Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: Colossians (Kannada Destination Language)

Methodology

This analysis proceeds in Koine Greek from the critical text tradition underlying modern English versions (ESV/NIV base, checked against NA28 wording). For every load-bearing theological or exegetically significant term, the following fields are recorded: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants found across major translations, contextual theological meaning in Colossians, and destination-language (Kannada) rendering risk. Where a term already exists in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json, the recorded Kannada rendering is reused exactly and marked [BASELINE REUSE]. New terms are marked [NEW] and proposed for promotion to the extended translation memory in a subsequent step.

Colossians is unusually dense in load-bearing vocabulary for its length — the core passage (1:15-20), the polemic against the Colossian error (2:8-23), and the household code (3:18-4:1) each introduce clusters of terms not present in the Romans baseline and requiring fresh risk analysis specific to Kannada-speaking Karnataka’s religious landscape (Haridasa Krishna-bhakti, Lingayat/Veerashaiva Shaivism, Shakta goddess devotion, and coastal Tulu Nadu Bhuta/spirit-veneration practice, alongside mainstream Hindu cosmology).

PART ONE: CORE PASSAGE — Colossians 1:15-20 (Verse-by-Verse)

Colossians 1:15

Greek: ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου, πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

εἰκών (eikōn) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “image, likeness, exact representation” (as an image stamped on a coin or a reflection in a mirror).
  • Semantic range: a copy or portrait → a visible manifestation of an invisible original → (in the Hellenistic-Jewish wisdom background Paul draws on) the perfect representation that discloses the essence of what it represents, not a diminished copy.
  • English variants: “image,” “likeness,” “exact representation,” “visible form.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is not a created replica of God but the complete, personal, visible disclosure of the invisible God’s own being, character, and glory (cf. 2 Cor 4:4; John 1:18). This is a claim of identity-in-manifestation, not resemblance.
  • Kannada rendering: ಪ್ರತಿರೂಪ (pratirūpa).
  • Risk: Critical. ಪ್ರತಿರೂಪ is the established Kannada Christian term for “image” (as in Genesis 1:26-27). The risk is that readers formed by Karnataka’s devotional traditions may assimilate “image of God” to the avatāra pattern — a deity’s chosen temporary form or descent — rather than the eternal Son’s timeless, essential self-disclosure of the Father. Must be read together with the baseline’s Critical flag on ಅವತಾರ/ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ (incarnation): εἰκών here names WHO Christ eternally is in relation to the Father (his nature), while ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ names WHAT happened at a point in time (his becoming flesh). Translator notes should keep these distinct.

ἀόρατος (aoratos) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “unseen, invisible” (a- privative + horaō, “to see”).
  • Semantic range: physically imperceptible; by extension, transcendent, beyond creaturely sensory access.
  • English variants: “invisible,” “unseen.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: God’s essential transcendence, which Christ alone (as εἰκών) makes visible and known.
  • Kannada rendering: ಅದೃಶ್ಯ (adṛśya).
  • Risk: Medium. Standard, non-controversial term; low risk of confusion, though translators should avoid implying God is invisible merely as an unmanifest cosmic principle (a monistic Brahman-like reading) rather than a personal being who has chosen to reveal himself in Christ.

πρωτότοκος (prototokos) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “firstborn” (prōtos, “first” + tiktō, “to bear/beget”).
  • Semantic range: in ordinary Greek usage, the first child born, bearing rights of primary inheritance and rank; in Jewish royal/covenantal usage (cf. Psalm 89:27, “I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth”), a title of supreme rank and heirship, not merely birth order.
  • English variants: “firstborn,” “first in rank,” “supreme heir.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ holds the supreme rank and inheritance-right over all creation as its sovereign heir and origin — the term does not imply Christ was the first being brought into existence.
  • Kannada rendering: ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ (coccala) — full phrase: ಸಮಸ್ತ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಗೆ ಚೊಚ್ಚಲನಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ (“he is firstborn over/of all creation”).
  • Risk: Critical. This is one of the single highest-risk terms in the entire book. ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ literally denotes birth order in everyday Kannada. Two distinct errors must be guarded against in translator notes and companion material: (1) the historic Arian misreading, that Christ is the first-created being (a heresy with no direct Kannada parallel but easily reintroduced by a literalistic ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ rendering); and (2) a Karnataka-specific misreading in which “firstborn” is absorbed into the logic of a divine hierarchy of emanated or born deities (as in some Puranic genealogies of gods, or a Sharana/Aikya-attainment narrative of a supremely realized being who arose first among spiritually advanced figures). A mandatory translator note is required at every occurrence clarifying ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ here means supreme heir and sovereign rank, reinforced by the immediate clause “for by him all things were created” (v.16), which excludes Christ from the class of created things.

κτίσις (ktisis) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “creation, that which is created” (from ktizō, “to found/create”).
  • Semantic range: the act of creating; the sum of created things (the cosmos); occasionally, a specific created being or institution.
  • English variants: “creation,” “creature,” “created order.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the entire created universe, over which Christ holds supremacy as its origin, sustainer, and goal (v.16), not one member within it.
  • Kannada rendering: ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ (sṛṣṭi).
  • Risk: High. ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ is the standard and only viable Kannada term, but it is also the exact word used in mainstream Hindu cosmology for Brahma’s cyclical creation within the sṛṣṭi-sthiti-laya (creation-preservation-dissolution) cosmic cycle. Translators must ensure surrounding context (v.16’s “by him,” “through him,” “for him”) makes clear this is a single, purposive, linear creation by a personal Creator distinct from his creation — not one turn of a recurring cosmic cycle.

Colossians 1:16

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

κτίζω (ktizō) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “to create, to found, to bring into being.”
  • Semantic range: divine creative activity (never used in the NT of human “making”); founding a city; originating an institution.
  • English variants: “created,” “made,” “brought into being.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the passive “were created” (theological/divine passive) attributes all creative agency to God the Father acting through the Son; repeated twice (v.16a, v.16c) framing the whole verse.
  • Kannada rendering: ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತು / ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿದನು (sṛṣṭisalpaṭṭitu / sṛṣṭisidanu).
  • Risk: High. Same risk class as ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ above; the passive construction (“were created,” ἐκτίσθη) must not be softened into an impersonal “came to be” that would permit a pantheistic or emanationist reading (things arising out of the divine essence rather than being made by divine will).

θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι (thronoi, kyriotētes, archai, exousiai) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “thrones,” “lordships/dominions,” “rulers/first ones,” “authorities” — a fourfold list naming ranks of spiritual/angelic power.
  • Semantic range: in Second Temple Jewish and early Christian usage, these terms name ranked orders of angelic and spiritual powers (both good and, elsewhere in Paul, fallen) that were widely believed to govern nations, nature, and cosmic affairs.
  • English variants: “thrones,” “dominions,” “rulers,” “authorities,” “powers,” “principalities.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: Paul names the entire conceivable hierarchy of spiritual power precisely to declare that every rank of it was created by and for Christ (v.16) and is subject to him (cf. 2:10, 2:15) — a direct polemic against the Colossian error’s apparent veneration of intermediary powers.
  • Risk: High. This fourfold list will resonate immediately — and dangerously — with Karnataka’s rich populated cosmos of intermediary spiritual beings: village guardian deities (grāma devate), planetary powers (navagraha) governing fate, and, along the coast, the Bhuta/Daiva spirits addressed in Tulu Nadu ritual (Bhuta Kola). The Kannada rendering must be paired with the clear doctrinal frame that ALL such powers, however named locally, are Christ’s creatures, created through him and for him, already stripped of ultimate authority (2:15) — never independent objects of reverence, negotiation, or ritual placation.

πρὸ πάντων (pro pantōn) — see under v.17 below (same clause, treated with συνέστηκεν for flow).

Colossians 1:17

Greek: καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν πρὸ πάντων καὶ τὰ πάντα ἐν αὐτῷ συνέστηκεν. “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

πρὸ πάντων (pro pantōn) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “before all things” (temporally and, by implication, in rank).
  • Semantic range: temporal priority (existing prior to); ontological priority (supreme rank, precedence).
  • English variants: “before all things,” “prior to everything,” “supreme over all.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: a direct assertion of Christ’s eternal pre-existence — he does not belong to the class of created things named in v.16 but stands prior to and above them all.
  • Kannada rendering: ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮೊದಲು (ellakkinta modalu, “before/prior to everything”).
  • Risk: High. Must be rendered so as to preserve BOTH temporal pre-existence and supreme rank; a purely temporal rendering alone (“earlier in time”) risks admitting the Arian-adjacent reading that Christ merely existed a very long time before other creatures, rather than eternally and uncreated.

