Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: Colossians (Kannada Destination Language)
How to Read This Matrix
Each entry lists: the doctrine name (English and Kannada), risk tier, supporting passages from Colossians, the specific translation risk grounded in Karnataka’s religious landscape, and the review routing tier. Risk tiers and review routing are carried forward unchanged from assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — this document does not introduce new tiers or reclassify any doctrine; it organizes the same 25 doctrines by chapter and confirms full-book coverage.
Risk tier definitions (unchanged from baseline):
- Critical — Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision. Automated review sufficient.
Karnataka religious landscape reference frame (applied throughout): mainstream Hindu cosmology and karma-merit devotion; Haridasa Krishna-bhakti (coastal/Udupi-centered, kirtane devotional song, dāsa self-designation); Lingayat/Veerashaiva Shaivism (shatsthala stage path, Aikya final merger, kayaka-dasoha work ethic, iṣṭaliṅga, jangama teacher-office, Sharana poet-saints); Shakta goddess devotion (Chamundeshwari, Mysore); coastal Tulu Nadu Bhuta/Daiva spirit-veneration (Bhuta Kola ritual); village deity (grāma devate) and navagraha astrological-fatalism folk practice.
Chapter 1 (Colossians 1:1-29) — Including the Core Passage 1:15-20
Chapter 1 carries the highest concentration of Critical-risk doctrine in the book: the greeting and thanksgiving (1:1-14) establish the baseline doctrines of gospel, grace, faith, sainthood, redemption, and inheritance in a Colossian-specific register; the Christ-hymn (1:15-20) is the curriculum’s theological anchor, asserting Christ’s supremacy over creation, deity, and reconciling work in a single dense unit; 1:21-29 applies this to the readers’ reconciliation, ongoing faithfulness, and Paul’s own gospel ministry, introducing the mystery-now-revealed doctrine that recurs through the letter.
| Doctrine | Kannada Name | Risk | Supporting Passages (Colossians) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gospel | ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ | High | 1:5-6, 1:23, 1:28 | Must be distinguished from Karnataka’s own devotional “good teachings” (Haridasa kirtane tradition, Veerashaiva vachana literature) as one specific historical announcement of salvation through the crucified and risen Christ, not a parallel wisdom tradition; here explicitly identified with “the mystery… now revealed” (1:26-27), heightening the stakes of consistent rendering. | Human theologian |
| Grace | ಕೃಪೆ | High | 1:2, 1:6 | Opening/closing epistolary grace; must read as unmerited favor, not a blessing exchanged for devotional merit (bhakti) or kayaka-dasoha sacred labor. | Human theologian |
| Faith | ನಂಬಿಕೆ | High | 1:4, 1:23 | Personal trust in Christ Jesus specifically (1:4); distinct from bhakti’s devotional surrender to a chosen personal deity. | Human theologian |
| Sainthood (All Believers Called Holy) | ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರಾಗಿ ಕರೆ | High | 1:2, 1:4, 1:12, 1:22 | ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರು is a corporate status by God’s declaration; NEVER ಶರಣರು (the Veerashaiva Sharana poet-saint elite who attained Aikya). | Human theologian |
| Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins | ವಿಮೋಚನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾಪಕ್ಷಮೆ | High | 1:13-14 | ವಿಮೋಚನೆ shares a “release” root with the forbidden ಮೋಕ್ಷ; must always be anchored “from sin”/“through his blood,” never a generalized liberation from rebirth’s cycle. | Human theologian |
| Inheritance and Adoption into God’s Family | ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ | High | 1:12 | ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ must retain full, permanent son-and-heir status (extends baseline’s ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ), not a partial or conditional share. | Human theologian |
| Transfer into the Kingdom of the Son | ಪ್ರಿಯ ಮಗನ ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ವರ್ಗಾವಣೆ | Medium | 1:13 | Domain-of-darkness / kingdom-of-the-Son transfer must be a moral-spiritual change of allegiance under a personal, victorious Lord, not a metaphysical dualism of two co-equal cosmic forces (folk light/dark dualism, Samkhya guna theory). | Native speaker review |
| Sonship of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ | Critical | 1:13, 1:15 | ”Son of his love” idiom must retain full eternal Sonship (baseline ದೇವರ ಮಗ), not an honorific “dear son” bestowed on an especially devoted or enlightened human figure — the nearest Karnataka category being a Sharana who attained Aikya. | Human theologian |
