajteb tsis paub peb — Low, reusing TM world and established paub. |
| purify himself | ἁγνίζει ἑαυτόν | hagnizei heauton | ”purifies/cleanses himself” | ritual and moral self-purification (distinct verb-root from καθαρίζω in 1:7,9) | purifies himself, keeps himself pure | NEW TERM — High. The hope of Christ’s appearing produces active, ongoing self-purification | ua kom nws tus kheej dawb huv — High. Same collision risk as TM’s sanctification (Romans #46): the dawb huv root also denotes ritual purity from spirit-contamination in folk practice; must be taught as a Spirit-enabled moral discipline motivated by hope of Christ’s return, never a ritual-cleansing act performed to placate a spiritual power. |
| appearing / manifested | φανερωθῇ / ἐφανερώθη | phanerōthē / ephanerōthē | ”is made visible/apparent” | as 4:9 | is revealed, appears, is manifested | Used of both Christ’s future appearing (3:2) and the past manifestation of the Son to destroy sin (3:5,8) | tshwm sim — Low-Medium. |
| sin is lawlessness | ἡ ἁμαρτία ἐστὶν ἡ ἀνομία | hē hamartia estin hē anomia | ”sin is lawlessness” | ἀνομία = state of being without/against law; not necessarily the Mosaic code specifically, but rebellion against God’s moral order generally | sin is lawlessness | NEW TERM — Medium. Defines sin’s essential character as rebellion against God’s rightful moral order | kev txhaum yog kev tsis coj raws li Vajtswv txoj kevcai — Medium. Deliberately includes the Romans-mandated (ntawm Vajtswv)-style qualifying reference to avoid the kevcai-root collision (generic ancestral-custom-keeping) already documented for Law (Mosaic/Divine) in the Romans TM (#27, Critical); here the reference is to God’s moral order broadly, not the Mosaic code narrowly, and the phrasing should make that breadth clear in a teaching note. |
| seed of God | σπέρμα αὐτοῦ | sperma autou | ”His seed” | procreative/generative metaphor (agricultural or biological) | His seed, His nature | NEW TERM — Medium. The divine, generative principle abiding in the one born of God that produces an inability to keep sinning as a settled life-pattern | noob ntawm Vajtswv — Medium. Agricultural seed-imagery is culturally accessible (agrarian Hmong context, cf. TM’s firstfruits entry, Romans TM addendum), though it compounds the same born-of-God collision risk noted above and should be taught together with that entry, not independently. |
| children of God vs. children of the devil | τέκνα τοῦ θεοῦ … τέκνα τοῦ διαβόλου | tekna tou theou … tekna tou diabolou | ”children of God … children of the devil” | contrastive familial-spiritual paternity | children of God / children of the devil | The stark either-or contrast structuring the whole doctrine of new birth and its evidence | cov me nyuam ntawm Vajtswv (reuse, Critical) contrasted with cov me nyuam ntawm Ntxwg Nyoog — Critical, inheriting both the new-birth collision above and the devil-naming risk below. |
| devil | τοῦ διαβόλου | tou diabolou | ”the slanderer, accuser” | the personal chief adversary, Satan | the devil, Satan | NEW TERM — High (Incarnation and Antichrist; Overcoming the World). The personal, defeated enemy whose works Christ came to destroy (3:8) | Ntxwg Nyoog — High. This is the established proper name for Satan/the devil already in wide use in Hmong Christian tradition (distinct from the common noun dab, “spirit/demon,” used generically for the whole animistic spirit category, and from dab mlom, “idol,” TM #32). Mandatory disambiguating teaching note: Ntxwg Nyoog must be presented as a single, personal, already-defeated enemy under Christ’s authority (3:8; cf. the “overcome” vocabulary of ch.2, 4, 5) — not as one more spirit within the broader, still-to-be-negotiated-with dab category that traditional practice seeks to appease or manage. Converts must understand that Christ’s victory means Ntxwg Nyoog is not to be feared, bargained with, or ritually placated in the manner of household/ancestral dab. |
