Doctrine Analysis
11 — Doctrine Analysis: 2 Timothy 1–4
This document is the full-book doctrine matrix for 2 Timothy, required by the PRD Phase 1 mandate that every chapter of the curriculum book — not only the core passage — be analyzed for doctrine and translation risk. It is built to be fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (2 Timothy v1): the same 19 doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing appear here, expanded with per-chapter passage mapping and translation-risk rationale for Phase 2 planning.
The core passage, 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5, is the theological anchor of the curriculum (Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture; Guarding Sound Doctrine; The Charge to Preach the Word), but every chapter of the epistle is analyzed below so that no doctrinally load-bearing material outside the anchor passage is silently omitted.
Part A — Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Coverage
Chapter 1 (1:1–18)
| Verses | Doctrine(s) active | Risk | Translation risk notes | Review routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1–2 (greeting: grace, mercy, peace; apostleship; “promise of life”) | Grace; Faithful Transmission of the Gospel (apostolic office); Lordship and Deity of Christ | High/High/Critical | Standard epistolary opening but “according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus” must not be flattened to a generic blessing; ಕೃಪೆ/ಕರುಣೆ/ಶಾಂತಿ triad follows baseline + new ಕರುಣೆ (mercy). | Human theologian |
| 1:3–5 (Paul’s conscience; unfeigned faith inherited through Lois, Eunice, Timothy) | Faith; Faithful Transmission of the Gospel | High/High | ನಂಬಿಕೆ must read as personal trust in Christ transmitted through a real family line, not a generalized pious temperament (ಭಕ್ತಿ-collision risk applies even here, pre-empting ch.3). | Human theologian |
| 1:6–7 (stir up the gift; spirit of power, love, sound mind) | Perseverance under Suffering; Faithful Transmission of the Gospel (gift of God, singular) | High/High | ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ required (never ಶಕ್ತಿ). ದೇವರ ವರ (singular gift) must be distinguished from the baseline’s plural ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ವರಗಳು doctrinal category. | Human theologian |
| 1:8–10 (not ashamed; called with a holy calling not according to works; grace given before the world began; abolished death, brought life and immortality to light through the gospel) | Divine Calling; Grace; Perseverance under Suffering; Gospel; Resurrection of Christ (immortality) | Critical/High/High/High/Critical | Among the strongest anti-merit statements in the epistle; ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕರೆ must originate wholly in God, prior to and apart from works. ಅಮರತ್ವ (immortality) must be presented as a gift disclosed through the gospel event, not an innate Vedantic ātman property. | Human theologian |
| 1:11–12 (appointed preacher, apostle, teacher; “I know whom I have believed”; committed unto him against that day) | Faithful Transmission of the Gospel; Assurance of God’s Faithfulness | High/High | ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪ (the deposit) makes its first appearance here (1:12) — assurance rests on God’s ability to keep it, not Timothy’s or Paul’s performance. | Human theologian |
| 1:13–14 (hold fast the form of sound words; guard the good deposit by the Holy Spirit) | Guarding Sound Doctrine; Faithful Transmission of the Gospel | High/High | ”Sound words” anticipates ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ (4:3); the guarding verb ಕಾಪಾಡು must be paired consistently with the deposit noun across 1:12, 1:14, and 2:2. | Human theologian |
| 1:15–18 (Phygellus and Hermogenes turned away; Onesiphorus’s faithfulness; mercy in that day) | Apostasy and False Teachers; Assurance of Reward (proleptic); Grace | Critical/Critical/High | First concrete named instance of turning away, contrasted with named faithfulness — establishes the pattern of personal examples (Demas, Onesiphorus) that recurs through ch.4. | Human theologian |
Chapter 1 summary: every verse block carries doctrinal weight; no section is doctrine-neutral. Highest-risk material: 1:8–10 (calling/grace/immortality) and 1:12–14 (the deposit, first occurrence).
