Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis: Jude (Koine Greek → Kannada)
How to read this document
Each entry gives: original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, common English variants across translations, the contextual theological meaning in Jude, and the Kannada rendering risk (reusing baseline terms exactly where they recur, and proposing new terms with risk tiers matching the baseline’s Critical/High/Medium/Low framework).
PART A: CORE PASSAGE — Jude 1:3-23 (Verse-by-Verse)
Jude 1:3
Greek: Ἀγαπητοί, πᾶσαν σπουδὴν ποιούμενος γράφειν ὑμῖν περὶ τῆς κοινῆς ἡμῶν σωτηρίας ἀνάγκην ἔσχον γράψαι ὑμῖν παρακαλῶν ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι τῇ ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ τοῖς ἁγίοις πίστει.
English (representative): “Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning in context | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ἀγαπητοί | Agapētoi | ”beloved ones” | term of affection among believers, from ἀγάπη | ”beloved,” “dear friends” | Paul-style pastoral address; frames the letter’s urgency as loving concern, not hostility | NEW. ಪ್ರಿಯರೇ (priyarē). Low risk; standard Kannada Christian epistolary address. |
| κοινῆς…σωτηρίας | koinēs sōtērias | ”common/shared salvation” | σωτηρία = deliverance; κοινός = shared, held in common | ”common salvation,” “salvation we share” | The salvation all true believers share, over against the false teachers’ private, self-serving religion (cf. v.19 ἀποδιορίζοντες) | σωτηρία = REUSE (baseline) ರಕ್ಷಣೆ, Critical. κοινός = ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ/ಸಮಾನ. Note: pairing ರಕ್ಷಣೆ with “common/shared” (ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಸಮಾನವಾದ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ) reinforces the universal-scope doctrine already flagged Critical in the baseline — no caste or spiritual-attainment tier divides believers’ salvation. |
| ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι | epagōnizesthai | ”to contend/struggle earnestly upon [a foundation already laid]“ | rare NT compound of ἀγωνίζομαι (“to struggle/compete,” root of “agonize,” used of athletic contest); ἐπι- intensifies “on behalf of, upon" | "contend for,” “fight earnestly for,” “struggle for” | Defines the entire letter’s purpose and the “Contending for the Faith” doctrine: earnest defense of a fixed deposit of truth against corrupters, not building one’s own spiritual attainment | NEW — CRITICAL. Propose ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಾಗಿ ಹೋರಾಡುವುದು (nambikegāgi hōrāḍuvudu, “to fight/struggle for the faith”). Reject any rendering built on ಸಾಧನೆ (“attainment, spiritual accomplishment”) or ಸಾಧನ (“means/discipline of practice”), which would recast contending-for-a-received-deposit as the self-effort ascent of Lingayat shatsthala discipline or Haridasa sādhana. The struggle in Jude 3 defends what has already been given; it does not build up merit or progress toward it. |
| ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ | hapax paradotheisē | ”having been delivered once for all” | ἅπαξ = one single, unrepeatable time; παραδίδωμι = to hand over, entrust, transmit | ”once for all delivered,” “once entrusted” | Anchors the “faith once delivered” doctrine: revelation is closed and complete, not an evolving oral corpus | NEW — CRITICAL. Propose ಒಮ್ಮೆಗೇ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ (ommegē oppisalpaṭṭa, “handed over once and for all”). This must be flagged as a direct collision point with two Karnataka religious patterns: (1) the guru-paramparā model of successive teachers transmitting and elaborating teaching across generations, and (2) the accumulating vachana corpus of the Lingayat Sharana poet-saints, which grew as a living body of literature over centuries. ಒಮ್ಮೆಗೇ must be preserved to block any reading of the Christian faith as an open, still-growing revelation. |
| τοῖς ἁγίοις | tois hagiois | ”to the holy ones” | ἅγιος = set apart, holy | ”saints,” “holy ones” | The universal body of believers who received the deposit of faith | REUSE (baseline) ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರು, High. Never ಶರಣರು (Sharana poet-saint title). |
| πίστει | pistei | ”faith” (dative) | here objective: the body of belief/doctrine received (fides quae), distinct from Romans’ more frequent subjective sense of personal trust (fides qua) | “the faith,” “the faith system,” “the doctrine” | A defining nuance for Jude: πίστις here names a received deposit of truth to defend, not only an act of trusting. Both senses must remain visible across the letter (subjective trust also appears in v.20, “your most holy faith”) | REUSE (baseline) ನಂಬಿಕೆ, High. Flag for translator note: in v.3 ನಂಬಿಕೆ denotes the content of what is believed (a received body of teaching), a distinct but related sense from its usual subjective “trust” meaning in the TM; both senses must be kept coherent for readers. |
Jude 1:4
Greek: παρεισέδυσαν γάρ τινες ἄνθρωποι, οἱ πάλαι προγεγραμμένοι εἰς τοῦτο τὸ κρίμα, ἀσεβεῖς, τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν χάριτα μετατιθέντες εἰς ἀσέλγειαν καὶ τὸν μόνον δεσπότην καὶ κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἀρνούμενοι.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παρεισέδυσαν | pareisedysan | ”slipped in secretly, stole in alongside” | infiltration imagery, entering unnoticed among genuine believers | ”crept in,” “infiltrated,” “slipped in unnoticed” | Establishes the false teachers as internal infiltrators, not outside opponents — central to “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” | NEW. ಗುಪ್ತವಾಗಿ ನುಗ್ಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ (guptavāgi nuggiddāre, “have secretly forced their way in”). Medium risk; ensure it reads as deceptive infiltration, not mere arrival. |
| πάλαι προγεγραμμένοι | palai progegrammenoi | ”marked out/written about beforehand long ago” | προγράφω = write in advance, here of prophetic foreordination of judgment | ”designated beforehand,” “marked out long ago,” “written about in advance” | Ties the false teachers’ coming judgment to prior prophetic revelation — a fulfillment-of-prophecy theme, but of judgment rather than salvation | NEW. ಮೊದಲೇ ಬರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ (modalē barayalpaṭṭa). Medium risk. |
| κρίμα | krima | ”judgment, verdict, sentence” | a specific judicial verdict/sentence (distinct nuance from κρίσις, the act/process of judging, used in vv.6, 9, 15) | “condemnation,” “judgment,” “sentence” | The false teachers’ doom is not accidental but a foreordained sentence — core to “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” | NEW — HIGH. ನ್ಯಾಯತೀರ್ಪು (nyāyatīrpu). Must be distinguished from ಕರ್ಮಫಲ (karma-phala, “the fruit of karma”), the impersonal cause-effect law of popular Hindu ethics rejected already in the baseline (cf. “grace” entry’s rejected alternative ಕರ್ಮಫಲ). Judgment in Jude is a personal, forensic verdict pronounced by a personal God, not the automatic ripening of an impersonal moral ledger. |
