Welcome to the Library

What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Core Glossary

Lamentations — Core Glossary (Hmong Language Package)

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, across all five chapters of Lamentations, including the verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage (3:19-26). Per the governing rule inherited from the Romans baseline: any term already fixed in assets/translation_memory.json is reused exactly, character-for-character, and is marked “Reused (TM)” in the Status column. Newly surfaced terms are marked “NEW” and are logged here pending a future TM-revision review; none are to be treated as silently permanent.

Risk tier definitions (inherited exactly from the Romans baseline bible_term_registry.json):

  • Critical — doctrinally load-bearing with a strong, specific collision with Hmong traditional religion that could invert or neutralize the doctrine if unaddressed.
  • High — real potential for confusion with a specific traditional-religious concept/practice or a serious cross-doctrine-blending risk; manageable with a documented disambiguating strategy.
  • Medium — partial semantic mismatch, register gap, or comprehension gap, no direct collision.
  • Low — already-stable, safe rendering with minimal ambiguity.

Fixed TM rendering retained (no re-gloss permitted), but a mandatory disambiguating teaching note is required at first occurrence per lesson module.

Qualifier clause is structurally mandatory — never drop it — or the term collapses into generic affection, losing covenant-loyalty content. Adaptation: TM’s mandatory anchor is Yexus Khetos; here the explicit textual agent is tus Tswv (pre-incarnation OT context). Must anchor to tus Tswv within the verse’s own clause, with a separate cross-reference teaching note (not inserted into the verse itself) on NT fulfillment in Christ.

Governing Note

This glossary and its companion 07_semantic_analysis.md together constitute the Phase 1, Step 1 deliverable for the Hmong Lamentations Language Package. All Reused (TM) entries are non-negotiable per the Romans baseline’s no-re-gloss rule. All NEW entries are proposed pending formal TM-revision review and human theologian sign-off, with Critical/High-risk NEW entries (rows 7, 10, 12, 17, 21, 22, 25, 35, 37, 41, 43, 48) requiring mandatory human theologian review before any Phase 2 content generation proceeds, consistent with the escalation rules already established in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §9.

Critical Risk Terms

Human Spirit Soul

Approved rendering: ntsuj plig
Transliteration: nefesh (anthropological)
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God; Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love
Rejected alternatives: Vaj Ntsuj Plig — forbidden for this referent, reserved exclusively for the Holy Spirit

Inherited from Romans package, exact string, RISK ESCALATED from High (Romans) to Critical for this book specifically. Lamentations is a mourning-genre text (1:11,16,19; 2:12; 3:20,24,25,51,58) in which the soul is repeatedly bowed down, melting, poured out — precisely the situational profile (grief, shock, trauma) in which Hmong traditional religion performs hu plig, the ritual calling-back of a wandering soul. No re-gloss permitted; a mandatory disambiguating teaching note contrasting the whole-person praying/hoping nefesh with the ritual wandering-soul concept is required at first occurrence in every lesson module.

Righteousness Of God Righteous

Approved rendering: Vajtswv txoj kev ncaj ncees / tus ncaj ncees
Transliteration: dikaiosynē theou, dikaios / tsaddiq
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘kev ncaj ncees’ without qualifier — rejected, reads as self-achieved moralism

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. In Lamentations 1:18 (‘the LORD is righteous, for I have rebelled’) this is applied to God’s judicial rightness in enacting judgment, not forensic imputation to a believer. Teaching content must clarify this distinct application and must be kept lexically distinct from the NEW faithfulness_of_god_emunah entry below to prevent doctrine-bleed.

Grace

Approved rendering: txiaj ntsim
Transliteration: charis
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment
Rejected alternatives: koob hmoov (fortune/blessing tied to fate and ritual correctness) — PERMANENTLY FORBIDDEN for this sense

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Retained here specifically as the cross-reference anchor for the forbidden-substitution logic applied to the NEW steadfast_love_chesed entry below: chesed, like charis, is unearned and covenant-grounded, never fortune-based, and must never be rendered with koob hmoov.

