Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Gospel of John (Kannada)
Methodology
This document catalogs every identifiable Old Testament quotation, allusion, and typological pattern in every chapter of the Gospel of John (chapters 1–21), together with every messianic reference, and cross-maps these to the baseline Romans curriculum already localized into Kannada. Its purpose is to (a) ensure Phase 2 translators render shared OT quotations and shared doctrinal formulas identically wherever John and Romans quote or echo the same source text, and (b) flag translation sensitivities specific to each cross-reference, consistent with the risk-tier conventions and cultural-collision awareness already established in the baseline package and in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md / analysis/08_core_glossary.md.
Every chapter of John is represented below, including chapters that contribute only reinforcing (not new) cross-references — these are noted explicitly as “reviewed, no new cross-reference load” rather than omitted.
Citation Normalization Convention
All citations in this document, and all citations to be used in Phase 2 translator-facing materials, follow the normalized “Book Chapter:Verse” format (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Isaiah 53:1”, “John 3:14”, “Romans 10:16”). Kannada-facing output must follow the established Kannada Bible citation format per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md (book name in Kannada + Arabic numerals, e.g., ಯೋಹಾನ 3:16, ರೋಮಾಪುರದವರಿಗೆ 10:16).

Note on Deuteronomy’s Kannada book name: The established Kannada Bible book title ಧರ್ಮೋಪದೇಶಕಾಂಡ contains the syllable ಧರ್ಮ, which the baseline package forbids as a doctrinal term for “law” (νόμος) and “righteousness” (δικαιοσύνη). This is a proper-noun book title following established Kannada Bible convention, not a doctrinal rendering, and does not conflict with the baseline’s prohibition — the prohibition applies to translating the concept νόμος/δικαιοσύνη within running text (always ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ / ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ), not to the traditional book title. No action needed; noted here only to prevent reviewer confusion.
PART A — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER CROSS-REFERENCE MATRIX
Chapter 1 — Prologue, Witness, First Disciples
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1 | Deity & Pre-existence of Christ | The Word (Logos) | Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning…”) — deliberate echo | Critical. ಆದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ (in the beginning) must match Genesis 1:1’s established Kannada opening exactly, so readers perceive John is deliberately re-opening the creation account with Christ present at it. |
| John 1:3 | Deity of Christ / Creation | The Word | Genesis 1:1-3 (creation by divine speech) | High. Reinforces the Word as personal creative agent, not an impersonal ordering principle (see ವಾಕ್ಯ/Śabda-Brahman caution in Step 1 analysis). |
| John 1:14 | Incarnation | The Word made flesh | Exodus 25:8; 40:34-35 (tabernacle, God’s glory dwelling with Israel) — typological fulfillment | Critical. ವಾಸಿಸಿತು (“dwelt/tabernacled”) must carry the tabernacle echo; do not flatten to a generic “lived among us” that loses the Exodus allusion. |
| John 1:17 | Grace and Law / Fulfillment of Prophecy | Moses / Jesus Christ | Exodus 34:6 (“abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness”) — echoed by “grace and truth” | High. ಕೃಪೆಯೂ ಸತ್ಯವೂ must reuse baseline ಕೃಪೆ exactly; parallels Romans’ grace-vs-law argument (Romans 3:21-24; 10:4). See Part C below. |
| John 1:21,25 | Messianic Promise | John the Baptist | Deuteronomy 18:15 (“the Prophet” like Moses); Malachi 4:5 (Elijah to come) | Medium. Requires OT background note on the expected end-times “Prophet” and “Elijah” figures. |
| John 1:23 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | John the Baptist | Isaiah 40:3 (quotation: “the voice of one crying in the wilderness”) | High. Direct quotation; render consistently with any other Gospel-curriculum use of Isaiah 40:3 in this language pair. |
| John 1:29,36 | Substitutionary Death | John the Baptist / Jesus | Exodus 12 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (silent lamb led to slaughter) — typology | High. ದೇವರ ಕುರಿಮರಿ requires Passover/Exodus 12 background note; must not be read as mere gentleness metaphor. |
| John 1:32-33 | Holy Spirit / Messianic anointing | Jesus, Holy Spirit | Isaiah 11:2 (Spirit resting on the messianic branch); Isaiah 42:1 (Spirit-anointed servant) | Medium. ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ reuse; anchors Spirit’s descent as messianic identification. |
| John 1:45 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | Philip, Nathanael | General (“Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote”) — Torah and Prophets as a unified messianic witness | Medium. Reinforces “Fulfillment of Prophecy” doctrine already in baseline. |
