Cross-Reference Analysis
Hebrews — Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis
0. Citation Normalization Conventions
All internal citations in this document and in Phase 2 segment metadata use the normalized English form Book Chapter:Verse (ranges as Chapter:Verse-Verse). The destination-text citation must use the established Kannada Bible book name. The Romans baseline fixed several of these names; this document extends the table with every book newly cited by Hebrews.

Translation sensitivity note on Deuteronomy’s Kannada book name: the established Kannada Bible book title ಧರ್ಮೋಪದೇಶಕಾಂಡ (“teaching-of-dharma book,” from ಧರ್ಮ + ಉಪದೇಶ + ಕಾಂಡ) retains the syllable ಧರ್ಮ as a fixed, traditional proper-noun title. This does not conflict with the baseline’s Critical-tier prohibition on ಧರ್ಮ as the doctrinal rendering of νόμος (“law”) or δικαιοσύνη (“righteousness”) in running text. Book titles are frozen proper nouns inherited from prior Kannada Bible translation tradition; the prohibition governs live doctrinal vocabulary choices, not historic book-naming conventions. No action is required beyond noting the distinction for reviewers who may otherwise flag this book name in error.
Verse numbers remain Arabic numerals per the baseline convention (not Kannada numerals), consistent across both curricula.
1. Core Passage Cross-Reference Matrix: Hebrews 9:11-28
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 9:11 | Christ as Great High Priest; heavenly, not earthly, sanctuary | Christ; (contrast: Aaronic high priests) | Typology of Exodus 25:8-9 (Tabernacle pattern); Exodus 25:40 (quoted directly at Hebrews 8:5) | ಮಹಾಯಾಜಕ/ಗುಡಾರ must never shift toward Hindu temple vocabulary (ಪುರೋಹಿತ, ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ); the “greater tent” is a real heavenly place, not an allegorical inner state |
| Hebrews 9:12 | Once-for-all redemption by Christ’s own blood | Christ | Typology of Leviticus 16 (Day of Atonement: high priest enters Most Holy Place yearly with animal blood) | ಒಂದೇ ಸಲ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೂ must match every other ἐφάπαξ/ἅπαξ occurrence (Hebrews 7:27; 9:26-28; 10:2, 10); ವಿಮೋಚನೆ never ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ |
| Hebrews 9:13-14 | Lesser (ceremonial) vs. greater (moral/conscience) cleansing | (Levitical priests, implicit); Christ | Allusion to Numbers 19:1-10, 17-19 (ashes of the red heifer); contrast structure parallels Romans 2:28-29 (circumcision of heart vs. flesh) | Requires two distinct Kannada verbs within one passage (ಶುದ್ಧಗೊಳಿಸು for v.13’s outward rite; ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ-family vocabulary for v.14’s inward cleansing) — collapsing the two destroys the lesser-to-greater argument |
| Hebrews 9:15 | Christ the mediator of the new covenant; redemption from transgressions under the first covenant | Christ | Directly prepares for the Jeremiah 31:31-34 quotation at Hebrews 8:8-12 (same new-covenant theme); structurally parallel to Romans 3:25’s “redemption… in Christ Jesus” | ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ must be visibly distinguished from [BASELINE ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ “intercession”]; guard against guru/ಜಂಗಮ intermediary-figure assimilation |
| Hebrews 9:16-17 | Covenant/testament wordplay (διαθήκη as both “covenant” and “will”) | — | No direct OT quotation; a Hellenistic legal analogy explaining v.15 | Translation-mechanics flag, not doctrinal: Kannada has no single word spanning both senses; requires a standing translator note, not a new doctrinal risk entry |
| Hebrews 9:18-20 | The first covenant itself required blood; direct quotation of the Sinai covenant’s inaugurating words | Moses | Direct quotation: Exodus 24:8 (“This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you”) | ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆಯ ರಕ್ತ (“the blood of the covenant”) must be rendered identically at every recurrence: Hebrews 9:20; 10:29; 13:20 — this exact phrase is the verbal thread linking old and new covenant inauguration |
| Hebrews 9:21 | Sprinkling of the tent and its vessels | Moses | Allusion to Exodus 24:6-8; Leviticus 8:19, 24 (consecration of the tabernacle) | ಆರಾಧನಾ ಸೇವೆ preferred; avoid ಪೂಜಾ-family vocabulary |
| Hebrews 9:22 | No forgiveness without blood-shedding | — | Summary principle drawn from the whole Levitical sacrificial corpus (esp. Leviticus 17:11) | ಕ್ಷಮೆ must be anchored to a real, historical, substitutionary death, not devotional overlooking of sin |
| Hebrews 9:23-24 | Earthly sanctuary a copy of the heavenly; Christ entered heaven itself | Christ | Typological development of Exodus 25:40 (quoted Hebrews 8:5); structurally parallels Colossians 1:15-20 (outside this curriculum) as “image of the invisible” language | ಪ್ರತಿರೂಪಗಳು — must avoid Advaita māyā-style illusion framing; both copy and original are real |