Propitiation Atoning Sacrifice

Approved rendering: qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum
Transliteration: hilastērion
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline
Rejected alternatives: transliterated loanword — rejected, bare ‘qhov theej’ without qualifying clause — rejected

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Retained here as a fenced contrast-term: the NEW punishment_iniquity_accomplished entry (Lamentations 4:22) must be explicitly distinguished from this once-for-all NT atonement; conflating a completed historical disciplinary sentence with Christ’s atoning satisfaction would flatten redemptive history.

Justify Reckon As Righteous

Approved rendering: ua kom ncaj ncees / raug suav tias ncaj ncees
Transliteration: dikaioō, logizomai
Doctrine: General / Cross-cutting
Rejected alternatives: ‘ua zoo’ (do good) framing — rejected

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Retained purely as a fenced contrast-term to prevent the forensic-imputation qualifier vocabulary from bleeding into this book’s righteousness_of_god_righteous entry (1:18) or the faithfulness_of_god_emunah entry (3:23), both of which have different referents.

High Risk Terms

Salvation Save

Approved rendering: kev cawm dim / cawm
Transliteration: sōtēria, sōzō / teshu’ah, yasha
Doctrine: Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love
Rejected alternatives: unanchored ‘dim’ (escape) parallel to shamanic ua neeb soul-rescue — rejected without explicit anchoring

Inherited from Romans package, exact string, context-adapted. Romans mandates the anchor Yexus Khetos; in Lamentations 3:26 (pre-incarnation OT context) the explicit textual agent is tus Tswv — anchor within the verse’s own clause to tus Tswv, never insert Yexus Khetos into the OT verse itself. A separate teaching note (not inside the verse) should cross-reference the NT identification of Christ as fulfillment of this covenant-keeping LORD.

Wrath Of God

Approved rendering: kev npau taws ntawm Vajtswv
Transliteration: orgē theou / aph, charon
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline
Rejected alternatives: unqualified ‘npau taws’ associated only with capricious spirit/ancestor anger — rejected without explicit contrast teaching

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Recurrence density in Lamentations 1-3 and direct pairing with destroyed-sanctuary imagery (2:6-7) sharpen the capricious-spirit-anger misreading risk beyond the Romans baseline’s typical exposure; must always be paired with the reluctance-clause (3:33, see not_willingly_afflict below).

Sin Act And Condition

Approved rendering: txhaum / kev txhaum
Transliteration: hamartia / chatta’ah, chet
Doctrine: Corporate Confession of Sin

Inherited from Romans package, exact string, used as the general sin-category term throughout chs. 1,3,4,5. See NEW entries rebellion_willful_transgression and uncleanness_moral_defilement below for the more specific vocabulary this book adds.

Original Sin Adam Christ Typology

Approved rendering: Adas / kev ua txhaum (ntawm Adas)
Transliteration: Adam; paraptōma
Doctrine: Corporate Confession of Sin
Rejected alternatives: ‘sin entered’ rendered with nkag (spirit/dab possession verb) — rejected

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Retained here as the direct doctrinal parallel/precedent for the NEW our_fathers_sinned_corporate_guilt entry below (Lamentations 5:7): federal/inherited guilt is culturally unfamiliar in the same way, and requires the same class of dedicated teaching note.

Steadfast Love Chesed

Approved rendering: txoj kev hlub ruaj khov (raws li lus cog tseg)
Transliteration: chesed (chasdei)
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment
Rejected alternatives: koob hmoov (fate/fortune tied to ritual correctness) — PERMANENTLY FORBIDDEN, identical inversion risk to the Romans grace entry, bare ‘kev hlub’ without the covenant qualifier — rejected, collapses into generic strong affection, losing covenant-loyalty content

NEW — CRITICAL for this curriculum’s title doctrine. Built from the inherited love (‘kev hlub’) + ‘ruaj khov’ (firm/unwavering) + mandatory tie to the inherited promise entry (‘lus cog tseg’). The bracketed covenant-qualifier is structurally mandatory at every occurrence (Lamentations 3:22); dropping it collapses covenant loyalty-love into sentimentality. Must be kept lexically distinct from mercy (compassion toward the miserable) and from faithfulness_of_god_emunah (God’s reliability) — a three-way fence.

