Core Glossary
08 — Core Glossary: 2 Timothy
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across all four chapters of 2 Timothy. Terms marked [BASELINE] already exist in the Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json and MUST be reused exactly as recorded there — no alternative rendering is proposed. Terms marked [NEW] are proposed additions for Phase 1 Step 4 confirmation before being written into an updated translation_memory.json. Risk tiers follow the baseline’s Critical/High/Medium/Low framework.

| 70 | form of godliness (denying its power) | ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಬಾಹ್ಯರೂಪ, ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಗಳೆಯುವುದು | daivabhaktiya bāhyarūpa, ādare adara sāmarthyavannu allagaḷeyuvudu | NEW | High | 3 | Apostasy and False Teachers | ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ reused per baseline’s power-of-God rule. |

Cross-Reference: Terms Requiring Mandatory Translator Notes
Per the baseline requirements document’s footnote rule, the following terms MUST carry a [TRANSLATOR NOTE] on first occurrence in any Phase 2 translation of 2 Timothy, given their doctrinal load and collision risk:
- #24 God-breathed (θεόπνευστος) — distinguish from vachana/kirtane inspiration claims.
- #62 resurrection already past (named heresy) — flag as condemned error, not a valid alternate reading.
- #69 godliness (εὐσέβεια) — flag the ಭಕ್ತಿ-collision risk explicitly; recommend ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ over bare ಭಕ್ತಿ.
- #35 appearing (ἐπιφάνεια) — distinguish from avatāra-descent theology.
- #76 crown of righteousness — clarify as consistent with, not opposed to, imputed righteousness/grace.
- #51 good deposit / #52 guard / #53 entrust — clarify as the technical trust-transmission image (Faithful Transmission of the Gospel doctrine), not a loose paraphrase.
Next Steps (Phase 1 Step 2–4)
- Theologian review of all Critical/High new terms above (especially #24, #35, #62, #69, #76, #77).
- Native speaker review of all Medium terms.
- Confirmed terms to be merged into an updated
translation_memory.json(version increment) andbible_term_registry.json, and added to a newdoctrine_risk_registry.jsondoctrine set for 2 Timothy’s seven curriculum doctrines. - All terms marked [BASELINE] require no further action beyond exact reuse.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: ದೇವರು
Transliteration: Dēvaru
Doctrine: God
Rejected alternatives: ಭಗವಂತ, ಪರಶಿವ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. In 2 Timothy, ದೇವರು is invoked as witness to Paul’s solemn charge (4:1) and named as the giver of grace and holy calling ‘before the world began’ (1:9). Avoid ಭಗವಂತ (generic deity honorific) and ಪರಶಿವ (the Lingayat formless ultimate, whose relationship to the devotee ends in Aikya-merger).
Jesus
Approved rendering: ಯೇಸು
Transliteration: Yēsu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ಈಸಾ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. ಯೇಸು is the Kannada Christian standard throughout 2 Timothy; never ಈಸಾ (Muslim/Urdu usage).
Christ
Approved rendering: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ
Transliteration: Krista
Doctrine: Christology
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
New explicit translation_memory entry for this curriculum. Not a separate JSON entry in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json, but its transliteration ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ is already fixed there as a naming convention in the baseline requirements document. Central to the gospel summary ‘Jesus Christ… of the seed of David, raised from the dead’ (2:8). Never treated as one of several avatar-titles available to Krishna-bhakti devotional categories.
Lord
Approved rendering: ಕರ್ತ
Transliteration: karta
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ಸ್ವಾಮಿ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. In 2 Timothy, ಕರ್ತ names Christ as the one who will judge the living and the dead (4:1), personally stood with Paul and strengthened him (4:17), and will deliver him into his heavenly kingdom (4:18). Never ಸ್ವಾಮಿ (guru/Lingayat ಜಂಗಮ address); must retain exclusive, presently-reigning sovereignty, not a devotional lord whose follower’s destiny is eventual Aikya-merger.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ
Transliteration: Pavitrātma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. In 2 Timothy, the indwelling ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ enables the guarding of the entrusted deposit (1:14) and grants the spirit of power, love, and a sound mind (1:7). Never ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ (impersonal/monistic Vedantic Universal Self), which would make ‘indwelling guarding’ unintelligible as personal agency.