| John 1:47 | Contrast typology | Nathanael / Jacob | Genesis 27 (Jacob’s deceit); Genesis 32:28 (Jacob renamed Israel) — Nathanael as “true Israelite” implicitly contrasted with the patriarch’s earlier deceit | Low-Medium. Requires background note; no doctrinal risk, but easily missed without OT literacy. |
| John 1:51 | Deity & Pre-existence of Christ | Son of Man | Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder, angels ascending/descending) — typology: Christ himself is the true connecting-point between heaven and earth | High. Must preserve ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರ (baseline glossary term) and the ascending/descending imagery consistent with 3:13’s ἀναβαίνω/καταβαίνω vocabulary. |
Chapter 2 — Cana and the Temple
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 2:17 | Christ’s zeal / foreshadowing suffering | Jesus | Psalm 69:9 (quotation: “Zeal for your house will consume me”) | Critical for cross-curriculum consistency. Psalm 69 is also quoted in Romans 15:3 (“The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me,” Psalm 69:9b). Both quotations draw from the same psalm; the Kannada rendering of Psalm 69:9 must be identical across John and Romans materials. See Part C. |
| John 2:19-21 | Resurrection typology / Incarnation | Jesus, the temple | Implicit contrast with the Jerusalem temple as locus of God’s presence; anticipates John 1:14’s tabernacle motif | High. See ναός caution in Step 1 analysis (avoid idol-housing temple-theology misreading). |
Chapter 3 — New Birth (Core Passage, vv.1-21) and John the Baptist’s Testimony (vv.22-36)
(Full verse-by-verse OT/typological connections already exhaustively documented in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md; consolidated here for the cross-reference matrix.)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:3,7 | New Birth and Regeneration | Nicodemus, Jesus | Ezekiel 36:25-27 (God’s promise of a new heart, a new spirit, cleansing water); Jeremiah 31:31-34 (new covenant written on the heart) | Critical. Ties “new birth” to the New Covenant promise already latent in Israel’s own Scriptures — Nicodemus, “the teacher of Israel” (3:10), should have recognized this from Ezekiel. |
| John 3:5 | New Birth / Holy Spirit | Jesus | Ezekiel 36:25-27; Ezekiel 37:1-14 (dry bones, Spirit-given life) | Critical. ನೀರು/ಆತ್ಮ pairing must allow the informed reader to hear the Ezekiel echo; a translator note connecting to Ezekiel 36 is required (already flagged in Step 1). |
| John 3:14 | Substitutionary Death (typology) | Moses, Son of Man | Numbers 21:4-9 (bronze serpent lifted up in the wilderness) | Critical. Requires OT narrative background note; must not be conflated with regional Nagaradhane (serpent-worship) associations — the serpent here is a historical sign-object, not an object of veneration. |
| John 3:16 | God’s Love for the World / Eternal Life | God, the Son | Thematic echo of Deuteronomy 7:7-8 (God’s initiating covenant love for Israel, “not because you were more in number”) extended here to the whole world (κόσμος) | High. No direct quotation, but theological continuity: God’s love as self-originating and unmerited, now universalized beyond one nation. Parallels Romans 5:8 exactly (see Part C). |
| John 3:18 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | — | Anticipates the “already judged” motif later echoed in Romans’ universal-accountability language (Romans 3:23; 1:18-20) | High. See Part C for the Romans parallel. |
| John 3:29 | Christ’s supremacy / subordinate witness | John the Baptist | Analogy to OT bridegroom/covenant imagery (Isaiah 62:5; Hosea 2:19-20, God as Israel’s bridegroom) applied typologically to Christ | Medium. Background note recommended connecting Christ-as-bridegroom to OT covenant-marriage imagery. |
| John 3:36 | Judgment / Wrath of God | — | General OT wrath-and-covenant-disobedience pattern (e.g., Deuteronomy 28) | High. ದೇವರ ಕೋಪ must read as personal righteous anger, consistent with OT covenant-lawsuit language, not impersonal karmic retribution. |
Chapter 4 — The Samaritan Woman; the Royal Official’s Son
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 4:5-6,12 | Patriarchal background / typology of “living water” | The Samaritan woman, Jacob | Genesis 33:18-19; 48:22 (Jacob’s well/land) | Low-Medium. Background note on the Jacob narrative aids comprehension but carries no major doctrinal risk. |
| John 4:14 | Eternal Life through Faith | Jesus | Echoes Isaiah 55:1 (“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters”) and Isaiah 12:3 (“with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation”) | High. ಜೀವಜಲ should be understood against this Isaiah background of freely offered, life-giving water — not merely a private metaphor invented for this scene. |
| John 4:20-25 | True worship / Messianic Promise | The Samaritan woman, Jesus | Deuteronomy 12 (centralized worship at the place the LORD chooses); 2 Kings 17 (Samaritan-Jewish schism background) | Medium. Requires background note on Jewish-Samaritan worship dispute (Gerizim vs. Jerusalem). |
