Cross-Reference Analysis
09 — Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: Galatians
Method Note
This document maps every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological structure, and every parallel to other curricula in this language package (with priority attention to Romans, given the shared doctrinal core of justification by faith) across the full text of Galatians, chapter by chapter. It exists to prevent two failure modes in Phase 2: (1) translating a shared OT quotation or shared Pauline doctrine differently in Galatians than it was already rendered in Romans, breaking the cross-document consistency the baseline mandates; and (2) missing a typological or intertextual signal that a Kannada reader needs surfaced (e.g., via translator note) to avoid misreading Galatians’ argument through a competing cultural framework.
Column definitions:
- Passage — the Galatians reference under analysis.
- Theme — the doctrine(s) from this curriculum’s doctrine list that the passage carries.
- Related Character(s) — biblical persons named or implied.
- OT/NT Connection — the specific Scripture quoted, alluded to, or typologically connected, with citation.
- Translation Sensitivity — risk notes for Kannada rendering, cross-referencing

Section 1: Cross-Reference Matrix — Chapter by Chapter
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 1:1 | Paul’s Apostleship; Resurrection | Paul, God the Father, Jesus Christ | Resurrection language parallels Romans 1:4; Acts 2:24, 32; 1 Corinthians 15:4 | Reuse baseline ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ (Critical); apostleship framed as “not from man” — see 1:11-12 below. |
| Galatians 1:3-4 | The True Gospel versus False Gospels | Jesus Christ, God the Father | ”Who gave himself for our sins” echoes Isaiah 53:5-6, 10-12 (Servant bears sin); “to deliver us from the present evil age” echoes prophetic hope of an “age to come” contrasted with “this age” (cf. Daniel 2:44; also Romans 12:2) | ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ದುಷ್ಟ ಯುಗ (present evil age) risks conflation with cyclical yuga cosmology; flag per 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Galatians 1:6-9 | The True Gospel versus False Gospels | Paul, unnamed false teachers | The anathema-curse formula echoes covenant-curse language later quoted explicitly at Galatians 3:10 (Deuteronomy 27:26); structurally parallel to 2 Corinthians 11:4’s “different gospel” and 2 Corinthians 11:13-15’s false-apostle warning | ಶಾಪಗ್ರಸ್ತನಾಗಲಿ (anathema) must read as covenantal-judicial repudiation, prefiguring the Deuteronomy 27:26 curse-quotation two chapters later — translators should recognize this as an intentional inclusio-style echo Paul builds toward. |
| Galatians 1:11-12 | Paul’s Apostleship | Paul, Jesus Christ | ”Not from man… but through a revelation of Jesus Christ” — parallel pattern to prophetic call narratives (Jeremiah 1:4-10; Ezekiel 1-2; cf. also Acts 9:3-6, 22:6-10, 26:12-18) | ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆ (revelation) must convey direct divine disclosure, not accumulated human insight or guru-transmitted teaching. |
| Galatians 1:13-14 | Paul’s Apostleship | Paul | Historical background parallels Philippians 3:5-6 and Acts 22:3 (Paul’s Pharisaic zeal) | ಯೆಹೂದ್ಯ ಮತ / ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಗಳು — see 08_core_glossary.md notes on ಮತ vs. ಧರ್ಮ. |
| Galatians 1:15-16 | Paul’s Apostleship; Divine Calling | Paul, God, Jesus Christ (Son) | “Set apart before I was born, and called me by his grace” directly echoes Jeremiah 1:5 (“before I formed you in the womb I knew you… I appointed you a prophet”) and Isaiah 49:1, 5 (Servant “called me from the womb”); “to reveal his Son in me… among the Gentiles” echoes Isaiah 49:6 (“a light for the nations”) | Messianic-typological layer: Paul patterns his own prophetic commissioning on Servant-of-the-Lord language, reinforcing (not equating with) Christ’s unique Sonship. Reuse baseline ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ/ಕರೆ (Critical/High) and ಕೃಪೆ (High). |
| Galatians 1:18-24 | Paul’s Apostleship | Paul, Cephas (Peter), James the Lord’s brother | Narrative background parallel to Acts 9:26-30 | ಕೇಫ (Cephas)/ಪೇತ್ರ (Peter) — establish consistent proper-name usage; James distinguished from the apostle James son of Zebedee. |
Chapter 2
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 2:1-10 | Paul’s Apostleship; Unity of Jews and Gentiles (baseline doctrine, extended) | Paul, Barnabas, Titus, James, Cephas, John | Narrative parallel to the Jerusalem Council, Acts 15:1-29 (same underlying historical dispute over circumcision) | Titus’s non-compulsion to be circumcised (2:3) is the concrete case-example behind the abstract doctrine developed in chs. 3, 5-6. |