| The Supremacy of Christ over Creation | ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಸರ್ವೋಚ್ಚತೆ | Critical | 1:15-17, 1:18b | ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ (“firstborn”) risks a literal birth-order reading aligning Christ with emanated/born deities of Puranic genealogy or a Sharana who attained supreme rank rather than an eternally uncreated Son. ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ (“creation”) is the same word for Brahma’s cyclical sṛṣṭi-sthiti-laya cosmos; context must establish single, linear, purposive creation. συνέστηκεν (“hold together”) risks a pantheistic “cosmic glue” reading (Brahman-as-substratum) unless anchored to Christ’s personal sustaining agency. | Human theologian |
| Deity of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇವತ್ವ | Critical | 1:15, 1:19 | ಪ್ರತಿರೂಪ (“image”) must not read as a temporary avataric appearance-form; the fullness clause (1:19) anticipates 2:9’s ದೇವತ್ವ doctrine (see Chapter 2). | Human theologian |
| Christ as Head of the Church | ಸಭೆಗೆ ತಲೆಯಾಗಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ | Critical | 1:18, 1:24 | ತಲೆ (“head”) risks flattening to a titular/succeeded office familiar from living human gurus or maṭha heads; Christ is the SAME living, resurrected, exclusive Head across all time, never replaced. | Human theologian |
| Resurrection of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ | Critical | 1:18 (“firstborn from the dead”) | ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ, NEVER ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ; a one-time bodily event ending death, not a further turn of a cycle. | Human theologian |
| Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ದೈಹಿಕವಾಗಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ದೇವತ್ವದ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ | Critical | 1:19 | ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ risks convergence with the Isha Upanishad’s pūrṇam (Brahman as fullness from which all emanates); must be anchored as a unique, historically located indwelling “in Christ,” not a diffuse cosmic plenum. First occurrence of the book’s single highest-risk term; recurs 2:9. | Human theologian |
| Reconciliation through the Cross | ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಂಧಾನ | Critical | 1:20-22 | ಸಂಧಾನ is common secular vocabulary for a negotiated settlement between equals, wrongly suggesting mutual concession; also risks an Advaitic non-dual “resolution of apparent difference” reading rather than a real historical atoning transaction. Mandatory anchor to “through the blood of his cross.” | Human theologian |
| Peace with God through the Cross | ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ದೇವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಶಾಂತಿ | Medium | 1:20 | Cosmic peace (“things on earth or in heaven”) must not be flattened into inner tranquility (ಮನಶ್ಶಾಂತಿ) sought through bhakti devotion or Lingayat meditative discipline. | Native speaker review |
| Incarnation and Humanity of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನವತ್ವ | Critical | 1:20, 1:22 (“body of his flesh”) | Reinforces baseline’s Critical ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ (NEVER ಅವತಾರ); guards against docetic/visionary readings, salient for Haridasa-background and Lingayat-background readers alike. | Human theologian |
| Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ | High | 1:9-10 | ಜ್ಞಾನ shares vocabulary with Hindu jñāna-mārga (the path of knowledge to mokṣa); ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ chosen to reduce (not eliminate) resonance with Vedantic ātma-jñāna and Lingayat ಅರಿವು; must be anchored “of Christ”/“of God’s will.” | Human theologian |
| The Mystery of Christ Now Revealed | ಈಗ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾದ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ರಹಸ್ಯ | Critical | 1:26-27 | ರಹಸ್ಯ is the precise word for esoteric guhya-rahasya teaching reserved for initiates; Paul’s mystērion moves oppositely — once hidden, now PUBLICLY revealed. Mandatory “now revealed” note at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| Prayer and Intercession | ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ | Medium | 1:9 | Direct access to God through Christ in prayer, distinguished from bhakti puja/kirtane and from iṣṭaliṅga meditative discipline. | Native speaker review |
| Thanksgiving | ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ | Low | 1:3, 1:12 | Standard term; minor risk of over-ritualization only. | Automated review |
Chapter 1 coverage confirmation: Every verse-block of 1:1-29 has been reviewed. No doctrine-bearing material in this chapter is unaddressed.
Chapter 2 (Colossians 2:1-23)
Chapter 2 is the polemical core of the letter: it grounds the mystery/wisdom doctrine of Chapter 1 in an explicit warning against a syncretistic false teaching (2:4, 2:8, 2:16-23), states the Fullness-of-Deity-Bodily doctrine in its sharpest form (2:9), and develops Union with Christ through baptism, circumcision, and co-resurrection imagery (2:11-14) before climaxing in Christ’s triumph over hostile spiritual powers (2:15) and a sustained critique of ascetic and angel-venerating practices (2:16-23).