| murderer | ἀνθρωποκτόνος | anthrōpoktonos | ”man-killer” | one who kills; applied typologically to Cain and, by extension, to hatred’s murderous root | murderer | NEW TERM — Low. | tus tua neeg — Low. |
| passed from death to life | μεταβεβήκαμεν ἐκ τοῦ θανάτου εἰς τὴν ζωήν | metabebēkamen ek tou thanatou eis tēn zōēn | ”we have crossed over from death into life” | decisive transition metaphor | have passed from death to life | Reuses TM death and implicitly eternal_life; brotherly love is presented as the evidentiary marker of having already made this transition | peb twb hla dhau txoj kev tuag mus rau txoj sia lawm — Low, reusing TM terms exactly. |
| laid down His life for us | τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἔθηκεν | tēn psychēn autou ethēken | ”He laid down His soul/life” | self-sacrificial death, echoing the Good Shepherd motif | laid down His life, gave His life | NEW TERM — Medium. Christ’s atoning death as the pattern and enabling ground for costly, sacrificial brotherly love | muab nws txoj sia tso tseg rau peb — Medium. May be cross-referenced to TM’s redemption: kev txhiv (Romans #38) for the price-payment dimension, and to propitiation for the atoning dimension, while remaining a distinct ethical-exemplar emphasis here (cf. 3:16’s “and we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren”). |
| shuts up his heart / bowels of compassion | κλείσῃ τὰ σπλάγχνα αὐτοῦ | kleisē ta splanchna autou | ”closes his inward parts/bowels” | ancient seat-of-emotion idiom (bowels = compassion, as Hmong idiom locates emotion in the siab, liver) | shuts up his compassion, closes his heart | NEW TERM — Low-Medium. Refusal of practical compassion toward a brother in need exposes the absence of God’s love | kaw nws lub siab hlub — Low-Medium. Excellent idiomatic parallel: both Greek (bowels) and Hmong (siab, liver) locate deep emotion in an internal organ rather than the heart; natural, low-risk bridge. |
| in word or tongue … in deed and truth | μὴ λόγῳ … ἀλλὰ ἐν ἔργῳ καὶ ἀληθείᾳ | mē logō … alla en ergō kai alētheia | ”not in word … but in deed and truth” | contrast between verbal claim and enacted reality | not in word only, but in deed and truth | Programmatic statement that love in 1 John is defined by concrete action, not sentiment or speech | tsis yog los ntawm lus xwb, tiamsis yog los ntawm kev ua tiag thiab qhov tseeb — Low, reusing TM truth: qhov tseeb exactly. |
| heart condemns / does not condemn | καταγινώσκῃ ἡ καρδία | kataginōskē hē kardia | ”the heart condemns/accuses” | inner self-accusation | our heart condemns us / does not condemn us | NEW TERM — Medium (Assurance doctrine). Assurance before God is tied to, yet distinguished from, the inner court of conscience — God is greater than a condemning heart (3:20) | lub siab liam — Medium. Positive continuity with TM’s conscience entry (Romans #29, “tej kev paub zoo paub phem hauv lub siab”), extending the siab-as-moral-seat idiom already established. |
| confidence (toward God) | παρρησίαν | parrēsian | as 4:17 | as above | confidence, boldness | kev txaus siab tsis ntshai — Medium, reuse. | |
| keep His commandments / believe on the name of His Son / love one another | τὴν ἐντολὴν αὐτοῦ τηρῶμεν, … πιστεύσωμεν τῷ ὀνόματι … καὶ ἀγαπῶμεν | — | — | summary triad of commandment | keep commandments; believe on the name; love one another | The single commandment (ἐντολή, singular collective) unpacked as a двух-part unity: right belief + right love | Reuses TM faith/believe: kev ntseeg/ntseeg and established kwvtij-love vocabulary; Low, consistent reuse. |
Chapter 4 (4:1-6) — Testing the Spirits (verses 4:7-21 already treated in Part A)
Doctrines touched: Testing the Spirits (primary, entirely contained in this sub-section); The Incarnation and Antichrist.