| Galatians 2:6 | Paul’s Apostleship | God, “those who seemed influential" | "God shows no partiality” is a near-verbatim echo of Deuteronomy 10:17 (“who is not partial”) and 2 Chronicles 19:7; identical phrase also occurs at Romans 2:11 | MANDATORY consistency: render identically to however Romans 2:11 rendered “God shows no partiality” in the Romans corpus, even though this exact English clause is not a translation_memory entry — flag for theologian confirmation of the existing Romans rendering before finalizing here. |
| Galatians 2:7-9 | Paul’s Apostleship; Unity of Jews and Gentiles | Paul, Peter/Cephas, James, John | Division of apostolic labor (circumcised/uncircumcised) parallels Acts 15:7-11; “pillars” (στῦλοι) echoes temple-pillar imagery (1 Kings 7:21, Jachin and Boaz) and anticipates Revelation 3:12 (“a pillar in the temple of my God”) | ಸ್ತಂಭಗಳು (pillars) — Low risk; keep the architectural metaphor plain, avoid importing Vedic temple-pillar (gopura) associations. |
| Galatians 2:11-14 | The True Gospel versus False Gospels | Paul, Cephas/Peter, Barnabas, “the circumcision party” | Behavioral inconsistency (ὑπόκρισις) narrative; conceptually parallel to Matthew 23:1-3 (Jesus on Pharisaic hypocrisy) | ಕಪಟ (hypocrisy) — Medium; must read as inconsistency between confessed truth and practiced behavior, not merely social awkwardness. |
| Galatians 2:15 | Justification by Faith | Paul, Peter | Background self-designation “Jews by nature, not Gentile sinners” reflects the boundary-marker mindset addressed throughout Romans 2-3 (esp. Romans 2:17-29) | Sets up the Core Passage; reuse baseline ಯೆಹೂದ್ಯರು / ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು. |
| Galatians 2:16 | Justification by Faith | Paul, Peter | Echoes Psalm 143:2 (“no one living is righteous before you”) in the phrase “by works of the law no flesh will be justified” — the identical Psalm 143:2 echo also lies behind Romans 3:20’s near-verbatim clause | CRITICAL cross-document consistency: Galatians 2:16’s “by works of the law no one will be justified” and Romans 3:20’s parallel clause both echo Psalm 143:2 and must use identical Kannada phrasing for “ಯಾವ ಶರೀರಿಯೂ ನೀತಿವಂತನಾಗಿ ನಿರ್ಣಯಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ” wherever both occur. |
| Galatians 2:20 | Crucified with Christ; Justification by Faith | Jesus Christ (Son of God), Paul | ”Who loved me and gave himself for me” echoes Isaiah 53:6, 12 (Servant “poured out his soul unto death,” LORD “laid on him the iniquity of us all”); directly parallel to Romans 5:8 (“Christ died for us”) and Romans 8:32 (“gave him up for us all”) | CRITICAL: render ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟನು (gave himself up) consistent with any existing Romans 8:32 rendering of παρέδωκεν; both are the same substitutionary-self-giving verb family. |
| Galatians 2:21 | Law and Grace; Justification by Faith | Paul | Sets up the “in vain” (δωρεάν) argument developed further at Galatians 3:21 (implicitly) and structurally parallel to Romans 3:31’s “do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means!” | ವ್ಯರ್ಥವಾಗಿ (in vain) — High; do not confuse with the “freely” sense of the same Greek root used in Romans 3:24. |
Chapter 3
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 3:1 | The True Gospel versus False Gospels; Crucified with Christ | Paul, the Galatians, Jesus Christ | ”Publicly portrayed as crucified” — no direct OT quotation, but many interpreters note a background typological resonance with the bronze serpent “lifted up” before Israel’s eyes (Numbers 21:8-9), a typology John 3:14 makes explicit elsewhere; Galatians itself does not state this typology | Present as optional background typology for lesson material, not as an exegetical claim embedded in the translation itself; do not import serpent-imagery into the Kannada rendering of this verse. |
| Galatians 3:6 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Justification by Faith | Abraham, God | DIRECT QUOTATION: Genesis 15:6, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” | CRITICAL — this is the identical Genesis 15:6 citation used at Romans 4:3. Reuse baseline ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ (imputed righteousness) rendering verbatim; the whole verse’s Kannada wording should match the existing Romans 4:3 Kannada rendering exactly, per baseline cross-document consistency rule. |