| ἀσεβεῖς | asebeis | ”ungodly ones, impious ones” | ἀσέβεια = fundamental irreverence toward God, a settled orientation against his authority (recurs vv.15 [x2], 18) | “ungodly,” “impious,” “irreligious” | Names the false teachers’ basic character — the doctrinal center of “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” | NEW — HIGH. Propose ಭಕ್ತಿಹೀನ (bhaktihīna, lit. “devotion-lacking”), the established Kannada Bible convention for ἀσεβής. Flag: the ಭಕ್ತಿ root risks being heard as “insufficiently devoted/emotionally fervent” within Karnataka’s strong bhakti culture (Haridasa Krishna devotion, Lingayat Shiva devotion), rather than the biblical sense of a fundamental posture of rebellion against God’s rightful authority. A brief gloss (e.g., pairing with ದೇವರ ಅಧಿಕಾರವನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸುವ, “rejecting God’s authority”) is recommended at first use. |
| χάριτα | charita | ”grace” (accusative) | God’s unmerited favor | ”grace” | Perverted grace: false teachers turn the gift of unmerited favor into a license for sensuality — the grace-as-license distortion | REUSE (baseline) ಕೃಪೆ, High. |
| ἀσέλγειαν | aselgeian | ”sensuality, licentiousness, unrestrained vice” | shameless, unrestrained self-indulgence, often sexual | ”sensuality,” “debauchery,” “licentiousness” | The practical fruit of turning grace into a pretext for sin | NEW. ಸ್ವೇಚ್ಛಾಚಾರ (svēcchācāra, “self-willed/unrestrained conduct”). Medium risk. |
| μόνον δεσπότην | monon despotēn | ”only Master/Sovereign Owner” | δεσπότης = one who has absolute ownership/authority (root of “despot”), distinct word from κύριος though overlapping in reference here | ”only Sovereign,” “only Master,” “only Ruler” | A second, distinct title of absolute lordship alongside κύριος — doubles the emphasis on Christ’s unique, undivided sovereignty | NEW — CRITICAL. Do NOT default to ಸ್ವಾಮಿ, which the baseline explicitly rejects for κύριος because it names the common honorific for a guru or the Lingayat ಜಂಗಮ teacher-office. Since δεσπότης is a distinct Greek word from κύριος, using ಸ್ವಾಮಿ here would be doctrinally worse than in the κύριος case, since it stands paired directly with κύριος/ಕರ್ತ in the same clause — readers could hear “Master (guru-like) and Lord” rather than one absolute divine Sovereign under two titles. Propose ಒಡೆಯ (oḍeya, “owner/master,” a term of absolute possession without guru connotations) for δεσπότης, kept distinct from ಕರ್ತ for κύριος: “ನಮ್ಮ ಏಕ ಒಡೆಯನೂ ಕರ್ತನೂ ಆಗಿರುವ ಯೇಸು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನನ್ನು” (“…our only Owner-Master and Lord, Jesus Christ…“). |
| κύριον…Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν | kyrion Iēsoun Christon | ”Lord Jesus Christ” | — | “Lord Jesus Christ” | Denial of Christ’s exclusive Lordship — Lordship of Christ doctrine | κύριος = REUSE (baseline) ಕರ್ತ, Critical; Ἰησοῦς = REUSE (baseline) ಯೇಸು; Χριστός = REUSE ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ. |
| ἀρνούμενοι | arnoumenoi | ”denying” | to disown, repudiate | ”denying,” “disowning,” “renouncing” | The false teachers’ functional apostasy — denial in life/conduct if not always in explicit confession | NEW. ನಿರಾಕರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ (nirākarisuttiddāre). Medium risk. |
Jude 1:5
Greek: Ὑπομνῆσαι δὲ ὑμᾶς βούλομαι, εἰδότας ὑμᾶς ἅπαξ πάντα, ὅτι [ὁ κύριος/Ἰησοῦς] λαὸν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου σώσας τὸ δεύτερον τοὺς μὴ πιστεύσαντας ἀπώλεσεν,
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ὑπομνῆσαι | hypomnēsai | ”to remind” | recalling known truth rather than teaching new truth | ”remind,” “call to mind” | Jude’s method throughout: reminding of settled truth, not innovating — reinforces “faith once delivered” | NEW. ಜ್ಞಾಪಿಸು (jñāpisu). Low risk. |
| [ὁ κύριος / Ἰησοῦς] | ho kyrios / Iēsous | ”the Lord / Jesus” (textual variant) | Many early and best manuscripts (followed by NA28) read Ἰησοῦς, attributing the Exodus deliverance and the subsequent judgment directly to the pre-incarnate Christ | ”the Lord,” “Jesus” | CRITICAL christological note: if Ἰησοῦς is followed, Jude affirms Christ’s active pre-existence and lordship over OT redemptive history — a strong Deity-of-Christ statement. Translators must decide and flag this textual choice explicitly for theologian review. | Ἰησοῦς = REUSE (baseline) ಯೇಸು, Critical. Flag: whichever textual reading is followed, a translator note must record the choice and its significance for the Deity of Christ doctrine. |
| σώσας | sōsas | ”having saved” (aorist participle of σῴζω) | verb form of σωτηρία | ”saved,” “having delivered” | The Exodus deliverance as a type/pattern of salvation, but note the same one who saves also judges unbelief | Verb of REUSE (baseline) root ರಕ್ಷಣೆ → ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿ (rakṣisi). Critical. |
| τοὺς μὴ πιστεύσαντας | tous mē pisteusantas | ”those who did not believe” | πιστεύω, verb form of πίστις | ”those who did not believe,” “the unbelieving” | Ties belief/unbelief (not ethnic or ritual status) to the dividing line for judgment even within God’s own redeemed people — an OT warning type | Verb of REUSE (baseline) root ನಂಬಿಕೆ → ನಂಬದವರನ್ನು (nambadavarannu). High. |
| ἀπώλεσεν | apōlesen | ”destroyed” | ἀπόλλυμι, “to destroy, bring to ruin, cause to perish” (recurs vv.10 φθείρονται, 11 ἀπώλοντο) | “destroyed,” “brought to ruin” | The first of Jude’s three OT judgment types (Israel, angels, Sodom) — establishes the pattern | NEW — HIGH. ನಾಶಮಾಡಿದನು (nāśamāḍidanu), from ನಾಶ (nāśa, “destruction/ruin”). Flag: must be read as personal, moral, final divine judgment upon unbelief, not an impersonal decay or the dissolution of a cycle (guard against yuga-cycle destruction/re-creation associations). |
Jude 1:6
Greek: ἀγγέλους τε τοὺς μὴ τηρήσαντας τὴν ἑαυτῶν ἀρχὴν ἀλλὰ ἀπολιπόντας τὸ ἴδιον οἰκητήριον εἰς κρίσιν μεγάλης ἡμέρας δεσμοῖς ἀϊδίοις ὑπὸ ζόφον τετήρηκεν·
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγγέλους | angelous | ”angels” | ἄγγελος = messenger; NT technical sense = created spiritual beings | ”angels” | Second OT-adjacent warning type: the fallen angels | NEW. ದೂತರು (dūtaru) or ದೇವದೂತರು (dēvadūtaru). Low-Medium risk; established Kannada Christian usage. |