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| test the spirits δοκιμάζετε τὰ πνεύματα dokimazete ta pneumata ”test/examine/assay the spirits” | metallurgical-testing metaphor (assaying metal for genuineness) applied to discerning the source of prophetic/teaching claims test the spirits, examine the spirits, discern the spirits | NEW TERM — Critical (Testing the Spirits doctrine, primary term). A doctrinal-content test (does the spirit’s message confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh?), not an experiential or sensory test of supernatural presence | sim cov ntsuj plig — Critical. Direct, high-stakes collision with the core function of the Hmong shaman (txiv neeb), whose entire ritual role is discerning, identifying, and negotiating with spirits (dab) through trance, divination, and spirit-communication techniques. If “testing the spirits” is heard through this lens, believers risk seeking a shamanic discernment technique (trance, divination, sensory/experiential confirmation) rather than applying John’s actual test, which is entirely doctrinal-propositional: does the spirit’s message affirm that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh (4:2-3)? Mandatory disambiguating teaching note, non-negotiable at every occurrence: the test is a creedal-content test applied to teaching, never a ritual or experiential spirit-discernment technique; believers are never to engage the spirits directly (as a txiv neeb would) but to evaluate the doctrine proclaimed. |
| confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh ὁμολογεῖ Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα homologei Iēsoun Christon en sarki elēlythota ”confesses Jesus Christ having come in flesh” | creedal affirmation of the genuine incarnation confesses Jesus Christ come/come in the flesh | NEW TERM — Critical (Incarnation and Antichrist doctrine, primary term). The positive doctrinal criterion distinguishing the Spirit of God from every deceiving spirit: full acknowledgment of the real, bodily incarnation | lees paub tias Yexus Khetos twb los ua neeg thiab muaj lub cev nqaij tawv tiag tiag — Critical. This is the single most doctrinally load-bearing clause in the whole epistle for the Incarnation doctrine. Two compounded risks: (1) reuses TM’s flesh_neutral_descent_body: lub cev nqaij tawv (Critical, Romans #23) correctly for the neutral, physical-body sense — this must NOT drift toward the moral sense (flesh_moral_sinful_nature, Romans #24), since Christ’s taking on a genuine human body carries no sinful nature; (2) direct collision risk with Hmong spirit-mediumship (txiv neeb channeling), where a spirit “comes upon” or temporarily indwells a human host during trance — this could distort “Christ came in the flesh” into a temporary spirit-visitation/possession event rather than a permanent, unique, ontological union of full deity and full humanity in one Person from conception onward. Mandatory teaching note required at every occurrence: the incarnation is once, permanent, and constitutes an actual human nature genuinely united to the divine Person — not a temporary indwelling/channeling episode. |
| spirit of truth / spirit of error τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας / τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς πλάνης to pneuma tēs alētheias / to pneuma tēs planēs ”the spirit of the truth” / “the spirit of the wandering/deception” | source-attribution for inspired speech: the Holy Spirit vs. a deceiving spirit Spirit of truth; spirit of error/deceit | NEW TERM — Critical (Testing the Spirits doctrine). Binary source-taxonomy for all prophetic/teaching claims in the church | Vaj Ntsuj Plig qhov tseeb / ib yam ntsuj plig dag ntxias — Critical. The “Spirit of truth” here IS the Holy Spirit and mandatorily retains the Vaj prefix (TM Critical rule, Romans #5) — it must never be rendered with bare ntsuj plig. Conversely, the “spirit of error” is a deceiving, non-divine spirit and by the same TM logic must NEVER receive the Vaj prefix; this analysis recommends the descriptive