συνέστηκεν (synestēken, from συνίστημι synistēmi) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “stands together, holds together, coheres” (syn-, “together” + histēmi, “to stand/set”).
  • Semantic range: to hold together physically (as parts of a structure); to cohere as a unified system; to be sustained in existence.
  • English variants: “hold together,” “consist,” “cohere,” “are sustained.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is not only creation’s origin but its continuous sustaining cause — the universe does not run on its own momentum but is actively held in ordered existence by the Son’s ongoing power.
  • Kannada rendering: ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಆತನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಿವೆ (ellavū ātanalli oṭṭāgi nintive, “all things stand/hold together in him”).
  • Risk: High. Risk of a pantheistic misreading in which Christ becomes an impersonal cosmic “glue” or ground-of-being force (echoing Vedantic Brahman-as-substratum-of-all-existence) rather than the personal, sovereign Lord who freely and purposively sustains a creation distinct from himself. Translator notes should anchor this to Christ’s personal agency (“in him,” ἐν αὐτῷ) rather than an abstract force.

Colossians 1:18

“And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.”

κεφαλή (kephalē) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “head” (the physical head of a body).
  • Semantic range: the literal head; by metaphor, source/origin; by metaphor, ruling authority/chief.
  • English variants: “head,” “chief,” “source,” “ruler.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the ruling authority and life-source of the Church, his body — a relationship of vital, organic union combined with unambiguous authority (cf. 2:10, 2:19).
  • Kannada rendering: ತಲೆ (tale).
  • Risk: Critical. This term carries the assigned curriculum doctrine “Christ as Head of the Church” directly. Risk: ತಲೆ could be flattened to a merely honorary “figurehead” or one leader among a council of elders/gurus, especially given Karnataka’s familiarity with living human gurus/mathas (monastic heads) who hold titular headship over a religious institution while remaining ordinary mortals succeeded generation after generation. Colossians’ κεφαλή is categorically different: Christ is the SAME living, resurrected, exclusive Head across all time, never replaced or succeeded, and organically constitutive of the body’s very life (2:19, “the whole body, nourished and knit together… grows with a growth that is from God”). Translator notes required at every occurrence.

σῶμα (sōma) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “body” (physical body).
  • Semantic range: a physical body (human or animal); by extension, a corporate/organic whole; later in this same letter (2:17) shifts sense to mean “substance/reality” as opposed to “shadow.”
  • English variants: “body,” “physical body,” “substance” (2:17 sense only).
  • Contextual theological meaning: here, the Church as Christ’s own body — a living, organic, vitally connected community united to its Head, not a mere organization or membership roll.
  • Kannada rendering: ದೇಹ (deha).
  • Risk: High. Must be kept consistent with ಸಭೆ (church, baseline reuse) so that “body of Christ” reads as ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇಹವಾದ ಸಭೆ. Flag for translators: the SAME Greek word σῶμα recurs at 2:17 with the different sense “substance/reality” (contrasted with σκιά, “shadow”) — rendering both occurrences with ದೇಹ would create confusion; 2:17 requires a distinct Kannada word (see Chapter 2 below).

ἐκκλησία (ekklēsia) — [BASELINE REUSE]

  • Kannada rendering: ಸಭೆ (sabhe), per baseline translation_memory.json.
  • Risk: Medium (per baseline). No deviation; reused exactly.

ἀρχή (archē) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “beginning, origin, first principle” (same root as ἀρχαί in v.16 “rulers,” but a distinct lexical sense here).
  • Semantic range: temporal beginning; source/origin; first in a series; (as seen in v.16) a ruling power.
  • English variants: “beginning,” “origin,” “source,” “first.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the ἀρχή — the originating source — of the new resurrection-order, just as he was the ἀρχή of the first creation (implicit parallel with Genesis 1:1’s ἀρχή). Paul plays deliberately on the same root used for “rulers” (ἀρχαί) in v.16: Christ is not merely one of the ranked ἀρχαί (rulers) but is himself the ἀρχή (source) from which even the ἀρχαί derive their existence.
  • Kannada rendering: ಆದಿ (ādi).
  • Risk: Medium. Translators must render ἀρχή (beginning/source, v.18) and ἀρχαί (rulers, v.16) with two clearly DIFFERENT Kannada words (ಆದಿ vs. ಪ್ರಭುತ್ವಗಳು) to preserve Paul’s wordplay-contrast rather than accidentally merging Christ into the class of “rulers” he in fact originates and transcends.

πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν (prototokos ek tōn nekrōn) — [reuses πρωτότοκος above + νεκρός nekros, “dead”]

  • Contextual theological meaning: Christ is the first and supreme one to rise bodily from among the dead, in a resurrection that is qualitatively new and guarantees the resurrection of all united to him — not merely the first of many parallel or repeatable events.
  • Kannada rendering: ಸತ್ತವರೊಳಗಿಂದ ಚೊಚ್ಚಲಾಗಿ ಎದ್ದವನು (sattavaroḷaginda coccalāgi eddavanu, “the one who rose as firstborn from among the dead”).
  • Risk: Critical. Must be read together with the baseline’s Critical flag on ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ (resurrection): this is a historical, bodily, unrepeatable event that begins a new order of existence, and must never be assimilated to ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (rebirth within an ongoing cycle) — see Chapter usage below, where the noun ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ itself does not appear in this verse but the underlying doctrine (Resurrection of Christ, Critical in the baseline registry) is directly invoked and must be cross-referenced by reviewers.

πρωτεύων (prōteuōn) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “being first, holding first place” (from prōtos, “first”).
  • Semantic range: to hold the foremost rank or position in any category.
  • English variants: “preeminent,” “supreme,” “first in everything.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the stated purpose (ἵνα, “so that”) of Christ’s supremacy over both creation and resurrection: universal, unqualified preeminence in every domain.
  • Kannada rendering: ಎಲ್ಲದರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲಿಗನಾಗುವುದು (elladaralli modaliganāguvudu, “to become first/foremost in everything”).
  • Risk: Medium. Low ambiguity in itself, but reviewers should verify the “everything” (ἐν πᾶσιν) is not narrowed or softened, consistent with the curriculum doctrine of Christ’s supremacy over ALL creation without exception.

Colossians 1:19

Greek: ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ εὐδόκησεν πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα κατοικῆσαι “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.”

εὐδοκέω (eudokeō) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “to be well pleased, to resolve/decide favorably” (eu-, “well” + dokeō, “to think/seem”).
  • Semantic range: divine good pleasure/sovereign resolve (frequently used of the Father’s will, e.g. at Christ’s baptism and transfiguration); personal satisfaction or approval.
  • English variants: “was pleased,” “was well pleased,” “chose,” “determined.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the Father’s sovereign, glad decision that his own full being should dwell in the Son — an act of will, not an accident or a necessity imposed from outside.
  • Kannada rendering: ಸಂತೋಷಿಸಿದನು / ಇಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟನು (santōṣisidanu / iṣṭapaṭṭanu).
  • Risk: Medium. Standard vocabulary; ensure the sense of sovereign divine resolve (not mere emotional pleasure) is retained.

πλήρωμα (plērōma) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “fullness, that which fills, completeness” (from plēroō, “to fill”).
  • Semantic range: the full measure or complete content of something; in later Gnostic usage (post-dating Paul but illuminating the term’s later trajectory), the totality of divine emanations filling the space between the transcendent God and the material world.
  • English variants: “fullness,” “the full measure,” “complete sum.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the ENTIRE reality of God’s own being and attributes, without remainder, dwells in Christ — not a partial share, delegated fragment, or emanated portion.
  • Kannada rendering: ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ (sampūrṇate).
  • Risk: Critical. This is the single most theologically load-bearing new term in Colossians, directly carrying the assigned doctrine “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily.” The gravest risk is convergence with the Upanishadic concept of pūrṇam (पूर्णम्/ಪೂರ್ಣ) — the Isha Upanishad’s declaration that Brahman is “that fullness” from which all finite things emanate and to which they return, a concept deeply present in Kannada Vedantic and bhakti religious literacy. Paul’s plērōma, by contrast, asserts a unique, once-for-all, historically located, bodily indwelling in the single person of Jesus Christ — not a diffuse cosmic plenum in which many beings or all reality participate by degree. Every occurrence (1:19; 2:9) requires a mandatory translator note anchoring ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ to “in Christ” (ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ) and to God’s undivided being, not a distributed divine substance.