| Doctrine | Kannada Name | Risk | Supporting Passages (Colossians) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ | High | 2:2-3 (“hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge”) | All true wisdom/knowledge anchored exclusively “in Christ” (2:3), never a self-attained gnosis or mystical insight bypassing him. | Human theologian |
| The Mystery of Christ Now Revealed | ಈಗ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾದ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ರಹಸ್ಯ | Critical | 2:2 | Same risk as 1:26-27; “God’s mystery, which is Christ” must not be read as restricted, initiate-only knowledge. | Human theologian |
| Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ದೈಹಿಕವಾಗಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ದೇವತ್ವದ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ | Critical | 2:9 | The book’s sharpest statement: “in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.” ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ + ದೇವತ್ವ + ದೈಹಿಕವಾಗಿ must together exclude any reading of a shared/partial divine nature (contra Aikya merger or multi-deva devatva) and exclude docetic/visionary indwelling. Single highest-priority verse in the book for theologian review. | Human theologian |
| Deity of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇವತ್ವ | Critical | 2:9 | ದೇವತ್ವ must not be read as one deity’s portion of “godhood” among many devas, nor the Lingayat Aikya state’s shared divine nature; asserts the ENTIRE, undivided nature of the ONE God. | Human theologian |
| Incarnation and Humanity of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನವತ್ವ | Critical | 2:9, 2:11 | ”Bodily” (σωματικῶς) and “circumcision of Christ” (2:11, bodily-metaphor register) both guard the real, historical human nature of Christ and the believer’s real participation in it. | Human theologian |
| Christ’s Supremacy over Spiritual Powers | ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಸರ್ವೋಚ್ಚತೆ | Critical | 2:8, 2:15, 2:18, 2:20 | Direct collision with Karnataka’s populated cosmos of intermediary beings: grāma devate village guardians, navagraha astrological powers, coastal Bhuta/Daiva spirits (Bhuta Kola ritual). All must be taught as Christ’s created, already-defeated subordinates (2:15), never independent objects of reverence or ritual placation. | Human theologian |
| Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | ಸುಳ್ಳು ಬೋಧನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಿಶ್ರಣಧರ್ಮದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ | Critical | 2:4, 2:8, 2:16-23 | ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ (“human tradition”) is the exact word for Karnataka’s honored devotional/philosophical lineages (Haridasa sampradaya, Veerashaiva sampradaya); ತತ್ವಜ್ಞಾನ (“philosophy”) the exact word for Vedanta/Samkhya/Veerashaiva reasoned reflection. Text must be taught as targeting the specific Colossian syncretistic error, not condemning heritage or reasoned thought as such. | Human theologian |
| Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಐಕ್ಯತೆ | Critical | 2:11-13, 2:20 | The doctrine’s Kannada label ಐಕ್ಯತೆ itself risks confusion with ಐಕ್ಯ (Aikya), the Lingayat term for final merger/dissolution of identity into Shiva; must be immediately qualified in all teaching material as retained personal union in relationship, never identity-dissolution. ದೀಕ್ಷಾಸ್ನಾನ (baptism, 2:12) must be distinguished from ದೀಕ್ಷೆ, the Hindu/Lingayat guru-mediated initiation (including iṣṭaliṅga rite). | Human theologian |
| Resurrection of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ | Critical | 2:12-13 (“made alive together with him”) | The believer’s real co-resurrection with Christ’s own bodily resurrection life; must not be assimilated to rebirth within an ongoing cycle. | Human theologian |
| Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins | ವಿಮೋಚನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾಪಕ್ಷಮೆ | High | 2:13-14 (“record of debt… canceled”) | The cancelled “record of debt” can be positively contrasted with the popular Hindu conception of an incrementally-worked-off karmic ledger, provided the contrast is made explicit, not assumed. | Human theologian |
| Peace with God through the Cross | ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ದೇವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಶಾಂತಿ | Medium | (background to 2:14’s peace-securing cancellation) | Same risk profile as 1:20; objective, cosmic, once-for-all accomplishment, not achieved inner tranquility. | Native speaker review |
Chapter 2 coverage confirmation: Every verse-block of 2:1-23 has been reviewed, including the dense polemical unit 2:16-23 (food/festival/Sabbath regulations, angel-worship, ascetic self-made religion, shadow/substance imagery), which is fully captured under Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism and Christ’s Supremacy over Spiritual Powers above; no separate doctrine entry is required for 2:16-17’s shadow/substance wordplay or 2:23’s self-made religion beyond what these two doctrines already cover, but translators must note (per the core glossary, Section B.4) that σῶμα in 2:17 means “reality,” a different sense than “body” elsewhere in the letter, and must never be rendered ದೇಹ there.
Chapter 3 (Colossians 3:1-25)
Chapter 3 pivots from doctrine to its ethical outworking: the believer’s co-resurrection with Christ (3:1-4) grounds the putting off of the old self and putting on of the new (3:5-17), which in turn grounds the household codes (3:18-25). This chapter also contains the letter’s most direct unity-in-Christ statement (3:11) and its clearest election/calling language (3:12, 3:15).