Chapter 2 (2:1–26)
| Verses | Doctrine(s) active | Risk | Translation risk notes | Review routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2:1–2 (be strong in grace; entrust to faithful men who shall teach others also) | Grace; Faithful Transmission of the Gospel | High/High | The four-generation transmission chain (Paul→Timothy→faithful people→others) is the doctrine’s textual anchor; ಒಪ್ಪಿಸು (entrust) must match ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪ’s noun form exactly. | Human theologian |
| 2:3–7 (soldier, athlete, farmer metaphors; endure hardship) | Perseverance under Suffering | High | Three vocational metaphors reinforcing ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸುವುದು; no syncretism risk in the metaphors themselves, but the endurance frame must stay tied to God’s power (1:8), not stoic self-reliance. | Human theologian |
| 2:8–10 (remember Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, raised from the dead, according to my gospel; suffering as an evildoer; enduring for the elect’s sake) | Resurrection of Christ; Davidic Covenant (seed of David, exact baseline phrase); Gospel; Perseverance under Suffering | Critical/High/High/High | ”My gospel” (2:8) names one specific historical announcement (Davidic descent + resurrection); ದಾವೀದನ ವಂಶದಿಂದ must render identically to the Romans 1:3 baseline phrase. | Human theologian |
| 2:11–13 (“faithful saying”: died with him, live with him; if we suffer, we shall reign; if we deny him, he will deny us; if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful) | Assurance of God’s Faithfulness; Faith; Assurance of Reward (reign with him) | High/High/Critical | God’s faithfulness is grounded in his own unchanging character (“he cannot deny himself”), not the believer’s fluctuating performance — distinct from incremental shatsthala-style spiritual progress. | Human theologian |
| 2:14–18 (charge before the Lord not to strive about words; rightly dividing the word of truth; profane and vain babblings; word spreads like gangrene; Hymenaeus and Philetus: resurrection already past) | Guarding Sound Doctrine; Apostasy and False Teachers; Resurrection of Christ | High/Critical/Critical | The Hymenaeus/Philetus heresy is the book’s own in-text example of mistranslation-as-heresy — MANDATORY translator note required distinguishing this as condemned error, not a valid allegorical/spiritual reading of resurrection. | Human theologian |
| 2:19–21 (foundation of God stands sure; the Lord knoweth them that are his; vessels of gold/silver/wood/earth; purge himself, meet for the master’s use) | Providence; Church as God’s Household; Sanctification | High/Medium/High | ದೇವರ ಅಸ್ತಿವಾರ (foundation) must read as personal, purposive divine governance unshaken by false teaching, not impersonal cosmic order or ಹಣೆಬರಹ fatalism. Self-purging (2:21) is responsive cooperation with the Spirit, not self-directed shatsthala ascent. | Human theologian (2:19, 2:21) / Native speaker (2:20 vessels as household image) |
| 2:22–26 (flee youthful lusts; follow righteousness, faith, love, peace; avoid foolish questions; servant of the Lord must not strive but be gentle; correcting opponents; God peradventure will give repentance; recover out of the snare of the devil) | Faith; Righteousness (adjacent); Grace (repentance as gift); Apostasy and False Teachers | High/Critical(adjacent)/High/Critical | 2:25’s “God may perhaps grant repentance” extends grace even to opponents — repentance itself is God’s gift, not self-generated merit; reinforces the doctrine already flagged for 1:9. | Human theologian |
Chapter 2 summary: the densest doctrinal chapter after the core passage. Contains the book’s only explicit named heresy (2:16–18) and the transmission-chain anchor verse (2:2).
Chapter 3 (3:1–17) — includes core passage 3:14–17
| Verses | Doctrine(s) active | Risk | Translation risk notes | Review routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:1–5 (perilous times in the last days; catalogue of vices; lovers of self/money/pleasure; having a form of godliness but denying its power) | Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days; Godliness and Authentic vs. Empty Religious Form | Critical/High | ಅಂತ್ಯ ದಿನಗಳು is the doctrine’s anchor term. “Form of godliness” (3:5) is the single highest-collision-risk phrase in the book: ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ (never bare ಭಕ್ತಿ) mandatory with translator note at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 3:6–9 (creep into houses, lead captive silly women laden with sins; ever learning, never able to come to the knowledge of the truth; Jannes and Jambres; folly made manifest) | Apostasy and False Teachers; Truth (adjacent to inspiration doctrine) | Critical/High | ಸತ್ಯ (truth) as antonym of “myths/fables” (4:4) is foreshadowed here; the contrast between true and empty religious knowledge must be preserved without disparaging Kannada narrative traditions generically. | Human theologian |
| 3:10–13 (Paul’s example: doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience, persecutions; all who live godly shall suffer persecution; evil men and seducers wax worse) | Perseverance under Suffering; Godliness and Authentic vs. Empty Religious Form; Apostasy and False Teachers | High/High/Critical | 3:12’s promise is universal and unqualified (“all that will live godly…shall suffer persecution”) — must not be softened into a conditional or occasional experience. | Human theologian |
| 3:14–15 (continue in the things learned; known the holy scriptures from a child, able to make wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus) — CORE PASSAGE BEGINS | Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture; Salvation (baseline); Faith | Critical/Critical/High | ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥ(ಗಳು) must render both ἱερὰ γράμματα (3:15) and γραφή (3:16) with one consistent Kannada phrase; salvation-through-faith link must retain baseline ರಕ್ಷಣೆ/ನಂಬಿಕೆ exactly. | Human theologian |
| 3:16–17 (all scripture given by inspiration of God, profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly furnished) — CORE PASSAGE | Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture; Guarding Sound Doctrine (doctrine/reproof/correction); Righteousness (baseline, “instruction in righteousness”) | Critical/High/Critical | ದೇವರಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತ is THE anchor term of the doctrine and the entire curriculum — mandatory translator note distinguishing it from vachana/kirtane/ಕಾವ್ಯಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ inspiration claims. ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ (complete) must avoid a self-attainment reading. | Human theologian |
Chapter 3 summary: contains both the curriculum’s most acute syncretism risk (3:5, godliness/ಭಕ್ತಿ collision) and the doctrinal anchor of the whole book (3:16, God-breathed Scripture). Every verse from 3:1 onward is core-passage-adjacent or core-passage itself; no section of chapter 3 is doctrine-neutral.
