Doctrine Analysis
11 — Doctrine Analysis: 1 John (Full Book, Chapters 1–5)
0. Method and Scope
1 John is a short, five-chapter pastoral letter, but it is doctrinally dense and recursive: its major themes (light/darkness, love, abiding, new birth, testing spirits, assurance) are woven through the whole letter rather than confined to single blocks. This analysis therefore proceeds in two layers:
- Chapter-by-chapter walkthrough (§1–§5) — every chapter, in order, noting which doctrines
from
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonare active in that chapter, with specific verse-level supporting passages and chapter-specific translation-risk notes. - Consolidated doctrine matrix (§6) — one row per doctrine, drawing together supporting
passages from across the entire book, matching
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonexactly in name, risk tier, and review routing.
Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline’s risk_definitions exactly:
Critical/High → human theologian review; Medium → native speaker review; Low → automated review.
1 John contains no Low-risk doctrines at the doctrine level (individual terms may still be Low,
e.g., ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ-style low-risk vocabulary reused from Romans, but no whole doctrine in this
letter is Low risk).
1. Chapter 1 — Prologue, Fellowship, Light, Confession
1 John 1:1-4 — The Word of Life, eyewitness testimony
- Doctrine:
incarnation_of_christ(Critical) — the prologue’s emphatic tactile/eyewitness language (“heard…seen…looked upon…touched,” 1:1) establishes the historical concreteness of the incarnate ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ that chapters 2 and 4 will defend against denial. Never render with ಅವತಾರ vocabulary; Haridasa Krishna-bhakti daśāvatāra framing is the primary collision risk here even before the antichrist polemic of ch. 2/4 is reached. - Doctrine:
eyewitness_apostolic_testimony(Medium) — ಜೀವದ ವಾಕ್ಯ / ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಹೇಳುವುದು vocabulary must read as historical-forensic testimony, not devotional literary composition (contrast with treasured but categorically different vachana/kirtane literature). - Doctrine:
fellowship_with_god_and_believers(High) — 1:3’s stated purpose (“that you may have fellowship with us… and with the Father and his Son”) introduces ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ (reused exactly from Romans baseline) as the letter’s governing relational category.
1 John 1:5-7 — God is Light; walking in the light
- Doctrine:
god_is_light(Critical) — 1:5’s “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” is an identity statement, not an attribute statement. ಬೆಳಕು/ಕತ್ತಲೆ must be anchored explicitly to moral truthfulness (1:6-10), resisting collapse into Lingayat jyotirlinga imagery or generic jñāna-as-illumination. - Doctrine:
walking_in_the_light_practical_holiness(Medium) — 1:6-7’s ನಡೆಯುವುದು (walk/conduct) vocabulary is the practical outworking of the god_is_light doctrine; lower risk on its own but must stay tethered to the Critical doctrine above in review. - Doctrine:
fellowship_with_god_and_believers(High) — 1:7 ties ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ (“fellowship with one another”) directly to walking in the light and to the cleansing power of Christ’s blood.
1 John 1:8-10 — Confession and forgiveness of sin
- Doctrine:
confession_and_forgiveness_of_sin(High) — the chapter’s climactic claim (1:9, “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive”) must be rendered so that forgiveness rests on God’s own ನಂಬಿಗಸ್ತ (faithful) character and Christ’s work, not the penitent’s ritual performance. Distinguish ಶುದ್ಧೀಕರಿಸುವುದು from ritual-purity codes (ashaucha, ritual bathing) and from repeated folk/Shakta blood-offering practice. - Term risk: ರಕ್ತ (blood of Jesus, 1:7) — once-for-all completed atonement, not a repeatable ritual offering.
Chapter 1 summary: Introduces four doctrines at Critical/High tier (incarnation, god_is_light, fellowship, confession-and-forgiveness) plus one Medium (walking in the light) and one Medium (eyewitness testimony). No doctrine in ch. 1 is Low risk. All Critical/High items route to human theologian review; Medium items to native speaker review.
2. Chapter 2 — Advocacy, Obedience, Love/Hate, the World, Antichrist, Anointing
1 John 2:1-2 — Advocate and propitiation
- Doctrine:
propitiation_and_advocacy(Critical) — the chapter opens with Christ as ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಗಾರ (advocate) and ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ ಬಲಿ (propitiation/atoning sacrifice). Bare ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ names a self-performed Hindu expiatory act; the compound with ಬಲಿ and the “he himself is” framing must preserve God’s own initiative. Advocacy must remain exclusive — not assimilated to ritual intermediation through saints, gurus, ancestors, or an ishta-devata.
1 John 2:3-11 — Obedience, the new/old commandment, love and hate as light/darkness test
- Doctrine:
obedience_and_commandment_keeping(Medium) — 2:3-8’s ಆಜ್ಞೆ/ಪಾಲಿಸುವುದು vocabulary is the fruit of relationship already established, not ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ-style compliance or kayaka-style sacred labor building standing. - Doctrine:
walking_in_the_light_practical_holiness(Medium) — 2:9-11 extends the light/darkness ethical test specifically to love/hate of the brother. - Doctrine:
love_for_the_brethren_evidence_of_new_birth(High) — 2:9-11 gives the letter’s first full statement of the love-hate/light-darkness test; ಸಹೋದರ established here as caste-neutral. - Term risk: ಹೊಸ ಆಜ್ಞೆ / ಹಳೆಯ ಆಜ್ಞೆ (new/old commandment, 2:7-8) — ancient yet newly realized.
