Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — Gospel of John (English → Kannada)
Purpose
This document is the PRD Phase 1 Step 4 deliverable: a full doctrine matrix spanning every chapter of the Gospel of John (1–21), built to be fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (same 25 doctrines, identical risk tiers, identical kannada_doctrine_name values). It extends the registry with (a) complete per-doctrine supporting-passage lists drawn from the whole book, not just the registry’s representative selection, and (b) an explicit chapter-by-chapter coverage table so that no chapter is silently passed over, per the FULL-BOOK COVERAGE mandate. The core passage, John 3:1–21, anchors the New Birth, Judgment, and God’s Love for the World doctrines but is not the boundary of scope.
Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline Romans convention exactly:
| Tier | Review routing |
|---|---|
| Critical | Human theologian — every occurrence |
| High | Human theologian |
| Medium | Native speaker review |
| Low | Automated review |
Part 1 — Doctrine Matrix (Full Book)
1. The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Kannada doctrine name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇವತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವ — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 1:1–3, 1:14, 1:18, 5:18, 8:24, 8:58, 10:30, 10:33, 12:41, 17:5, 17:24, 20:28
- Translation risk: ವಾಕ್ಯ (Logos) at 1:1 risks assimilation to Vāc/Śabda-Brahman, the impersonal eternal cosmic Word/Sound of Vedic and Kashmir Śaiva metaphysics; every occurrence in ch.1 must retain the personal-pronoun, relational anchoring (“with God,” “was God”) to block a monistic reading. The absolute ನಾನೇ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ at 8:58 must preserve the tense contrast with Abraham’s past “was” (γενέσθαι vs. εἰμί) so that timeless self-existence is not softened into “I existed before Abraham” (a merely elevated-personage claim).
- Review routing: Human theologian
2. Incarnation of the Word
Kannada doctrine name: ವಾಕ್ಯದ ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 1:14, 1:1–3, 3:13, 6:51, 6:62
- Translation risk: NEVER ಅವತಾರ. Especially salient for readers formed by coastal Karnataka’s Haridasa Krishna-bhakti tradition (Udupi). Lingayat-background readers who already reject avatar theology carry a distinct risk of instead receiving Christ as an exceptionally realized human Sharana figure who attained Aikya, rather than the eternal, uncreated Son permanently and uniquely assuming flesh.
- Review routing: Human theologian
3. Sonship of Christ
Kannada doctrine name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 1:14, 1:18, 1:34, 1:49, 3:16, 3:18, 3:35–36, 5:19–26, 10:36, 11:4, 11:27, 19:7, 20:31
- Translation risk: ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ (only-begotten/unique Son) must not be diluted into an honorary title conferred on an especially devoted or elevated figure (the closest Lingayat category being a Sharana who reached Aikya), nor read as one of Vishnu’s many Krishna-avataras in Haridasa devotional expectation. The uniqueness (“the one and only”), not mere biological “begotten-ness,” is the load-bearing sense.
- Review routing: Human theologian
4. Son of Man Title / Christ’s Human-Divine Authority
Kannada doctrine name: ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರನ ಬಿರುದು — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 1:51, 3:13–14, 5:27, 6:27, 6:53, 6:62, 8:28, 9:35, 12:23, 12:34, 13:31
- Translation risk: ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರ has no ready Kannada devotional equivalent. If flattened to “a mere human being” it loses the Daniel 7 exalted-judge background feeding the Judgment doctrine (5:27); if collapsed indistinguishably into “Son of God” it loses Christ’s deliberate self-identification with humanity and the incarnational thread from ch.1 and ch.3.
- Review routing: Human theologian
5. The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Kannada doctrine name: ಹೊಸ ಜನ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಆತ್ಮನಿಂದ ಪುನರುಜ್ಜೀವನ — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 1:12–13, 3:3–8, 3:36
- Translation risk: NEVER ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (samsaric reincarnation) for “born again.” Must also resist a reading as incremental self-advancement through the Lingayat shatsthala stages. The πνεῦμα/wind pun (ಗಾಳಿ vs. ಆತ್ಮ/ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, 3:8) is untranslatable directly into Kannada and requires an explanatory translator note preserving the sovereign, free, personal work of the Spirit rather than an impersonal natural force.