| John 4:42 | God’s Love for the World | The Samaritans | Thematic parallel to Isaiah 49:6 (a light “to the ends of the earth”) | High. ಲೋಕದ ರಕ್ಷಕ universalizes salvation beyond ethnic Israel — direct parallel to Romans’ “no distinction” language (Romans 3:22, 10:12). See Part C. |
Chapter 5 — Sabbath Healing, Equality with God
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 5:17-18 | Deity of Christ | Jesus | Genesis 2:2-3 (God’s Sabbath rest) — Jesus claims ongoing divine prerogative (“My Father is working until now, and I am working”) | Critical. Directly parallels Romans 9:5 (“Christ, who is God over all”). |
| John 5:29 | Resurrection / Judgment | — | Daniel 12:2 (“many…shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt”) | Critical. ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ reuse; two-fold destiny language must mirror Daniel’s dual-resurrection structure without softening either outcome. |
| John 5:39,45-47 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | Moses, Jesus | Deuteronomy 18:15; general Torah messianic typology (Genesis 3:15, 49:10; Numbers 24:17) | High. “Moses wrote of me” — a sweeping claim that the whole Mosaic corpus points to Christ; requires teaching note, directly reinforces baseline’s “Fulfillment of Prophecy” doctrine entry. |
Chapter 6 — Bread of Life
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 6:31-32 | Eternal Life through Faith | Jesus, the crowd | Exodus 16:4,15 (manna); Psalm 78:24 (quotation: “he…gave them bread from heaven to eat”) | Critical. Direct quotation; ಜೀವದ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ discourse depends entirely on the reader recognizing the manna typology — OT background note mandatory. |
| John 6:45 | Effectual Calling / New Birth | — | Isaiah 54:13 (quotation: “they will all be taught by God”) | High. Directly parallels the effectual-calling doctrine already in the Romans baseline (Romans 8:28-30) — see Part C. |
| John 6:49-51 | Eternal Life vs. mortality | Jesus | Contrast typology with Exodus 16 manna: “your fathers ate the manna…and died” vs. “whoever eats of this bread will live forever” | High. Reinforces ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ as qualitatively different from mere physical sustenance/survival. |
Chapter 7 — Feast of Booths; Living Water
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 7:37-38 | Holy Spirit / Eternal Life | Jesus | Composite allusion: Isaiah 58:11; Zechariah 14:8; Ezekiel 47:1-9 (rivers flowing from the temple/Jerusalem) — set within the Feast of Booths’ water-drawing ceremony | High. Requires background note connecting the Feast-of-Booths ritual (drawing and pouring water, commemorating the wilderness rock, Exodus 17:6/Numbers 20:11) to Jesus’s declaration. |
| John 7:42 | Davidic Covenant / Messianic Promise | The crowd | Micah 5:2 (Messiah from Bethlehem); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant) | Critical. Direct structural parallel to Romans’ “seed_of_david”/Davidic Covenant doctrine (Romans 1:3) — see Part C; reuse baseline ದಾವೀದ exactly. |
Chapter 8 — Light of the World; Truth and Freedom; “Before Abraham, I Am”
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 8:12 | Judgment / Deity of Christ | Jesus | Isaiah 9:2 (“the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light”); Isaiah 42:6; 49:6 (light to the nations) | High. ಲೋಕದ ಬೆಳಕು directly fulfills the Isaianic Servant’s light-to-the-nations role — background note recommended. |
| John 8:17 | Legal witness pattern | Jesus | Deuteronomy 19:15 (quotation: “the testimony of two people is true”) | Medium. Standard legal-witness citation; low doctrinal risk. |
| John 8:44 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | The Pharisees, the devil | Genesis 3 (the serpent’s deception) — typological identification of unbelief with the primal deceiver | High. ಸೈತಾನ; must not soften “father the devil” into a merely rhetorical insult — it names a real spiritual paternity of unbelief. |
| John 8:56 | Messianic Promise / Pre-existence | Abraham, Jesus | Genesis 17:17; 22:1-18 (Abraham’s joy/faith in God’s promise) | Critical. Directly parallels Romans 4 (Abraham’s faith credited as righteousness, quoting Genesis 15:6) — Abraham is the shared patriarchal anchor-figure for both curricula. See Part C. |
| John 8:58 | Deity & Pre-existence of Christ | Jesus | Exodus 3:14 (God’s self-revelation to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”) | Critical. ನಾನೇ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ must echo the divine Name; render consistently with any Exodus 3:14 rendering used elsewhere in this language pair’s Scripture materials. |
Chapter 9 — The Man Born Blind
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 9:5 | Judgment / Light-Darkness | Jesus | Reuse of Isaiah 9:2/42:6 light-to-the-nations background (see 8:12) | Medium. No new OT citation; reinforces established light/darkness theme. |
| John 9:22 | Cost of confession | The blind man’s parents | No direct OT citation; social-exclusion background parallels Isaiah 66:5 (being cast out for God’s name) | Low. Reviewed; no new critical term. |
Chapter 9 reviewed in full: contributes no new OT quotations beyond reinforcement of the light/darkness and sign motifs already documented.
