Welcome to the Library

What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Cross-Reference Analysis

Galatians — Cross-Reference Analysis (Hmong Language Package)

§0. Governing Conventions and Citation Normalization

This document extends, and never contradicts, the Hmong Romans Language Package baseline and the Galatians 07_semantic_analysis.md / 08_core_glossary.md deliverables. All Hmong term renderings cited below are reused verbatim from those documents; no new lexical choices are introduced here except where explicitly marked NEW for a quotation-text rendering-consistency rule.

Citation normalization (for this analysis artifact): Per the task specification, all citations in this document use the normalizable English-style form Book chapter:verse (e.g., Galatians 2:16, Genesis 15:6) so that references can be mapped programmatically across curricula. This is distinct from the destination-language citation convention used in actual generated Hmong curriculum content, which follows the pattern established in the Romans baseline (12_ai_translation_requirements.md §7: Loos [chapter]:[verse]). For Galatians, the parallel destination-language convention is established here as:

  • Destination-language book name for Galatians: Kalatias (established transliteration, consistent with the “Loos” pattern for Romans and other transliterated proper names already fixed in the TM, e.g. Yudas, Kilis, Anplahas, Yixalayees).
  • Full epistolary title convention (first reference in any lesson): Tsab Ntawv uas Povlauj Sau rau Cov Ntseeg hauv Cheeb Tsam Kalatias (“The Letter Paul Wrote to the Believers in the Region of Galatia”), abbreviated thereafter to Kalatias.
  • Chapter:verse format: Kalatias [chapter]:[verse], e.g. Kalatias 2:16, following the same hyphenation and cross-chapter-range rules as the Romans baseline (Loos [chapter]:[verse]).
  • OT book names in generated Hmong content should follow the existing Hmong Bible tradition (Vaj Lug Kub Npaiv Npaum / HWB) transliterations already in use in that translation (e.g., Genesis = “Chiv Keeb,” Deuteronomy = “Kevcai,” Leviticus = “Levi Kevcai,” Habakkuk = “Hanpakhu,” Isaiah = “Yaxaya,” Psalm = “Ntawv Nkauj”), not invented anew; this document references them only in normalized English form for cross-referencing purposes.

Risk tiers below follow the definitions in bible_term_registry.json’s registry_metadata.risk_tier_definitions (Critical/High/Medium/Low), applied to the cross-reference/typological handling of each passage, not merely to its lexical terms (which retain their tiers as already fixed in 07_semantic_analysis.md/08_core_glossary.md).

§2. Messianic References, Typology, and Cross-Curriculum Convergences

2.1 Messianic references and typology internal to Galatians

  1. Christ as the singular “Seed” of Abraham (Galatians 3:16, drawing on Genesis 12:7; 13:15; 17:7-8; 22:18; background 2 Samuel 7:12-14) — Paul’s grammatical argument (singular sperma, not plural) identifies Christ personally as the fulfillment-point of the Abrahamic promise, later extended (3:29) to all who are “in Christ.” Risk: High. Must preserve the singular/plural distinction in Hmong via classifier choice (tus noob vs. cov noob) exactly as fixed in 07_semantic_analysis.md.
  2. Christ “became a curse for us” by being “hanged on a tree” (Galatians 3:13, quoting Deuteronomy 21:23) — the direct fulfillment-typology of the letter, paralleling Romans’ propitiation doctrine (hilastērion, Romans baseline Critical #37) but through the covenant-curse image rather than the mercy-seat image. Risk: Critical. Teaching must show these are two complementary Scriptural pictures of the same single atoning event, never two separate atonements, and never allow the “curse” image to be assimilated to Hmong ritual curse-removal practices (see 07_semantic_analysis.md “Curse of the Law”).
  3. Isaac as the child of promise, typologically prefiguring believers “born according to the Spirit” (Galatians 4:28-29, drawing on Genesis 21:1-21) — Isaac/Ishmael typology is explicitly named by Paul as “allegory” (4:24); it is his own apostolic typological reading of a historical narrative, not an invented fable. Risk: Medium, comprehension-level; teaching note required per 07_semantic_analysis.md “Allegory.”
  4. Christ “born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4) — a minimal, non-quotational allusion sometimes homiletically connected to Genesis 3:15’s “her offspring.” This connection is optional and supplementary, not a formal citation Paul makes; it should be flagged as a permitted but non-mandatory teaching illustration, never presented as if Paul himself makes the Genesis 3:15 connection explicit. Risk: Low, provided this distinction is maintained.
  5. The Law as a temporary custodial guardian (paidagōgos) “until Christ came” (Galatians 3:23-25) — typologically parallels Israel’s minority/wilderness period under Torah tutelage until the promised “seed” arrives; directly connects to Romans 10:4’s “Christ is the end (telos) of the law.” Risk: Medium-High, comprehension gap as documented in 07_semantic_analysis.md.

