Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: 1 Timothy 1–6 (English → Kannada)
1. Purpose and Method
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the 1 Timothy curriculum, chapter by chapter and consolidated, in a form consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json. It exists to give Phase 2 translators and reviewers a single reference showing:
- which doctrines are active in which chapters and verses,
- the risk tier governing each,
- the specific translation risk (syncretism vector, lexical collision, or exegetical crux) that risk tier is protecting against, and
- the review routing that risk tier triggers.
No doctrine, risk tier, or routing decision here contradicts the doctrine_risk_registry.json; this document is its narrative and chapter-organized companion.
2. Chapter-by-Chapter Walkthrough (Full Book Coverage)
Chapter 1 (1:1–20) — Salutation, the Charge against False Teachers, Paul’s Testimony
Establishes Savior/mediator vocabulary continued through the letter. → Salvation, Deity and Lordship of Christ (introductory).
- 1:3–11 — Charge against teaching a different doctrine (ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω), myths and genealogies, contrasted with ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ (“sound/healthy doctrine”) and the proper, non-meritorious use of ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ (the Law). → Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching; Right Use of the Law.
- 1:12–17 — Paul’s testimony: “formerly a blasphemer… but I received ಕರುಣೆ,” the “foremost of sinners” saved by ಕೃಪೆ, and the doxology to the “King eternal, immortal (ಅಮರತ್ವ echo), invisible, the only God.” → Grace and Mercy toward Sinners; Salvation; Deity and Lordship of Christ (doxological anticipation of 6:15–16).
- 1:18–20 — “Wage the good warfare,” holding faith (ನಂಬಿಕೆ) and a good conscience (ಮನಸ್ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ); Hymenaeus and Alexander “handed over to ಸೈತಾನ.” → Guarding the Deposit of Faith; Spiritual Warfare and Demonic Deception.
Chapter 2 (2:1–15) — Public Worship, the One Mediator, Women in Worship
- 2:1–8 — Fourfold prayer vocabulary (ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ / ವಿನಂತಿ / ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ / ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ), prayer for rulers, God’s universal salvific will (“desires all people to be saved”), the ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ (one Mediator) and ವಿಮೋಚನಾ ಕ್ರಯ (ransom) — “the man Christ Jesus.” → Public Worship and Prayer; Christ as the One Mediator; Salvation; Incarnation and the Humanity of Christ.
- 2:9–15 — Women’s dress/modesty (ಲಜ್ಜೆ), the teaching/authority crux (αὐθεντέω → ಅಧಿಕಾರ ನಡೆಸು), and 2:15’s “saved through childbearing” exegetical crux. → Women’s Conduct in Worship and Teaching; Salvation (childbearing crux specifically flagged).
Chapter 3 (3:1–16) — CORE PASSAGE: Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons; the Church as Pillar of Truth
- 3:1–7 — Qualifications for ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ (overseer/bishop): above reproach, one-wife husband, self-controlled, hospitable, able to teach, not a lover of money, managing his own household well, not a recent convert (guarding against ಅಹಂಕಾರ / pride and the “snare of the devil”). → Qualifications for Church Leadership; Household Order and Family Ethics; Spiritual Warfare and Demonic Deception (3:6–7).
- 3:8–13 — Qualifications for ಸಭಾಸೇವಕ (deacons) and their wives/women-deacons: dignity (ಘನತೆ), not double-tongued, not greedy, holding “the mystery of the faith” with a clear conscience; tested first; “those who serve well gain a good standing (ಸ್ಥಾನಮಾನ) and great boldness (ಧೈರ್ಯ) in the faith.” → Qualifications for Church Leadership; Guarding the Deposit of Faith (3:9’s “mystery of the faith”); Assurance and Confidence in Ministry (3:13).
- 3:14–16 — “How one ought to behave in the household (ಮನೆ) of God, which is the church (ಸಭೆ) of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth (ಸತ್ಯದ ಸ್ತಂಭವೂ ಆಧಾರವೂ).” The “mystery of godliness” (ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಮರ್ಮ) hymn: manifested in the flesh (ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ), vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory (ಮಹಿಮೆ). → The Church as Pillar of Truth; Godliness and Contentment; Incarnation and the Humanity of Christ; Deity and Lordship of Christ.