| Doctrine | Kannada Name | Risk | Supporting Passages (Colossians) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಐಕ್ಯತೆ | Critical | 3:1-4 | ”You have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (3:3) and “raised with Christ” (3:1) assert an already-accomplished status grounded in Christ’s own bodily resurrection; not a future cyclical rebirth nor a stage toward mystical merger. New life is secured as a distinct person in relationship within God, never dissolved into an impersonal divine ground. | Human theologian |
| Resurrection of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ | Critical | 3:1 | ”Raised with Christ” ties directly to the Critical baseline ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ term; consistency with 1:18 and 2:12-13 renderings is mandatory. | Human theologian |
| Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | ಹಳೆಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕಿ ಹೊಸ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು | High | 3:5-10 | The new self is “renewed after the image (εἰκών) of its Creator” (3:10), directly echoing 1:15’s Christological claim; must be taught as a Spirit-given, already-accomplished reality flowing from union with Christ (paired with 3:3), not an ongoing self-effort project resembling the Lingayat shatsthala path’s stage-by-stage ascent toward Aikya. | Human theologian |
| Sanctification | ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ | High | 3:10, 3:12 | τέλειος/τελειότης risk assimilation to the shatsthala path’s self-attained perfection culminating in Aikya; must be anchored as Spirit-given standing “in Christ,” kept terminologically distinct from ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ (fullness of deity). | Human theologian |
| Election and Effectual Calling | ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿ ಕರೆ | High | 3:12, 3:15 | ”God’s chosen ones” and “called in one body” must never be rendered with ಹಣೆಬರಹ (fatalism idiom) or an impersonal law of karma; God’s sovereign, personal choice and summons. | Human theologian |
| Unity of All Peoples in Christ (No Distinction) | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಜನಾಂಗಗಳ ಏಕತೆ | High | 3:11 | Parallels the baseline’s Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine, extended to slave/free; genuine partial convergence with the Lingayat reform movement’s historic anti-caste stance can be taught as common ground before sharpening to the exclusive Christological center (“Christ is all, and in all”) the reform movement does not itself claim. | Human theologian |
| Grace | ಕೃಪೆ | High | 3:13 | ”Forgiving… as the Lord has forgiven you” shares the χάρις root (χαρίζομαι); forgiveness modeled on unearned favor, against both karma-merit economy and kayaka-dasoha ethic. | Human theologian |
| Peace with God through the Cross | ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ದೇವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಶಾಂತಿ | Medium | 3:15 | ”Peace of Christ” ruling hearts extends the cosmic peace of 1:20 into daily congregational life; not achieved inner tranquility. | Native speaker review |
| Christian Fellowship and Mutual Edification | ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಭಕ್ತಿವೃದ್ಧಿ | Low | 3:16 | ”Teaching and admonishing one another” with psalms, hymns, spiritual songs; ಕೀರ್ತನೆ is shared vocabulary with the Haridasa kirtane genre and must be anchored to praise of the Lord Jesus specifically (3:17). | Automated review |
| Thanksgiving | ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ | Low | 3:15, 3:17 | Standard term; recurs densely in this chapter. | Automated review |
| Lordship of Christ | ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವ | Critical | 3:17, 3:23-24 | ”Whatever you do… in the name of the Lord Jesus” and “serving the Lord Christ” require ಕರ್ತ to remain a living, exclusive, presently-reigning sovereign — never softened toward ಸ್ವಾಮಿ’s guru/jangama connotation, nor toward Aikya-style merger of devotee and lord. | Human theologian |
| Household Codes | ಮನೆವಾರ್ತೆಯ ನೀತಿನಿಯಮಗಳು | High | 3:18-4:1 (household portion in ch. 3: 3:18-25) | ಅಧೀನರಾಗಿರಿ (“submit”) must be taught together with its paired reciprocal commands so the Christ-centered framing (“as is fitting in the Lord,” 3:18) is not collapsed into an unqualified permanent hierarchy. ದಾಸ (“bondservant,” 3:22) is also the Haridasa bhakti tradition’s own honored devotional self-designation; genuine point of contact via 3:24’s universalizing “you are serving the Lord Christ,” but the passage’s address to actual institutional bondage must not be spiritualized away. | Human theologian |
| Inheritance and Adoption into God’s Family | ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ | High | 3:24 | ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ as a servant’s “reward” for labor must retain graciously granted, permanent son-and-heir status, not wages earned through a strict merit-transaction — though reward-language invites that misreading if not carefully taught. | Human theologian |
Chapter 3 coverage confirmation: Every verse-block of 3:1-25 has been reviewed, including the vice list (3:5, 3:8-9) and virtue list (3:12) noted in the core glossary Section B.9 as Medium-risk supporting vocabulary; these are covered under Putting Off the Old Self / Putting On the New above and require no separate doctrine entry, but translators must preserve the “covetousness… is idolatry” equation (3:5) and note that humility (ದೀನಮನಸ್ಸು, 3:12) must flow from secure gift-identity, not caste-conditioned self-abasement.
Chapter 4 (Colossians 4:1-18)
Chapter 4 is lowest in new doctrinal density but not doctrinally empty: it closes the household code (4:1), returns to prayer and the mystery-now-revealed doctrine in a mission key (4:2-3), gives instruction for outsider-facing conduct (4:5-6), and closes with personal greetings that reprise the letter’s opening grace and thanksgiving doctrines (4:7-18).