2.2 Cross-curriculum convergences with the Hmong Romans Language Package (special attention required)

The following points are direct doctrinal or lexical overlaps between Galatians and Romans requiring coordinated, non-contradictory teaching across both curricula:

  1. Galatians 2:16 ↔ Romans 3:20, 28 — near-identical “works of the law” / justification-by-faith formula. The Hmong rendering of “works of the law” (tej haujlwm ntawm Txoj Kevcai (ntawm Vajtswv / Mauxes)) is a Galatians-curriculum NEW entry with no prior Romans TM record (Romans uses the concept diffusely but never fixes this exact compound); it must now be treated as a permanent TM candidate applicable retroactively to any future Romans-curriculum revision referencing “works of the law.”
  2. Galatians 4:6 ↔ Romans 8:15-16 — the “Abba, Father” cry of the Spirit is worded almost identically in both letters. The Hmong rendering must be character-for-character identical in both curricula (Abba, Leej Txiv, reusing Romans baseline #51 exactly), including the associated footnote convention.
  3. Galatians 2:19-20, 5:24 ↔ Romans 6:6 — “crucified with Christ” is Paul’s own repeated formula, not merely a shared theme. The Galatians-curriculum NEW rendering raug ntsia nrog Khetos rau tus Ntoo Khaublig should be treated as the definitive Hmong-TM rendering for this formula wherever it recurs, including in any future Romans-curriculum revision of Romans 6:6.
  4. Galatians 6:16 (“Israel of God”) ↔ Romans 9:6, 11:26 (“all Israel will be saved”) — these must be taught in careful, non-contradictory tension: Romans 11:26-29 anchors a future, corporate salvation of ethnic/national Israel grounded in God’s irrevocable covenant call; Galatians 6:16’s “Israel of God” is exegetically ambiguous (see 08_core_glossary.md) and could be read either as the whole believing church or as believing ethnic Israel specifically. This document does not adjudicate the ambiguity; it flags the requirement that no Phase 2 content resolve Galatians 6:16 in a way that contradicts or forecloses the Romans-curriculum’s carefully-anchored treatment of Romans 11:26-29. Mandatory human theologian review at first joint curriculum use.
  5. Galatians 4:8-9 (elemental spirits, idolatry) ↔ Romans 1:18-25 (idols, dab mlom) — both describe the same underlying reality (worship misdirected from the true God to false objects/beings) using different vocabulary (tej yam pib xyaum ntawm lub ntiajteb no vs. dab mlom). Teaching should explicitly connect the two without merging the lexical items themselves, since Galatians’ “elemental spirits” is deliberately rendered without dab-vocabulary (see 07_semantic_analysis.md) while Romans’ “idol” deliberately retains it.
  6. Galatians 3:10, 13 (curse of the law) ↔ Romans 4:15 (“the law brings wrath”) — parallel negative-function-of-the-Law statements; must be taught as two facets of the single doctrine “The Law’s Purpose” (Galatians curriculum) / “The Law and Its Purpose” (Romans curriculum doctrine #5), not as competing formulations.
  7. Galatians 3:28 ↔ Romans 10:12 — “no distinction between Jew and Greek” language; Romans’ version is soteriological-access-focused (10:12-13, “everyone who calls…”), Galatians’ version is status/inheritance-focused (3:28-29, “heirs according to promise”); both must retain qhev (baseline High #10) with its full catechetical fencing wherever the “slave nor free” clause of the unity formula recurs.