Chapter 10 — Good Shepherd; “I and the Father Are One”
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 10:1-16 | Substitutionary Death / Christ’s care | Jesus, the Good Shepherd | Ezekiel 34:11-16,23-24 (God himself as shepherd; one shepherd, David’s descendant); Psalm 23:1; Zechariah 11:4-14 (contrast: false/foolish shepherds) | High. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕುರುಬ requires OT background note; the shepherd typology directly ties to the Davidic Covenant doctrine as well (Ezekiel 34:23, “my servant David”). |
| John 10:16 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles | Jesus | Thematic echo of Isaiah 56:8 (“I will gather yet others to him besides those already gathered”) | High. “Other sheep…not of this fold” directly parallels Romans 11’s olive-tree Jew-Gentile unity image — see Part C. |
| John 10:30 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Jesus | No direct OT quotation; theological culmination of the “I AM” self-disclosures (cf. 8:58, Exodus 3:14) | Critical. Primary proof-text for this doctrine; see Step 1 Aikya-distinction cautions. |
| John 10:34-36 | Deity of Christ (argument from Scripture) | Jesus | Psalm 82:6 (quotation: “I said, you are gods”) | High. Jesus’s argument is a rabbinic qal va-chomer (lesser-to-greater) inference from Psalm 82; requires a careful translator note so the argument’s logic is not lost or misread as diminishing Christ’s unique deity (the argument in fact heightens, not lowers, the force of his claim). |
Chapter 11 — Lazarus Raised; “I Am the Resurrection and the Life”
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 11:25 | Resurrection / Eternal Life | Jesus | Daniel 12:2; Ezekiel 37:1-14 (dry bones raised to life by the Spirit) | Critical. ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನವೂ ಜೀವವೂ ನಾನೇ; reuse baseline term exactly. |
| John 11:49-52 | Substitutionary Death (unwitting prophecy) | Caiaphas | Isaiah 53 (Suffering Servant, substitutionary death “for many”); structural parallel to Numbers 22-24 (Balaam’s unintentional true prophecy) | High. See ὑπέρ (“on behalf of”) rendering-consistency note in Step 1 analysis; directly parallels Romans 5:6-8’s “Christ died for us” (ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν). See Part C. |
Chapter 12 — Triumphal Entry; the Hour; Isaiah’s Witness
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 12:13 | Messianic Promise | The crowd | Psalm 118:25-26 (quotation: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”) | High. Direct quotation; Psalm 118 is also a foundational “cornerstone” text elsewhere in the NT (cf. Romans 9:33 quotes Isaiah, not Psalm 118, but the “stone” motif cluster is related — flag for reviewer awareness). |
| John 12:15 | Messianic Promise | Jesus | Zechariah 9:9 (quotation: “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”) | Critical. Direct messianic quotation; render with full recognition this fulfills a named, specific OT prophecy — do not generalize to “a king” but preserve “your king” (Zion’s own promised king). |
| John 12:27 | Christ’s full humanity / anticipation of the cross | Jesus | Psalm 6:3; 42:5-6 (“my soul is troubled”) — lament-psalm register | Medium. Reinforces Christ’s genuine human distress; no doctrinal risk if rendered plainly. |
| John 12:38 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | — (narrator) | Isaiah 53:1 (quotation: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us?”) | Critical for cross-curriculum consistency. This exact verse is also quoted in Romans 10:16. The Kannada rendering must be identical in both curricula. See Part C. |
| John 12:40 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | — (narrator) | Isaiah 6:10 (quotation: “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart…”) | High. Judicial hardening language; must read as a personal divine response to sustained unbelief (consistent with Romans 11:8’s parallel citation of Isaiah 29:10/Deuteronomy 29:4), not impersonal fate. See Part C. |
| John 12:41 | Deity & Pre-existence of Christ | Isaiah | Isaiah 6:1-5 (Isaiah’s temple vision of the LORD’s glory) — narrator’s claim that Isaiah “saw his [Christ’s] glory” | Critical. A direct NT claim that Christ is the LORD (YHWH) whom Isaiah saw enthroned; ಮಹಿಮೆ (glory) reuse; must not be softened to “saw a vision related to” but preserved as “saw his [Christ’s own] glory.” |
Chapter 13 — Foot Washing; the New Commandment
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 13:18 | Substitutionary Death (betrayal foretold) | Judas | Psalm 41:9 (quotation: “He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me”) | High. Direct quotation; render with the betrayal-by-an-intimate force intact. |
