Existing Kannada Bible translations
Kannada has a long-standing Bible translation tradition, with established renderings circulating among Kannada-speaking Christian communities across Karnataka. This Language Package follows established precedent for core terms (ದೇವರು, ಯೇಸು, ಕರ್ತ, ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ, ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ) rather than introducing new renderings, so this curriculum’s vocabulary matches what a reader would already encounter in a Kannada Bible.
Where existing translations fall short for Bible study curricula in this language
- Doctrinal precision vs. readability trade-offs: existing Kannada Bible translations are optimized for liturgical and devotional reading. A Bible study curriculum needs to be more explicit than a Bible translation can be — e.g. explaining why ರಕ್ಷಣೆ (salvation) is not ಐಕ್ಯ, rather than simply using the correct term and trusting context.
- No settled glossary addressing the Lingayat “false familiarity” risk: existing Christian materials in Kannada generally address the Hindu avatar/karma/moksha syncretism pattern common across North India, but rarely address the more subtle risk posed by Lingayat theology’s genuine partial overlap with biblical monotheism. This Language Package’s
translation_memory.jsonanddoctrine_risk_registry.jsonfill that specific gap. - Gaps around technical theological vocabulary: terms like “imputed righteousness” (ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ) or “obedience of faith” (ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ವಿಧೇಯತ್ವ) have compound renderings that exist in specialist theological Kannada but are not in common devotional use — curriculum content has to introduce and explain them, not assume prior familiarity.

Readiness assessment
Kannada is reasonably well-positioned for Bible study curricula: established, non-ambiguous renderings already exist for its highest-risk terms (ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ for incarnation, ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ for resurrection, ರಕ್ಷಣೆ for salvation). The task specific to Kannada is disciplined trajectory checking — verifying that a fluent, doctrinally-correct-sounding passage does not still drift toward an Aikya-merger reading by its end, which is a subtler failure mode than a single wrong word.
