Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — Titus (Full Book)
Methodology Note
This analysis follows the Romans Language Package as binding authority. Every term already recorded in the baseline translation_memory.json is reused exactly as recorded (e.g., χάρις = ಕೃಪೆ, σωτηρία = ರಕ್ಷಣೆ, δικαιοσύνη = ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ, πνεῦμα ἅγιον = ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ). Only terms not already in the baseline are analyzed in full and assigned new provisional risk tiers, to be merged into the Titus-extended translation memory in a later step. The core passage (Titus 2:11–3:8) receives verse-by-verse treatment. All other chapters/sections receive chapter-level treatment of load-bearing terms only; sections contributing no new theological vocabulary are explicitly marked as such.
Titus is a short, densely doctrinal pastoral letter. Its major collision risk with Karnataka’s destination culture is threefold: (1) grace-as-trainer language (2:11-12) risking assimilation to guru-disciple self-cultivation models (Lingayat shatsthala, Haridasa sadhana); (2) the term παλιγγενεσία (“regeneration,” 3:5), whose literal root (“again-birth”) is dangerously proximate to the forbidden ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (rebirth/reincarnation); and (3) household/authority submission language (2:1-10; 3:1) which must be grounded in gospel transformation rather than either caste-hierarchy submission or a merit-earning kayaka-dasoha ethic.
PART A: Core Passage — Titus 2:11–3:8 (Verse-by-Verse)
Titus 2:11
Greek: Ἐπεφάνη γὰρ ἡ χάρις τοῦ θεοῦ σωτήριος πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις. Gloss: “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐπεφάνη | epephanē | ”was made to appear / shone forth” | aorist passive of ἐπιφαίνω; the dawning/breaking-in of a light or a person previously hidden; used of both divine epiphanies and the visible rising of a heavenly body | ”appeared,” “has appeared,” “dawned,” “was revealed” | Grace itself is personified as a decisive, historical, once-for-all in-breaking — the incarnation event, not a recurring or cyclical manifestation | High. Same verb root (ἐπιφαίνω) as 2:13 and 3:4; must be rendered with a term for a singular historical manifestation, never one that could suggest a repeatable divine descent (cf. baseline’s ಅವತಾರ prohibition for “incarnation”). Recommend ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷವಾಯಿತು / ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಯಿತು, consistently across all three occurrences (2:11, 2:13, 3:4). |
| χάρις τοῦ θεοῦ | charis tou theou | ”grace of God” | God’s unmerited favor, personified as an active agent in this verse | ”grace of God,” “God’s grace” | Reuse baseline: ಕೃಪೆ (kṛpe). Here grace is not a static gift but an acting, teaching subject (see v.12) — this personification must survive translation. | High (baseline term, reused exactly). |
| σωτήριος | sōtērios | ”saving, bringing salvation” | adjectival form of σωτηρία, “salvation-bringing" | "bringing salvation,” “salvation-bearing” | Modifies χάρις: grace’s very nature is to save. Must connect transparently to baseline ರಕ್ಷಣೆ root. | High. Render as ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ತರುವ / ರಕ್ಷಣಾಕರ, preserving the ರಕ್ಷಣೆ root so the connection to “salvation” (already Critical in baseline) is visible. |
| πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις | pasin anthrōpois | ”to all people/all mankind” | universal, unrestricted scope, no ethnic, social, or caste qualifier | ”to all men,” “to everyone,” “to all people” | Direct doctrinal parallel to Romans 3:23/10:12-13 “no distinction” universality already flagged Critical in baseline (universal_scope_of_gospel). Must not be qualified or softened. | High. Retain unqualified universality; do not narrow to “believers” or insert any social/caste qualifier. |
Titus 2:12
Greek: παιδεύουσα ἡμᾶς ἵνα ἀρνησάμενοι τὴν ἀσέβειαν καὶ τὰς κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίας σωφρόνως καὶ δικαίως καὶ εὐσεβῶς ζήσωμεν ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι. Gloss: “training us, so that renouncing ungodliness and worldly passions, we might live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παιδεύουσα | paideuousa | ”disciplining/training/educating” (present participle, agreeing with χάρις) | from παιδεύω: to bring up a child, instruct, discipline, correct — the same root as παιδεία (formative education) | “training,” “instructing,” “disciplining,” “teaching” | THE anchor term for the doctrine “Grace That Trains for Godly Living.” Grace itself — not human self-effort — is the trainer/teacher. This is the single most theologically load-bearing verb in the letter. | Critical. Grave risk of collapsing into a guru-disciple self-cultivation model (the Lingayat devotee’s disciplined shatsthala ascent, or a Haridasa devotee’s sadhana under a guru’s instruction), in which the trainee’s own effort produces spiritual advancement. Must be rendered so that grace (ಕೃಪೆ) is unambiguously the subject doing the training — recommend ತರಬೇತಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾ / ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾ (“training/instructing us”) with ಕೃಪೆ explicitly retained as grammatical subject, and a translator note clarifying grace trains from a position of gift already given (2:11), not effort yet to be rewarded. |
| ἀρνησάμενοι | arnēsamenoi | ”having renounced/denied” | to disown, refuse, reject | ”renouncing,” “denying,” “having rejected” | The response that grace’s training produces: a decisive break with the old life. | Medium. Standard renunciation verb; ensure not rendered with a term implying merit-earning renunciation (ascetic sannyasa-style withdrawal), since Titus’s ethic (unlike renunciate traditions) keeps believers fully embedded in household and civic life. |
| ἀσέβειαν | asebeian | ”ungodliness, impiety” | the negative counterpart to εὐσέβεια (godliness); irreverence toward God | ”ungodliness,” “impiety,” “godlessness” | Direct antonym of the letter’s keyword εὐσέβεια (godliness) — see note below. | Medium. Reuse whatever term is set for εὐσέβεια with a negating prefix/particle for consistency (e.g., ಅಭಕ್ತಿ / ದೇವಭಕ್ತಿಹೀನತೆ). |
| κοσμικὰς ἐπιθυμίας | kosmikas epithymias | ”worldly desires/passions” | desires oriented to the present age/world system, morally disordered cravings | ”worldly passions,” “worldly lusts,” “earthly desires” | Echoes the “present age” (νῦν αἰῶνι) contrast with the “blessed hope” in v.13. | Low-Medium. Standard; ಲೋಕದ ಆಶೆಗಳು / ಪ್ರಾಪಂಚಿಕ ಆಶೆಗಳು is adequate. |
| σωφρόνως | sōphronōs | ”self-controlledly, sensibly” | adverb from σώφρων: soundness of mind, self-mastery, moderation | ”self-controlled,” “sensibly,” “soberly” | Part of a triad (σωφρόνως, δικαίως, εὐσεβῶς) describing life oriented Godward, others-ward, and self-ward. σωφροσύνη is a recurring keyword across Titus 1-2 (elders, older men, young women, young men all called to this). | Medium. Recommend consistent Kannada term ಸ್ವಸ್ಥಚಿತ್ತ / ಆತ್ಮಸಂಯಮದಿಂದ across every occurrence of the σώφρων word-group (1:8; 2:2,4,5,6,12) for learner consistency. Distinguish from Lingayat/yogic “ಸಂಯಮ” self-discipline pursued for spiritual attainment — here self-control is the fruit of grace already received, not the means of earning standing. |