- Review routing: Human theologian
6. Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Kannada doctrine name: ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 1:4, 3:15–16, 3:36, 4:14, 4:36, 5:24, 5:39–40, 6:27, 6:33, 6:35, 6:40, 6:47, 6:51, 6:53–58, 6:68, 8:12, 10:10, 10:28, 11:25–26, 12:25, 12:50, 17:2–3, 20:31
- Translation risk: ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ uses ಜೀವ (jīva), the Vedantic/Jain technical term for the individual embodied soul bound in samsara awaiting moksha/mukti. Readers may quietly reinterpret “eternal life” as liberation of the jiva from rebirth rather than the relational, personal, present-possessed life Christ defines at 17:3 — knowing the Father and the Son — never a moksha-style dissolution or release.
- Review routing: Human theologian
7. God’s Love for the World
Kannada doctrine name: ಲೋಕಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ದೇವರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ — Risk: High
- Supporting passages: John 3:16–17, 3:19 (implied contrast), 4:42, 12:47, 14:31, 17:23, 17:26 (extended to believers), 21 (implied pastoral outworking)
- Translation risk: ಲೋಕ (kosmos) also names one cosmological realm/plane among several in Hindu cosmology and can carry māyā (illusion-to-be-transcended) associations. ಪ್ರೀತಿ here is unilateral, initiating divine love, distinguished from the devotee-initiated, exchange-structured prema of Haridasa Krishna-bhakti, where the deity’s favor answers the devotee’s approach rather than precedes and creates it.
- Review routing: Human theologian
8. Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Kannada doctrine name: ತೀರ್ಪು ಮತ್ತು ನಂಬಿಕೆ/ಅಪನಂಬಿಕೆ — Risk: High
- Supporting passages: John 3:18–21, 3:36, 5:22–30, 8:15–16, 8:24, 9:39–41, 12:31, 12:47–48, 16:8–11
- Translation risk: John’s “already judged” present-tense verdict (3:18) must be read as a personal divine verdict grounded in relationship to Christ, not the impersonal, automatic working-out of karma — a live explanatory substitute in everyday Kannada speech for “why things happen.” Light/darkness vocabulary shared with Doctrine 23 below reinforces this: unbelief is willed moral rejection, not mere ignorance.
- Review routing: Human theologian
9. The Seven “I Am” Statements
Kannada doctrine name: ಏಳು “ನಾನೇ” ಹೇಳಿಕೆಗಳು — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 6:35 (bread of life), 6:48, 6:51; 8:12 (light of the world), 9:5; 10:7, 10:9 (door); 10:11, 10:14 (good shepherd); 11:25 (resurrection and life); 14:6 (way, truth, life); 15:1, 15:5 (true vine); cf. absolute uses 6:20, 8:24, 8:28, 8:58, 13:19, 18:5–8
- Translation risk: Each predicated “I am” statement echoes the absolute ἐγώ εἰμι of 8:58 (itself echoing Exodus 3:14 LXX). Rendered as ordinary self-description rather than identity-claims of the eternal God, the cumulative deity-claim structuring the whole Gospel collapses. The 14:6 exclusivity clause (“no one comes to the Father except through me”) is especially sensitive given the honored status of multiple mārga (paths) in Kannada religious vocabulary and must not be softened.
- Review routing: Human theologian
10. The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Kannada doctrine name: ಸಹಾಯಕನಾದ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 3:5–8 (background), 7:37–39, 14:16–17, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7–15, 20:22
- Translation risk: Παράκλητος rendered alone as a generic “helper/guide” risks two distinct collisions: reduction to a guru-like advisor (paralleling the baseline’s rejection of ಗುರು for “apostle”), or resonance with coastal-Karnataka Tulunadu Bhuta Kola folk religion, in which ಭೂತ spirits are propitiated as intermediary helper-beings subordinate to high gods. ಸಹಾಯಕನಾದ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ must always pair with the baseline’s established ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ to keep the Spirit’s full, personal, divine, Trinitarian status unmistakable.
- Review routing: Human theologian
11. Unity of the Father and the Son
Kannada doctrine name: ತಂದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಗನ ಏಕತೆ — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 5:18–23, 8:19, 10:30, 10:33, 10:38, 12:45, 14:7–11, 14:20, 17:11, 17:21–23
- Translation risk: “ನಾನೂ ತಂದೆಯೂ ಒಂದೇ” (10:30) names an eternal, already-existing unity of essence between two eternally distinct Persons and must not be assimilated to the Veerashaiva Aikya state, in which the devotee’s individual identity is progressively dissolved into and merged with Shiva as the culmination of the shatsthala path. Believers’ derivative unity (17:21–23) is relational and Spirit-given, categorically distinct from the Father-Son unity it is modeled on — never identity-dissolving.
