Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: The Gospel of Luke (English → Kannada)

Methodology and Governing Rules

This analysis extends, and never contradicts, the baseline Romans Language Package for Kannada. Every term already recorded in translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json (e.g. ದೇವರು, ಯೇಸು, ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, ರಕ್ಷಣೆ, ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ, ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ, ಕರ್ತ, ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ, ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ, ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು, ಪ್ರವಾದಿ, ದಾವೀದ, ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲ್, ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯ, ದೇವರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ, ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ, ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ, etc.) is reused verbatim in this document. New entries below are needed because Luke’s narrative — travel, healing, meals, parables, prayer, the poor, repentance — surfaces a distinct load-bearing vocabulary that Romans, an epistle, does not require in the same density.

Karnataka’s religious landscape (Vīraśaiva/Liṅgāyat śatsthala and Aikya theology, Haridāsa Kṛṣṇa-bhakti, mainstream Vedantic/Purāṇic Hinduism, and coastal Karnataka’s Bhūta Kōla spirit-worship tradition) continues to be the primary syncretism-risk lens, exactly as in the Romans package, now joined by a Karnataka-wide social reality especially salient in Luke: caste-conditioned commensality (who may eat with whom), which makes Luke’s table-fellowship material unusually loaded.

Each entry below records: Original word | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: Luke 4:16-21 (Verse-by-Verse)

Luke 4:16

TermOriginal / Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
synagogueσυναγωγή / synagōgē”a bringing together, assembly place”Jewish local assembly for Scripture reading, prayer, teaching”synagogue”The institutional setting Jesus deliberately uses to announce his mission publicly, from within Israel’s own worship lifeಸಭಾಮಂದಿರ (sabhāmandira). Medium risk: must be visually/conceptually distinct from ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ/ಗುಡಿ (Hindu temple, already forbidden for “church” in baseline) and from ಸಭೆ (church, baseline) — a synagogue is a Jewish assembly-hall, historically and doctrinally prior to but distinct from ಸಭೆ.
Sabbathσάββατον / sabbaton”rest day”The seventh-day covenant rest of Israel”Sabbath,” “the Sabbath day”Jesus’ custom of Sabbath synagogue attendance situates him inside Torah-observant Jewish life before he reveals its fulfillmentಸಬ್ಬತ್ / ಸಬ್ಬತ್ ದಿನ (sabbat dina). Low-Medium risk: transliterated, established Kannada Christian term; avoid confusing with a generic “holy day” (ಹಬ್ಬ) which suggests a festival rather than the weekly covenant rest.
custom/habitεἰωθός / eiōthos”being accustomed”Established practice, regular habit”custom,” “as was his custom”Signals Jesus’ lifelong faithful practice, grounding his authority in continuity with, not rejection of, Jewish worshipವಾಡಿಕೆ/ರೂಢಿ (vāḍike). Low risk.
to readἀναγνῶναι / anagnōnai (aor. inf. of ἀναγιγνώσκω)“to read aloud, recognize again”Public liturgical reading of Scripture”to read,” “stood up to read”Jesus takes the reader’s role reserved for a qualified male member of the congregation — a position of teaching authority, not spectatorshipಓದಲು (ōdalu). Low risk.

Luke 4:17

TermOriginal / Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
scroll/bookβιβλίον / biblion”small book, scroll”Any written document; here the Isaiah scroll”book,” “scroll”The physical scroll of Isaiah, God’s written prophetic word, is the vehicle of the announcement — grounding Jesus’ claim in inspired Scripture, not private mystical insightಗ್ರಂಥ/ಸುರುಳಿ (grantha/suruḷi). Low-Medium risk: distinguish from ವಚನ (vachana), the term for the inspired-but-not-scriptural devotional verse literature of the Vīraśaiva Śaraṇa poet-saints (already flagged in the baseline’s inspiration-of-Scripture doctrine note) — Isaiah’s ಗ್ರಂಥ is categorically God-breathed Scripture.
prophetπροφήτης / prophētēs”one who speaks forth”God’s inspired spokesperson”prophet”Reuse baseline ಪ್ರವಾದಿ (pravādi), Low risk per Romans TM.
IsaiahἨσαΐας / Ēsaiasproper nameThe OT prophet”Isaiah”Reuse baseline transliteration ಯೆಶಾಯ (Yeśāya), per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md proper-name table.
unrolled/openedἀναπτύξας / anaptyxas”having unrolled”Physical act of opening a scroll”unrolled,” “opened”Deliberate, purposeful search for this specific text — Jesus selects, not stumbles upon, this passageಬಿಚ್ಚಿ (bicci, “having opened/unrolled”). Low risk.

Luke 4:18

This is the theological hinge of the whole curriculum. Every clause is load-bearing.

TermOriginal / Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
Spirit of the LordΠνεῦμα κυρίου / Pneuma kyriou”Spirit of the Lord”The Holy Spirit as agent of empowerment/anointing”Spirit of the Lord,” “the Lord’s Spirit”The same Spirit active at Jesus’ conception (1:35) and baptism (3:22) now publicly commissions him for messianic ministry — the Spirit’s-work-in-salvation-history doctrine anchor verseReuse baseline ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ (Pavitrātma), Critical, never ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ. Render phrase as ಕರ್ತನ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ.
anointedἔχρισέν / echrisen (aor. of χρίω, chriō)“smeared/rubbed with oil”Ritual/messianic designation to office (prophet, priest, king); root of Χριστός/Messiah”anointed,” “has anointed”God’s Spirit-empowerment of Jesus for his messianic office — the verbal root of “Christ” itself; this is Jesus publicly claiming to be the Messiah of Isaiah 61ಅಭಿಷೇಕಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ (abhiṣēkisiddāne). CRITICAL RISK, grounded: ಅಭಿಷೇಕ is the standard Kannada/Sanskrit term for the ritual pouring of sacred substances (milk, water, honey) over a deity’s image or liṅga — most visible in Karnataka in Śaiva/Vīraśaiva Rudrābhiṣēka worship and in the great public Mahāmastakābhiṣēka anointing of the Gommateshvara statue at Shravanabelagola. There is no equally established alternative Kannada Christian term, so ಅಭಿಷೇಕಿಸು must be retained, but EVERY occurrence requires a translator note distinguishing: here the Spirit’s anointing is a one-time, unrepeatable, divine commissioning of a living person for saving office, not a devotee’s ritual act of honor performed upon a divine image.
to preach good newsεὐαγγελίσασθαι / euangelisasthai”to announce good news”Verbal form of εὐαγγέλιον/gospel”to preach good news,” “to bring good news,” “to proclaim glad tidings”The Isaiah promise fulfilled: proclamation of good news is Jesus’ defining mission, tied grammatically to ಸುವಾರ್ತೆReuse baseline root ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ; verb ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ ಸಾರು/ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ ಸಾರುವುದು (suvārte sāruvudu). High risk per baseline: must convey the one authoritative saving announcement, not a general uplifting message competing with other traditions’ “good teachings” (Haridāsa kīrtane, Śaraṇa vachana).
poorπτωχοῖς / ptōchois (dat. pl. of πτωχός)“reduced to beggary, destitute”Economic poverty; by extension the powerless, marginalized, those with no social leverage — Luke’s programmatic category”the poor”The gospel’s first named addressee. Central to this curriculum’s “Good News to the Poor and Marginalized” doctrine: both literal economic poor and, by extension in Luke’s usage, all who stand before God empty-handedಬಡವರು (baḍavaru). Medium-High risk: must not be spiritualized away into a purely metaphorical “humble in spirit” category (losing Luke’s insistence on actual economic and social poverty, ch. 6:20 “blessed are you poor,” ch. 14:13 “invite the poor”), while also not excluding the spiritually humble sense present elsewhere. Requires translator note per occurrence context.
sentἀπέσταλκέν / apestalken (perf. of ἀποστέλλω)“has sent/commissioned”Authoritative sending with a mandate; root of ἀπόστολος/apostle”he has sent me,” “he has commissioned me”Establishes Jesus’ mission as one of delegated divine sending, paralleling but exceeding the apostolic sending pattern already flagged in RomansVerb form of reuse baseline ಅಪೊಸ್ತಲ root; render ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ (kaḷuhisiddāne, “has sent”). Medium risk: keep the sense of an authoritative divine commission, distinct from a self-appointed teaching role (guru/ಜಂಗಮ), per baseline apostleship doctrine note.
to proclaim/heraldκηρύξαι / kēryxai (aor. inf. of κηρύσσω)“to herald as a town-crier”Public, authoritative proclamation”to proclaim,” “to preach,” “to announce”The public, unashamed character of gospel proclamation — not a private mystical teaching passed esotericallyಸಾರು/ಸಾರುವುದು (sāruvudu, “to proclaim publicly”). Low-Medium risk.
captivesαἰχμαλώτοις / aichmalōtois (dat. pl. of αἰχμάλωτος)“one taken by the spear,” prisoner of warLiteral captivity; extended to bondage to sin/oppression”captives,” “prisoners”Echoes the Isaiah 61/Jubilee (Leviticus 25) release of those bound — both a literal social concern and a picture of liberation from sin’s bondageಸೆರೆಯವರು/ಬಂದಿಗಳು (bandhigaḷu). Medium risk: preserve the double reference (literal captivity and bondage to sin) rather than collapsing to only one sense.
release/forgivenessἄφεσιν / aphesin (acc. of ἄφεσις)“a sending away, letting go”Release from captivity; forgiveness/remission of sins (its dominant NT sense)“release,” “liberty,” “forgiveness,” “remission”Central term of the whole curriculum’s “Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins” doctrine. The same Greek word covers both the captives’ “release” and (elsewhere in Luke, e.g. 1:77, 3:3, 24:47) “forgiveness of sins” — a deliberate wordplay linking Jubilee liberation to the forgiveness Jesus grantsHIGH RISK — translator note required at every occurrence. Kannada has no single word carrying both senses: “release” of captives = ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ (biḍugaḍe); “forgiveness” of sins = ಕ್ಷಮೆ (kṣame). Splitting the word loses Luke’s deliberate wordplay tying social liberation to the forgiveness of sins; footnote must flag this for every study-note treatment of 4:18 and its echoes at 1:77, 3:3, 24:47.
blindτυφλοῖς / typhlois (dat. pl. of τυφλός)“blind”Literal blindness; by extension spiritual blindness”the blind”Both literal healing ministry (ch. 7, 18) and a picture of spiritual sight restoredಕುರುಡರು (kuruḍaru). Low risk.
recovery of sightἀνάβλεψιν / anablepsin”a looking up again, regaining sight”Restoration of vision”recovery of sight,” “sight”Fulfilled literally in Luke’s healing narratives (7:21, 18:35-43) as embodied proof of the Isaiah promiseದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಪಡೆಯುವಿಕೆ (dṛṣṭi paḍeyuvike). Low risk.
oppressed/crushedτεθραυσμένους / tethrausmenous (perf. pass. ptc. of θραύω)“shattered, crushed, broken”Those crushed by hardship, oppression, or affliction”the oppressed,” “the downtrodden,” “the bruised”Those broken by circumstance — social, physical, or spiritual — whom Jesus liberatesಜಜ್ಜಲ್ಪಟ್ಟವರು/ಬಾಧಿತರು (bādhitaru). Low-Medium risk.