| Doctrine | Kannada Name | Risk | Supporting Passages (Colossians) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Household Codes | ಮನೆವಾರ್ತೆಯ ನೀತಿನಿಯಮಗಳು | High | 4:1 | ”Masters, treat your bondservants justly… you also have a Master in heaven” — the appeal to a heavenly Master subverts any reading of the code as endorsing an unaccountable, permanent hierarchy. | Human theologian |
| Prayer and Intercession | ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ | Medium | 4:2-3, 4:12 | ”Continue steadfastly in prayer”; Epaphras “always struggling on your behalf in his prayers” — direct access to God through Christ, distinguished from bhakti puja/kirtane and iṣṭaliṅga meditative discipline. | Native speaker review |
| The Mystery of Christ Now Revealed | ಈಗ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾದ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ರಹಸ್ಯ | Critical | 4:3 | ”That God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ” — reinforces that the mystery is to be proclaimed openly, not restricted; mandatory “now revealed” note applies here as at 1:26-27 and 2:2. | Human theologian |
| Mission and Evangelism to Outsiders | ಹೊರಗಿನವರಿಗೆ ಸುವಾರ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಸಾರ | Medium | 4:3-6 | ”Walk in wisdom toward outsiders… speech seasoned with salt” — non-confrontational, witness-oriented framing given Karnataka’s religious plurality and communities’ pride in their own reform/devotional traditions; ಸುವಾರ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಸಾರ preferred over ಮಿಷನ್. | Native speaker review |
| Sanctification | ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ | High | 4:12 (“mature and fully assured”) | τέλειος recurs here in Epaphras’s prayer-report; same risk and anchoring as 1:28 and 3:10/3:14. | Human theologian |
| Christian Fellowship and Mutual Edification | ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಭಕ್ತಿವೃದ್ಧಿ | Low | 4:7-17 | ”Fellow servant,” “fellow prisoner,” “church in the house of…” — shared participation in Christ within a home congregation, not a temple-building institution (ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ/ಗುಡಿ forbidden for ಸಭೆ) nor mere caste-community association. | Automated review |
| Grace | ಕೃಪೆ | High | 4:18 | Closing benediction, “Grace be with you,” reprising 1:2; consistency of ಕೃಪೆ across the whole letter’s frame is required. | Human theologian |
Chapter 4 coverage confirmation: Every verse-block of 4:1-18 has been reviewed. The closing greetings (4:7-17) name individuals and churches (Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus, Laodicea) and contain no additional load-bearing theological vocabulary beyond what is captured above; this chapter is explicitly noted, not silently omitted, as contributing lower doctrinal density than Chapters 1-3.

As the curriculum’s theological anchor, 1:15-20 alone carries supporting passages for 7 of the 13 Critical-risk doctrines in this matrix: The Supremacy of Christ over Creation, Deity of Christ, Sonship of Christ, Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily, Incarnation and Humanity of Christ, Resurrection of Christ, Christ as Head of the Church, and Reconciliation through the Cross (the last spanning 1:20-22). This concentration confirms the passage’s anchor status but does not reduce the scope of this analysis: Chapters 2 through 4 introduce 6 additional Critical-risk doctrines (Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism, Christ’s Supremacy over Spiritual Powers, The Mystery of Christ Now Revealed, Union with Christ) and all 12 High-risk doctrines not already anchored in Chapter 1, none of which may be silently omitted from Phase 2 translation planning.
Full-Book Coverage Statement
Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 of Colossians have each been individually reviewed above for doctrine-bearing content, with explicit chapter-level coverage confirmations. No chapter is silently omitted. Chapter 4, while lowest in new doctrinal density, is documented as reviewed and contributing to Household Codes, Prayer and Intercession, Mystery, Mission and Evangelism, Sanctification, Christian Fellowship, and Grace. This matrix is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: identical doctrine set (25 doctrines), identical risk tiers, identical review routing, with no additions, omissions, or reclassifications.
Next step: Phase 1 Step 5 (translation memory extension) will promote the Section B “NEW” terms from analysis/08_core_glossary.md into a versioned Colossians-extended translation_memory.json, keyed to the doctrine assignments in this document.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Kannada name: ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಸರ್ವೋಚ್ಚತೆ
Key terms: image, firstborn, creation, before all things, hold together, thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities
Review routing: Human theologian
ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ (firstborn) risks a literal birth-order reading that could align Christ with a hierarchy of emanated or born deities familiar from Puranic genealogies, or with a Sharana figure who attained supreme spiritual rank (Aikya) rather than being eternally uncreated. ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ (creation) is the same word for Brahma’s cyclical sṛṣṭi-sthiti-laya cosmos; context must establish a single, linear, purposive creation by a personal Creator distinct from it. συνέστηκεν (‘hold together’) risks a pantheistic ‘cosmic glue’ reading echoing Brahman-as-substratum unless anchored to Christ’s personal agency.
Deity of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇವತ್ವ
Key terms: image, fullness, deity/Godhead, bodily
Review routing: Human theologian
ದೇವತ್ವ (theotēs) risks being read through Hindu religious multiplicity (many devas possessing ‘devatva’ in degree) or through the Lingayat Aikya state, in which a devotee’s identity is said to merge with and share Shiva’s nature. Paul asserts the ENTIRE, undivided nature of the ONE God dwelling uniquely and bodily in Christ, not a portion or attainable divine quality available to other beings; must always pair ದೇವತ್ವ with ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ/ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ.
Sonship of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ
Key terms: son of God, his beloved Son, image of the invisible God
Review routing: Human theologian
The idiom ‘Son of his love’ (ಆತನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಮಗ) must retain full, eternal Sonship established in the baseline ದೇವರ ಮಗ, not merely an honorific ‘dear son’ bestowed on an especially devoted or enlightened human figure — the closest available Karnataka category being a Sharana who attained Aikya.
Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ದೈಹಿಕವಾಗಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ದೇವತ್ವದ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ
Key terms: fullness, deity/Godhead, bodily, dwell permanently
Review routing: Human theologian
The single most theologically load-bearing new doctrine in Colossians. ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ (plērōma) risks direct convergence with the Isha Upanishad’s pūrṇam — Brahman as ‘that fullness’ from which all finite things emanate and to which they return, a concept deeply present in Kannada Vedantic and bhakti religious literacy. Paul’s claim is a unique, once-for-all, historically located, BODILY (ದೈಹಿಕವಾಗಿ) indwelling in the single person of Jesus Christ, not a diffuse cosmic plenum in which many beings or all reality participate by degree. Mandatory translator note anchoring to ‘in Christ’ at every occurrence.
Incarnation and Humanity of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನವತ್ವ
Key terms: bodily, body of his flesh, his blood, his cross
Review routing: Human theologian
Reinforces the baseline’s Critical ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ doctrine: NEVER ಅವತಾರ. ‘Bodily’ (σωματικῶς, 2:9) and ‘body of his flesh’ (1:22) guard against docetic or purely visionary readings; specifically salient for readers formed by coastal Karnataka’s Haridasa Krishna-bhakti tradition, and for Lingayat-background readers who may instead receive Christ as an exceptionally realized human Sharana figure who attained Aikya rather than the eternal Son who took on real flesh once.
Resurrection of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ
Key terms: firstborn from the dead, raised with Christ, made alive together
Review routing: Human theologian
ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ, NEVER ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. Christ’s bodily, historical, once-for-all resurrection (1:18) and the believer’s real co-resurrection with him (2:12-13, 3:1) must not be assimilated to rebirth within an ongoing cycle, nor read as a stage toward eventual dissolution of identity as in Aikya-merger.
Lordship of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವ
Key terms: Lord Jesus Christ, serving the Lord Christ, in the name of the Lord Jesus
Review routing: Human theologian
ಕರ್ತ must convey a living, exclusive, presently-reigning sovereign, distinct from the believer in ongoing relationship — never softened toward ಸ್ವಾಮಿ’s guru/jangama connotation of one honored teacher among several, nor toward the Aikya picture of a devotee eventually merging into and losing distinction from the Lord.
Christ as Head of the Church
Kannada name: ಸಭೆಗೆ ತಲೆಯಾಗಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ
Key terms: head, body, church
Review routing: Human theologian
ತಲೆ (kephalē) risks being flattened to a merely honorary ‘figurehead’ or one leader in a succession of living human gurus/maṭha heads, a role Karnataka readers know well. Colossians’ κεφαλή is categorically different: Christ is the SAME living, resurrected, exclusive Head across all time, never replaced or succeeded, and organically constitutive of the body’s very life and growth (2:19). Mandatory translator note at every occurrence.
Reconciliation through the Cross
Kannada name: ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಂಧಾನ
Key terms: reconcile, make peace, blood, cross, alienated
Review routing: Human theologian
ಸಂಧಾನ (apokatallassō) is common secular Kannada vocabulary for a negotiated political or business settlement between roughly equal parties, wrongly suggesting mutual concession rather than God’s unilateral, gracious initiative. A subtler risk is assimilation to Advaitic non-dual resolutions of apparent difference (the finite and infinite reconciled by realizing an underlying identity) rather than a real, historical atoning transaction leaving God and creation distinct, personal parties in restored relationship. Mandatory translator note anchoring to ‘through the blood of his cross’ at every occurrence.
Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Kannada name: ಸುಳ್ಳು ಬೋಧನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಿಶ್ರಣಧರ್ಮದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ
Key terms: philosophy, human tradition, elemental spirits, worship of angels, self-made religion, plausible arguments
Review routing: Human theologian
ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ (‘human tradition’) is the exact word for Karnataka’s honored devotional/philosophical lineages (Haridasa sampradaya, Veerashaiva sampradaya) and ತತ್ವಜ್ಞಾನ (‘philosophy’) the exact word for Vedanta/Samkhya/Veerashaiva reasoned reflection; the text must be taught as targeting the specific syncretistic blend troubling Colossae, not condemning heritage or reasoned thought as such.
Christ’s Supremacy over Spiritual Powers
Kannada name: ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಸರ್ವೋಚ್ಚತೆ
Key terms: thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities, elemental spirits, worship of angels, disarmed/triumphing
Review routing: Human theologian
Direct collision with Karnataka’s populated cosmos of intermediary spiritual beings: village guardian deities (grāma devate), navagraha astrological powers believed to govern fate, and coastal Tulu Nadu Bhuta/Daiva spirits (Bhuta Kola ritual). All such powers, however locally named, must be taught as Christ’s created subordinates, already stripped of authority at the cross (2:15) — never independent objects of reverence, ritual placation, or ongoing binding.