| John 13:34-35 | Mutual Love / New Commandment | Jesus | Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself”) — transformed and intensified as “as I have loved you” | Medium. The “new” commandment is new in its Christ-centered standard, not a replacement of Leviticus 19:18’s original command; background note recommended. |
Chapter 14 — The Way, the Truth, the Life; the Counselor Promised
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 14:6 | Eternal Life through Faith / Exclusivity | Jesus | Thematic echo of Deuteronomy 30:15-20 (“I have set before you life and death…”); Psalm 16:11 (“you make known to me the path of life”) | Critical. No direct quotation, but deep thematic continuity with the OT “way of life” tradition; the exclusivity clause must not be softened (see Step 1 analysis). |
| John 14:16,26 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Jesus, Holy Spirit | Anticipatory background for Joel 2:28-29 (Spirit poured out on all flesh) — fulfilled explicitly at Pentecost (Acts 2:16-21), not directly quoted in John but theologically anticipated here | High. ಸಹಾಯಕನಾದ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ; background note connecting the Counselor promise forward to Joel’s prophecy (quoted in Acts, a related NT curriculum) is recommended for teaching continuity. |
Chapter 15 — The True Vine
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 15:1,5 | Union with Christ | Jesus | Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 15:1-8; 19:10-14 (Israel repeatedly pictured as God’s vine/vineyard, which failed to bear fruit) | Critical. Christ is the vine Israel was called to be but was not; requires OT background note (already flagged in Step 1). |
| John 15:25 | Unjust suffering foretold | Jesus | Psalm 35:19; Psalm 69:4 (quotation: “They hated me without a cause”) | High. Second Psalm 69 citation in John (cf. 2:17); reinforce cross-reference consistency with Romans 15:3’s use of the same psalm — see Part C. |
Chapter 16 — The Spirit’s Convicting Work; Christ Has Overcome
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 16:8-11 | Holy Spirit as Counselor / Judgment | Holy Spirit | Thematic continuation of Isaiah 11:1-5 (the Spirit-anointed one bringing righteous judgment) | Critical. Compounds several already-Critical baseline terms (ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ, ಪಾಪ, ತೀರ್ಪು); must render consistently with 3:20’s ἐλέγχω. |
| John 16:32 | Foretold abandonment | Jesus, the disciples | Zechariah 13:7 (“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered”) — echoed, not directly quoted (cf. Matthew 26:31 for the direct quotation in a Synoptic-Gospel curriculum) | Medium. Flag for reviewers: if a Synoptic-Gospels curriculum is later added to this language package, Zechariah 13:7’s rendering there must match any echo-rendering used here. |
Chapter 17 — The High Priestly Prayer
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 17:3 | Eternal Life through Faith | Jesus | Thematic anchor defining ζωὴ αἰώνιος; echoes Jeremiah 9:23-24 (“let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me”) | Critical. This is the Gospel’s own definitional verse for “eternal life” — see Step 1 analysis; the primary anchor-text against moksha/jiva-liberation misreadings. |
| John 17:5,24 | Deity & Pre-existence of Christ | Jesus | Proverbs 8:22-31 (Wisdom personified, “before the world began”); echoes Genesis 1:1/John 1:1 | Critical. Must preserve absolute, linear, pre-creation temporal priority — not priority within a cyclical cosmology. |
| John 17:12 | Fulfillment of Prophecy (Judas) | Jesus, Judas | Psalm 41:9 (cf. 13:18); Psalm 109 (“the son of destruction”) background | High. Reinforces the betrayal-prophecy thread begun at 13:18. |
Chapter 18 — Arrest and Trial
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 18:9 | Providence / Assurance | Jesus | Self-referential fulfillment of Jesus’s own earlier word (John 6:39, “I should lose nothing of all that he has given me”) | Medium. Internal Johannine cross-reference rather than OT; still requires consistent “keep/lose none” vocabulary across chs. 6, 10, 17, 18. |
| John 18:36 | Kingdom Mission | Jesus, Pilate | Contrast with Daniel 2:44 and Daniel 7:13-14 (an everlasting, not-of-this-world kingdom granted to “one like a son of man”) | High. ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ reuse; “not of this world” clarifies but does not diminish the kingdom’s reality — directly resonant with Daniel 7’s heavenly-kingdom expectation. |
Chapter 19 — Crucifixion
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 19:24 | Substitutionary Death | The soldiers | Psalm 22:18 (quotation: “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots”) | Critical. Direct quotation from the great crucifixion psalm (Psalm 22); render with full recognition of the fulfillment claim. |