Father
Approved rendering: ತಂದೆ
Transliteration: Tande
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಕರ್ತ
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Used in 2 Timothy’s epistolary greeting (1:2). Personal, relational, not the abstract ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಕರ್ತ (creator).
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ
Transliteration: nītivantike
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ಧರ್ಮ, ಪುಣ್ಯ
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Governs both ‘instruction in righteousness’ (3:16) and the ‘crown of righteousness’ (4:8). CRITICAL: never ಧರ್ಮ. The 4:8 crown must be presented as consistent with, not contradicting, imputed righteousness by faith.
Salvation
Approved rendering: ರಕ್ಷಣೆ
Transliteration: rakṣaṇe
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ಮೋಕ್ಷ, ಮುಕ್ತಿ, ಐಕ್ಯ
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Scripture’s stated purpose is to make one ‘wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus’ (3:15); echoed in 4:18’s ‘will save/preserve.’ CRITICAL: never ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ/ಐಕ್ಯ.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ
Transliteration: punarutthāna
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. Central to Paul’s gospel summary (2:8) and the specific point denied by Hymenaeus and Philetus (2:18, ‘saying the resurrection is past already’). CRITICAL: never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. See also resurrection_already_past_heresy below for the mandatory-note treatment of the false teaching.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ
Transliteration: āropita nīti
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: ಸ್ವಂತ ಸಾಧನೆಯ ನೀತಿ
Inherited from Romans package. Not directly quoted in 2 Timothy’s text but load-bearing background doctrine: the ‘crown of righteousness’ (4:8) must be interpreted consistently with this Romans 4 doctrine — a credited, given standing, never a self-attained merit resembling the Lingayat shatsthala path’s stage-by-stage ascent.
Resurrection Already Past Heresy
Approved rendering: ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನವು ಆಗಲೇ ಆಗಿಹೋಗಿದೆ ಎಂಬ ತಪ್ಪು ಬೋಧನೆ
Transliteration: punarutthānavu āgalē āgihōgide emba tappu bōdhane
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: τὴν ἀνάστασιν ἤδη γεγονέναι
Category: Apostasy
The named heresy of Hymenaeus and Philetus (2:18), built on the Critical baseline ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ. MANDATORY translator note required at every occurrence, flagging this as condemned error, not a valid allegorical/spiritual reading of resurrection — a distinction Kannada readers from backgrounds where resurrection language is readily assimilated to symbolic/mystical transformation are at particular risk of missing.
Crown Of Righteousness
Approved rendering: ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆಯ ಕಿರೀಟ
Transliteration: nītivantikeya kirīṭa
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Rejected alternatives: ಪುಣ್ಯದ ಕಿರೀಟ, ಫಲದ ಕಿರೀಟ
Original: ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος
Category: Assurance of Reward
Renders ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος (4:8). ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ reuses the baseline’s Critical term exactly. ಪುಣ್ಯ/ಫಲ (karma-merit ledger vocabulary) rejected outright. MANDATORY translator note: this crown is given by the righteous Judge, consistent with, not opposed to, imputed righteousness by grace — never a self-earned merit-payout.
Righteous Judge
Approved rendering: ನೀತಿವಂತನಾದ ನ್ಯಾಯಾಧೀಶ
Transliteration: nītivantanāda nyāyādhīśa
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: ὁ δίκαιος κριτής
Category: Assurance of Reward
Christ’s judicial character (4:8, ὁ δίκαιος κριτής); pairs ನೀತಿವಂತ [BASELINE ROOT] with ಕರ್ತ [BASELINE, Critical]. Ties assurance of reward directly to Christ’s own righteous, sovereign character, not an impersonal cosmic ledger.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: ಕೃಪೆ
Transliteration: kṛpe
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: ಕರ್ಮಫಲ, ಪುಣ್ಯ
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 2 Timothy 1:9 (‘not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace’) is among the strongest anti-merit statements in the whole curriculum; must stand against both the karma-merit economy and the Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic. 2:25 extends grace even to repentance granted to opponents.
