Cross-Reference Analysis
Revelation — Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis (Full-Book Coverage)
0. Method
This document covers every chapter of Revelation, 1–22, cataloguing Old Testament quotations and allusions, messianic references, typological patterns, and — because this Hmong Language Package sits alongside the existing Romans package — explicit parallels to Romans. Every row lists: Passage (Revelation), Theme, Related Character(s), OT/NT Connection, and Translation Sensitivity (drawing risk classifications from analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md and analysis/08_core_glossary.md where the term is already registered, and flagging new sensitivity where it is not). Chapters contributing no independent OT connection beyond material already tabulated are marked “reviewed, no new entries” rather than omitted.

| Revelation 2:23 | Divine judgment by works | Christ | Jeremiah 17:10; Psalm 62:12 | Medium — must be taught alongside Romans’ forensic-justification doctrine (Romans 4:5) as evaluative/evidentiary judgment of fruit, never as the ground of acceptance. |
| Revelation 2:26-27 | Messianic rule | Christ; overcomers | Psalm 2:8-9 (rod of iron) | Medium — recurs Revelation 12:5; 19:15; ties “The Return and Reign of Christ” to Davidic messianism. |

| Revelation 5:6 | Suffering, sacrificed Messiah | Christ (Lamb) | Isaiah 53:7 (lamb led to slaughter); Exodus 12 (Passover lamb typology) | Critical — anchors tus Menyuam Yaj to atoning death; direct typological continuation of the Passover Lamb and of Romans’ propitiation doctrine (Romans 3:25). |

| Revelation 12:5 | Messianic rule, protoevangelium fulfilled | the male child | Psalm 2:9 (rod of iron); Genesis 3:15 (the woman’s offspring) | Critical — direct fulfillment of the protoevangelium; must be taught as the culmination of the very first messianic promise in Scripture, tying Genesis 3 to Revelation 12 across the whole canon. |

| Revelation 12:11 | Victory formula | believers | (synthesizes Romans 8:33-37 “who shall separate us”; Romans 16:20 “God will crush Satan”) | Critical (composite) — “they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony” directly parallels and completes Romans’ own already-victorious-in-Christ language (Romans 8:37); rendering-consistency rule required (see §3 below). |

| Revelation 13:11-15 | Deceptive false prophecy | the second beast/false prophet | Deuteronomy 13:1-3 (test of a false prophet: signs do not validate a message contrary to God) | High — see core glossary #36; must not be read as blanket condemnation of traditional religious specialists generically. |

| Revelation 16:19 | Cup of God’s wrath | — | Jeremiah 25:15-16; Psalm 75:8 | Low — reuses baseline wrath_of_god phrase-structure. Chapter 16 is otherwise a narrative outworking of already-tabulated wrath/plague vocabulary and is reviewed as such. |

| Revelation 21:8 | Exclusion of the unrepentant | vice-list; the “second death” | Deuteronomy 29:19-20 (covenant-curse pattern); Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (sorcery/divination named among abominations) | Critical — see semantic analysis §1 full treatment; kev ua khawv koob (sorcery) direct collision with living Hmong shamanic practice. |

| Revelation 22:1-2 | Eden’s river and tree restored and universalized | — | Ezekiel 47:1-12 (river from the temple, healing trees); Genesis 2:9-10; Zechariah 14:8 | Critical — completes the single longest typological arc in Scripture: Genesis 2-3 (Eden lost) → Ezekiel 47 (temple-river prophecy) → Revelation 22 (Eden restored, universalized “for the healing of the nations”). Must be taught as one continuous canonical storyline, directly resolving Romans 8:19-22’s “creation groans” (see §3 rule below). |
| Revelation 22:3 | The Genesis curse reversed | God | Zechariah 14:11; Genesis 3:17-19 | High — see semantic analysis §1; must be the cosmic Genesis-curse, not merely personal/familial curse-removal. |
| Revelation 22:4 | Unmediated vision of God | the redeemed | Numbers 6:27 (priestly name-blessing); Psalm 17:15; Exodus 33:20 (contrast: no one may see God’s face and live) | Medium — climactic reversal of Exodus 33:20’s restriction; strong teaching point for “Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil.” |
| Revelation 22:8-9 | Worship belongs to God alone | an angel; John | (theological principle of Exodus 20:3-5, not a direct quotation); parallels Revelation 19:10 verbatim | Critical — see core glossary #82 (pe hawm/proskyneō); the single clearest biblical prohibition of venerative prostration toward any created being. |
| Revelation 22:13 | Divine eternality (fulfillment) | Christ | Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12 | High — repeats Revelation 1:8/21:6; now explicitly applied to Christ, asserting full deity — direct continuity with the Romans baseline son_of_god (full-deity) doctrine. |
| Revelation 22:14-15 | Access granted/denied | the redeemed; excluded vice-list | Isaiah 52:1; Deuteronomy 23:18 (ritual-cultic exclusion pattern) | Critical — reuses Revelation 21:8’s vice-list terms; consistency required. |
| Revelation 22:16 | Davidic-messianic and star-prophecy fulfillment | Christ | Isaiah 11:1,10; Numbers 24:17 (“a star shall come out of Jacob”) | High — see core glossary “morning star” entry; direct fulfillment of Balaam’s star-prophecy (Numbers 24:17), itself already referenced negatively at Revelation 2:14 — deliberate literary contrast between false prophet Balaam and the true Star, Christ. |
| Revelation 22:17 | Free, unmerited invitation renewed | the Spirit; the Bride | Isaiah 55:1 | Critical — repeats the Revelation 21:6 grace-formula; see §3 rule below. |
| Revelation 22:18-19 | Canon-guarding warning | — | Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32 | High — direct literary dependence on the Deuteronomic covenant-book warning; grounds “Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation” against private numerological/fate-based speculation. |