| Hebrews 9:25-26 | Christ’s sacrifice contrasted with the high priest’s yearly repeated entry | Christ; (contrast: yearly high priest) | Direct contrast with Leviticus 16:29-34 (annual Day of Atonement observance) | ಒಂದೇ ಸಲ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೂ consistency, as above; ಯುಗಗಳ ಪರಿಸಮಾಪ್ತಿ (“end of the ages”) must convey a linear historical hinge-point, not a turn of a repeating cosmic yuga cycle |
| Hebrews 9:27-28 | Appointed death and judgment; Christ’s once-for-all bearing of sin; his future second appearing | Christ | Allusion: Isaiah 53:12 (“he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors”) | ಅನೇಕರ ಪಾಪಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತುಕೊಂಡು must preserve vicarious, substitutionary bearing (Isaiah 53:12 is the direct conceptual source); ಎರಡನೆಯ ಸಲ must denote a single, still-future, bodily return — not a further avatar-cycle |
2. Chapter-by-Chapter Cross-Reference Matrix (Hebrews 1-13)
Chapter 1
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 1:1-2 | Progressive revelation culminating in the Son | Prophets; the Son | Thematic summary of the entire OT prophetic corpus; structurally parallels Romans 1:1-2 (“the gospel… promised beforehand through his prophets”) | Both books open by grounding the gospel in prior prophetic promise — render ಪ್ರವಾದಿ/ಪ್ರವಾದನೆ consistently with the Romans baseline |
| Hebrews 1:3 | The Son as the exact radiance and imprint of God’s being | Christ | Echoes Wisdom-of-God language (cf. Proverbs 8; Wisdom of Solomon, non-canonical but background) and Colossians 1:15 (outside curriculum) | ಮಹಿಮೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ / ಆತನ ಸ್ವರೂಪದ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಪ್ರತಿರೂಪ — Critical; must not be assimilated to bhakti/Aikya divine-light or gradual-illumination imagery |
| Hebrews 1:5 | Divine Sonship declared | Christ | Direct quotations: Psalm 2:7 and 2 Samuel 7:14 | Ps 2:7 (“You are my Son, today I have begotten you”) is also the OT text underlying Romans 1:4’s “declared to be the Son of God… by his resurrection.” Rendering-consistency rule: the Kannada phrase for “Son” (ದೇವರ ಮಗ) and for “begotten/declared” must align across both curricula so a reader recognizes the same messianic-sonship argument in Romans and Hebrews |
| Hebrews 1:6 | Angels commanded to worship the Son | Christ; angels | Direct quotation: Deuteronomy 32:43 (LXX)/Psalm 97:7 | Deuteronomy 32:43 is the Song of Moses — the same chapter Paul quotes in Romans 15:10 (“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people”), though a different clause. Flag for consistency awareness: both books draw authority from the Song of Moses; no single phrase overlaps verbatim, but translators should be aware Deuteronomy 32 is a shared source text across both curricula |
| Hebrews 1:7 | Angels as servants, not co-equals with the Son | Angels | Direct quotation: Psalm 104:4 | ದೇವದೂತ — must not be assimilated to devas as objects of devotion |
| Hebrews 1:8-9 | The Son directly addressed as “God,” enthroned forever | Christ | Direct quotation: Psalm 45:6-7 | One of the NT’s clearest direct OT ascriptions of the divine name to the Son; render with full doctrinal weight — no softening. Directly reinforces [BASELINE ದೇವರ ಮಗ, ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇವತ್ವ “Deity of Christ,” Critical] |
| Hebrews 1:10-12 | The Son as Creator, unchanging amid a changing creation | Christ | Direct quotation: Psalm 102:25-27 | ನಿತ್ಯ (“eternal,” here of Christ’s unchanging being) — anchor to the personal Creator, not an impersonal Vedantic changeless principle |
| Hebrews 1:13 | The Son enthroned at God’s right hand, enemies subdued | Christ | Direct quotation: Psalm 110:1 | Psalm 110:1 is also alluded to in Romans 8:34 (“Christ Jesus… who is at the right hand of God”) — an allusion, not a direct quotation, in Romans. Rendering-consistency rule: “at the right hand of God” (ದೇವರ ಬಲಗಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ) should be phrased identically in both curricula’s treatment of this shared image |
| Hebrews 1:14 | Angels as ministering spirits sent to serve believers | Angels | Summary statement, no direct quotation | ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಆತ್ಮಗಳು — angels as commissioned servants, never intercessory objects of prayer |
Chapter 2
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 2:6-8 | Humanity’s God-given dignity, fulfilled surpassingly in Christ | Christ; humanity generally | Direct quotation: Psalm 8:4-6 | ಮಹಿಮೆ/ಗೌರವ (“glory/honor”) — Christ’s temporary humbling “below the angels” must be read as purposeful incarnational descent, not diminished ontological status |
| Hebrews 2:9-10 | Christ’s suffering death “for everyone”; the pioneer of salvation perfected through suffering | Christ | Thematic parallel to Romans 5:6-8 (Christ died for the ungodly) | ಅರ್ಪಿಸು/ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ನಾಯಕ — the universality (“for everyone,” ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಾಗಿ) echoes Romans 3:23’s “all have sinned/all may be justified” universality; do not soften either |