| δικαίως | dikaiōs | ”justly, uprightly” | conduct toward others that is fair/right | ”uprightly,” “justly,” “righteously” | Reuse the adverbial form of baseline’s ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ root: ನೀತಿಯಿಂದ. | Medium (adjective/adverb form of a Critical baseline noun; keep root visible). |
| εὐσεβῶς | eusebōs | ”godly, piously” | adverb from εὐσέβεια | ”godly,” “in a godly manner,” “piously” | See εὐσέβεια discussion at 1:1 below; this triad completes the description of the trained life. | High. See full discussion under Chapter 1 (εὐσέβεια). |
| ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι | en tō nyn aiōni | ”in the present age” | this current era, contrasted with the age to come | ”in this present age,” “in the present world” | Sets up the “already/not yet” tension resolved in v.13 (waiting for the blessed hope). | Low. ಈಗಿನ ಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ is adequate; avoid any term suggesting a cyclical yuga scheme (mainstream Hindu cosmological ages) — a linear “present age, then the age to come” structure must be clear from context. |
Titus 2:13
Greek: προσδεχόμενοι τὴν μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα καὶ ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξης τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. Gloss: “awaiting the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προσδεχόμενοι | prosdechomenoi | ”awaiting, expecting eagerly” | to receive/welcome in anticipation | ”waiting for,” “looking for,” “awaiting” | Posture of hope-filled expectation, not passive fatalism. | Low. ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತಾ is adequate; must not carry connotations of ಹಣೆಬರಹ-style fatalistic waiting (already flagged in baseline for providence). |
| μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα | makarian elpida | ”blessed hope” | ἐλπίς (hope): confident forward-looking expectation grounded in God’s promise, not wishful uncertainty | ”blessed hope” | New term for Titus glossary: ἐλπίς (hope) does not appear as a standalone baseline TM entry (only appears bound to “eternal life” contexts in Romans). Needs its own entry: ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ (nirīkṣe). | Medium. Distinguish biblical hope (certain, promise-grounded) from a generic wish; avoid ಆಸೆ (mere desire/wish). |
| ἐπιφάνειαν | epiphaneian | ”appearing, manifestation” | the noun form of ἐπιφαίνω (cf. v.11 ἐπεφάνη); in the LXX and Hellenistic usage, the visible in-breaking of a god or ruler | ”appearing,” “glorious appearing,” “manifestation” | Here referring to the Second Coming — the same word-family used for the first appearing (incarnation, v.11) and God’s kindness appearing (3:4). One consistent Kannada rendering across all three is essential for the doctrine “already appeared once in flesh, will appear again in glory.” | Critical. Same term-family risk as v.11. Recommend ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆ / ಪ್ರಕಟನೆ used consistently; must not suggest a repeatable avatar-style descent-and-return cycle. This is the Titus-specific extension of the baseline’s “incarnation” Critical-risk entry (ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ/ಅವತಾರ prohibition) into Second Coming language. |
| δόξης | doxēs | ”of glory” | reuse baseline ಮಹಿಮೆ | ”glory” | God’s radiant honor, to be visibly unveiled at Christ’s return. | High (baseline term, reused exactly). |
| τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ | tou megalou theou kai sōtēros hēmōn Iēsou Christou | ”of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” | Granville-Sharp construction (one article governing both “God” and “Savior,” both applied to the single referent “Jesus Christ”) | “our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” | One of the clearest single-verse assertions of the full deity of Christ in the NT — Jesus Christ is directly named “God” here, not merely “Son of God.” Direct extension of baseline’s Critical “deity_of_christ” doctrine. | Critical. The Kannada rendering must preserve the grammatical unity that identifies Jesus Christ himself as “great God and Savior” — not two figures (God, and separately, Savior Jesus). Recommend a construction that keeps ದೇವರು and ರಕ್ಷಕ both unambiguously in apposition to ಯೇಸು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ within a single clause, with a translator note flagging the Granville-Sharp force for theologian review, since Kannada syntax could easily allow an ambiguous reading that separates “God” from “our Savior Jesus Christ” into two referents. |
| σωτῆρος | sōtēros | ”Savior” | noun form of σῴζω/σωτηρία | ”Savior” | Christ himself as Savior — new glossary entry needed (baseline TM records ರಕ್ಷಣೆ for the abstract noun “salvation” but not a personal-agent noun “Savior”). Recommend ರಕ್ಷಕ (rakṣaka), built transparently on the same ರಕ್ಷಣೆ root. | Critical. Must never be rendered with a term suggesting a bestower of ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ; ರಕ್ಷಕ preserves the root link to the already-Critical ರಕ್ಷಣೆ. |
Titus 2:14
Greek: ὃς ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἵνα λυτρώσηται ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἀνομίας καὶ καθαρίσῃ ἑαυτῷ λαὸν περιούσιον ζηλωτὴν καλῶν ἔργων. Gloss: “who gave himself for us, to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν | edōken heauton hyper hēmōn | ”gave himself on behalf of/in place of us” | substitutionary self-giving | ”gave himself for us” | Christ’s voluntary, substitutionary self-sacrifice — foundational atonement language. | High. Standard substitutionary phrase; ensure ಉಪ್ (ὑπέρ) is rendered with a clearly substitutionary/beneficiary Kannada preposition (ನಮಗಾಗಿ), not a merely instrumental one. |
| λυτρώσηται | lytrōsētai | ”might redeem/ransom” | from λυτρόω: to release by payment of a price, buy back from bondage/slavery | ”redeem,” “ransom,” “set free” | Redemption from moral bondage (ἀνομία), not from a cosmic cycle of rebirth. New glossary entry: ವಿಮೋಚನೆ (vimōcane) or ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ (biḍugaḍe). | High. Must not be rendered with ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ (the very terms forbidden in baseline for “salvation,” since both literally mean “release/liberation” and are the most natural-sounding Kannada equivalents for “redemption” in a Hindu-formed ear). Recommend ವಿಮೋಚನೆ, explicitly distinguished by context (from ἀνομία/lawlessness, by Christ’s self-gift) from moksha’s release from samsara. |
| ἀνομίας | anomias | ”lawlessness, iniquity” | willful transgression of God’s moral law | ”lawlessness,” “iniquity,” “wickedness” | Parallel to baseline’s ಪಾಪ (sin) but specifically “lawless-ness” — transgression against νόμος. | Medium. Render ಅಧರ್ಮ (“without justice/order,” per baseline’s rejection of ಧರ್ಮ for “law,” this compound is acceptable here since it functions descriptively of lawless conduct, not as a rendering of νόμος itself) or simply ಅಕ್ರಮ/ಪಾಪಕರ ನಡತೆ. Flag for reviewer: do not let ಅಧರ್ಮ here be confused with rendering νόμος/law; the baseline’s ಧರ್ಮ prohibition applies to translating “law” (νόμος), not to this negated moral-lawlessness noun. |