1 John 2:12-14 — Pastoral address to children, fathers, young men
- Reviewed — no new doctrine risk beyond
confession_and_forgiveness_of_sin(forgiveness “for his name’s sake,” 2:12, already covered above) andeyewitness_apostolic_testimony-adjacent language (“known him who is from the beginning”). No new term-level risk; flagged as reviewed for completeness.
1 John 2:15-17 — Do not love the world
- Doctrine:
overcoming_the_world(Critical) andworldliness_diagnostic(Medium) — introduces ಲೋಕ in its negative, systemic sense (contrast with 4:9’s positive sense, object of God’s saving love) and the threefold diagnostic (ಶರೀರದ ಆಶೆ / ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳ ಆಶೆ / ಜೀವನದ ಜಂಬ). Must not be rendered through a māyā-as-illusion-to-be-escaped frame; this is a real moral-spiritual system opposed by faith, not escaped via enlightenment.
1 John 2:18-23 — Antichrist, denial of the Father and Son
- Doctrine:
antichrist_denial_of_christ(Critical) — ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ ವಿರೋಧಿ is a specifically christological denial category; never ಅಸುರ/ರಾಕ್ಷಸ (Puranic demon-antagonist vocabulary). - Doctrine:
deity_and_sonship_of_christ(Critical) — 2:22-23’s “whoever denies the Son does not have the Father” is the letter’s first full statement of the inseparable Father-Son confession, parallel to Romans 10:9’s ಯೇಸು ಕರ್ತನಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ confession structure.
1 John 2:24-27 — Abiding, anointing
- Doctrine:
mutual_indwelling_abiding(Critical) — first major cluster of ನೆಲೆಗೊಂಡಿರುವುದು (abide) language (2:24, 27), anticipating the ch. 4 core-passage density. Flag against Aikya-merger and Advaitic ātman-Brahman assimilation from the first occurrence, not only at 4:12-16. - Doctrine:
anointing_of_the_spirit(High) — ಅಭಿಷೇಕ’s dominant Karnataka association is external ceremonial anointing (Mahamastakabhisheka at Shravanabelagola); must be consistently glossed as the Spirit’s internal, universally-given teaching presence.
1 John 2:28-29 — Confidence at his coming; born of him
- Doctrine:
assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical) — early appearance of ಭರವಸೆ (confidence/boldness) tied to Christ’s return. - Doctrine:
new_birth_regeneration(Critical) — 2:29’s ದೇವರಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವರು opens the letter’s new-birth theme, continued through chs. 3-5.
Chapter 2 summary: The most doctrinally dense chapter after ch. 4, introducing six Critical-tier doctrines (propitiation_and_advocacy, overcoming_the_world, antichrist_denial, deity_and_sonship, mutual_indwelling_abiding, new_birth_regeneration) plus two High-tier (love_for_the_brethren, anointing_of_the_spirit) and two Medium-tier (obedience, worldliness_diagnostic) doctrines. All Critical/High route to human theologian review.
3. Chapter 3 — Children of God, Love in Deed, Assurance, the Seed of God
1 John 3:1-3 — Children of God, future hope, purification
- Doctrine:
children_of_god_identity(High) — 3:1-2’s ದೇವರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು must not be flattened into a pantheistic “all beings already divine” reading; distinguish from Romans baseline’s ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ (legal-adoption emphasis) as two complementary, non-contradictory pictures of the same secure sonship. - Term risk: ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ (hope, Medium) and ನಿರ್ಮಲಗೊಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು (purify oneself, Medium) — the latter is the believer’s responsive effort, distinguished from ಪವಿತ್ರ (God’s declarative holiness, Romans baseline).
1 John 3:4-10 — Sin, the devil, born of God, the seed of God
- Doctrine:
new_birth_regeneration(Critical) — 3:9’s “God’s seed abides in him” (ದೇವರ ಬೀಜ) is the letter’s most vivid new-birth image; distinguish from the Vedantic ātman-as-innate-divine- spark image — this seed is implanted only through faith-based new birth, not a universal human endowment. - Doctrine:
children_of_god_identity(High) — 3:10’s dividing line (“children of God” vs. “children of the devil”) is explicit and must not be softened. - Term risk: ಸೈತಾನ (devil, High) — never ದೆವ್ವ (generic folk-religious ghost/possession category); preserves the personal, singular, fallen-angelic figure.
1 John 3:11-18 — Love for the brethren, Cain as counter-example, love in deed and truth
- Doctrine:
love_for_the_brethren_evidence_of_new_birth(High) — 3:11-18 gives the doctrine’s fullest ethical-test statement (laying down one’s life, material generosity, 3:16-17). - Term risk: ಕಾರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ (ಪ್ರೀತಿ) (love in deed and truth, Medium) — practical, verifiable love, not sentiment alone.
1 John 3:19-24 — Assurance before God, confidence, keeping his commandments, abiding
- Doctrine:
assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical) — 3:19-21’s “if our heart condemns us… God is greater than our heart” is the letter’s key conscience-vs-God’s-character passage. - Term risk: ಹೃದಯ ಆಪಾದಿಸುವುದು / ಖಂಡಿಸುವುದು (heart condemns, Medium-High) — assurance rests on God’s greater knowledge, not conscience’s fluctuating self-verdict.