Chapter 4 (4:1–22) — includes core passage 4:1–5
| Verses | Doctrine(s) active | Risk | Translation risk notes | Review routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:1–2 (I charge thee before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and doctrine) — CORE PASSAGE | The Charge to Preach the Word; Lordship and Deity of Christ; Assurance of Reward (appearing, kingdom); Guarding Sound Doctrine | High/Critical/Critical/High | The solemn charge (ಆಣೆಯಿಟ್ಟು ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಿಸುವಿಕೆ) has oath-level, courtroom solemnity invoking Christ’s exclusive judgeship — must not be softened to friendly pastoral suggestion. Reprove/rebuke/exhort triad kept as three distinct verbs. | Human theologian |
| 4:3–4 (time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; heap up teachers to their own lusts; itching ears; turn away from the truth unto fables) — CORE PASSAGE | Apostasy and False Teachers; Guarding Sound Doctrine | Critical/High | ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ’s “healthy” metaphor must be retained to preserve the medical health/disease contrast with 2:17’s gangrene image. “Itching ears” idiom rendered by natural Kannada equivalent, not literal calque. | Human theologian |
| 4:5 (watch in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry) — CORE PASSAGE ENDS | The Charge to Preach the Word; Perseverance under Suffering | High/High | ಸೌವಾರ್ತಿಕ (evangelist) is coined transparently from baseline ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ; must read as a distinct ministry office, not merely “one who is generically good news-bearing.” | Native speaker review |
| 4:6–8 (I am now ready to be offered, poured out as a drink offering; time of my departure at hand; fought the good fight, finished the course, kept the faith; henceforth laid up a crown of righteousness; the righteous Judge shall give at that day; not to me only but to all that love his appearing) | Assurance of Reward; Righteousness (baseline, “crown of righteousness”); Lordship and Deity of Christ (righteous Judge); Faith | Critical/Critical/Critical/High | The summary verse of the whole doctrine. ಪಾನಬಲಿಯಾಗಿ ಸುರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವುದು must retain the specific “life poured out” sense without collapsing into generic Hindu puja/homa offering categories. ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆಯ ಕಿರೀಟ must be presented as consistent with imputed righteousness (Romans baseline), never as self-earned merit resembling shatsthala attainment. | Human theologian |
| 4:9–13 (Demas forsook me, having loved this present world; Crescens, Titus, Luke, Mark, Tychicus; bring the books, and especially the parchments) | Apostasy and False Teachers (Demas, personal negative example); Christian Fellowship/Church as God’s Household (baseline pattern); Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture (adjacent: reverence for the parchments/scrolls) | Medium/Medium/Critical(adjacent) | Demas is the negative-example counterpart to Onesiphorus (1:16–18) and Paul himself (4:7) — the personal-example pattern established in ch.1 recurs here at the book’s close. | Native speaker review (fellowship/greetings) / Human theologian (Demas as apostasy exemplar) |
| 4:14–15 (Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil; the Lord reward him according to his works; of whom be thou ware also; he hath greatly withstood our words) | Apostasy and False Teachers; Lordship and Deity of Christ (the Lord as judge of works, proleptic of 4:1, 4:8) | Critical/Critical | Personal enemy named alongside doctrinal warning; reinforces that opposition to sound doctrine has real, named, historical faces, not merely an abstract category. | Human theologian |
| 4:16–18 (at my first answer no man stood with me…notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me…delivered me out of the mouth of the lion…the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen) | Perseverance under Suffering; Lordship and Deity of Christ; Assurance of Reward (heavenly kingdom); Glory (baseline doxology) | High/Critical/Critical/High | Christ personally “stood with me and strengthened me” — an exclusive, relationally near sovereign, not a devotional lord whose follower’s destiny is eventual merger/dissolution (Aikya) into him. Closing doxology reuses baseline ಮಹಿಮೆ. | Human theologian |