Chapter 4 (4:1–16) — False Asceticism, Godliness in Training, Timothy’s Ministry
- 4:1–5 — “The Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of ದೆವ್ವಗಳು (demons),” forbidding marriage and foods God created good; “everything created by God is good… received with ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ.” → Spiritual Warfare and Demonic Deception; False Asceticism and the Goodness of Creation; Thanksgiving and Gratitude.
- 4:6–10 — Being “nourished on the words of the faith and of the ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ,” training oneself for ಭಕ್ತಿ (godliness) versus bodily training, hope set on “the living God, who is the ರಕ್ಷಕ of all people, especially of those who believe.” → Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching; Godliness and Contentment; Salvation.
- 4:11–16 — Timothy’s example, the ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ವರ (spiritual gift) given through prophecy with the ಕೈ ಇಡುವಿಕೆ (laying on of hands) of the ಹಿರಿಯರ ಮಂಡಳಿ (council of elders); “keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching… you will save both yourself and your hearers.” → Qualifications for Church Leadership (ordination practice); Salvation (ministerial-perseverance sense, distinct nuance from 2:15/1:15, low incremental risk beyond existing salvation tier).
Chapter 5 (5:1–25) — Generational Respect, Widows, Elders, Church Discipline
- 5:1–2 — Rebuking an older man (ಹಿರಿಯ, age-sense) gently, treating older/younger women as mothers/sisters “in all purity.” → Respect across Generations in the Church (explicitly disambiguated from the office-sense of πρεσβύτερος).
- 5:3–16 — “Honor (ಗೌರವ) widows (ವಿಧವೆ) who are truly widows”; family duty to care for widowed relatives first (“household of faith,” ಮನೆ); qualifications for the enrolled-widow list; younger widows encouraged to remarry; the church’s obligation not to be burdened so it can care for “true widows.” → Care for Widows and the Household of Faith; Household Order and Family Ethics.
- 5:17–22 — Elders (ಹಿರಿಯರು, office-sense) who rule well are worthy of double ಗೌರವ (honor, including material support); accusations against an elder require two or three witnesses; public rebuke of persistent sinners; solemn charge to observe these rules “without prejudging, doing nothing from ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತ (partiality)”; caution against hasty ordination (ಕೈ ಇಡುವಿಕೆ). → Elder Accountability and Church Discipline; Qualifications for Church Leadership.
- 5:23–25 — Personal counsel on wine for Timothy’s health; sins/good works evident or not. → Reviewed; no new doctrine beyond Universal Human Accountability (baseline ಪಾಪ term, already governed by the Romans baseline risk tier — reused, not re-tiered here).
Chapter 6 (6:1–21) — Slavery, False Teaching, Riches, the Closing Charge
- 6:1–2 — Bondservants (ಗುಲಾಮ, literal slavery — never ದಾಸ) under the yoke are to honor their masters (ಒಡೆಯ) so that God’s name and the ಬೋಧನೆ (teaching) are not reviled; believing masters not to be treated with disrespect but served “since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.” → Slavery and Social Ethics within the Household of Faith.
- 6:3–5 — Whoever teaches a different doctrine (ಬೇರೆ ಬೋಧನೆ) and does not agree with the ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ and the ಭಕ್ತಿ (godliness) it produces is “puffed up with conceit,” morbidly obsessed with controversy, imagining ಭಕ್ತಿ is a means of gain. → Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching; Godliness and Contentment.
- 6:6–10 — “ಭಕ್ತಿ with ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ (contentment) is great gain”; “we brought nothing into the world”; “the ಲೋಭ/ಹಣದಾಸೆ (love of money) is a root of all kinds of evils.” → Godliness and Contentment; The Danger of Riches and Love of Money.