Luke 4:19

Greek: κηρύξαι ἐνιαυτὸν κυρίου δεκτόν.

TermOriginal / Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
acceptable/favorable year of the Lordἐνιαυτὸν κυρίου δεκτόν / eniauton kyriou dekton”an acceptable/welcome year of the Lord”Echoes the Jubilee year of Leviticus 25 (debt-release, land-return, liberty proclaimed every fiftieth year)“the year of the Lord’s favor,” “the acceptable year of the Lord,” “the year of jubilee”Jesus announces the in-breaking of God’s eschatological Jubilee — the decisive era of grace, release, and restoration now beginning in his own ministryಕರ್ತನ ಕೃಪಾವರುಷ / ಕರ್ತನ ಸ್ವೀಕಾರಾರ್ಹ ವರುಷ (kartana kṛpāvarusha). High risk, grounded: must not be heard through the Kannada astrological-calendrical idea of a “ಶುಭ ವರ್ಷ” (auspicious year), determined by planetary configuration/muhūrta calculation. This is not a naturally recurring auspicious cycle but the unrepeatable, historical in-breaking of God’s saving purpose in Christ — requires a translator note connecting it to ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ/Jubilee background, since OT literacy cannot be assumed.

Luke 4:20

TermOriginal / Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
rolled upπτύξας / ptyxas”having folded/rolled”Closing the scroll”rolled up,” “closed”Deliberate, composed action before speaking — Jesus is in full control of the momentಮಡಚಿ (maḍaci). Low risk.
attendantὑπηρέτῃ / hypēretē (dat. of ὑπηρέτης)“under-rower,” subordinate assistantSynagogue attendant who cared for the scrolls”attendant,” “assistant,” “minister”A minor liturgical office; establishes the ordinary, orderly synagogue setting for an extraordinary claimಸೇವಕ (sēvaka, “servant/attendant”). Low risk.
sat downἐκάθισεν / ekathisen”sat down”The posture of an authoritative teacher in the synagogue (teaching was normally done seated)“sat down”Signals Jesus is about to teach with recognized rabbinic authorityಕುಳಿತನು (kuḷitanu). Low risk.
gazing intentlyἀτενίζοντες / atenizontes (pres. ptc. of ἀτενίζω)“staring fixedly, gazing intently”Focused, expectant attention”were fixed on him,” “were gazing intently”The whole congregation senses something decisive is about to be announcedದೃಷ್ಟಿ ನೆಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು (dṛṣṭi neṭṭiddaru, “had fixed their gaze”). Low risk.

Luke 4:21

Greek: ἤρξατο δὲ λέγειν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὅτι Σήμερον πεπλήρωται ἡ γραφὴ αὕτη ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν ὑμῶν.

TermOriginal / Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
todayΣήμερον / Sēmeron”today, this very day”The emphatic, fronted first word of Jesus’ sermon — Luke’s recurring marker of the present in-breaking of salvation (cf. 2:11; 19:9; 23:43)“today,” “this very day,” “now”The decisive theological claim: fulfillment is not future or merely predicted, but happening now, in this hearing, in this roomಇಂದು (indu). Medium-High risk: the word’s emphatic fronted position in the Greek carries argumentative weight (God’s saving “now” breaking into ordinary time) that a plain Kannada word order may flatten; translators should preserve sentence-initial emphasis (“ಇಂದೇ…” / “ಇಂದು ಇದೇ…” ) and note the recurrence of this theme at 2:11, 19:9, 23:43 for consistency across the curriculum.
fulfilledπεπλήρωται / peplērōtai (perf. pass. of πληρόω)“has been filled up, completed”Prophetic fulfillment; a completed action with ongoing present relevance (perfect tense)“is fulfilled,” “has been fulfilled”Ties directly to the baseline’s Fulfillment of Prophecy doctrine: one-time, linear, historical fulfillment — not a cyclical or repeatable eventನೆರವೇರಿತು (neravēritu). High risk (extends baseline fulfillment-of-prophecy caution): must not be assimilated to the cyclical yuga-time of mainstream Hindu cosmology nor to the incremental, individual, stage-by-stage advancement of the Vīraśaiva śatsthala path. This is a single, historical, once-for-all fulfillment for all peoples.
Scriptureγραφή / graphē”writing”The written, authoritative OT text (here, specifically the Isaiah scroll just read)“Scripture,” “this Scripture,” “this passage”God’s own inspired written word, now announced as historically fulfilled in the hearers’ presenceಗ್ರಂಥ/ವಚನ — use ಗ್ರಂಥ, not ವಚನ (see note at 4:17); ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯ / ಈ ಗ್ರಂಥವಚನ (ī grantha-vākya) is the safer compound. Medium risk: avoid ವಚನ alone, given its strong specific association with Vīraśaiva Śaraṇa devotional-poetic literature.
earsὠσίν / ōsin (dat. pl. of οὖς)“ears”Literal hearing; the immediacy of aural reception”your ears,” “your hearing”Fulfillment is not abstract but personally, presently heard by this congregation — direct addressಕಿವಿಗಳು (kivigaḷu). Low risk.

PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Analysis of the Whole Book (Luke 1–24)

