Doctrine Analysis
John — Doctrine Analysis
This document has two parts, per the PRD full-book-coverage mandate:
- Part A — the doctrine matrix: all nine doctrines assigned to this curriculum, each with its full-book supporting-passage set (not limited to the core passage, John 3:1-21), risk level, translation-risk description, and review routing. Risk levels here are identical to
assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json— this document elaborates, it never re-tiers. - Part B — the chapter-by-chapter coverage log, John 1–21, confirming that every chapter has been reviewed for doctrinal and terminological content. Chapters contributing no new term or doctrinal risk beyond what is already logged are explicitly marked “Reviewed — no new item” rather than silently omitted.
Part A — Doctrine Matrix (Full Book)
1. The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
- Risk level: Critical
- Review routing: human theologian
- Supporting passages (full book): John 1:1-3, 1:14, 1:18; 3:13, 3:31; 5:18, 5:23; 6:38, 6:62; 8:23, 8:42, 8:58; 10:30, 10:33-36; 11:25 (implicit, via I AM); 12:41 (Isaiah’s vision of Christ’s glory); 13:19; 14:9-11; 16:28; 17:5, 17:24; 20:28.
- Translation risk description: The Prologue’s threefold claim (1:1 — the Word was with God, distinct in person; the Word was God, one in essence; all things were made through him, active co-Creator) is the doctrinal anchor for every later pre-existence and equality claim in the book (3:13, 5:18, 8:58, 17:5).
Txoj Lus(the Word) must function as a fixed theological title, never softened tocov lus(ordinary words/speech) or to an honorific “highly favored envoy sent from God” framing, which is culturally available via Hmong clan-messenger and ancestor-spirit-intermediary categories but would flatten ontological pre-existence into delegated favor.Kuv Yog(8:58, the absolute “I AM”) is the single strongest textual deity-claim outside the Prologue and must retain the fixed I-AM formula (see Doctrine 6) rather than being smoothed into ordinary self-identification (“I am Jesus of Nazareth”). This doctrine converges with Doctrine 9 (Unity) at 5:18, 10:30, 14:9-11, and 17:5, and with Doctrine 8 at 1:29 (pre-existent Word becomes the sacrificial Lamb) — translators must track it across all these convergence points, not treat it as isolated to chapter 1. - Cross-reference: Core glossary J1 (Txoj Lus), J27 (Kuv Yog absolute), J46 (My Lord and my God).
2. The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
- Risk level: Critical
- Review routing: human theologian
- Supporting passages (full book): John 1:12-13; 3:3-8; 3:36; 6:63 (Spirit gives life, flesh profits nothing); 7:37-39 (Spirit not yet given); 20:22 (Christ breathes the Spirit on the disciples, echoing new creation/Genesis 2:7).
- Translation risk description:
yug dua tshiab(born again/from above, 3:3,7) is the core-passage’s central doctrinal term and the single highest collision risk in the entire curriculum. It must never stand alone; it must always co-occur with the qualifying phrase anchoring the birth’s agent aslos ntawm Vaj Ntsuj Plig(by the Holy Spirit, per the “Vaj” prefix rule inherited from Romans Doctrine 7/Election entries) to prevent assimilation into Hmong soul-cycling/rebirth cosmology and the ritual practice ofhu plig(calling a wandering soul back into a living body). The wind/Spirit wordplay (3:8,pneuma/pnei) is untranslatable in Hmong (no single lexeme covers both “wind” and “Spirit”); this must be flagged as a comprehension-level translator note, not silently smoothed over by picking one sense. 7:37-39’s “Spirit not yet given” and 20:22’s enactment must be taught as the fulfillment of 3:5-8’s promise, tying this doctrine’s full arc together across the book rather than confining it to chapter 3. - Cross-reference: Core glossary J7 (born again — flagged), J8 (born of water and Spirit), J9 (wind/Spirit wordplay — flagged).
3. Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
- Risk level: High
- Review routing: human theologian
- Supporting passages (full book): John 3:15-16, 3:36; 4:14; 5:24; 6:27, 6:35, 6:40, 6:47, 6:51, 6:54; 8:51; 10:10, 10:28; 11:25-26; 14:6, 14:19; 17:3; 20:31.
- Translation risk description:
txoj sia nyob mus ib txhisis lexically stable, but the doctrine’s decisive either/or structure — life versuspuas tsuaj/ploj mus(perish, 3:16; 10:28) — must be taught as a final, definitive, once-for-all outcome tied to a person’s present response to Christ (5:24, “has passed from death to life”), not as one negative turn within an ongoing cycle of existence or ancestral continuation.kev cawm dim(salvation), inherited High-risk from Romans, recurs constantly as the means by which eternal life is secured and must retain its mandatory anchor toYexus Khetosat every occurrence. 17:3’s definition of eternal life as knowing (relational, paub) the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent must not be reduced to mere doctrinal/factual head-knowledge, sincepaubin ordinary Hmong usage covers both senses and the relational-experiential sense must be foregrounded in teaching notes. - Cross-reference: Core glossary J14 (perish), J42 (know/ginōskō).