- Doctrine:
obedience_and_commandment_keeping(Medium) — 3:22-24 ties answered prayer and mutual indwelling to commandment-keeping. - Doctrine:
mutual_indwelling_abiding(Critical) — 3:24’s “whoever keeps his commandments abides in him, and he in him” — second major abiding cluster, reinforcing the ch. 2 introduction ahead of the ch. 4 core-passage density.
Chapter 3 summary: Introduces/reinforces children_of_god_identity (High, new in this
chapter), continues new_birth_regeneration, love_for_the_brethren, assurance_of_salvation,
mutual_indwelling_abiding (all Critical/High, carried from or into other chapters), plus Medium
terms (hope, purify, love in deed, obedience). No Low-risk doctrine in this chapter.
4. Chapter 4 — Testing the Spirits; God is Love (Core Passage, 4:7-21)
1 John 4:1-6 — Testing the spirits
- Doctrine:
testing_the_spirits(High) — ಆತ್ಮ/ಆತ್ಮಗಳು collision risk with Vedantic ātman is at its sharpest here; must be glossed as discernment of rival external spiritual influences/ teachers, not private philosophical introspection. - Doctrine:
incarnation_of_christ(Critical) — 4:2-3’s decisive test (“every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God”) is the letter’s single most concentrated incarnation-and-antichrist proof-text; ಶರೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದ must draw exactly on the Romans baseline’s ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ vocabulary, never ಅವತಾರ. - Doctrine:
antichrist_denial_of_christ(Critical) — 4:3’s “spirit of antichrist” names the same christological-denial category as 2:18-23.
1 John 4:7-21 — CORE PASSAGE: God is Love; fellowship; abiding; propitiation; assurance This is the theological anchor of the curriculum. Every doctrine below is at peak concentration in this single core passage and must receive the most careful Phase 2 handling:
- Doctrine:
god_is_love(Critical) — 4:8, 16’s “God is love” is the single highest-risk doctrinal phrase in the whole letter. Must never soften to an attributive “God is loving,” which would read as compatible with Shakta-tradition compassion-as-one-attribute-among-several theology. - Doctrine:
love_as_gods_prior_initiative(High) — 4:10, 19 (“not that we loved God, but that he loved us… we love because he first loved us”) — priority must not be assimilated to karma- merit economy, Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic, or Haridasa bhakti’s surrender-answered-by-favor pattern. - Doctrine:
propitiation_and_advocacy(Critical) — 4:10 restates the ch. 2 doctrine within the love-passage itself (“sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins”). - Doctrine:
incarnation_of_christ(Critical) — 4:9, 14 (“God sent his only Son into the world,” “the Father has sent his Son as Savior of the world”) — includes the ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ (only/unique Son) term, which must not be softened toward one avatar-descent among several. - Doctrine:
mutual_indwelling_abiding(Critical) — the letter’s highest-frequency use of ನೆಲೆ- ಗೊಂಡಿರುವುದು (μένω, 6x in 4:12-16 alone). This is the single most acute occurrence of the Aikya-merger/Advaitic-identity collision risk in the entire book and requires mandatory theologian review at every instance within this passage. - Doctrine:
fellowship_with_god_and_believers(High) — 4:12-16 ties mutual abiding directly to fellowship; the two doctrines share vocabulary and must be reviewed together to avoid conflation (per the registry’s explicit cross-reference note). - Doctrine:
love_for_the_brethren_evidence_of_new_birth(High) — 4:7-8, 20-21 frame the whole passage: love for the brethren as evidence that one is “born of God” and “knows God”; 4:20-21’s “if anyone says ‘I love God’ and hates his brother, he is a liar” is the doctrine’s sharpest statement in the book. - Doctrine:
assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical) — 4:17-18 (“perfect love casts out fear… he who fears is not perfected in love”) introduces the ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸು/ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ (perfected) term and the ಭಯ/ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ (fear/punishment) pair; distinguish God’s love-secured assurance from the Lingayat shatsthala path’s uncertain, incremental attainment. - Doctrine:
deity_and_sonship_of_christ(Critical) — 4:15’s confession (“whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him”) repeats the confession-formula pattern from 2:23, now fused with the abiding doctrine; render consistently with 2:23 and 4:2 per the cross-document consistency principle inherited from the Romans baseline (cf. Romans 10:9).
Chapter 4 summary: The doctrinal center of gravity of the whole letter and the curriculum’s core passage. Nine of the registry’s 20 doctrines requiring theologian review are active in this one chapter (testing_the_spirits, incarnation_of_christ, antichrist_denial_of_christ, god_is_love, love_as_gods_prior_initiative, propitiation_and_advocacy, mutual_indwelling_abiding, fellowship_with_god_and_believers, love_for_the_brethren_evidence_of_new_birth, assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life, deity_and_sonship_of_christ — eleven, in fact). Phase 2 segment processing for 4:7-21 must treat every segment as requiring theologian review by default.