- Review routing: Human theologian
12. Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Kannada doctrine name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿ ಮರಣ ಮತ್ತು ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 1:29, 1:36, 3:14–15, 10:11, 10:15, 10:17–18, 11:49–52, 12:23–24, 12:32–33, 13:1, 18:11, 19:16–37, 19:30, 20:1–29
- Translation risk: ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ must never be rendered ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. The “lifted up” double meaning (crucifixion IS exaltation, ὑψόω) must be rendered identically at all three occurrences (3:14, 8:28, 12:32–34) or the Johannine narrative thread breaks. “ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಯಿತು” (19:30) must convey a completed, once-for-all atoning work, not an ongoing/repeatable ritual process or the incremental, stage-by-stage self-effort of the Lingayat shatsthala path toward right standing.
- Review routing: Human theologian
13. Testimony and Witness to Christ
Kannada doctrine name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕುರಿತ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ — Risk: High
- Supporting passages: John 1:6–8, 1:15, 1:19–34, 3:26–30, 5:31–39, 8:13–18, 10:25, 15:26–27, 19:35, 20:30–31, 21:24
- Translation risk: John the Baptist’s deliberately subordinate witness role — and his refusal of a Rabbi-guru-like independent authority (“he must increase, I must decrease,” 3:30) — must not be read through the lens of a self-attained teaching-guru status. ರಬ್ಬಿ is retained as a transliteration rather than ಗುರುವೇ throughout to avoid importing that framework.
- Review routing: Human theologian
14. Messianic Promise Fulfilled in Christ
Kannada doctrine name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆರವೇರಿದ ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯನ ವಾಗ್ದಾನ — Risk: Critical
- Supporting passages: John 1:20, 1:25, 1:41, 1:45, 1:49, 4:25–26, 4:29, 4:42, 6:14–15, 7:26–27, 7:31, 7:40–42, 11:27, 12:13–15, 20:31
- Translation risk: ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯ (transliterated, baseline reuse) must remain the unique OT-promised deliverer. Readers formed by Haridasa Krishna-avatara expectation may be tempted to receive Jesus’s messianic identity as one arrival among a series of divine descents rather than the single, unrepeatable fulfillment John consistently presses (e.g., “we have found the Messiah,” 1:41, stated as a completed discovery, not an ongoing series).
- Review routing: Human theologian
15. Universal Scope of the Gospel in John
Kannada doctrine name: ಸುವಾರ್ತೆಯ ಸಾರ್ವತ್ರಿಕತೆ — Risk: High
- Supporting passages: John 1:12, 1:29, 3:16, 4:1–42, 4:39–42, 7:35 (implied dispersion among the Greeks), 10:16, 11:51–52, 12:20–24, 12:32
- Translation risk: Christ’s crossing of Jewish-Samaritan hostility (ch.4) and his declared “other sheep” (10:16) parallel the baseline’s documented resonance with — yet doctrinal distinction from — the historic Lingayat rejection of caste hierarchy. Retain the unqualified universality of “whoever believes” without softening or narrowing it to an in-group.
- Review routing: Human theologian
16. Kingdom of God / Kingship of Christ
Kannada doctrine name: ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಅರಸೊತ್ತಿಗೆ — Risk: Medium
- Supporting passages: John 3:3, 3:5, 12:13–15 (implied kingship acclamation), 18:33–37, 19:19–22
- Translation risk: “ನನ್ನ ರಾಜ್ಯವು ಈ ಲೋಕದ್ದಲ್ಲ” (18:36) must be read as a real but non-political, non-territorial reign, not a claim ceding kingship to a merely spiritual/inward realm equivalent to Advaitic inward liberation detached from any historical or bodily claim — Pilate’s placard (19:19–22) insists on a real, if misunderstood, kingship.
- Review routing: Native speaker review
17. Discipleship and the Love Command
Kannada doctrine name: ಶಿಷ್ಯತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಆಜ್ಞೆ — Risk: Medium
- Supporting passages: John 13:1–17, 13:34–35, 14:15, 14:21, 15:12–17, 21:15–17
- Translation risk: Christ’s self-giving love is the pattern and source of the “new commandment,” not an independently achievable ethical discipline. Foot-washing humility (13:1–17) should not be assimilated to the Lingayat kayaka sacred-labor ethic as itself the ground of standing before God, even though the this-worldly, dignity-of-service overlap is real and may be used pastorally as a bridge.