4. God’s Love for the World
- Risk level: High
- Review routing: human theologian
- Supporting passages (full book): John 3:16; 13:1, 13:34-35; 14:21-23; 15:9-13; 17:23-26; 21:15-17 (agapē/phileō exchange).
- Translation risk description:
kev hlubandlub ntiajtebare individually stable, low-collision terms, but the doctrine’s specific theological claim — that God’s love is unilateral, unmerited, and prior to any human response (3:16, “God so loved the world” before the world sought Him) — risks being read through the transactional logic of Hmong ancestor/spirit veneration, in which a spirit’s favor and protection are secured through correct ritual devotion, offerings, and honor paid to it, paralleling the already-documentedkoob hmoov/grace collision from the Romans baseline. Chapters 13–17’s repeated command to love “as I have loved you” (13:34; 15:12) must be taught as a response flowing from having already received unmerited love, never as the precondition for receiving it. The single-Hmong-term flattening ofagapaō/phileō(21:15-17) is a literary-nuance loss, not a doctrinal collision, and should be logged as a comprehension note rather than escalated. - Cross-reference: Core glossary J48 (agapē/phileō distinction — flagged, literary-nuance only).
5. Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
- Risk level: Critical
- Review routing: human theologian
- Supporting passages (full book): John 3:17-21, 3:36; 5:22-29; 7:24 (judging by appearances); 8:12, 8:15-16, 8:24; 9:39-41; 12:31, 12:46-48; 16:8-11.
- Translation risk description: The perfect-tense “already condemned” (3:18,
twb raug txiav txim lawm) establishes present, self-incurred, response-conditioned judgment — not an unalterable predetermined fate. Because Hmong cosmology contains a strong impersonal-fate concept (hmoov, already permanently forbidden for Romans’ election vocabulary), any teaching that lets 3:18’s “already” collapse into fatalistic destiny-language would strip unbelief of moral responsibility. The light/darkness dualism (3:19-21; 8:12; 9:39-41; 12:46) risks assimilation into Hmong folk-cosmology’s association of night/darkness with activedab(spirit) presence and danger, rather than John’s intended moral-spiritual dualism of revelation embraced versus revelation willfully rejected; this must be made explicit in teaching notes at every occurrence, not assumed to transfer automatically. The Spirit’s convicting work in 16:8-11 (concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment) must retain the Romans-inherited Critical-riskVajtswv txoj kev ncaj ncees(righteousness) qualifier so this triad is not read as three unrelated emotional states. - Cross-reference: Core glossary J12 (judgment/condemn), J13 (already condemned), J15 (light/darkness — flagged).
6. The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
- Risk level: Critical
- Review routing: human theologian
- Supporting passages (full book): John 6:35, 6:48 (bread of life); 8:12 (light of the world); 8:58 (absolute, unqualified I AM); 10:7, 10:9 (door); 10:11, 10:14 (good shepherd); 11:25 (resurrection and the life); 14:6 (way, truth, life); 15:1, 15:5 (true vine).
- Translation risk description: The fixed formula
Kuv Yog...must render every occurrence ofegō eimiidentically, both the seven metaphorical predications and the absolute, unqualified use at 8:58 (echoing the divine self-name of Exodus 3:14 LXX,egō eimi ho ōn). If the metaphorical statements are rendered or taught as ordinary illustrative comparison (“I am like bread,” “I am like a shepherd”) rather than as the same emphatic self-identification formula used absolutely at 8:58 and 13:19, the cumulative rhetorical strategy — seven veiled deity-claims building toward the unveiled claim — collapses into rabbinic teaching-metaphor. Each statement also carries its own secondary doctrinal freight (bread of life → Doctrine 3/8; light of the world → Doctrine 5; good shepherd → Doctrine 8, laying down life; resurrection and the life → Doctrine 3/8; way/truth/life → exclusivity of salvation, Doctrine 3) and must be cross-taught accordingly, not treated as isolated slogans. - Cross-reference: Core glossary J21, J24, J27 (flagged), J29, J30, J33, J36, J39.
7. The Holy Spirit as Counselor
- Risk level: Critical
- Review routing: human theologian
- Supporting passages (full book): John 3:5-8 (background); 7:37-39; 14:16-17, 14:26; 15:26; 16:7-15; 20:22.
