What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Doctrine Analysis

Matthew — Doctrine Analysis (Hmong Language Package)

This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4/5 doctrine-matrix analysis for the full book of Matthew (chapters 1–28), anchored theologically in the core passage Matthew 5:1-12 (the Beatitudes) but scoped to the entire book per the full-book-coverage mandate. Part A presents the doctrine matrix, held strictly consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — same nine doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. Part B presents the mandatory chapter-by-chapter coverage log: every chapter of Matthew is explicitly accounted for, with chapters contributing no new doctrine-bearing material logged as “reviewed” rather than silently omitted, per the convention established in the Romans baseline package.

Translation Risk Descriptions (full text, verbatim-consistent with registry)

1. The Kingdom of Heaven (Critical). Two collision points converge on this doctrine’s core text, the Beatitudes (5:3-12). First, lub Nceeg Vaj Saum Ntuj Ceeb Tsheej (kingdom of heaven) risks being heard as a merely locative afterlife destination rather than God’s present-and-future reign breaking into history through Jesus. Second, and more severely, the Beatitudes’ signature pronouncement makarios (blessed) has no safe unqualified Hmong equivalent: the natural candidate koob hmoov denotes fortune/blessing granted by ancestors, spirits, or cosmic forces contingent on ritual correctness — the identical fatalistic collision the Romans baseline permanently forbids for grace and election. The mandatory ntawm Vajtswv qualifier is non-negotiable at every occurrence, including across the seven kingdom parables of ch.13 and the judgment parables of ch.25.

2. Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David (Critical). The dynastic title tus Tub ntawm Daviv Vajntxwv (Son of David) draws on Hmong clan-lineage custom for positive resonance but risks reduction to ordinary genealogical pride absent covenant-kingship teaching. More seriously, worship-scenes recognizing Jesus’ identity (2:11; 14:33; 28:9,17) use pe hawm (proskyneō) — identical to pe hawm dab, ancestral/household-spirit veneration. The object must always be stated explicitly and contrasted with pe hawm dab, or the church’s central Christological confession collapses into ordinary spirit-veneration.

3. Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy (High). The recurring fulfillment formula risks being heard as coincidental prediction-matching rather than God’s sovereign follow-through on his own covenant word. tus cev Vajtswv lus (prophet) risks assimilation into the existing category of shamanic diviners (txiv neeb, txiv xaiv) who likewise claim to relay spirit-messages; explicit distinguishing teaching is required at every occurrence of both “prophet” (2:5; 13:57) and “false prophet” (7:15; 24:11,24).

4. The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching (Critical). This doctrine depends entirely on exousia, rendered with the flagged term hwjchim — identical to a shaman’s ritual power to negotiate with spirits. Matthew presents a third sense beyond the baseline’s general/civil senses: authority Jesus possesses inherently, neither delegated nor ritually negotiated (7:29; 9:6; 21:23-27; culminating in 28:18). Without the mandatory extended qualifier at every occurrence, hearers risk concluding Jesus is simply a more powerful shaman rather than the divine Son whose word is self-authenticating — this directly undergirds the “you have heard… but I say to you” formula (5:21-48), which sets Jesus’ word alongside/above the Law.

5. Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees (Critical). Matthew reuses the flagged Critical term ncaj ncees in a distinct ethical/practical sense (5:20; 6:33) rather than the forensic-imputation sense governed by the baseline’s mandatory reckoning-qualifier. Hmong customary morality treats ncaj ncees as an achieved quality earned through visibly correct conduct — precisely the externally-performed righteousness (tithing, fasting, public prayer, ch.6; Pharisaic tradition, ch.15, 23) Jesus contrasts with heart-level integrity (5:8). Without careful disambiguation, this doctrine risks collapsing into works-righteousness or a merely comparative moral achievement.

6. The Church and Church Discipline (High). pawg ntseeg is lexically stable, but the doctrine combines two further risks: the rabbinic “bind and loose” idiom (16:19; 18:18) has no native Hmong equivalent and requires substantial teaching; and the discipline procedure of 18:15-17 maps very naturally onto real Hmong clan/community-expulsion custom, risking collapse of Matthew’s restoration-aimed discipline into a purely punitive clan-justice framework.

7. The Great Commission (Critical). 28:18-20 is the highest term-density risk passage outside the Beatitudes, combining four flagged terms: the Christological-authority sense of hwjchim at its fullest extent; the kevcai-rooted baptism term, taught as identification with the Triune name rather than repeatable ritual purification; the absolutely mandatory Vaj prefix on Vaj Ntsuj Plig at the point where dropping it is most theologically catastrophic; and txhua haiv neeg (all nations), kept distinguishable from the baseline’s contrastive lwm Haiv Neeg. This convergence requires escalated, combined-unit theologian review.

8. Judgment and the End of the Age (High). 25:46 deliberately parallels “eternal punishment” against “eternal life”; softening the punishment term would blunt the intended grammatical parallelism. Separately, “the coming of the Son of Man” (parousia, ch.24) risks assimilation into Hmong beliefs about ancestor-spirits “returning” or being ritually summoned, absent an explicit comprehension-level contrast note.

9. Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus (High). 10:37 and 8:22 create direct collision with Hmong filial-piety and ancestor-honor custom, in which loyalty to parents/clan and ritual burial obligations are among the most sacred social duties. Without a carefully constructed teaching note distinguishing reordered ultimate allegiance from denigration of filial duty, this doctrine risks being heard as culturally impossible, or — if obeyed without nuance — as license to abandon core family obligations, needlessly alienating converts’ families.

Governing Notes

  1. This doctrine matrix is held in strict lexical and tier consistency with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json; no doctrine, risk tier, or routing decision here contradicts that registry.
  2. Every doctrine in this Language Package is Critical or High risk, consistent with the pattern established in the Romans baseline — there is no Medium/Low-risk doctrine in this curriculum, and therefore every doctrine requires human theologian review before publication with no automated-review bypass.
  3. Doctrines 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 (Critical tier) carry the highest escalation priority; Doctrines 3, 6, 8, and 9 (High tier) are also mandatorily routed to human theologian review, not merely native-speaker review, per the same convention established in the Romans baseline governing document.
  4. The core passage (Matthew 5:1-12) is the theological anchor for this Language Package but is never treated as the scope boundary; full-book coverage above demonstrates doctrine-bearing material recurring and developing across all 28 chapters.