- 6:11–16 — Charge to Timothy, “man of God,” to pursue righteousness (ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ), godliness (ಭಕ್ತಿ), faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness; “fight the good fight of the faith… make the good ಅರಿಕೆ (confession)”; the closing doxology to “the blessed and only ಅಧಿಪತಿ (Sovereign), the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has ಅಮರತ್ವ (immortality)… to whom be honor and eternal dominion.” Christ’s ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆ (appearing). → Assurance and Confidence in Ministry; Deity and Lordship of Christ; Eschatological Hope and Christ’s Appearing.
- 6:17–21 — Charge to the rich not to be haughty or to set hopes on wealth but on God, to be generous (ಔದಾರ್ಯ) and ready to share; final charge to guard “the ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲಾದ ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪ (the deposit),” avoiding the irreverent babble and “ಸುಳ್ಳಾಗಿ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಎಂದೆನಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದು (falsely called knowledge).” → Generosity and Good Works; Guarding the Deposit of Faith.
Coverage confirmation: all 6 chapters and 113 verses of 1 Timothy have been reviewed above. No chapter or section was silently omitted; 5:23–25 is the one passage noted as contributing no doctrine beyond the already-registered baseline Universal Human Accountability category.
3. Full Doctrine Matrix
This matrix is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json: same 25 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. Passage lists here are the exhaustive book-wide passage sets (a superset of each registry entry’s “primary_passages” where the doctrine recurs across the letter).
| # | Doctrine | Supporting Passages (1 Timothy) | Risk Level | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching | 1:3-11; 1:19-20; 4:1-7; 6:3-5; 6:20-21 | Critical | ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ’s medical “healthy teaching” metaphor must be retained (never flattened to generic ಸರಿಯಾದ ಬೋಧನೆ), or the claim collapses into one more school’s assertion of correctness, indistinguishable from competing darśana claims to teach sad-vidyā. ಜ್ಞಾನ must never stand unqualified at 6:20 (collision with Advaita jñāna-mārga and Lingayat shatsthala knowledge-stages). | Human theologian |
| 2 | Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons) | 3:1-13 (core); 4:14; 5:17-22 | Critical | ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ/ಸಭಾಸೇವಕ must never collapse into a self-attained ಗುರು or itinerant ಜಂಗಮ teaching status. (3:13) lexically collides with the Lingayat shatsthala “six-step” ascent toward Aikya and must be taught as reputational esteem, not self-attained rank. ಕೈ ಇಡುವಿಕೆ (ordination) must not be read as guru-disciple dīkṣā transmission. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Christ as the One Mediator | 2:1-6; 4:10; 6:12-13 | Critical | ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ must exclude every rival Karnataka intermediary framework: purohita priest, guru, Lingayat jaṅgama, Haridasa guru-paramparā, coastal daiva/ancestor intermediaries. ವಿಮೋಚನಾ ಕ್ರಯ must never be rendered ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ, a self/priest-performed ritual expiation rather than Christ’s own substitutionary payment. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Public Worship and Prayer | 2:1-15 | High | Paul’s fourfold prayer vocabulary (ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ, ವಿನಂತಿ, ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ, ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ) must remain four distinct terms. ಲಜ್ಜೆ (modesty) must not be over-identified with restrictive caste-linked dress codes. The women’s teaching/authority question (ಅಧಿಕಾರ ನಡೆಸು) is a live interpretive crux requiring careful, non-resolving translation. | Human theologian |