κατοικέω (katoikeō) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “to dwell, to settle down permanently” (kata-, intensive + oikeō, “to inhabit”).
  • Semantic range: permanent residence (contrasted in Greek with paroikeō, “to sojourn temporarily”); to inhabit fully and continuously.
  • English variants: “dwell,” “reside permanently,” “make one’s home.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: God’s fullness does not merely visit or temporarily rest upon Christ but takes up permanent residence in him — a settled, continuous, not episodic, indwelling.
  • Kannada rendering: ವಾಸಿಸು (vāsisu, “to dwell/reside”).
  • Risk: High. The permanence conveyed by κατοικέω must be clear in Kannada phrasing (e.g., ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ವಾಸಿಸಿತು, “dwelt permanently”) to distinguish this from any pattern of temporary divine visitation, possession, or avataric descent-and-withdrawal familiar from Karnataka’s devotional traditions.

Colossians 1:20

“and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

ἀποκαταλλάσσω (apokatallassō) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “to reconcile fully, to restore to a right relationship” (apo-, intensive + katallassō, “to exchange/reconcile”).
  • Semantic range: to change hostility into friendship; to restore a broken relationship to its proper state; in commercial Greek usage, to exchange currency (bringing to right proportion) — a background sense that colors the “restoration to right relationship” meaning.
  • English variants: “reconcile,” “restore to favor,” “bring back into right relationship.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the cosmic scope of Christ’s reconciling work — not merely individual forgiveness but the restoration of the entire created order (“all things… whether on earth or in heaven”) to right relationship with God, accomplished at the cross.
  • Kannada rendering: ಸಂಧಾನಪಡಿಸು (sandhānapaḍisu), noun form ಸಂಧಾನ (sandhāna, “reconciliation, settlement”).
  • Risk: Critical. This verb directly carries the assigned doctrine “Reconciliation through the Cross.” Two risks converge here: (1) ಸಂಧಾನ is common secular Kannada vocabulary for a negotiated political or business settlement between two relatively equal parties, which could wrongly suggest God and creation reconcile as equals through mutual concession rather than through God’s unilateral, gracious initiative accomplished entirely by Christ’s blood; (2) a subtler risk of assimilation to non-dual (Advaitic) resolutions of apparent difference — where “reconciliation” of the finite and the infinite is achieved by realizing an underlying identity (the self is Brahman) rather than by a real, historical atoning transaction that leaves both God and the reconciled creation distinct, personal parties in restored relationship. Mandatory translator note at every occurrence anchoring the term to “through the blood of his cross” (v.20b) as the sole and sufficient means.

εἰρηνοποιέω (eirēnopoieō) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “to make peace” (eirēnē, “peace” + poieō, “to make/do”).
  • Semantic range: to actively establish peace where hostility existed; a decisive act, not a passive state.
  • English variants: “making peace,” “having made peace,” “establishing peace.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: peace is not discovered or negotiated but actively MADE by Christ, and specifically located “by the blood of his cross” — grounding cosmic peace in a single historical, bloody, sacrificial act.
  • Kannada rendering: ಶಾಂತಿಯನ್ನು ಉಂಟುಮಾಡಿ (śāntiyannu uṇṭumāḍi, “having made/produced peace”), using the baseline term ಶಾಂತಿ [BASELINE REUSE for the noun].
  • Risk: High. Must not be flattened into a state achieved through inner tranquility or meditative discipline (as ಶಾಂತಿ alone might suggest in a devotional or Lingayat meditative context per the baseline’s existing note on ಶಾಂತಿ) — this peace is a cosmic, objective, once-for-all accomplishment secured at the cross.

αἷμα (haima) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “blood.”
  • Semantic range: the literal blood of a person; by extension (as in sacrificial contexts), a life poured out in death, especially in atoning sacrifice.
  • English variants: “blood.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the specific historical, bodily death of Jesus is the price and means of cosmic reconciliation — emphasizing real physical death, not a symbolic or merely spiritual transaction.
  • Kannada rendering: ರಕ್ತ (rakta).
  • Risk: Medium. Standard vocabulary; ensure the sacrificial-atoning sense is clear from context (cf. Levitical sacrificial background, which requires OT literacy support for readers with low Old Testament narrative background per the baseline’s target-audience profile).

σταυρός (stauros) — [NEW]

  • Literal meaning: “cross, stake” (the Roman instrument of execution).
  • Semantic range: a literal wooden execution stake/cross; by metonymy, the event of crucifixion itself; by further extension, the entire redemptive accomplishment associated with Christ’s death.
  • English variants: “cross,” “crucifixion.”
  • Contextual theological meaning: the specific historical means of Christ’s death is named as the concrete locus of cosmic reconciliation — a scandalous, shameful, physical instrument transformed into the place of the universe’s restoration.
  • Kannada rendering: ಶಿಲುಬೆ (śilube).
  • Risk: Medium. Established Kannada Christian term; low ambiguity, though its shame-association in the Roman world may need brief explanatory framing for readers unfamiliar with Roman execution practice.