| καθαρίσῃ | katharisē | ”might cleanse/purify” | from καθαρίζω | ”cleanse,” “purify” | Moral, not ritual, purification — parallel to baseline’s caution on ಪವಿತ್ರ/ಶುದ್ಧ distinction (relational holiness vs. ritual purity). | Medium. ಶುದ್ಧೀಕರಿಸು is standard but flag: must be read relationally/morally (union with a purifying God), not as ritual bathing purity — reinforced by the same caution given for ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ in baseline. |
| λαὸν περιούσιον | laon periousion | ”a people for [his] own possession” | LXX phrase (Exodus 19:5; Deuteronomy 14:2, 26:18) — a treasured, specially-owned people | ”a people for his own possession,” “a peculiar people,” “his very own people” | Deliberate echo of Israel’s covenant identity now applied to the church across Jew-Gentile lines — connects directly to baseline’s “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles” High-risk doctrine. | High. New entry: ಸ್ವಂತ ಜನರು or ಸ್ವಕೀಯ ಜನ (“his own/particular people”). Must not be rendered in a way that suggests an ethnic or caste-based “chosen people” exclusivity; the OT covenant-people language is now extended to all who believe, regardless of ethnicity or caste. |
| ζηλωτὴν καλῶν ἔργων | zēlōtēn kalōn ergōn | ”zealous for good works” | eager, enthusiastic pursuit | ”zealous of good works,” “eager to do good” | First occurrence of the letter’s recurring καλὰ ἔργα (“good works”) theme — the redeemed people’s defining characteristic, the fruit (not the root) of redemption. | High. See dedicated “good works” (καλὰ/ἀγαθὰ ἔργα) glossary entry below — central to the doctrine “Sound Doctrine and Good Works” and to the grace-vs-works contrast in 3:5, 8. |
Titus 2:15
Greek: Ταῦτα λάλει καὶ παρακάλει καὶ ἔλεγχε μετὰ πάσης ἐπιταγῆς· μηδείς σου περιφρονείτω. Gloss: “Speak these things, exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παρακάλει | parakalei | ”exhort/encourage” | reuse baseline ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸುವುದು (context-sensitive per baseline’s own note on this word-family) | “exhort,” “encourage,” “urge” | Titus’s teaching ministry combines proclamation, encouragement, and correction. | Low (baseline term, reused). |
| ἔλεγχε | elenche | ”rebuke, reprove, convict” | to expose error and correct | ”rebuke,” “reprove,” “correct,” “convict” | Same verb used of rebuking false teachers (1:13) and elders’ teaching function (1:9). New entry: ಗದರಿಸು / ಖಂಡಿಸು. | Medium. Should carry corrective-but-restorative force, distinct from a harsh or shaming public denunciation; context in 1:13 (“rebuke sharply,” ἀποτόμως) intensifies this same verb. |
| ἐπιταγῆς | epitagēs | ”authority, command, injunction” | delegated authoritative charge | ”authority,” “command” | Titus’s teaching authority is derivative — commissioned, not self-asserted (parallel to apostle/elder office risk already flagged in baseline). | Medium. ಅಧಿಕಾರ is adequate; avoid terms suggesting personally-attained spiritual authority (guru-status). |
Titus 3:1
Greek: Ὑπομίμνῃσκε αὐτοὺς ἀρχαῖς ἐξουσίαις ὑποτάσσεσθαι πειθαρχεῖν πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἑτοίμους εἶναι. Gloss: “Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀρχαῖς, ἐξουσίαις | archais, exousiais | ”rulers, authorities” | governing powers, civil magistrates | ”rulers and authorities,” “governments and authorities” | Parallel to Romans 13:1-7 (already flagged in baseline for native-speaker review, government/authority segments). New entries: ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು / ಆಡಳಿತಗಾರರು. | Medium. Consistent with baseline’s Romans 13 flag; civil, not religious, authority is in view. |
| ὑποτάσσεσθαι | hypotassesthai | ”to be subject to, submit to” | middle/passive of ὑποτάσσω: to arrange under, place in a subordinate but voluntary posture | ”be submissive,” “be subject,” “submit” | KEY TERM for the doctrine “Submission to Authority.” Recurs in 2:5 (wives to husbands) and 2:9 (bondservants to masters). New entry: ಅಧೀನರಾಗಿರುವುದು / ವಿಧೇಯರಾಗಿರುವುದು. | High. Must be grounded as a gospel-shaped, voluntary posture flowing from redemption (2:14) and not confused with either (a) caste-based involuntary subordination entrenched in Karnataka’s social structure, or (b) a merit-earning submission that itself produces standing before God (echoing baseline’s Lingayat kayaka-dasoha caution). Flag for theologian review wherever this verb governs a social-power relationship (rulers, husbands, masters). |
| πειθαρχεῖν | peitharchein | ”to obey, be obedient to authority” | compound of πείθω (persuade/obey) + ἀρχή (rule) | “to obey,” “be obedient” | Reinforces ὑποτάσσεσθαι with active compliance. New entry: ವಿಧೇಯತೆ ತೋರಿಸು. | Medium. Pair consistently with ὑποτάσσω rendering. |
| πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν | pros pan ergon agathon | ”for every good work” | see “good works” entry below | ”for every good work,” “for any good deed” | Submission to authority and readiness for good works are linked as the outward shape of the trained life described in 2:11-14. | High — see dedicated entry. |
Titus 3:2
Greek: μηδένα βλασφημεῖν ἀμάχους εἶναι ἐπιεικεῖς πᾶσαν ἐνδεικνυμένους πραΰτητα πρὸς πάντας ἀνθρώπους. Gloss: “to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every courtesy to all people.”
No new Critical/High terms beyond those already covered; standard ethical vocabulary (ἀμάχους “peaceable/not quarrelsome,” ἐπιεικεῖς “gentle/reasonable,” πραΰτητα “meekness”). Risk: Low. Recommend standard Kannada equivalents (ಜಗಳವಾಡದವರು, ಸೌಮ್ಯ, ನಮ್ರತೆ) with no doctrinal collision risk, though translators should note πραΰτης/ἐπιείκεια together form a recognizable Christian ethical ideal that should read as gospel-fruit, not innate temperament.
Titus 3:3
Greek: Ἦμεν γάρ ποτε καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀνόητοι ἀπειθεῖς πλανώμενοι δουλεύοντες ἐπιθυμίαις καὶ ἡδοναῖς ποικίλαις ἐν κακίᾳ καὶ φθόνῳ διάγοντες στυγητοί μισοῦντες ἀλλήλους. Gloss: “For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πλανώμενοι | planōmenoi | ”being led astray, deceived” | passive of πλανάω: to wander, be misled | ”led astray,” “deceived,” “going astray” | Sets up the contrast with 3:4-5 (God’s kindness appeared); the “before” state common to all humanity, matching Romans’ universal_human_accountability doctrine (already High-risk in baseline, itself flagged as a point of genuine partial resonance with Karnataka’s own caste-critical reform movements). | Medium. ದಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ is adequate. |
| δουλεύοντες ἐπιθυμίαις καὶ ἡδοναῖς | douleuontes epithymiais kai hēdonais | ”enslaved to desires and pleasures” | metaphorical slavery to passions | ”slaves to passions and pleasures” | Contrasts with 2:14’s redemption from bondage — the “before” picture of the same redemption. | Low-Medium. ಆಶೆಗಳಿಗೂ ಭೋಗಗಳಿಗೂ ದಾಸರಾಗಿ is adequate. |
This verse contains no new Critical terms; it functions rhetorically to prepare the ground for 3:4’s turn (“But when…”).