| τοὺς μὴ τηρήσαντας τὴν ἑαυτῶν ἀρχήν | tous mē tērēsantas tēn heautōn archēn | ”who did not keep their own domain/first estate” | τηρέω = keep, guard, maintain; ἀρχή = rule, domain, original position/rank | ”who did not keep their own position,” “who abandoned their proper domain” | The verb τηρέω (keep) is a keyword across the whole letter (see v.1 τετηρημένοις, v.13, v.21, v.24 φυλάξαι) — here used negatively of angels who failed to keep their assigned place | τηρέω = NEW — the letter’s central keyword; propose ಕಾಪಾಡು/ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸು (kāpāḍu/saṃrakṣisu, “guard, keep, preserve”) as the standard rendering across all occurrences. HIGH risk: Jude uses τηρέω both of God keeping believers (positive, vv.1, 21, 24) and of judgment “keeping” the disobedient for punishment (ironic, negative, here and v.13). Consistency across both senses is essential to preserve the letter’s literary structure; translator notes should mark each occurrence. |
| ἀπολιπόντας τὸ ἴδιον οἰκητήριον | apolipontas to idion oikētērion | ”having abandoned their own dwelling place” | οἰκητήριον = habitation, proper dwelling | ”left their proper dwelling,” “abandoned their own home” | Angels’ rebellion pictured as abandoning an assigned place, paralleling humanity’s transgression of created order | NEW. ತಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಂತ ನಿವಾಸವನ್ನು ತೊರೆದವರು. Low-Medium risk. |
| κρίσιν μεγάλης ἡμέρας | krisin megalēs hēmeras | ”judgment of the great day” | κρίσις = the process/act of judging (distinct from κρίμα, the verdict itself); “the great day” = the eschatological Day of Judgment | ”judgment of the great day,” “the great Day’s judgment” | Points to the final eschatological judgment, tying angelic and human judgment together into one Day | NEW — HIGH. ಮಹಾ ದಿನದ ನ್ಯಾಯತೀರ್ಪು (mahā dinada nyāyatīrpu). Same forensic, personal-God framing required as κρίμα in v.4; avoid any impersonal/cyclical judgment-of-cosmic-ages reading. |
| δεσμοῖς ἀϊδίοις | desmois aidiois | ”with eternal chains/bonds” | ἀΐδιος = everlasting, perpetual (distinct root from αἰώνιος but overlapping meaning) | “eternal chains,” “everlasting bonds” | The fallen angels’ present imprisonment awaiting final judgment | NEW. ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಬಂಧನಗಳು (śāśvata bandhanagaḷu). Medium risk. |
| ὑπὸ ζόφον | hypo zophon | ”under gloom/nether darkness” | ζόφος = thick darkness, gloom (recurs v.13) | “under darkness,” “in gloom” | The place of the fallen angels’ confinement | NEW. ಕಾರ್ಗತ್ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ (kārgattaleyalli) or ಅಂಧಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ. Low risk. |
| τετήρηκεν | tetērēken | ”has kept” (perfect of τηρέω) | see above | ”has kept,” “has reserved” | Ironic reversal: the same “keeping” verb used of believers’ security (v.1) is here used of judgment reserved for the disobedient | See τηρέω note above. HIGH risk — consistency required. |
Jude 1:7
Greek: ὡς Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα καὶ αἱ περὶ αὐτὰς πόλεις τὸν ὅμοιον τρόπον τούτοις ἐκπορνεύσασαι καὶ ἀπελθοῦσαι ὀπίσω σαρκὸς ἑτέρας, πρόκεινται δεῖγμα πυρὸς αἰωνίου δίκην ὑπέχουσαι.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα | Sodoma kai Gomorra | proper names | — | “Sodom and Gomorrah” | Third OT warning type: cities destroyed for sexual immorality — the paradigmatic biblical judgment narrative | NEW — established proper names. ಸೊದೋಮ ಮತ್ತು ಗೊಮೋರ (Sodōma mattu Gomōra). Low risk; standard Kannada OT transliteration. |
| ἐκπορνεύσασαι | ekporneusasai | ”having given themselves to sexual immorality” | πορνεία root, intensified by ἐκ- | ”having indulged in sexual immorality,” “given over to fornication” | Names the specific sin exemplifying Sodom’s judgment | NEW. ವ್ಯಭಿಚಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದವರು (vyabhicāradalli biddavaru). Medium risk. |
| σαρκὸς ἑτέρας | sarkos heteras | ”strange/other flesh” | ἕτερος = other, different in kind | ”unnatural desire,” “strange flesh” | Denotes the perverse and unnatural character of Sodom’s sin | NEW. ಅನ್ಯ ಶರೀರದ ಬಯಕೆ. Medium risk. |
| δεῖγμα | deigma | ”example, sample, specimen” | a visible instance offered as a warning pattern | ”example,” “warning example” | Sodom stands as an object lesson of the certainty of judgment | NEW. ದೃಷ್ಟಾಂತ (dṛṣṭānta). Low risk. |
| πυρὸς αἰωνίου | pyros aiōniou | ”of eternal fire” | αἰώνιος = eternal, without end | ”eternal fire,” “everlasting fire” | The eternal nature of the judgment on Sodom prefigures final judgment | NEW — HIGH. ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಬೆಂಕಿ (śāśvata beṅki). Flag: αἰώνιος judgment is linear and final, not part of a repeating cosmic cycle of destruction and re-creation (cf. yuga-cycle caution already flagged in baseline’s “fulfillment_of_prophecy” entry). |
| δίκην ὑπέχουσαι | dikēn hypechousai | ”undergoing punishment/penalty” | δίκη = penalty, just retribution | ”suffering punishment,” “undergoing a penalty” | Present, ongoing display of a completed judgment | NEW. ದಂಡನೆ ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ (daṇḍane anubhavisuttiruva). Low-Medium risk. |
Jude 1:8
Greek: Ὁμοίως μέντοι καὶ οὗτοι ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι σάρκα μὲν μιαίνουσιν κυριότητα δὲ ἀθετοῦσιν δόξας δὲ βλασφημοῦσιν.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι | enypniazomenoi | ”dreaming, relying on dreams/visions” | claiming private revelatory experience as authority | ”relying on their dreams,” “these dreamers” | The false teachers claim visionary authority to override apostolic teaching — relevant to Inspiration of Scripture concerns | NEW. ಕನಸು ಕಾಣುವವರು (kanasu kāṇuvavaru). Medium risk. |
| σάρκα…μιαίνουσιν | sarka miainousin | ”defile the flesh” | μιαίνω = to stain, pollute, defile morally | ”defile the flesh,” “pollute their bodies” | Moral corruption flowing from false teaching | NEW. ಶರೀರವನ್ನು ಮಲಿನಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. Low-Medium risk. |
| κυριότητα…ἀθετοῦσιν | kyriotēta athetousin | ”reject/set aside lordship, dominion, authority” | κυριότης = lordship/dominion, abstract noun cognate with κύριος; ἀθετέω = to reject, nullify, set at nothing | ”reject authority,” “despise lordship,” “set aside dominion” | Direct rejection of divinely established authority — echoes the letter’s Lordship-of-Christ concern and touches church-authority structures | NEW — HIGH. Use ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವ (kartṛtva), already the Kannada root the baseline doctrine registry uses for “Lordship of Christ” (ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವ), keeping it visibly cognate with ಕರ್ತ (κύριος). ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವವನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (kartṛtvavannu tiraskarisuttāre). Preserving the ಕರ್ತ-ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವ word link is important so readers see the connection between rejecting “lordship” here and denying “the Lord” in v.4. |