| John 19:28 | Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Psalm 22:15; Psalm 69:21 (“for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink”) | Critical. Third Psalm 69 citation-cluster in John (cf. 2:17; 15:25); consistent Psalm 69 rendering across all three occurrences and with Romans 15:3 is required — see Part C. |
| John 19:36 | Substitutionary Death (Passover typology) | — (narrator) | Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20 (quotation: “Not one of his bones will be broken”) | Critical. Completes the Passover-lamb typology opened at 1:29; must be rendered so the Exodus 12 echo is unmistakable. |
| John 19:37 | Substitutionary Death / Judgment | — (narrator) | Zechariah 12:10 (quotation: “They will look on him whom they have pierced”) | Critical. Also quoted in Revelation 1:7 (a related NT curriculum, if added later); render consistently across any future shared use. |
Chapter 20 — Resurrection; Thomas’s Confession
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 20:9 | Resurrection of Christ | The disciples | General background: Psalm 16:10 (“you will not let your Holy One see corruption”) — the OT resurrection text most directly applied to Christ elsewhere in the NT (Acts 2:27,31; 13:35) | High. Not directly quoted in John itself, but load-bearing background; flag for reviewers in case Acts materials are later added to this language package, so Psalm 16:10’s rendering is pre-coordinated. |
| John 20:28 | Deity of Christ | Thomas | Thematic echo of Psalm 35:23 (“Awake…for my cause, my God and my Lord!”) | Critical. ನನ್ನ ಕರ್ತನೂ ನನ್ನ ದೇವರೂ; the Gospel’s climactic deity confession — reuse baseline ಕರ್ತ + ದೇವರು exactly, matching Romans 10:9’s “Jesus is Lord” confession vocabulary. See Part C. |
Chapter 21 — Epilogue
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 21:15-17 | Restoration / Shepherding ministry | Peter, Jesus | Ezekiel 34:23 (“I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David”) — Peter commissioned as an under-shepherd of the one Good Shepherd | Medium. Reinforces ch.10’s shepherd typology; Peter’s ministry is derivative, not independent. |
| John 21:18-19 | Substitutionary discipleship / martyrdom | Peter | No direct OT citation | Low. Reviewed; no new critical term. |

PART C — TYPOLOGY SUMMARY TABLE
| OT Type | NT Antitype (John reference) | Theological Significance | Rendering Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passover lamb (Exodus 12) | Lamb of God (1:29,36); unbroken bones (19:36) | Substitutionary, sin-bearing death | ದೇವರ ಕುರಿಮರಿ; requires Passover background note |
| Bronze serpent (Numbers 21:4-9) | Son of Man lifted up (3:14) | Life through looking in faith at the crucified one | ಸರ್ಪ; must not be conflated with Nagaradhane serpent veneration |
| Manna (Exodus 16) | Bread of Life (6:31-58) | True, eternal sustenance vs. temporary physical provision | ಜೀವದ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ; OT background required |
| Tabernacle/Temple (Exodus 25, 40) | The Word became flesh and “tabernacled” among us (1:14); Jesus’s body as temple (2:19-21) | God’s personal dwelling with humanity | ವಾಸಿಸಿತು / ದೇವಾಲಯ; avoid idol-housing temple-theology misreading |
| Jacob’s ladder (Genesis 28:12) | Son of Man, the connecting point of heaven and earth (1:51) | Christ as the sole mediator between God and humanity | ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರ consistency with ch.3 ascend/descend vocabulary |
| Vine/vineyard Israel (Psalm 80; Isaiah 5; Jeremiah 2; Ezekiel 15,19) | The true vine (15:1,5) | Christ succeeds where Israel, as vine, failed to bear fruit | ನಿಜವಾದ ದ್ರಾಕ್ಷಾಲತೆ; OT background required |
| Shepherd-King David/God (Ezekiel 34; Psalm 23) | The Good Shepherd (10:1-18); Peter commissioned (21:15-17) | Sacrificial, personal, sovereign care for God’s people | ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕುರುಬ; ministry is derivative of Christ’s own shepherding |
| Rock/water in the wilderness (Exodus 17:6; Numbers 20:11) | Rivers of living water (7:37-38) | Spirit-given life flowing from Christ | ಜೀವಜಲ; Feast of Booths background required |
| Wisdom before creation (Proverbs 8:22-31) | The Word/Son’s pre-existent glory “before the foundation of the world” (17:5,24; cf. 1:1-3) | Eternal pre-existence and agency in creation | ಲೋಕದ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಗೆ ಮುಂಚೆ; must preserve linear (not cyclical) pre-creation priority |
PART D — PARALLELS TO ROMANS AND RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULES
The following table identifies every point where John and the already-localized Romans curriculum (a) quote or allude to the same OT source text, or (b) develop the same doctrine using parallel theological vocabulary already fixed in the Romans translation_memory.json. Phase 2 translators must treat these as binding consistency constraints, not independent judgment calls.