Titus 3:4
Greek: ὅτε δὲ ἡ χρηστότης καὶ ἡ φιλανθρωπία ἐπεφάνη τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ. Gloss: “But when the kindness and love for mankind of God our Savior appeared…”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χρηστότης | chrēstotēs | ”kindness, goodness” | God’s benevolent disposition in action | ”kindness,” “goodness” | Parallel term to χάρις in 2:11; both describe the same saving in-breaking. New entry: ದಯೆ / ಒಳ್ಳೆತನ. | Medium. ದಯೆ is standard and safe. |
| φιλανθρωπία | philanthrōpia | ”love for mankind” | God’s benevolent love directed at humanity as such (not one ethnic/social group) | “loving kindness,” “love for mankind,” “benevolence” | Reinforces universal scope alongside 2:11’s πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις. New entry: ಮಾನವಪ್ರೀತಿ / ಜನರ ಮೇಲಿನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ. | Medium. Avoid a generic humanist-philanthropy reading; this is God’s own redemptive love appearing in history, not a general ethical ideal. |
| ἐπεφάνη | epephanē | (same as 2:11) | — | — | Third occurrence of the ἐπιφαίνω word-family; confirms need for one consistent Kannada rendering (ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷವಾಯಿತು/ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಯಿತು) across 2:11, 2:13, 3:4. | Critical (as at 2:11/2:13). |
| τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ | tou sōtēros hēmōn theou | ”of God our Savior” | — | “God our Savior” | Same Granville-Sharp-adjacent construction naming God as Savior; parallels 2:13’s naming of Jesus Christ as “great God and Savior” — together these two verses form Titus’s tight Trinitarian-adjacent identification of God and Christ both as Savior. | Critical. Reuse ದೇವರು + ರಕ್ಷಕ; flag for theologian review alongside 2:13. |
Titus 3:5
Greek: οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ἃ ἐποιήσαμεν ἡμεῖς ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος ἔσωσεν ἡμᾶς διὰ λουτροῦ παλιγγενεσίας καὶ ἀνακαινώσεως πνεύματος ἁγίου. Gloss: “not by works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.”
This is the single most doctrinally dense verse in the letter — the anchor verse for both “Salvation by Grace not Works” and “Regeneration by the Holy Spirit.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων…ἃ ἐποιήσαμεν ἡμεῖς | ouk ex ergōn ha epoiēsamen hēmeis | ”not from works which we ourselves did” | explicit negation of human self-effort as the ground of salvation | ”not by works of righteousness that we had done,” “not because of righteous things we had done” | Direct parallel to Romans’ grace-vs-works doctrine (already High-risk in baseline, flagged especially for Romans 4:4-5 and 11:5-6 against both the karma-merit economy and Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic). This is Titus’s clearest single statement of that same doctrine and must be translated with matching force. | Critical. Direct escalation of baseline’s High-risk grace doctrine to the letter’s central verse; must trigger mandatory theologian review per baseline’s own escalation rule (“any segment where grace is being contrasted with works/merit/sacred labor”). |
| δικαιοσύνῃ | dikaiosynē | ”righteousness” (dative, “in righteousness”) | reuse baseline ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ | ”righteousness” | Here describing the (rejected) category of self-produced righteous deeds — reinforces that ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ itself, per baseline, must never be confused with attained/earned ethical status. | Critical (baseline term, reused exactly). |
| ἔλεος | eleos | ”mercy” | God’s compassionate response to human misery/need, distinct from χάρις’s emphasis on unmerited gift as such | ”mercy,” “compassion” | New entry: ಕರುಣೆ (karuṇe). Paired with χάρις (2:11) and ἔλεος here to form the letter’s two-fold description of God’s saving motive. | Medium. ಕರುಣೆ is standard; ensure it is not confused with ಕೃಪೆ (grace) — they are distinct, complementary terms both required in this passage. |
| ἔσωσεν | esōsen | ”he saved” | aorist of σῴζω; reuse baseline root ರಕ್ಷಣೆ/ರಕ್ಷಿಸು | ”saved,” “he saved” | Direct verb form of the Critical baseline noun ರಕ್ಷಣೆ. | Critical (baseline root, reused: ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದನು). |
| λουτροῦ | loutrou | ”washing, bath” | the act/instrument of washing — sacramental/baptismal imagery | ”washing,” “the washing” | Associated with baptism in much interpretive tradition, though the verse’s emphasis is theological (what God does) rather than ritual. New entry: ಸ್ನಾನ / ತೊಳೆಯುವಿಕೆ. | Medium. Should not be reduced to a merely ritual-purification reading (cf. baseline’s caution distinguishing ಪವಿತ್ರ from ಶುದ್ಧ); this washing accomplishes the internal reality named next (παλιγγενεσία), not external ritual cleanliness. |
| παλιγγενεσίας | palingenesias | ”of regeneration, new genesis/new birth” | compound of πάλιν (“again”) + γένεσις (“birth/origin/becoming”); literally “again-birth” or “new becoming" | "regeneration,” “new birth,” “rebirth” (KJV/many versions), “renewal” | THE anchor term for “Regeneration by the Holy Spirit.” Only two NT occurrences (Matthew 19:28, of cosmic renewal; Titus 3:5, of individual spiritual re-origination by the Spirit). Describes the Spirit’s decisive, one-time act of granting new spiritual life/origin to the believer — not a further turn of an ongoing cycle, but its beginning is a birth, singular and once-for-all, analogous to (but not identical with) John 3’s “born again” imagery. | CRITICAL — highest risk term in the entire book. The Greek root itself literally means “again-birth,” placing this word etymologically closer to the forbidden ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (punarjanma, cyclical rebirth/reincarnation) than almost any other term in the NT — more so even than ἀνάστασις (resurrection), for which the baseline already mandates ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ and absolutely forbids ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. A literal, unreflective rendering risk here is severe: an untrained translator or reader could naturally reach for ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ precisely because the Greek root matches so closely. This must be avoided with the same absolute force as the baseline’s resurrection prohibition. Recommended rendering: ನೂತನ ಜನ್ಮ (nūtana janma, “new birth”) or ಪವಿత్రాత్మనింద నూతనజననం, explicitly NOT ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. A mandatory translator note must accompany every occurrence: this is a single, Spirit-given, one-time spiritual origination into new life in Christ, received once, not a soul’s repeated cycling through successive bodies; the believer, once regenerated, does not undergo further “again-births.” Escalate to human theologian review on every occurrence, matching the baseline’s resurrection-doctrine protocol. |
