Welcome to the Library

What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Cross-Reference Analysis

Zechariah — Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis (Hmong Language Package)

§0. Methodology and Citation Convention

Citation format. All Scripture references in this document use the normalizable English convention Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., Zechariah 9:9, Matthew 21:5, Genesis 15:6), matching the format already used in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json’s supporting_passages fields. This format is for internal cross-reference tooling and Phase 3 hyperlink construction; it is distinct from the Hmong-language, curriculum-facing citation convention (Loos [chapter]:[verse] for Romans, per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §7).

Hmong citation convention for Zechariah (new — pending confirmation). Following the same pattern that fixed “Loos” for Romans, this package proposes Xekhaliya as the standard Hmong book-name transliteration for Zechariah, consistent with existing Hmong Bible tradition (Vaj Lug Kub Npaiv Npaum) usage. Full first-reference form: Phau Ntawv Xekhaliya; abbreviated thereafter to Xekhaliya [chapter]:[verse], e.g. Xekhaliya 9:9. [TRANSLATOR REVIEW NEEDED: confirm "Xekhaliya" spelling against the currently printed Hmong Bible edition before this becomes a permanent TM entry.]

Scope. This document catalogs (a) every identifiable Old Testament quotation or allusion embedded within Zechariah itself (Zechariah quoting/echoing earlier Torah, historical, and prophetic material), (b) every New Testament quotation or allusion to Zechariah, (c) Messianic-typological threads, and (d) specific parallels to the Hmong Romans Language Package, with rendering-consistency rules governing any term or clause that is shared between the two curricula.

§1. Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations

These rules are binding wherever a Zechariah passage is quoted in the New Testament and that NT passage’s vocabulary already has a fixed Hmong rendering in the Romans baseline TM, or wherever a Zechariah term is doctrinally identical to a Romans-TM term. No Critical/High-risk Romans TM entry may be altered; where Zechariah’s own semantic analysis has proposed a new candidate term for an overlapping concept, the more restrictive (Romans-baseline) rendering governs unless the referent is demonstrably different.