| 5 | The Church as Pillar of Truth | 3:14-16 | Critical | The pillar-imagery evokes Karnataka’s own celebrated temple pillar-architecture (Hampi, Belur, Halebidu) and a philosophical darśana system’s foundational “pillars.” Must be taught as the church guarding and displaying already-revealed truth entrusted to it, not generating or progressively refining truth as in staged shatsthala revelation. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Godliness and Contentment | 3:16; 4:7-8; 6:3-11 | Critical | ಭಕ್ತಿ is retained by established Kannada Bible convention despite being the very word the Romans baseline rejected for πίστις (faith) due to strong Haridasa Krishna-bhakti and Lingayat devotional-surrender associations; every occurrence requires a translator note distinguishing reverent living flowing from grace-given faith from bhakti as devotional technique or merit-path toward Aikya. ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ must be distinguished from both Stoic self-sufficiency and ascetic vairāgya. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Care for Widows and the Household of Faith | 5:1-16 | High | ವಿಧವೆ must actively resist inherited Indian widow-stigma (restriction from auspicious occasions, remarriage prohibition, treatment as an inauspicious household burden). ಗೌರವ must carry both esteem and material provision, since the passage’s outworking is concrete financial care, not sentiment alone. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Guarding the Deposit of Faith | 1:18-19; 3:9; 6:20-21 | Critical | ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲಾದ ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪ must not be assimilated to guru-upadeśa esoteric private transmission; it names a publicly-proclaimed gospel entrusted to the whole church to guard together. ಜ್ಞಾನ must never appear unqualified given the collision with Vedantic jñāna-mārga. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Grace and Mercy toward Sinners | 1:12-17 | High | ಕರುಣೆ resonates with the pan-Indian ideal of karuṇā as an abstract cosmic-compassion virtue (prominent in Buddhist ethics); must be anchored as personal, particular divine compassion shown to Paul, “the foremost of sinners,” received apart from merit, not a generalized cosmic principle or karma-merit exchange. | Human theologian |
2:15’s “saved through childbearing” is an acute exegetical crux: ರಕ್ಷಣೆ must never be read as salvation earned through motherhood, which would contradict justification by faith and reinforce painful Indian son-preference/childbearing-worth cultural pressure on women. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Deity and Lordship of Christ | 1:17; 6:14-16 | Critical | The closing doxology’s “only Sovereign (ಅಧಿಪತಿ), King of kings” must retain exclusive supremacy, not read as one ranked deity within a pantheon’s hierarchy (e.g., Indra as king of the gods, or the trimūrti’s functional ranking). ಅಮರತ್ವ must be distinguished from the Vedantic teaching of an inherently immortal ātman: immortality here is God’s own underived nature, given to believers only as a gift. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Incarnation and the Humanity of Christ | 2:5; 3:16 | Critical | Reuse baseline ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ exactly; never ಅವತಾರ. “The man Christ Jesus” (2:5) reinforces full historical humanity underlying the one-mediator claim, distinguishing it from a temporary or repeatable avatar-style descent familiar from Udupi-centered Haridasa Krishna-bhakti expectation. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Right Use of the Law | 1:8-11 | High | ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ (never ಧರ್ಮ) is declared “good if used lawfully” to restrain the lawless, not as a path of merit; must not be conflated with dharma-based caste duty or self-effort discipline, a risk the Romans baseline already flags for this term. | Human theologian |
| 14 | False Asceticism and the Goodness of Creation | 4:1-5 | High | Condemns a specific false teaching that forbidding marriage or foods is spiritually required, not a blanket rejection of India’s own voluntary ascetic traditions (sannyāsa), fasting practices (vrata/ekādaśī), or vegetarianism, which retain dignity as personal disciplines when not taught as salvation-necessary requirements. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Spiritual Warfare and Demonic Deception | 1:20; 3:6-7; 4:1; 5:15 | High | ದೆವ್ವ (not ಭೂತ) must be used for δαιμόνιον to avoid collision with coastal Karnataka’s Bhūta Kōla/Daiva spirit-worship tradition, where bhūta/daiva spirits are honored and consulted as legitimate protective figures rather than uniformly regarded as evil. ಸೈತಾನ must stay distinct from Hindu asura/rākṣasa cosmology. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Household Order and Family Ethics | 3:4-5; 3:12; 5:4; 5:8 | High | ಮನೆ/ಮನೆವಾರ್ತೆ carries the letter’s key household-to-church analogy and must render identically across all occurrences (3:4-5, 3:12, 3:15, 5:4, 5:8); management must convey servant-oversight, not an autocratic caste-patriarchal domestic authority model. | Native speaker review |