| Galatians 3:8 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Abraham, “the nations/Gentiles,” God | DIRECT (COMPOSITE) QUOTATION: Genesis 12:3 and Genesis 18:18, “In you shall all the nations be blessed”; described as Scripture itself “preaching the gospel beforehand” to Abraham | High — ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ (blessing); this composite citation is also the background text behind Romans 4:13-17’s Abraham-as-father-of-many-nations argument; keep “nations” rendering (ಜನಾಂಗಗಳು/ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು) consistent with baseline ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು. |
| Galatians 3:10 | The Law’s Purpose; The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | — | DIRECT QUOTATION: Deuteronomy 27:26, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them” | CRITICAL — ಶಾಪ (curse); see Section 4 below for the full Puranic-curse distinction; must render as impersonal covenantal-textual consequence, not a personal being’s momentary anger. |
| Galatians 3:11 | Justification by Faith; Law and Grace | — | DIRECT QUOTATION: Habakkuk 2:4, “The righteous shall live by faith” — identical quotation also anchors Romans 1:17, the Romans curriculum’s own thesis verse | CRITICAL cross-document rule: this clause MUST be rendered identically in Galatians 3:11 as it was rendered in Romans 1:17. Per baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents” table (12_ai_translation_requirements.md), Romans 1:16-17’s rendering is already locked as the curriculum’s thesis-statement wording; Galatians 3:11 inherits that exact wording without variation. |
| Galatians 3:12 | The Law’s Purpose | — | DIRECT QUOTATION: Leviticus 18:5, “The one who does them shall live by them” — the identical quotation also appears at Romans 10:5 | High — must render identically to the existing Romans 10:5 Kannada rendering; this verse is Paul’s proof-text that the law’s own internal logic is performance-based (“doing,” not “believing”), a contrast load-bearing for the whole Law and Grace doctrine. |
| Galatians 3:13 | The Law’s Purpose; Justification by Faith | Jesus Christ | DIRECT QUOTATION: Deuteronomy 21:23, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”; background typology to Isaiah 53:4-6 (Servant bearing curse/iniquity vicariously) | CRITICAL — ವಿಮೋಚಿಸಿದನು/ವಿಮೋಚನೆ (redeemed/redemption); “became a curse for us” is substitutionary atonement language requiring mandatory theologian review per baseline’s existing atonement-language escalation rule. |
| Galatians 3:14 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Abraham, Gentiles, Holy Spirit | Echoes Genesis 22:18 (“in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed”) alongside the 3:8 citation | Medium — ವಾಗ್ದಾನ (promise); reinforces the blessing-to-the-nations theme first introduced 3:8. |
| Galatians 3:16 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Abraham, Christ | Draws on the recurring Genesis “offspring/seed” promise formula (Genesis 12:7; 13:15; 17:8; 24:7), reading the collective-singular σπέρμα as pointing to a single individual, Christ | CRITICAL grammatical-theological argument; reuse ಸಂತಾನ (santāna) per 08_core_glossary.md; mandatory translator footnote explaining the singular/collective argument. |
| Galatians 3:17 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; The Law’s Purpose | Abraham, Moses (implied) | Chronological datum echoes Exodus 12:40 (430 years) | Low — chronological detail; no theological rendering risk beyond accurate numeral preservation. |
| Galatians 3:19 | The Law’s Purpose | Moses (implied mediator), angels | ”Put in place through angels by an intermediary” reflects a Second Temple Jewish tradition of angelic mediation at Sinai, echoed at Acts 7:53 and Hebrews 2:2, with OT background in the LXX of Deuteronomy 33:2 | Medium-High — ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ (mediator, Moses); must not be read as elevating Moses to a permanent guru-like mediating office; his mediatorship is time-bound to the law’s giving. |
| Galatians 3:22 | Universal Human Accountability (baseline doctrine, extended) | — | “Scripture imprisoned everything under sin” summarizes the argument of Romans 3:9-20 and 11:32 (“God has consigned all to disobedience”) | High — reuse baseline ಪಾಪ; this is a direct conceptual parallel to Romans’ universal-accountability doctrine, now applied specifically to explain the law’s negative, confining function. |