- Review routing: Native speaker review
18. Freedom in Christ
Kannada doctrine name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ — Risk: High
- Supporting passages: John 8:31–36
- Translation risk: ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ (freedom) must be distinguished from ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ, already forbidden in the baseline for “salvation” as liberation from the rebirth cycle. This freedom is Christ-given release from sin’s mastery, received by abiding in his word (8:31), not a self-achieved liberation attained through ascetic or yogic discipline.
- Review routing: Human theologian
19. Worship in Spirit and Truth
Kannada doctrine name: ಆತ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಆರಾಧನೆ — Risk: Medium
- Supporting passages: John 4:19–24
- Translation risk: Must not be read as endorsing a generic, place-independent inward devotion compatible with any chosen object (a reading some Advaitic and bhakti frameworks might welcome). ἐν ἀληθείᾳ ties true worship specifically to the truth revealed in and by Christ (cf. 14:6), not a formless interiority open to any deity or path.
- Review routing: Native speaker review
20. Assurance and Victory in Christ
Kannada doctrine name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಭರವಸೆ ಮತ್ತು ಜಯ — Risk: High
- Supporting passages: John 6:39, 10:28–29, 16:33, 17:11–12, 17:15
- Translation risk: The believer’s security rests in Christ’s already-accomplished victory (perfect tense νενίκηκα, 16:33) and the Father’s/Son’s unbreakable grip (10:28–29), not the uncertain, incremental progress of the Lingayat shatsthala path, where advancement toward Aikya remains a matter of ongoing personal attainment rather than a settled, gifted status.
- Review routing: Human theologian
21. Shepherding Ministry and the Church
Kannada doctrine name: ಕುರುಬನ ಸೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಭೆ — Risk: Medium
- Supporting passages: John 10:1–18, 10:27–29, 21:15–17
- Translation risk: Peter’s (and by extension every minister’s) shepherding role must be presented as derivative and accountable to Christ the one Good Shepherd (10:11, 10:14), not an independent guru-like teaching office analogous to the wandering Lingayat ಜಂಗಮ office.
- Review routing: Native speaker review
22. Forgiveness of Sins through Christ’s Authority
Kannada doctrine name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಅಧಿಕಾರದಿಂದ ಪಾಪಕ್ಷಮೆ — Risk: Medium
- Supporting passages: John 20:22–23
- Translation risk: The disciples’ authority to declare forgiveness is wholly derivative, grounded in Christ’s already-finished atoning work (19:30) and the just-given Holy Spirit (20:22), not an independent human power to absolve sin by ritual performance or merit accumulation.
- Review routing: Native speaker review
23. Light and Darkness
Kannada doctrine name: ಬೆಳಕು ಮತ್ತು ಕತ್ತಲೆ — Risk: High
- Supporting passages: John 1:4–9, 3:19–21, 8:12, 9:5, 9:39–41, 11:9–10, 12:35–36, 12:46
- Translation risk: Darkness in John is a morally culpable, willed preference (“people loved darkness because their deeds were evil,” 3:19), not the intellectual/spiritual ignorance (avidya) dispelled by gnosis in Advaitic frameworks. Light is the person of Christ confronting the world, not an impersonal illuminating principle or generic devotional divine-light (jyoti) imagery.
- Review routing: Human theologian
24. Living Water and New Life
Kannada doctrine name: ಜೀವಜಲ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ಜೀವನ — Risk: Medium
- Supporting passages: John 3:5 (background), 4:10–14, 7:37–39, 19:34 (blood and water, related typology)
- Translation risk: “ಜೀವಜಲ” (living water) names Spirit-given inner life and must not be assimilated to sacred-river or ritual-bathing purification practices prevalent in regional religious life. The Spirit given is the same ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ already established in the glossary, tied explicitly by the narrator (7:39) to Christ’s own future glorification.