Faithfulness Of God Emunah

Approved rendering: Vajtswv txoj kev ruaj khov
Transliteration: emunah
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment
Rejected alternatives: Vajtswv txoj kev ncaj ncees (righteousness) substituted for faithfulness — rejected, imports the justification-doctrine moralism-collision into an unrelated attribute, kev ntseeg (human believing) direction reversed and applied to God — rejected, referent-direction confusion

NEW — CRITICAL for this curriculum’s title doctrine (‘Great is your faithfulness,’ 3:23). Must be kept lexically distinct from the inherited righteousness_of_god_righteous entry (Critical, forensic-imputation sense) despite superficial adjacency via ‘ncaj ncees’-adjacent vocabulary risk, and from the inherited faith_believe entry despite the shared Hebrew root aman (‘believe/amen’) — here God is faithful TO us; this is not human belief.

Quietly Stillness

Approved rendering: nyob twjywm
Transliteration: dumam
Doctrine: Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love
Rejected alternatives: unmarked stillness with no relational-trust framing — rejected, collapses into ritual-avoidance silence before a spirit

NEW. Without an explicit teaching note, indistinguishable from ritual-avoidance stillness practiced before a dab or during txiv neeb procedures, where silence functions to avoid provoking further spirit-anger (3:26). Must be explicitly taught as trust-based stillness grounded in the known covenant character of vv.22-24, the opposite of fear-based appeasement-silence.

Rebellion Willful Transgression

Approved rendering: kev fav xeeb thiab ntxeev siab rau Vajtswv
Transliteration: pesha / marah
Doctrine: Corporate Confession of Sin
Rejected alternatives: dropping the object ‘rau Vajtswv’ — rejected, localizes the confession as merely social/political betrayal

NEW. Names willful, relationship-breaking betrayal (1:18; 3:42), distinct from reparable social/ritual fault. ‘Fav xeeb’/‘ntxeev siab’ are strong existing Hmong terms for betrayal of a clan or chief; the object ‘rau Vajtswv’ is structurally mandatory and must never be dropped.

Return Repent Corporate

Approved rendering: tig rov los cuag tus Tswv
Transliteration: shuv
Doctrine: Corporate Confession of Sin
Rejected alternatives: self-directed ‘resolve to do better’ framing with no divine anchor — rejected, reads as generic moralism

NEW. Active corporate self-examination followed by turning back to the LORD (3:40, ‘let us test and examine our ways…’). Must be anchored explicitly to God (cuag tus Tswv / cuag Vajtswv) at every occurrence, echoing the collision-avoidance logic already established for the Romans-inherited justification reckoning-qualifier.

Divine Discipline Composite

Approved rendering: Vajtswv txoj kev qhuab ntuas thiab kev txiav txim ncaj ncees
Transliteration: composite (shevet + lo mi-libbo + affliction vocabulary)
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline

NEW composite doctrinal term (ad hoc, not a single fixed Hebrew lexeme; flagged for TM-revision review before reuse in future OT curricula). Must be kept distinct from BOTH bare wrath_of_god (capricious-anger collision risk) AND the inherited no_condemnation/katakrima entry (NT eschatological condemnation); Lamentations’ disciplinary judgment (3:1,33,38; 4:22) is historical/temporal and covenant-corrective, paired with divine reluctance.

Lord Like An Enemy

Approved rendering: zoo li tus yeeb ncuab
Transliteration: hayah ke-oyev YHWH
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline
Rejected alternatives: unmarked ‘the LORD is an enemy’ with no simile marker — rejected, reads as literal ontological hostility

NEW. The simile marker ‘zoo li’ (‘like’) is structurally mandatory at every occurrence (2:5). Without it, plus a cross-reference to 3:22-33’s disciplinary-not-capricious framing, this verse alone risks assimilation into the animistic pattern of a spirit turning hostile over ritual offense, needing placation.

Uncleanness Moral Defilement

Approved rendering: kev qias tsis huv
Transliteration: tum’ah
Doctrine: Corporate Confession of Sin
Rejected alternatives: combining with ‘dawb huv’ (Romans-fixed sanctification vocabulary) — deliberately rejected

NEW. Ritual/moral defilement applied metaphorically to Jerusalem’s corporate covenant-breaking sin (1:8-9). Deliberately avoids the dawb huv collocation to prevent this OT ritual-defilement image from being heard as the same category the Romans TM’s sanctification/baptism entries were careful to distinguish from Hmong spirit-contamination cleansing rites. Must be taught as moral defilement (idolatry, covenant-breaking), never literal ritual/spiritual contamination requiring shamanic remedy.