Faith
Approved rendering: ನಂಬಿಕೆ
Transliteration: nambike
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ಭಕ್ತಿ
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Recurs across all four chapters of 2 Timothy: unfeigned faith inherited through Lois/Eunice (1:5), ‘faithful saying’ formula (2:11), faithless-yet-God-faithful couplet (2:13), reprobate concerning the faith (3:8), and ‘I have kept the faith’ (4:7). Never ಭಕ್ತಿ.
Called
Approved rendering: ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ
Transliteration: kareyalpaṭṭa
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: ಆಮಂತ್ರಿತ
Inherited from Romans package. In 2 Timothy 1:9, qualifies the ‘holy calling’ given not according to works but according to God’s own purpose and grace.
Calling
Approved rendering: ಕರೆ
Transliteration: kare
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: ಆಹ್ವಾನ
Inherited from Romans package. Combines with ಪವಿತ್ರ to render ‘holy calling’ (1:9), God’s sovereign summons distinguished from the devotee-initiated Lingayat shatsthala path or the Haridasa dasa-adoption pattern.
Holy
Approved rendering: ಪವಿತ್ರ
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ಶುದ್ಧ
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Qualifies ‘calling’ (1:9); its negated form ಅಪವಿತ್ರ renders ‘unholy’/‘profane’ at 2:16 and 3:2, preserving the direct antonym relationship in Kannada as in Greek.
Gospel
Approved rendering: ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ
Transliteration: suvārte
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ಸುದ್ದಿ
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. ‘My gospel’ (2:8) names one specific historical announcement (Christ’s Davidic descent and resurrection) for which Paul suffers as a criminal (1:8, 2:9). Root of the coined term ಸೌವಾರ್ತಿಕ (evangelist).
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: ದಾವೀದನ ವಂಶದಿಂದ
Transliteration: Dāvīdana vaṃśadinda
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: σπέρματος Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Must render identically to Romans 1:3 in 2 Timothy 2:8’s gospel summary, preserving cross-document terminological consistency for this doctrinally load-bearing phrase.
Glory
Approved rendering: ಮಹಿಮೆ
Transliteration: mahime
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ತೇಜಸ್ಸು
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Used in 2 Timothy’s closing doxology (4:18, ‘to whom be glory for ever and ever’). Avoid light-only imagery that could merge with Aikya-adjacent mystical-illumination associations.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: ದೇವರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ / ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ
Transliteration: Dēvara sāmarthya / sāmarthya
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ಶಕ್ತಿ
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Governs ‘the spirit of power’ (1:7) and Paul’s charge to Timothy to suffer ‘according to the power of God’ (1:8). Never ಶಕ್ತಿ — Karnataka’s Shakta tradition (Chamundeshwari at Mysore) makes ಶಕ್ತಿ read as a distinct divine-feminine power.
Providence
Approved rendering: ದೇವರ ಪರಿಪಾಲನೆ
Transliteration: Dēvara Paripālane
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: ಹಣೆಬರಹ, ಕರ್ಮದ ನಿಯಮ
Inherited from Romans package. In 2 Timothy 2:19, ‘the foundation of God stands sure’ despite the Hymenaeus/Philetus error — God’s personal, purposive governance, never impersonal fate or the law of karma.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ
Transliteration: pavitrīkaraṇa
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ಶುದ್ಧೀಕರಣ
Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to 2 Timothy 2:20-21’s vessel imagery: the believer who purges himself becomes ‘sanctified, and meet for the master’s use’ — responsive cooperation with the Spirit’s work, not self-directed shatsthala ascent toward Aikya.