Chapter 1 — Infancy Narrative I: Annunciations, Magnificat, Benedictus

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
angel/messengerἄγγελος / angelos”messenger”Heavenly messenger of God”angel”Gabriel as God’s authoritative messenger announcing salvation history’s turning pointದೇವದೂತ (dēvadūta). Low-Medium risk: keep as God’s sent messenger, not a minor deity or intermediary spirit comparable to folk bhūta-spirits.
favor/graceχάρις / charis”grace, favor”Unmerited divine favor”favor,” “grace”Mary “found favor” — undeserved divine choice, not merit (1:30)Reuse baseline ಕೃಪೆ (kṛpe), High risk per Romans TM — same grace-vs-merit caution applies (contra karma-merit economy, kayaka-dasoha ethic).
virginπαρθένος / parthenos”virgin, unmarried young woman”Sexual virginity; sometimes loosely “young woman""virgin”Mary’s literal virginity is doctrinally essential to the Incarnationಕನ್ಯೆ (kanye). Critical risk: must affirm literal virginal conception (Isaiah 7:14 fulfillment), not merely “young unmarried woman”; directly supports the baseline’s Incarnation doctrine (never ಅವತಾರ).
overshadowἐπισκιάζω / episkiazō”to cast a shadow upon, cover”Divine creative/enveloping presence (cf. Exodus 40:35 cloud over the tabernacle)“overshadow,” “come upon”The Spirit’s unique, unrepeatable creative act producing the incarnate Son — not a recurring mystical descentನೆರಳಿನಂತೆ ಆವರಿಸು (neraḷinante āvarisu). High risk: must not be rendered in a way suggestive of a repeatable avatar-style divine descent or a yogic/tantric energy-descent experience; this is the unique conception of the eternal Son (reinforces baseline’s ಅವತಾರ prohibition).
Son of Godυἱὸς θεοῦ / huios theousee baselineGabriel’s own title for the child (1:32, 35)Reuse baseline ದೇವರ ಮಗ, Critical.
Most Highὕψιστος / hypsistos”highest”Divine title emphasizing supremacy”Most High”Emphasizes God’s supremacy over all other claimed powers, deities, or spiritual beings in the Karnataka religious landscapeಸರ್ವೋನ್ನತ (sarvōnnata) / ಮಹೋನ್ನತ (mahōnnata). Medium-High risk: must retain unqualified supremacy — not “a” high god among many but the one supreme God, guarding against a henotheistic reading familiar from popular Hindu devotional practice.
throne of Davidθρόνος Δαυίδ / thronos DauidDavidic kingship promise”throne of David”Reuse baseline ದಾವೀದ (Dāvīda) + covenant vocabulary; ties to Davidic Covenant doctrine (already High risk in Romans).
mercyἔλεος / eleos”mercy, covenant loyalty”Steadfast covenantal kindness (Hebrew ḥesed background)“mercy”The Magnificat’s refrain: God’s mercy to the humble across generationsಕರುಣೆ (karuṇe). Medium risk: distinguish covenantal mercy toward the humble from a generic feeling of pity, and from bhakti’s this-for-that devotional exchange already flagged under baseline “grace.”
humble/lowlyταπείνωσις / tapeinōsis”lowliness, humiliation”Social lowliness and/or humility of spirit”humble estate,” “lowliness”God exalts the socially humble — thematic seed of Luke’s whole “reversal” motif (rich/poor, exalted/humble)ದೀನಸ್ಥಿತಿ/ದೀನತೆ (dīnate). Medium risk: keep both social-status and spiritual senses; do not collapse to only interior humility.
horn of salvationκέρας σωτηρίας / keras sōtērias”horn of salvation” (ANE idiom for royal/martial power)Figurative for mighty deliverance”horn of salvation”Idiom requiring explanation; ties σωτηρία to reuse baseline ರಕ್ಷಣೆರಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಕೊಂಬು — idiom handling per baseline rules; render meaning plainly with a footnote (mighty/powerful deliverer), not a literal image unfamiliar in Kannada.
redemptionλύτρωσις / lytrōsis”a ransoming, releasing by payment”Deliverance, often with a “payment/cost” nuance”redemption”God has visited and worked redemption for his people (1:68)ವಿಮೋಚನೆ (vimōcane). High risk: ವಿಮೋಚನೆ can overlap semantically with “liberation” language used for mokṣa/mukti; must be anchored to the specific redemptive-historical act of God in Christ (paying the cost of sin’s bondage), never the dissolution-of-self liberation of Vedantic or Aikya frameworks — extends baseline salvation caution.
visitedἐπισκέπτομαι / episkeptomai”to look upon, attend to”Gracious divine visitation for deliverance”has visited,” “has come to help”God’s saving, personal in-breaking into history (1:68, 78; 7:16)ಭೇಟಿಕೊಟ್ಟನು/ಪರಾಂಬರಿಸಿದನು (parāmarisidanu). Medium risk: convey purposeful redemptive visitation, not a casual social call.
holy and righteousἅγιος/δίκαιοςsee baselineJohn’s parents’ description; also Zechariah/Elizabeth “righteous before God” (1:6)Reuse baseline ಪವಿತ್ರ / ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ family.
prophetπροφήτηςJohn named “prophet of the Most High” (1:76)Reuse baseline ಪ್ರವಾದಿ.
covenant/oathδιαθήκη / ὅρκοςGod’s remembered covenant and oath to Abraham (1:72-73)Reuse baseline ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ; oath ಪ್ರಮಾಣ/ಆಣೆ (Low-Medium risk, standard).

Chapter 2 — Infancy Narrative II: Birth, Shepherds, Presentation, Simeon and Anna

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
good news/glad tidings (verb)εὐαγγελίζομαι / euangelizomai”to announce good news”Verb form, angel to shepherds (2:10)“bring good news,” “good tidings”The gospel’s first proclamation, to shepherds — socially marginal, ceremonially suspect figures — establishing Luke’s “poor/marginalized” theme from the outsetReuse baseline root ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ; verb ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ ಸಾರುತ್ತೇನೆ. High risk per baseline.
great joyχαρὰ μεγάλη / chara megalē”great joy”Joy attending the gospel announcement”great joy”The gospel produces joy as its natural fruit — first named response to the incarnationಮಹಾ ಸಂತೋಷ (mahā santōṣa). Medium-High risk: prefer ಸಂತೋಷ over ಆನಂದ; ಆನಂದ carries strong Vedantic/bhakti “bliss” connotations (sat-chit-ānanda; Kṛṣṇa-prema-ānanda in Haridāsa devotion; mystical bliss of Aikya-union) that could reframe gospel joy as a state of mystical absorption rather than relational, historically-grounded rejoicing over a specific saving event.
glory of the Lordδόξα κυρίου / doxa kyriousee baselineThe visible divine radiance surrounding the announcement (2:9)Reuse baseline ಮಹಿಮೆ, High risk.
peace on earthεἰρήνη ἐπὶ γῆς / eirēnē epi gēssee baselineThe angelic doxology’s climax; peace tied to God’s favor toward humanity through Christ’s birthReuse baseline ಶಾಂತಿ, Medium risk.
Saviorσωτήρ / sōtēr”one who saves/delivers”Deliverer, rescuer; a common Greco-Roman imperial title also (Caesar as “savior”)“Savior""A Savior has been born… Christ the Lord” — the term is deliberately claimed away from the emperor cult context for Jesus aloneರಕ್ಷಕ (rakṣaka). Critical risk: built on baseline ರಕ್ಷಣೆ; must not be read as one deliverer/protector among many chosen personal deities (iṣṭa-devatā) in bhakti practice, nor merely a benefactor-king title; this is the unique, universal Savior of all nations.
Christ the LordΧριστὸς κύριος / Christos kyriosThe fullest early Christological title in Luke, joining Messiah and LordReuse baseline ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯ/ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ + ಕರ್ತ, both Critical.
consolation of Israelπαράκλησις τοῦ Ἰσραήλ / paraklēsis tou Israēl”comfort, encouragement”Messianic hope-fulfillment awaited by faithful Israel”consolation of Israel”Simeon’s messianic expectation, fulfilled in seeing the infant Jesusಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲಿನ ಸಂತೈಕೆ/ಆದರಣೆ (ādaraṇe). Medium risk: tie to reuse baseline ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲ್.
light for revelation to the Gentilesφῶς εἰς ἀποκάλυψιν ἐθνῶν / phōs eis apokalypsin ethnōn“a light to lighten the Gentiles”Nunc Dimittis: explicit universal scope — salvation for Gentile nations as well as Israel’s gloryReuse baseline ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು (gentiles); “revelation” ಪ್ರಕಟನೆ (prakaṭane), Medium risk. Directly supports this curriculum’s “Savior for All Nations” doctrine — do not soften the universal claim (cf. baseline’s universal-scope-of-gospel caution).
sign to be opposed / sword through soulσημεῖον ἀντιλεγόμενον / ῥομφαίαForeshadows the cross and Mary’s sufferingವಿರೋಧಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಗುರುತು / ಖಡ್ಗ. Low-Medium risk, standard.
prophetessπροφῆτις / prophētis“prophetess”Anna’s office alongside Simeon, reinforcing Spirit-inspired witness at the incarnation’s thresholdReuse baseline root ಪ್ರವಾದಿ; feminine ಪ್ರವಾದಿನಿ. Low risk.
wisdomσοφία / sophia”wisdom”Intellectual/moral maturity; in Hellenistic Judaism also personified divine Wisdom”wisdom”Jesus’ human growth “in wisdom and stature” (2:52) — genuine human developmentಜ್ಞಾನ (jñāna). High risk: ಜ್ಞಾನ is the technical term for the liberating gnosis of the Advaita Vedānta jñāna-mārga (one of the three classical paths to mokṣa, alongside bhakti and karma). Here it names Jesus’ ordinary, genuine human maturing in understanding — not a path of self-attained enlightenment. A softer compound (ಬುದ್ಧಿ-ಜ್ಞಾನ, buddhi-jñāna, “understanding”) or explanatory note is advisable.