#Shared ConceptRomans TM Rendering (governs)Zechariah Context(s)Consistency Rule
1Peace (šālôm / eirēnē)kev thaj yeebZech 9:10 “he shall speak peace unto the heathen”Use kev thaj yeeb identically; do not introduce a synonym even though the Hebrew/LXX differs lexically from the Romans NT Greek — the referent (God-given wholeness/reconciliation) is the same.
2Nations/Gentiles (gôyim / ethnē)lwm Haiv NeegZech 2:11; 8:22-23; 9:10; 14:16Use lwm Haiv Neeg identically at every occurrence; supports the direct Rom 15:9-12 catena parallel (see §4 below).
3Righteous/Righteousness (tsaddiq / dikaios)tus ncaj ncees / Vajtswv txoj kev ncaj nceesZech 9:9 “he is just”Use tus ncaj ncees; because this describes the King’s own character (not a forensic imputation-to-a-sinner clause as in Rom 3-4), the accompanying raug suav tias ncaj ncees qualifier is not required here — this is a Christological-character use, not a justification-of-the-sinner use. Insert a teaching note distinguishing the two uses so students do not conflate them.
4Salvation/Save (yasha / sōzō)kev cawm dim / cawm, mandatory Christ-anchorZech 9:9 (“having salvation”); 10:6 (“I will save the house of Joseph”)Use kev cawm dim / cawm identically. In 9:9, anchor to God the Father as the vindicating agent of the King (Niphal passive), not to the King as self-savior. In 10:6, teach as a pre-Christological type fulfilled in Christ, per Rom 11:26’s all_israel_will_be_saved entry — do not treat 10:6 and Rom 11:26 as two different salvations; they are the same covenant promise at two redemptive-historical stages.
5Power (koach/chayil/dynamis)hwjchim, mandatory Vajtswv hwjchim qualifierZech 4:6 “not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit”Mandatory qualifier applies without exception; this verse must display the contrastive “not…but” structure alongside Vaj Ntsuj Plig, directly reinforcing Rom 1:16’s identical pairing (Vajtswv hwjchim + gospel). Recommend co-teaching Zech 4:6 and Romans 1:16 as a single cross-Testament unit.
6Holy Spirit (ruach [divine] / pneuma hagion)Vaj Ntsuj Plig, mandatory Vaj-prefixZech 4:6; 12:10Mandatory prefix applies without exception. In 12:10 the phrase Vaj Ntsuj Plig uas coj txiaj ntsim thiab kev thov tuaj must retain BOTH the Vaj-prefix and the txiaj ntsim (never koob hmoov) qualifier simultaneously — see Rom 5:5 parallel (§4).
7Grace (chen / charis)txiaj ntsim, permanently forbidding koob hmoovZech 12:10 “Spirit of grace”Use txiaj ntsim identically. [FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION — CARRIED FORWARD]: the staff-name “Favor” (no’am) in Zech 11:7-14 is a different Hebrew word and a symbolic prop-name, not a theological grace-term — it must never be rendered txiaj ntsim even though “favor” is semantically adjacent in English. Keep Kev Zoo Siab (per 08_core_glossary.md #42) strictly separate from txiaj ntsim.
8Idoldab mlomZech 13:2Identical reuse; High risk carried forward unchanged.
9Remnant (she’erit / leimma)cov seemZech 8:6,11-12; 13:8-9Identical reuse; supports direct parallel to Rom 9:27 and Rom 11:5’s remnant argument (§4).
10Hope (tiqvah / elpis)kev cia siabZech 9:12 “prisoners of hope”Identical reuse; must be taught (per Romans forbidden-substitution table §3.2) as confident expectation grounded in God’s promise, not mere optimism — directly reinforced by the “prisoners” framing here (hope sustained under affliction, paralleling Rom 5:2-5, 8:24-25).
11Mercy (chesed / eleos)txoj kev khuv leejZech 7:9Identical reuse with the chesed-nuance teaching note from 07_semantic_analysis.md; kept lexically distinct from txiaj ntsim per the Rom 9/11 mercy-vs-grace distinction.
12Kingdom of Godlub Nceeg Vaj ntawm VajtswvZech 9:10; 14:9 (universal dominion/kingship)Identical reuse; teach Zech 14:9 (“the LORD shall be king over all the earth”) as the OT anchor-text for this Romans-TM phrase’s eschatological horizon.
13”Call on My Name” / calling on the Lord — forbidden hu-substitutiondescriptive phrasing anchored to ntseeg + lees paub, never ritual hu (soul-calling)Zech 13:9 “they shall call on my name”Directly inherits the Rom 10:9-13 forbidden-substitution rule verbatim (Romans §3.1); apply the identical descriptive phrase thov hu Kuv lub npe, ntseeg thiab lees paub tias Kuv yog lawv tus Vajtswv.
14Divine name (YHWH / kyrios)tus Tswv; extended in this package as tus TSWV for the Tetragrammatonall Zechariah occurrences of YHWHNever substitute a transliterated divine name (e.g., “Yehauvas”); this is a direct, non-negotiable extension of the Rom §3.1 forbidden-substitution precedent into the OT.
15Olive tree/grafting imagerytsob ntoo txiv alivZech 14:4 (Mount of Olives)Note: Zech 14:4’s “Mount of Olives” is a toponym, not the Rom 11:17-24 grafting metaphor; render place-name as Roob Txiv Aliv without importing the grafting teaching note — flag to prevent students conflating the two distinct olive-tree references.
16Sin/Iniquity (avon/hamartia)txhaum / kev txhaumZech 3:4,9; 13:1Identical reuse; High-risk caution on reparable-social-fault collision carried forward unchanged.
17Sanctification/holiness root (dawb huv)kev raug ua kom dawb huvZech 14:20-21 “Holy to the LORD”Reuses the root; teach as consecration-of-all-of-life, not ritual-inscription/amulet, per the identical caution already logged for the Romans sanctification entry.

Governing principle: wherever this table and 08_core_glossary.md appear to differ in wording for the same TM-anchored concept, this table’s Consistency Rule is authoritative for cross-referencing purposes, but neither document may contradict the underlying Romans TM string itself.

§4. Direct Parallels to the Romans Curriculum

The following are the strongest, most doctrinally load-bearing points of intersection between this Zechariah package and the existing Hmong Romans Language Package. These should be flagged for co-teaching or unit-linking wherever curricular sequencing allows.