| δόξας…βλασφημοῦσιν | doxas blasphēmousin | ”blaspheme glorious ones / glories” | δόξα here plural, referring to glorious (angelic) beings/dignitaries, not to God’s glory in the abstract — a distinct sense from δόξα elsewhere | ”slander/blaspheme celestial/glorious beings,” “reviling angelic majesties” | The false teachers speak evil even of angelic powers (contrasted with Michael’s restraint in v.9) — arrogance and lack of proper reverence | δόξα = REUSE (baseline) ಮಹಿಮೆ for the ordinary sense, but flag HIGH: here plural δόξας refers to glorious/majestic beings (interpreted variously as angels, both good and fallen), a distinct technical sense requiring a translator note so readers do not read it as “blaspheme God’s glory” alone.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Μιχαὴλ ὁ ἀρχάγγελος | Michaēl ho archangelos | ”Michael the archangel” | ἀρχάγγελος = chief/ruling angel | ”Michael the archangel” | Named angelic figure exemplifying reverent restraint — model for how believers should (not) speak against spiritual powers | NEW — established proper name + title. ಮೀಕಾಯೇಲ್ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ದೂತ (Mīkāyēl pradhāna dūta). Low risk. |
| τῷ διαβόλῳ | tō diabolō | ”the devil” | διάβολος = slanderer, accuser | ”the devil” | The devil as a real, personal spiritual antagonist, disputing over Moses’ body (drawing on Jewish tradition) | NEW. ಸೈತಾನ (Saitāna), the established Kannada Christian term. Low-Medium risk. |
| Μωϋσέως | Mōuseōs | ”of Moses” | — | “Moses” | Proper name; established in baseline transliteration standards | REUSE (baseline transliteration list) ಮೋಶೆ (Mōśe). |
| κρίσιν…βλασφημίας | krisin blasphēmias | ”a judgment/accusation of blasphemy/slander” | κρίσις here in the sense of a condemning verdict/accusation | ”a reviling judgment,” “a slanderous accusation” | Michael refrains from even the highest angel pronouncing a reviling verdict, unlike the false teachers who freely blaspheme — a rebuke of arrogance | NEW — HIGH, same κρίσις root flagged in v.6. ದೂಷಣೆಯ ತೀರ್ಪು. |
| Ἐπιτιμήσαι σοι κύριος | Epitimēsai soi kyrios | ”The Lord rebuke you” | ἐπιτιμάω = rebuke, censure sharply | ”The Lord rebuke you” | Michael appeals to the Lord’s own authority rather than asserting his own — models proper deference to κύριος’s exclusive authority | κύριος = REUSE (baseline) ಕರ್ತ. ἐπιτιμάω = NEW, ಗದರಿಸಲಿ (gadarisali). Low-Medium risk. |
Jude 1:10
Greek: οὗτοι δὲ ὅσα μὲν οὐκ οἴδασιν βλασφημοῦσιν, ὅσα δὲ φυσικῶς ὡς τὰ ἄλογα ζῷα ἐπίστανται, ἐν τούτοις φθείρονται.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἄλογα ζῷα | aloga zōa | ”irrational animals/creatures” | ἄλογος = without reason/word (λόγος) | “unreasoning animals,” “irrational creatures,” “brute beasts” | The false teachers are worse than Michael (v.9) in reverence and no better than instinct-driven animals in their moral understanding | NEW. ಬುದ್ಧಿಹೀನ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು (buddhihīna prāṇigaḷu). Low risk. |
| φθείρονται | phtheirontai | ”are destroyed, corrupted, ruined” | φθείρω, the same “destruction” word-family theme as v.5’s ἀπώλεσεν and v.11’s ἀπώλοντο | ”are destroyed,” “are corrupted/ruined” | Their instinct-driven indulgence becomes the very means of their ruin | NEW — HIGH, part of the recurring “destruction” theme; ನಾಶವಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ (nāśavāguttāre), consistent with ನಾಶ root used elsewhere. |
Jude 1:11
Greek: οὐαὶ αὐτοῖς, ὅτι τῇ ὁδῷ τοῦ Κάϊν ἐπορεύθησαν, καὶ τῇ πλάνῃ τοῦ Βαλαὰμ μισθοῦ ἐξεχύθησαν, καὶ τῇ ἀντιλογίᾳ τοῦ Κόρε ἀπώλοντο.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οὐαί | ouai | ”woe” | interjection of prophetic judgment/lament | ”woe,” “alas” | Prophetic pronouncement of coming judgment, echoing OT prophetic woes | NEW. ಅಯ್ಯೋ (ayyō). Low risk; established interjection. |
| ὁδῷ τοῦ Κάϊν | hodō tou Kain | ”the way of Cain” | Κάϊν, proper name | ”the way of Cain” | Cain as OT type of murderous, self-willed rejection of God’s instruction | NEW — established OT name. ಕಾಯಿನನ ಮಾರ್ಗ (Kāyinana mārga). Low risk. |
| πλάνῃ τοῦ Βαλαάμ | planē tou Balaam | ”the error of Balaam” | πλάνη = wandering, error, deception; Βαλαάμ, proper name | ”the error of Balaam” | Balaam as OT type of a prophet corrupted by financial gain — relevant to false teachers’ profit motive (cf. v.16 “flattering for advantage”) | NEW — established OT name. ಬಿಳಾಮನ ತಪ್ಪು ದಾರಿ (Biḷāmana tappu dāri). Low-Medium risk. |
| μισθοῦ ἐξεχύθησαν | misthou exechythēsan | ”poured themselves out for hire/wage” | μισθός = wage, reward, payment | ”rushed for profit,” “abandoned themselves to gain” | Sharp indictment of teaching-for-profit, a live concern in any religious economy including Karnataka’s | NEW. ಲಾಭಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. Medium risk. |
| ἀντιλογίᾳ τοῦ Κόρε | antilogia tou Kore | ”the rebellion/contradiction of Korah” | ἀντιλογία = speaking against, contradiction, rebellion; Κόρε, proper name | ”the rebellion of Korah” | Korah as OT type of rebellion against divinely appointed authority (Numbers 16) | NEW — established OT name. ಕೋರಹನ ದಂಗೆ (Kōrahana daṅge). Low-Medium risk. |
| ἀπώλοντο | apōlonto | ”perished” | see ἀπόλλυμι family, vv.5,10 | ”perished,” “were destroyed” | Third instance of the destruction word-family, unifying the three OT judgment types under one verb-family | NEW — HIGH, ನಾಶವಾದರು (nāśavādaru), consistent rendering required across vv.5, 10, 11. |
Jude 1:12
Greek: οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἐν ταῖς ἀγάπαις ὑμῶν σπιλάδες συνευωχούμενοι ἀφόβως, ἑαυτοὺς ποιμαίνοντες, νεφέλαι ἄνυδροι ὑπὸ ἀνέμων παραφερόμεναι, δένδρα φθινοπωρινὰ ἄκαρπα δὶς ἀποθανόντα ἐκριζωθέντα,
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ταῖς ἀγάπαις ὑμῶν | tais agapais hymōn | ”your love feasts” | ἀγάπη plural, technical term for the early church’s communal fellowship meal (often associated with the Lord’s Supper) | “love feasts,” “fellowship meals” | The false teachers corrupt the very meal meant to embody Christian ἀγάπη — a sharp irony | NEW. ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಔತಣಗಳು (prītiya autaṇagaḷu). Medium risk; distinct technical liturgical sense of ἀγάπη from its ordinary “love” meaning (see also v.2, v.21). |