deliver / rescueῥύομαι (rhyomai)to rescue, snatch out of dangerdeliverance from a hostile powerdelivered, rescued, snatched”He has delivered us from the domain of darkness” (1:13)ಬಿಡಿಸಿದನು [NEW]High. Connects to the Critical baseline doctrine of Salvation (ರಕ್ಷಣೆ); this is a decisive, completed rescue by a personal God from an actual hostile dominion, not liberation from an impersonal cosmic cycle.
domain of darkness / kingdom of lightἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους / βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ (exousia tou skotous / basileia tou huiou)authority of darkness / kingdom of the Sona realm of hostile spiritual dominion vs. Christ’s kingdomdominion/domain of darkness; kingdom of the SonTransfer of allegiance and citizenship from one dominion to another (1:13)ಕತ್ತಲೆಯ ಅಧಿಕಾರ / [ಆತನ ಪ್ರಿಯ] ಮಗನ ರಾಜ್ಯ [NEW, “ರಾಜ್ಯ” pattern per BASELINE REUSE — kingdom_of_god]High. Must be read as a moral-spiritual transfer of allegiance under a personal Lord’s reign, not a metaphysical dualism of two co-equal cosmic forces (as in Samkhya guna theory or popular light/darkness folk dualism).
beloved Sonυἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ (huios tēs agapēs autou, lit. “son of his love”)son belonging to his love (Hebraic idiom for “his beloved son”)idiomatic intensified affection + full sonshiphis beloved Son, the Son he lovesThe one into whose kingdom believers are transferred (1:13)ಆತನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಮಗ [pattern connects to BASELINE REUSE — son_of_god: ದೇವರ ಮಗ]Critical. Must retain the full, eternal Sonship sense established in the baseline (ದೇವರ ಮಗ), not merely “a dear son” in an ordinary familial sense.
redemptionἀπολύτρωσις (apolytrōsis)a buying back, ransom-releaserelease effected by payment of a priceredemption”in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (1:14)ವಿಮೋಚನೆ [NEW]Critical. ವಿಮೋಚನೆ shares a root sense (“release”) with ಮೋಕ್ಷ (mokṣa), which the baseline forbids for “salvation.” Must always be anchored with “ಪಾಪದಿಂದ” (from sin) and/or “ರಕ್ತದ ಮೂಲಕ” (through his blood) to keep the referent a specific, Christ-purchased release from sin’s bondage — never a generalized release from the cycle of rebirth.
forgivenessἄφεσις (aphesis)release, forgiveness, pardonletting go of a debt or offenseforgiveness, remission”the forgiveness of sins” (1:14)ಕ್ಷಮೆ [NEW]High. Standard term; pair consistently with ಪಾಪ [BASELINE REUSE — sin] as ಪಾಪಕ್ಷಮೆ.
mysteryμυστήριον (mystērion)a secret, hidden thinga truth once hidden by God, now disclosedmystery, secret”the mystery hidden for ages… now revealed to his saints” (1:26); “the mystery… Christ in you, the hope of glory” (1:27)ರಹಸ್ಯ [NEW]Critical. ರಹಸ್ಯ is the established Kannada Bible term, but it is also the precise word for esoteric teaching in Vedantic/Tantric tradition (guhya-rahasya reserved for qualified initiates) and for a guru’s secret transmission in bhakti lineages. Paul’s mystērion moves in the OPPOSITE direction: a truth once hidden, NOW PUBLICLY REVEALED and proclaimed to all (1:23, 1:28), not an esoteric truth restricted to initiates. Mandatory translator note at every occurrence: “ಈಗ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿದೆ” (now revealed/made manifest).
minister / servantδιάκονος (diakonos)servant, one who servestable-servant; by extension, one commissioned to serve in ministryminister, servant, deaconEpaphras/Paul described as διάκονος of the gospel/church (1:7, 1:23, 1:25)ಸೇವಕ [NEW]Low/Medium. Standard term; distinguish generic “servant” from an eventual formal deacon office (developing usage), contextual only.
stewardshipοἰκονομία (oikonomia)household managementadministrative commission/responsibilitystewardship, commission, administration”the stewardship from God that was given to me for you” (1:25)ಉಸ್ತುವಾರಿ [NEW]Low/Medium. Standard administrative term.
suffering / afflictionsπαθήματα / θλίψεις (pathēmata / thlipseis)sufferings / afflictionshardship endured for the gospel’s sakesufferings, afflictions”filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions… for the sake of his body” (1:24)ಬಾಧೆಗಳು / ಸಂಕಟಗಳು [NEW]Medium. Must not be misread as adding to the sufficiency of Christ’s atoning suffering (already Critical-flagged as complete at the cross, 1:20); Paul’s “filling up” refers to the ongoing, representative suffering of gospel ministry, not a supplement to atonement.
energy / working (of God)ἐνέργεια (energeia)operative power, effectual workingactive power at work in and through a personworking, power, energy”struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me” (1:29)ಕಾರ್ಯಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ [NEW, extends BASELINE ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ root]High. Must never use ಶಕ್ತಿ (forbidden per baseline); treat as an extension/collocation of ದೇವರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ.
perfect / matureτέλειος (teleios)complete, mature, fully-formedmoral/spiritual maturity; completeness of standingmature, perfect, complete”that we may present everyone mature in Christ” (1:28)ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ [NEW]High. See extended discussion at Chapter 3/4; risk of assimilation to the Lingayat shatsthala path’s stage-by-stage self-attained perfection culminating in Aikya. Must be anchored as a Spirit-given standing “in Christ” (ἐν Χριστῷ), reached through gospel proclamation and union with Christ, not self-cultivated ascent.
reconcile (repeated)ἀποκαταλλάσσω (apokatallassō)see v.20 abovesee v.20 abovereconcile”you… he has now reconciled” (1:21-22)ಸಂಧಾನಪಡಿಸು [NEW — same as v.20]Critical (see v.20 rationale above).
alienated / hostile in mindἀπηλλοτριωμένοι / ἐχθροὺς τῇ διανοίᾳ (apēllotriōmenoi / echthrous tē dianoia)estranged / enemies in mind/thoughtprior state of separation and active hostility toward Godalienated, estranged, hostile in mind”you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind” (1:21)ಅನ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದವರು / ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವೈರಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದವರು [NEW]Medium. Standard vocabulary describing humanity’s prior condition; low ambiguity risk.
body of his fleshτὸ σῶμα τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ (to sōma tēs sarkos autou)the body of his fleshChrist’s real, physical, mortal bodyhis body of flesh, his physical body”he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death” (1:22)ಆತನ ಶರೀರ / ಆತನ ಮಾಂಸ ದೇಹ [NEW]High. Emphasizes Christ’s genuine physical humanity and death against any docetic (merely-appeared) reading; connects to the baseline’s Critical doctrine of the Incarnation (ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ) and Humanity of Christ.
holy, blameless, above reproachἅγιος, ἄμωμος, ἀνέγκλητος (hagios, amōmos, anegklētos)holy, unblemished, unaccusedthe believer’s new standing before God, as if presented at a final tribunalholy and blameless and above reproachPurpose of reconciliation: “to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him” (1:22)ಪವಿತ್ರ [BASELINE REUSE] , ನಿರ್ದೋಷಿ, ನಿಂದಾರಹಿತ [NEW for latter two]High. ಪವಿತ್ರ reused exactly per baseline; the latter two forensic-declarative terms should echo the register of ನೀತಿವಂತರೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಣಯಿಸುವುದು (justification, baseline) — a declared, not self-achieved, standing.