5. Chapter 5 — Faith Overcomes the World, Threefold Witness, Assurance, Sin unto Death, Idols
1 John 5:1-5 — Born of God, love, keeping commandments, overcoming the world by faith
- Doctrine:
new_birth_regeneration(Critical) — 5:1, 4, 18 continue the born-of-God theme. - Doctrine:
obedience_and_commandment_keeping(Medium) — 5:2-3 ties love of God’s children to commandment-keeping “and his commandments are not burdensome.” - Doctrine:
overcoming_the_world(Critical) — 5:4-5’s “whoever is born of God overcomes the world… this is the victory… our faith” is the doctrine’s climactic statement. ಜಯಿಸುವುದು (overcome) here directly parallels the Jain “Jina” (Conqueror) category prominent in Karnataka’s Digambara Jain heritage (Shravanabelagola, Moodbidri, Karkala); victory here is grounded in faith and gifted new birth, never ascetic self-conquest of karma.
1 John 5:6-12 — The threefold witness, testimony concerning the Son
- Doctrine:
threefold_witness_to_the_son(High) — ನೀರು, ರಕ್ತ, ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ as convergent, legally-toned testimony, not private mystical revelation. Textual-critical note (Johannine Comma) flagged for translator awareness; follow the destination Bible’s established base text. - Doctrine:
assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical) — 5:11-13 states the doctrine’s clearest propositional form: “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son… that you may know that you have eternal life.” ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ must never be rendered with ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ nor read through an Aikya-merger lens. - Doctrine:
deity_and_sonship_of_christ(Critical) — 5:10-13 reiterates confession-of-the-Son language consistent with 2:23 and 4:15.
1 John 5:13-15 — Confidence in prayer
- Doctrine:
assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical) — ಭರವಸೆ (confidence) continues.
1 John 5:16-17 — Sin leading to death / not leading to death
- Doctrine:
sin_unto_death_pastoral_distinction(High) — a pastorally sensitive distinction requiring theologian review to avoid inducing false assurance or unwarranted despair; must be kept distinct from an impersonal karmic ledger of sin-weight accumulated across lifetimes.
1 John 5:18-19 — Born of God does not keep on sinning; the evil one; the whole world lies in the evil one
- Doctrine:
new_birth_regeneration(Critical),overcoming_the_world(Critical, 5:19’s ಲೋಕ in its negative systemic sense) — continued. - Term risk: ಕೆಡುಕನು/ದುಷ್ಟನು (the evil one, High) — identified with ಸೈತಾನ (3:8) as the same personal adversary, not an impersonal evil force or karmic residue.
1 John 5:20-21 — The true God; final warning against idols
- Doctrine:
rejection_of_idolatry(Critical) — the letter’s closing verse and its most culturally sensitive statement. Genuine but only partial convergence with the historic Lingayat rejection of temple-idol worship in favor of the personal ishtalinga; the convergence is partial because the ishtalinga itself remains a mediating physical object, whereas 5:21 excludes any mediating physical object whatsoever. Given the dominance of mūrti-pūjā (temple image-worship) in Karnataka, this verse requires mandatory theologian review and pastoral sensitivity in Phase 2. - Doctrine:
deity_and_sonship_of_christ/assurance_of_salvation_and_eternal_life(Critical) — 5:20 pairs ಸತ್ಯದೇವರು (the true God) with “his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life,” a dense triune-and-soteriological closing statement.
Chapter 5 summary: Brings the letter’s major doctrines to their most propositional, summary form (new birth, overcoming the world, threefold witness, assurance/eternal life, sin unto death, idolatry). Every doctrine active in this chapter is Critical or High tier except the Medium-tier obedience doctrine; no doctrine in ch. 5 is Low risk.
6. Consolidated Doctrine Matrix (Full Book)
This table is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json: same doctrine names, same risk
tiers, same review routing. Supporting passages are drawn from across the whole book.