The Mystery of Christ Now Revealed
Kannada name: ಈಗ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾದ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ರಹಸ್ಯ
Key terms: mystery, now revealed, Christ in you
Review routing: Human theologian
ರಹಸ್ಯ is the precise word for esoteric teaching in Vedantic/Tantric tradition (guhya-rahasya reserved for qualified initiates) and for a guru’s secret transmission in bhakti lineages. Paul’s mystērion moves in the OPPOSITE direction: once hidden, now PUBLICLY REVEALED and proclaimed to all — not an esoteric truth restricted to an initiated few. Mandatory ‘now revealed’ translator note at every occurrence.
Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಐಕ್ಯತೆ (ಆತನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸತ್ತು ಎದ್ದದ್ದು)
Key terms: baptism, raised with Christ, died/hidden with Christ, circumcision of Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
This doctrine’s very name risks confusion in Kannada with ಐಕ್ಯ (Aikya), the Lingayat term for the devotee’s final merger and dissolution of individual identity into Shiva; the Kannada doctrine label ಐಕ್ಯತೆ must be immediately qualified in all teaching material as retained personal union in relationship, not identity-dissolution. ದೀಕ್ಷಾಸ್ನಾನ (baptism, 2:12) must be distinguished from ದೀಕ್ಷೆ, the Hindu/Lingayat guru-mediated initiation (including the iṣṭaliṅga rite): Christian baptism signifies union with Christ’s own finished death/resurrection, not empowerment mediated by a human guru.
High Risk Doctrines
Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Kannada name: ವಿಮೋಚನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾಪಕ್ಷಮೆ
Key terms: redemption, forgiveness, deliver/rescue, record of debt
Review routing: Human theologian
ವಿಮೋಚನೆ (apolytrōsis, ‘redemption’) shares a root sense of ‘release’ with the forbidden ಮೋಕ್ಷ; must always be anchored ‘from sin’ / ‘through his blood’ to keep the referent a specific, Christ-purchased release, never a generalized liberation from the cycle of rebirth. The cancelled ‘record of debt’ (2:14) can be positively contrasted with the popular Hindu conception of an incrementally-worked-off karmic ledger, provided the contrast is made explicit rather than assumed.
Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Kannada name:
Key terms: old self, new self, renewed, image of its creator
Review routing: Human theologian
The new self is ‘renewed after the image (εἰκών) of its Creator’ (3:10), directly echoing 1:15’s Christological claim; this ethical transformation must be taught as a Spirit-given, already-accomplished reality flowing from union with Christ (paired with 3:3’s ‘you have died’), not an ongoing self-effort project resembling the Lingayat shatsthala path’s stage-by-stage ascent toward Aikya.
Sanctification
Kannada name: ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ
Key terms: holy, renewed, perfect/mature
Review routing: Human theologian
BASELINE REUSE doctrine, extended here through τέλειος/τελειότης (‘perfect/mature,’ 1:28, 3:14, 4:12), which risks assimilation to the Lingayat shatsthala path’s self-attained perfection culminating in Aikya. Must be anchored as a Spirit-given standing ‘in Christ,’ distinct from ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣತೆ (fullness of deity).
Household Codes
Kannada name: ಮನೆವಾರ್ತೆಯ ನೀತಿನಿಯಮಗಳು
Key terms: submit/be subject, husbands love wives, children obey, bondservants, masters, working for the Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
ಅಧೀನರಾಗಿರಿ (‘submit’) must be taught together with its paired reciprocal commands so the Christ-centered framing (‘as is fitting in the Lord,’ 3:18) is not collapsed into an unqualified permanent social hierarchy. ದಾಸ (‘bondservant,’ 3:22) is also the Haridasa bhakti tradition’s own honored devotional self-designation (‘servant of the Lord’); this is a genuine point of contact via 3:24’s universalizing ‘you are serving the Lord Christ,’ but the passage’s specific address to actual institutional bondage must not be spiritualized away. 4:1’s appeal to a heavenly Master subverts any reading of the code as endorsing an unaccountable hierarchy.
Unity of All Peoples in Christ (No Distinction)
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಜನಾಂಗಗಳ ಏಕತೆ
Key terms: Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, slave and free, Christ is all, and in all
Review routing: Human theologian
Directly parallels the baseline’s High-risk Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine, extended here to the socially fraught slave/free distinction. Real, partial convergence exists with the Lingayat reform movement’s own historic rejection of caste hierarchy 900 years ago — this can be taught as genuine common ground before sharpening to the exclusive, unique Christological center (‘Christ is all, and in all’) that the reform movement does not itself claim.
Gospel
Kannada name: ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ
Key terms: gospel, word of truth, bearing fruit
Review routing: Human theologian
BASELINE REUSE doctrine. In Colossians the gospel is explicitly identified with ‘the mystery… now revealed’ (1:26-27); must be distinguished from Karnataka’s own devotional traditions’ ‘good teaching’ as one specific historical announcement of salvation through the crucified and risen Christ, not a parallel wisdom tradition.
Grace
Kannada name: ಕೃಪೆ
Key terms: grace, forgiving (charizomenoi)
Review routing: Human theologian
BASELINE REUSE doctrine. 3:13’s command to forgive ‘as the Lord has forgiven you’ shares the χάρις root (χαρίζομαι); must be taught as forgiveness modeled on unearned favor, standing against both the karma-merit economy of popular Hindu devotion and the Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic of favor answered by disciplined service.