Scripture
Approved rendering: ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥ(ಗಳು)
Transliteration: pavitra grantha(gaḷu)
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: ಗ್ರಂಥ (bare), ವೇದ
Original: ἱερὰ γράμματα / γραφή
Category: Scripture
One consistent phrase for both ἱερὰ γράμματα (3:15) and γραφή (3:16). Must be distinguished from the vachana literature of the Veerashaiva Sharana poet-saints and Haridasa devotional kirtane — both genuinely revered in Karnataka religious memory as inspired wisdom, but neither claims to be God’s own breathed-out word. ವೇದ rejected outright: directly names the rival Hindu Vedic corpus.
God Breathed
Approved rendering: ದೇವರಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತ(ವಾದದ್ದು)
Transliteration: Dēvarinda prērita(vādaddu)
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: ಕಾವ್ಯಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ
Original: θεόπνευστος
Category: Scripture
THE anchor term of the doctrine (3:16, θεόπνευστος, a NT hapax). Must be distinguished with special care from vachana literature, Haridasa kirtane, and the generic Kannada literary notion of ಕಾವ್ಯಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ (‘poetic inspiration’), which denotes aesthetic inspiration, not verbal divine origin. MANDATORY translator note required on first use in every Phase 2 document.
Solemn Charge
Approved rendering: ಆಣೆಯಿಟ್ಟು ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಿಸುವಿಕೆ
Transliteration: āṇeyiṭṭu ājñāpisuvike
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Rejected alternatives: ವಿನಂತಿಸುವುದು (mere request)
Original: διαμαρτύρομαι
Category: Charge to Preach the Word
Renders διαμαρτύρομαι (4:1), opening the epistle’s climactic charge with oath-level, courtroom solemnity, invoking God and Christ Jesus as witnesses. Must never be softened to a friendly request or suggestion.
Judge Living And Dead
Approved rendering: ಜೀವಿತರನ್ನೂ ಸತ್ತವರನ್ನೂ ನ್ಯಾಯತೀರಿಸುವುದು
Transliteration: jīvitarannū sattavarannū nyāyatīrisuvudu
Doctrine: Lordship and Deity of Christ
Original: κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς
Category: Christology
Christ’s comprehensive, universal, eschatological judgeship (4:1). Directly related to the baseline’s Critical ಕರ್ತ (Lord) entry: Christ as universal judge, not one judge among several deities in a devotional pantheon.
Sound Doctrine
Approved rendering: ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ
Transliteration: svastha bōdhane
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Rejected alternatives: ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಬೋಧನೆ, ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ
Original: ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία
Category: Doctrine
THE anchor term of this doctrine (4:3; also 1:13’s ‘sound words’). The medical ‘healthy’ metaphor of ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ must be retained to preserve the health/sickness contrast with 2:17’s gangrene image describing false teaching; a bland ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಬೋಧನೆ (‘good teaching’) would flatten this contrast.
Appearing
Approved rendering: ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆ
Transliteration: pratyakṣate
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: ἐπιφάνεια
Category: Eschatology
Christ’s future, glorious, singular second appearing (4:1, 4:8), ground of both judgment and reward. Must never be assimilated to the recurring, cyclical avatāra-descents of Krishna-bhakti theology (cf. baseline’s Critical flag on ಅವತಾರ for incarnation); this is a single, still-future, decisive event.
Preach
Approved rendering: ಸಾರು
Transliteration: sāru
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Rejected alternatives: ಪ್ರವಚನ
Original: κηρύσσω
Category: Charge to Preach the Word
Renders κηρύσσω (4:2), the central imperative of the charge. ಪ್ರವಚನ rejected: names a genre of religious oratory generally used across Hindu, Haridasa, and Lingayat public teaching, which would equate gospel preaching with one genre of religious discourse among many. ಸಾರು retains the herald’s public, authoritative-announcement register.