| ἀνακαινώσεως | anakainōseōs | ”of renewal, renovation” | from ἀνακαινόω: to make new again, renovate | ”renewal,” “renewing” | Paired with παλιγγενεσία: the Spirit’s renewing, ongoing work alongside the once-for-all new birth — a parallel to the baseline’s ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ (“sanctification”) doctrine, though a distinct term. New entry: ನವೀಕರಣ. | High. Must be kept distinct from παλιγγενεσία (a one-time new-birth event) and from ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ (the baseline’s ongoing sanctification term); this is the Spirit’s renewing/refreshing work specifically tied to the new-birth event of this verse. |
| πνεύματος ἁγίου | pneumatos hagiou | ”of the Holy Spirit” | reuse baseline ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ | ”Holy Spirit” | The Holy Spirit is the agent of both the washing/regeneration and the renewal — must be unambiguous that a personal divine agent, not an impersonal force, accomplishes this. | Critical (baseline term, reused exactly). |
Titus 3:6
Greek: οὗ ἐξέχεεν ἐφ᾽ ἡμᾶς πλουσίως διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν. Gloss: “whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐξέχεεν | exechéen | ”poured out” | vivid, abundant outpouring imagery (cf. Acts 2:17, Joel 2:28 LXX) | “poured out,” “shed abundantly” | Emphasizes the Spirit’s lavish, gift-like giving — reinforcing grace’s unmerited abundance. | Low-Medium. ಸುರಿಸಿದನು (poured out) is adequate. |
| πλουσίως | plousiōs | ”richly, abundantly” | — | “richly,” “abundantly” | — | Low. |
| διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν | dia Iēsou Christou tou sōtēros hēmōn | ”through Jesus Christ our Savior” | — | “through Jesus Christ our Savior” | Reuses ರಕ್ಷಕ (established above at 2:13); the whole Godhead — Father (mercy, 3:5), Spirit (regeneration, 3:5), Son (mediating outpouring, 3:6) — is present in this single sweep, an implicitly Trinitarian structure. | Critical (consistent with 2:13 term reuse). |
Titus 3:7
Greek: ἵνα δικαιωθέντες τῇ ἐκείνου χάριτι κληρονόμοι γενηθῶμεν κατ᾽ ἐλπίδα ζωῆς αἰωνίου. Gloss: “so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δικαιωθέντες | dikaiōthentes | ”having been justified” | reuse baseline ನೀತಿವಂತರೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಣಯಿಸುವುದು | ”justified,” “declared righteous” | The forensic declaration is the basis of heirship — grace (justification) precedes and grounds inheritance. | Critical (baseline term, reused exactly). |
| τῇ ἐκείνου χάριτι | tē ekeinou chariti | ”by his grace” | reuse baseline ಕೃಪೆ | ”by his grace” | — | High (baseline term, reused exactly). |
| κληρονόμοι | klēronomoi | ”heirs” | one who receives an inheritance by right of relationship (here, adoption/new birth), not by achievement | ”heirs” | New entry: ವಾರಸುದಾರರು. Connects to baseline’s “adoption” doctrine (ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ) — the regenerated, justified believer is now a full heir. | High. Must convey full inheritance right through relationship (as per baseline’s adoption entry), not a partial or provisional share. |
| ἐλπίδα ζωῆς αἰωνίου | elpida zōēs aiōniou | ”hope of eternal life” | — | “hope of eternal life” | New entries: ἐλπίς = ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ (see 2:13); ζωὴ αἰώνιος = ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ. | Medium. ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ is the established Kannada Christian phrase; distinguish from ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ (already forbidden in baseline) as the goal in view — eternal life is ongoing personal existence and relationship with God, not liberation from personhood or from a rebirth cycle. |
Titus 3:8
Greek: Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος καὶ περὶ τούτων βούλομαί σε διαβεβαιοῦσθαι ἵνα φροντίζωσιν καλῶν ἔργων προΐστασθαι οἱ πεπιστευκότες θεῷ. ταῦτα ἐστὶν καλὰ καὶ ὠφέλιμα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις. Gloss: “The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are good and profitable for people.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος | pistos ho logos | ”faithful/trustworthy is the word” | a recurring formula in the Pastoral Epistles marking a core doctrinal summary as reliable | ”This is a trustworthy saying,” “faithful is the word” | Marks 2:11-3:7 (or at least 3:4-7) as a fixed, authoritative doctrinal summary — likely an early creedal/hymnic unit. New entry: ನಂಬತಕ್ಕ ಮಾತು / ವಿಶ್ವಾಸಾರ್ಹವಾದ ಮಾತು. | Medium. Should be rendered identically at each of its occurrences across the Pastoral Epistles (1 Timothy, Titus) for cross-document consistency, per baseline’s cross-document consistency principle. |
| καλῶν ἔργων προΐστασθαι | kalōn ergōn proistasthai | ”to devote themselves to / lead the way in good works” | προΐστημι: to stand before, lead, be devoted to, engage eagerly in | ”devote themselves to good works,” “engage in good deeds,” “be careful to maintain good works” | Climactic restatement of the letter’s good-works theme — now explicitly as the fruit that follows justification-by-grace (3:5-7), never its ground. This distinction (good works as fruit, never root) is the single most important interpretive key for the whole letter and must be reflected consistently. | Critical. See dedicated “good works” glossary entry below. This verse is the hinge where the letter’s negative use of ἔργα (3:5, “not by works”) and its positive use (3:8, 14, “devoted to good works”) must be sharply distinguished in translation and footnoted for reviewers — the same Greek word functions in two theologically opposite roles within four verses. |
| οἱ πεπιστευκότες θεῷ | hoi pepisteukotes theō | ”those who have believed God” | perfect participle: a settled, completed state of trust | ”those who have believed in God,” “believers” | Reuse baseline ನಂಬಿಕೆ root (ನಂಬಿದವರು). | High (baseline root, reused). |
| ὠφέλιμα | ōphelima | ”profitable, beneficial” | practical, this-worldly good, not merely abstract virtue | ”profitable,” “beneficial,” “useful” | Good works have real, tangible benefit for other people — an implicit apologetic/missional argument (cf. 3:1-2, 14). | Low. ಪ್ರಯೋಜನಕಾರಿ is adequate. |
PART B: Chapter-by-Chapter Analysis of the Whole Book
Chapter 1:1–4 (Salutation)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος θεοῦ | doulos theou | ”slave/servant of God” | Paul’s self-designation; total ownership and submission to God as master | ”servant of God,” “slave of God” | New entry: ದೇವರ ದಾಸ. Distinguish from ἀπόστολος (office) — this is a posture of total belonging. | Medium. ದಾಸ carries strong devotional resonance in the Haridasa tradition (dasa = devotee-servant of Krishna/Vishnu); flag that here it denotes total ownership by the one true God through a commissioned apostolic office, not a chosen bhakti relationship to one of several possible personal deities. |
| ἀπόστολος | apostolos | ”apostle” | reuse baseline ಅಪೊಸ್ತಲ | ”apostle” | — | Medium (baseline term, reused exactly). |
| κατὰ πίστιν ἐκλεκτῶν θεοῦ | kata pistin eklektōn theou | ”according to the faith of God’s elect” | ἐκλεκτός: chosen, selected | ”faith of God’s elect,” “faith of God’s chosen ones” | ἐκλεκτῶν relates directly to baseline’s “election” doctrine (ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ) — reuse. | High (baseline root, reused: ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯ ಜನರ ನಂಬಿಕೆ). |
| ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας | epignōsin alētheias | ”full/precise knowledge of the truth” | ἐπίγνωσις: thorough, personal knowledge (stronger than γνῶσις); ἀλήθεια: truth, reality as it actually is (vs. myth/falsehood) | “knowledge of the truth,” “full knowledge of the truth” | Sets up the letter’s repeated concern for “the truth” against Cretan myths and false teaching (1:14; 1 Tim parallels). New entries: ἀλήθεια = ಸತ್ಯ; ἐπίγνωσις = ಪೂರ್ಣ ಜ್ಞಾನ / ನಿಷ್ಠ ಜ್ಞಾನ. | High. Truth here is a specific, revealed, apostolic content (the gospel), not a general spiritual insight or gnosis attainable through disciplined meditation (contrast with Lingayat mystical realization traditions); flag accordingly. |
| κατ᾽ εὐσέβειαν | kat’ eusebeian | ”according to godliness” | εὐσέβεια: reverent, God-oriented piety expressed in conduct; the standard NT antonym is ἀσέβεια (ungodliness, cf. 2:12) | “godliness,” “piety” | KEY RECURRING TERM across Titus (1:1; 2:12 [adverb]; cf. also 1 Tim 2:2, 3:16, 4:7-8, 6:3-11 in the same Pastoral-Epistles register). Denotes a life of practical devotion oriented to God, flowing from and evidencing sound doctrine. | High. Established Kannada Bible tradition often renders εὐσέβεια with ಭಕ್ತಿ, the same root the baseline explicitly restricts elsewhere (rejected as an alternative for “faith,” πίστις, due to its strong association with Haridasa Krishna-bhakti and Lingayat Shiva-devotion). Since εὐσέβεια is a genuinely distinct Greek word from πίστις, reusing ಭಕ್ತಿ here is not a baseline contradiction — but given Titus’s dense collision context (Crete’s mixed religious environment, false teachers, “godliness” as a byword for gain in 1 Tim 6:5), recommend the disambiguated compound ದೇವಭಕ್ತಿ (“God-ward devotion/piety”) rather than bare ಭಕ್ತಿ, with a translator note that this godliness is the fruit of ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας (the specific apostolic gospel-truth) and grace’s training (2:11-12), not a generic devotional disposition transferable to any chosen deity. Escalate to theologian review on first occurrence; native-speaker review thereafter. |
| ἀψευδὴς θεός | apseudēs theos | ”the God who does not lie” | — | “God, who never lies” | Reinforces the reliability of God’s promise as foundation for hope. | Low. ಸುಳ್ಳಾಡದ ದೇವರು is adequate. |
| πρὸ χρόνων αἰωνίων | pro chronōn aiōniōn | ”before the ages of time” / “before time began” | eternity past, prior to creation | ”before the ages began,” “before time began” | Grounds the gospel promise in God’s eternal purpose, not a historical accident — parallel to Romans’ providence/election doctrine. | Medium. ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಂಚಿನಿಂದ / ಯುಗಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಮುಂಚೆ is adequate; avoid any suggestion of a cyclical eternity (successive world-ages), keeping this as a single eternal “before.” |
| ἐφανέρωσεν | ephanerōsen | ”manifested, made visible” | from φανερόω, a near-synonym of ἐπιφαίνω (2:11, 2:13, 3:4) | “manifested,” “revealed,” “made known” | Same conceptual risk-family as ἐπιφαίνω; recommend consistent rendering-family (ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸು/ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಯಿತು) across both verb groups so learners see the connection between “was manifested” (1:3, of the word/gospel) and “appeared” (2:11, 2:13, 3:4, of grace/God’s kindness/Christ). | High. |
| κήρυγμα | kēryma | ”proclamation, preaching” | the authoritative herald’s announcement | ”preaching,” “proclamation,” “message” | New entry: ಸಾರುವಿಕೆ / ಸಾರಿದ ಸಂದೇಶ. | Medium. Emphasize authoritative, commissioned proclamation, not a personal teaching or philosophy offered among options. |
Chapter 1:5–9 (Qualifications for Elders/Overseers)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πρεσβυτέρους | presbyterous | ”elders” | older, respected leaders with recognized office in a local congregation | ”elders” | KEY TERM for “Qualifications for Elders.” New entry: ಹಿರಿಯರು (hiriyaru, “elders”). | Medium-High. Must denote a recognized, appointed congregational office (cf. καταστήσῃς, “you should appoint,” 1:5), not merely social seniority by age, and must be clearly distinguished from Hindu religious-office analogues (ಗುರು, ಜಂಗಮ — already flagged in baseline for “apostle”) which imply self-attained spiritual status rather than a congregationally-recognized, character-qualified office. |
| ἐπίσκοπον | episkopon | ”overseer, bishop” | used interchangeably with πρεσβύτερος in this passage (1:5 “elders” / 1:7 “overseer” describe the same office) | “overseer,” “bishop” | New entry: ಮೇಲ್ವಿಚಾರಕ (mēlvicāraka, “overseer/superintendent”). | Medium. Must be recognized by the translation team as referring to the SAME office as πρεσβύτερος in this passage (a key exegetical point for elder-qualification teaching), not a separate, higher office. |
| ἀνέγκλητος | anenklētos | ”above reproach, blameless” | not open to accusation | ”above reproach,” “blameless” | Sets the overall standard for elder character. New entry: ನಿಂದಾರಹಿತ. | Low-Medium. |
| μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἀνήρ | mias gynaikos anēr | ”a one-woman man” / “husband of one wife” | marital fidelity/singularity qualification | ”husband of one wife,” “faithful to his wife” | New entry: ಏಕಪತ್ನಿಯುಳ್ಳ ಪುರುಷ. | Medium. A culturally and historically contested phrase across translation traditions generally; flag for native-speaker/theologian input on the range of accepted interpretive renderings, though this is a general cross-cultural translation question rather than one specific to Kannada religious collision risk. |
| μὴ αὐθάδη, μὴ ὀργίλον, μὴ πάροινον, μὴ πλήκτην, μὴ αἰσχροκερδῆ | — | “not self-willed / not quick-tempered / not a drunkard / not violent / not greedy for gain” | vice list disqualifying elder candidates | ”not arrogant, not quick-tempered, not a drunkard, not violent, not greedy for gain” | Standard vice list; new entries as needed (ಸ್ವೇಚ್ಛಾಪ್ರಿಯ, ಕೋಪಿಷ್ಠ, ಕುಡುಕ, ಹೊಡೆಬಡೆ ಮಾಡುವ, ಲೋಭಿ). | Low. No significant syncretism risk; standard moral vocabulary. |
| φιλόξενον, φιλάγαθον, σώφρονα, δίκαιον, ὅσιον, ἐγκρατῆ | — | “hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy/devout, disciplined” | virtue list required of elder candidates | ”hospitable, loving what is good, self-controlled, upright, holy, disciplined” | σώφρονα reuses the σωφροσύνη word-family (see 2:12 discussion, keep consistent); δίκαιον reuses the δικ- root (ನೀತಿ-family, keep consistent with baseline’s ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ); ὅσιον is close to but distinct from ἅγιος (baseline’s ಪವಿತ್ರ) — connotes devout reverence. New entries: φιλόξενον = ಅತಿಥಿಸತ್ಕಾರ ಮಾಡುವ; ἐγκρατῆ = ಆತ್ಮಸಂಯಮವುಳ್ಳ. | Medium. Keep σώφρων-family and δικ-family renderings consistent with their other Titus/Romans occurrences for learner continuity. |