- Review routing: Native speaker review
25. Signs Revealing Christ’s Identity
Kannada doctrine name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಗುರುತನ್ನು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸುವ ಸೂಚಕಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು — Risk: Medium
- Supporting passages: John 2:1–11, 2:23, 4:46–54, 6:2, 6:14, 6:26, 9:1–16, 11:1–44, 11:47, 12:18, 12:37, 20:30–31, 21:1–14 (implied)
- Translation risk: σημεῖα are revelatory pointers to Christ’s divine identity, not a bare power-display comparable to a yogic siddhi (attained power) or an isolated wonder sought for its own sake. John’s own purpose statement (20:30–31) ties the signs directly to faith unto eternal life, and this framing must govern every occurrence.

Critical Risk Doctrines
The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇವತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವ
Key terms: word_logos, god, i_am_absolute, equal_with_god, before_foundation_world
Review routing: Human theologian
ವಾಕ್ಯ (Logos) risks collision with the Vāc/Śabda-Brahman tradition (the eternal cosmic Word/Sound as an impersonal ultimate ground of reality in Vedic and Kashmir Śaiva thought); every occurrence in ch.1 must be anchored by its personal-pronoun context. The absolute ನಾನೇ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ (8:58) claim must preserve the tense contrast with Abraham’s past ‘was’ so timeless self-existence is not smoothed into a merely elevated human past.
Incarnation of the Word
Kannada name: ವಾಕ್ಯದ ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ
Key terms: word_logos, incarnation, flesh, son_of_man
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: NEVER ಅವತಾರ, especially salient for readers formed by coastal Karnataka’s Haridasa Krishna-bhakti tradition centered at Udupi. A distinct risk applies to Lingayat-background readers, who themselves reject avatar theology: they may instead receive Christ as an exceptionally realized human Sharana figure who attained Aikya rather than the eternal, uncreated Son taking on flesh once.
Sonship of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ
Key terms: son_of_god, only_begotten, father
Review routing: Human theologian
ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ (only-begotten/unique Son) must not be diluted into an honorary title bestowed on an elevated devotee (a Sharana who attained Aikya) or read as one of Vishnu’s many avatars in Haridasa devotional theology; the uniqueness, not mere ‘begottenness,’ is load-bearing.
Son of Man / Christ’s Human-Divine Authority
Kannada name: ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರನ ಬಿರುದು
Key terms: son_of_man
Review routing: Human theologian
ಮನುಷ್ಯಕುಮಾರ has no ready Kannada devotional equivalent; if flattened to ‘a mere human being’ it loses the Daniel 7 exalted-judge background essential to the Judgment doctrine, and if collapsed indistinguishably into ‘Son of God’ it loses Christ’s deliberate self-identification with humanity.
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Kannada name: ಹೊಸ ಜನ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಆತ್ಮನಿಂದ ಪುನರುಜ್ಜೀವನ
Key terms: born_again, wind_spirit_wordplay, water_living_water, flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: must never use ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ, Kannada’s standard word for samsaric reincarnation; must also not be read as incremental self-advancement through the Lingayat shatsthala stages. The Greek πνεῦμα/wind pun (ಗಾಳಿ vs ಆತ್ಮ) is untranslatable directly and requires an explanatory note to preserve the sovereign, free, personal work of the Spirit rather than an impersonal force.
Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Kannada name: ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ
Key terms: eternal_life, faith, resurrection_and_life
Review routing: Human theologian
ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ uses ಜೀವ (jīva), the very Vedantic/Jain technical term for the individual soul bound in samsara awaiting moksha; readers may quietly reinterpret ‘eternal life’ as liberation of the jiva rather than the relational, personal, present-possessed life defined at 17:3 as knowing the Father and the Son.
The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Kannada name: ಏಳು “ನಾನೇ” ಹೇಳಿಕೆಗಳು
Key terms: bread_of_life, light_of_world, door_gate, good_shepherd, resurrection_and_life, way_truth_life, true_vine, i_am_absolute
Review routing: Human theologian
Each predicated ‘I am’ statement echoes the absolute ἐγώ εἰμι of 8:58 (itself echoing Exodus 3:14’s divine name); if rendered as ordinary self-description rather than as identity-claims of the eternal God, the cumulative deity-claim structuring the whole Gospel is lost. The 14:6 exclusivity clause (‘no one comes to the Father except through me’) is especially sensitive given the honored status of multiple mārga (paths) in Kannada religious vocabulary.