| Hebrews 2:11-13 | Christ not ashamed to call believers “brothers” | Christ; believers | Direct quotations: Psalm 22:22 and Isaiah 8:17-18 | ಸಹೋದರರು — reinforces [BASELINE ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ “adoption,” Romans 8:15,29] shared-family theme across curricula |
| Hebrews 2:14-15 | Christ’s death destroys the power of death and the devil, freeing captives | Christ; the devil | Typological echo of Exodus deliverance from slavery (Exodus 1-14) | ದಾಸತ್ವ (“bondage”) here is wholly negative — must not be confused with the positive Haridasa-bhakti ದಾಸ (“devoted servant”) identity |
| Hebrews 2:17 | Christ makes propitiation for the sins of the people | Christ | Typology of Leviticus 16 (Day of Atonement); direct doctrinal parallel to Romans 3:25 (“God put forward [Christ] as a propitiation”) | ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ ಬಲಿ — Critical; the SAME Greek concept (ἱλασμός/ἱλαστήριον) underlies both Hebrews 2:17/9:5 and Romans 3:25 (outside the baseline’s explicit term list but doctrinally identical: propitiation). Rendering-consistency rule: if Romans 3:25 is retranslated or referenced in any cross-curriculum material, the same ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ ಬಲಿ + mandatory translator note convention established here for Hebrews must be applied there too, to avoid two different Kannada renderings of the same atonement doctrine across the two curricula |
| Hebrews 2:18 | Christ’s testing qualifies him to help the tested | Christ | Anticipates Hebrews 4:15 | ಶೋಧನೆಗೆ ಗುರಿಯಾಗು — real human testing, supports Humanity of Christ doctrine |
Chapter 3
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 3:1-6 | Christ superior to Moses, as builder/son superior to the house/servant | Christ; Moses | Allusion: Numbers 12:7 (“my servant Moses… he is faithful in all my house”) | ಮೋಶೆ (established transliteration); the superiority argument must not be read as devaluing Moses’ genuine faithfulness, only as establishing Christ’s greater, filial (not merely servile) status in God’s house |
| Hebrews 3:2-5 | Moses as faithful servant in God’s house | Moses | Numbers 12:7 (as above); background Exodus 2-40 (Moses’ entire ministry) | ಸೇವಕ (“servant”) — requires brief OT-background footnote for readers with low OT narrative literacy, consistent with the baseline’s approach to David |
| Hebrews 3:7-11 | Warning against hardening the heart, drawn from the wilderness rebellion | The wilderness generation | Direct quotation: Psalm 95:7-11 (itself referencing Exodus 17:1-7 and Numbers 14, the rebellion at Meribah/Kadesh) | ಹೃದಯವನ್ನು ಕಠಿಣಗೊಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು — Critical-tier apostasy-warning vocabulary; requires theologian review at every occurrence (3:8, 13, 15; 4:7) |
| Hebrews 3:12-15 | Repeated exhortation: “Today,” lest sin’s deceitfulness harden any believer | — | Continues Psalm 95 quotation | ಇಂದು (“today”) — render consistently to preserve the urgency-marker rhetorical structure |
| Hebrews 3:16-19 | The wilderness generation’s unbelief barred them from the promised rest | The wilderness generation; Moses (implicit) | Background: Numbers 14:1-35 | ಅವಿಶ್ವಾಸ — direct antonym-formation on [BASELINE ನಂಬಿಕೆ]; prepares Chapter 4’s rest doctrine |
Chapter 4
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 4:1-2 | The promise of rest still stands; the gospel must be received by faith | — | Continues Psalm 95 argument | ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ/ನಂಬಿಕೆ — faith as the sole means of entering rest, not works |
| Hebrews 4:3-5 | God’s own rest after creation, the pattern behind “rest” | God | Direct quotations: Genesis 2:2 and Psalm 95:11 | ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ — High; standing translator note required distinguishing this relational rest from moksha/mukti and from Lingayat Aikya-dissolution |
| Hebrews 4:6-7 | Rest remains open “today” | — | Direct quotation: Psalm 95:7-8 (repeated from ch.3) | ಇಂದು — same consistency rule as 3:7-15 |
| Hebrews 4:8-10 | Joshua did not give ultimate rest; a greater rest remains, entered by ceasing from one’s own works | Joshua | Background: Joshua 21:43-45; 22:4 (Joshua “gave rest,” but provisional) | ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ — “ceasing from works” (4:10) directly parallels the grace-versus-works guardrail already Critical in the Romans baseline (Romans 4:4-5; 11:5-6) |
| Hebrews 4:11-13 | Exhortation to strive to enter that rest; the living, discerning word of God | — | No direct quotation | ಜೀವಸ್ವರೂಪ ದೇವರ ವಚನ — God’s personal self-disclosure, not a ritual mantra whose power lies in correct recitation |
| Hebrews 4:14-16 | Jesus the great high priest who sympathizes; bold approach to the throne of grace | Christ | Prepares Chapter 5’s high priest Christology | ಕೃಪಾಸನ/ಧೈರ್ಯ — access granted by grace, not devotional merit or ritual correctness; parallels Romans 5:2 (“access… into this grace”) |