Punishment Iniquity Accomplished

Approved rendering: koj tej txim raug them txaus lawm
Transliteration: tam avon (tam avonekh)
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline

NEW. Marks Zion’s specific disciplinary sentence as having run its full covenantal course (4:22). Must be carefully distinguished from the inherited propitiation_atoning_sacrifice entry (once-for-all NT atonement); this concerns completion of a historical, disciplinary judgment, not the atoning satisfaction of God’s wrath achieved in Christ.

Our Fathers Sinned Corporate Guilt

Approved rendering: peb cov niam thiab txiv txhaum, tab sis peb yog cov raug them tej nqi ntawd
Transliteration: avoteinu chat’u…avonoteihem savalnu
Doctrine: Corporate Confession of Sin
Rejected alternatives: framing as a debt owed to angered ancestral spirits, remediable by ritual restitution — rejected, replaces covenantal God-ward guilt with ancestor-appeasement logic

NEW. Intergenerational/corporate consequence of sin (5:7); same collision class as the inherited original_sin_adam_christ_typology entry. Hmong social memory tends to frame inherited consequence through clan-honor/shame or ancestral-spirit-appeasement categories rather than covenantal, God-ward corporate guilt; requires a dedicated teaching note paralleling the Romans Original Sin note.

Unresolved Close Utterly Rejected

Approved rendering: tsuas yog koj tau tso peb pov tseg tas mus li lawm xwb los?
Transliteration: ki im-ma’os me’astanu
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God; Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love
Rejected alternatives: appending an in-verse resolving clause (‘but we know You have not really rejected us’) — PERMANENTLY FORBIDDEN inside the verse rendering

NEW. The book’s famously unresolved final clause (5:22); no narrative resolution follows in the Hebrew text as arranged. Any curriculum content that appends a resolving sentence INSIDE the translated verse itself misrepresents the canonical text’s own deliberately open ending. Theological commentary belongs strictly in a separate teaching note.

Medium Risk Terms

Mercy

Approved rendering: txoj kev khuv leej
Transliteration: eleos / rachamim
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment
Rejected alternatives: txiaj ntsim (grace) used interchangeably for mercy — rejected, mercy and grace are theologically distinct emphases

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. In Lamentations 3:22 must be kept lexically distinct from BOTH txiaj ntsim (grace) AND the new steadfast_love_chesed entry below — a three-way fence, not merely the Romans two-way fence.

Redemption

Approved rendering: kev txhiv
Transliteration: apolytrōsis / ga’al
Doctrine: Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Applied in Lamentations 3:58 (‘you have redeemed my life’) via the kinsman-redeemer legal/economic sense; good bridge already established.

Will Of God

Approved rendering: Vajtswv lub siab nyiam
Transliteration: thelēma theou
Doctrine: Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Establishes the precedent for using ‘siab’ (liver/heart) as the seat of will/volition, directly reused in the NEW call_to_mind_heart entry below (Lamentations 3:21).

No Condemnation

Approved rendering: kev raug txiav txim rau kev puas tsuaj
Transliteration: katakrima
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Retained here purely as a fenced contrast-term: the NEW divine_discipline_composite entry below must never be equated with this NT eschatological-condemnation-removed-in-Christ concept, since Lamentations’ judgment is historical/temporal, not a statement about final salvation status.

Faith Believe

Approved rendering: kev ntseeg / ntseeg
Transliteration: pistis, pisteuō
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Retained as a fenced contrast-term for the NEW faithfulness_of_god_emunah entry below: emunah is God’s own reliability TO us (direction: God -> people), the reverse direction from this entry’s human believing TOWARD God, despite the shared Hebrew root (aman) with ‘amen/believe.‘

Affliction

Approved rendering: kev txom nyem thiab kev raug tsim txom
Transliteration: oni
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God

NEW. Must not be softened into mere ‘sadness’; carries the sense of being oppressed by an external power, naming covenant-curse suffering personally (1; 3:19).