| 17 | Women’s Conduct in Worship and Teaching | 2:9-15 | Critical | A live complementarian/egalitarian interpretive crux (αὐθεντέω, ಅಧಿಕಾರ ನಡೆಸು); translation must avoid both patriarchal-caste overreading and anachronistic egalitarian softening. 2:15’s ರಕ್ಷಣೆ-through-childbearing must not read as salvation-by-motherhood, also reinforcing painful son-preference cultural pressure. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Elder Accountability and Church Discipline | 5:17-22 | Medium | Church discipline applied “without partiality” (ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತ) directly resonates with the Romans baseline’s caste-impartiality doctrine; must be taught as applying without caste or social favoritism, a point of real cultural weight in a caste-conscious social context. | Native speaker review |
| 19 | Slavery and Social Ethics within the Household of Faith | 6:1-2 | Critical | The natural Kannada word ದಾಸ is the central self-designation of Karnataka’s own Haridasa bhakti movement (Purandara Dāsa, Kanaka Dāsa); using ದಾಸ for the literal first-century institution of slavery risks dignifying it by association with the honored devotional identity, or draining the NT’s positive “servant of Christ” metaphor of its force. ಗುಲಾಮ is required for this literal sense. | Human theologian |
| 20 | The Danger of Riches and Love of Money | 3:3; 3:8; 6:6-10; 6:17-19 | High | ಹಣದಾಸೆ/ಲೋಭ must render consistently across 3:3, 3:8, and 6:10 as “a root,” not “the sole root,” of all evils; must be distinguished from both the popular karma-merit economy and the Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic of disciplined sacred work and generous sharing. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Eschatological Hope and Christ’s Appearing | 6:14-15 | High | ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆ must be taught as the one, future, visible, personal return of the same unique Lord who already came once in the flesh, not a repeatable avatar-style descent pattern familiar from Haridasa Krishna-bhakti expectation of further divine manifestations. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Assurance and Confidence in Ministry | 3:13; 6:12-13 | Medium | ಸ್ಥಾನಮಾನ/ಧೈರ್ಯ must be taught as a settled confidence granted through faithful service recognized by the church community, not a self-attained rung on a shatsthala-style mystical ascent ladder. | Native speaker review |
| 23 | Thanksgiving and Gratitude | 2:1; 4:3-4 | Low | Standard term consistent with the Romans baseline; minor risk of over-ritualization only. | Automated review |
| 24 | Respect across Generations in the Church | 5:1-2 | Low | Positive convergence with existing Kannada cultural elder-respect values; low risk beyond disambiguating the age-sense from the distinct church-office sense already flagged under church leadership. | Automated review |
| 25 | Generosity and Good Works | 6:17-19 | Low | Straightforward call to generosity and readiness to share, sharing a root with κοινωνία; low risk, with only minor caution against reading generosity as a merit-earning work rather than a fruit of grace. | Automated review |
Risk Summary (matches doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly): Critical: 11 · High: 9 · Medium: 2 · Low: 3 · Total requiring human theologian review: 20 · Total requiring native speaker review: 2 · Total automated-only: 3.
4. Doctrines Reused from the Romans Baseline (Not Re-Tiered Here)
The following baseline doctrines from doctrine_risk_registry.json (Romans) continue to apply across 1 Timothy at their existing baseline risk tier and are not re-registered as new 1 Timothy doctrines, but translators must still observe them:
| Baseline Doctrine | Where it recurs in 1 Timothy | Baseline Risk (unchanged) |
|---|---|---|
| Faith | 1:2, 1:5, 1:19, 3:9, 3:13, 4:1, 4:6, 6:10-12, 6:21 (note context-shift to “the faith” as a body of doctrine — flagged in 08_core_glossary.md) | High |
| Universal Human Accountability (Sin) | 1:9, 1:15, 5:20, 5:22, 5:24 | High |
| Grace | 1:2, 1:14, 6:21 (in addition to the letter’s own dedicated “Grace and Mercy toward Sinners” doctrine at 1:12-17) | High |
| Church as God’s People | Structural background to “Church as Pillar of Truth” (3:15) | Medium |
| Divine Calling / Effectual Calling | 5:21 (“elect angels,” root term only) | High |
These are logged here for completeness of full-book coverage but do not require new entries in the 1 Timothy doctrine_risk_registry.json, since their risk tier and routing are already governed by the Romans baseline and inherited unchanged.