Chapter 5
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 5:1-4 | Qualifications of a Levitical high priest: compassion, weakness, divine appointment | Aaronic high priests | Background: Exodus 28-29; Leviticus 8-9 (Aaron’s ordination) | ಮಹಾಯಾಜಕ — establishes the OT pattern Christ both shares (true humanity) and surpasses |
| Hebrews 5:5-6 | Christ’s priesthood divinely appointed, “after the order of Melchizedek” | Christ; Melchizedek | Direct quotations: Psalm 2:7 (repeated from 1:5) and Psalm 110:4 | ಮೆಲ್ಕಿಜೆದೇಕ — Psalm 110:4 (“You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek”) is the single OT verse most load-bearing for the entire Christ-as-priest argument (recurs 5:10; 6:20; 7:11, 17, 21) — render this quotation identically at every recurrence |
| Hebrews 5:7-8 | Christ’s prayers, tears, and obedience learned through suffering | Christ | Echoes Gethsemane tradition (Matthew 26:36-46; Luke 22:39-44 — outside this curriculum but doctrinally continuous) | Supports Humanity of Christ doctrine; real suffering, not illusory appearance |
| Hebrews 5:9-10 | Christ “made perfect,” source of eternal salvation, high priest after Melchizedek’s order | Christ; Melchizedek | Psalm 110:4 again | ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸು — completed status through obedient suffering, not progressive self-attainment |
| Hebrews 5:11-14 | Rebuke for spiritual immaturity; milk versus solid food | — | Wisdom-tradition maturity metaphor (cf. Proverbs generally; also 1 Corinthians 3:1-2, outside curriculum) | ಹಾಲು/ಗಟ್ಟಿ ಆಹಾರ — standard metaphor, low collision risk |
Chapter 6
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 6:1-3 | Call to move beyond elementary teaching toward maturity | — | No direct quotation | ಮಾನಸಾಂತರ (“repentance,” 6:1) — supporting term for the apostasy warning that follows |
| Hebrews 6:4-8 | The severe warning against falling away after full enlightenment | — | No direct OT quotation; agricultural metaphor (thorns and briers, cf. Genesis 3:17-18 background) | ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಬಿದ್ದುಹೋಗುವುದು — Critical; flag every occurrence for theologian review, per doctrine_risk_registry conventions already fixed for apostasy-adjacent Romans passages (cf. Romans 11:22’s “otherwise you too will be cut off,” a structurally similar warning) |
| Hebrews 6:9-12 | Confidence of better things; call to diligence and hope | — | No direct quotation | ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ — grounded in God’s character, not fatalism |
| Hebrews 6:13-15 | God’s oath to Abraham | Abraham | Direct allusion/quotation: Genesis 22:16-17 (“By myself I have sworn… surely I will bless you”) | ಅಬ್ರಹಾಮ (established baseline transliteration); Abraham’s faith-tested obedience here anticipates the fuller Abraham treatment at Hebrews 11:8-19, and stands in direct doctrinal continuity with Romans 4:1-25’s extended Abraham-by-faith argument. Rendering-consistency rule: Abraham’s name and the vocabulary of “promise” (ವಾಗ್ದಾನ) and “oath” (ಪ್ರಮಾಣ) should match usage in any Romans 4 material for this shared patriarch |
| Hebrews 6:16-18 | Two unchangeable things: God’s promise and God’s oath | God; Abraham | Continues Genesis 22 background | ಅಚಲ/ಪ್ರಮಾಣ — God’s own self-guarantee, not impersonal fate (never ಹಣೆಬರಹ) |
| Hebrews 6:19-20 | Hope as an anchor; Jesus our forerunner, high priest after Melchizedek’s order | Christ; Melchizedek | Psalm 110:4 (again) | ಪೂರ್ವಗಾಮಿ/ಮೆಲ್ಕಿಜೆದೇಕ — prepares full Melchizedek exposition in ch.7 |
Chapter 7
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 7:1-3 | Melchizedek’s mysterious, kingly, priestly, genealogy-less appearance | Melchizedek; Abraham | Direct narrative reference: Genesis 14:17-20 | ಮೆಲ್ಕಿಜೆದೇಕ — requires OT-background footnote; guard against assimilation to a self-realized guru/Sharana figure whose authority is self-attained rather than divinely designated |
| Hebrews 7:4-10 | Melchizedek’s superiority even to Abraham and Levi (tithes, blessing) | Melchizedek; Abraham; Levi | Genesis 14:18-20 (continued) | ಬಾಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ/ದಶಾಂಶ (“tithe”) — supporting vocabulary, low risk |
| Hebrews 7:11-19 | A change of priesthood necessitates a change of law/covenant; Christ’s priesthood introduces “a better hope” | Christ; Levitical priests | Direct quotation: Psalm 110:4 (repeated) | ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ (“better”) — same consistent comparative used throughout the book’s cumulative superiority argument |
| Hebrews 7:20-22 | Christ’s priesthood confirmed by God’s oath, making him “the guarantor of a better covenant” | Christ | Psalm 110:4 (again) | ಖಾತ್ರಿದಾರ/ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ — legal-personal guarantee language distinct from, but reinforcing, μεσίτης “mediator” |