| Galatians 3:24-25 | The Law’s Purpose | — | παιδαγωγός custodial imagery has no direct OT citation but functions typologically as the fulfillment-shadow relationship later made explicit in Hebrews 10:1 (“the law… a shadow of the good things to come”) | High — ಪಾಲಕ (guardian); avoid “teacher/guru” renderings per 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Galatians 3:27-28 | Circumcision and the New Creation; Freedom in Christ | — | Baptismal “put on Christ” language parallel to Colossians 3:9-11 and Romans 6:3-4; the “neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female” formula parallels 1 Corinthians 12:13 and Colossians 3:11, and stands in deliberate typological reversal/fulfillment of the male-female distinction named at creation (Genesis 1:27) — now transcended in status-before-God terms without erasing creational distinctions | High — this verse’s scope (adding slave/free, male/female to Jew/Gentile) is broader than the baseline’s existing “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles” doctrine entry; flag for doctrine registry extension (see 10_biblical_theme_map.md). |
| Galatians 3:29 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Adoption and Sonship | Abraham | ”Heirs according to promise” echoes the inheritance promises of Genesis 15:4-5 and Genesis 17:7 | Medium-High — ವಾರಸುದಾರ (heir); pairs directly with ch. 4’s adoption argument. |
Chapter 4
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 4:1-2 | Adoption and Sonship; The Law’s Purpose | — | Greco-Roman legal-custodial custom (no OT citation); functions as continued παιδαγωγός-family imagery from 3:24-25 | Medium — continues the custodial-heir metaphor; no new doctrinal risk beyond 3:24-25. |
| Galatians 4:3, 9 | The Law’s Purpose | — | στοιχεῖα background parallels Colossians 2:8, 20 (same phrase, same Pauline concern about “elemental” religious systems, Jewish and pagan alike) | CRITICAL — ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಬೋಧನೆಗಳು; see 08_core_glossary.md; avoid astrological/pañcabhūta associations. |
| Galatians 4:4 | Incarnation; The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Sonship of Christ | God the Father, Jesus Christ (Son), Mary (implied, “born of woman”) | “Born of woman” echoes Genesis 3:15 (the proto-evangelium’s “offspring of the woman”) and resonates with Isaiah 7:14; “born under the law” affirms full historical incarnation into the Mosaic covenant context — directly PARALLEL to Romans 1:3, “descended from David according to the flesh,” Galatians’ and Romans’ respective primary incarnation texts | CRITICAL — reuse baseline ದೇವರ ಮಗ; never ಅವತಾರ. This verse and Romans 1:3 are the two central incarnation anchor-texts across both curricula and should receive coordinated translator notes. |
| Galatians 4:5 | Adoption and Sonship; The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | — | Reuse baseline ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ; directly parallel to Romans 8:15, 23 | High — see Section 4 below for the full Romans 8 parallel. |
| Galatians 4:6 | Adoption and Sonship | Holy Spirit, God the Father | VERBATIM PARALLEL: “Abba! Father!” — identical cry-formula at Romans 8:15 | CRITICAL cross-document consistency: must render identically to Romans 8:15’s ಅಬ್ಬಾ, ತಂದೆ combination. |
| Galatians 4:8 | Law and Grace; Freedom in Christ | The Galatians (formerly pagan) | “Those who by nature are not gods” echoes Deuteronomy 32:17, 21 (“no-gods”), Isaiah 44:9-20 (idol polemic), Jeremiah 2:11, and parallels 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 and 1 Corinthians 10:19-20 | High/Critical — reuse baseline ದೇವರು exclusivity framework; register should remain historical-descriptive of the Galatians’ own pre-conversion practice. |
| Galatians 4:19 | Adoption and Sonship | Paul, the Galatians, Christ | ”Until Christ is formed in you” — organic-formation image without direct OT citation; conceptually parallel to Romans 8:29 (“conformed to the image of his Son”) | Medium — ರೂಪುಗೊಳ್ಳುವುದು; relational transformation, not mystical merger; note the Romans 8:29 conceptual parallel for consistency of theological framing (though not identical wording required). |
| Galatians 4:21-31 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Freedom in Christ; Law and Grace | Abraham, Hagar, Sarah, Ishmael, Isaac | Sustained typological/allegorical use of Genesis 16:1-16; Genesis 17:15-21; Genesis 21:1-21 | High — flagged fully in Section 3 (Typology) below; this is the largest sustained OT narrative use in the epistle. |
| Galatians 4:27 | Freedom in Christ; The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Sarah (implied, “barren one”) | DIRECT QUOTATION: Isaiah 54:1, “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor!” | High — must be recognizable as a specific prophetic quotation with its own Isaianic eschatological-restoration context (post-exilic Zion’s future fruitfulness), not merely a generic proverb about barrenness. |
| Galatians 4:28 | Adoption and Sonship; The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Isaac | ”Like Isaac, children of promise” — direct narrative reference to Genesis 21:1-3; identical typological category (“children of promise,” Isaac) also used at Romans 9:7-9 | High — cross-document parallel; if Romans 9:7-9 has an established Kannada phrasing for “children of the promise,” reuse it here. |