| # | Doctrine | Risk | Supporting Passages (1 John) | Translation Risk (grounded reason) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | God is Light | Critical | 1:5-7; 2:8-11 | Identity claim (“God IS light”), not attribute; must anchor to moral truthfulness (1:6-10) against Lingayat jyotirlinga and pan-Hindu jñāna-as-illumination associations | Human theologian |
| 2 | God is Love | Critical | 4:8; 4:16 | Highest-risk phrase in the letter; being-defining identity claim vs. Shakta-tradition “compassionate as one attribute among several” | Human theologian |
| 3 | Fellowship with God and One Another | High | 1:3-7; 2:24; 4:12-16 | Must distinguish from generic social bonding (ಸ್ನೇಹ) and from the merger-risk of the abiding doctrine, with which it shares vocabulary | Human theologian |
| 4 | Mutual Indwelling — Abiding in God and God in Us | Critical | 2:6; 2:24; 2:27-28; 3:24; 4:12-16 | Highest-frequency new term (μένω, 6x in 4:12-16); acute Aikya-merger and Advaitic ātman-Brahman collision risk | Human theologian |
| 5 | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | High | 1:8-10; 2:1-2 | Must distinguish from Hindu ritual-purity codes and repeated folk/Shakta blood-offering; forgiveness grounded in God’s faithful character, not ritual performance | Human theologian |
| 6 | Christ’s Propitiation and Advocacy | Critical | 2:1-2; 4:10 | Bare ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ implies self-performed Hindu expiation; advocacy must stay exclusive, not assimilated to ritual intermediation via saints/gurus/ishta-devata | Human theologian |
| 7 | Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | High | 2:9-11; 3:10-18; 4:7-8; 4:20-21 | Required, non-optional evidence, not devotional feeling on the ಭಕ್ತಿ/ಪ್ರೇಮ model; “brother” must stay caste-neutral | Human theologian |
| 8 | New Birth (Regeneration) | Critical | 2:29; 3:1-2; 3:9-10; 4:7; 5:1; 5:4; 5:18 | Never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ; distinguish from caste-conditioned ದ್ವಿಜ status and from Vedantic ātman-as-innate-spark imagery | Human theologian |
| 9 | The Incarnation of Christ | Critical | 1:1-3; 4:2-3; 4:9-10; 4:14 | Never ಅವತಾರ; acute for Haridasa daśāvatāra readers and, differently, for Lingayat readers who might receive Christ as an Aikya-attained Sharana figure | Human theologian |
| 10 | Antichrist — Denial of the Incarnate Son | Critical | 2:18-23; 4:1-3 | Specifically christological denial category; never ಅಸುರ/ರಾಕ್ಷಸ Puranic demon-antagonist vocabulary | Human theologian |
| 11 | Deity and Sonship of Christ | Critical | 2:22-23; 3:8; 4:15; 5:5; 5:10-13; 5:20 | Never reduced to an Aikya-attained Sharana teacher or one ishta-devata among several | Human theologian |
| 12 | Testing the Spirits | High | 4:1-6 | ಆತ್ಮ collides with Vedantic ātman; must be glossed as discerning rival external influences, not private introspection | Human theologian |
| 13 | Anointing of the Spirit | High | 2:20; 2:27 | ಅಭಿಷೇಕ’s dominant sense is external ceremonial anointing (Mahamastakabhisheka); must be glossed as internal, non-ritual, universally-given teaching presence | Human theologian |
| 14 | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | Critical | 3:19-21; 4:17-18; 5:11-13; 5:13-15; 5:20 | ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ never ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ nor Aikya-merger; assurance rests on God’s character, not fluctuating conscience or incremental shatsthala attainment | Human theologian |
| 15 | Overcoming the World | Critical | 2:15-17; 4:4; 5:4-5; 5:19 | Parallels the Jain “Jina” (Conqueror) category salient in Karnataka (Shravanabelagola, Moodbidri, Karkala); victory here is by faith/gift, not ascetic self-conquest | Human theologian |
| 16 | Rejection of Idolatry — Exclusive Worship of the True God | Critical | 5:20-21 | Partial convergence with Lingayat rejection of temple idols (ishtalinga still a mediating object; 1 John excludes any mediating object) — most culturally sensitive verse in the letter | Human theologian |
| 17 | Love as God’s Prior, Unmerited Initiative | High | 4:10; 4:19 | Must not be assimilated to karma-merit economy, Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic, or Haridasa bhakti’s surrender-answered-by-favor pattern | Human theologian |
| 18 | Obedience and Commandment-Keeping | Medium | 2:3-8; 3:22-24; 5:2-3 | Fruit/evidence of relationship already established, not ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ-style compliance or kayaka-style labor building standing | Native speaker |
| 19 | Eyewitness Apostolic Testimony | Medium | 1:1-3; 4:14; 5:9-11 | Anchored in verifiable eyewitness history, distinct from treasured but categorically different vachana/kirtane devotional literature | Native speaker |
| 20 | Identity as Children of God | High | 3:1-2; 3:9-10 | Explicit dividing line (3:10) must not be flattened into a pantheistic “all beings already divine children” reading | Human theologian |
| 21 | Sin Leading to Death (Pastoral Distinction) | High | 5:16-17 | Pastorally sensitive; risks false assurance or despair if mishandled; must stay distinct from an impersonal cross-lifetime karmic ledger | Human theologian |
| 22 | The Threefold Witness to the Son | High | 5:6-11 | Legally-toned, convergent, multiple-witness testimony, not private mystical revelation; textual-critical (Johannine Comma) caution flagged | Human theologian |
| 23 | The Threefold Diagnostic of Worldliness | Medium | 2:15-17 | Standard moral vocabulary; doctrinally tied to overcoming_the_world and reviewed alongside it | Native speaker |
| 24 | Walking in the Light (Practical Holiness) | Medium | 1:6-7; 2:6; 2:9-11 | Ethical/relational conduct; must not merge with mystical-illumination imagery (Critical-tier risk lives in god_is_light, not here) | Native speaker |
Totals (matching doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly): Critical = 11, High = 9, Medium = 4,
Low = 0. Total requiring human theologian review = 20. Total requiring native speaker review = 4.
Total automated-only = 0.
7. Cross-Doctrine Interaction Notes (Full Book)
- Abiding vs. Fellowship (μένω vs. κοινωνία): These share surface vocabulary in Kannada (ನೆಲೆಗೊಂಡಿರುವುದು and ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ both describe ongoing relational nearness to God). Reviewers must keep the Critical-tier merger risk (mutual_indwelling_abiding) analytically separate from the High-tier fellowship doctrine even where both terms co-occur, as they do throughout 4:12-16.