- Translation risk description: The Paraclete, rendered
Vaj Ntsuj Plig, tus Pab Txhawb Nqa, is presented as a personal Helper/Advocate permanently given after Christ’s departure — a role-description that closely parallels Hmong household and personal guardian-spirit concepts, which are ritually fed, honored, and appeased to retain their protective aid, and which can be lost through ritual neglect or offense. Without explicit, repeated teaching that the Paraclete is the divine Third Person of the Godhead — freely and permanently indwelling (14:16, “forever”), never ritually maintained, never losable through ritual failure, and whose distinctive function is to testify to truth, convict of sin, and glorify Christ (15:26; 16:8-14) rather than provide generic household protection or fortune — hearers risk assimilating the Spirit’s ministry into the existing guardian-spirit framework. The mandatoryVajprefix (inherited Critical-risk rule from Romans Doctrine 7 and the Romans TM’s Holy Spirit entry) must never be dropped across chapters 14–16’s dense concentration of Paraclete sayings. - Cross-reference: Core glossary J37 (the Counselor/Paraclete — flagged).
8. Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
- Risk level: Critical
- Review routing: human theologian
- Supporting passages (full book): John 1:29, 1:36 (Lamb of God); 2:19-22 (temple-body resurrection prediction); 3:14-15 (lifted up, serpent typology); 6:51-56 (eat flesh/drink blood); 10:11, 10:17-18 (good shepherd lays down his life); 11:1-44 (Lazarus, foreshadowing); 12:23-24, 12:32-33 (grain of wheat; lifted up); 13:1 (hour has come); 18:1-19:16 (arrest and trials); 19:17-30 (crucifixion; “It is finished,” 19:30); 19:34 (blood and water); 20:1-29 (bodily resurrection appearances).
- Translation risk description: This doctrine converges the two highest-consequence collision points in the whole Gospel. First, sacrificial/substitutionary language (
Leej Menyuam Yaj ntawm Vajtswv, Lamb of God, 1:29; eating flesh/drinking blood, 6:53-56; “It is finished,”Tiav lawm, 19:30) reuses the domain of ritual blood-and-flesh offerings central to Hmong shamanic spirit-appeasement (fij dab) and must be explicitly taught, at every occurrence, as a once-for-all, sufficient, unrepeatable atoning act — directly extending the Romans-documentedhilastērion/propitiation entry’s mandatory contrast-teaching — never as one appeasement transaction among many or a repeatable sacramental re-offering. Second, Christ’s bodily resurrection (Ch. 20; also 2:19-22, 11:25) must be taught as categorically distinct from Hmong ancestor-veneration’s assumption that a deceased person’s spirit persists among the dead and must be ritually honored, fed, and periodically consulted; Christ’s resurrection is bodily, historical, publicly witnessed (20:24-29), unrepeatable, and results in Him being alive and active — not a spirit-presence to be ritually managed. This is arguably the single most consequential doctrinal-translation decision in the entire Gospel for a Hmong audience. - Cross-reference: Core glossary J3 (Lamb of God), J11 (lifted up — flagged), J16 (the hour), J22 (eat flesh/drink blood — flagged), J31 (lay down my life), J44 (It is finished — flagged), J45 (resurrection of Christ — flagged).
9. Unity of the Father and the Son
- Risk level: Critical
- Review routing: human theologian
- Supporting passages (full book): John 1:1-2, 1:18; 5:18-23; 8:19, 8:29; 10:30, 10:38; 12:44-45; 14:9-11, 14:20; 16:32; 17:11, 17:21-23; 20:28.
- Translation risk description:
kuv thiab Leej Txiv koom ua ib(I and the Father are one, 10:30) renders the Greek neuterhen— signaling essential, ontological unity of being between two distinct divine Persons, not mere agreement, alliance, or cooperative harmony. Hmong clan and family culture has a strong, positive existing idiom for people being “of one mind/heart” (koom ib lub siab) in relational, cooperative harmony; if this ontological claim is rendered or taught using only that relational-harmony register, it collapses into a claim about two separate beings cooperating well, undermining both this doctrine and Doctrine 1 (Deity of Christ). The risk is compounded because the same underlying unity-concept is applied analogically to believers’ unity with one another and with the Godhead (17:11, 17:21-23, “that they may be one as we are one”); teaching must preserve the categorical distinction between the Father-Son’s essential, uncreated unity of nature and the believers’ derivative, relational unity of purpose and love, never flattening the two into identical categories. 14:9-11’s “whoever has seen me has seen the Father” and 20:28’s climactic confession (“My Lord and my God,” addressed directly to the risen Christ) are the doctrine’s strongest full-book bookends and must be cross-taught together with 1:1’s Prologue claim. - Cross-reference: Core glossary J19 (equal with God), J32 (I and the Father are one), J43 (that they may be one), J46 (My Lord and my God).