3. Typological Patterns Across the Whole Canon
| Type (OT) | Antitype (Revelation) | Trajectory Through Romans | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passover Lamb (Exodus 12) | The slain-yet-reigning Lamb (Revelation 5:6 and throughout) | Romans 3:25 (propitiation_atoning_sacrifice, Critical) | tus Menyuam Yaj must always carry the “as though slain” (5:6) qualifier; Romans’ qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum and Revelation’s Lamb-blood language must be taught as the SAME once-for-all atoning act, not two separate sacrifices. |
| Adam, the first man (Genesis 2-3) | Eden fully restored: tree of life, no more curse (Revelation 2:7; 22:2-3,14) | Romans 5:12-19 (original_sin_adam_christ_typology, High) | The Genesis-3 curse named in Romans 5 and the “no more curse” of Revelation 22:3 must be taught as the same curse, opened and closed by the same two-Adam storyline; never treat Revelation 22:3 as addressing only personal/familial curses. |
| Ancient serpent (Genesis 3:1,14-15) | The dragon, ancient serpent, judged and bound (Revelation 12:9; 20:2-3,10) | Romans 16:20 (“God will soon crush Satan under your feet”) | Both curricula’s Satan-references must use the same identification pattern: never a bare “Xatas” without the full defeated-adversary framing; Revelation 12:9’s fourfold identification clause is the anchor for both books. |
| Covenant formula: “I will be their God, they will be my people” (Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 37:27) | Fulfilled at the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:3,7) | Romans 9:25-26 (quoting Hosea 1:10/2:23); Romans 11:26-27 (quoting Isaiah 59:20-21 / Jeremiah 31 horizon) | See §4 below — mandatory shared-quotation rendering rule. |
| Reckoned/imputed righteousness by faith (Genesis 15:6) | Bride’s fine linen = “the righteous deeds of the saints” (Revelation 19:8) | Romans 4:3 (quoting Genesis 15:6); justify_reckon_as_righteous, Critical | MUST be taught together: Revelation 19:8’s righteous deeds are the Spirit-produced FRUIT of the imputed righteousness Romans 4 describes, never its GROUND; see core glossary #75. |
| Tabernacle, God’s dwelling with Israel (Exodus 25:8; 29:45) | “The dwelling place of God is with man” (Revelation 21:3) | (Romans does not directly quote this OT text but assumes its fulfillment in in_christ_union_formula, High) | Teach the tabernacle-to-New-Jerusalem arc as the resolution of every “God with us” theme threaded through both curricula. |
| Exodus deliverance and plagues (Exodus 7-15) | Trumpet and bowl judgments (Revelation 8-9, 16); Song of Moses and the Lamb (Revelation 15:3) | Romans 9:17 (quoting Exodus 9:16, Pharaoh) | Both curricula’s treatment of Pharaoh/Egypt-plague material must present God’s sovereignty over hostile powers consistently — Romans 9 establishes the principle; Revelation 8-9, 16 narrate its final, universal-scale outworking. |
| Vengeance belongs to God (Deuteronomy 32:35,43) | Martyrs’ vindication; “he has avenged the blood of his servants” (Revelation 19:2; cf. 6:10) | Romans 12:19 (quoting Deuteronomy 32:35) | Both curricula must render this as God’s own prerogative and act, never as sanction for personal or clan-based revenge (a genuine pastoral risk given Hmong clan-honor/retaliation custom) — mandatory teaching note in both Language Packages. |
| Universal bowing before God (Isaiah 45:23) | Universal worship of the Lamb (Revelation 5:13; 15:4) | Romans 14:11 (quoting Isaiah 45:23) | pe hawm/txhos caug pe in Revelation and the more general pehawm in Romans must be taught as expressions of the same ultimate reality: every knee bowing to God/Christ alone — reinforcing, not competing with, the Romans-baseline worship teaching. |
4. Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations (Romans ↔ Revelation)
These rules govern any Phase 2 content that cites, alludes to, or teaches on an OT passage appearing in both the Romans and Revelation Language Packages. They are additive to, and never override, the Romans baseline TM.
-
Covenant formula (“I will be their God, they will be my people” — Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 31:33; Hosea 1:10/2:23; Ezekiel 37:27).
- Romans 9:25-26 renders the Hosea quotation using the baseline
nations_gentiles/jewcontrastive structure and theadoption_as_sonsentry. - Revelation 21:3,7 MUST use the identical relational vocabulary:
Vajtswv haiv neeg(his people) andraug muab coj los ua me tub (ntawm Vajtswv)(son) — reused verbatim from the Romans TM, not re-glossed. - Teaching note (mandatory, both curricula): this is ONE covenant formula, spoken across Leviticus, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Romans, and Revelation, reaching its final, unconditional fulfillment only at Revelation 21:3,7. Never present the Romans 9 and Revelation 21 occurrences as separate or unrelated promises.