- ಲೋಕ (world) dual sense: The same Kannada term serves both the negative, systemic sense (do not love the world, 2:15-17; overcome the world, 5:4-5, 19) and the positive sense (God so loved the world / Christ as Savior of the world, 4:9, 14). Every occurrence must be sense-disambiguated in translator notes; conflating the two senses would either soften the world-renunciation passages or wrongly universalize salvation apart from faith.
- ಆತ್ಮ vs. ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ: The generic, lower-case “spirit(s) to be tested” (4:1-6) must never be confused in rendering or capitalization convention with ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, the personal Holy Spirit (reused exactly from the Romans baseline). This distinction is load-bearing for the testing_the_spirits doctrine.
- Confession formula consistency: 2:23 (“whoever denies the Son does not have the Father”), 4:2-3 (“confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh”), 4:15 (“confesses that Jesus is the Son of God”), and 5:1/5:5/5:10-13 all restate the same christological confession pattern. Per the Romans baseline’s cross-document consistency rule (cf. Romans 10:9’s ಯೇಸು ಕರ್ತನಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ), all four occurrences must be rendered with matching, consistent Kannada phrasing so that learners recognize the recurring confession across the letter.
- Idolatry and Overcoming the World as bookend doctrines: 2:15-17’s worldliness diagnostic and 5:19-21’s closing idols warning form an inclusio around the letter’s ethical exhortation; both connect to (but must be kept doctrinally distinct from) Karnataka’s own historic reform movements (Lingayat anti-idol reform; Jain ascetic world-renunciation), which offer partial, genuine cultural resonance without doctrinal equivalence.
8. Chapters Reviewed with No Additional New-Term Risk
In keeping with the full-book-coverage mandate, the following sections were reviewed in full and found to introduce no doctrine or term beyond those already catalogued above; they are noted here explicitly rather than silently omitted:
- 1 John 2:12-14 (pastoral address to “little children, fathers, young men”) — reviewed; draws only on already-catalogued forgiveness and eyewitness-knowledge vocabulary, no new risk.
- 1 John 3:4-8’s legal-diagnostic restatement of sin (“sin is lawlessness”) — reviewed; ಪಾಪ
reused exactly from the Romans baseline, no new risk beyond the existing
sinentry. - 1 John 5:6b-8’s water/blood/Spirit enumeration outside the witness-doctrine core — reviewed
as part of
threefold_witness_to_the_sonabove; no separate doctrine required.
No chapter of 1 John was found to be doctrinally inert; every chapter (1–5) contributes at least one Critical or High risk doctrine, consistent with the letter’s densely recursive theological style.
This document is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (same 24 doctrines, same

Critical Risk Doctrines
God is Light
Kannada name: ದೇವರು ಬೆಳಕಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ
Key terms: light, darkness, walk_conduct, confess_sin, cleanse
Review routing: Human theologian
This is an essential-nature identity statement (‘God is light,’ 1:5), not merely ‘God is enlightening.’ Karnataka’s religious landscape is saturated with light-of-the-divine imagery — the Lingayat/Veerashaiva jyotirlinga (light-form of Shiva) and the pan-Hindu equation of moksha/enlightenment with inner illumination dispelling avidyā (ignorance) through jñāna. 1 John’s own stated referent for light is moral truthfulness and freedom from sin (1:6-10), not mystical illumination or gnosis; this anchor must not be left implicit.
God is Love
Kannada name: ದೇವರು ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಆಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ
Key terms: love, born_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
The single highest-risk doctrinal phrase in the letter. Karnataka’s Shakta tradition (Chamundeshwari of Mysore, the former royal tutelary goddess) and popular devotional Hinduism readily affirm that a deity is compassionate/loving as one attribute among several (also fierce, also just, sometimes capricious in folk tellings). 1 John’s claim is categorically stronger: love is co-extensive with God’s undivided being, revealed exclusively in the sending of the Son (4:9-10), not a generalized cosmic compassion or one facet of a multi-attribute deity. Must never be softened to an attributive ‘God is loving.‘
Mutual Indwelling — Abiding in God and God in Us
Kannada name: ದೇವರಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವರು ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಗೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆ
Key terms: abide_remain
Review routing: Human theologian
The letter’s highest-frequency new theological term (μένω, 6x in 4:12-16 alone) carries acute risk of assimilation to (1) the Veerashaiva/Lingayat shatsthala path’s culminating Aikya stage, where the devotee’s individual identity merges into and dissolves within Shiva — already forbidden for ‘salvation’ in the Romans baseline — and (2) Advaita Vedanta’s non-dual teaching that the individual ātman is ultimately identical with universal Brahman. 1 John’s abiding is a mutual, reciprocal communion between two parties who both remain personally distinct, never a merger of being.
Christ’s Propitiation and Advocacy
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ ಬಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ
Key terms: propitiation, advocate
Review routing: Human theologian
Bare ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ names a self-performed Hindu penance/expiatory act (fasting, pilgrimage, ritual bathing) undertaken by the guilty party — the opposite of this doctrine’s logic, in which God himself provides and sends the atoning sacrifice. Christ’s advocacy before the Father (2:1) must likewise be kept exclusive and unique, not assimilated to a pattern of ritual intermediation through saints, gurus, ancestors, or an ishta-devata mediating to a more remote high God.