The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Kannada name: ಸಹಾಯಕನಾದ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ
Key terms: counselor_paraclete, spirit_of_truth, convict_expose, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
Παράκλητος rendered alone as a generic ‘helper/guide’ risks two distinct collisions: reduction to a guru-like advisor (cf. baseline’s rejection of ಗುರು for apostle), or resonance with coastal-Karnataka Tulunadu Bhuta Kola folk religion, where ಭೂತ spirits are propitiated as intermediary helper-beings subordinate to high gods. ಸಹಾಯಕನಾದ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ must always pair with the baseline’s ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ to keep the Spirit’s full, personal, divine status unmistakable.
Unity of the Father and the Son
Kannada name: ತಂದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಗನ ಏಕತೆ
Key terms: father_son_one, seen_me_seen_father, equal_with_god, equal_honor_son_father, believers_one_as_we_one
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: ‘ನಾನೂ ತಂದೆಯೂ ಒಂದೇ’ (I and the Father are one) names an eternal, already-existing unity of essence between two eternally distinct Persons, and must not be assimilated to the Veerashaiva Aikya state, in which the devotee’s individual identity is progressively dissolved into and merged with Shiva as the culmination of the shatsthala path. Believers’ derivative unity (17:21-23) is relational and Spirit-given, not identity-dissolving.
Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿ ಮರಣ ಮತ್ತು ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ
Key terms: lamb_of_god, lifted_up, lay_down_life, one_man_die_for_people, it_is_finished, resurrection, resurrection_and_life
Review routing: Human theologian
ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ must never be rendered ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ; the ‘lifted up’ double meaning (crucifixion IS exaltation) must be rendered identically at all three occurrences (3:14, 8:28, 12:32-34) or the Johannine thread is broken. ‘ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಯಿತು’ (it is finished) must convey a completed, once-for-all atoning work, not an ongoing or repeatable process comparable to the incremental, stage-by-stage self-effort of the Lingayat shatsthala path toward right standing.
Messianic Promise Fulfilled in Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆರವೇರಿದ ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯನ ವಾಗ್ದಾನ
Key terms: messiah, son_of_man
Review routing: Human theologian
ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯ (transliterated, baseline reuse) must remain the unique OT-promised deliverer; readers formed by Haridasa Krishna-avatara expectation may be tempted to receive Jesus’s messianic identity as one arrival among a series of divine descents rather than the single, unrepeatable fulfillment John presents.
High Risk Doctrines
God’s Love for the World
Kannada name: ಲೋಕಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ದೇವರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ
Key terms: world_kosmos, agape_love, only_begotten
Review routing: Human theologian
ಲೋಕ (kosmos) also names one cosmological realm/plane among several in Hindu cosmology and can carry māyā (illusion-to-be-transcended) associations. ಪ್ರೀತಿ here is unilateral, initiating divine love, which must be distinguished from the devotee-initiated, exchange-structured prema of Haridasa Krishna-bhakti, in which the deity’s favor responds to the devotee’s approach.
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Kannada name: ತೀರ್ಪು ಮತ್ತು ನಂಬಿಕೆ/ಅಪನಂಬಿಕೆ
Key terms: judge_judgment, wrath_of_god, light_darkness, disobey, perish
Review routing: Human theologian
John’s ‘already judged’ present-tense verdict must be read as a personal divine verdict grounded in relationship to Christ, not the impersonal, automatic working-out of karma — a live substitute framework in everyday Kannada explanatory speech for why things happen to people.
Testimony and Witness to Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕುರಿತ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ
Key terms: testimony_witness, sign_semeion, rabbi
Review routing: Human theologian
John the Baptist’s subordinate witness role (and his refusal of a ‘Rabbi’-guru-like independent authority, 1:20; 3:27-30) must not be read through the lens of a self-attained teaching-guru status; ರಬ್ಬಿ is retained as a transliteration rather than ಗುರುವೇ to avoid importing that framework.
Universal Scope of the Gospel in John
Kannada name: ಸುವಾರ್ತೆಯ ಸಾರ್ವತ್ರಿಕತೆ
Key terms: world_kosmos, savior_of_world, gentiles, samaritans
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s crossing of Jewish-Samaritan hostility and his declared ‘other sheep’ (10:16) parallel the baseline’s documented resonance with (yet doctrinal distinction from) the historic Lingayat rejection of caste hierarchy; retain the unqualified universality of ‘whoever believes’ without softening.