5. Consistency Statement
This document’s doctrine list, risk tiers, and review routing are identical, term-for-term, to doctrine_risk_registry.json for 1 Timothy. No doctrine has been added, dropped, re-tiered, or re-routed here relative to that registry. This matrix should be read as the chapter-organized narrative expansion of that registry for Phase 2 translator and reviewer reference, and both documents must be updated together if any future revision changes a risk tier or routing decision.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching
Kannada name:
Key terms: sound_doctrine, teach_different_doctrine, myths_and_genealogies, falsely_called_knowledge, conscience, trustworthy_saying
Review routing: Human theologian
ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ’s deliberate medical ‘healthy teaching’ metaphor must be retained; a generic ಸರಿಯಾದ ಬೋಧನೆ (‘correct teaching’) reduces the claim to a bare assertion indistinguishable from Vedantic schools’ own claims to teach sad-vidyā (true knowledge). ಜ್ಞಾನ must never appear unqualified in 6:20, since bare ‘knowledge’ collides with Advaita Vedānta’s jñāna-mārga and the Lingayat shatsthala knowledge-stages.
Qualifications for Church Leadership (Elders and Deacons)
Kannada name:
Key terms: overseer, office_of_overseer, deacon, elder_office, above_reproach, blameless, one_wife_husband, manage_household, dignity, hospitable, self_controlled, good_standing, exercise_authority, pride_conceit, laying_on_of_hands, council_of_elders
Review routing: Human theologian
ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ/ಸಭಾಸೇವಕ must never collapse into the self-attained ಗುರು or itinerant ಜಂಗಮ teaching status; ಸ್ಥಾನಮಾನ (‘good standing,’ 3:13) lexically collides with the Lingayat shatsthala ‘six-step’ ascent toward Aikya and must be taught as reputational esteem, not self-attained rank; ordination by ಕೈ ಇಡುವಿಕೆ must not be read as guru-disciple dīkṣā transmission.
Christ as the One Mediator
Kannada name:
Key terms: mediator, ransom, savior, confession, incarnation
Review routing: Human theologian
ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ must exclude every rival Karnataka intermediary framework: the purohita priest, the guru, the Lingayat jaṅgama, the Haridasa guru-paramparā chain, and coastal-Karnataka daiva/ancestor intermediaries. ವಿಮೋಚನಾ ಕ್ರಯ must never be rendered with ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ, which names a self- or priest-performed ritual expiation rather than Christ’s own substitutionary payment.
The Church as Pillar of Truth
Kannada name:
Key terms: church, household, pillar_and_foundation_of_truth, mystery
Review routing: Human theologian
The architectural pillar-imagery evokes Karnataka’s own celebrated temple pillar-architecture (Hampi, Belur, Halebidu) and Vedantic ‘pillars’ of a philosophical darśana system; must be taught as the church guarding and displaying already-revealed truth entrusted to it, not generating or progressively refining truth as in the staged shatsthala revelation pattern.
Godliness and Contentment
Kannada name:
Key terms: godliness, contentment, love_of_money, mystery
Review routing: Human theologian
ಭಕ್ತಿ is retained by established Kannada Bible convention despite being the very word the Romans baseline rejected for πίστις due to strong Haridasa Krishna-bhakti and Lingayat devotional-surrender associations; every occurrence requires a note distinguishing reverent living flowing from grace-given faith from bhakti as a devotional technique or merit-path toward Aikya. ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ must be distinguished from both Stoic self-sufficiency and ascetic vairāgya.