| Hebrews 7:23-25 | Christ’s permanent, unending priesthood; his ongoing intercession | Christ | Contrast with the many successive, mortal Levitical priests | ಶಾಶ್ವತ/ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ — reuses [BASELINE ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ “intercession”] for Christ’s ongoing heavenly activity |
| Hebrews 7:26-28 | Christ’s sinlessness and once-for-all self-offering, superior to daily Levitical sacrifices | Christ; Levitical priests | Contrast with Leviticus 9:7 (Aaron’s daily sacrificial duty) | ಒಂದೇ ಸಲ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೂ (ἐφάπαξ, 7:27) — same Critical-tier consistency rule as 9:12, 25-28; 10:2, 10 |
Chapter 8
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 8:1-2 | Christ seated at God’s right hand, minister of the true heavenly sanctuary | Christ | Psalm 110:1 (again, cf. 1:13) | ಸೇವಕ/ಪವಿತ್ರ ಸ್ಥಳ — reinforces enthronement + priestly-service themes together |
| Hebrews 8:3-5 | Earthly sanctuary a copy/shadow of the heavenly pattern shown to Moses | Moses | Direct quotation: Exodus 25:40 (“See that you make everything according to the pattern”) | ಪ್ರತಿರೂಪ/ಛಾಯೆ — real, historically instituted pointer; not Vedantic māyā |
| Hebrews 8:6-7 | Christ mediates a better covenant, established on better promises | Christ | Prepares the Jeremiah quotation | ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ/ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ — consistent comparative and mediator vocabulary |
| Hebrews 8:8-12 | Extended quotation of the new covenant promise | God; “the house of Israel and the house of Judah” | Direct quotation: Jeremiah 31:31-34 (the single longest OT quotation in the NT) | Critical. Cross-curriculum rendering-consistency rule: Jeremiah 31’s new-covenant language stands in direct doctrinal continuity with Romans 11:26-27’s quotation of Isaiah 59:21/27:9 (“this will be my covenant with them, when I take away their sins”) — both passages describe the SAME eschatological covenant reality. ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ, ಪಾಪ, and ಕ್ಷಮೆ vocabulary must be used identically wherever these two passages are treated together in cross-curriculum teaching material, so a learner recognizes Hebrews 8 and Romans 11 as describing one promise |
| Hebrews 8:13 | The first covenant declared obsolete | — | Concluding comment on the Jeremiah quotation | ಹಳೆಯದಾಗಿಸು — genuine supersession, not neutral aging |
Chapter 9
(Verses 11-28 fully treated in Section 1 above. Framing verses 1-10 below.)
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 9:1-5 | Description of the Tabernacle’s furnishings: lampstand, table, veil, ark, mercy seat, cherubim | Moses (implicit) | Background: Exodus 25-26; 30 (Tabernacle construction) | ಕರುಣಾಸನ (“mercy seat”) — Critical; requires the same mandatory propitiation translator note as 2:17 |
| Hebrews 9:6-7 | The high priest’s annual entry into the Most Holy Place with blood | Aaronic high priests | Background: Leviticus 16:1-19 (Day of Atonement ritual) | ಮಹಾಯಾಜಕ/ರಕ್ತ — establishes the repeated, annual pattern that vv.11-28 contrast with Christ’s single act |
| Hebrews 9:8-10 | The Holy Spirit signifies that the way was not yet fully opened; the old system dealt only with outward regulations | Holy Spirit | Theological commentary, no direct quotation | ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ [BASELINE]; “regulations for the body” (9:10) anticipates the ceremonial/moral cleansing contrast fully developed at 9:13-14 |
Chapter 10
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 10:1-4 | The Law’s sacrifices, repeated endlessly, can never perfect worshipers | — | Continues the argument from chs. 8-9 | ಛಾಯೆ/ಸತ್ಯಸ್ವರೂಪ — shadow vs. true form, distinct Kannada terms required within the same verse |
| Hebrews 10:5-7 | Christ’s incarnation and obedient self-offering announced in messianic prophecy | Christ | Direct quotation: Psalm 40:6-8 | ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ [BASELINE]; “a body you have prepared for me” — direct incarnation-doctrine text, Critical |
| Hebrews 10:8-10 | Christ’s single offering of his body sets aside the old sacrificial system | Christ | Continues Psalm 40 quotation | ಒಂದೇ ಸಲ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೂ/ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ — the “once for all” and “sanctified” vocabulary converge here |
| Hebrews 10:11-14 | Christ’s single sacrifice contrasted with the priests’ repeated standing service | Christ; Levitical priests | Contrast summary | ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸು — completed status by faith, not progressive attainment |
| Hebrews 10:15-18 | The Spirit’s own testimony repeats the new covenant promise | Holy Spirit | Direct (repeated) quotation: Jeremiah 31:33-34 | Same cross-curriculum consistency rule as Hebrews 8:8-12/Romans 11:26-27 above |