The Word
Approved rendering: ವಾಕ್ಯ
Transliteration: vākya
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: ὁ λόγος
Category: Charge to Preach the Word
The object of ‘preach’ (4:2, ὁ λόγος), tied directly to inspired Scripture (3:16) and gospel content, not the preacher’s own opinion. Distinct from λόγος as the Johannine divine Logos.
Reprove Rebuke Exhort
Approved rendering: ಗದರಿಸು, ಖಂಡಿಸು, ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸು
Transliteration: gadarisu, khaṇḍisu, prōtsāhisu
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Rejected alternatives: single blended verb
Original: ἔλεγξον, ἐπιτίμησον, παρακάλεσον
Category: Charge to Preach the Word
Three-part pastoral ministry (4:2): expose/convict of error, rebuke with authority, urge/encourage. ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸು reuses the baseline’s exhort entry. Must be kept as three distinct verbs; a single blended Kannada verb would flatten Paul’s threefold pastoral method.
Endure Hardship
Approved rendering: ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸುವುದು
Transliteration: kaṣṭavannu sahisuvudu
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Rejected alternatives: ತಪಸ್ಸು, ಕರ್ಮಫಲ ಅನುಭವ
Original: κακοπαθέω / συγκακοπαθέω
Category: Perseverance
Central recurring verb (κακοπαθέω/συγκακοπαθέω: 1:8, 2:3, 2:9, 4:5). ತಪಸ್ಸು rejected: imports the Hindu/yogic voluntary-austerity framework, suffering as a chosen technique for merit or power — the opposite of Paul’s grace-grounded, externally-imposed suffering. ಕರ್ಮಫಲ ಅನುಭವ rejected: impersonal cosmic debt-repayment framing.
Good Deposit
Approved rendering: ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪ
Transliteration: oppisalpaṭṭa nikṣēpa
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ವಿಷಯ (loose paraphrase)
Original: παραθήκη
Category: Faithful Transmission
Renders παραθήκη (1:12, 1:14), a technical legal/financial trust-image (‘to be returned intact’). Both occurrences must use the same phrase. MANDATORY translator note on first use, since a looser rendering would lose the custodial force grounding Guarding Sound Doctrine.
Guard
Approved rendering: ಕಾಪಾಡು
Transliteration: kāpāḍu
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: φυλάσσω
Category: Doctrine
Renders φυλάσσω (1:14), the verb paired with the deposit; guarding happens through the indwelling Holy Spirit’s help, not human effort alone.
Entrust
Approved rendering: ಒಪ್ಪಿಸು
Transliteration: oppisu
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ಪರಂಪರೆ (guru-disciple lineage transmission)
Original: παρατίθημι
Category: Faithful Transmission
Verb form of the deposit image (2:2), describing the four-generation chain (Paul→Timothy→faithful people→others also). ಪರಂಪರೆ rejected: an extremely tempting cognate, but loaded with connotations of a living teacher’s personal, evolving authority (guru-śiṣya paramparā) rather than a fixed, checkable content passed on intact.
Immortality
Approved rendering: ಅಮರತ್ವ
Transliteration: amaratva
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Rejected alternatives: ಆತ್ಮದ ಶಾಶ್ವತತ್ವ
Original: ἀφθαρσία
Category: Perseverance
Renders ἀφθαρσία (1:10), brought to light through the gospel alongside life. Must be distinguished from the Vedantic doctrine of an inherently eternal ātman that never truly dies; here immortality is a gift disclosed and secured through Christ’s gospel, linked to ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ, not an innate property of the self.
Rightly Dividing Word Of Truth
Approved rendering: ಸತ್ಯವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬೋಧಿಸುವುದು
Transliteration: satyavākyavannu sariyāgi bōdhisuvudu
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: ὀρθοτομέω τὸν λόγον τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: Doctrine
Renders ὀρθοτομέω τὸν λόγον τῆς ἀληθείας (2:15), the positive counterpart to Hymenaeus and Philetus’s errors; names accurate, careful handling of the deposit of truth.