| Galatians 4:29 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise; Flesh versus Spirit | Ishmael, Isaac | ”He who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit” — narrative background Genesis 21:9 (Ishmael “laughing at/mocking” Isaac) | Medium-High — first appearance of the flesh/Spirit contrast pattern (ch. 5’s major theme) applied retrospectively to the Genesis narrative; reuse ಶರೀರ/ಆತ್ಮ appropriately for the neutral-vs-moral sense distinctions already flagged in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Galatians 4:30 | Freedom in Christ; The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | Sarah (implied), Hagar, Ishmael, Isaac | DIRECT QUOTATION: Genesis 21:10, “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman” | Medium — reuse ಗುಲಾಮ (negative-sense slave term) per the ದಾಸ/ಗುಲಾಮ distinction established in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Galatians 4:26 | Freedom in Christ | — | “The Jerusalem above” resonates with Isaiah 54’s restoration hope (same chapter quoted at 4:27), Psalm 87, Ezekiel 40-48’s eschatological temple-city vision, and looks forward to Revelation 21:2, 10 (“the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down”) | Medium — ಮೇಲಣ ಯೆರೂಸಲೇಮ್; a real eschatological city/citizenship, not a mystical plane of consciousness. |
Chapter 5
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 5:1 | Freedom in Christ | Christ | No direct citation, but the whole freedom-from-slavery theme echoes the Exodus deliverance-from-Egypt pattern that undergirds all biblical liberation language (Exodus 20:2, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of… the house of slavery”) | Critical — ಗುಲಾಮಗಿರಿಯ ನೊಗ (yoke of slavery); the Exodus background may be surfaced pastorally in lesson material to show freedom-from-bondage as a whole-Bible pattern, not invented by Paul. |
| Galatians 5:3 | The Law’s Purpose | — | “Obligated to keep the whole law” conceptually parallels James 2:10 (“whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it”) | Medium. |
| Galatians 5:6 | Faith Working through Love; Circumcision and the New Creation | — | Structural parallel to Galatians 6:15 and 1 Corinthians 7:19 (“neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but keeping the commandments of God”) | Critical — reuse ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಾರ್ಯಸಾಧಿಸುವ ನಂಬಿಕೆ; must render consistently at both occurrences of this near-identical formula (5:6 and 6:15). |
| Galatians 5:14 | Faith Working through Love; Bearing One Another’s Burdens | — | DIRECT QUOTATION: Leviticus 19:18, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” — identical quotation also anchors Romans 13:9 | CRITICAL cross-document rule: must render identically to the existing Romans 13:9 Kannada rendering of this Leviticus citation. |
| Galatians 5:16-26 | Flesh versus Spirit; Fruit of the Spirit | Holy Spirit | Extensive conceptual (not direct-quotation) parallel to Romans 8:1-17’s flesh/Spirit contrast | High — see Section 4 below; while no shared quotation exists, the conceptual architecture (two competing “walks”/orientations) should be taught as continuous with Romans 8, and key baseline terms (ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, ಶರೀರಭಾವ) must track consistently. |
| Galatians 5:19-21 | Flesh versus Spirit | — | Vice-list genre parallels Romans 1:29-31 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 | Critical — see idolatry/sorcery entries in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Galatians 5:21 | Kingdom Mission (baseline doctrine, extended) | — | “Will not inherit the kingdom of God” parallels 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and 1 Corinthians 15:50 | High — reuse baseline ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ. |
| Galatians 5:22-23 | Fruit of the Spirit | Holy Spirit | Virtue-list genre parallels Romans 5:1-5 (a shorter chain: peace, hope, endurance, character) and Colossians 3:12-14; no single direct OT citation, but the organic “fruit” metaphor itself echoes wisdom-tradition tree/fruit imagery (Psalm 1:3; Jeremiah 17:7-8) | CRITICAL — ಆತ್ಮನ ಫಲ; see Section 4 and 08_core_glossary.md for the highest-priority karma-phala collision risk in the whole curriculum. |
Chapter 6
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 6:2 | Bearing One Another’s Burdens | Christ | ”The law of Christ” conceptually echoes John 13:34’s “new commandment… love one another” and 1 Corinthians 9:21 (“under the law of Christ”) | High — ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ನಿಯಮ; must use generic ನಿಯಮ, never ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ. |