| Hebrews 10:19-22 | Bold access into the Holy Place through Christ’s blood and torn flesh/veil | Christ | Develops the καταπέτασμα (“veil”) image from 9:3 | ಪರದೆ/ಧೈರ್ಯ — direct, unmediated access; cross-reference required linking 9:3 forward to 10:19-20 as one argument |
| Hebrews 10:23-25 | Exhortation to hold fast the confession, stir up love, not neglect meeting together | — | No direct quotation | ಅರಿಕೆ (“confession”) — confession OF faith, cf. Romans 10:9-10’s ಕರ್ತ-confession, for cross-curriculum vocabulary alignment |
| Hebrews 10:26-31 | Severe warning against deliberate sin after receiving the truth | — | Direct quotations: Deuteronomy 17:6 (two/three witnesses) and Deuteronomy 32:35-36 | ಬೇಕೆಂದೇ ಪಾಪ ಮಾಡುವುದು — Critical; Deuteronomy 32:35 (“Vengeance is mine, I will repay”) is also directly quoted in Romans 12:19. Rendering-consistency rule: this exact OT clause must be rendered identically in both curricula — ಮುಯ್ಯಿಗೆ ತೀರಿಸುವುದು ನನ್ನದು (or the established Kannada Bible OT wording) — since the same verse is doctrinally load-bearing in both a personal-ethics context (Romans 12) and an apostasy-warning context (Hebrews 10) |
| Hebrews 10:32-34 | Recollection of past faithfulness under persecution | — | No direct quotation | ಸಹೋದರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ/ಸಹನೆ — perseverance under trial |
| Hebrews 10:35-39 | Call to hold confidence; the righteous live by faith, not shrinking back | — | Direct quotation: Habakkuk 2:3-4 | CRITICAL cross-curriculum rendering-consistency rule. Habakkuk 2:4 (“the righteous shall live by faith”) is quoted at Hebrews 10:38 and is also the OT anchor of Romans 1:17 (“as it is written, ‘The one who is righteous by faith shall live’”), the thesis-statement verse the baseline AI requirements document specifically mandates be rendered identically across all documents. The Kannada rendering of Habakkuk 2:4 used in Hebrews 10:38 MUST be verbatim identical to the rendering already fixed for Romans 1:17. This is the single most important cross-curriculum consistency requirement in this entire analysis |
Chapter 11
| Hebrews passage | Theme | Related character(s) | OT/NT connection | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hebrews 11:1-3 | Definition of faith; the universe made by God’s word | — | General creation allusion (Genesis 1:1) | ದೃಢನಿಶ್ಚಯ/ಎಲೆಂಚೋಸ್ — distinct Kannada word from ὑπόστασις at 1:3, per the cross-reference rule fixed in the core glossary |
| Hebrews 11:4 | Abel’s faith-offering commended over Cain’s | Abel; Cain | Narrative reference: Genesis 4:3-10 | ಎಬೆಲ್ — low risk; supports the “Faith of the Old Testament Saints” curriculum doctrine |
| Hebrews 11:5-6 | Enoch’s faith and translation without death | Enoch | Narrative reference: Genesis 5:21-24 | ಹನೋಕ್ — low risk, OT-background footnote helpful |

| Hebrews 11:8-12 | Abraham and Sarah’s faith in the promise of descendants and a land | Abraham; Sarah | Narrative reference: Genesis 12:1-4; 15:5-6; 17:15-19; 21:1-7 | ಅಬ್ರಹಾಮ/ಸಾರಾ — Critical doctrinal continuity: Genesis 15:6 (“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”) is not directly quoted in Hebrews 11 but is the same narrative episode expounded at length in Romans 4:1-25 using [BASELINE ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ “imputed righteousness”]. Rendering-consistency rule: although Hebrews 11:8-12 emphasizes faith’s persevering trust rather than the forensic imputation Romans 4 draws from the same episode, the Abraham narrative vocabulary (ವಾಗ್ದಾನ “promise,” ನಂಬಿಕೆ “faith,” ಸಂತತಿ “offspring/descendants”) should be kept consistent so a learner studying both curricula recognizes one continuous Abraham narrative under two complementary doctrinal lenses |
| Hebrews 11:13-16 | The patriarchs as strangers and exiles seeking a heavenly city | Abraham, Isaac, Jacob (implicit) | Genesis 23:4; 47:9 (patriarchal self-description as sojourners) | ಪರದೇಶಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗಳು/ನಗರ — anticipates Hebrews 12:22 and 13:14’s city-language; render the “seeking a city” theme consistently across all three passages |
| Hebrews 11:17-19 | Abraham’s offering of Isaac; Isaac received back “as from the dead” | Abraham; Isaac | Narrative reference: Genesis 22:1-14 | ಅಬ್ರಹಾಮ/ಇಸಾಕ — a recognized typological foreshadowing of resurrection ([BASELINE ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ]) and of the Father giving up the Son (cf. Romans 8:32, “he did not spare his own Son” — a close doctrinal echo of Genesis 22’s “you have not withheld your son”). Flag for theologian review given the weight of this Isaac-as-resurrection-type connection |
| Hebrews 11:20 | Isaac’s blessing of Jacob and Esau | Isaac; Jacob; Esau | Narrative reference: Genesis 27:27-29, 39-40 | ಇಸಾಕ/ಯಾಕೋಬ/ಏಸಾವ್ — prepares the negative Esau example developed at Hebrews 12:16-17 |
| Hebrews 11:21 | Jacob’s blessing of Joseph’s sons | Jacob; Joseph | Narrative reference: Genesis 48:8-20 | ಯಾಕೋಬ/ಯೋಸೇಫ — low risk |