| σπιλάδες | spilades | ”hidden reefs” (or, in a variant reading, “spots/blemishes” = σπίλοι) | σπιλάς properly = a submerged rock dangerous to ships; some MSS/interpreters read the near-homonym for “blemishes, stains" | "hidden reefs,” “blemishes,” “hazards” | Ambiguous image: either dangerous hidden hazards at the church’s fellowship meals, or moral stains upon them — both readings are damning | NEW. ಜಲದೊಳಗಿನ ಬಂಡೆಗಳು (jaladoḷagina baṇḍegaḷu, “submerged rocks”) preferred, with translator note on the ಕಳಂಕ (kaḷaṅka, “stain/blemish”) alternative reading. Medium risk; flag textual ambiguity for reviewer. |
| ἑαυτοὺς ποιμαίνοντες | heautous poimainontes | ”shepherding [only] themselves” | ποιμαίνω = to shepherd, tend a flock (pastoral leadership term) | “feeding only themselves,” “shepherds who feed only themselves” | Indicts false leaders for self-serving ministry rather than caring for the flock | NEW. ತಮ್ಮನ್ನೇ ಕುರಿಕಾಯುವವರು (tammannē kurikāyuvavaru). Medium risk; relevant to pastoral-office/ministry vocabulary. |
| δένδρα…ἄκαρπα | dendra akarpa | ”fruitless trees” | ἄκαρπος = without fruit | ”fruitless trees,” “trees without fruit” | Spiritual fruitlessness despite outward appearance of growth (autumn trees, in leaf but without fruit) | NEW. ಫಲರಹಿತ ಮರಗಳು (phalarahita maragaḷu). Low-Medium risk. |
Jude 1:13
Greek: κύματα ἄγρια θαλάσσης ἐπαφρίζοντα τὰς ἑαυτῶν αἰσχύνας, ἀστέρες πλανῆται οἷς ὁ ζόφος τοῦ σκότους εἰς αἰῶνα τετήρηται.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐπαφρίζοντα τὰς ἑαυτῶν αἰσχύνας | epaphrizonta tas heautōn aischynas | ”foaming out their own shame” | αἰσχύνη = shame, disgrace | ”foaming up their own shame,” “casting up their own disgrace like foam” | Vivid image of visible, public exposure of the false teachers’ shameful conduct | NEW. ತಮ್ಮ ನಾಚಿಕೆಗೇಡನ್ನು ನೊರೆಯಂತೆ ಕಾರುತ್ತಿರುವ. Low-Medium risk. |
| ἀστέρες πλανῆται | asteres planētai | ”wandering stars” | πλανήτης = wanderer (root of English “planet”); figuratively, one who leads others astray, cognate with πλάνη (v.11) | “wandering stars,” “shooting stars” | Cosmic image of instability and false guidance — those who should give fixed direction (like stars for navigation) instead wander | NEW. ಅಲೆದಾಡುವ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಗಳು (aledāḍuva nakṣatragaḷu). Low risk. |
| ὁ ζόφος τοῦ σκότους εἰς αἰῶνα τετήρηται | ho zophos tou skotous eis aiōna tetērētai | ”the gloom of darkness has been kept/reserved forever” | τηρέω again (see v.1, v.6, v.21, v.24) | “for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever” | Third occurrence of the letter’s “keeping” keyword, again in its ironic negative sense — judgment “kept,” paralleling believers being “kept” for glory | See τηρέω note (v.6). HIGH — consistency of ಕಾಪಾಡು/ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸು required. |
Jude 1:14-15
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Προεφήτευσεν | Proephēteusen | ”prophesied” | verb form of προφητεία/προφήτης | ”prophesied” | Jude cites a prophecy attributed to Enoch — from the non-canonical Book of 1 Enoch — as authoritative testimony to coming judgment | REUSE (baseline) ಪ್ರವಾದನೆ/ಪ್ರವಾದಿ root → ಪ್ರವಾದಿಸಿದನು. HIGH — special note required. This is a unique complexity for the “Inspiration of Scripture” doctrine: Jude quotes material from 1 Enoch, a text outside the Hebrew canon, as a true prophetic word. Translators/theologians must be briefed that this does not equate 1 Enoch with inspired Scripture generally; Jude, as an inspired apostolic writer, may cite true statements from any source (cf. Paul citing pagan poets in Acts 17:28) without thereby canonizing the source document. This point deserves explicit treatment distinguishing it from, e.g., the Sharana vachana corpus or Haridasa kirtane, which Kannada readers might otherwise assume occupy a similar “quotable wisdom” category. |
| Ἑνὼχ | Henōch | proper name | ἕβδομος ἀπὸ Ἀδάμ, “seventh from Adam" | "Enoch” | Genealogical note underscoring Enoch’s antiquity and the prophecy’s ancient origin | NEW — established OT name. ಹನೋಕ (Hanōka); ಆದಾಮ (Ādāma) for Ἀδάμ. Low risk. |
| ἐν ἁγίαις μυριάσιν αὐτοῦ | en hagiais myriasin autou | ”with his holy myriads” | μυριάς = ten thousand, an innumerable host; ἅγιος = holy | ”with his holy ten thousands,” “with his holy angels in myriads” | Pictures the eschatological Lord’s coming in overwhelming angelic glory to execute judgment | ἅγιος = REUSE (baseline) ಪವಿತ್ರ. μυριάς = NEW, ಕೋಟ್ಯಂತರ (kōṭyantara, “myriad/countless”) or ಅಸಂಖ್ಯಾತ ಪವಿತ್ರ ದೂತಸಮೂಹ. Medium risk. |
| ποιῆσαι κρίσιν κατὰ πάντων | poiēsai krisin kata pantōn | ”to execute judgment against all” | κρίσις again | ”to execute judgment on all,” “to judge everyone” | Universal scope of final judgment — every person, not only the false teachers, stands under it | HIGH, consistent with κρίσις root established above. |
| ἐλέγξαι πᾶσαν ψυχήν | elenxai pasan psychēn | ”to convict/expose every soul” | ἐλέγχω = to convict, expose, reprove | ”to convict every soul,” “to expose every person” | Comprehensive exposure of guilt at the final judgment | NEW. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರನ್ನೂ ಖಂಡಿಸಲು (pratiyobbarannū khaṇḍisalu). Medium risk. |
| ἀσεβείας / ἠσέβησαν / ἀσεβεῖς | asebeias / ēsebēsan / asebeis | ”ungodliness / they were ungodly / ungodly ones” | ἀσέβεια family, fourfold repetition in one verse for rhetorical emphasis | ”ungodliness… ungodly deeds… ungodly sinners” | Jude’s rhetorical hammering of ἀσέβεια (occurring four times in v.15 alone) makes this the letter’s dominant descriptor of the false teachers | See ἀσεβεῖς note (v.4). HIGH — same ಭಕ್ತಿಹೀನ root required in every occurrence for consistency and rhetorical effect. |
| σκληρῶν | sklērōn | ”hard/harsh things” | σκληρός = hard, harsh, difficult | ”harsh words,” “hard things” | The content of their blasphemous speech against the Lord | NEW. ಕಠಿಣ ಮಾತುಗಳು. Low risk. |
| ἁμαρτωλοί | hamartōloi | ”sinners” | ἁμαρτία family | ”sinners” | Combines with ἀσεβεῖς for maximal indictment | REUSE (baseline) ಪಾಪ root → ಪಾಪಿಗಳು (pāpigaḷu). High. |
Jude 1:16
Greek: Οὗτοί εἰσιν γογγυσταί, μεμψίμοιροι, κατὰ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας ἑαυτῶν πορευόμενοι, καὶ τὸ στόμα αὐτῶν λαλεῖ ὑπέρογκα, θαυμάζοντες πρόσωπα ὠφελείας χάριν.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γογγυσταί | gongystai | ”grumblers” | onomatopoeic term for muttered complaint | ”grumblers,” “murmurers” | Echoes Israel’s wilderness grumbling (an implicit callback to v.5’s Exodus warning) | NEW. ಗುಣುಗುಣಿಸುವವರು (guṇuguṇisuvavaru). Low risk. |
| μεμψίμοιροι | mempsimoiroi | ”malcontents, fault-finders with one’s lot” | discontented with one’s circumstances/portion | ”malcontents,” “complainers” | Chronic dissatisfaction as a spiritual symptom | NEW. ಅತೃಪ್ತರು (atṛptaru). Low risk. |