Chapter 3 — John’s Preaching, Baptism, Genealogy

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
repentanceμετάνοια / metanoia”a change of mind/direction”Turning from sin toward God; total reorientation, not mere regret”repentance,” “turning”Central term for this curriculum’s Repentance and Forgiveness doctrine. John’s preparatory ministry: “baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (3:3)ಮಾನಸಾಂತರ (mānasāntara, lit. “turning of the mind/heart”). High risk, grounded: must be distinguished from ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ (prāyaścitta), the major Hindu concept of ritual atonement/expiation performed by the guilty party to remove the effect of sin or wrongdoing through prescribed acts. ಮಾನಸಾಂತರ names a God-ward reorientation of the whole person that receives forgiveness as a gift; it must never be presented as a self-performed expiatory ritual that earns pardon.
baptismβάπτισμα / baptisma; βαπτίζω / baptizō”immersion, washing”Ritual washing signifying repentance and, later, union with Christ”baptism,” “to baptize”John’s baptism of repentance anticipates Christian baptism (cf. Acts); a public, once-for-all riteದೀಕ್ಷಾಸ್ನಾನ (dīkṣāsnāna) — established Kannada Bible term. High risk, grounded: ದೀಕ್ಷೆ (dīkṣā) is precisely the term for initiation into a guru-lineage or spiritual path in Karnataka religion — most concretely the Vīraśaiva/Liṅgāyat liṅga-dīkṣe, the rite in which a jaṅgama guru bestows the personal iṣṭaliṅga on a new devotee. Translators must ensure catechesis and footnotes clarify that Christian baptism is not initiation into a guru-lineage or an ongoing personal spiritual-attainment path, but a once-for-all public identification with repentance and (in Christian baptism) with Christ’s death and resurrection.
forgiveness of sinsἄφεσις ἁμαρτιῶν / aphesis hamartiōn“forgiveness of sins,” “remission of sins”John’s preaching links repentance directly to forgiveness — the same term-pair recurs at 4:18, 24:47Reuse from 4:18 analysis: ಪಾಪ ಕ್ಷಮೆ (pāpa kṣame). High risk — see wordplay note above; keep consistent across all occurrences per the Theological Consistency Rules inherited from the baseline.
wrath to comeὀργὴ / orgē”anger, wrath”God’s righteous judicial anger against sin”wrath to come,” “coming wrath”Warning of certain future judgment, motivating repentance nowಬರುವ ಕೋಪ/ಕ್ರೋಧ (baruva krōdha). Medium risk: must convey righteous judicial wrath of a personal God, not capricious anger; avoid conflation with a deity’s mercurial temper in popular religious narrative.
fruit (worthy of repentance)καρπός / karpos”fruit”The observable moral evidence of a changed life”fruit,” “fruits of repentance”Genuine repentance is inseparable from changed conduct, not mere ritual gestureಫಲ (phala). Medium-High risk: ಫಲ is also the ordinary word for “karma-phala,” the fruit/result generated by an action within the karma mechanism. Here it denotes observable moral evidence flowing from a Spirit-wrought change of heart, not merit accumulated through disciplined action; a clarifying phrase (“ಮಾನಸಾಂತರದ ಫಲ,” “fruit that follows genuine repentance”) helps avoid the karma-merit reading.
Son of God (genealogy)υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦGenealogy traced to “Adam, son of God” (3:38) — humanity’s creation, contrasted with Jesus’ unique Sonship elsewhereReuse baseline ದೇವರ ಮಗ; note context-sensitivity — here of Adam by creation, not the unique divine Sonship of Christ; a translator note may be useful to avoid conflating the two senses.

Chapter 4 (continued — vv. 1-15 and 22-44; core passage 4:16-21 treated above in Part 1)

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
devilδιάβολος / diabolos”slanderer, accuser”Satan, the tempter”devil,” “the tempter”Personal, real spiritual adversary who tests Jesus before his public ministry beginsಪಿಶಾಚ/ಸೈತಾನ (piśāca/saitāna). Medium-High risk: must be a single, personal spiritual adversary, not conflated with the diffuse folk category of malevolent bhūta-spirits addressed through Bhūta Kōla propitiation rites prominent in coastal Karnataka religion.
authorityἐξουσία / exousia”authority, right to act”Delegated or inherent right and power”authority,” “power”Jesus teaches and casts out demons “with authority” (4:32, 36) — intrinsic, not derivative like the scribes’ಅಧಿಕಾರ (adhikāra). Medium-High risk: Jesus’ authority is presented as inherent/divine, not delegated by human office or attained through ascetic practice — distinguish from a guru’s authority recognized because of personal spiritual attainment.
unclean spirit / demonπνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον / δαιμόνιον”unclean spirit”Malevolent spiritual being causing affliction/possession”unclean spirit,” “demon”Jesus’ authoritative, decisive expulsion of evil spirits by his word aloneಅಶುದ್ಧ ಆತ್ಮ / ದುರಾತ್ಮ (aśuddha ātma). High risk, grounded: coastal and rural Karnataka’s living Bhūta Kōla tradition involves ritual propitiation and negotiation with spirit-beings (bhūtas) through possession, offerings, and mediating ritual specialists. Luke’s demon-exorcism narratives must not be assimilated to this propitiation framework — Jesus does not negotiate with, honor, or feed unclean spirits; he expels them by sovereign command. Requires theologian review wherever occurring.
must (divine necessity)δεῖ / dei”it is necessary”Impersonal verb expressing divine plan/necessity”must,” “it is necessary that""I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also” (4:43) — Jesus’ mission driven by divine purposeಅಗತ್ಯ/ಬೇಕು (“ಸಾರಲೇಬೇಕು”). Medium risk: convey purposive divine necessity flowing from God’s saving plan, never fatalistic ಹಣೆಬರಹ (forehead-writing) — same caution as baseline’s Providence doctrine note.
kingdom of Godβασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦsee baselineJesus’ defining mission-summary term (4:43)Reuse baseline ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ, Medium risk.

Chapter 5 — Call of Disciples, Leper, Paralytic, Levi

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
leper/leprosyλεπρός / lepros”leprous, scaly”Person with a skin disease rendering ritual/social impurity in Jewish law”leper”Jesus touches and cleanses the ritually unclean — a paradigm for compassion crossing purity boundariesಕುಷ್ಠರೋಗಿ (kuṣṭharōgi). Medium risk: useful bridge to Indian purity-taboo systems around illness/touch, but must retain Jesus’ scandalous willingness to touch, not merely heal from a distance.
authority to forgive sinsἐξουσίαν ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας / exousian aphienai hamartias“authority on earth to forgive sins”The paralytic healing’s real point: Jesus, as Son of Man, claims divine prerogative to forgive sins, provoking the “who can forgive sins but God alone” objection (5:21-24)Reuse ಪಾಪ ಕ್ಷಮಿಸುವ ಅಧಿಕಾರ. Critical risk: directly supports Deity of Christ doctrine — Jesus exercises a prerogative Scripture reserves to God alone.
Son of Manυἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου / huios tou anthrōpou”son of the man/humanity”Christ’s self-designation; draws on Daniel 7’s exalted heavenly figure while emphasizing genuine humanity”Son of Man”Luke’s most frequent Christological self-title for Jesus, combining humility (genuine humanity) and hidden divine authority (Daniel 7:13-14 background)ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರ (manuṣyakumāra). Critical risk: must retain titular, technical force (a specific, singular, apocalyptic-messianic figure) — never flattened to mean merely “a human being” or “a son of Adam” generically. Requires theologian review at every occurrence (very frequent in Luke: 5:24; 6:5, 22; 7:34; 9:22, 26, 44, 56, 58; 11:30; 12:8, 10, 40; 17:22-30; 18:8, 31; 19:10; 21:27, 36; 22:22, 48, 69; 24:7).
tax collectorτελώνης / telōnēs”toll/tax collector”Roman-collaborating local revenue agent, socially despised, ritually associated with sinners”tax collector,” “publican”Levi’s calling; establishes Jesus’ pattern of calling and dining with social outcastsಸುಂಕದವರು/ಸುಂಕ ವಸೂಲಿಗಾರರು (suṅkadavaru). Low-Medium risk: preserve the social contempt/marginal status attached to the term, parallel to caste-based social exclusion categories in Karnataka context, without importing a specific caste term.
repentance (call to)μετάνοια / verb καλέσαι… εἰς μετάνοιαν“call… to repentance""I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance” (5:32)Reuse ch.3 ಮಾನಸಾಂತರ. High risk, same note.
sinnersἁμαρτωλός / hamartōlos”sinner”Those who transgress; often specifically the social category of the ritually/morally disreputable”sinners”Named table-companions of Jesus; a recurring pairing “tax collectors and sinners” central to the “Compassion and Table Fellowship” doctrineಪಾಪಿಗಳು (pāpigaḷu), built on reuse baseline ಪಾಪ. Low-Medium risk.
new wine / new wineskinsοἶνος νέος / ἀσκοὶ καινοίParable illustrating that the gospel’s newness cannot be contained by old religious formsಹೊಸ ದ್ರಾಕ್ಷಾರಸ / ಹೊಸ ಬುದ್ದಲಿ (ಚರ್ಮದ ಚೀಲ). Low risk, standard parabolic imagery.

blessedμακάριος / makarios”happy, fortunate, blessed”God’s approval/favor pronounced on a state or person”blessed,” “happy”The Beatitudes: God’s favor pronounced specifically on the poor, hungry, weeping, hated (6:20-22) — Luke’s most direct “Good News to the Poor” text outside 4:18ಧನ್ಯರು (dhanyaru). High risk: must convey God’s own pronounced favor/approval on those the world considers unfortunate, not “lucky” (submitting to a fortune/destiny idiom) nor a reward for accumulated merit (puṇya). Central passage for this curriculum’s Good News to the Poor doctrine — requires theologian review alongside Luke 4:18.
woeοὐαί / ouai”alas, woe”Prophetic pronouncement of judgment/warning”woe”The paired woes on rich, full, laughing, well-spoken-of (6:24-26) — Luke’s distinctive reversal theologyಅಯ್ಯೋ/ಶ್ರಮ (ayyō/hāhākāra). Medium risk.
love your enemiesἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθρούς / agapate tous echthrousRadical, distinctive ethical demand grounded in God’s own indiscriminate kindness (6:35-36)ನಿಮ್ಮ ವೈರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಿರಿ. Medium risk: standard vocabulary; ensure ಪ್ರೀತಿ conveys willed, active good toward an enemy, not mere sentiment.