Wandering Homelessness

Approved rendering: kev poob tebchaws, kev ya tsov ya tsuag
Transliteration: merud
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God

NEW. Strong positive cultural bridge to the Hmong community’s 20th-century refugee/displacement history (3:19); requires a mandatory pastoral-sensitivity note so the empathetic analogy does not eclipse or flatten the covenant-judgment meaning of the text.

Confess Sin

Approved rendering: lees txim
Transliteration: yadah (Hitpael)
Doctrine: Corporate Confession of Sin

NEW. Standard existing Hmong Christian vocabulary for formal, verbal acknowledgment of guilt before God (implied, 3:42); low novelty risk.

Rod Of Discipline

Approved rendering: pas nrig ntawm nws txoj kev npau taws
Transliteration: shevet
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline

NEW. Opens ch.3 (3:1), personalizing corporate judgment onto one representative man. Positive bridge via Hmong parental/village disciplinary-rod custom; must always be taught alongside divine_discipline_composite and not_willingly_afflict below so correction is understood as purposeful, not random cruelty.

Daughter Zion Daughter Judah

Approved rendering: Tus Ntxhais Xi-oo / Tus Ntxhais Yudas
Transliteration: bat-Tsiyyon / bat-Yehudah
Doctrine: Corporate Confession of Sin; Honest Grief and Lament before God

NEW. Personification of the city/people as a mourning woman (chs. 1,2,4), modeling corporate lament as legitimate address to God. [TRANSLATOR REVIEW NEEDED: confirm ‘Xi-oo’ transliteration against existing printed Hmong Bible Zion rendering]. Comprehension gap only; no traditional-religion collision.

Virgin Daughter

Approved rendering: tus ntxhais tsis tau muaj txiv
Transliteration: betulah
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God
Rejected alternatives: dawb huv (Romans-fixed sanctification vocabulary) — deliberately rejected as a rendering for ‘virgin,’ to prevent bleed into the ritual-purity collision flagged for sanctification/baptism

NEW. Image of former untouched dignity now defiled/exposed (ch.1), intensifying shame imagery.

Exile Captivity

Approved rendering: kev raug ntes coj mus lwm tebchaws / kev poob tebchaws
Transliteration: galut / galah
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God

NEW. The controlling historical-theological reality of the whole book (ch.1): covenant curse enacted as national displacement. Same pastoral-sensitivity flag as wandering_homelessness above — strong resonance with modern Hmong refugee/diaspora history.

Sanctuary Altar

Approved rendering: lub tuam tsev dawb huv / lub thaj fij
Transliteration: miqdash / mizbeach
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline

NEW. The Jerusalem temple and altar, destroyed by God’s own judgment (2:6-7). ‘Dawb huv’ is deliberately retained here (unlike uncleanness_moral_defilement above) because this is the genuine OT cultic-holiness referent; comprehension gap only, provided destruction is clearly marked as divine judgment, not enemy desecration alone.

False Prophets Empty Visions

Approved rendering: cov cev lus Vajtswv cuav
Transliteration: chazon shav
Doctrine: Corporate Confession of Sin

NEW. Prophetic messages lacking divine authorization, blamed for failing to expose Judah’s sin before judgment fell (2:14). The ‘cuav’ (false) qualifier is mandatory whenever referencing these prophets, to avoid casting doubt on genuine prophetic office elsewhere in canon.

Lords Anointed Human King

Approved rendering: tus vajntxwv uas raug pleev roj tsam los ntawm tus Tswv
Transliteration: mashiach YHWH
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline
Rejected alternatives: Khetos / Leej Tub ntawm Vajtswv (Christ-titles) — rejected, this refers to the historical, fallen Davidic king (Zedekiah), not Christ, despite the shared root mashiach/Christos

NEW. Refers to the captured historical king (4:20), deepening the crisis behind the book’s grief. Teaching may note the typological connection to a greater coming Anointed One but must not present 4:20 as directly speaking of Christ.