| ἐπιθυμίας ἑαυτῶν | epithymias heautōn | ”their own lusts/desires” | ἐπιθυμία = strong desire, often but not always negative; here clearly disordered desire (recurs v.18) | “their own lusts,” “their own passions” | Self-ruled desire as the false teachers’ governing principle, contrasted with obedience to God | NEW — HIGH. ದುರಾಶೆ (durāśe, “evil desire/greed”) or ಸ್ವಂತ ಆಸೆ. Flag: distinguish disordered ἐπιθυμία from the disciplined desire-regulation emphasized in some Hindu ethical systems (e.g., renunciation of kāma as a stage of life) — Jude’s concern is desire ungoverned by submission to God, not desire as such. |
| ὑπέρογκα | hyperonka | ”swollen, bombastic [words]“ | ὑπέρογκος = excessively puffed up | ”bombastic words,” “arrogant boasts” | Empty, self-inflating speech | NEW. ಅಹಂಕಾರದ ಮಾತುಗಳು (ahaṅkārada mātugaḷu). Low risk. |
| θαυμάζοντες πρόσωπα ὠφελείας χάριν | thaumazontes prosōpa ōpheleias charin | ”showing partiality/flattering faces for the sake of advantage” | πρόσωπον θαυμάζω = idiom for flattering/showing favoritism | ”flattering people for their own advantage,” “showing favoritism for profit” | Ties back to Balaam’s profit motive (v.11) — false teaching driven by self-interest | NEW. ಲಾಭಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮುಖಸ್ತುತಿ ಮಾಡುವವರು (lābhakkāgi mukhastuti māḍuvavaru). Medium risk. |
Jude 1:17-18
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| τῶν ἀποστόλων | tōn apostolōn | ”of the apostles” | ἀπόστολος | ”the apostles” | Grounds the warning in prior apostolic teaching, reinforcing the “faith once delivered” theme with a second layer of authoritative testimony | REUSE (baseline) ಅಪೊಸ್ತಲ. Medium. |
| ἐσχάτου τοῦ χρόνου | eschatou tou chronou | ”the last time” | ἔσχατος = last, final | ”the last time,” “the last days” | Eschatological marker; the false teachers’ rise is itself a predicted sign of the end times | NEW. ಕಡೇ ಕಾಲ (kaḍē kāla). Medium risk. |
| ἐμπαῖκται | empaiktai | ”scoffers, mockers” | ἐμπαίζω = to mock, deride | ”scoffers,” “mockers” | Apostolic prophecy of coming mockers, now fulfilled in the false teachers Jude addresses — a fulfillment-of-prophecy note parallel to v.4 | NEW. ಪರಿಹಾಸ್ಯ ಮಾಡುವವರು (parihāsya māḍuvavaru). Medium risk. |
| κατὰ τὰς ἑαυτῶν ἐπιθυμίας…τῶν ἀσεβειῶν | kata tas heautōn epithymias tōn asebeiōn | ”following their own ungodly lusts/desires” | combines ἐπιθυμία (v.16) and ἀσέβεια (vv.4,15) word-families | ”following their own ungodly passions” | Summarizes the letter’s twin diagnostic categories for the false teachers | See notes above; HIGH, consistent roots required. |
Jude 1:19
Greek: Οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἀποδιορίζοντες, ψυχικοί, πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀποδιορίζοντες | apodiorizontes | ”those who cause divisions, who separate themselves off” | rare compound, “to mark off/separate" | "those who cause divisions,” “who create factions” | Names the false teachers’ ecclesiological effect: schism within the “common salvation” community of v.3 | NEW. ವಿಭಜನೆ ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುವವರು (vibhajane uṇṭumāḍuvavaru). Medium risk; ties to Church-as-God’s-people doctrine concerns already flagged in the baseline. |
| ψυχικοί | psychikoi | ”soulish, natural [ones]“ | ψυχικός, from ψυχή (“soul, natural life”), contrasted with πνευματικός (“spiritual,” governed by God’s Spirit) — a Pauline anthropological distinction (cf. 1 Cor 2:14) also present here | ”worldly,” “unspiritual,” “natural,” “devoid of the Spirit” | Describes a person whose life is governed by natural/animal instinct rather than the Holy Spirit — the opposite of the Spirit-filled praying described in v.20 | NEW — HIGH. Propose ಪ್ರಾಪಂಚಿಕ ಸ್ವಭಾವದವರು (prāpañcika svabhāvadavaru, “of worldly/natural disposition”). Flag: avoid rendering with any word built on ಆತ್ಮ alone, since Kannada philosophical vocabulary (ಆತ್ಮ, ಜೀವಾತ್ಮ, ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ) carries strong Vedantic freight about the soul’s nature and its relationship to the Ultimate — the same collision the baseline already flags for ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ under “Holy Spirit.” ψυχικός here is a negative anthropological diagnosis (unregenerate, Spirit-less humanity), not a description of the soul’s metaphysical status. |
| πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες | pneuma mē echontes | ”not having [the] Spirit” | πνεῦμα here anarthrous but contextually referring to the Holy Spirit (contrast with v.20’s ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ) | “devoid of the Spirit,” “not having the Spirit” | Defines the false teachers as unregenerate — decisively lacking the Holy Spirit, in contrast to the true believers of v.20 | REUSE (baseline) ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, Critical — render as ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ ಇಲ್ಲದವರು (Pavitrātma illadavaru) to keep the reference unambiguously to the personal, Trinitarian Holy Spirit rather than an impersonal “spirit”/“life-force” (ಪ್ರಾಣಶಕ್ತಿ) reading. |
Jude 1:20-21
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| τῇ ἁγιωτάτῃ…πίστει | tē hagiōtatē pistei | ”most holy faith” (superlative) | ἅγιος superlative + πίστις; here, as in v.3, the objective body of doctrine, now qualified as “most holy" | "your most holy faith” | The believers’ secure possession — the same deposit of faith they are to contend for in v.3 — described in its holiness/set-apartness | ἅγιος = REUSE (baseline) ಪವಿತ್ರ; πίστις = REUSE (baseline) ನಂಬಿಕೆ. ಅತಿ ಪವಿತ್ರವಾದ ನಿಮ್ಮ ನಂಬಿಕೆ. High. |
| ἐποικοδομοῦντες ἑαυτούς | epoikodomountes heautous | ”building yourselves up” | ἐποικοδομέω, edification/construction metaphor | ”building yourselves up,” “growing yourselves” | Positive counterpart to ἀποδιορίζοντες (v.19) — construction versus division | NEW, related to baseline’s edification root ಭಕ್ತಿವೃದ್ಧಿ (cf. “mutual_edification” doctrine ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಭಕ್ತಿವೃದ್ಧಿ). ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ನೀವೇ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ. Low-Medium risk. |
| ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ προσευχόμενοι | en pneumati hagiō proseuchomenoi | ”praying in [the] Holy Spirit” | πνεῦμα ἅγιον + προσεύχομαι | ”praying in the Holy Spirit” | Prayer empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit — positive counterpoint to v.19’s Spirit-less false teachers | πνεῦμα ἅγιον = REUSE (baseline) ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, Critical. προσεύχομαι = REUSE concept (baseline doctrine registry “prayer_and_intercession”) → ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸುತ್ತಾ. |