| 4:19–22 (greetings to Prisca and Aquila, household of Onesiphorus; Erastus, Trophimus; come before winter; final greetings; “The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen”) | Church as God’s Household; Grace; Lordship and Deity of Christ | Medium/High/Critical | Closing greetings are doctrinally light in new content but must preserve the baseline consistency rule: identical rendering of grace and of ಕರ್ತ across all closing benedictions. Explicitly reviewed; no new terminology required beyond baseline reuse. | Native speaker review |
Chapter 4 summary: contains the core passage (4:1–5), the doctrinal high point of Assurance of Reward (4:6–8, 4:16–18), and the closing personal material (4:9–22), which is explicitly reviewed here and confirmed to introduce no new doctrine-bearing terms beyond baseline reuse (grace, Lord, church-as-household).
Part B — Full Doctrine Matrix (Whole-Book, Consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json)
| # | Doctrine | Kannada doctrine name | Risk | Supporting passages (2 Timothy) | Translation risk | Review routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture | ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥದ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟುತ್ವ | Critical | 3:14–15, 3:16–17 | ದೇವರಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತ is the doctrine’s anchor term; must be distinguished from vachana literature, Haridasa kirtane, and generic ಕಾವ್ಯಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ. Losing this distinction reduces Scripture’s unique claim to one more inspired regional literature among many. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Guarding Sound Doctrine | ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡುವುದು | High | 1:13–14, 2:2, 2:14–18, 4:2–4 | ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ must retain the medical “healthy” metaphor to preserve contrast with 2:17’s gangrene image; a bland “good teaching” rendering flattens the health/disease warrant for vigilance. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Faithful Transmission of the Gospel | ಸುವಾರ್ತೆಯ ನಂಬಿಗಸ್ತ ಪ್ರಸಾರ | High | 1:5, 1:12, 1:14, 2:2 | ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪ must retain its legal/financial “trust to be returned intact” force; obscuring the four-generation custodial chain (2:2) risks reframing this as flexible guru-to-disciple reinterpretation rather than faithful custodianship. | Human theologian |
| 4 | The Charge to Preach the Word | ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಾರುವ ಆಜ್ಞೆ | High | 4:1–5 | The solemn charge and Christ’s judgeship must retain oath-level, courtroom solemnity; softening severs the charge’s binding authority from Christ’s exclusive judgeship. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Perseverance under Suffering | ಬಾಧೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಳ್ಮೆ | High | 1:6–8, 1:12, 2:3, 2:9–10, 2:12, 3:11–12, 4:5, 4:17 | ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸುವುದು and “not ashamed” must be grounded in ದೇವರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ (never ಶಕ್ತಿ), not stoic self-reliance or fatalism; 3:12’s universal promise must not be softened to a conditional. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days | ಅಂತ್ಯ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಧರ್ಮಭ್ರಷ್ಟತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಳ್ಳು ಬೋಧಕರು | Critical | 2:16–18, 2:25–26, 3:1–9, 3:13, 4:3–4, 4:10, 4:14–15 | Hymenaeus/Philetus (2:18) directly attacks the Critical resurrection doctrine and requires mandatory translator note as condemned error. εὐσέβεια/“godliness” (3:5) requires ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ (never bare ಭಕ್ತಿ) with mandatory notes at each occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Assurance of Reward | ಪ್ರತಿಫಲದ ಭರವಸೆ | Critical | 4:6–8, 4:18 | ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆಯ ಕಿರೀಟ must be presented as consistent with, not contradicting, imputed righteousness received by faith; ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆ must never be assimilated to avatāra-descent theology. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Resurrection of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ | Critical | 2:8, 2:11–13, 2:18 | ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. This book uniquely supplies its own in-text heresy (2:18) requiring unmistakable contrast between true doctrine and condemned error within the same document. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Divine Calling (Holy Calling) | ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕರೆ | High | 1:9 | 1:9 is among the epistle’s strongest anti-merit statements; ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕರೆ must originate wholly in God prior to and apart from works, distinguished from devotee-initiated shatsthala ascent and Haridasa dasa-adoption patterns. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Grace | ಕೃಪೆ | High | 1:2, 1:9, 1:16, 1:18, 2:1, 2:25 | ಕೃಪೆ must stand against both the karma-merit economy and the Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic; 2:25 extends grace to repentance itself, even for opponents. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Faith | ನಂಬಿಕೆ | High | 1:5, 1:12, 2:13, 2:18, 2:22, 3:8, 3:10, 3:15, 4:7 | ನಂಬಿಕೆ never ಭಕ್ತಿ; personal trust in Christ, inherited through a family line and kept to the end, not generalized pious disposition. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Gospel | ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ | High | 1:8, 1:10, 2:8–9 | ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ must be distinguished from any general positive religious announcement; “my gospel” (2:8) names one specific historical event for which Paul suffers as a criminal. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Lordship and Deity of Christ (as Judge and Deliverer) | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವತ್ವ | Critical | 1:2, 1:8, 4:1, 4:8, 4:14, 4:17–18, 4:22 | ಕರ್ತ never softened to ಸ್ವಾಮಿ. Christ personally stands with, strengthens, and judges — exclusive, presently reigning, relationally near, never an eventual Aikya-merger figure. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Godliness and Authentic vs. Empty Religious Form | ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಜವಾದ ಆರಾಧನೆ | High | 3:5, 3:12 | The single most acute syncretism risk in the book: bare ಭಕ್ತಿ is exactly the devotional-surrender category 3:5 warns could be mistaken for godliness’s empty “form.” Mandatory translator note at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Sanctification (Vessels Set Apart for Honor) | ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ | High | 2:20–21 | Self-purging must be read as responsive cooperation with the Spirit’s sanctifying work already flagged in the Romans baseline, not self-directed shatsthala ascent toward Aikya. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Assurance of God’s Faithfulness (Not Contingent on Ours) | ದೇವರ ನಂಬಿಗಸ್ತಿಕೆಯ ಭರವಸೆ | High | 1:12, 2:13, 2:19 | Assurance rests on God’s unchanging character (“he cannot deny himself”), not the believer’s fluctuating performance or incremental shatsthala-style progress. | Human theologian |
| 17 | Kingdom of God / Heavenly Kingdom | ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ / ಪರಲೋಕ ರಾಜ್ಯ | Medium | 4:1, 4:18 | God’s/Christ’s sovereign reign and heavenly consummation, not territorial or political; low ambiguity beyond consistent baseline pattern and ಪರಲೋಕ rendering. | Native speaker review |
| 18 | Church as God’s Household (Mixed Vessels, Fellow Workers) | ದೇವರ ಮನೆತನವಾಗಿ ಸಭೆ | Medium | 2:19–21, 4:9–21 | A new-covenant household community named by many individual fellow-workers, not a caste-segregated assembly or temple-based ritual institution. | Native speaker review |
| 19 | Providence (God’s Unshaken Purposes Amid False Teaching) | ದೇವರ ಪರಿಪಾಲನೆ | High | 2:19 | ದೇವರ ಅಸ್ತಿವಾರ must read as personal, purposive divine governance unshaken by false teaching, not impersonal cosmic order or ಹಣೆಬರಹ fatalism. | Human theologian |
Part C — Explicit Full-Coverage Confirmation
Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book coverage mandate, the following confirms that every chapter and every major section of 2 Timothy has been reviewed for doctrine content, including sections that carry lower new-term density:
- 1:1–2 (epistolary greeting): reviewed; carries Grace, Lordship, and (via “promise of life”) Resurrection/Assurance overtones — not doctrine-neutral, included above.
- 2:3–7 (soldier/athlete/farmer metaphors): reviewed; contributes reinforcing imagery to Perseverance under Suffering but no new Critical/High terminology beyond what is already registered.
- 4:9–13, 4:19–22 (travel plans, personal requests, closing greetings): reviewed explicitly; confirmed to introduce no new doctrine-bearing terminology beyond baseline reuse (grace, ಕರ್ತ, church-as-household patterns) and the negative-example function of Demas (4:10), which is captured under Apostasy and False Teachers. These sections are noted here precisely so they are not silently omitted from the analysis, consistent with the PRD’s requirement that low-load chapters/sections be explicitly marked as reviewed rather than skipped.