| Galatians 6:7-8 | Flesh versus Spirit | — | Sowing/reaping wisdom-tradition imagery echoes Job 4:8, Proverbs 22:8, Hosea 8:7, and Hosea 10:12-13; directly parallel to 2 Corinthians 9:6’s Pauline reuse of the same image | CRITICAL — see Section 4; collides with the proverbial Kannada expression “ಬಿತ್ತಿದಂತೆ ಬೆಳೆ.” |
| Galatians 6:10 | Bearing One Another’s Burdens; Christian Fellowship (baseline doctrine) | — | “Household of faith” conceptually parallels Ephesians 2:19 (“household of God”) | Low-Medium. |
| Galatians 6:14 | Crucified with Christ | Jesus Christ (Lord) | Reuses μὴ γένοιτο (2:17) and the συσταυρόω “crucified” family (2:19-20); “boast… except in the cross” echoes Jeremiah 9:23-24 (“let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me”) and parallels 1 Corinthians 1:31 and 2 Corinthians 10:17 | Critical — reuse baseline ಕರ್ತ; render consistently with Galatians 2:19-20’s crucifixion language. |
| Galatians 6:15 | Circumcision and the New Creation | — | “New creation” (καινὴ κτίσις) echoes Isaiah 43:18-19 and Isaiah 65:17/66:22’s “new heavens and new earth”; identical phrase also occurs at 2 Corinthians 5:17; looks forward to Revelation 21:1, 5 | CRITICAL — ಹೊಸ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ; must render consistently with any existing 2 Corinthians 5:17 rendering in this language package, given the “parallels to other curricula” tag list includes 2 Corinthians. Avoid ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ-ಸ್ಥಿತಿ-ಲಯ cyclical cosmology associations. |
| Galatians 6:16 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (extended) | — | “The Israel of God” echoes the benediction pattern of Psalm 125:5 and Psalm 128:6 (“peace be upon Israel”); directly parallel to the debated referent of “Israel” in Romans 9:6 and Romans 11:26 | Medium-High — genuinely ambiguous referent (ethnic Israel? believing Jews? the whole Jew-and-Gentile church?); flag for theologian review, do not silently resolve; note the Romans 9-11 parallel debate. |
| Galatians 6:17 | Paul’s Apostleship | Paul, Jesus | ”Marks of Jesus” parallels Paul’s own suffering-catalogue at 2 Corinthians 11:23-25; stands in an ironic reverse-relationship to the Levitical prohibition on cultic self-marking (Leviticus 19:28, “you shall not… tattoo yourselves”) — Paul’s marks are involuntary persecution scars, not a forbidden or chosen cultic marking | High/Critical — ಯೇಸುವಿನ ಗುರುತುಗಳು; see 08_core_glossary.md’s devotional body-marking distinction (namam, vibhūti, ishtalinga). |
| Galatians 6:18 | Law and Grace (closing benediction) | Jesus Christ (Lord), Holy Spirit | Standard Pauline benediction form, parallel to Romans 16:20 and virtually every Pauline epistle’s closing | High/Critical — reuse baseline ಕೃಪೆ/ಕರ್ತ/ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ. |
Section 2: Messianic References Summary
| Passage | Messianic Content | Canonical Connection | Rendering Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galatians 1:15-16 | Paul’s prophetic-pattern calling to reveal God’s Son among the Gentiles | Isaiah 49:1, 5-6 (Servant called from the womb, sent as light to the nations) | The Son revealed IS the fulfillment the Servant songs anticipate; do not let Paul’s own call language blur into equivalence with Christ’s unique Sonship — Paul is patterned after, not equal to, the Servant-Messiah. |
| Galatians 3:8, 14, 16 | Abraham’s promised “seed” (singular) identified as Christ, through whom Gentile blessing comes | Genesis 12:3, 18:18, 22:18; 12:7, 13:15, 17:8, 24:7 | ಸಂತಾನ (santāna) collective-singular argument; Critical, mandatory footnote. |
| Galatians 3:13 | Christ “became a curse for us,” bearing the covenant-curse vicariously | Deuteronomy 21:23; typological background Isaiah 53:4-6 | Critical substitutionary-atonement language; mandatory theologian review. |
| Galatians 4:4 | ”God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law” — the incarnation as the fulfillment of appointed messianic timing | Genesis 3:15 (offspring of the woman); Isaiah 7:14; direct parallel Romans 1:3 | Critical; never ಅವತಾರ; coordinate rendering with Romans 1:3. |
| Galatians 2:20 | The Son of God “loved me and gave himself for me” — substitutionary self-giving | Isaiah 53:6, 12 | Critical; substitutionary atonement, coordinate with Romans 5:8, 8:32. |
Section 3: Typological Structures
| Type (OT) | Antitype/Fulfillment (Galatians) | Passage | Theological Point | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abraham’s faith credited as righteousness (Genesis 15:6) | All who have faith are Abraham’s true children | Galatians 3:6-9, 29 | Faith, not lineage or law-observance, is the true mark of Abrahamic sonship | Reuse ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ exactly per Romans 4:3; avoid any suggestion that Abraham’s faith was itself a meritorious “work.” |