| ἀντεχόμενον τοῦ κατὰ τὴν διδαχὴν πιστοῦ λόγου | antechomenon tou kata tēn didachēn pistou logou | ”holding firmly to the trustworthy word as taught” | doctrinal fidelity requirement for elders | ”holding firm to the trustworthy word as taught,” “holding fast to the faithful word” | Connects elder qualification directly to sound-doctrine competence (next clause). | High. Reinforces that elder qualification is doctrinal as well as moral — must not be softened to merely “being a good person.” |
| διδασκαλίᾳ τῇ ὑγιαινούσῃ…ἀντιλέγοντας ἐλέγχειν | didaskalia tē hygiainousē…antilegontas elenchein | ”sound teaching…to rebuke those who contradict” | ὑγιαίνω: to be healthy, sound (medical metaphor for doctrine) | “sound doctrine,” “healthy teaching” | KEY TERM for “Sound Doctrine and Good Works.” New entry: ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ / ಸತ್ಯ ಬೋಧನೆ (recurs 1:9, 1:13, 2:1, 2:2, 2:8). | High. Must consistently render ὑγιαίνω-family across all occurrences; connects to baseline’s “inspiration_of_scripture” caution (distinguishing apostolic sound teaching from Sharana vachana literature or Haridasa devotional compositions, both genuinely valued locally but categorically distinct in claimed authority). |
Chapter 1:10–16 (Rebuking False Teachers)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀνυπότακτοι | anypotaktoi | ”insubordinate, unruly” | negation of ὑποτάσσω (cf. 3:1); refusing right order/authority | ”insubordinate,” “rebellious,” “unruly” | Ironic contrast: false teachers refuse the very submission (to sound doctrine, to church order) that the letter elsewhere commends as gospel-shaped. | Medium. ಅಧೀನರಾಗದ / ಅಶಿಸ್ತಿನ is adequate; keep the ὑποτάσσω-root connection visible for teaching purposes. |
| ματαιολόγοι, φρεναπάται | mataiologoi, phrenapatai | ”empty talkers, deceivers of the mind” | rhetorical, doctrinally worthless talk; those who deceive minds | ”empty talkers,” “deceivers” | New entries: ವ್ಯರ್ಥ ಮಾತುಗಾರರು, ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮೋಸಗೊಳಿಸುವವರು. | Medium. |
| ἐκ τῆς περιτομῆς | ek tēs peritomēs | ”of the circumcision party” | Jewish-Christian legalist faction | ”those of the circumcision,” “the circumcision party” | Requires OT/Jewish-Christian background explanation for a Kannada audience with low OT narrative literacy (per baseline’s stated audience assumption); reuse baseline pattern for such background-dependent terms (cf. “seed_of_david”). | Medium. |
| Κρῆτες ἀεὶ ψεῦσται, κακὰ θηρία, γαστέρες ἀργαί | Krētes aei pseustai, kaka thēria, gasteres argai | ”Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons” | quotation of the Cretan poet Epimenides, used polemically by Paul | ”Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons” | A direct quotation from pagan Cretan literature deployed as a a rhetorical/ethnographic argument — translators should flag this as a quoted cultural proverb, not Paul’s own ethnic slur, to avoid the translation reading as gratuitously offensive. | Medium. Flag for native-speaker review: ensure the Kannada rendering signals this is a quotation (e.g., with quotation marks/attribution) so as not to read as the biblical author’s own blanket ethnic judgment. |
| Ἰουδαϊκοῖς μύθοις | Ioudaïkois mythois | ”Jewish myths/fables” | speculative, non-apostolic religious tradition | ”Jewish myths,” “Jewish fables” | Sets up sound-doctrine vs. myth contrast (parallel structurally to how the letter will later, in 3:9, reject “foolish controversies and genealogies”). New entry: ಯూదాయ ಕಟ್ಟುಕಥೆಗಳು. | Medium. |
| θεὸν ὁμολογοῦσιν εἰδέναι, τοῖς δὲ ἔργοις ἀρνοῦνται | theon homologousin eidenai, tois de ergois arnountai | ”they profess to know God, but deny him by their works” | orthodoxy without matching conduct | ”they profess to know God, but by their works they deny him” | Sharp warning that professed knowledge of God (ἐπίγνωσις, cf. 1:1) without corresponding ἔργα is a form of denial — reinforces the letter’s insistence that sound doctrine and good works are inseparable. | High. This clause functions as the negative mirror-image of 3:8’s positive good-works climax; keep the ἔργα-root rendering consistent across both so the contrast/parallel is visible to a Kannada reader. |
| πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἀδόκιμοι | pros pan ergon agathon adokimoi | ”disqualified/worthless for any good work” | ἀδόκιμος: failing the test, unqualified, counterfeit | ”unfit for any good work,” “disqualified for every good work” | Bookends the letter’s good-works theme: false teachers are “unfit” for good works (1:16) while the redeemed are to be “zealous”/“devoted to” them (2:14; 3:8). | High. Keep ἔργα-family rendering fully consistent; this is the negative pole of the letter’s central positive theme. |
Chapter 2:1–10 (Sound Doctrine for Household Groups)
This section precedes the core passage and sets up its household-code material; several terms here recur inside the core passage’s vocabulary (σώφρων-family, καλὰ ἔργα, ὑποτάσσω) and are cross-referenced above. New terms specific to this section:
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| νηφαλίους | nēphalious | ”sober, temperate” | literally “not intoxicated”; by extension, clear-headed and vigilant | ”sober-minded,” “temperate,” “clearheaded” | Required of older men (2:2), paralleling 1 Tim/Titus 1 overseer qualifications. New entry: ಸ್ವಸ್ಥಚಿತ್ತ / ಜಾಗರೂಕ. | Low-Medium. |
| ἱεροπρεπεῖς | hieroprepeis | ”reverent, befitting sacred things” | dignified, priest-like demeanor extended metaphorically to conduct | ”reverent,” “reverent in behavior,” “as is fitting for holy women” | Required of older women (2:3). New entry: ಪವಿತ್ರೋಚಿತ ನಡತೆಯುಳ್ಳ. | Medium. The root ἱερός (sacred/temple-related) could tempt a rendering that suggests ritual/temple-priestly status; clarify this describes moral-relational dignity of everyday conduct, not a cultic office, consistent with baseline’s caution distinguishing ಪವಿತ್ರ (relational holiness) from ಶುದ್ಧ (ritual purity). |
| καλοδιδασκάλους | kalodidaskalous | ”teachers of good/what is good” | older women instructing younger women in godly household conduct | ”teachers of what is good,” “teaching what is good” | New entry: ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸುವ. | Low. |
| σωφρονίζωσιν | sōphronizōsin | ”may train/encourage to be self-controlled” | causative form of σωφρονέω: to train another toward soundness of mind | ”train,” “encourage to be sensible,” “urge to be self-controlled” | Same σωφρ- root as 2:12’s σωφρόνως and 2:6’s σωφρονεῖν — the letter’s persistent self-mastery theme applied across every group addressed (elders, older men, older women training younger women, younger men, Titus himself). | Medium-High. Keep fully consistent σωφρ-root rendering across all seven-plus occurrences in the letter (1:8; 2:2,4,5,6,12) — this consistency is itself a teaching tool showing self-control as one unified, grace-produced virtue expected of the whole household, not a special ascetic discipline for the spiritually advanced. |
| φιλάνδρους, φιλοτέκνους | philandrous, philoteknous | ”loving [their] husbands, loving [their] children” | domestic virtue terms for younger women | ”loving their husbands, loving their children” | New entries: ಗಂಡನನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುವ, ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುವ. | Low. |