| Hebrews 11:23-28 | Moses’ parents, Moses’ choice to suffer with God’s people, the Passover, the exodus | Moses | Narrative reference: Exodus 2:1-10; 12:1-30 | ಮೋಶೆ — the Passover reference (11:28) is a significant typological link, though undeveloped here compared to Hebrews’ sustained sacrificial/priestly typology elsewhere; low-medium risk, background footnote recommended |
| Hebrews 11:29 | Crossing the Red Sea by faith | The Israelites | Narrative reference: Exodus 14:21-31 | ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲ್ [BASELINE] — low risk |
| Hebrews 11:30-31 | The fall of Jericho’s walls; Rahab’s faith | Rahab | Narrative reference: Joshua 6:1-25; 2:1-21 | ರಹಾಬ್ — low risk; notable as a Gentile woman commended for faith, a thematic echo of the Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine strongly established in the Romans baseline |
| Hebrews 11:32-38 | Summary roll call: Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, the prophets, and unnamed martyrs | Gideon; Barak; Samson; Jephthah; David; Samuel; prophets | Narrative references: Judges 6-8 (Gideon); Judges 4-5 (Barak); Judges 13-16 (Samson); Judges 11 (Jephthah); 1 Samuel 16-2 Samuel (David); 1 Samuel 1-25 (Samuel); unnamed martyrs echo 1-2 Maccabees background (non-canonical, not to be cited as Scripture) | ಗಿದ್ಯೋನ/ದಾವೀದ [BASELINE ದಾವೀದ reused] — David’s presence here is the SAME proper name governed by [BASELINE ದಾವೀದ, risk Medium] used throughout Romans (1:3; 4:6; 11:9) — reuse exactly |
| Hebrews 11:39-40 | The OT saints commended for faith, yet not receiving the promise apart from us | — | Concluding theological summary | ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ ಪಡೆಯುವುದು — ties OT faith and NT fulfillment into one continuous story, supporting the Fulfillment of Prophecy doctrine shared with Romans |
Chapter 12

| Hebrews 12:18-21 | Contrast: the terrifying, mediated approach to Sinai | Moses (implicit) | Direct/composite allusion: Exodus 19:12-19; 20:18-21; Deuteronomy 4:11-12; 9:19 | ಭಯ/ನಡುಗು (“fear/trembling”) — this fearsome, distant approach is the deliberate foil for the next section’s “you have come” |
| Hebrews 12:22-24 | Contrast: believers have already come to Mount Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem, God the judge, Jesus the mediator, and the sprinkled blood | Christ; angels; “spirits of the righteous made perfect” | Composite theological summary; echoes Hebrews 9:19-21’s sprinkling vocabulary | ಚೀಯೋನ್ ಪರ್ವತ/ಸ್ವರ್ಗೀಯ ಯೆರೂಸಲೇಮ್/ಸಿಂಪಡಿಸಿದ ರಕ್ತ — the immediacy-versus-distance contrast with 12:18-21 is the passage’s central rhetorical point; render both halves so the contrast is visible |

| Hebrews 12:28-29 | Worship God acceptably, with reverence, for he is a consuming fire | God | Direct quotation: Deuteronomy 4:24 | ದಹಿಸುವ ಬೆಂಕಿ — fearsome judgment against apostasy, not merely a purifying-refinement image alone |

| Hebrews 13:7-9 | Remember and imitate faithful leaders; Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, forever | Christ | No direct OT quotation | ನಿತ್ಯ [BASELINE-adjacent] — Christ’s unchanging identity, personal not metaphysical-abstract |
| Hebrews 13:10-13 | The Christian altar; Christ’s suffering “outside the gate” | Christ | Typological allusion: Leviticus 16:27 (bodies of the Day of Atonement sin offering burned outside the camp) | ಬಲಿಪೀಠ/ಬಾಗಿಲ ಹೊರಗೆ — never ಯಜ್ಞವೇದಿಕೆ; honor/shame-sensitive passage, native speaker review recommended per baseline convention |
| Hebrews 13:14 | No lasting city here; we seek the city to come | — | Concludes the city-theme begun at 11:10, 16 and 12:22 | ಶಾಶ್ವತ ನಗರ — must be read together with those two passages as one sustained theme |
| Hebrews 13:15-16 | Sacrifice of praise and good works, not literal offerings | — | Allusion: Psalm 50:14 and Hosea 14:2 | ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ ಬಲಿ — cultic vocabulary transposed to ethical/verbal praise |

| Hebrews 13:20-21 | Closing benediction: the God of peace, the great Shepherd, the blood of the eternal covenant | Christ | Allusion: Isaiah 63:11 (shepherd imagery); echoes Exodus 24:8/Hebrews 9:20’s “blood of the covenant” | ನಿತ್ಯ ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆಯ ರಕ್ತ — Critical; must echo, verbatim, every prior occurrence of ರಕ್ತ, ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ, and ನಿತ್ಯ established across chs. 8-9 and 12 |
| Hebrews 13:22-25 | Closing exhortation and greetings | — | No direct quotation | [BASELINE ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸುವುದು “exhort”] reused exactly |

4. Typological Structures
| Type (OT) | Antitype (NT/Christ) | Hebrews location | Translation sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|

5. Cross-Curriculum Parallels with Romans — Rendering-Consistency Rules
The following table isolates every point where Hebrews and Romans share an OT source text, a doctrinal argument, or load-bearing vocabulary already fixed by the baseline. These are binding consistency requirements for Phase 2.