| Isaac, child of promise, vs. Ishmael, child “according to the flesh” (Genesis 16, 21) | Believers as children of promise/Spirit, contrasted with law-reliant “children of the flesh” | Galatians 4:21-31 | Two ways of becoming God’s child: by ordinary human effort/plan (Hagar/law/Sinai) or by God’s own promised, Spirit-wrought act (Sarah/promise/Jerusalem above) | High — an allegory Paul himself explicitly authorizes (v.24, ἀλληγορούμενα) and controls; must not be extended into open-ended reader-generated allegorization beyond Paul’s own stated terms. |
| Hagar/Sinai vs. Sarah/Jerusalem above (Genesis 16, 21; cf. Exodus 19-20) | Two covenants: law-slavery vs. promise-freedom | Galatians 4:24-26 | The Sinai covenant, rightly understood in its own redemptive-historical place, still issues in “slavery” if clung to as a means of justification after Christ; the “Jerusalem above” covenant issues in freedom | Medium — must not be read as anti-Jewish/anti-Old-Testament as such; the argument is about reliance on law-works for justification, not a wholesale rejection of the Hebrew Scriptures Paul is himself quoting throughout. |
| The law as παιδαγωγός, a custodial household-slave escorting a minor heir (Greco-Roman legal-cultural type, applied to the Mosaic law) | The law’s temporary, custodial, disciplinary function, now completed in Christ | Galatians 3:23-25; 4:1-7 | The law was never meant to be a permanent state but a temporary guardianship until the promised heir (Christ, and believers in him) reached the “fullness of time” | High — ಪಾಲಕ; must not read as elevating the law (or, culturally, any guru/jangama-style perpetual teaching office) to permanent revered-teacher status. |
| Circumcision as the Abrahamic covenant sign (Genesis 17:9-14) | “New creation” — neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts, only the Spirit-wrought new birth | Galatians 5:6; 6:15 | The physical covenant sign is fulfilled/superseded by an inward, Spirit-given transformation (cf. Deuteronomy 30:6’s “circumcision of the heart,” Romans 2:29) | Critical — ಹೊಸ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ; the letter’s own climactic doctrinal statement, structurally parallel to Romans 2:29’s “circumcision of the heart” argument. |
| Bronze serpent lifted up for healing (Numbers 21:8-9) [optional background typology, not stated in the text itself] | Christ “publicly portrayed as crucified” before the Galatians’ own eyes | Galatians 3:1 (background only; John 3:14 makes this typology explicit elsewhere in Scripture) | Available as supplementary teaching material illustrating the pattern of a publicly displayed means of deliverance; should NOT be embedded into the Galatians 3:1 translation itself, since Paul does not invoke this image explicitly here | Low risk if kept as lesson-material background only, not as translated text content. |
Section 4: Parallels to Other Curricula (Especially Romans) — Shared Quotations and Rendering-Consistency Rules
Galatians and Romans share Paul’s authorship, core vocabulary, and — at several points — identical Old Testament quotations and near-identical doctrinal formulas. The following table gives the mandatory consistency rule for each shared item. Where the existing Romans Kannada rendering is not itself recorded verbatim in the baseline translation_memory.json (because it is an OT quotation rather than a glossary term), the rule is: confirm the already-published Kannada Bible standard rendering of that OT verse and use it identically in both curricula, while ensuring embedded glossary terms (righteousness, faith, law, etc.) follow translation_memory.json exactly within that quotation.
| Shared Text / Formula | Galatians Citation | Romans / Other Citation | Rendering-Consistency Rule | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Genesis 15:6 (“counted to him as righteousness”) | Galatians 3:6 | Romans 4:3 | Render identically; reuse baseline ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ verbatim in both | Critical |
| Habakkuk 2:4 (“the righteous shall live by faith”) | Galatians 3:11 | Romans 1:17 (curriculum thesis verse) | Render identically; Romans 1:16-17’s locked wording takes priority per baseline’s cross-document consistency table | Critical |
| Leviticus 18:5 (“the one who does them shall live by them”) | Galatians 3:12 | Romans 10:5 | Render identically | High |
| Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself”) | Galatians 5:14 | Romans 13:9 | Render identically | Critical |