- Romans 9:25-26 renders the Hosea quotation using the baseline
-
Grace/free gift language (“without cost” — Isaiah 55:1; Romans 4:4-5, 11:6; Revelation 21:6, 22:17).
dōrean(freely/without cost) in Revelation 21:6 and 22:17 must be rendered with a phrase that visibly echoes, and never contradicts, the Critical-risk baselinetxiaj ntsim(grace) entry’s unmerited-favor sense.koob hmoovremains PERMANENTLY FORBIDDEN for this sense in Revelation exactly as in Romans — the water of life is received, never earned by ritual correctness or fate.
-
Righteousness/justification language (Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:3; Revelation 19:8).
- Revelation 19:8’s “righteous deeds of the saints” (
cov ntseeg tej haujlwm ncaj ncees) must always, in the same teaching unit, cross-reference the Romans baselineraug suav tias ncaj ncees(reckoned as righteous) Critical entry, explicitly stating that Revelation 19:8 describes the FRUIT of justification, never a supplementary or alternative GROUND for final acceptance.
- Revelation 19:8’s “righteous deeds of the saints” (
-
Vengeance/vindication language (Deuteronomy 32:35,43; Romans 12:19; Revelation 6:10, 19:2).
- Both curricula must render God’s vindicating action with the same root as the baseline
kev npau taws ntawm Vajtswv(wrath of God) and never introduce clan-revenge vocabulary (e.g., terms associated with Hmong customary retaliatory-debt/blood-feud practice) as a gloss or synonym.
- Both curricula must render God’s vindicating action with the same root as the baseline
-
Election, foreknowledge, and Israel’s future (Isaiah 59:20-21; Jeremiah 31; Hosea 1:10/2:23; Romans 9-11; Revelation 7, 21).
- The 144,000/twelve-tribes imagery (Revelation 7:4-8, 21:12) must be taught in direct continuity with the Romans baseline
all_israel_will_be_saved(High risk) entry and its mandatory anchor to God’s irrevocable covenant calling (Romans 11:29). hmoov(fate) vocabulary remains PERMANENTLY FORBIDDEN for any of this material in either curriculum.
- The 144,000/twelve-tribes imagery (Revelation 7:4-8, 21:12) must be taught in direct continuity with the Romans baseline
-
Worship/prostration language (Isaiah 45:23; Romans 14:11; Revelation 5:13, 15:4, 19:10, 22:8-9).
- The Romans baseline
pehawm(cultic worship/serve) and Revelation’spe hawm/txhos caug pe(proskyneō, bow down) are DISTINCT terms for distinct source words (latreuō vs. proskyneō) and must never be merged into a single gloss; both, however, require the same mandatory object-anchoring discipline (worship-object always explicitly stated) established in the Romans baseline §2 enforcement rule, extended here to Revelation’s more numerous positive/negative worship-object contrasts.
- The Romans baseline
-
Adam-Christ/Eden typology (Genesis 2-3; Romans 5:12-19; Revelation 2:7, 22:2-3,14).
- Any lesson addressing Romans 5’s Adam-Christ typology and any lesson addressing Revelation’s tree-of-life/no-more-curse fulfillment must cross-reference each other explicitly in teaching notes, since together they form the single longest doctrinal arc spanning both Language Packages (Fall in Romans 5 / Genesis 3 → cosmic resolution in Revelation 22).
-
Sovereignty over hostile powers (Exodus 9:16; Romans 9:17; Revelation 8-9, 16).
- Both curricula’s treatment of divine sovereignty exercised through/against hostile powers (Pharaoh in Romans; the Beast/Babylon in Revelation) must use the baseline

- Both curricula’s treatment of divine sovereignty exercised through/against hostile powers (Pharaoh in Romans; the Beast/Babylon in Revelation) must use the baseline
5. Citation Normalization Note
All citations in this document follow the normalizable format [Book Name] [chapter]:[verse] (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Galatians 2:16, Revelation 21:1-8), suitable for automated cross-reference indexing and for mapping onto any downstream Bible-API/versification system. This format is retained for all Phase 1 analysis documents. It is distinct from, and must be converted to, the Hmong-language curriculum citation convention at Phase 2 (Loos [chapter]:[verse] for Romans; Qhia Tshwm [chapter]:[verse] for Revelation, per analysis/08_core_glossary.md entry #30 and consistent with the Romans baseline §7 citation convention, to be formally specified for Revelation in a future 12_ai_translation_requirements.md-equivalent document for this curriculum).
End of Cross-Reference Analysis — All 22 chapters of Revelation reviewed; every OT quotation/allusion catalogued; messianic references and typological patterns indexed; Romans-parallel rendering-consistency rules established; no chapter silently omitted.