Guarding the Deposit of Faith
Kannada name:
Key terms: deposit, mystery, falsely_called_knowledge, sound_doctrine, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲಾದ ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪ must not be assimilated to guru-upadeśa esoteric private transmission; it names a publicly-proclaimed gospel entrusted to the whole church to guard together. ಜ್ಞಾನ must never appear unqualified given the collision with Vedantic jñāna-mārga.
Salvation
Kannada name:
Key terms: salvation, savior, childbearing
Review routing: Human theologian
2:15’s ‘saved through childbearing’ is an acute exegetical crux: ರಕ್ಷಣೆ must never be read as salvation earned through motherhood, a misreading that would both contradict justification by faith and reinforce painful Indian son-preference and childbearing-worth cultural pressure on women.
Deity and Lordship of Christ
Kannada name:
Key terms: lord, christ, sovereign_ruler, immortality, glory
Review routing: Human theologian
The closing doxology’s ‘only Sovereign, King of kings’ must retain exclusive supremacy, not read as one ranked deity within a pantheon’s hierarchy (e.g., Indra as king of the gods, or the trimūrti’s functional ranking). ಅಮರತ್ವ must be distinguished from the Vedantic teaching of an inherently immortal ātman: immortality here is God’s own underived nature, given to believers only as a gift.
Incarnation and the Humanity of Christ
Kannada name:
Key terms: incarnation, mediator, mystery
Review routing: Human theologian
Reuse baseline ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ exactly; never ಅವತಾರ. ‘The man Christ Jesus’ (2:5) reinforces full historical humanity underlying the one-mediator claim, distinguishing it from a temporary or repeatable avatar-style descent familiar from Udupi-centered Haridasa Krishna-bhakti expectation.
Women’s Conduct in Worship and Teaching
Kannada name:
Key terms: modesty_reverence, exercise_authority, transgression, childbearing
Review routing: Human theologian
A live complementarian/egalitarian interpretive crux (αὐθεντέω, ಅಧಿಕಾರ ನಡೆಸು); translation must avoid both patriarchal-caste overreading and anachronistic egalitarian softening. 2:15’s ರಕ್ಷಣೆ-through-childbearing must not read as salvation-by-motherhood, which would also reinforce painful son-preference cultural pressure in Indian households.
Slavery and Social Ethics within the Household of Faith
Kannada name:
Key terms: slave_bondservant, master, sound_doctrine
Review routing: Human theologian
The natural Kannada word ದಾಸ is the central self-designation of Karnataka’s own Haridasa bhakti movement (Purandara Dāsa, Kanaka Dāsa); using ದಾಸ for the literal first-century institution of slavery risks dignifying it by association with the honored devotional identity, or draining the NT’s positive ‘servant of Christ’ metaphor of its force. ಗುಲಾಮ is required for this literal sense.
High Risk Doctrines
Public Worship and Prayer
Kannada name:
Key terms: prayer, petition, intercession, thanksgiving, modesty_reverence, self_controlled, exercise_authority
Review routing: Human theologian
Paul’s fourfold prayer vocabulary (ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ, ವಿನಂತಿ, ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ, ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ) must remain four distinct terms, not flattened to one generic word; ಲಜ್ಜೆ (modesty) must not be over-identified with restrictive caste-linked dress codes; the women’s teaching/authority question (ಅಧಿಕಾರ ನಡೆಸು) is a live interpretive crux requiring careful, non-resolving translation.
Care for Widows and the Household of Faith
Kannada name:
Key terms: widow, honor, household, elder_age
Review routing: Human theologian
ವಿಧವೆ must actively resist inherited Indian widow-stigma (restriction from auspicious occasions, remarriage prohibition, treatment as an inauspicious household burden); ಗೌರವ must carry both esteem and material provision, since the passage’s outworking is concrete financial care, not sentiment alone.
Grace and Mercy toward Sinners
Kannada name:
Key terms: grace, mercy, sin
Review routing: Human theologian
ಕರುಣೆ resonates with the pan-Indian ideal of karuṇā as an abstract cosmic-compassion virtue (prominent in Buddhist ethics); here it must be anchored as personal, particular divine compassion shown to Paul, ‘the foremost of sinners,’ received apart from merit, not a generalized cosmic principle or karma-merit exchange.