phrase ib yam ntsuj plig dag ntxias (“a spirit of deception”) rather than a bare noun, to avoid two further risks: (a) implying such spirits are merely alternate human souls (the anthropological ntsuj plig sense, TM #6) rather than personal deceiving spiritual beings; (b) implying they belong to the neutral/ambiguous folk-spirit (dab) category that might be respected or placated rather than firmly identified as false and to be rejected. [TRANSLATOR REVIEW NEEDED: confirm whether “dab dag ntxias” (using the dab root explicitly) more precisely signals “false/demonic spirit” to a Hmong reader than “ntsuj plig dag ntxias” — native-speaker and theologian input required before this becomes a permanent TM entry.] |
| overcome (them) νενικήκατε αὐτούς nenikēkate autous ”you have overcome them” | as ch.2, ch.5 you have overcome them | Believers’ doctrinal fidelity constitutes victory over the false-spirit-inspired teachers | yeej lawv lawm — Medium, reuse. |
| he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world μείζων ἐστὶν ὁ ἐν ὑμῖν ἢ ὁ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ meizōn estin ho en hymin ē ho en tō kosmō ”greater is the one in you than the one in the world” | comparative-power statement greater is He who is in you | Grounds the assurance of victory in the indwelling Spirit’s superior power, not the believer’s own discernment skill | Reuses TM world: lub ntiajteb (Low) and the abiding/indwelling vocabulary (nyob ruaj nrees hauv, High) established above. |
Chapter 5 (5:1-21) — Born of God, Overcoming Faith, Witnesses, Assurance, Idols
Doctrines touched: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth; Overcoming the World (primary, fullest development); Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life (primary, fullest development); God is Light and God is Love (closing echo); The Incarnation and Antichrist (closing echo, water/blood witness).
| Term | Greek | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Hmong rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| born of God (believing Jesus is the Christ) | γεγέννηται / γεγεννηκότα | gegennētai / gegennēkota | as 4:7 | as above | born of God, has begotten | Restates the new-birth doctrine, now explicitly tied to the confession “Jesus is the Christ” as its identifying mark | yug los ntawm Vajtswv — Critical, reuse (see 4:7 dedicated note). |
| love him who begat / love his child | ἀγαπῶν τὸν γεννήσαντα … ἀγαπᾷ [καὶ] τὸν γεγεννημένον | agapōn ton gennēsanta … agapa [kai] ton gegennēmenon | ”loving the one who begat … loves the one begotten” | familial-love-logic argument: love for the Father entails love for His other children | loves the Father, loves His child | Argues from family logic (love the parent, therefore love the parent’s other children) to ground brotherly love in shared new birth | Reuses kev hlub (TM) and yug los ntawm Vajtswv (Critical, above); no new lexical item, but the argument-structure itself is a load-bearing teaching point requiring explicit unpacking. |
| commandments not burdensome | αἱ ἐντολαὶ αὐτοῦ βαρεῖαι οὐκ εἰσίν | hai entolai autou bareiai ouk eisin | ”His commandments are not heavy/burdensome” | contrasts with a legalistic, crushing view of obedience | His commandments are not burdensome | Obedience flowing from new birth and love is not experienced as crushing legal weight — echoes the grace-not-works logic of the Romans TM’s grace entry (Critical) | nws tej lus samhwm tsis hnyav — Low-Medium, reusing tej lus samhwm (established above). |
| overcome the world | νικᾷ τὸν κόσμον | nika ton kosmon | ”conquers/overcomes the world” | victorious defeat, this time explicitly of “the world” as a hostile system | overcomes the world, conquers the world | NEW TERM — Medium (Overcoming the World doctrine, fullest statement). The believer’s new birth itself is the source of world-overcoming power, and faith is identified as the specific means/weapon of that victory (5:4b) | yeej lub ntiajteb — Medium, reusing TM world: lub ntiajteb (Low) plus the established yeej (“overcome/win”) verb. Comprehension-level risk: must be taught that “the world” here denotes the God-opposing value-system, not the physical creation (TM’s neutral creation: tej uas raug tsim los, Romans #35, is a distinct, non-hostile referent) nor a literal territorial or spiritual domain to be defeated by ritual power (avoiding any drift toward the hwjchim/shamanic-power collision documented in the Romans TM, Critical concern #62, even though “hwjchim” itself is not the lexeme used here). |