poor have good news preached to themπτωχοὶ εὐαγγελίζονται / ptōchoi euangelizontaiJesus’ answer to John’s question, quoting/echoing Isaiah 61 directly — an explicit callback to 4:18 confirming Jesus’ messianic identity by his actionsDirect reuse of 4:18 terms: ಬಡವರಿಗೆ ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ ಸಾರಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. High risk — must render identically to 4:18’s phrasing for cross-passage consistency, per the Theological Consistency Rules pattern inherited from the baseline.
offended/stumbleσκανδαλισθῇ / skandalisthē”to be caused to stumble, take offense”Loss of faith/trust because Jesus does not meet expectations”offended,” “stumble,” “fall away""Blessed is the one who is not offended by me” (7:23)ಎಡವಿಬೀಳದವನು/ಅಡಚಣೆಪಡದವನು. Low-Medium risk.
forgiveness (much/little)ἄφεσις (implied) / ἀφέωνται / apheōntai“her sins… are forgiven”The sinful woman’s anointing of Jesus’ feet; “he who is forgiven little, loves little” (7:47)Reuse ಪಾಪ ಕ್ಷಮೆ. High risk, same wordplay caution as 4:18.

Critical/High risk: must render consistently across all four occurrences (7:50; 8:48; 17:19; 18:42) per cross-document consistency rules.
table fellowship (implicit: Pharisee’s house)συνανάκειμαι / synanakeimai”to recline at table together”Shared meal, signaling social acceptance/intimacy”reclining at table,” “eating with”Jesus receives the sinful woman’s devotion in a Pharisee’s house — first extended table-fellowship sceneಜೊತೆ ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು. word of Godὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦThe seed of the sower parable; God’s authoritative, powerful, life-giving proclamationದೇವರ ವಾಕ್ಯ (Dēvara vākya). Low-Medium risk, standard established Kannada Christian term.

Medium risk: must not be assimilated to esoteric guru-transmitted secret teaching (as in some tantric or guru-paramparā “secret knowledge” traditions) — this is Spirit-given understanding granted sovereignly by God, not attained through initiation ranks.
faith (has made you well)πίστις σέσωκέν σεThe hemorrhaging woman (8:48)Reuse — see ch. 7 formula.
Legion (demon-possession)δαιμόνια / ΛεγιώνGerasene demoniac’s deliverance — Jesus’ authority extends into Gentile territoryReuse ch. 4 ಅಶುದ್ಧ ಆತ್ಮ note; High risk given Bhūta Kōla parallel already flagged.

Chapter 9 — Mission of the Twelve, Feeding 5000, Confession, Transfiguration, Cost of Following

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
authority over demons/diseaseἐξουσία / δύναμιςThe Twelve given delegated authority — a genuinely delegated apostolic authority, distinct from Jesus’ own intrinsic authority (ch.4)Reuse ಅಧಿಕಾರ/ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ, contextually distinguished from Jesus’ own inherent authority; Medium-High risk.
Christ of Godὁ Χριστὸς τοῦ θεοῦPeter’s confession (9:20) — climactic messianic recognitionReuse baseline ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯ/ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ, Critical.
Chosen Oneἐκλελεγμένος / eklelegmenos”having been chosen/selected”Divine election language applied uniquely to Christ”my Chosen One,” “my Son, whom I have chosen”The Father’s voice at the Transfiguration (9:35), paralleling but distinct from the general doctrine of believers’ electionBuilds on reuse baseline ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ (election). High risk: must be clearly the Father’s unique election/appointment of the Son to his messianic office — not confused with, nor diluted into, the general election-of-believers doctrine treated elsewhere; requires theologian review.
deny self / take up cross / followἀπαρνησάσθω ἑαυτόν, ἀράτω τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ, ἀκολουθείτω μοιThe programmatic cost-of-discipleship saying (9:23) — central to this curriculum’s “Cost and Joy of Discipleship” doctrineSee full glossary entries below: ಶಿಷ್ಯ (disciple)/ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸು (follow)/ಶಿಲುಬೆ (cross)/ನಿರಾಕರಿಸು (deny). High risk, cluster: theologian review recommended as a set, since Luke’s discipleship-cost language recurs at 14:26-33 with even sharper demands.
lose life / save itἀπολέσῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ … σώσει αὐτήν / apolesē tēn psychēn autouParadox: self-preservation forfeits true life; self-giving for Christ’s sake secures itಜೀವ/ಪ್ರಾಣ (jīva/prāṇa) + reuse baseline verb root ರಕ್ಷಿಸು. Medium-High risk: ಜೀವ/ಆತ್ಮ can carry Vedantic “self/soul” connotations (ātman); ensure the saying is read as about one’s whole personal existence and destiny, not a philosophical psyche/ātman losing itself in the absolute.
Samaritan village (rejection)Σαμαρῖται / SamaritaiFirst encounter with Samaritans in the travel narrative, anticipating ch.10 and 17See ch.10 entry.
fit for the kingdomεὔθετός ἐστιν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ θεοῦ“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” (9:62)Reuse baseline ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ. Medium risk: uncompromising, total demand of discipleship.

kingdom of God has come nearἤγγικεν ἐφ᾽ ὑμᾶς ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ / ēngiken”has drawn near, approached”Imminent, already-present arrival”has come near,” “is at hand”Central “Kingdom Present and Future” tension text — the kingdom is genuinely near/present in Jesus’ and his messengers’ ministry, yet not fully consummatedReuse baseline ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ + ಸಮೀಪಿಸು (samīpisu, “draw near”). High risk: must hold together already/not-yet without collapsing into either a purely future political hope or a purely inward, already-fully-realized mystical state (cf. ch.17 ἐντός caution below).
Satan fall like lightningΣατανᾶν ὡς ἀστραπὴν πεσόνταCosmic-scale spiritual victory accompanying the disciples’ mission (10:18)ಸೈತಾನ. Low-Medium risk: personal defeated spiritual adversary, not a symbolic principle of evil.
written in heavenτὰ ὀνόματα ὑμῶν ἐγγέγραπται ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖςAssurance of salvation grounded in God’s own record, not the disciples’ spiritual powerಪರಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿರುವುದು. Medium risk: ties to Assurance of Salvation doctrine (baseline), grounded in God’s action, not human achievement.
eternal life (inherit)ζωὴ αἰώνιος / κληρονομέω”life without end” / “to inherit”Permanent resurrected life in God’s presence; inheritance as a legal/familial right”eternal life,” “inherit eternal life”The lawyer’s question (10:25) opens the Good Samaritan parableನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ (nityajīva) + ಬಾಧ್ಯಸ್ಥನಾಗು/ಸ್ವಾಸ್ತ್ಯ ಹೊಂದು (bādhyasthanāgu). High risk: ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ must be read as unending personal, relational life with God in resurrected bodily existence — never assimilated to mokṣa/mukti (release from the rebirth cycle into an impersonal absolute), extending the baseline’s Critical salvation caution. Ties also to baseline’s ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ (adoption/inheritance) theology.
neighborπλησίον / plēsion”the one nearby”Fellow human deserving of love, defined by the parable to include social/religious outsiders”neighbor”The parable radically redefines “neighbor” to include a hated outsider (a Samaritan) — direct challenge to any socially bounded definition of who deserves compassionನೆರೆಯವನು (nereyavanu). High risk: in the Karnataka context this maps directly onto the baseline’s Unity of Jews and Gentiles / caste-hierarchy caution — “neighbor” must be read as crossing every social, caste, and religious boundary, not limited to one’s own community or caste-group; theologian review recommended given the parable’s direct challenge to socially bounded ethics.
SamaritanΣαμαρίτης / Samaritēsproper/ethnic nameMember of a people despised by Jews of Jesus’ day for mixed ancestry and rival worship”Samaritan”The parable’s hero is precisely the person the original hearers would least expect to show mercy — Luke’s recurring instrument for teaching boundary-crossing compassion (also 9:52-56; 17:11-19)ಸಮಾರ್ಯದವನು (Samāryadavanu). Medium-High risk: requires background explanation (no OT-literacy assumption per baseline tone rules) so the shock value is not lost; functions as a live cultural bridge to caste-crossing compassion.
Father, Lord of heaven and earthΠάτερ, κύριε τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆςJesus’ prayer of praise (10:21)Reuse baseline ತಂದೆ + ಕರ್ತ.
good portionτὴν ἀγαθὴν μερίδα / tēn agathēn merida”the good part/share”Mary’s choice to sit and listen to Jesus, commended over Martha’s anxious service”the good portion,” “what is better”Prioritizing attentive relationship with Jesus (hearing his word) over anxious activity — feeds the “Prayer and Dependence on God” doctrineಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಪಾಲು (oḷḷeya pālu). Low-Medium risk.