| ἑαυτοὺς ἐν ἀγάπῃ θεοῦ τηρήσατε | heautous en agapē theou tērēsate | ”keep yourselves in the love of God” (imperative) | τηρέω again, now in the imperative, active voice — believers are commanded to “keep” themselves even as God “keeps” them (v.1, v.24) | “keep yourselves in God’s love” | CRITICAL nuance for “Kept by God and Presented Blameless”: Jude holds together God’s sovereign keeping (passive, given) and the believer’s responsible self-keeping (active, commanded) without contradiction — both must be visible in translation | τηρέω = HIGH, same root ಕಾಪಾಡು/ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸು as elsewhere: ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ನೀವೇ ದೇವರ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಪಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿರಿ. Flag for translator note explaining the divine-keeping/human-responsibility pairing across vv.1, 21, 24. ἀγάπη = NEW, ಪ್ರೀತಿ (prīti). Medium-High risk: distinguish the relational, covenantal love of God for his own from the erotic-mystical devotional love (śṛṅgāra bhakti) central to Haridasa Krishna devotion (the gopis’ love for Krishna) and from the intimate personal devotion of Lingayat ishtalinga worship — God’s ἀγάπη here is holy, self-giving, covenant-keeping love, not romanticized divine-human intimacy. |
| προσδεχόμενοι τὸ ἔλεος | prosdechomenoi to eleos | ”awaiting/looking eagerly for the mercy” | προσδέχομαι = to await eagerly, expect; ἔλεος = mercy, compassion shown to the undeserving (recurs vv.22, 23) | “waiting for the mercy,” “awaiting the mercy” | Frames final salvation itself as an act of God’s mercy still to be consummated — central to “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering” | NEW — HIGH. ἔλεος: propose ಕರುಣೆ (karuṇe), the standard Kannada term for compassionate mercy. Flag: Karnataka’s devotional traditions also speak richly of a deity’s karuṇā toward the devotee (e.g., Chamundeshwari as Karuṇāmayi, “full of compassion,” in Shakta tradition; bhakti poets celebrating Krishna’s or Shiva’s compassion). This is a genuine point of partial cultural resonance, but doctrinally, biblical ἔλεος is mercy extended by a personal God to rescue the objectively guilty from just judgment (see vv.22-23), not the devotional intimacy or karma-softening compassion sometimes associated with a chosen personal deity; translators should preserve the judicial/rescue backdrop (vv.14-15, 22-23) alongside ಕರುಣೆ so the term is not read as generic warm feeling. |
| εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον | eis zōēn aiōnion | ”unto eternal life” | ζωὴ αἰώνιος, standing NT phrase for the final, unending life of the age to come | ”eternal life,” “everlasting life” | The goal and destination of God’s mercy — a distinctly personal, unending, relational life with God | NEW — CRITICAL (treat with same rigor as “salvation” in the baseline forbidden-substitutions list). Propose ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ (nityajīva), the established Kannada Christian term. NEVER ಮೋಕ್ಷ or ಮುಕ್ತಿ — the same forbidden substitutions flagged for “salvation” apply here, since “eternal life” names the same reality from a different angle (unending personal life with God, not release from a rebirth cycle or dissolution into the impersonal Absolute). |
Jude 1:22-23
Greek (representative critical text; see textual note below): καὶ οὓς μὲν ἐλεᾶτε διακρινομένους, οὓς δὲ σῴζετε ἐκ πυρὸς ἁρπάζοντες, οὓς δὲ ἐλεᾶτε ἐν φόβῳ, μισοῦντες καὶ τὸν ἀπὸ τῆς σαρκὸς ἐσπιλωμένον χιτῶνα.
Textual note: The Greek manuscript tradition of vv.22-23 shows notable variation (a two-clause vs. three-clause structure, and variation between ἐλεᾶτε/ἐλέγχετε in the first clause). Translators must flag this passage for textual-critical review; the analysis below follows the widely-attested three-clause reading (NA28/most modern critical editions).
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐλεᾶτε διακρινομένους | eleate diakrinomenous | ”have mercy on those who are wavering/disputing/doubting” | ἐλεέω = show mercy (verb of ἔλεος); διακρίνομαι, middle/passive of διακρίνω, “to be at odds with oneself, waver, doubt" | "have mercy on those who doubt,” “be merciful to those who waver” | Names the first group to be rescued: the wavering, not-yet-fully-lost — core to “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering” | ἔλεος root = HIGH, as above, ಕರುಣೆ ತೋರಿಸಿ. διακρίνομαι = NEW — HIGH, ಸಂದೇಹಪಡುವವರು (sandēhapaḍuvavaru, “those who are doubting”) or ಅಲೆದಾಡುವವರು (aledāḍuvavaru, “those who are wavering/wandering”). Flag: this term must be read pastorally — a struggling, doubting believer, not yet an ἀσεβής false teacher — and treated with patient mercy rather than the severe judgment language of vv.4-16. |
| σῴζετε ἐκ πυρὸς ἁρπάζοντες | sōzete ek pyros harpazontes | ”save, snatching [them] out of the fire” | σῴζω (salvation word-family); ἁρπάζω = to seize, snatch forcibly and urgently (used elsewhere of the rapture, e.g. 1 Thess 4:17) | “save others, snatching them out of the fire,” “pulling them out of the fire” | Vivid, urgent rescue imagery — decisive intervention to save someone from otherwise-certain judgment (echoing Zechariah 3:2’s “a brand plucked from the fire”) | σῴζω = REUSE (baseline) root ರಕ್ಷಣೆ → ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿ, Critical. ἁρπάζω = NEW — HIGH, ಕಸಿದುಕೊಂಡು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿ (kasidukoṇḍu rakṣisi, “snatch and save”) or ಬೆಂಕಿಯಿಂದ ಎಳೆದು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿ (beṅkiyinda eḷedu rakṣisi, “pull out from the fire and save”). Ensure “fire” (ಬೆಂಕಿ) here is read as the same judgment-fire of v.7, tying the rescue directly to the letter’s judgment theme. |
| ἐλεᾶτε ἐν φόβῳ | eleate en phobō | ”have mercy, with fear” | φόβος = fear, reverent caution | ”show mercy, but with fear,” “have mercy mixed with fear” | Even in showing mercy, believers must retain a sober fear of being contaminated by the sin they are rescuing others from | NEW. ಭಯದಿಂದ ಕರುಣೆ ತೋರಿಸಿ (bhayadinda karuṇe tōrisi). Medium risk. |
| τὸν…ἐσπιλωμένον χιτῶνα | ton espilōmenon chitōna | ”the garment stained/defiled [by the flesh]“ | σπιλόω = to stain, defile; χιτών = tunic, garment | ”the garment stained by the flesh,” “the tunic defiled by sinful flesh” | Calls for hating even the outward trace/association of sin while still rescuing the sinner — a fine ethical balance | NEW. ಶರೀರದಿಂದ ಕಳಂಕಿತವಾದ ವಸ್ತ್ರ (śarīradinda kaḷaṅkitavāda vastra). Medium risk. |
PART B: REMAINDER OF THE BOOK — Jude 1:1-2 and 1:24-25
Jude is a single-chapter, 25-verse letter. Having treated the core passage (vv.3-23) verse-by-verse above, this section completes full-book coverage by analyzing the opening greeting (vv.1-2) and closing doxology (vv.24-25) — the only remaining verses in the book — with the same term-level rigor. No verse of Jude falls outside this document’s coverage.