| Shared OT source / doctrine | John reference | Romans reference | Consistency rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isaiah 53:1 (“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us?”) | John 12:38 | Romans 10:16 | MANDATORY IDENTICAL RENDERING. Both curricula quote the identical LXX verse in an identical rhetorical function (explaining unbelief despite proclamation). The Kannada text of this verse must be word-for-word identical in both documents. |
| Psalm 69 (multiple verses: 69:4, 69:9, 69:21) | John 2:17 (69:9a); John 15:25 (69:4); John 19:28-29 (69:21) | Romans 15:3 (69:9b) | MANDATORY CONSISTENT RENDERING across all cited verses of this psalm in both curricula; translators should render Psalm 69 as a single coordinated unit even though different verses are cited in each location, so a reader encountering both curricula recognizes the shared source. |
| Genesis 15:6 / Abraham’s faith | John 8:56 (Abraham’s joy in seeing Christ’s day, by faith in the promise) | Romans 4:3 (direct quotation: “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”) — baseline term imputed_righteousness (ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ) | Abraham is the shared patriarchal anchor for justification-by-faith theology in both curricula. John does not quote Genesis 15:6 directly, but the two passages must be taught as complementary: Abraham’s faith (Romans 4) and Abraham’s joyful anticipation of Christ (John 8:56) are the same faith relationship. No shared Kannada quotation to enforce verbatim, but ನಂಬಿಕೆ (faith, baseline reuse) must be used identically in both contexts. |
| Isaiah 6:10 (judicial hardening) | John 12:40 | Romans 11:8 (parallel citation cluster: Deuteronomy 29:4/Isaiah 29:10, “a spirit of stupor”) | Both texts describe God’s judicial hardening of persistent unbelief. Render both with the same register of personal, relational divine response to willful unbelief — never impersonal fate/karma language (ಹಣೆಬರಹ forbidden per baseline). Cross-check vocabulary for “hardened”/“blinded” between the two curricula’s existing translations before finalizing John’s rendering. |
| ”Jesus is Lord” / “My Lord and my God” confession | John 20:28 | Romans 10:9 (fixed baseline rendering: ಯೇಸು ಕರ್ತನಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ) | MANDATORY TERM CONSISTENCY. ಕರ್ತ (never ಸ್ವಾಮಿ) must be used in John 20:28 exactly as fixed in Romans 10:9. Both are the Gospel’s/Epistle’s respective climactic confession of Christ’s Lordship and must use identical core vocabulary even though the two verses are grammatically distinct. |
| Davidic Covenant / “seed of David” | John 7:42 (Messiah from David’s offspring, from Bethlehem) | Romans 1:3 (baseline term seed_of_david, ದಾವೀದನ ವಂಶದಿಂದ) | Reuse ದಾವೀದ (baseline) and the same “descended from David” phrasing pattern (ದಾವೀದನ ವಂಶದಿಂದ) in John 7:42 as fixed for Romans 1:3, so students recognize the same Davidic-covenant fulfillment claim in both books. |
| Deity of Christ / Son of God declared | John 1:1,14; 5:18; 10:30; 20:28 | Romans 1:3-4 (descended from David according to the flesh; declared Son of God in power by the resurrection); Romans 9:5 (“Christ, who is God over all”) | Both curricula converge on the same doctrinal cluster (Deity of Christ). ದೇವರ ಮಗ and ದೇವರು must be used with identical rigor in both; the resurrection-as-vindication logic of Romans 1:4 should be taught alongside John 20:28’s post-resurrection confession as mutually reinforcing. |
| Resurrection of Christ | John 5:29; 11:25; 20:1-29 | Romans 1:4; 4:25; 6:4-5; 8:11 | ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ (baseline, Critical) must be used identically; never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ in either curriculum. |
| Universal Scope of the Gospel (“whoever believes”/“no distinction”) | John 3:15-16; 4:42; 10:16; 11:52; 12:32 | Romans 1:16; 3:22; 10:12-13 (quoting Joel 2:32, “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”) | Both must retain fully unqualified universality. Although John does not directly quote Joel 2:32, its “whoever believes” formula (πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων) and Romans’ quotation of Joel’s “everyone who calls” (πᾶς ὃς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται) must be recognized by translators as the same universal-scope doctrine and rendered with equally unqualified inclusiveness — ನಂಬುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನೂ (John) alongside ಕರೆಯುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನೂ-style phrasing (Romans), both unqualified. |