New Birth (Regeneration)
Kannada name: ದೇವರಿಂದ ಹೊಸ ಜನ್ಮ
Key terms: born_of_god, children_of_god, seed_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (reincarnation, already forbidden in the Romans baseline). Also distinguish from ದ್ವಿಜ, the caste-conditioned ‘twice-born’ status conferred by the sacred-thread (upanayana) ceremony on specific castes — new birth in 1 John is universal, faith-based, and open to every believer regardless of caste, the opposite of a caste-restricted status marker. The ‘seed of God’ (3:9) must also be distinguished from the Vedantic image of the ātman as an innate divine spark present in all by nature.
The Incarnation of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ
Key terms: word_of_life, come_in_the_flesh, only_son
Review routing: Human theologian
Never ಅವತಾರ. Especially salient for readers formed by coastal Karnataka’s Haridasa Krishna-bhakti tradition (centered at Udupi), for whom a divine being taking bodily form is a familiar and repeatable category (daśāvatāra). A distinct risk applies to Lingayat-background readers, who themselves reject avatar theology but may instead receive Christ as an exceptionally realized human Sharana figure who attained Aikya, rather than the eternal, uncreated Son uniquely and permanently taking on flesh.
Antichrist — Denial of the Incarnate Son
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ ವಿರೋಧಿಗಳ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ ನಿರಾಕರಣೆ
Key terms: antichrist, come_in_the_flesh, spirit_of_error_and_truth
Review routing: Human theologian
ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ ವಿರೋಧಿ names a specifically christological denial (of the Father-Son relationship and the true incarnation), not a generic mythological villain-figure; never render with ಅಸುರ or ರಾಕ್ಷಸ, Puranic demon-antagonist vocabulary that would recast the doctrinal content as folk mythology.
Deity and Sonship of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇವತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ
Key terms: son_of_god, only_son, confess_christ
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s eternal, unique, co-equal Sonship must never be reduced to the nearest available Lingayat category — a divinely-elevated human Sharana teacher who attained Aikya — nor treated as one devotional lord among several a Haridasa-bhakti devotee might personally select as ishta-devata.
Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Kannada name: ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವದ ಭರವಸೆ
Key terms: eternal_life, confidence_boldness, heart_condemns, day_of_judgment
Review routing: Human theologian
Assurance rests on God’s own greater knowledge and unchanging character, not on the fluctuating verdict of conscience nor on the Lingayat shatsthala path’s uncertain, incremental attainment toward Aikya. ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ (eternal life) must never be conflated with ಮೋಕ್ಷ or ಮುಕ್ತಿ (release from an impersonal rebirth cycle, already forbidden in the Romans baseline) nor with the Aikya doctrine’s final merger of identity.
Overcoming the World
Kannada name: ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಜಯಿಸುವಿಕೆ
Key terms: overcome_the_world, world, faith, evil_one
Review routing: Human theologian
Karnataka has a substantial historic Digambara Jain population and pilgrimage geography (the Bahubali/Gommateshwara monolith at Shravanabelagola; Moodbidri and Karkala’s temple clusters). Jainism’s central religious category is precisely ‘the Jina,’ the spiritual ‘Conqueror’ who overcomes karma and worldly bondage through rigorous ascetic self-discipline and renunciation. 1 John 5:4-5 uses closely parallel victory-language but grounds the victory in faith and the gift of new birth, not in self-achieved ascetic conquest.
Rejection of Idolatry — Exclusive Worship of the True God
Kannada name: ವಿಗ್ರಹಾರಾಧನೆಯ ನಿರಾಕರಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸತ್ಯದೇವರ ಆರಾಧನೆ
Key terms: true_god, idols
Review routing: Human theologian
There is a genuine but only partial convergence with the historic Lingayat/Veerashaiva reform movement’s own rejection of temple-idol worship in favor of the personal, worn ishtalinga — the convergence is partial because the ishtalinga itself remains a physical object mediating divine presence, whereas 1 John 5:21 excludes any mediating physical object of worship whatsoever, directed to the invisible, true, triune God alone. Given the dominance of temple image-worship (mūrti-pūjā) in Karnataka’s religious landscape, this closing warning is the letter’s most culturally sensitive verse and must be handled pastorally.
High Risk Doctrines
Fellowship with God and One Another
Kannada name: ದೇವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ
Key terms: fellowship, walk_conduct, abide_remain
Review routing: Human theologian
Fellowship (ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ) with a personal God and with fellow believers must be distinguished both from generic social bonding (ಸ್ನೇಹ) and from the meditative merger/dissolution risk documented under the mutual_indwelling_abiding doctrine below, since the two doctrines share vocabulary (μένω) and are easily conflated.
Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Kannada name: ಪಾಪದ ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ಷಮೆ
Key terms: confess_sin, forgive, cleanse, blood_of_jesus, faithful
Review routing: Human theologian
Confession-and-cleansing must be distinguished from Hindu ritual-purity codes (ashaucha, ritual bathing) and from the repeated blood-offering practices of Karnataka folk/Shakta religion (animal sacrifice to village deities and Chamundeshwari-type goddesses to appease or petition). God’s forgiveness in 1:9 is grounded in his own faithful and righteous character and Christ’s completed sacrifice, not in the penitent’s ritual performance or merit.
Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Kannada name: ಸಹೋದರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಹೊಸ ಜನ್ಮದ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ
Key terms: love, brother, born_of_god, new_and_old_commandment
Review routing: Human theologian
ಪ್ರೀತಿ for the brethren is the required, non-optional evidence of new birth, not a devotional feeling on the model of ಭಕ್ತಿ (chosen surrender to a deity) or ಪ್ರೇಮ (Haridasa Krishna-bhakti romantic devotion). ‘Brother’ must retain its caste-and-community-neutral sense throughout, consonant with the Romans baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine.
Testing the Spirits
Kannada name: ಆತ್ಮಗಳನ್ನು ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುವಿಕೆ
Key terms: test_the_spirits, spirit_generic, spirit_of_error_and_truth
Review routing: Human theologian
ಆತ್ಮ is also the standard Kannada term for ātman, the individual self/soul of Hindu (especially Advaita Vedantic) philosophy, held to be ultimately identical with impersonal Brahman. Kannada readers may default to a philosophical ‘testing one’s inner consciousness’ reading rather than the letter’s intended sense: discerning between rival external spiritual influences/teachers, of whom only the (capitalized, personal) ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ is the genuine Spirit of God.
Anointing of the Spirit
Kannada name: ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮನ ಅಭಿಷೇಕ
Key terms: anointing, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
ಅಭಿಷೇಕ’s dominant cultural association in Karnataka is external, ceremonial ritual anointing of a deity’s image or a person of high status (most famously the Mahamastakabhisheka, the once-in-twelve-years anointing of the Bahubali monolith at Shravanabelagola). 1 John’s χρῖσμα must be consistently glossed as the Spirit’s internal, universally-given, non-ritual teaching presence, not an external rite performed on an image or dignitary.
Love as God’s Prior, Unmerited Initiative
Kannada name: ದೇವರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ - ಮೊದಲ ಮತ್ತು ಅನರ್ಹಿತ ಕ್ರಿಯೆ
Key terms: love, propitiation
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s love originates unilaterally, prior to and unconditioned by any human devotional response. This priority must not be assimilated to the karma-merit economy, to the Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic (favor demonstrated through disciplined sacred work and sharing), or to the Haridasa bhakti pattern in which a devotee’s chosen surrender is answered by the deity’s favor — here God’s love precedes and is independent of any human initiative whatsoever.
Identity as Children of God
Kannada name: ದೇವರ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಗುರುತು
Key terms: children_of_god, seed_of_god, devil
Review routing: Human theologian
An exclusive, faith-conditioned identity with an explicit dividing line (‘children of God’ versus ‘children of the devil,’ 3:10) that must not be flattened into a pantheistic claim that all beings are, by nature, already divine children — a reading that some Vedantic-influenced hearers may otherwise supply by default.
Sin Leading to Death (Pastoral Distinction)
Kannada name: ಮರಣಕ್ಕೆ ನಡೆಸುವ ಪಾಪದ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ
Key terms: sin_leading_to_death
Review routing: Human theologian
A pastorally sensitive distinction with a long interpretive history; mistranslation risks inducing either false assurance or unwarranted despair. Must also be kept distinct from an impersonal karmic ledger of sin-weight accumulated across lifetimes.
The Threefold Witness to the Son
Kannada name: ಮಗನ ಕುರಿತಾದ ಮೂರು ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಗಳು
Key terms: threefold_witness, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
Grounds the church’s confession in multiple, convergent, legally-toned testimony (echoing OT multiple-witness standards), not a private mystical or inner revelation. Textual-critical caution: the disputed ‘Johannine Comma’ addition found in some manuscript traditions should follow the destination Bible’s established base-text tradition; this entry flags terminology only.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Obedience and Commandment-Keeping
Kannada name: ಆಜ್ಞೆಗಳ ಪಾಲನೆ
Key terms: commandment, keep_commandments, new_and_old_commandment
Review routing: Native speaker review
Consistent with the Romans baseline’s obedience_of_faith doctrine, obedience here is the fruit and evidence of a relationship already established through new birth, not ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ-style compliance or kayaka-style sacred labor that itself builds standing before God.
Eyewitness Apostolic Testimony
Kannada name: ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಗಳ ಸಾಕ್ಷ್ಯ
Key terms: word_of_life, testify_testimony
Review routing: Native speaker review
The letter’s claims are anchored in verifiable eyewitness history (heard, seen, looked upon, touched, 1:1), not private spiritual experience. Distinguish this from vachana literature or Haridasa kirtane devotional compositions, which are genuinely treasured in Karnataka’s traditions but are not eyewitness apostolic testimony to the incarnate, risen Christ.
The Threefold Diagnostic of Worldliness
Kannada name: ಲೋಕದ ಗುಣಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ
Key terms: desires_of_flesh_eyes_pride_of_life, world
Review routing: Native speaker review
Standard moral-ethical vocabulary; low collision risk on its own, but doctrinally tied to the higher-risk overcoming_the_world doctrine above and should be reviewed alongside it for consistency.
Walking in the Light (Practical Holiness)
Kannada name: ಬೆಳಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವಿಕೆ
Key terms: light, darkness, walk_conduct
Review routing: Native speaker review
Describes ethical/relational conduct consistent with God’s moral nature; must not merge with mystical-illumination imagery (the Lingayat jyotirlinga concept, jñāna-as-light), which is treated as a Critical-tier risk under the separate god_is_light doctrine above.