knowledge / understanding (cluster)γνῶσις / ἐπίγνωσις / σύνεσις (gnōsis / epignōsis / synesis)knowledge / full knowledge / understandingintellectual and relational grasp of divine truthknowledge, understanding, insight”the full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ” (2:2-3)ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ / ಪೂರ್ಣ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ [NEW]Critical. This cluster, combined with “mystery,” is the theological center of Paul’s polemic against the Colossian error (which apparently offered a superior, esoteric γνῶσις). ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ is chosen (a Dravidian-root word) instead of the more heavily loaded ಜ್ಞಾನ/ಅರಿವು to reduce — but not eliminate — resonance with Vedantic ātma-jñāna (self-knowledge as the means of liberation) and the Lingayat vachana tradition’s ಅರಿವು (awakened spiritual awareness, central to the shatsthala path toward Aikya). All true knowledge, per 2:3, is located “in Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” — a relational, Christ-centered, revealed knowledge, never a self-attained gnosis or mystical awareness that bypasses or transcends the historical, incarnate Christ.
hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledgeἀπόκρυφοι θησαυροί (apokryphoi thēsauroi)hidden treasuresconcealed riches now available in Christhidden treasures”in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (2:3)ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಸಂಪತ್ತು [NEW]High. Reinforces that ALL wisdom/knowledge is located exclusively in Christ, not distributed among rival teachers or philosophies.
plausible arguments / deludeπιθανολογία / παραλογίζομαι (pithanologia / paralogizomai)persuasive speech / to deceive by false reasoningrhetorically convincing but false teachingplausible arguments, delude, deceive”so that no one may delude you with plausible arguments” (2:4)ಮನವೊಲಿಸುವ ವಾದಗಳಿಂದ ಮೋಸಗೊಳಿಸು [NEW]Medium. Names the rhetorical danger of the false teaching; standard vocabulary.
firmness of faithστερέωμα τῆς πίστεως (stereōma tēs pisteōs)solidity/firmness of faithstability and good order in belieffirmness of your faith”rejoicing to see your… firmness of your faith in Christ” (2:5)ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಸ್ಥಿರತೆ [NEW, uses BASELINE ನಂಬಿಕೆ]Low/Medium. Standard.
walk (conduct)περιπατέω (peripateō)to walk aboutone’s manner of life/conductwalk, live, conduct oneself”as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him” (2:6)ನಡೆ [NEW]Low. Standard Pauline ethical metaphor.
rooted, built up, establishedἐρριζωμένοι, ἐποικοδομούμενοι, βεβαιούμενοι (errizōmenoi, epoikodomoumenoi, bebaioumenoi)rooted / being built up / being confirmedmetaphors of stability and growth (botanical + architectural)rooted, built up, established”rooted and built up in him and established in the faith” (2:7)ಬೇರೂರಿ, ಕಟ್ಟಲ್ಪಟ್ಟು, ಸ್ಥಿರಗೊಳಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟು [NEW]Low. Standard imagery.
philosophyφιλοσοφία (philosophia)love of wisdomreasoned systems of thought about ultimate reality; here, the specific syncretistic teaching troubling Colossaephilosophy”see to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit” (2:8)ತತ್ವಜ್ಞಾನ [NEW]High. Must NOT be read as a blanket condemnation of reasoned thought or of any of Karnataka’s rich philosophical traditions (Vedanta, Samkhya, Veerashaiva philosophy) as such; the text specifically targets a syncretistic blend of legalism, ascetic mysticism, and cosmic-power veneration set “not according to Christ.”
empty deceitκενῆς ἀπάτης (kenēs apatēs)empty/hollow deceptionworthless, deceptive teaching lacking substanceempty deceit, empty deceptionSame clause as above (2:8)ಟೊಳ್ಳಾದ ಮೋಸ [NEW]Medium. Standard.
human traditionπαράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων (paradosis tōn anthrōpōn)tradition of menteaching originating from human authority rather than Christhuman tradition, tradition of men”according to human tradition… and not according to Christ” (2:8)ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ [NEW]High. ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ is the precise word for the honored devotional/philosophical lineages of Karnataka (Haridasa sampradaya, Veerashaiva sampradaya). Must clarify Paul does not condemn tradition or heritage as such, but specifically any tradition — however venerable — that supplants Christ’s sufficiency and supremacy.
elemental spirits of the worldστοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου (stoicheia tou kosmou)basic elements/rudiments of the worldelementary religious/cosmic principles; possibly astral powers, ritual calendars, or basic cosmological building-blockselemental spirits, elemental principles, basic principles”according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ” (2:8); “if with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why… submit to regulations” (2:20)ಲೋಕದ ಮೂಲತತ್ವಗಳು [NEW]Critical. Direct collision risk with (a) mainstream Hindu pañcabhūta cosmology (the five elements — earth, water, fire, air, ether/ākāśa — as the building blocks of reality) and (b) astrological planetary powers (navagraha) widely believed in Karnataka to govern fate and require ritual appeasement. Must be clarified as the basic religious/cosmic principles (whether Jewish ceremonial law, pagan nature-worship, or astral fatalism) that held people in bondage before Christ, now rendered powerless by his cross (2:15) — not a claim about the physical elements themselves.
fullness of deityπλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος (plērōma tēs theotētos)fullness of deity/Godheadthe entire divine nature/essencefullness of the Godhead, fullness of deity”in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily” (2:9)ದೇವತ್ವದ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ [NEW — combines ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ from 1:19 + new ದೇವತ್ವ]Critical. Carries the assigned doctrine “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily” directly. See θεότης entry below.
deity / Godheadθεότης (theotēs)deity, divine nature/essencethe essential being/nature of God, as distinct from θειότης (theiotēs, “divine quality/attribute,” Rom 1:20)deity, Godhead, divine nature”the whole fullness of deity dwells [in Christ] bodily” (2:9)ದೇವತ್ವ (dēvatva) [NEW]Critical. ದೇವತ್ವ could be misread through the lens of Hindu religious multiplicity, in which many beings (devas) possess “devatva” in some measure, or through the Lingayat Aikya state in which a devotee’s identity is said to merge with and share in Shiva’s nature. Paul’s claim is exclusive and total: the ENTIRE, undivided nature of the ONE God (cf. baseline’s ದೇವರು entry) dwells uniquely in Christ — not a portion, not a shared or attainable divine quality available to other beings. Must always appear paired with ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ/ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ (full/fullness) and never in isolation.
bodilyσωματικῶς (sōmatikōs)in bodily form, physicallyin actual physical/bodily manner, as opposed to merely apparent or symbolicbodily, in bodily form”dwells bodily” (2:9)ದೈಹಿಕವಾಗಿ (daihikavāgi) [NEW]Critical. Guards against any docetic, purely visionary, or symbolic reading of Christ’s indwelling deity; affirms real, historical, physical incarnation — directly reinforcing the baseline’s Critical ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ (incarnation) doctrine and excluding any avataric “appearance-only” pattern.
circumcision (of Christ)περιτομή (peritomē)circumcision (the physical rite; here, spiritual)the literal Jewish rite; by metaphor, the “circumcision” (removal) of the sinful nature accomplished in Christcircumcision”you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ” (2:11)ಸುನ್ನತಿ (sunnati) [NEW]Medium. Established Kannada Bible term for the physical rite; here used metaphorically for the spiritual removal of the sinful nature accomplished in union with Christ — must not be confused with the literal Jewish rite nor with any physical bodily marking practiced in local religious custom.
baptismβάπτισμα (baptisma)immersion, washingthe rite of Christian initiation, here signifying union with Christ’s death and resurrectionbaptism”buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him” (2:12)ದೀಕ್ಷಾಸ್ನಾನ (dīkṣāsnāna) [NEW]High. ದೀಕ್ಷೆ (dīkṣā) is the precise term for a Hindu or Lingayat guru-mediated initiation — most specifically, the Lingayat rite by which a devotee receives the personal iṣṭaliṅga from the guru and enters the faith. Christian baptism must be clearly distinguished: it signifies union with Christ’s own historical death and resurrection (a finished, once-for-all event applied to the believer), not an initiatory empowerment mediated by a human guru or the bestowal of a sacred object. Mandatory translator note recommended at every occurrence.
trespassesπαραπτώματα (paraptōmata)false steps, trespassesmoral failures/offensestrespasses, transgressions, sins”dead in your trespasses” (2:13)ಅಪರಾಧಗಳು (aparādhagaḷu) [NEW]Medium. Distinguish from generic ಪಾಪ [BASELINE REUSE] where the text specifically emphasizes concrete offenses/debts (connecting to the cheirographon image, 2:14).
made alive togetherσυζωοποιέω (syzōopoieō)to make alive together withto be granted resurrection life jointly with Christmade alive together with”God made you alive together with him” (2:13)ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಜೀವಂತಗೊಳಿಸಿದನು [NEW]High. Directly ties to the Critical baseline Resurrection doctrine (ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ) and to the assigned “Union with Christ” doctrine; this is a real participation in Christ’s own resurrection life, not a generic spiritual revival.
record of debtχειρόγραφον (cheirographon)handwritten document, IOUa legal certificate of indebtednessrecord of debt, certificate of debt, handwritten charge”canceling the record of debt that stood against us… nailing it to the cross” (2:14)ಸಾಲದ ಪತ್ರ (sālada patra) [NEW]Medium/High. A vivid, unique Pauline financial-legal metaphor: the debt is entirely CANCELLED at the cross, in a single decisive act — distinct from the popular Hindu conception of a karmic ledger that must be worked off gradually across lifetimes. This can be leveraged as a point of positive contrast: total, immediate, once-for-all cancellation vs. incremental karmic repayment.
legal demands / regulationsδόγματα (dogmata)decrees, ordinancesbinding regulations or decrees, whether legal (Mosaic) or the false teachers’ ascetic ruleslegal demands, decrees, regulations”the record of debt… with its legal demands” (2:14); “why… do you submit to regulations” (2:20)ವಿಧಿಗಳು (vidhigaḷu) [NEW]Medium. Kept distinct from ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ [BASELINE REUSE — law, reserved for Torah specifically] since δόγματα here has a broader/different referent (possibly including the false teachers’ additional ascetic rules, 2:21).
disarmed / triumphingἀπεκδυσάμενος / θριαμβεύσας (apekdysamenos / thriambeusas)having stripped off / having led in triumphal processionChrist stripping hostile powers of their authority and publicly displaying his victory over them, in the image of a Roman military triumphdisarmed, stripped, triumphing over, made a public spectacle”he disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (2:15)ನಿಶ್ಶಸ್ತ್ರಗೊಳಿಸಿ … ಜಯೋತ್ಸವ ಮಾಡಿದನು [NEW]High. The Roman military “triumph” (a victorious general’s public procession displaying defeated enemies) is a culturally distant image requiring brief explanatory framing. Positive point of contact: Karnataka’s own coastal Bhuta Kola tradition (ritual engagement with and binding of local spirits) shows a cultural intuition that hostile spiritual powers exist and must be dealt with — but Paul’s claim is that Christ has ALREADY, DECISIVELY, and PERMANENTLY defeated and publicly humiliated every hostile power at the cross, once for all; no ongoing ritual binding, placation, or human intermediary is needed or possible.
shadow / substanceσκιά / σῶμα (skia / sōma, second sense)shadow / substance-realitya foreshadowing outline vs. the solid reality it points toshadow, foreshadowing / substance, reality”these are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ” (2:17)ನೆರಳು / ನಿಜಸ್ವರೂಪ [NEW — note σῶμα here rendered DIFFERENTLY from ದೇಹ used for “body” at 1:18, 1:24, to avoid confusion]Medium. Translators must use a distinct Kannada word for this second sense of σῶμα (ನಿಜಸ್ವರೂಪ, “true form/reality”) rather than ದೇಹ (body), since the same Greek word carries two different senses within one letter.
worship of angelsθρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων (thrēskeia tōn angelōn)religious veneration of angelscultic worship directed toward angelic/intermediary beingsworship of angels”insisting on… worship of angels” (2:18)ದೇವದೂತರ ಆರಾಧನೆ (dēvadūtara ārādhane) [NEW]Critical. Direct collision with Karnataka’s widespread veneration of intermediary spiritual beings — village guardian deities (grāma devate), local guardian spirits, and the coastal Tulu Bhuta/Daiva tradition — and with a folk-Christian temptation toward excessive angel or saint veneration. Paul explicitly forbids worship directed at any created spiritual intermediary; worship belongs to Christ alone, who holds supremacy over every such power (1:16, 2:10).
self-made religion / will-worshipἐθελοθρησκία (ethelothrēskia)self-chosen/self-willed worshipreligious devotion and asceticism generated by human will rather than commanded or empowered by Godself-made religion, will-worship, self-imposed piety”these have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism… but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh” (2:23)ಸ್ವಇಚ್ಛಾ ಆರಾಧನೆ (svēcchā ārādhane) [NEW]High. Must be distinguished carefully from Lingayat kayaka theology’s affirmation of disciplined, dignified sacred work — the risk runs in a specific direction: Paul’s target is asceticism pursued AS A MEANS of controlling sinful desire or attaining spiritual status, which the text itself says achieves nothing against “the indulgence of the flesh.” This is not a blanket critique of disciplined religious practice, but of self-generated religious performance offered in place of (rather than flowing from) union with Christ.
severity to the body / asceticismἀφειδία σώματος (apheidia sōmatos)unsparing treatment of the bodyharsh bodily self-denialseverity to the body, harsh treatment of the bodySame context as above (2:23)ಶರೀರಕ್ಕೆ ಕಠಿಣ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ [NEW]Medium. Standard ascetic-practice vocabulary; risk as above.
head (repeated)κεφαλή (kephalē)see 1:18 abovesee 1:18 abovehead”the Head, from whom the whole body… grows” (2:19); “who is the head of all rule and authority” (2:10)ತಲೆ [same as 1:18]Critical (see 1:18 rationale).