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
Father, hallowed be your nameΠάτερ, ἁγιασθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σουLuke’s version of the Lord’s Prayer — central “Prayer and Dependence on God” textReuse baseline ತಂದೆ + ಪವಿತ್ರ (ಪವಿತ್ರವಾಗಲಿ ನಿನ್ನ ನಾಮ). Critical/High: must render consistently with any future Matthew-curriculum package; theologian review recommended given its constant liturgical use.
ask, seek, knockαἰτεῖτε, ζητεῖτε, κρούετε“ask… seek… knock”Persistent, confident prayer to a generous Father, who gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask (11:13)ಕೇಳಿರಿ, ಹುಡುಕಿರಿ, ತಟ್ಟಿರಿ. Medium risk: standard vocabulary; ensure it reads as confident child-to-Father request (cf. ಅಬ್ಬಾ/ತಂದೆ baseline), not a transactional bargaining prayer common to some devotional vow-making (harake) practices at Karnataka shrines, where a vow/offering is promised in exchange for a favor granted.
Holy Spirit (given to those who ask)πνεῦμα ἅγιονThe Father’s supreme gift, greater than any earthly good gift (11:13)Reuse baseline ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, Critical.
finger of Godδάκτυλος θεοῦ”finger of God”Idiom for direct divine power/action (Exodus 8:19 echo)“finger of God”Jesus casts out demons “by the finger of God,” proving the kingdom’s arrival (11:20)ದೇವರ ಬೆರಳು — idiom; render literally with contextual explanation since the imagery (unlike some idioms) is transparent and theologically loaded (evokes Exodus). Medium risk.
sign of Jonahτὸ σημεῖον ἸωνᾶPoints forward to Jesus’ death/resurrection as the ultimate authenticating signRequires OT (Jonah) background explanation given assumed low narrative literacy; Low-Medium risk if properly annotated.
woes on Pharisees/lawyersοὐαίDenunciation of external religiosity that neglects justice and love of God (11:39-52)Reuse ch.6 ಅಯ್ಯೋ. Medium-High risk: must not read as generic anti-clericalism but as a specific critique of substituting ritual precision for justice, mercy, and love of God — a caution equally applicable across religious traditions and worth careful, non-polemical framing given interfaith sensitivities already flagged in the baseline’s Evangelism doctrine note.

Chapter 12 — Fear God Not Man, Rich Fool, Watchfulness, Division Not Peace

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
blasphemy against the Holy Spiritβλασφημία εἰς τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιονThe one unforgivable sin (12:10) — a Critical doctrinal statement requiring careful, non-sensationalized handlingReuse baseline ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ + ದೂಷಣೆ (dūṣaṇe, blasphemy/slander). Critical risk: theologian review required; must not be reduced to a vague “unforgivable sin” formula detached from its specific referent (willful, settled rejection of the Spirit’s testimony to Christ).
rich foolἄφρων / aphrōn”senseless, foolish”Moral/spiritual folly, not mere intellectual deficiency”fool”Parable warning against trusting accumulated wealth instead of God (12:16-21)ಮೂರ್ಖ (mūrkha). Low-Medium risk. Reinforces “rich/poor” reversal theology.
treasure in heavenθησαυρὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖςRight use of possessions redirected toward eternal, God-ward valueಪರಲೋಕದ ಸಂಪತ್ತು (paralōkada sampattu). Low-Medium risk.
division not peaceδιαμερισμόν, οὐκ εἰρήνηνJesus’ mission will provoke conflict, even within families — a hard corrective to any simplistic “peace at all costs” reading of ಶಾಂತಿReuse baseline ಶಾಂತಿ, contrasted here; Medium risk: ensure the contrast is preserved, not softened.

repent or perishμετανοῆτε… ἀπολεῖσθεRepentance urgency tied directly to eternal consequence, not merely ethical improvement (13:3, 5)Reuse ch.3 ಮಾನಸಾಂತರ. High risk, same caution against ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ (ritual-atonement) misreading.
mustard seed / leaven (kingdom parables)κόκκος σινάπεως / ζύμηThe kingdom’s small, hidden beginning and pervasive eventual growth — supports “Kingdom Present and Future” doctrineReuse baseline ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ + ಸಾಸಿವೆ ಕಾಳು/ಹುಳಿ (standard parabolic vocabulary). Low-Medium risk.
narrow doorστενῆς θύραςUrgency and exclusivity of entering the kingdom; not automatic or universal in the sense of guaranteed inclusion regardless of responseಇಕ್ಕಟ್ಟಾದ ಬಾಗಿಲು. Medium risk: preserve real urgency without contradicting the curriculum’s universal-invitation doctrine — the invitation is universal in scope (all nations/peoples) but response is not automatic.
first/last reversalἔσχατοι/πρῶτοι“Some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last” (13:30) — Luke’s reversal motif againಕಡೆಯವರು/ಮೊದಲಿಗರು. Low-Medium risk.

invite the poor, crippled, lame, blindκάλει πτωχούς, ἀναπείρους, χωλούς, τυφλούςTable-fellowship instruction reversing normal social-reciprocity banquet customs — direct application of “Good News to the Poor” doctrine to communal practiceReuse ch.4 ಬಡವರು + standard terms for disabled persons (ಅಂಗವಿಕಲರು, ಕುಂಟರು, ಕುರುಡರು). High risk: the point is precisely that such guests cannot repay the host — this must not be softened into generic charity language that misses the specific reversal-of-reciprocity logic Jesus is teaching, which bears directly on caste/status-based hospitality norms.
great banquet parableδεῖπνον μέγαUniversal invitation extended to those first invited (who refuse) and then to “the poor, crippled, blind, lame,” and finally to those on “the roads and hedges” — total inclusivityStandard narrative vocabulary; ties to Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrine (baseline). Medium-High risk: preserve the parable’s climactic universality without narrowing it culturally.
cost of discipleship (hate father/mother, carry cross, count the cost)μισεῖ τὸν πατέρα… βαστάζει τὸν σταυρὸν ἑαυτοῦ… ψηφίζει τὴν δαπάνην”hate,” “carry,” “calculate the cost”Hyperbolic total-priority language (Semitic idiom for relative priority, not literal hatred); full, weighed commitment”hate,” “carry his cross,” “count the cost”Luke’s sharpest discipleship-cost teaching — total allegiance to Jesus above every other relationship or possessionಶಿಷ್ಯತ್ವದ ಬೆಲೆ (śiṣyatvada bele, “the cost of discipleship”). High risk: “hate” (μισεῖ) is a Semitic idiom of comparative priority (“love less by comparison”), and a literal Kannada rendering (ದ್ವೇಷಿಸು, “to hate/despise”) risks either sounding like a call to literal family-hatred or being softened away entirely; requires an idiom-handling translator note per the baseline’s idiom rule, preserving the theological force (Christ’s claim is absolute) without producing a false literal command.
salt losing saltinessἅλας… μωρανθῇWarning against discipleship that loses its distinctive characterಉಪ್ಪು ರುಚಿ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡರೆ. Low risk.

eat with sinnersσυνεσθίει αὐτοῖς / synesthiei autois”eats together with them”Shared table, implying acceptance, intimacy, and (in the Jewish social context) ritual/social risk”eats with them,” “welcomes and eats with”The Pharisees’ complaint that opens the three lost-and-found parables — Luke’s central “Compassion and Table Fellowship” doctrine textಜೊತೆ ಊಟಮಾಡುವುದು (jote ūṭamāḍuvudu). High risk, grounded: shared eating across social/purity/status boundaries is a live, high-stakes marker in Indian society generally and Karnataka specifically, where caste-conditioned commensality rules (who may cook for, serve, or dine with whom) remain culturally significant despite legal reform. Jesus’ table fellowship with “sinners” is a direct, deliberate boundary-crossing act; translators and teachers must not soften this into generic hospitality but must let the full social scandal register, while framing it as an invitation, not a confrontation, per the baseline’s evangelism-tone guidance.
repent(s)/repentance (joy over one sinner)μετανοοῦντι / metanoounti“There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents” (15:7, 10)Reuse ch.3 ಮಾನಸಾಂತರ + ಸಂತೋಷ (see ch.2 joy caution: prefer ಸಂತೋಷ over ಆನಂದ). High risk.
lost and foundἀπολωλὸς … εὑρέθη”lost… was found”Central Lukan salvation metaphor across all three ch.15 parables and 19:10”lost,” “found”The defining shape of Luke’s whole soteriology: God actively seeks out and rejoices over the recovery of the lostಕಳೆದುಹೋದದ್ದು … ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು (kaḷedu hōdaddu… sikkitu). Medium-High risk: keep the active, seeking initiative on God’s side (the shepherd/woman/father actively search or wait and run) rather than a passive discovery — supports the baseline’s Grace doctrine (unmerited, initiated by God, not the sinner’s own effort or spiritual attainment).
dead and alive againνεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἀνέζησεν“was dead, and is alive again”The father’s words over the returning prodigal (15:24, 32) — figurative “resurrection” language for restoration to relationshipಸತ್ತಿದ್ದನು, ಈಗ ಬದುಕಿದ್ದಾನೆ. Medium risk: keep distinct from the literal, bodily reuse baseline Critical term ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ (resurrection); this is figurative restoration-to-relationship language, and a footnote may be useful to prevent confusion between the two.