Profane Vain Babblings
Approved rendering: ಅಪವಿತ್ರ ಹರಟೆ ಮಾತುಗಳು
Transliteration: apavitra haraṭe mātugaḷu
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: βέβηλοι κενοφωνίαι
Category: Doctrine
Renders βέβηλοι κενοφωνίαι (2:16), the negative counterpart to sound doctrine. ಅಪವಿತ್ರ is the direct antonym of the baseline’s ಪವಿತ್ರ (holy), negated.
Foundation Of God
Approved rendering: ದೇವರ ಅಸ್ತಿವಾರ
Transliteration: Dēvara astivāra
Doctrine: Providence
Original: ὁ θεμέλιος τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Providence
The solid, unshaken foundation of God’s purposes (2:19), standing firm despite the Hymenaeus/Philetus error. Must not be reduced to an impersonal cosmic-order metaphor or ಹಣೆಬರಹ fatalism.
Last Days
Approved rendering: ಅಂತ್ಯ ದಿನಗಳು
Transliteration: antya dinagaḷu
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: ἔσχαται ἡμέραι
Category: Apostasy
Central anchor term for the doctrine (3:1). Low risk of confusion with the cyclical yuga-decline schema, but surrounding teaching material should distinguish linear salvation-historical ‘last days’ from the cyclical Kali Yuga moral-decay framework, since the two vice-lists are strikingly similar in content.
Godliness
Approved rendering: ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ
Transliteration: daivabhakti
Doctrine: Godliness and Authentic vs. Empty Religious Form
Rejected alternatives: ಭಕ್ತಿ (bare), ಧರ್ಮನಿಷ್ಠೆ, ಪೂಜ್ಯಭಾವ
Original: εὐσέβεια
Category: Apostasy
MAJOR RISK FLAG — the single highest-collision-risk term in the whole curriculum. Bare ಭಕ್ತಿ is the natural, unmarked Kannada word for devotional piety in both Haridasa Krishna-bhakti and Lingayat Shiva-devotion; since 3:5 itself warns of an empty ‘form of godliness,’ bare ಭಕ್ತಿ is exactly the word a reader’s own devotional tradition would supply as either the form itself or, worse, mistaken for the substance. ಧರ್ಮನಿಷ್ಠೆ rejected outright: contains the forbidden ಧರ್ಮ root. MANDATORY translator note required at every occurrence (3:5, 3:12).
Form Of Godliness
Approved rendering: ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಬಾಹ್ಯರೂಪ, ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಗಳೆಯುವುದು
Transliteration: daivabhaktiya bāhyarūpa, ādare adara sāmarthyavannu allagaḷeyuvudu
Doctrine: Godliness and Authentic vs. Empty Religious Form
Original: μόρφωσις εὐσεβείας
Category: Apostasy
Renders μόρφωσις εὐσεβείας… τὴν δὲ δύναμιν αὐτῆς ἠρνημένοι (3:5). ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ reused per the power-of-God rule (never ಶಕ್ತಿ). Combined with ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ, the single most doctrinally sensitive phrase in the curriculum for a Kannada-speaking, Karnataka context.
Poured Out As Drink Offering
Approved rendering: ಪಾನಬಲಿಯಾಗಿ ಸುರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವುದು
Transliteration: pānabaliyāgi surisalpaḍuvudu
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Rejected alternatives: generic ನೈವೇದ್ಯ/ಹೋಮ ritual-offering vocabulary
Original: σπένδομαι
Category: Assurance of Reward
Renders σπένδομαι (4:6); Paul frames his impending martyrdom as a sacrificial offering. Carries some risk of resonance with Hindu puja-offering categories (naivedya, homa); must retain the specific ‘a life poured out’ sense tied concretely to Paul’s own life and death, not a generic ritual act.