Directly carries the assigned “Union with Christ” doctrine and connects to the Critical Resurrection doctrine; the believer’s own new life is grounded in a real participation in Christ’s own historical, bodily resurrection — a settled, already-accomplished status, not a future hoped-for cyclical rebirth nor a mystical stage on the way to eventual merger with the divine.
seek / set mind on things aboveτὰ ἄνω ζητεῖτε / φρονεῖτε (ta anō zēteite / phroneite)seek / set your mind on the things abovereordering priorities and affections around the risen, exalted Christseek the things above; set your minds on things above”seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God” (3:1-2)ಮೇಲಿನವುಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿರಿ / ಮೇಲಿನವುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಡಿರಿ [NEW]Medium/High. Risk of assimilation to generic Indian renunciate ideals (vairāgya, detachment from worldly affairs as an end in itself, or sannyāsa). Must be anchored specifically to union with the risen, exalted, personal Christ (“where Christ is, seated…”), not a general other-worldly disengagement — a distinction meaningful given kayaka theology’s affirmation of engaged worldly work and the household code that immediately follows in the same chapter.
seated at the right hand of Godἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θεοῦ καθήμενος (en dexia tou theou kathēmenos)sitting at God’s right handthe position of supreme honor, authority, and completed workseated at the right hand of God”where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God” (3:1)ದೇವರ ಬಲಗಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದಾನೆ [NEW]Medium. Standard exaltation imagery; connects Christ’s Lordship (ಕರ್ತ, baseline) to his completed redemptive work.
died / hidden with Christἀπεθάνετε / κέκρυπται (apethanete / kekryptai)you died / has been hiddenthe believer’s old identity has ended; new life is now concealed, secure, in Christyou have died; your life is hidden with Christ in God”you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (3:3)ನೀವು ಸತ್ತಿದ್ದೀರಿ … ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನೊಂದಿಗೆ ದೇವರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ [NEW]Critical. Core statement of the “Union with Christ” doctrine — the old self has genuinely and decisively ended (paired with 3:9’s “put off the old self”), and the believer’s true life is now secure in permanent, personal relationship with God through Christ, awaiting open manifestation at Christ’s appearing (3:4) — not a dissolving of personal identity into an impersonal divine ground, but a hiding/securing of a distinct personal life within God’s own keeping.
appear / gloryφανερωθῇ / δόξα (phanerōthē / doxa)be made manifest / glorythe future public disclosure of Christ and, with him, believerswhen Christ appears… you also will appear with him in glory”When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory” (3:4)ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷನಾಗುವಾಗ … ಮಹಿಮೆಯಲ್ಲಿ [NEW, ಮಹಿಮೆ per BASELINE REUSE — glory]High. ಮಹಿಮೆ reused exactly per baseline; must retain personal, relational glory shared with a distinct, personal Christ, not an impersonal radiance or dissolving illumination.
put to death (vices)νεκρώσατε (nekrōsate, from nekroō)put to death, mortifydecisive, active putting-to-death of sinful practicesput to death, mortify”put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry” (3:5)ಸಾಯಿಸಿರಿ [NEW]High. A vivid, decisive command (not gradual suppression); note the striking identification of “covetousness” with “idolatry” (πλεονεξία … ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰδωλολατρία) — a direct theological equation worth preserving for its polemical force in a culturally rich devotional-image environment.
vice listπορνεία, ἀκαθαρσία, πάθος, ἐπιθυμία κακή, πλεονεξία (porneia, akatharsia, pathos, epithymia kakē, pleonexia)sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, covetousnesscatalogue of sins rooted in disordered desiresexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, covetousness/greed”what is earthly in you…” (3:5)ಜಾರತ್ವ, ಅಶುದ್ಧತೆ, ಕಾಮಾಭಿಲಾಷೆ, ದುರಾಶೆ, ಲೋಭ [NEW]Medium. Standard NT vice-list vocabulary; low doctrinal ambiguity beyond consistent, non-euphemistic rendering.
wrath of Godὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ (orgē tou theou)God’s wrathGod’s righteous judgment against sinwrath of God”on account of these the wrath of God is coming” (3:6)ದೇವರ ಕೋಪ [NEW]Medium. Standard; must retain personal, moral, righteous judgment (not an impersonal cosmic retribution mechanism akin to karma).
put off / old selfἀπέθεσθε / παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος (apethesthe / palaios anthrōpos)you put off / old man/selfdecisively removing, as one removes a garment, one’s former corrupt identity and practicesput off / the old self, the old man”put off the old self with its practices” (3:9)ಹಳೆಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕಿ [NEW]High. Carries the assigned “Putting Off the Old Self” doctrine directly; must be read alongside 3:3’s “you have died,” reinforcing that this is a decisive, completed act (past tense in Greek), the outworking of a change already accomplished in union with Christ, not an ongoing self-effort project of gradual self-perfection.
put on / new selfἐνδυσάμενοι / [νέος/καινός] ἄνθρωπος (endysamenoi / [neos/kainos] anthrōpos)having put on / new man/selfclothing oneself with a new, Christ-shaped identityput on / the new self, the new man”and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” (3:10)ಹೊಸ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೀರಿ [NEW]High. Carries the assigned “Putting On the New Self” doctrine directly; note the direct echo of εἰκών (image, 1:15) — the new self is renewed “after the image of its Creator,” tying the ethical transformation of chapter 3 back to Christ’s own supremacy as the perfect Image in chapter 1. This renewal restores believers to Christ-like, God-reflecting humanity in ongoing relationship, never a dissolving or transcending of individual personhood (again distinct from the Aikya-merger concern flagged in the baseline).
renewedἀνακαινούμενον (anakainoumenon)being renewed, made newongoing, progressive Spirit-empowered transformationbeing renewed”which is being renewed in knowledge” (3:10)ನವೀಕರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿರುವ [NEW]High. Connects to baseline’s ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ (sanctification) doctrine; the Spirit’s ongoing transforming work, not self-directed moral self-improvement or ascetic stage-advancement.
no Greek/Jew, etc.Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος (Hellēn kai Ioudaios, peritomē kai akrobystia, barbaros, Skythēs, doulos, eleutheros)Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, freean exhaustive list of the ancient world’s deepest identity-markers, all rendered irrelevant to standing “in Christ”Greek/Jew, circumcised/uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free”here there is not Greek and Jew… but Christ is all, and in all” (3:11)ಗ್ರೀಕ್ ಮತ್ತು ಯೆಹೂದ್ಯ, ಸುನ್ನತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸುನ್ನತಿಯಿಲ್ಲದವರು, ಅನಾಗರಿಕ, ಸಿಥಿಯನ್, ದಾಸ, ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ [NEW]High. Directly parallels the baseline’s High-risk “Unity of Jews and Gentiles” doctrine and its explicit note on caste-hierarchy resonance in Karnataka; the total erasure of every identity-marker “in Christ” (including the socially fraught δοῦλος/ἐλεύθερος slave/free distinction) must be retained without softening, given genuine social resonance with the Lingayat reform movement’s own historic rejection of caste hierarchy — an area of real partial convergence, followed by the sharper distinctive claim that “Christ is all, and in all” (a unique, exclusive Christological center, not a general egalitarian ethic detached from Christ).
chosen onesἐκλεκτοί (eklektoi)chosen onesthose selected by God’s sovereign initiativeGod’s chosen ones, the elect”put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved…” (3:12)ದೇವರಿಂದ ಆಯ್ಕೆಗೊಂಡ ಜನರು [NEW, uses BASELINE root — ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ, election]High. Directly connects to baseline’s Effectual Calling / Election doctrine; must retain God’s sovereign, personal choice, never impersonal fate (ಹಣೆಬರಹ) or karma-determined destiny.
virtue listσπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότης, ταπεινοφροσύνη, πραΰτης, μακροθυμία (splagchna oiktirmou, chrēstotēs, tapeinophrosynē, prautēs, makrothymia)compassionate affections, kindness, lowliness of mind, gentleness, patiencethe character believers “put on,” modeled on Christcompassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience”put on then… compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience” (3:12)ಕರುಣೆಯ ಹೃದಯ, ದಯೆ, ದೀನಮನಸ್ಸು, ಸಾಧುತ್ವ, ದೀರ್ಘಶಾಂತಿ [NEW]Medium. ದೀನಮನಸ್ಸು (humility) requires care: must be presented as flowing from a secure, gift-given identity (“God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved,” 3:12), not enforced social self-abasement or caste-conditioned submission.
forbearing / forgivingἀνεχόμενοι / χαριζόμενοι (anechomenoi / charizomenoi)bearing with / graciously forgivingmutual patience and grace-rooted forgiveness among believersbearing with one another, forgiving each other”bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive” (3:13)ಸಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು, ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ [NEW]Medium/High. Note χαρίζομαι shares its root with χάρις (grace, ಕೃಪೆ, baseline); the forgiveness commanded here flows directly from the grace-forgiveness already received from the Lord — reinforcing the baseline’s Grace-vs-merit distinction (this forgiveness is modeled on unearned favor, not a negotiated reconciliation of equals).