Right Use of the Law
Kannada name:
Key terms: law, sin, sound_doctrine
Review routing: Human theologian
ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ (never ಧರ್ಮ) is here declared ‘good if used lawfully’ to restrain the lawless, not as a path of merit; must not be conflated with dharma-based caste duty or self-effort discipline, a risk the baseline already flags for this term in Karnataka’s religious vocabulary.
False Asceticism and the Goodness of Creation
Kannada name:
Key terms: creation, godliness, thanksgiving
Review routing: Human theologian
Condemns a specific false teaching that forbidding marriage or certain foods is spiritually required, not a blanket rejection of India’s own voluntary ascetic traditions (sannyāsa), fasting practices (vrata/ekādaśī), or vegetarianism, which retain dignity as personal disciplines when not taught as salvation-necessary requirements.
Spiritual Warfare and Demonic Deception
Kannada name:
Key terms: satan, demon
Review routing: Human theologian
ದೆವ್ವ (not ಭೂತ) must be used for δαιμόνιον to avoid collision with coastal Karnataka’s Bhūta Kōla/Daiva spirit-worship tradition, where bhūta/daiva spirits are honored and consulted as legitimate protective figures rather than uniformly regarded as evil. ಸೈತಾನ must stay distinct from Hindu asura/rākṣasa cosmology.
Household Order and Family Ethics
Kannada name:
Key terms: household, manage_household, household_submission, honor
Review routing: Native speaker review
ಮನೆ/ಮನೆವಾರ್ತೆ carries the letter’s key household-to-church analogy and must render identically across occurrences (3:4-5, 3:12, 3:15, 5:4, 5:8); management must convey servant-oversight, not an autocratic caste-patriarchal domestic authority model.
The Danger of Riches and Love of Money
Kannada name:
Key terms: love_of_money, contentment, godliness
Review routing: Human theologian
ಹಣದಾಸೆ/ಲೋಭ must render consistently across 3:3, 3:8, and 6:10 as ‘a root,’ not ‘the sole root,’ of all evils; must be distinguished from both the popular karma-merit economy and the Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic of disciplined sacred work and generous sharing.
Eschatological Hope and Christ’s Appearing
Kannada name:
Key terms: appearing, sovereign_ruler, lord
Review routing: Human theologian
ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆ must be taught as the one, future, visible, personal return of the same unique Lord who already came once in the flesh, not a repeatable avatar-style descent pattern familiar from Haridasa Krishna-bhakti expectation of further divine manifestations.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Elder Accountability and Church Discipline
Kannada name:
Key terms: elder_office, honor, partiality, laying_on_of_hands
Review routing: Native speaker review
Church discipline applied ‘without partiality’ (ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತ) directly resonates with the Romans baseline’s caste-impartiality doctrine; must be taught as applying without caste or social favoritism, a point of real cultural weight in a caste-conscious social context.
Assurance and Confidence in Ministry
Kannada name:
Key terms: good_standing, boldness_confidence, confession
Review routing: Native speaker review
ಸ್ಥಾನಮಾನ/ಧೈರ್ಯ must be taught as a settled confidence granted through faithful service recognized by the church community, not a self-attained rung on a shatsthala-style mystical ascent ladder.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving and Gratitude
Kannada name:
Key terms: thanksgiving
Review routing: Automated review
Standard term consistent with the Romans baseline; minor risk of over-ritualization only.
Respect across Generations in the Church
Kannada name:
Key terms: elder_age
Review routing: Automated review
Positive convergence with existing Kannada cultural elder-respect values; low risk beyond disambiguating the age-sense from the distinct church-office sense already flagged under church leadership.
Generosity and Good Works
Kannada name:
Key terms: fellowship
Review routing: Automated review
Straightforward call to generosity and readiness to share, sharing a root with κοινωνία; low risk, with only minor caution against reading generosity as a merit-earning work rather than a fruit of grace.