Freedom in Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ
Key terms: freedom, truth_aletheia, sin
Review routing: Human theologian
ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ (freedom) must be distinguished from ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ, liberation from the rebirth cycle already forbidden in the baseline for ‘salvation’; this freedom is Christ-given release from sin’s mastery received by abiding in his word, not a self-achieved liberation attained through spiritual discipline.
Assurance and Victory in Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಭರವಸೆ ಮತ್ತು ಜಯ
Key terms: overcome_world, abide, eternal_life
Review routing: Human theologian
The believer’s security rests in Christ’s already-accomplished victory (perfect tense νενίκηκα) and the Father’s/Son’s grip (10:28-29), not the uncertain, incremental progress of the Lingayat shatsthala path where advancement toward Aikya remains a matter of ongoing attainment rather than a settled, gifted status.
Light and Darkness
Kannada name: ಬೆಳಕು ಮತ್ತು ಕತ್ತಲೆ
Key terms: light_darkness, light_of_world, truth_aletheia
Review routing: Human theologian
Darkness in John is a morally culpable, willed preference (‘people loved darkness because their deeds were evil,’ 3:19), not the intellectual/spiritual ignorance (avidya) dispelled by gnosis in Advaitic frameworks, nor mere unenlightenment; light is the person of Christ confronting the world, not an impersonal illuminating principle or generic devotional divine-light (jyoti) imagery.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Kingdom of God / Kingship of Christ
Kannada name: ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಅರಸೊತ್ತಿಗೆ
Key terms: kingdom_of_god, kingdom_not_of_world
Review routing: Native speaker review
‘ನನ್ನ ರಾಜ್ಯವು ಈ ಲೋಕದ್ದಲ್ಲ’ must be read as a real but non-political, non-territorial reign, not a claim ceding kingship to a merely spiritual/inward realm equivalent to Advaitic inward liberation detached from any historical claim.
Discipleship and the Love Command
Kannada name: ಶಿಷ್ಯತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಆಜ್ಞೆ
Key terms: new_commandment, foot_washing, servants_friends
Review routing: Native speaker review
Christ’s self-giving love is the pattern and source of the command, not an independently achievable ethical discipline; foot-washing humility should not be assimilated to the Lingayat kayaka sacred-labor ethic as itself the ground of standing before God.
Worship in Spirit and Truth
Kannada name: ಆತ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಆರಾಧನೆ
Key terms: worship_in_spirit_truth, truth_aletheia, holy_spirit
Review routing: Native speaker review
Must not be read as endorsing a generic, place-independent inward devotion compatible with any path (a reading some Advaitic and bhakti frameworks might welcome); ἐν ἀληθείᾳ ties true worship specifically to the truth revealed in Christ (14:6), not a formless interiority open to any object of devotion.
Shepherding Ministry and the Church
Kannada name: ಕುರುಬನ ಸೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಭೆ
Key terms: good_shepherd, feed_shepherd_sheep, door_gate
Review routing: Native speaker review
Peter’s (and by extension every minister’s) shepherding role must be presented as derivative and accountable to Christ the one Good Shepherd, not an independent guru-like teaching office analogous to the wandering Lingayat ಜಂಗಮ office.
Forgiveness of Sins through Christ’s Authority
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಅಧಿಕಾರದಿಂದ ಪಾಪಕ್ಷಮೆ
Key terms: forgiveness_of_sins, sin, holy_spirit
Review routing: Native speaker review
The disciples’ authority to declare forgiveness is derivative, grounded entirely in Christ’s already-finished atoning work (19:30), not an independent human power to absolve sin by ritual performance or merit accumulation.
Living Water and New Life
Kannada name: ಜೀವಜಲ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ಜೀವನ
Key terms: water_living_water, holy_spirit, eternal_life
Review routing: Native speaker review
‘ಜೀವಜಲ’ (living water) names Spirit-given inner life and must not be assimilated to sacred-river or ritual-bathing purification practices prevalent in regional religious life; the Spirit given is the same ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ already established, tied explicitly by the narrator (7:39) to Christ’s own glorification.
Signs Revealing Christ’s Identity
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಗುರುತನ್ನು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸುವ ಸೂಚಕಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು
Key terms: sign_semeion, glory
Review routing: Native speaker review
σημεῖα are revelatory pointers to Christ’s divine identity, not a bare power-display comparable to a yogic siddhi (attained power) or an isolated wonder sought for its own sake; John’s own purpose statement (20:30-31) ties the signs directly to faith unto eternal life.