love / bond of perfectionἀγάπη / σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος (agapē / syndesmos tēs teleiotētos)love / bond of completenesslove as the unifying, completing virtue that binds all others togetherlove, which binds everything together in perfect harmony”and above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (3:14)ಪ್ರೀತಿ … ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆಯ ಬಂಧ [NEW]Medium. Note the Kannada root ಪೂರ್ಣ recurs here (as in ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆ/ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ elsewhere in the letter for τέλειος/πλήρωμα); translators should keep τελειότης (completeness/maturity, this verse) and πλήρωμα (fullness of deity, 1:19/2:9) terminologically distinguishable in Kannada (ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆ vs. ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ) despite the shared root, to avoid conflating an ethical virtue (love completing the virtues) with the unique Christological claim (the fullness of deity in Christ).
peace of Christ (rule/umpire)βραβευέτω (brabeuetō, from brabeuō)let it act as umpire, award the prizeto arbitrate or decide, as a judge in athletic contestslet the peace of Christ rule”let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body” (3:15)ಶಾಂತಿಯು … ತೀರ್ಪುಗಾರನಾಗಿರಲಿ / ಆಳಲಿ [NEW, ಶಾಂತಿ per BASELINE REUSE — peace]Medium. The vivid “umpire/arbiter” image (peace deciding contested matters of the heart) is worth preserving in translator notes even if the final rendering uses a more general “rule/govern” verb for readability.
called (in one body)ἐκλήθητε (eklēthēte)you were calledGod’s summons uniting believers into a single corporate bodycalled, to which you were called”to which indeed you were called in one body” (3:15)ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿರಿ [BASELINE REUSE — called]High (per baseline).
word of Christ dwellὁ λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐνοικείτω (ho logos tou Christou enoikeitō)let the word of Christ dwellScripture/teaching about Christ richly indwelling the communitylet the word of Christ dwell in you richly”let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom” (3:16)ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ವಾಕ್ಯವು … ವಾಸಿಸಲಿ [NEW, echoes κατοικέω/ವಾಸಿಸು from 1:19]Medium. Connects to the baseline’s Inspiration of Scripture doctrine; a rich, communal indwelling of Christ’s own teaching, not a private mystical experience.
psalms, hymns, spiritual songsψαλμοῖς, ὕμνοις, ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς (psalmois, hymnois, ōdais pneumatikais)psalms, hymns, spiritual songsthe range of corporate musical worshippsalms, hymns, spiritual songs”singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (3:16)ಕೀರ್ತನೆಗಳು, ಸ್ತುತಿಗೀತೆಗಳು, ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ಹಾಡುಗಳು [NEW]Medium. ಕೀರ್ತನೆ is the same word used for the devotional compositions (kirtane) of the Haridasa bhakti tradition (Purandara Dasa, Kanaka Dasa) — a genuine and valuable point of cultural contact for congregational song, but must be clarified as praise addressed exclusively to the Lord Jesus Christ (3:17, “in the name of the Lord Jesus”), not a generic devotional-song genre interchangeable with kirtane addressed to Krishna or another chosen deity.
in the name of the Lord Jesusἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου Ἰησοῦ (en onomati kyriou Iēsou)in the name of the Lord Jesusacting under Christ’s authority and for his gloryin the name of the Lord Jesus”whatever you do… do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus” (3:17)ಕರ್ತನಾದ ಯೇಸುವಿನ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ [BASELINE REUSE — ಕರ್ತ, ಯೇಸು]Critical (per baseline, Lordship of Christ).
submit / be subjectὑποτάσσεσθε (hypotassesthe)be subject to, submit tovoluntary ordering of oneself under another’s authority, here within the “in the Lord” household relationshipsubmit, be subject”wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord” (3:18)ಅಧೀನರಾಗಿರಿ (adhīnarāgiri) [NEW]High. Carries the assigned “Household Codes” doctrine directly. Must be translated and taught alongside the immediately paired commands (husbands love their wives, 3:19; fathers not provoke their children, 3:21; masters treat servants justly, 4:1) so that the Christ-centered, reciprocal framing of the passage (“as is fitting in the Lord”) is not collapsed into either an unqualified permanent social hierarchy or a purely modern egalitarian erasure of the text’s actual asymmetric address.
husbands love wivesἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας (agapate tas gynaikas)love your wivesself-giving love modeled on Christ’s love (cf. the parallel household code at Eph 5:25)love your wives”husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them” (3:19)ಹೆಂಡತಿಯರನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಿರಿ [NEW, uses ಪ್ರೀತಿ from 3:14]High. Same doctrinal category as above.
children obey / fathers not provokeὑπακούετε τοῖς γονεῦσιν / μὴ ἐρεθίζετε (hypakouete tois goneusin / mē erethizete)children, obey your parents / fathers, do not provokemutual household duties within “in the Lord”children, obey your parents; fathers, do not provoke your children”children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord… fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged” (3:20-21)ಮಕ್ಕಳೇ, ತಂದೆತಾಯಿಗಳಿಗೆ ವಿಧೇಯರಾಗಿರಿ / ತಂದೆಗಳೇ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕೆರಳಿಸಬೇಡಿ [NEW]High. Note ὑπακούω here (children obeying parents) is the SAME root verb underlying the baseline’s “obedience of faith” (ὑπακοὴ πίστεως) but used in a different, domestic-ethical sense; translators must not conflate ordinary filial obedience with the specific soteriological “obedience that flows from faith” doctrine — context disambiguates, but reviewers should flag for clarity.
bondservants obey mastersδοῦλοι, ὑπακούετε τοῖς κυρίοις (douloi, hypakouete tois kyriois)slaves/servants, obey your mastersthe specific address to those in institutional bondage within the household codebondservants, obey your earthly masters”bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord” (3:22)ದಾಸರೇ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಲೌಕಿಕ ಯಜಮಾನರಿಗೆ ವಿಧೇಯರಾಗಿರಿ [NEW]High. ದಾಸ is the precise word Karnataka’s Haridasa bhakti tradition (Purandara Dasa, Kanaka Dasa, and the wider “Dasa Sahitya” movement) uses as an honored devotional self-designation — “servant/slave of the Lord” (Vishnu/Krishna). Two distinct referents must be kept clear in translator guidance: (1) Colossians 3:22-4:1 addresses actual, contemporary institutional slavery/bonded service, a real socio-economic relationship; while (2) Colossians 3:24’s climactic reframing — “you are serving the Lord Christ” — deliberately universalizes the servant-identity so that EVERY believer, free or bound, is a ದಾಸ of Christ. This creates a genuine and valuable point of contact with the Haridasa devotional self-understanding (a life lived in service to a personal Lord) that should be taught explicitly, while ensuring 3:22’s specific address to bonded laborers is not obscured or spiritualized away.
sincerity of heart / fearing the Lordἁπλότητι καρδίας / φοβούμενοι τὸν κύριον (haplotēti kardias / phoboumenoi ton kyrion)singleness of heart / fearing the Lordundivided motive, reverent regard for Christ’s authoritysincerity of heart, fearing the LordSame context (3:22)ಯಥಾರ್ಥ ಹೃದಯ / ಕರ್ತನಿಗೆ ಭಯಪಡುತ್ತಾ [NEW, ಕರ್ತ per BASELINE REUSE]Medium. Standard.
working for the Lord, not menὡς τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις (hōs tō kyriō kai ouk anthrōpois)as to the Lord and not to menreorienting ordinary labor as an act of worship offered to Christas working for the Lord, not for men”whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (3:23)ಕರ್ತನಿಗಾಗಿ, ಮನುಷ್ಯರಿಗಾಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲ [NEW, ಕರ್ತ per BASELINE REUSE]High. Note the striking resonance with — and necessary distinction from — the Lingayat kayaka ethic (sacred, dignified work as worship), already flagged in the baseline (see doctrine registry, “separation unto God’s service”): here, ordinary labor performed even by an enslaved person is dignified as worship offered to a personal Lord — a genuine point of contact — but the reward is explicitly “the inheritance” (κληρονομία, 3:24, reusing the term from 1:12) received as a gift consequent upon serving Christ, not a worked-for status earned through the labor itself.
inheritance as rewardτὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν τῆς κληρονομίας (tēn antapodosin tēs klēronomias)the recompense of the inheritancethe reward that IS the inheritance already promisedthe reward of the inheritance”knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward” (3:24)ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆಯ ಪ್ರತಿಫಲ [NEW, uses ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ from 1:12]Medium/High. See ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ discussion at 1:12; must retain that this “reward” is the inheritance graciously granted in Christ, not wages earned in a strict merit-transaction.
justice and fairness (masters)τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα (to dikaion kai tēn isotēta)that which is just and the equality/fairnessmasters’ reciprocal obligation to treat servants with justice and equityjustice and fairness”masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven” (4:1)ನ್ಯಾಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಾನತೆ [NEW]Medium/High. The household code’s closing verse holds masters accountable to a heavenly Master, subverting any reading of the code as endorsing an unaccountable, permanent social hierarchy; deserves explicit teaching alongside 3:22-24.