Medium risk: retain the personified “rival master” force, not merely “money” as a neutral object.
Hadesᾅδης / hadēsGreek underworld term, used in LXX/NT for the realm of the deadPlace of the dead; in this parable specifically a place of conscious torment for the unrighteous rich man”Hades,” “hell”Rich man and Lazarus (16:19-31) — conscious, ongoing post-mortem experience, not annihilation or transmigrationಪಾತಾಳ/ನರಕ (pātāḷa/naraka). Critical risk, grounded: ನರಕ in mainstream Hindu cosmology denotes one of several temporary hells where accumulated bad karma is worked off before the soul’s next rebirth — a purificatory, time-limited stage within saṃsāra. Luke 16 depicts a fixed, conscious, unbridgeable state (“a great chasm has been fixed,” 16:26), not a temporary karmic purification preceding further rebirth. Theologian review required; a translator note distinguishing the two cosmologies is essential.
Abraham’s bosomκόλπος ἈβραάμRestful blessedness with the patriarch after death, contrasted with Hadesಅಬ್ರಹಾಮನ ಎದೆ/ಮಡಿಲು. Medium risk, requires OT patriarchal-background note.

ten lepers / one returnsλεπροὶ δέκα / ὑπέστρεψεν… ΣαμαρίτηςThe one who returns to give thanks is, pointedly, a Samaritan — reinforcing the “faith over ethnicity” theme first raised with the centurion (ch.7)Reuse ch.5/ch.10 ಕುಷ್ಠರೋಗಿ + ಸಮಾರ್ಯದವನು. High risk given direct thematic tie to Savior-for-all-nations doctrine.
your faith has made you wellἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σεFormula recurs (17:19)Reuse ch.7 formula.
kingdom of God within/among youἐντὸς ὑμῶν / entos hymōn”within/inside you” or “in your midst/among you” (both grammatically possible)Contested phrase: (a) an inward, individual spiritual reality, or (b) the kingdom’s presence “in your midst” through Jesus himself, standing among his questioners”within you,” “among you,” “in your midst”Answers Pharisees asking when the kingdom would come — Jesus redirects from external observation to a present reality already breaking in through his own presenceCRITICAL RISK, grounded and Karnataka-specific: rendering this “ನಿಮ್ಮ ಒಳಗೆ” (within you, inside your own being) risks direct assimilation to two live Karnataka frameworks — (1) the Vīraśaiva/Liṅgāyat theology of the iṣṭaliṅga worn on the body as Śiva indwelling the devotee, and (2) the Vedantic antaryāmin/ātman doctrine of the divine Self already present within every person, requiring only inward realization rather than a Person to be trusted and received. Given that Jesus is addressing hostile Pharisees (unlikely referents of an indwelling kingdom), and Luke’s own emphasis elsewhere on the kingdom present in Jesus’ external, historical activity (11:20 “the kingdom of God has come upon you”), ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ (“in your midst/among you”) is the doctrinally safer rendering. Mandatory theologian review; translator note required regardless of final choice.
days of the Son of Man (like Noah/Lot)αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπουSudden, unanticipated eschatological returnReuse ch.5 ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರ, Critical.

Chapter 18 — Persistent Widow, Pharisee and Tax Collector, Children, Rich Ruler, Blind Beggar

God’s electοἱ ἐκλεκτοὶ αὐτοῦ“Will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night?” (18:7)Reuse baseline ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ-related vocabulary (ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾದವರು). High risk per baseline election doctrine.
justifiedδεδικαιωμένος / dedikaiōmenos (perf. pass. ptc. of δικαιόω)“having been declared righteous”Forensic legal declaration, not moral self-improvement”justified,” “went home right with God”The tax collector’s humble plea for mercy — not the Pharisee’s self-listed merits — results in God’s forensic declaration of righteousness (18:14)MANDATORY reuse baseline exact phrase: ನೀತಿವಂತರೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಣಯಿಸುವುದು. Critical risk — one of Luke’s clearest justification-by-grace-not-merit texts, directly reinforcing the baseline’s Critical caution against ಧರ್ಮ/ಸ್ವಂತ ಸಾಧನೆಯ ನೀತಿ (self-attained righteousness, explicitly including the Liṅgāyat śatsthala framework already flagged). Theologian review mandatory.
kingdom belongs to such as these (children)τῶν γὰρ τοιούτων ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦChildlike, dependent receptivity as the model posture for receiving the kingdomReuse baseline ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ. Medium risk.
with man impossible, with God possibleτὰ ἀδύνατα παρὰ ἀνθρώποις δυνατὰ παρὰ τῷ θεῷ ἐστινSalvation is God’s sovereign gracious act, not a human achievement (responding to “who then can be saved?”)Ties directly to reuse baseline ರಕ್ಷಣೆ + ಕೃಪೆ; High-Critical risk, key grace-not-merit text alongside 18:14.
Son of Davidυἱὸς ΔαυίδThe blind beggar’s messianic confession (18:38-39)Reuse baseline ದಾವೀದ + Messianic vocabulary. Medium-High risk.

Chapter 19 — Zacchaeus, Ten Minas, Triumphal Entry, Weeping over Jerusalem, Temple Cleansing

seek and save the lostζητῆσαι καὶ σῶσαι τὸ ἀπολωλόςLuke’s summary mission-statement for Jesus (19:10), echoing ch.15’s lost-and-found theology and answering 4:18’s programmatic announcementReuse baseline ರಕ್ಷಣೆ (verb ರಕ್ಷಿಸು) + reuse ch.15 ಕಳೆದುಹೋದ. High risk: this verse functions as Luke’s own thesis-statement alongside 4:18-21; render with the same consistency care the baseline requires for Romans 1:16-17.
salvation has come to this houseσήμερον σωτηρία τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ ἐγένετοEchoes the emphatic “today” (Σήμερον) of 4:21 and 2:11 — Lukan pattern of present-tense, historically located salvationReuse baseline ρಕ್ಷಣೆ + reuse core-passage ಇಂದು (today). Critical/High risk: preserve the “today” emphasis consistent with 4:21 and 23:43.
blessed is the king who comesεὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ὁ βασιλεύςTriumphal entry acclamation — royal, messianic, but immediately followed by Jesus’ weeping over Jerusalem’s coming judgment, not triumphalist celebrationಧನ್ಯನು ಬರುವ ಅರಸನು. Medium risk.
house of prayer / den of robbersοἶκος προσευχῆς / σπήλαιον λῃστῶνTemple cleansing — worship corrupted into commercial/nationalistic exploitationಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನಾ ಮಂದಿರ / ಕಳ್ಳರ ಗವಿ. Low-Medium risk.

Chapter 20 — Authority Question, Wicked Tenants, Caesar, Resurrection Debate, David’s Son/Lord

sons of the resurrectionυἱοὶ… τῆς ἀναστάσεωςDebate with Sadducees; the resurrected state is categorically different from present earthly life/marriage (20:34-36)Reuse baseline ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ, Critical — theologian review required given Sadducee-context nuance (bodily resurrection affirmed against denial, not reincarnation).
God of the livingθεὸς… ζώντωνAbraham, Isaac, Jacob “live to him” — resurrection hope grounded in God’s own faithful characterReuse baseline ದೇವರು. Medium-High risk: reinforces that the dead in Christ remain personally alive to God, not dissolved or reincarnated.
David’s son and LordΔαυὶδ υἱός… κύριονChristological riddle: Messiah is both David’s descendant and David’s Lord — points to Christ’s divine-human identityReuse baseline ದಾವೀದ + ಕರ್ತ, both Critical/High.

times of the Gentilesκαιροὶ ἐθνῶνThe period of Jerusalem’s subjugation and Gentile mission preceding final consummationReuse baseline ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು + ಕಾಲ (kāla, time/era). Medium risk.
Son of Man coming in a cloudὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐν νεφέλῃFuture, visible, glorious return — the “Kingdom… Future” pole of the present/future kingdom tensionReuse ch.5 ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರ, Critical.
your redemption draws nearἐγγίζει ἡ ἀπολύτρωσις ὑμῶνFinal, consummated deliverance, distinct from but continuous with the redemption already announced in ch.1 (λύτρωσις)Reuse ch.1 ವಿಮೋಚನೆ. High risk, same caution against mokṣa-adjacent readings.