| Grace as unmerited gift, not merit/works | John 1:16-17 (“grace upon grace…grace and truth came through Jesus Christ”) | Romans 3:24; 4:4-5; 11:5-6 (baseline doctrine grace) | ಕೃಪೆ (baseline, High risk) reused exactly; both curricula must preserve grace-vs-merit contrast against karma-merit economy and Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic per the baseline’s established cultural-collision notes. |
| Effectual Calling / Providence | John 6:37-45 (“All that the Father gives me will come to me…taught by God,” quoting Isaiah 54:13) | Romans 8:28-30; 9:11-12 (baseline doctrines effectual_calling, providence) | Render John 6:37-45 with the same sovereign-yet-personal-God register as Romans 8:28-30; never ಹಣೆಬರಹ (fatalism) or ಕರ್ಮದ ನಿಯಮ (karma). |
| Adoption / Children of God | John 1:12-13 (“children of God…born…of God”) | Romans 8:15-17,23 (baseline term adoption, ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ) | Although John’s vocabulary (τέκνα θεοῦ, “children of God,” ದೇವರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು) differs lexically from Romans’ forensic υἱοθεσία (ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ), both describe the same reality of new, permanent, gifted sonship-status. Teaching materials should cross-reference both without implying they are in tension; translators should not import ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ into John’s text itself (which uses different, birth-based imagery) but may cross-reference it in footnotes. |
| Kingdom of God | John 3:3,5; 18:36 | Romans 14:17 (baseline term kingdom_of_god, ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ) | Reuse ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ exactly in all John occurrences. |
| Law given through Moses vs. grace/truth through Christ | John 1:17 | Romans 10:4 (“Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes”) | ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ (baseline, never ಧರ್ಮ) reused exactly in John 1:17; both texts present the Mosaic law and Christ’s grace/truth as sequential, not competing, revelations — avoid any rendering suggesting law and grace are two equally valid “paths.” |
| Sin / universal accountability | John 1:29 (“who takes away the sin of the world”); 8:34,46; 9:41; 16:8-9 | Romans 3:23; 1:18-3:20 (baseline doctrine universal_human_accountability) | ಪಾಪ (baseline, High) reused exactly; both curricula teach sin as moral transgression before a personal God, never ritual impurity or impersonal karmic ledger. |
| Substitutionary death (“for”/ὑπέρ) | John 10:11,15 (“lays down his life for the sheep”); 11:50-52; 15:13; 18:14 | Romans 5:6-8 (“Christ died for us,” ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν) | Render the “for”/“on behalf of” preposition in John with the same Kannada substitution-conveying construction (-ಗೋಸ್ಕರ/-ಪರವಾಗಿ) established for Romans 5:6-8, so the substitutionary logic reads identically across both books. |
Additional Cross-Curriculum Rendering-Consistency Rules
- Psalm 69 coordinated rendering — Because Psalm 69 is cited across three John passages (2:17; 15:25; 19:28) and one Romans passage (15:3), Phase 2 should produce a single master Kannada rendering of the relevant Psalm 69 verses (4, 9, 21) before either curriculum’s segments are finalized, and both curricula must draw from that single master rendering.
- Isaiah 53:1 verbatim rule — John 12:38 and Romans 10:16 must be byte-for-byte identical in Kannada. This is a hard consistency requirement, not a stylistic preference.
- “Jesus is Lord” confession family — John 20:28’s ನನ್ನ ಕರ್ತನೂ ನನ್ನ ದೇವರೂ and Romans 10:9’s ಯೇಸು ಕರ್ತನಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ must both use ಕರ್ತ (never ಸ್ವಾಮಿ) with no exceptions, per both curricula’s shared Critical-risk status for this term.
- Davidic descent formula — Any future reference to Christ’s Davidic descent in John (7:42) should reuse the Romans 1:3 sentence pattern (ದಾವೀದನ ವಂಶದಿಂದ) rather than inventing new phrasing.
- Grace/works contrast vocabulary — Wherever John’s text touches grace-vs-law (1:17) or implied merit (6:28-29, “what must we do to be doing the works of God?” answered by “believe”), reuse the same ಕೃಪೆ-vs-ಕರ್ಮ/ಕೆಲಸ contrast register already established for Romans 3-4 and 11:5-6, including the same caution against the kayaka-dasoha and karma-merit cultural collision points documented in the baseline.
- Universal scope vocabulary — “Whoever believes” (John) and “everyone who calls / no distinction” (Romans) must both read as fully unqualified in Kannada; neither curriculum may introduce implicit qualifiers (e.g., limiting to a particular caste, community, or spiritual-attainment level) not present in the source text.