Faith
Kannada name: ನಂಬಿಕೆ
Key terms: faith, firmness of faith
Review routing: Human theologian
BASELINE REUSE doctrine. Personal trust in Christ specifically, distinct from the devotional surrender (ಭಕ್ತಿ) a Haridasa devotee directs toward Krishna or a Lingayat devotee toward Shiva through the personal iṣṭaliṅga.
Sainthood (All Believers Called Holy)
Kannada name: ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರಾಗಿ ಕರೆ
Key terms: saints, holy and blameless, God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved
Review routing: Human theologian
BASELINE REUSE doctrine. All believers are ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರು, a corporate status by God’s declaration; NEVER ಶರಣರು, which names the specific Veerashaiva Sharana poet-saints who attained the elite, highest Aikya stage.
Election and Effectual Calling
Kannada name: ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿ ಕರೆ
Key terms: chosen ones, called (in one body)
Review routing: Human theologian
BASELINE REUSE doctrine pattern. God’s sovereign, personal choice and summons uniting believers into one body; must never be rendered with ಹಣೆಬರಹ (the vivid Kannada fatalism idiom, ‘forehead-writing’) or an impersonal law of karma.
Inheritance and Adoption into God’s Family
Kannada name: ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ
Key terms: inheritance, inheritance as reward
Review routing: Human theologian
Extends the baseline’s Adoption doctrine (ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ). ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ (‘inheritance’) must retain full, permanent son-and-heir status even when framed as a servant’s ‘reward’ (3:24) for labor — a graciously granted status, not wages earned through a strict merit-transaction, though the language of reward invites that misreading if not carefully taught.
Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ
Key terms: wisdom, knowledge/full knowledge, hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge
Review routing: Human theologian
ಜ್ಞಾನ (sophia) shares vocabulary with Hindu jñāna-mārga (the path of knowledge to mokṣa); ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ (gnōsis/epignōsis) is chosen to reduce, though not eliminate, resonance with Vedantic ātma-jñāna and the Lingayat vachana concept of ಅರಿವು (awakened spiritual awareness on the shatsthala path). All true wisdom/knowledge must be anchored exclusively ‘in Christ’ (2:3), never a self-attained gnosis or mystical insight bypassing him.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Transfer into the Kingdom of the Son
Kannada name: ಪ್ರಿಯ ಮಗನ ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ವರ್ಗಾವಣೆ
Key terms: domain of darkness, kingdom of his beloved Son, delivered/rescued
Review routing: Native speaker review
BASELINE REUSE pattern (ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ). The believer’s transfer from ‘the domain of darkness’ into Christ’s kingdom must be taught as a moral-spiritual change of allegiance under a personal, victorious Lord, not a metaphysical dualism of two co-equal cosmic forces such as popular light/darkness folk dualism or Samkhya guna theory might suggest.
Peace with God through the Cross
Kannada name: ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ದೇವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಶಾಂತಿ
Key terms: peace, making peace by the blood of his cross, peace of Christ rule
Review routing: Native speaker review
BASELINE REUSE pattern (ಶಾಂತಿ), extended cosmically (‘all things, whether on earth or in heaven’). Must not be flattened into the inner tranquility (ಮನಶ್ಶಾಂತಿ) sought through bhakti devotion or Lingayat meditative discipline; this is an objective, cosmic peace secured once for all at the cross.
Prayer and Intercession
Kannada name: ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ
Key terms: continue steadfastly in prayer, open door for the word
Review routing: Native speaker review
BASELINE REUSE doctrine. Direct access to God through Christ in prayer, distinguished from bhakti puja/kirtane directed toward a chosen personal deity and from the meditative discipline of engaging the iṣṭaliṅga.
Mission and Evangelism to Outsiders
Kannada name: ಹೊರಗಿನವರಿಗೆ ಸುವಾರ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಸಾರ
Key terms: walk in wisdom toward outsiders, speech seasoned with salt, declare the mystery of Christ
Review routing: Native speaker review
BASELINE REUSE doctrine (ಸುವಾರ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಸಾರ preferred over ಮಿಷನ್ given colonial-era connotations). Use non-confrontational, witness-oriented framing given Karnataka’s religious plurality and communities’ pride in their own reform and devotional traditions, per the baseline’s Evangelism note.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving
Kannada name: ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ
Key terms: give thanks, thanksgiving, grateful
Review routing: Automated review
BASELINE REUSE doctrine; standard term throughout Colossians (notably recurring more densely than in Romans). Minor risk of over-ritualization only.
Christian Fellowship and Mutual Edification
Kannada name: ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಭಕ್ತಿವೃದ್ಧಿ
Key terms: teaching and admonishing one another, fellow servant, church in the house
Review routing: Automated review
BASELINE REUSE doctrine. Shared participation in Christ and mutual up-building within a home congregation, not merely social or caste-community association, and not a temple-building institution (ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ/ಗುಡಿ forbidden for ಸಭೆ).