- All 4 chapters (1, 2, 3, 4) are represented in Part A with verse-level doctrine mapping; no chapter is omitted.
Part D — Consistency Statement
This document introduces no doctrine, risk tier, or review-routing assignment that contradicts assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (2 Timothy v1). All 19 doctrines, their risk levels (Critical: 5 — Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture, Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days, Assurance of Reward, Resurrection of Christ, Lordship and Deity of Christ; High: 12; Medium: 2; Low: 0), and their review routing (17 doctrines to human theologian, 2 to native speaker review) are reproduced above with full chapter-by-chapter passage support added for Phase 2 planning. Where this document’s per-doctrine Critical/High count differs numerically from the registry’s summary block (which totals Critical:4/High:13 against the same 17-theologian/2-native-speaker total), the authoritative per-doctrine risk field in doctrine_risk_registry.json — reproduced exactly in Part B above — governs; this matrix does not alter any individual doctrine’s assigned tier.
This document depends on analysis/08_core_glossary.md for term-level detail and must be read together with it before Phase 1 Step 5 (Language Package assembly).
Critical Risk Doctrines
Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Kannada name: ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥದ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟುತ್ವ
Key terms: scripture, god_breathed, profitable, doctrine, reproof, correction, man_of_god, complete, thoroughly_furnished
Review routing: Human theologian
ದೇವರಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತ (God-breathed, 3:16) is the doctrine’s anchor term and must be distinguished with special care from three genuinely revered but categorically different Karnataka literary-religious traditions: the vachana literature of the 12th-century Sharana poet-saints (revered as arising from mystical experience but never claimed as God’s own spoken breath), Haridasa devotional kirtane (treasured praise-poetry, not claimed as verbally divine in origin), and the generic Kannada literary notion of ಕಾವ್ಯಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ (‘poetic inspiration’, aesthetic not verbal-divine). Losing this distinction would reduce Scripture’s unique claim to just one more inspired religious literature among Karnataka’s many treasured traditions.
Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Kannada name: ಅಂತ್ಯ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಧರ್ಮಭ್ರಷ್ಟತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಳ್ಳು ಬೋಧಕರು
Key terms: last_days, perilous_times, resurrection_already_past_heresy, godliness, form_of_godliness, will_not_endure_sound_doctrine, own_lusts, heap_up_teachers, itching_ears, truth, fables_myths, snare_of_the_devil, evil_men_seducers, forsaken_loved_present_world
Review routing: Human theologian
The Hymenaeus/Philetus heresy (2:18, resurrection ‘already past’) is rated Critical because it directly attacks the baseline’s Critical resurrection doctrine by allegorizing bodily resurrection into a merely spiritual, already-accomplished event — a distortion Kannada readers whose background traditions readily accommodate symbolic/mystical ‘resurrection’ language are at particular risk of missing as condemned error rather than valid interpretation. Separately, εὐσέβεια (‘godliness,’ 3:5, 3:12) poses a MAJOR High-risk collision: the natural Kannada word ಭಕ್ತಿ is exactly the devotional-surrender category (Haridasa Krishna-bhakti, Lingayat ishtalinga devotion) that 3:5 warns could be mistaken for, or substituted as, the ‘form’ or even the substance of godliness; ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ (qualified with the explicit theistic ದೈವ-) is required with mandatory translator notes at each occurrence.
Assurance of Reward
Kannada name: ಪ್ರತಿಫಲದ ಭರವಸೆ
Key terms: poured_out_as_drink_offering, departure, fought_good_fight_triad, crown_of_righteousness, righteous_judge, love_his_appearing, appearing, heavenly_kingdom
Review routing: Human theologian
ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆಯ ಕಿರೀಟ (crown of righteousness) is rated Critical because ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ is itself the baseline’s Critical justification term (never ಧರ್ಮ, never earned merit); this future reward, given by the ನೀತಿವಂತನಾದ ನ್ಯಾಯಾಧೀಶ (righteous Judge), must be presented as consistent with — not a contradiction of — imputed righteousness received by faith (Romans 4 baseline), or the doctrine collapses into a self-earned-merit picture resembling the Lingayat shatsthala path’s stage-by-stage attainment. ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆ (appearing) must also never be assimilated to recurring avatāra-descent theology.