Low Risk Terms

God

Approved rendering: Vajtswv
Transliteration: Elohim / theos
Doctrine: General / Cross-cutting
Rejected alternatives: Ntuj (impersonal sky/heaven) — rejected, lacks personal deity sense, dab (spirit) — rejected, denotes false/lesser spirit

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Addressee throughout every lament and confession in Lamentations.

Lord

Approved rendering: tus Tswv
Transliteration: YHWH / kyrios
Doctrine: General / Cross-cutting

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Also the explicit textual agent to which ‘steadfast love’ (chesed), ‘faithfulness’ (emunah), and ‘salvation’ (teshu’ah) must be anchored within the same clause in Lamentations 3:19-26, per this book’s pre-incarnation OT context.

Hope

Approved rendering: kev cia siab
Transliteration: elpis / yachal, qavah
Doctrine: Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. In Lamentations 3:21,24,25,26 must retain the causal ‘therefore’ linkage (vim li no / yog li ntawd) and explicit anchoring to tus Tswv, per the Romans TM’s existing forbidden-substitution note against hope-as-mere-wishing.

Glory

Approved rendering: lub yeeb koob
Transliteration: doxa / kavod
Doctrine: General / Cross-cutting

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Applied in Lamentations 2:1, ‘the LORD has cast down from heaven to earth the glory of Israel.‘

Promise

Approved rendering: lus cog tseg
Transliteration: epangelia
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Functions in Lamentations as the mandatory covenant-qualifying anchor inside the NEW steadfast_love_chesed compound below.

Impartiality Of God

Approved rendering: tsis saib ntsej muag
Transliteration: aprosōpolēmpsia
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline

Inherited from Romans package (concept), exact string. Applied in Lamentations 4:21-22 to God’s future, impartial judgment on Edom, Judah’s oppressor nation.

Heir

Approved rendering: tus qub txeeg qub teg
Transliteration: klēronomos / nachalah
Doctrine: Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love; Honest Grief and Lament before God

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. In Lamentations 5:2 the same positive inheritance vocabulary is used in a negated/loss context (‘our inheritance has turned over to strangers’) — comprehension-level nuance only.

Love

Approved rendering: kev hlub
Transliteration: agapē
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Used as the base component built into the NEW steadfast_love_chesed compound below (‘txoj kev hlub ruaj khov’).

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering: lub Nceeg Vaj ntawm Vajtswv
Transliteration: basileia tou theou
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment

Inherited from Romans package, exact string. Conceptually related to the NEW lord_reigns_forever entry (Lamentations 5:19), the theological counterweight to the fallen human king of 4:20.

Remember

Approved rendering: nco ntsoov / nco txog
Transliteration: zakar
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God

NEW. Covenantal imperative memory-appeal opening both the ch.3 hope-turn (3:19-20) and the ch.5 closing communal prayer (5:1) — a deliberate structural echo; must read identically at both occurrences.

Good God Is Good

Approved rendering: Vajtswv zoo
Transliteration: tov
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment

NEW. Generalizes the personal experience of 3:22-24 into an axiomatic truth about God’s character (3:25); stable, no collision.

Seek God

Approved rendering: nrhiav Vajtswv
Transliteration: darash
Doctrine: Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love

NEW. Active complement to passive waiting (3:25); hope in Lamentations is not mere passivity.

Widow

Approved rendering: poj ntsuam
Transliteration: almanah
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God

NEW. Zion described as ‘like a widow’ (ch.1) — total loss of covenant protection/status. Stable existing Hmong term with real cultural resonance; no collision.

Comforter Absent

Approved rendering: tus nplig siab
Transliteration: menachem
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God

NEW. Repeated refrain ‘she has no comforter’ (1:2,9,16,17,21); prepares for 3:21’s turn to God alone as true comfort.

Enemy Adversary

Approved rendering: tus yeeb ncuab
Transliteration: oyev / tsar
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God; The Justice of God’s Discipline

NEW. Standard military/political enemy term (ch.1; 3:52-66); at 2:5 applied paradoxically to God Himself — see lord_like_an_enemy entry below for the required simile-marking.

Edom People Group

Approved rendering: cov neeg Edoo
Transliteration: Edom
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline

NEW. Judah’s oppressor nation, subject of future judgment (4:21-22), transliterated following the existing cov Yudas / cov Kilis people-group pattern. [TRANSLATOR REVIEW NEEDED: confirm standard Hmong transliteration of ‘Edom’ against printed Bible tradition].