| Deuteronomy 10:17-pattern (“God shows no partiality”) | Galatians 2:6 | Romans 2:11 | Render identically | High |
| ”Abba! Father!” (Aramaic + Greek) | Galatians 4:6 | Romans 8:15 | Render identically; reuse baseline ಅಬ್ಬಾ / ತಂದೆ exactly | Critical |
| Isaac as “child(ren) of promise” typology | Galatians 4:28 | Romans 9:7-9 | Use consistent phrasing for “children of the promise” across both | High |
| ”Israel of God” / debated referent of “Israel” | Galatians 6:16 | Romans 9:6; Romans 11:26 | Do not silently resolve; flag as shared exegetical ambiguity across both curricula, consistent treatment required | Medium-High |
| Incarnation anchor text (Son sent/born) | Galatians 4:4 | Romans 1:3 | Both are the primary incarnation texts of their respective letters; never ಅವತಾರ in either; coordinate translator notes | Critical |
| Christ’s substitutionary self-giving (“gave himself/gave him up”) | Galatians 1:4; 2:20 | Romans 5:8; Romans 8:32 | Use one consistent Kannada verb-family (ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟನು) across both curricula for παραδίδωμι in this sense | Critical |
| ”New creation” | Galatians 6:15 | 2 Corinthians 5:17 (curriculum tag list includes 2 Corinthians) | Render ಹೊಸ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ identically wherever this exact phrase recurs | Critical |
| Sowing/reaping proverb-image | Galatians 6:7-8 | 2 Corinthians 9:6 | Use a consistent Kannada sowing/reaping verb pair (ಬಿತ್ತು/ಕೊಯ್ಯು) across both; consistent translator note on the karma-proverb collision risk | Critical |
| Flesh vs. Spirit two-way contrast (conceptual, not a shared quotation) | Galatians 5:16-26 | Romans 8:1-17 | No verbatim-quotation rule applies, but key terms (ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, ಶರೀರಭಾವ) must track the same glossary entries used in Romans 8 | High |
| Justification-by-faith core verb (δικαιόω family) | Galatians 2:16 (×3), 17; 3:8, 11, 24; 5:4 | Romans 3:20, 24, 28; 4:2, 5; 5:1, 9 | Reuse baseline ನೀತಿವಂತರೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಣಯಿಸುವುದು verbatim at every occurrence in both curricula | Critical |
| ”Works of the law” (ἔργα νόμου) | Galatians 2:16 (×2); 3:2, 5, 10 | Romans 3:20, 27-28 | Reuse proposed ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು consistently; anchor to Mosaic boundary-markers in both curricula, never generalize to “good deeds” | Critical |
| Jerusalem Council narrative background | Galatians 2:1-10 | (Acts 15:1-29 — separate curriculum in tag list) | Ensure proper names (Barnabas, Titus, James, Cephas) render consistently if Acts curriculum is later processed | Medium |
Section 5: Citation Normalization Standard
All citations in this and downstream Phase 1/Phase 2 artifacts follow the format: Full English Book Name + space + Chapter:Verse, Arabic numerals, no abbreviations (e.g., “Galatians 2:16”, “Genesis 15:6”, “Deuteronomy 27:26”, “Habakkuk 2:4”, “Isaiah 54:1”, “2 Corinthians 5:17”). This format is normalized identically to the baseline’s existing citation convention in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md and converts to the Kannada Bible citation format (e.g., ಗಲಾತ್ಯದವರಿಗೆ 2:16, ಆದಿಕಾಂಡ 15:6) only at Phase 2 rendering time, with book names following the same established-Kannada-Bible-convention table the baseline provides (extended here with the following new book-name entries required by this analysis):
| English Book Name | Kannada Book Name |
|---|---|
| Galatians | ಗಲಾತ್ಯದವರಿಗೆ |
| Genesis | ಆದಿಕಾಂಡ |
| Exodus | ವಿಮೋಚನಕಾಂಡ |
| Leviticus | ಯಾಜಕಕಾಂಡ |
| Deuteronomy | ಧರ್ಮೋಪದೇಶಕಾಂಡ |
| Habakkuk | ಹಬಕ್ಕೂಕ |
| Isaiah | ಯೆಶಾಯ |
| Jeremiah | ಯೆರೆಮೀಯ |
| Hosea | ಹೋಶೇಯ |
| Psalms | ಕೀರ್ತನೆಗಳು |
| 2 Corinthians | 2 ಕೊರಿಂಥದವರಿಗೆ |
| Revelation | ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆ ಗ್ರಂಥ |
*Note: “Deuteronomy” (ಧರ್ಮೋಪದೇಶಕಾಂಡ) is the fixed, traditional Kannada Bible book title and contains the syllable ಧರ್ಮ only as part of this established proper book-name; this is a fixed citation convention, not a doctrinal term rendering, and does not conflict with the baseline’s prohibition on ಧರ್ಮ for “law” as a doctrinal concept (ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ remains the term used in running doctrinal text for “the Law/Torah”).
Summary of Coverage
Every chapter of Galatians (1-6) has been cross-referenced for OT quotations, allusions, messianic content, and typological structure. Ten shared-quotation/formula items with Romans (and one with 2 Corinthians) have been identified and given mandatory rendering-consistency rules. This document feeds directly into analysis/10_biblical_theme_map.md and into the eventual doctrine_risk_registry.json and translation_memory.json updates in later Phase 1 steps.