Fought Good Fight Triad
Approved rendering: ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಹೋರಾಟವನ್ನು ಹೋರಾಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ, ಓಟವನ್ನು ಮುಗಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ, ನಂಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ
Transliteration: śrēṣṭha hōrāṭavannu hōrāḍiddēne, ōṭavannu mugisiddēne, nambikeyannu kāpāḍiddēne
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα ἠγώνισμαι, τὸν δρόμον τετέλεκα, τὴν πίστιν τετήρηκα
Category: Assurance of Reward
The central summary verse of the doctrine (4:7). ನಂಬಿಕೆ (faith) reuses the baseline’s High-risk term exactly.
Love His Appearing
Approved rendering: ಆತನ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುವುದು
Transliteration: ātana pratyakṣateyannu prītisuvudu
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: πᾶσι τοῖς ἠγαπηκόσι τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ
Category: Assurance of Reward
Universalizes the crown’s promise to all believers who long for Christ’s return (4:8), not to Paul alone. ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆ carries the same avatāra-distinction risk noted at 4:1.
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: ಶಾಂತಿ
Transliteration: śānti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: ಮನಶ್ಶಾಂತಿ
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Part of 2 Timothy 1:2’s greeting triad (grace, mercy, peace). Relational peace with God, not ಮನಶ್ಶಾಂತಿ (bhakti/meditative inner tranquility).
Apostle
Approved rendering: ಅಪೊಸ್ತಲ
Transliteration: apostala
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: ಗುರು, ಜಂಗಮ
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Grounds Paul’s authority for the charge of 2 Timothy 4:1-5 (1:1, 1:11). Never ಗುರು or ಜಂಗಮ.
Kingdom Of God

Transliteration: Dēvara Rājya / ātana rājya
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. ‘His kingdom’ at Christ’s appearing (4:1) and ‘heavenly kingdom’ as the believer’s destination (4:18, qualified with ಪರಲೋಕ). Not a territorial or political kingdom.
David
Approved rendering: ದಾವೀದ
Transliteration: Dāvīda
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Established proper name form, embedded in ದಾವೀದನ ವಂಶದಿಂದ (seed of David, 2:8).
Church
Approved rendering: ಸಭೆ
Transliteration: sabhe
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ, ಗುಡಿ
Inherited from Romans package. Background term for 2 Timothy’s household-of-God imagery (2:19-21) and the many named fellow-workers of the closing greetings (4:9-21). Never ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ/ಗುಡಿ.
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ವರಗಳು
Transliteration: ātmika varagaḷu
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Rejected alternatives: ವರ, ಸಿದ್ಧಿ
Inherited from Romans package. Retained for contrast: 2 Timothy 1:6’s singular χάρισμα (‘gift of God’ given to Timothy) is a different, singular instance and must use ದೇವರ ವರ (qualified), never bare ವರ, per the same safeguard this baseline entry already establishes for the plural doctrinal category.
Mercy
Approved rendering: ಕರುಣೆ
Transliteration: karuṇe
Doctrine: Grace
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Salvation
New to 2 Timothy’s greeting triad (grace, mercy, peace, 1:2), also sought for Onesiphorus’s household (1:16, 1:18). Standard Kannada Christian vocabulary; kept distinct from ಕೃಪೆ (grace) rather than used interchangeably, since Paul deliberately triples the greeting.
Doctrine
Approved rendering: ಬೋಧನೆ
Transliteration: bōdhane
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Rejected alternatives: ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ
Original: διδασκαλία
Category: Doctrine
Base noun; qualified as ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ for ‘sound doctrine’ (4:3). ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ rejected: carries strong darshana-school/philosophical-system connotation, risking Christian doctrine read as one of Karnataka’s many competing philosophical systems. ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ rejected: overlaps with the baseline’s excluded ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ register.
Man Of God
Approved rendering: ದೇವರ ಮನುಷ್ಯ
Transliteration: Dēvara manuṣya
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Original: ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος
Category: Scripture
OT prophetic-office phrase (Moses, Elijah) applied to Timothy/every minister (3:17). Names full belonging to and equipping by God for ministry, not a self-attained teaching status.