Chapter 22 — Last Supper, New Covenant, Gethsemane, Betrayal, Trial

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
this is my body given for youτοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν διδόμενονInstitution of the Lord’s Supper — Jesus’ self-giving, substitutionary death anticipated in a shared mealದೇಹ (dēha) / ಈ ದೇಹ ನಿಮಗಾಗಿ ಕೊಡಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ. High risk: must be clearly distinguished from ಪ್ರಸಾದ (prasāda), the Hindu temple practice of consuming food first ritually offered to and blessed by a deity, understood to transmit divine grace/blessing through the substance itself. The Lord’s Supper is a proclamation-memorial of a completed, unrepeatable atoning death, not a means of ongoing merit or blessing-transfer through consumed sacred substance; theologian review required.
new covenant in my bloodἡ καινὴ διαθήκη ἐν τῷ αἵματί μουThe New Covenant, fulfilling and superseding the Mosaic covenant, sealed in Christ’s atoning bloodReuse baseline ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ + ಹೊಸ (hosa, “new”) + ರಕ್ತ (rakta, “blood”): ನನ್ನ ರಕ್ತದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸ ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ. Critical risk: must not read as merely a renewed transaction/contract (baseline already rejects ಒಪ್ಪಂದ for covenant); this is the climactic, blood-sealed fulfillment of all prior covenant promise.
not my will but yoursμὴ τὸ θέλημά μου ἀλλὰ τὸ σὸν γινέσθωGethsemane prayer — perfect model of dependent, submissive prayer under extreme sufferingTies to “Prayer and Dependence on God” doctrine. ನನ್ನ ಚಿತ್ತವಲ್ಲ, ನಿನ್ನ ಚಿತ್ತವೇ ಆಗಲಿ. Medium-High risk: convey trusting submission to a personal Father’s will, not fatalistic resignation (ಹಣೆಬರಹ) nor detached acceptance of impersonal cosmic order.
Son of Man seated at the right handὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενος ἐκ δεξιῶνJesus’ own testimony before the Sanhedrin, provoking the “are you the Son of God” chargeReuse ch.5 & baseline ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರ + ದೇವರ ಮಗ, both Critical.

Chapter 23 — Trial, Crucifixion, Paradise, Death, Burial

TermOriginal/Translit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningKannada Rendering & Risk
Father, forgive themΠάτερ, ἄφες αὐτοῖςJesus’ own prayer of forgiveness from the cross — the ultimate model of the forgiveness he taughtReuse ತಂದೆ + ಕ್ಷಮೆ. High risk (climactic forgiveness text).
today you will be with me in Paradiseσήμερον μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳImmediate, conscious, personal presence with Christ after death, granted to a repentant criminal by grace alone, apart from any merit or religious performanceಇಂದು (reuse core-passage “today”) + ಪರದೈಸು (paradaisu, transliterated) / ಸ್ವರ್ಗ. CRITICAL RISK, grounded: avoid ಸ್ವರ್ಗ (svarga) as the primary rendering, since in mainstream Hindu cosmology svarga is a temporary heavenly abode of sensory enjoyment earned by accumulated puṇya (merit), from which the soul eventually returns to the rebirth cycle once that merit is exhausted. The dying criminal has performed no meritorious religious act — only turned in trust to Jesus in his last moments — and is promised immediate, permanent, personal presence with Christ. Prefer the transliteration ಪರದೈಸು with a clarifying note, reserving ಸ್ವರ್ಗ (if used at all) for careful, footnoted use. Theologian review mandatory; this is one of the clearest possible statements of the curriculum’s grace doctrine.
Father, into your hands I commit my spiritΠάτερ, εἰς χεῖράς σου παρατίθεμαι τὸ πνεῦμά μουJesus’ final words — trustful self-giving to the Father, not passive fatalismಒಪ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ (oppisuttēne, “I entrust/commit”). Medium-High risk: convey confident, relational trust in a personal Father, distinct from resigned submission to impersonal fate.
certainly this man was innocentὄντως ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦνThe centurion’s (a Gentile’s) confession — another Gentile faith-witness bracketing the Gospel (cf. ch.7)Builds on reuse baseline ನೀತಿ (righteous/innocent) root. Medium risk.

why do you seek the living among the deadτί ζητεῖτε τὸν ζῶντα μετὰ τῶν νεκρῶνThe empty tomb’s own theological interpretation, delivered by angelic messengersಜೀವಿಸುವಾತನನ್ನು ಸತ್ತವರಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕೆ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತೀರಿ. Ties directly to reuse baseline ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ, Critical.
was it not necessary that Christ should suffer… and enter his gloryοὐχὶ ταῦτα ἔδει παθεῖν τὸν χριστὸν καὶ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦDivine necessity (δεῖ, cf. ch.4) governing the whole passion-resurrection pattern, retrospectively read from all of ScriptureReuse ch.4 ಅಗತ್ಯ/ಬೇಕು + reuse baseline ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯ/ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ + ಮಹಿಮೆ. Critical/High risk: same providence caution as ch.4/8:28 (must not read as fatalistic ಹಣೆಬರಹ, but as the fulfillment of God’s own prophetic word).
opened their minds to understand the Scripturesδιήνοιξεν αὐτῶν τὸν νοῦν τοῦ συνιέναι τὰς γραφάςDivine, Spirit-given illumination needed to correctly read Scripture — not human cleverness or mystical insight aloneಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ತೆರೆದನು (manassannu teredanu). Medium-High risk: avoid language suggestive of an awakening of latent inner knowledge/consciousness (a jñāna-mārga or kuṇḍalinī-awakening framing); this is a gift of understanding given from outside the hearer, by Christ himself.
repentance and forgiveness of sins… to all nationsμετάνοιαν εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνηThe Great Commission’s precise content in Luke — repentance-forgiveness (the exact term-pair from 3:3 and 4:18) now extended explicitly to all nations, tying the whole Gospel’s structure together at its closeReuse ch.3 & core passage: ಮಾನಸಾಂತರ + ಪಾಪ ಕ್ಷಮೆ + reuse baseline ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು. Critical risk: this is the Gospel’s own summary thesis-statement (paralleling 4:18-21 and 19:10); mandatory theologian review and mandatory consistency with all prior occurrences of both terms.
clothed with power from on highἐνδύσησθε ἐξ ὕψους δύναμινPromise of the Spirit’s empowerment for the mission about to begin (fulfilled at Pentecost, Acts 2)Reuse baseline ದೇವರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ — never ಶಕ್ತಿ (baseline forbidden substitution, especially salient here given the phrase’s superficial resemblance to a Śakti-descent/empowerment idiom from Karnataka’s prominent Chamundeshwari Śākta tradition already flagged in the baseline). Critical risk; theologian review required.
ascensionἀνεφέρετο εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν / anephereto”was carried up”Christ’s bodily, historical, once-for-all exaltation to the Father”was carried up into heaven,” “ascended”The Gospel’s climactic conclusion — Jesus’ bodily return to the Father’s glory, distinct from any figure’s spiritual ascentಆರೋಹಣ (ārōhaṇa) / ಪರಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಒಯ್ಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟನು. High risk: ಆರೋಹಣ can also describe a yogi’s or mystic’s spiritual ascent of consciousness (e.g., kuṇḍalinī ascent through the chakras) in some Karnataka devotional and yogic traditions; must be anchored as Christ’s unique, bodily, historical exaltation — not a repeatable mystical or meditative attainment available to any sufficiently advanced devotee.
worshiped himπροσεκύνησαν αὐτόν / prosekynēsan”did obeisance to, worshiped”Physical prostration/homage; ranges from respectful human greeting to exclusive divine worship depending on object and context”worshiped,” “fell down before”The disciples’ final response to the risen and ascending Christ — exclusive divine worship, appropriate only because of who he has been shown to beಆರಾಧಿಸಿದರು (ārādhisidaru). High risk: prefer ಆರಾಧಿಸು over ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸು/ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ, since ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ functions in everyday Kannada as a generic respectful greeting/gesture offered to elders, deities, and revered teachers alike, and would understate the text’s claim of unique, exclusive worship due to Christ as God.
great joyχαρᾶς μεγάληςThe Gospel’s final emotional note, in the temple, blessing GodReuse ch.2 ಸಂತೋಷ (not ಆನಂದ). Medium risk, bookends the Gospel with the same joy vocabulary as 2:10.

Summary Observations for Phase 2 Planning

  1. The core passage (4:16-21) functions as Luke’s own thesis statement and recurs verbally throughout the book (7:22 “poor have good news”; 19:9-10 “today… salvation… seek and save the lost”; 24:47 “repentance and forgiveness of sins… to all nations”). All these echo-passages must be rendered with lexical consistency to 4:16-21, per the Theological Consistency Rules inherited from the Romans baseline (which already mandates identical rendering of Romans 1:16-17 and 8:28 across documents).
  2. Three genuinely new Critical-risk collision zones emerge in Luke beyond the Romans baseline’s list: (a) ಅಭಿಷೇಕ/anointing vs. Śaiva ritual abhiṣeka; (b) ಸ್ವರ್ಗ/ನರಕ (paradise/Hades) vs. temporary karma-purification cosmology; (c) ಎಂಟೋಸ್/“kingdom within you” (17:21) vs. Liṅgāyat iṣṭaliṅga-indwelling and Vedantic antaryāmin theology. All three require mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
  3. Coastal Karnataka’s Bhūta Kōla spirit-worship tradition is a newly identified, Luke-specific syncretism risk (frequent exorcism narratives) not present in Romans’ epistolary material — flagged wherever δαιμόνιον/πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον occurs.
  4. Caste-conditioned commensality is a newly identified, Luke-specific cultural collision (table-fellowship material: chs. 5, 7, 14, 15, 19) not present in Romans in the same concrete, narrative form — flagged as High risk throughout.
  5. No chapter of Luke was found to introduce zero new theological vocabulary; every chapter above records at least one load-bearing term, consistent with the density of Luke’s narrative-parabolic material.

This document must be loaded alongside the Romans baseline package (not in place of it) before Phase 2 translation of any Luke segment begins.