| οἰκουργούς | oikourgous | ”working at home, home-keeping” | domestic diligence | ”working at home,” “keepers at home,” “managing their households” | New entry: ಮನೆಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯುಳ್ಳ. | Low-Medium. Avoid rendering that suggests confinement/seclusion as a spiritual ideal in itself; the term describes diligent household stewardship. |
| ὑποτασσομένας τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν | hypotassomenas tois idiois andrasin | ”submitting to their own husbands” | see ὑποτάσσω discussion at 3:1 | ”submitting to their own husbands” | Same High-risk term as 3:1; reuse identical Kannada rendering. | High (cross-reference 3:1 entry). |
| ἵνα μὴ ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ βλασφημῆται | hina mē ho logos tou theou blasphēmētai | ”so that the word of God may not be blasphemed/reviled” | missional motive clause: household conduct affects gospel witness | ”so that the word of God may not be reviled/maligned” | New entry: βλασφημέω = ದೂಷಿಸು / ನಿಂದಿಸು. Connects household ethics to evangelism doctrine — conduct as apologetic. | Medium. |
| δούλους ἰδίοις δεσπόταις ὑποτάσσεσθαι | doulous idiois despotais hypotassesthai | ”bondservants [to be] subject to their own masters” | δεσπότης: master/owner, distinct from κύριος | ”bondservants submissive to their own masters” | New entry for δεσπότης: ಒಡೆಯ (owner/master), explicitly NOT ಕರ್ತ (which baseline reserves exclusively, Critical risk, for Christ’s exclusive Lordship). | High. Must maintain a clear lexical distinction between δεσπότης (ಒಡೆಯ, a human slave-owner) and κύριος (ಕರ್ತ, Christ’s exclusive divine Lordship) so that no confusion arises between human household authority and Christ’s unique sovereignty — flag explicitly for the same reason baseline flags ಕರ್ತ as Critical. |
| μὴ νοσφιζομένους | mē nosphizomenous | ”not pilfering/stealing” | keeping back for oneself what belongs to another (cf. Acts 5:2-3, same verb) | “not pilfering,” “not stealing” | New entry: ಕದಿಯದ. | Low. |
| κοσμῶσιν τὴν διδασκαλίαν | kosmōsin tēn didaskalian | ”may adorn the teaching/doctrine” | κοσμέω: to adorn, decorate, order beautifully (root of “cosmos”) | “adorn the doctrine,” “make the teaching attractive” | The chapter’s climactic phrase: household conduct visibly “adorns” (makes attractive/credible) the gospel doctrine before outside observers — reinforcing sound-doctrine-and-good-works unity. New entry: ಶೋಭಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡು / ಅಲಂಕರಿಸು. | Medium. A vivid image worth preserving; avoid a flat, merely functional translation that loses the “beautifying” sense. |
Chapter 3:9–11 (Avoiding Divisive Controversies)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μωρὰς ζητήσεις | mōras zētēseis | ”foolish/stupid controversies” | speculative, unprofitable doctrinal disputes | ”foolish controversies,” “stupid arguments” | New entry: ಮೂರ್ಖ ವಾದಗಳು. | Medium. |
| γενεαλογίας | genealogias | ”genealogies” | speculative ancestry-tracing disputes (cf. 1 Tim 1:4) | “genealogies” | New entry: ವಂಶಾವಳಿಗಳು. | Low-Medium. |
| ἔρεις | ereis | ”strife, quarrels” | new entry: ಜಗಳಗಳು. | ”strife,” “quarrels” | — | Low. |
| μάχας νομικάς | machas nomikas | ”fights/quarrels about the law” | νόμος-related disputes; reuse baseline’s caution on νόμος = ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ, NEVER ಧರ್ಮ | ”quarrels about the law,” “legal disputes” | New entry: ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಜಗಳ. | Medium. Reuse baseline’s law-term prohibition (never ಧರ್ಮ) here as well, since this phrase directly concerns disputes over νόμος. |
| αἱρετικὸν ἄνθρωπον | hairetikon anthrōpon | ”a divisive/factious person” (root of English “heretic”) | in this early usage, primarily “one who causes/chooses division” (from αἵρεσις, “a choosing/faction”), not yet the later technical sense of formal doctrinal heresy | ”a person who causes division,” “a divisive person,” “a factious man” (older versions: “a heretic”) | KEY TERM for “Avoiding Divisive Controversies.” New entry: ಭೇದ ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ / ವಿಭಜಕ. | High. Do NOT render with a Kannada word built on ಪಂಥ (“sect/religious faction”), since Karnataka’s religious landscape is itself organized around numerous historically significant panthas (the Lingayat/Veerashaiva pantha and its sub-divisions, various Vaishnava/Haridasa sampradayas); a ಪಂಥ-rooted rendering would risk making this verse read as a warning against sectarian rivalry between established religious communities rather than Paul’s narrower pastoral concern for a person stirring division within a single congregation over speculative disputes. Recommend ಭೇದ ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ (“a person who creates division”) instead, with translator note. |
| μετὰ μίαν καὶ δευτέραν νουθεσίαν παραιτοῦ | meta mian kai deuteran nouthesian paraitou | ”after one and a second warning, reject/have nothing more to do with” | graduated church-discipline procedure | ”after a first and second warning, have nothing more to do with him” | New entries: νουθεσία = ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ; παραιτέομαι = ತ್ಯಜಿಸು/ದೂರವಿಡು. | Medium. |
| ἐξέστραπται…αὐτοκατάκριτος | exestraptai…autokatakritos | ”has been turned/perverted…self-condemned” | ἐξέστραπται: warped, twisted from true course; αὐτοκατάκριτος: condemning himself by his own persistent choice | ”warped and sinning, being self-condemned” | New entries: ವಕ್ರಗೊಂಡ / ಸ್ವಯಂ-ಖಂಡಿತ. | Low-Medium. |
Chapter 3:12–15 (Final Greetings and Instructions)
This section introduces no new Critical or High-risk theological terms. It reuses the letter’s established good-works vocabulary once more:
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| καλῶν ἔργων προΐστασθαι εἰς τὰς ἀναγκαίας χρείας | kalōn ergōn proistasthai eis tas anankaias chreias | ”to devote themselves to good works to meet urgent/pressing needs” | practical, tangible good works (here: material provision for traveling ministers) | “devote themselves to good works, helping cases of urgent need” | Final restatement of the letter’s good-works theme (see 2:14; 3:1; 3:8), now given a very concrete, material application. Reuse the established καλὰ ἔργα rendering. | High (reuse of established term; no new risk). |
| ἵνα μὴ ὦσιν ἄκαρποι | hina mē ōsin akarpoi | ”so that they may not be unfruitful” | ἄκαρπος: fruitless, unproductive | ”so that they may not be unfruitful” | Fruitfulness as the expected outcome of the trained, regenerated life described across the whole letter — a fitting closing echo of 2:11-3:8’s core teaching. | Low-Medium. ಫಲಹೀನ (fruitless) is adequate; the metaphor (fruit-bearing) translates naturally into Kannada without collision risk. |
Proper names in this section (Ἀρτεμᾶν/Artemas, Τυχικόν/Tychicus, Ζηνᾶν/Zenas, Ἀπολλῶν/Apollos) follow standard established Kannada Bible transliteration conventions; no doctrinal risk.
Chapter 3:12-15 summary: no new theological doctrine introduced; reuses the good-works (καλὰ ἔργα) vocabulary established in 2:14, 3:1, and 3:8.