§3. Rendering-Consistency Rules for Quotations and Formulas Shared with the Romans Curriculum

The following table isolates every direct Old Testament quotation, or fixed apostolic formula, that appears in both the Romans and Galatians curricula. For each, the underlying Hmong-TM terms governing the quotation’s key vocabulary are already fixed by the Romans baseline; this section makes explicit the rule that the same key-term renderings must be reused inside the full quotation text wherever it is translated, in either curriculum, so that a reader encountering the same verse cited from two different epistles never perceives two different translations of the same Scripture.

OT/NT TextOccurrencesKey TM Term(s) InvolvedRendering-Consistency Rule
Genesis 15:6 — “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”Romans 4:3, 9, 22; Galatians 3:6kev ntseeg (faith, baseline #16); suav / suav tias (reckon/impute, baseline Critical #40); ncaj ncees (righteous, within #25/#26 fencing)The quotation must always read: “…suav tias ncaj ncees rau nws” — never a bare ncaj ncees without the reckoning verb, in either curriculum, per the Romans baseline’s mandatory qualifier-pairing rule (§2 of 12_ai_translation_requirements.md).
Habakkuk 2:4 — “the righteous shall live by faith”Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11tus ncaj ncees (the righteous one, #25); kev ntseeg (#16); muaj txoj sia (live, ties to eternal_life #47 / death #44 word-field)This is the letter’s thesis-verse in Romans (1:17) and a load-bearing proof-text in Galatians (3:11); the Hmong wording of the quotation itself must be identical string-for-string across both curricula — no stylistic variation permitted, per the Romans baseline’s “no stylistic variation for fixed collocations” rule (§5 of 12_ai_translation_requirements.md).
Leviticus 18:5 — “the one who does them shall live by them”Romans 10:5; Galatians 3:12Txoj Kevcai (ntawm Vajtswv / Mauxes) (mandatory Law qualifier, #27); descriptive “ua raws” (do/perform)Both occurrences function identically in Paul’s argument (naming the law’s-own-principle of “do and live,” contrasted with faith’s principle of “believe and live”); the Hmong translation of this verse must be identical in both curricula, and the mandatory Law qualifier must never be dropped even mid-quotation.
Leviticus 19:18 — “love your neighbor as yourself”Romans 13:9; Galatians 5:14kev hlub (love, baseline #new, Low)Identical quotation wording required in both curricula; note the doctrinal framing differs slightly (Romans: love fulfills specific commandments; Galatians: love fulfills “the whole law,” 5:14) — this is a legitimate difference in Paul’s surrounding argument, not a translation inconsistency, and must be preserved via context/teaching notes rather than by altering the quotation text itself.
Romans 8:15-16 / Galatians 4:6 — “Abba! Father!” cry of the SpiritRomans 8:15-16; Galatians 4:6Abba, Leej Txiv (baseline #51, Low-Medium)Not an OT quotation but a repeated apostolic formula; must be rendered identically, including the first-use footnote convention, in both curricula.
Deuteronomy 21:23 — “cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”Galatians 3:13 only (no Romans occurrence)kev raug foom tsis zoo (raws li Txoj Kevcai) (curse of the law, NEW entry)No cross-curriculum consistency rule needed (unique to Galatians), but the teaching note must explicitly cross-reference Romans’ propitiation_atoning_sacrifice (Critical #37) as the complementary image of the same atoning event, per §2.1 above — the two must never be taught as separate atoning mechanisms.

Governing principle: Wherever a future Phase 2 generation task requires quoting or paraphrasing any of the above OT texts in either the Romans or Galatians Hmong curriculum, the generator MUST check this table first and reuse the fixed key-term renderings exactly; any perceived need for a different rendering triggers [TRANSLATOR REVIEW NEEDED: cross-curriculum quotation consistency] rather than an ad hoc substitution.

§4. Translation Sensitivity Legend

  • Critical — direct doctrinal load-bearing cross-reference with a documented collision risk (traditional religion) or cross-curriculum consistency requirement; mandatory human theologian review.
  • High — significant doctrinal weight or a named cross-curriculum tension (e.g., Israel of God / all Israel will be saved) requiring careful, non-foreclosing teaching; mandatory human theologian review.
  • Medium-High / Medium — comprehension-level typological or narrative gap, or a real but manageable doctrinal nuance; native-speaker review at minimum, escalate if doctrinal ambiguity is suspected.
  • Low-Medium / Low — stable, well-attested parallel or allusion with minimal ambiguity; automated review sufficient, but log new contexts for the next TM-revision cycle.