Term (Eng.)Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual meaningKannada renderingRisk & rationale
steadfast in prayerπροσκαρτερεῖτε τῇ προσευχῇ (proskartereite tē proseuchē)continue steadfastly in prayerpersistent, devoted prayercontinue steadfastly in prayer, devote yourselves to prayer”continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving” (4:2)ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿರಿ [NEW]Low/Medium. Connects to baseline’s Prayer and Intercession doctrine (ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ); direct access to God through Christ, distinct from ritual puja or devotional kirtane practice directed toward a chosen personal deity.
open door for the wordθύραν τοῦ λόγου (thyran tou logou)a door for the wordan opportunity for gospel proclamationopen door for the word, opportunity to speak”praying at the same time for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ” (4:3)ವಾಕ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯುವುದು [NEW]Medium. Connects to baseline’s Mission to the Nations / Evangelism doctrines (ಸುವಾರ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಸಾರ); note the recurrence of μυστήριον (mystery, ρಹಸ್ಯ) here — reinforcing that the “mystery” is precisely what is to be PROCLAIMED OPENLY, not kept esoteric.
walk in wisdom toward outsidersπεριπατεῖτε ἐν σοφίᾳ πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω (peripateite en sophia pros tous exō)walk in wisdom toward those outsideprudent, winsome conduct toward non-believerswalk in wisdom toward outsiders”walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time” (4:5)ಹೊರಗಿನವರ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಜ್ಞಾನದಿಂದ ನಡೆಯಿರಿ [NEW, ಜ್ಞಾನ per Chapter 1 rendering of σοφία]Medium. Connects to baseline’s Evangelism doctrine; use non-confrontational, witness-oriented framing given Karnataka’s religious plurality and communities’ pride in their own reform/devotional traditions (per baseline’s evangelism note).
speech seasoned with saltὁ λόγος … ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος (ho logos … halati ērtymenos)speech seasoned with saltgracious, engaging, discerning speechlet your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt”let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (4:6)ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮಾತು ಉಪ್ಪಿನಿಂದ ಹದಗೊಂಡಂತೆ ಕೃಪಾಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿರಲಿ [NEW, ಕೃಪೆ per BASELINE REUSE]Low/Medium. Standard idiom requiring cultural equivalence check; “seasoned with salt” (wit/discernment) should be rendered for natural Kannada comprehension while preserving the grace-word (κεχαρισμένος-root) connection to ಕೃಪೆ.
fellow servant / fellow prisonerσύνδουλος / συναιχμάλωτος (syndoulos / synaichmalōtos)fellow slave/servant / fellow captiveco-laborers sharing Paul’s ministry and, in some cases, his imprisonmentfellow servant, fellow bondservant / fellow prisoner”Tychicus… a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord” (4:7); “Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you” (4:10)ಜೊತೆ ಸೇವಕ / ಜೊತೆ ಸೆರೆಯಾಳು [NEW]Low. Standard; note ಸೇವಕ (servant) here overlaps with ದಾಸ discussion (3:22) — both describe devoted service to Christ, reinforcing the “servant of Christ” identity applied even to Paul’s free co-workers, not only to those in literal bondage.
encourage (hearts)παρακαλέσῃ τὰς καρδίας (parakalesē tas kardias)encourage/comfort the heartspastoral comfort and strengtheningencourage your hearts”that he may encourage your hearts” (4:8)ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸುವುದು [BASELINE REUSE — exhort]Low (per baseline).
church in the houseἡ κατ’ οἶκον αὐτῆς ἐκκλησία (hē kat’ oikon autēs ekklēsia)the church according to her housea local congregation meeting in a private homethe church in her house”give my greetings… to Nympha and the church in her house” (4:15)ಆಕೆಯ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಭೆ [NEW, ಸಭೆ per BASELINE REUSE — church]Medium (per baseline, church). Notes early church polity — a congregation, not yet a temple-building institution; consistent with baseline’s flag against ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ/ಗುಡಿ (Hindu temple) for ಸಭೆ.
ministry received in the Lordτὴν διακονίαν ἣν παρέλαβες ἐν κυρίῳ (tēn diakonian hēn parelabes en kyriō)the ministry you received in the Lorda commissioned service to be fulfilledthe ministry that you have received in the Lord”fulfill the ministry that you have received in the Lord” (4:17, to Archippus)ಕರ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದ ಸೇವೆ [NEW, ಕರ್ತ per BASELINE REUSE]Low/Medium. Standard; connects to Apostleship/Ministry doctrine category (baseline).
grace be with youἡ χάρις μεθ’ ὑμῶν (hē charis meth’ hymōn)grace be with youclosing benedictiongrace be with you”Grace be with you” (4:18)ಕೃಪೆ ನಿಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗಿರಲಿ [BASELINE REUSE — ಕೃಪೆ]High (per baseline). Final word of the letter, echoing its opening greeting (1:2) — consistency required.

Summary of Full-Book Coverage

  • Chapter 1 (1:1-29): treated in full above, including the core passage (1:15-20) with maximal verse-by-verse depth. All load-bearing terms identified.
  • Chapter 2 (2:1-23): treated in full above. This chapter carries the assigned doctrines “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily” (2:9) and “Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism” (2:8, 2:16-23) most intensively and contains the highest concentration of Critical-risk new terminology in the book (πλήρωμα, θεότης, στοιχεῖα, θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων).
  • Chapter 3 (3:1-4:1): treated in full above. Carries the assigned doctrines “Union with Christ,” “Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New,” and “Household Codes.” No chapter is without new load-bearing vocabulary in this letter — Colossians is compact and term-dense throughout.
  • Chapter 4 (4:2-18): treated in full above. Lower doctrinal density than chapters 1-3 (largely personal greetings and travel/ministry logistics), but still contributes load-bearing terms connecting to Mission/Evangelism and Prayer doctrines, plus the important closing benediction reprising ಕೃಪೆ (grace). No chapter of Colossians is silently omitted.