Book Title Lamentations

Approved rendering: Tej Lus Quaj Ntsuag
Transliteration: Eikhah / Thrēnoi
Doctrine: General / Cross-cutting

NEW, proposed working book title (‘Words/Songs of Lamentation’), pending downstream confirmation. [TRANSLATOR REVIEW NEEDED: confirm against existing Hmong Bible print edition book title before treating as permanent]. Citation format: ‘Tej Lus Quaj Ntsuag [tshooj]:[nqe]’ in Hmong-facing content; ‘Lamentations [chapter]:[verse]’ in English-facing documents.

Low-Medium Risk Terms

Wormwood And Gall

Approved rendering: tshuaj iab thiab tshuaj muaj taug
Transliteration: la’anah va-rosh
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God
Rejected alternatives: transliterated Hebrew botanical name — rejected, semantically opaque

NEW. Fixed merism for extreme visceral bitterness (3:15,19); comprehension gap only (no local wormwood plant), no traditional-religion collision.

Call To Mind Heart

Approved rendering: kuv rov xav tas los ntawm kuv lub siab
Transliteration: lev / ashiv el-libi
Doctrine: Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love

NEW. Deliberate, willed recollection (3:21) contrasted with 3:20’s involuntary compulsive grief-memory; the pivot verse of the core passage. Parallels the Romans-inherited will_of_god entry’s use of ‘siab’ as the seat of volition.

My Portion

Approved rendering: feem
Transliteration: cheleq
Doctrine: Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love

NEW. Inheritance-share language (3:24, ‘Tus Tswv yog kuv feem’) claiming God Himself, not restored land/circumstance, as the speaker’s true possession; positive bridge to Hmong clan-inheritance customs, parallel to the inherited heir entry. Comprehension risk only: clarify the ‘portion’ is a person, not property.

Inheritance Turned To Strangers

Approved rendering: qub txeeg qub teg (negated)
Transliteration: nachalah
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God

NEW, reuses inherited heir vocabulary in an inverted/loss context (5:2, ‘our inheritance has turned over to strangers’); comprehension-level nuance only.

Lord Reigns Forever

Approved rendering: Koj, tus Tswv, kav mus ib txhis
Transliteration: attah YHWH le-olam teshev
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment

NEW, conceptually tied to the inherited kingdom_of_god entry. Theological counterweight to the fallen human king (lords_anointed_human_king, 4:20): God’s own kingship endures even when the earthly Davidic throne has fallen (5:19).

Renew Our Days Inclusio

Approved rendering: tshiab txhua tagkis (3:23) / ua kom peb cov hnub tshiab dua (5:21)
Transliteration: chadash
Doctrine: God’s Faithfulness amid Judgment; Hope Anchored in God’s Steadfast Love

NEW. Deliberate structural inclusio linking the book’s central hope-statement (3:23, ‘new every morning’) to its closing petition (5:21, ‘renew our days’); must be taught together, never rendered independently without cross-reference.

Medium-High Risk Terms

Not Willingly Afflict

Approved rendering: tsis yog nws lub siab xav ua li ntawd
Transliteration: lo mi-libbo
Doctrine: The Justice of God’s Discipline

NEW. Directly qualifies wrath/discipline vocabulary (3:33): God’s judgment is just but not gleeful. Must be held in tension with, never used to cancel, wrath_of_god/rod_of_discipline/divine_discipline_composite — prevents both softening judgment into non-judgment and hardening God’s character into capriciousness.

Why Forget Us Forever Protest

Approved rendering: ua li cas koj tso peb tseg mus ib txhis?
Transliteration: lammah…tishkachenu
Doctrine: Honest Grief and Lament before God
Rejected alternatives: theologically ‘corrected’/pre-answered rendering of the question — rejected, undermines Scripture-modeled protest-prayer

NEW. Bold protest-question (5:20) sitting directly alongside the earlier confident hope of 3:22-23. Pastoral risk of over-resolution, not lexical collision: must be preserved as legitimate, Scripture-modeled prayer-speech to God, never smoothed over.
