Executive Summary
Executive Summary: Matthew 1–28 Kannada Language Package (Phase 1)
Why it matters
Matthew is being added to the same Kannada Language Package that already anchors Romans, for the same readership: Kannada-speaking believers and seekers formed by mainstream Hindu devotional practice, the Udupi-centered Haridasa Krishna-bhakti tradition, and the historically anti-caste, anti-idol Lingayat (Veerashaiva) reform movement. Matthew intensifies every syncretism risk the Romans baseline already flagged (avatar, moksha/mukti/Aikya, dharma, karma-fatalism) and adds a distinct new cluster: Matthew’s own reverential “Kingdom of Heaven” circumlocution, its Danielic “Son of Man” Christology, its climactic Great Commission baptismal mandate, and an unusually dense eschatological vocabulary (parousia, end of the age, Gehenna, regeneration) that sits directly adjacent to Hindu cyclical-time and rebirth cosmology. Getting this Language Package right is the difference between the Beatitudes and the Great Commission being heard as Christ’s own exclusive, historical, once-for-all claims — or being quietly absorbed into a Kannada reader’s existing devotional-attainment framework.
Key findings
- 106 tracked terms total: 47 terms inherited unchanged from the Romans baseline
translation_memory.json, plus 59 new terms this book introduces (Kingdom of Heaven, Son of Man, Emmanuel, Parousia, Baptism, Bind and Loose, Ransom, and 52 others), all now formalized inassets/translation_memory.json. - Term-level risk concentration is high: of the 106 tracked terms, 27 are Critical-risk and 36 are High-risk — 63 terms (59%) require mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence, per
assets/bible_term_registry.json. - Doctrine-level risk concentration is comparably severe: per
assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json, of 44-45 tracked doctrines, 17 are Critical and 20 are High — 37 doctrines requiring mandatory human theologian review, 5 requiring native speaker review, and only 3 clearing at automated-review level. - The core passage (Matthew 5:1-12) is itself high-risk: the Beatitudes introduce or load-bear at least 13 of the newly-tracked terms in a single 12-verse unit, including the curriculum’s single riskiest term-level collision (ಆತ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಡವರು, “poor in spirit,” which must be fenced against the Vedantic ātman and the Lingayat/Advaita soul-destined-for-Aikya-merger).
- Full 28-chapter coverage confirmed: every chapter was reviewed (semantic analysis, glossary, gap analysis, and doctrine analysis all independently trace 1–28); two chapters (14, 15 partially; 11 for doctrine) were explicitly logged as reinforcing existing vocabulary rather than introducing new terms — none silently omitted.
Risks
- The “punar-” root family (ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ / resurrection, ಪುನರಾಗಮನ / parousia, and the absolutely forbidden ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ / rebirth) co-occurs in the same discourse blocks (ch. 24 and chs. 27-28), creating the single highest phonetic-collision risk in the book at precisely its most doctrinally weighty passages.
- Kingdom of Heaven vs. ಸ್ವರ್ಗ is the highest-frequency Critical term (32 occurrences); an intuitive, uncorrected translator default to ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ರಾಜ್ಯ would misdirect the curriculum’s central organizing concept toward a temporary, merit-based, cyclical Hindu paradise.
- Disciple (ಶಿಷ್ಯ) is the highest-frequency term in the entire book with no non-crowded alternative available; its overlap with the guru-shishya paramparā (a multi-teacher, attainment-based framework) is diffuse rather than acute, but shapes the reader’s whole operating model of discipleship if left unfenced.
- Baptism and the Great Commission (28:16-20) concentrate Critical risk at the Church’s single most programmatic, foundational passage; a Lingayat dīkṣā-initiation misreading here would corrupt the ordinance-teaching for the whole curriculum, not just one narrative detail.
- Gehenna/ನರಕ and End of the Age/ಯುಗ both rely on the only available Kannada words also carrying strong, opposite-direction Hindu cosmological meanings (temporary karmic purgation; cyclical cosmic ages) — the risk is not a wrong word choice but a silently wrong theology attached to the only word available.
Opportunities
- Universal Scope and Gentile Inclusion (Magi, centurion, Canaanite woman, “all nations”) has genuine, teachable resonance with the Lingayat movement’s own 900-year-old anti-caste reform history — an opening for connection, provided the curriculum is careful (per
04_comparative_theology.md) not to imply doctrinal equivalence. - Universal Human Accountability (“all have sinned,” inherited from Romans) similarly connects to Lingayat anti-caste conviction as a point of authentic partial agreement before drawing necessary distinctions.
- Matthew’s own “Son of David” vs. “seed of David” distinction, and its inherent-vs-delegated “authority” distinction, give this curriculum a chance to model theological precision-through-translation-notes that can be reused as a template for future NT-book Language Packages in this pipeline.
- The existing Kannada Bible translation tradition already supplies non-ambiguous, established renderings for the highest-risk repeated terms (ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ, ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ, ರಕ್ಷಣೆ), meaning Phase 2 enforcement work is concentrated on the ~59 genuinely new Matthew terms rather than having to re-litigate the whole vocabulary base.
Recommended actions
- Load
assets/translation_memory.json,assets/bible_term_registry.json, andassets/doctrine_risk_registry.jsontogether before any Phase 2 segment processing; treat the Matthew-new forbidden-substitution list (ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ರಾಜ್ಯ, ಯುಗ-rooted end-of-age coinages, ಜನ್ಮ-rooted regeneration coinages, unglossed ಪುನರಾಗಮನ, ಭಕ್ತ for disciple, ಪೂಜಿಸು for Christ’s worship, ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ for repentance, ದೆವ್ವ for Satan) with the same absolute severity as the Romans baseline’s existing list. - Prioritize theologian review scheduling for the 63 Critical/High term occurrences and 37 Critical/High doctrine occurrences, with the Beatitudes (5:1-12), the Olivet Discourse (ch. 24), and the Great Commission (28:16-20) triaged first given their combined doctrinal density and status as, respectively, the core passage, the highest eschatological-risk chapter, and the Church’s foundational mandate.
- Apply standing (not merely first-occurrence) disambiguation notes for the six highest-risk crowded terms identified in
06_linguistic_gap_analysis.mdSection 3 (ಸ್ವರ್ಗ, ನರಕ, ಯುಗ, the punar- family, ಶಿಷ್ಯ, ದೀಕ್ಷೆ/ದೀಕ್ಷಾಸ್ನಾನ) every time the associated doctrine is taught, not just at first mention. - Carry forward
12_ai_translation_requirements.md’s (Matthew) escalation rules unmodified into Phase 2, particularly its requirement that the entire Great Commission passage (28:16-20) and the entire Beatitudes passage (5:1-12) receive theologian review as complete units, not merely at the level of individually flagged terms. - Reuse this Language Package’s structure (inherited-term reuse discipline, forbidden-substitution severity tiers, crowded-term fencing notes) as the template for the next book in this curriculum pipeline, since Kannada’s core risk profile — trajectory drift toward Aikya-merger rather than single obviously-wrong words — is now well-documented across two consecutive books.