Resurrection of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ
Key terms: resurrection, seed_of_david, resurrection_already_past_heresy
Review routing: Human theologian
ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ must never be rendered ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. The doctrine is directly attacked within this book itself by the Hymenaeus/Philetus heresy (2:18), making this the one baseline Critical doctrine for which 2 Timothy supplies its own in-text cautionary example of mistranslation-as-heresy; translators must render both the true doctrine (2:8) and the false teaching about it (2:18) with unmistakable contrast.
Lordship and Deity of Christ (as Judge and Deliverer)
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವತ್ವ
Key terms: lord, judge_living_and_dead, righteous_judge
Review routing: Human theologian
ಕರ್ತ must never be softened to ಸ್ವಾಮಿ (a guru/Lingayat ಜಂಗಮ address suggesting one honored teacher among several). Christ here is the one who personally ‘stood with me and strengthened me’ (4:17) and will judge the living and the dead (4:1) — an exclusive, presently-reigning, relationally near sovereign, not a devotional lord whose follower’s ultimate destiny is merger (Aikya) into him.
High Risk Doctrines
Guarding Sound Doctrine
Kannada name: ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡುವುದು
Key terms: sound_doctrine, doctrine, guard, rightly_dividing_word_of_truth, profane_vain_babblings, word_spreads_like_gangrene, foundation_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ (sound/healthy doctrine) must retain ὑγιαίνουσα’s medical ‘healthy’ metaphor so that its contrast with 2:17’s γάγγραινα (gangrene) image for false teaching survives translation; a bland ‘good teaching’ rendering would flatten this health/disease contrast and weaken the doctrine’s warrant for active vigilance rather than passive tolerance of doctrinal variety.
Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Kannada name: ಸುವಾರ್ತೆಯ ನಂಬಿಗಸ್ತ ಪ್ರಸಾರ
Key terms: good_deposit, guard, entrust, gift_of_god_singular, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪ (the entrusted deposit) must retain its legal/financial ‘trust to be returned intact’ force; a looser paraphrase (‘the good thing,’ ‘the teaching’) would obscure the four-generation chain of custodial transmission (2:2: Paul→Timothy→faithful people→others also) that grounds this doctrine as faithful custodianship rather than creative reinterpretation, a risk especially acute where oral guru-to-disciple transmission (as in both Haridasa and Lingayat teaching lineages) carries a different, more flexible authority structure.
The Charge to Preach the Word
Kannada name: ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಾರುವ ಆಜ್ಞೆ
Key terms: solemn_charge, judge_living_and_dead, preach, the_word, in_season_out_of_season, reprove_rebuke_exhort, longsuffering, evangelist, ministry, make_full_proof
Review routing: Human theologian
The solemn charge (ಆಣೆಯಿಟ್ಟು ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಿಸುವಿಕೆ) invoking God and Christ as witnesses, and Christ’s role as ಜೀವಿತರನ್ನೂ ಸತ್ತವರನ್ನೂ ನ್ಯಾಯತೀರಿಸುವ (judge of the living and the dead), must retain oath-level, courtroom solemnity; softening either phrase toward a friendly ministry suggestion would sever the charge’s binding authority from Christ’s own exclusive judgeship (ಕರ್ತ, Critical baseline term), reducing an apostolic mandate to optional pastoral advice.
Perseverance under Suffering
Kannada name: ಬಾಧೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಳ್ಮೆ
Key terms: endure_hardship, power_of_god, spirit_of_power_love_sound_mind, ashamed, immortality, persecution, delivered_from_lions_mouth, rekindle
Review routing: Human theologian
ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸುವುದು (endure hardship) and the recurring ‘be not ashamed’ motif must be grounded, per 1:8, in ದೇವರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ (God’s power, never ಶಕ್ತಿ — Karnataka’s Shakta tradition centered at Chamundeshwari names a distinct divine-feminine power) rather than in stoic self-reliance or fatalistic acceptance (ಹಣೆಬರಹ); 3:12’s universal, unqualified promise that all who live godly will suffer persecution must not be softened into a conditional or occasional experience.
Divine Calling (Holy Calling)
Kannada name: ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕರೆ
Key terms: called_calling, holy, grace
Review routing: Human theologian
1:9’s ‘who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace’ is among the strongest anti-merit statements in the epistle; ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕರೆ must be understood as originating wholly in God prior to and apart from human works, distinguished from the devotee-initiated Lingayat shatsthala path and the Haridasa pattern of a devotee choosing to become a dasa of a chosen deity.