Complete
Approved rendering: ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ
Transliteration: sampūrṇa
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Original: ἄρτιος
Category: Scripture
Renders ἄρτιος (3:17). Must not be rendered with a term implying moral perfectionism achieved by self-effort, which would collide with the Lingayat shatsthala self-attainment risk already flagged for imputed righteousness; this is Scripture-given adequacy, not self-cultivated attainment.
In Season Out Of Season
Approved rendering: ಅನುಕೂಲ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಾಗಲಿ ಅನಾನುಕೂಲ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಾಗಲಿ
Transliteration: anukūla kāladallāgali anānukūla kāladallāgali
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως
Category: Charge to Preach the Word
Merism (4:2, εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως) meaning total, unconditional ministry readiness. Avoid idiomatic translation that loses the ‘regardless of cost/convenience’ force.
Longsuffering
Approved rendering: ದೀರ್ಘಶಾಂತಿ
Transliteration: dīrghaśānti
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: μακροθυμία
Category: Charge to Preach the Word
Governs how correction is delivered (4:2, μακροθυμία). Distinguish from ಶಾಂತಿ (baseline’s peace-with-God doctrine) — this is patient forbearance in ministry, though the root is shared.
Will Not Endure Sound Doctrine
Approved rendering: ಸಹಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ
Transliteration: sahisuvudilla
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: οὐκ ἀνέξονται
Category: Apostasy

Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days

Category: Apostasy
A vivid image (4:3) of accumulating teachers selected to please rather than correct; names a consumer-driven religious market.
Itching Ears
Approved rendering: ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಇಂಪಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿಸುವಂಥದ್ದನ್ನೇ ಬಯಸುವುದು
Transliteration: kivige impāgi kēḷisuvanthaddannē bayasuvudu
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: ಕಿವಿ ಕೆರೆತ (literal ear-itch calque)
Original: κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν
Category: Apostasy
Idiom (4:3, κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν) rendered by natural Kannada descriptive equivalent per the requirements doc’s idiom-handling rule; a literal calque would be opaque.
Truth
Approved rendering: ಸತ್ಯ
Transliteration: satya
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Apostasy
Doctrinally load-bearing as the antonym of ‘myths/fables’ (4:4).
Evangelist
Approved rendering: ಸೌವಾರ್ತಿಕ
Transliteration: sauvārtika
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Rejected alternatives: ಇವಾಂಜಲಿಸ್ಟ್ (unrelated loanword)
Original: εὐαγγελιστής
Category: Charge to Preach the Word
Coined transparently from ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ (gospel) [BASELINE ROOT] to preserve the visible link between the office and the message it proclaims (4:5), an advantage over an unrelated loanword.
Fables Myths
Approved rendering: ಕಟ್ಟುಕಥೆಗಳು
Transliteration: kaṭṭukathegaḷu
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: μῦθοι
Category: Apostasy
Renders μῦθοι (4:4). Should not be rendered with a term that reads as a blanket dismissal of Kannada purana/itihasa narrative literature; the point is fabrication set against revealed truth, not disparagement of all non-biblical story literature.
Make Full Proof
Approved rendering: ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ನೆರವೇರಿಸುವುದು
Transliteration: sampūrṇavāgi neravērisuvudu
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word

Transliteration: punaḥ prajvalisu
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Original: ἀναζωπυρέω

Transliteration: sāmarthya, prīti mattu svasthabuddhiya ātma
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Rejected alternatives: ಶಕ್ತಿ
Original: πνεῦμα δυνάμεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ σωφρονισμοῦ

Transliteration: nāchikepaḍu
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Original: ἐπαισχύνομαι
Category: Perseverance
Recurs three times (1:8, 1:12, 1:16) as the counter-posture to fear; consistent rendering preserves the epistle’s repeated pattern.

Transliteration: saitānana bale
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: παγὶς τοῦ διαβόλου

Transliteration: kaṭhiṇa kālagaḷu

Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: ಮಾಟಗಾರ