| victory | ἡ νίκη | hē nikē | ”the victory” | noun-form of νικάω | the victory | NEW TERM — Low-Medium. | kev yeej — Low-Medium. |
| faith (as the means of victory) | ἡ πίστις ἡμῶν | hē pistis hēmōn | ”our faith” | as Romans TM #16 | our faith | Faith, not ritual power or technique, is identified as the specific instrument of overcoming the world | peb txoj kev ntseeg — Low, reuse of TM exactly. |
| water and blood (and Spirit) — three witnesses | τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ τὸ αἷμα … τὸ πνεῦμα | to hydōr kai to haima … to pneuma | ”the water and the blood … the Spirit” | threefold witness to the truth about Jesus Christ, commonly connected to His baptism, death, and the Spirit’s ongoing testimony | water, blood, and Spirit as three witnesses | NEW TERM — Medium. A triadic testimony structure paralleling courtroom multiple-witness requirements, confirming Christ’s identity against the antichrist-error of ch.2 and 4 | dej thiab ntshav thiab Vaj Ntsuj Plig — Medium. Requires connective teaching to TM’s baptism: kev cai raus dej (High, Romans #45) for the “water” referent and to propitiation/atonement vocabulary for “blood,” while the Vaj Ntsuj Plig prefix is mandatorily retained for the third witness. |
| testimony/witness of God | ἡ μαρτυρία τοῦ θεοὺ | hē martyria tou theou | ”the testimony of God” | as TM witness (Romans #72) | the testimony/witness of God | God’s own testimony concerning His Son is greater than any human testimony | Vajtswv tej lus timkhawv — Low, reuse. |
| has the Son / does not have the Son | ἔχων τὸν υἱὸν … ὁ μὴ ἔχων τὸν υἱὸν | echōn ton huion … ho mē echōn ton huion | ”having the Son … not having the Son” | possession-metaphor for union with Christ, determining possession or non-possession of life | has the Son, does not have the Son | Union with Christ (cf. Romans TM in_christ_union_formula, High) restated as a binary possession-of-life category | Reuses Leej Tub ntawm Vajtswv (Low, TM) and eternal_life (Low, TM); the possession-metaphor itself is Low-Medium, transparent. |
| know that you have eternal life | εἰδῆτε ὅτι ζωὴν ἔχετε αἰώνιον | eidēte hoti zōēn echete aiōnion | ”that you may know that you have eternal life” | οἶδα (factual/settled knowing, distinct from the relational γινώσκω used elsewhere) | know that you have eternal life | Assurance of Salvation doctrine, thesis statement (5:13). The epistle’s stated purpose: settled, confident, present-tense knowledge (not hope or guess) of possessing eternal life now | kom nej paub tseeb tias nej twb muaj txoj sia nyob mus ib txhis lawm — Medium-High. Risk: assurance-of-salvation teaching must clearly distinguish this settled, Scripture-grounded knowledge from any fatalistic or divinatory “knowing one’s fortune” framework (hmoov-adjacent thinking, per the Romans TM’s election_choose Critical concern) — assurance here rests on God’s revealed testimony and the believer’s present faith-relation to the Son, not on a fatalistically-read sign or omen. |
| confidence (in prayer, according to His will) | παρρησίαν … κατὰ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ | parrēsian … kata to thelēma autou | ”boldness … according to His will” | as above, applied specifically to prayer | confidence in prayer | Reuses kev txaus siab tsis ntshai (Medium, established) and TM’s will_of_god: Vajtswv lub siab nyiam (Medium, Romans #77) exactly. | |