Grace
Kannada name: ಕೃಪೆ
Key terms: grace, mercy, repentance
Review routing: Human theologian
ಕೃಪೆ must stand against both the general Hindu karma-merit economy and the Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic of disciplined sacred work and sharing; 2:25’s statement that God ‘may perhaps grant repentance’ extends grace even to opponents, reinforcing that repentance itself, not only initial salvation, is God’s gift rather than self-generated merit.
Faith
Kannada name: ನಂಬಿಕೆ
Key terms: faith, fought_good_fight_triad
Review routing: Human theologian
ನಂಬಿಕೆ must never be rendered ಭಕ್ತಿ, the devotional-surrender term central to both Haridasa Krishna-bhakti and Lingayat devotion to Shiva; this personal trust in Christ specifically is inherited through a family line (Lois, Eunice, Timothy, 1:5) and kept to the end (4:7), not a generalized pious disposition.
Gospel
Kannada name: ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ
Key terms: gospel, evangelist, preach
Review routing: Human theologian
ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ must be distinguished from any general positive religious announcement; Karnataka’s own devotional traditions each have ‘good teaching’ of their own, but ‘my gospel’ (2:8) names one specific historical announcement of Christ’s Davidic descent and resurrection, for which Paul himself suffers ‘as an evil doer, even unto bonds’ (2:9).
Godliness and Authentic vs. Empty Religious Form
Kannada name: ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಜವಾದ ಆರಾಧನೆ
Key terms: godliness, form_of_godliness
Review routing: Human theologian
This doctrine requires the most carefully qualified rendering in the whole curriculum: ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ (rather than bare ಭಕ್ತಿ) must be used for εὐσέβεια precisely because 3:5 warns against an empty ‘form’ of godliness — and bare ಭಕ್ತಿ is the very term most likely to be read by a Kannada Hindu-background, Haridasa-bhakti-background, or Lingayat-background reader as naming exactly the kind of ritual/devotional practice the verse says can exist without true power. Every occurrence requires a mandatory translator note.
Sanctification (Vessels Set Apart for Honor)
Kannada name: ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ
Key terms: vessels, holy
Review routing: Human theologian
The believer who ‘purges himself’ becomes a vessel ‘sanctified, and meet for the master’s use’ (2:21); this self-purifying action must be read as responsive cooperation with the Spirit’s sanctifying work already flagged High-risk in the Romans baseline, not a self-directed ascent through the Lingayat shatsthala stages toward Aikya, however much the outward disciplined behavior may resemble it.
Assurance of God’s Faithfulness (Not Contingent on Ours)
Kannada name: ದೇವರ ನಂಬಿಗಸ್ತಿಕೆಯ ಭರವಸೆ
Key terms: faith, foundation_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
2:13’s ‘if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself’ and 1:12’s ‘I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him’ ground assurance in God’s unchanging character rather than the believer’s fluctuating performance — distinct from the uncertain, incremental progress of the Lingayat shatsthala path, where advancement toward Aikya is a matter of ongoing personal spiritual attainment rather than a settled, gifted status secured by another’s faithfulness.
Providence (God’s Unshaken Purposes Amid False Teaching)
Kannada name: ದೇವರ ಪರಿಪಾಲನೆ
Key terms: foundation_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
ದೇವರ ಅಸ್ತಿವಾರವು ಸ್ಥಿರವಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಿದೆ (the foundation of God stands sure) must be read as God’s personal, purposive governance unshaken by Hymenaeus and Philetus’s error, not an impersonal cosmic order or fatalistic ಹಣೆಬರಹ (‘forehead-writing’) framework common in everyday Kannada explanatory speech.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Kingdom of God / Heavenly Kingdom
Kannada name: ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ / ಪರಲೋಕ ರಾಜ್ಯ
Key terms: kingdom_of_god, heavenly_kingdom, appearing
Review routing: Native speaker review
God’s/Christ’s sovereign reign and its heavenly consummation, not a territorial or political kingdom; low ambiguity beyond maintaining the established baseline pattern and rendering ‘heavenly’ consistently with ಪರಲೋಕ.
Church as God’s Household (Mixed Vessels, Fellow Workers)
Kannada name: ದೇವರ ಮನೆತನವಾಗಿ ಸಭೆ
Key terms: vessels, ministry
Review routing: Native speaker review
The visible church, pictured as a household containing vessels of differing honor and named by many individual fellow-workers in the closing greetings, is a new-covenant community, not a caste-segregated assembly or ritual institution built around a temple.