| Shared element | Romans location | Hebrews location | Rendering-consistency rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Habakkuk 2:4 (“the righteous shall live by faith”) | Romans 1:17 (curriculum thesis verse) | Hebrews 10:38 | MANDATORY VERBATIM MATCH. The Kannada rendering of this OT quotation must be identical in both documents. This is the highest-priority single cross-reference in this analysis. |
| Deuteronomy 32:35 (“Vengeance is mine, I will repay”) | Romans 12:19 | Hebrews 10:30 | Mandatory verbatim match for this OT clause in both ethical (Romans) and warning (Hebrews) contexts |
| Deuteronomy 32:43 (Song of Moses, “worship him”/“rejoice with his people”) | Romans 15:10 (different clause) | Hebrews 1:6 | Awareness flag: same OT chapter, different clauses; no verbatim overlap required, but translators should recognize the shared source |
| Jeremiah 31:31-34 (new covenant) | Romans 11:26-27 (via Isaiah 59:21/27:9, same covenant-promise theme) | Hebrews 8:8-12; 10:16-17 | ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ/ಪಾಪ/ಕ್ಷಮೆ vocabulary must align across both treatments of the eschatological new-covenant promise |
| Genesis 15:6 / Genesis 22 (Abraham’s faith) | Romans 4:1-25 (imputed righteousness, [BASELINE ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ]) | Hebrews 6:13-15; 11:8-19 | Shared Abraham-narrative vocabulary (ಅಬ್ರಹಾಮ, ವಾಗ್ದಾನ, ನಂಬಿಕೆ) kept consistent across both doctrinal lenses (forensic imputation in Romans; persevering trust in Hebrews) |
| Psalm 110:1 (“right hand of God”) | Romans 8:34 (allusion) | Hebrews 1:13; 8:1 (direct quotation) | Consistent phrasing of “at the right hand of God” (ದೇವರ ಬಲಗಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ) |
| Psalm 2:7 / Davidic Sonship | Romans 1:3-4 | Hebrews 1:5; 5:5 | ದೇವರ ಮಗ [BASELINE] rendered identically; both texts argue Christ’s divine Sonship from Davidic-messianic promise |
| Propitiation (ἱλασμός/ἱλαστήριον) | Romans 3:25 | Hebrews 2:17; 9:5 | Same Kannada term (ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ ಬಲಿ / ಕರುಣಾಸನ) and same mandatory standing translator note (God-provided, once-for-all; not self-performed penance) must be applied wherever either curriculum treats this doctrine |
| Grace versus works/merit | Romans 4:4-5; 11:5-6 (Critical guardrail already fixed in baseline) | Hebrews 4:1-11 (“dead works,” “ceasing from works”); Hebrews 6:1 | Same karma-merit / kayaka-dasoha collision guardrail applies; do not introduce new vocabulary that reopens a merit-based reading |
| Universal human need/scope | Romans 3:23; 10:12-13 | Hebrews 2:9 (“for everyone”); Hebrews 9:27-28 (all die, all face judgment) | Retain unqualified universality in both curricula; do not soften |
| ”Called”/calling vocabulary | Romans 1:6-7; 8:28-30 [BASELINE ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ/ಕರೆ] | Hebrews 3:1; 9:15; 11:8 | Reuse baseline terms exactly; context-sensitive sense-check required per baseline’s own methodology note |
| Sanctification vocabulary | Romans 6:19, 22 [BASELINE ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ] | Hebrews 2:11; 9:13-14 (two senses); 10:10, 14, 29; 12:14; 13:12 | Reuse baseline term for the covenantal/moral sense; use the separate ceremonial-cleansing term only where Hebrews 9:13’s OT ritual sense is specifically active |
| Perseverance/endurance under trial | Romans 5:3-4 (ὑπομονή, not separately flagged in baseline but present in the text) | Hebrews 10:36; 12:1 | Render ಸಹನೆ consistently as active, hope-fueled steadfastness in both curricula, never fatalistic resignation |