| sin unto death / not unto death | ἁμαρτίαν πρὸς θάνατον … μὴ πρὸς θάνατον | hamartian pros thanaton … mē pros thanaton | ”sin toward death … not toward death” | a distinction in the severity/character of sin relative to physical or spiritual death | sin leading to death / sin not leading to death | NEW TERM — Medium. A pastorally delicate category (traditionally associated with apostate, unrepentant sin) requiring careful, non-speculative teaching, distinct from ordinary sins believers commit and confess (1:9) | kev txhaum uas coj mus rau txoj kev tuag / kev txhaum uas tsis coj mus rau txoj kev tuag — Medium. Reuses TM death and sin exactly; risk is doctrinal-pastoral precision (avoiding speculative identification of specific unforgivable sins) rather than a traditional-religion collision. |
| we are of God / the whole world lies in the evil one | ἡμεῖς ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐσμεν … ὁ κόσμος ὅλος ἐν τῷ πονηρῷ κεῖται | hēmeis ek tou theou esmen … ho kosmos holos en tō ponērō keitai | ”we are of God … the whole world lies in the evil one” | summary contrast of two spheres of belonging/dominion | we are of God; the whole world lies in the evil one | Final summary contrast reusing tus limhiam (Medium-High, established under ch.2/3) and TM’s world (Low). | |
| understanding (to know Him who is true) | διάνοιαν | dianoian | ”understanding, capacity for comprehension” | the God-given capacity to know the true God, in contrast to idols | understanding, mind | NEW TERM — Low. | kev totaub / lub siab paub — Low. |
| keep yourselves from idols | φυλάξατε ἑαυτὰ ἀπὸ τῶν εἰδώλων | phylaxate heauta apo tōn eidōlōn | ”guard yourselves from the idols” | closing exhortation | keep yourselves from idols | The epistle’s closing word directly reuses TM’s idol: dab mlom (High risk, Romans #32) exactly, with the added exhortational verb “guard/keep” | ceev faj tsis txhob pehawm dab mlom — High, reuse of TM idol term exactly, combined with the mandatory anchoring already established for TM’s worship_serve_cultic: pehawm (High, Romans #71 — object must always be stated). This closing verse is a fitting doctrinal bookend: the entire epistle’s call to exclusive fellowship with, confession of, love from, and assurance in the true God culminates in a direct warning against reverting to idol-worship — the single most explicit traditional-religion collision point in the whole book, and the baseline for this Language Package’s forbidden-substitution list must inherit both the Romans TM’s idol/worship qualifiers unmodified. |
Summary of Newly Surfaced Critical/High-Risk Collision Points (for 08_core_glossary.md and future doctrine-risk registry work)
- Born of God / children of God (γεννάω, τέκνα θεοῦ) — Critical. New collision class: Hmong reincarnation/multi-soul belief, not previously documented in the Romans baseline.
- Abide/remain (μένω) — High. Parallel to but distinct from Romans’ en Christō formula; risk of a spatial or mediumship-adjacent misreading without the “ruaj nrees” qualifier.
- Testing the spirits (δοκιμάζετε τὰ πνεύματα) / spirit of truth vs. spirit of error — Critical. Direct collision with the shaman’s (txiv neeb) core ritual function of spirit-discernment.
- Christ come in the flesh (ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα) — Critical. Collision with spirit-mediumship/channeling (temporary spirit-indwelling of a human host) as opposed to a permanent incarnational union.
- Devil / Ntxwg Nyoog (διάβολος) — High. Risk of conflating the singular, defeated personal enemy with the broader, still-to-be-appeased dab spirit category.
- Advocate/Paraclete applied to Christ (παράκλητος) — High. Risk of conflating Christ’s heavenly intercession with shamanic ritual intermediation.
- Anointing (χρῖσμα) — High. Risk of a magical-substance/protective-charm misreading.
- Cleanse/purify (καθαρίζω, ἁγνίζω) — High. Extends the Romans-documented sanctification/ritual-purity collision to two additional lexemes.
These eight items should be formally proposed for inclusion in a assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json and assets/translation_memory.json extension in the next Phase (TM-revision review), per the governing note in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §10.