Zechariah PassageRomans PassageShared ThemeRendering-Consistency Note
Zechariah 2:10-11; 8:20-23; 14:16Romans 15:9-12Gentile/nations inclusion in worship of Godlwm Haiv Neeg used identically in both curricula; teach as one unbroken prophetic-to-apostolic trajectory.
Zechariah 4:6Romans 1:16God’s power (not human might) as the operative force in salvation/restorationBoth require the mandatory Vajtswv hwjchim qualifier; recommend explicit side-by-side quotation in lesson materials.
Zechariah 8:12-13; 13:8-9Romans 9:27; Romans 11:5The remnant conceptcov seem used identically; both describe a divinely preserved minority within ethnic Israel.
Zechariah 9:9Romans 1:3-4; Romans 15:12Davidic Messianic kingshipLeej Tub ntawm Vajtswv (Romans TM son_of_god) should be cross-referenced when teaching Zech 9:9’s huab tais, to keep the Davidic-royal and divine-Sonship threads unified for students.
Zechariah 9:10; 14:9Romans TM kingdom_of_god (multiple Romans occurrences)Universal, global dominion of the Messianic Kinglub Nceeg Vaj ntawm Vajtswv reused identically; teach Zechariah as the OT horizon toward which Romans’ Kingdom language points.
Zechariah 10:6Romans 11:26 (all_israel_will_be_saved)Corporate salvation/restoration of God’s covenant peopleBoth use kev cawm dim/cawm; the Romans TM’s mandatory Christ-anchoring rule extends backward: Zech 10:6 must be taught as the same covenant promise Paul cites, at an earlier redemptive-historical stage, not a separate salvation.
Zechariah 12:10 (Spirit clause)Romans 5:5The Spirit poured out, producing love/grace-response in the heartBoth require Vaj Ntsuj Plig mandatory prefix; teach as the same Pentecostal outpouring reality (cf. Acts 2:17-21 bridging both).
Zechariah 12:10 (piercing clause)(no Romans occurrence directly; concept-linked to Romans 3:25 propitiation and Romans 5:8 “Christ died for us”)The atoning death of the MessiahKeep raug xuas nkaug (piercing, concrete/violent) lexically distinct from qhov theej txhoj kev txhaum (propitiation, Romans TM) — they describe the same event from two different angles (the wounding act vs. its atoning effect) and must not be merged into one term.
Zechariah 13:1Romans 3:25 (propitiation_atoning_sacrifice)Once-for-all cleansing from sin through the MessiahConcept-linked, not lexically identical; teach the fountain of 13:1 as typologically anticipating, not literally naming, the Romans 3:25 hilastērion.
Zechariah 13:9Romans 9:25-26 (Hosea covenant-formula catena)“They are my people… I am their God” covenant formulaStructurally identical covenant-formula argument (Paul quotes Hosea, not Zechariah, but the formula and its function — assuring a formerly-excluded/scattered people of covenant belonging — are the same); avoid implying Paul is quoting Zechariah directly (he is not) while still teaching the thematic unity.
Zechariah 9:12; all restoration promises generallyRomans 5:2-5; Romans 8:24-25; Romans 12:12; Romans 15:4,13Hope grounded in God’s promise, not mere optimismkev cia siab reused identically; Zechariah is a rich OT reservoir of exactly the promise-grounded hope Paul describes.
Zechariah 1:14-17; 8:1-3Romans 11:29 (“God’s gifts and call are irrevocable”)God’s zealous, unrelinquished covenant commitment to His peopleConcept-linked: Zechariah’s kev khib siab rau Xi-oo (zeal for Zion) is the emotional/relational ground of the very irrevocability Paul asserts in Rom 11:29; recommend explicit cross-reference in any lesson teaching Doctrine 5 (God’s Zeal for Zion) alongside Doctrine 8 of the Romans package (The Future of Israel).

§5. Coverage Confirmation

All fourteen chapters of Zechariah have been cross-referenced above against OT antecedents, NT quotations/allusions, Messianic typology, and the Romans curriculum baseline. No chapter was silently omitted; chapters contributing comparatively fewer direct cross-references (notably ch. 5) are logged explicitly rather than skipped. This matrix should be treated as a living document: any future Hmong curriculum drawing on passages quoted in this table (e.g., a Gospels or Revelation package) must consult §1’s Rendering-Consistency Rules before assigning a new Hmong gloss to any shared term.