Jude 1:1-2 (Opening Greeting)
Greek: Ἰούδας Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος, ἀδελφὸς δὲ Ἰακώβου, τοῖς ἐν θεῷ πατρὶ ἠγαπημένοις καὶ Ἰησοῦ Χριστῷ τετηρημένοις κλητοῖς· ἔλεος ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη καὶ ἀγάπη πληθυνθείη.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Theological meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ἰούδας | Ioudas | ”Jude/Judas” | proper name | ”Jude” | The author, traditionally identified as the half-brother of Jesus and of James | NEW — proper name. ಯೂದ (Yūda), distinguished in Kannada Bible tradition from ಯೂದಾ ಇಸ್ಕರಿಯೋತ (Judas Iscariot) by using the book-title form ಯೂದನ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆ. Low risk if the established Kannada Bible book-name convention is followed; flag to avoid any confusion with the betrayer. |
| Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος | Iēsou Christou doulos | ”a slave/bondservant of Jesus Christ” | δοῦλος = one who belongs wholly to a master, a slave/bondservant (not a hired servant, μισθωτός) | “servant,” “slave,” “bondservant” | Jude identifies himself by total, owned belonging to Christ, echoing OT prophetic self-designations (“servant of the LORD”) | NEW — CRITICAL. Propose ದಾಸ (dāsa). This term requires the single most careful cultural flag in the whole letter: ದಾಸ is the exact root of “Haridasa” (ಹರಿದಾಸ, “servant/slave of Hari/Krishna”), the title borne by the entire Kannada Vaishnava-bhakti poet-composer tradition (Purandara Dasa, Kanaka Dasa, Vijaya Dasa, and others) central to Karnataka’s devotional and musical heritage. A Kannada reader will very naturally hear ದಾಸ here as an echo of that tradition’s devotee-servant identity. This can be a genuine, positive point of cultural bridging — voluntary, total, joyful belonging to one’s Lord is a shared value — but the doctrinal distinction must be made explicit: Jude’s δοῦλος-status is belonging to the one particular Lord Jesus Christ by his prior redeeming claim (not the devotee’s own choice of one among several available personal deities, as a Haridasa devotee historically chose a specific chosen deity/iṣṭadevatā to serve). A translator note is required at first use distinguishing “bondservant of the one Lord who purchased him” from “devotee who has adopted a chosen deity’s service.” |
| ἀδελφὸς…Ἰακώβου | adelphos Iakōbou | ”brother of James” | proper name reference | ”brother of James” | Establishes Jude’s identity and authority via family relation to James (likely the Lord’s brother, leader of the Jerusalem church) | NEW — established name. ಯಾಕೋಬ (Yākōba). Low risk. |
| ἐν θεῷ πατρὶ ἠγαπημένοις | en theō patri ēgapēmenois | ”beloved in God the Father” | ἀγαπάω, perfect passive participle — a settled, completed state of being loved | ”beloved,” “loved” | Believers’ secure identity as objects of the Father’s settled, ongoing love — foundational for the letter’s assurance themes | NEW. ದೇವರಾದ ತಂದೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಿಯರಾದ (Dēvarāda Tandeyalli priyarāda). θεός = REUSE (baseline) ದೇವರು; πατήρ = REUSE (baseline) ತಂದೆ. Medium-High risk (consistent with baseline’s Father entry). |
| Ἰησοῦ Χριστῷ τετηρημένοις | Iēsou Christō tetērēmenois | ”kept for/by Jesus Christ” | τηρέω, perfect passive participle — same keyword introduced immediately in v.1, establishing the letter’s “kept” theme from its very first sentence | ”kept for Jesus Christ,” “preserved in Jesus Christ” | The letter’s opening statement of the “Kept by God” doctrine: believers’ security is established before any warning about false teachers is even introduced | See τηρέω notes throughout (vv.6, 13, 21, 24). CRITICAL framing verse for the whole letter’s “kept” theology — ಯೇಸು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಪಾಡಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ (Yēsu Kristanalli kāpāḍalpaṭṭa). |
| κλητοῖς | klētois | ”called ones” | κλητός | ”called,” “the called” | Effectual calling — being an object of God’s summons, security grounded in God’s initiative, not human achievement | REUSE (baseline) ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ, High. |
| ἔλεος…καὶ εἰρήνη καὶ ἀγάπη πληθυνθείη | eleos kai eirēnē kai agapē plēthyntheiē | ”mercy and peace and love be multiplied” | πληθύνω (passive optative) = to be multiplied, increased abundantly | ”may mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you” | A threefold epistolary blessing (distinct from the more common Pauline “grace and peace”) — foregrounds ἔλεος even in the greeting, anticipating vv.21-23 | ἔλεος = NEW — HIGH ಕರುಣೆ (see v.21 note). εἰρήνη = REUSE (baseline) ಶಾಂತಿ, Medium. ἀγάπη = NEW ಪ್ರೀತಿ (see v.21 note on bhakti-love distinction). πληθύνω = NEW, ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಲಿ (heccāgali, “may it increase/be multiplied”). Low-Medium risk. |
Jude 1:24-25 (Closing Doxology)

| τῷ δυναμένῳ φυλάξαι | tō dynamenō phylaxai | ”to him who is able to guard/keep” | φυλάσσω, near-synonym of τηρέω, emphasizing protective guarding (military/watch connotation) | “who is able to keep,” “who is able to guard” | The doxology’s climactic statement of “Kept by God”: God’s own ability (not the believer’s effort) secures final preservation — resolves the letter’s tension between divine keeping and human responsibility (v.21) in favor of God’s sufficiency | NEW — CRITICAL, paired conceptually with τηρέω but a distinct verb; propose ಕಾಪಾಡಲು ಶಕ್ತನಾಗಿರುವಾತನಿಗೆ (kāpāḍalu śaktanāgiruvātanige, “to him who is able to guard/protect”). Note: use ಶಕ್ತ/ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯವುಳ್ಳ (able, capable) for “able,” NOT ಶಕ್ತಿ as a noun standing for divine power in its own right (reserving ಶಕ್ತಿ-avoidance per the baseline’s “power_of_god” forbidden-substitution rule, since ದೇವರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ is the established rendering pattern). |
| ἀπταίστους | aptaistous | ”without stumbling” | ἄπταιστος, negated πταίω (“to stumble, trip, fail”) | “without stumbling,” “from falling” | God’s power keeps believers not merely alive but stable and unfallen to the end | NEW. ಎಡವದಂತೆ (eḍavadante). Medium risk. |
| στῆσαι κατενώπιον τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ ἀμώμους | stēsai katenōpion tēs doxēs autou amōmous | ”to set/present [you] before his glory blameless” | ἵστημι = to set, present, cause to stand; ἄμωμος = without blemish, unblemished (sacrificial-offering language, e.g. of the OT unblemished lamb) | “to present you blameless before his glory,” “to make you stand faultless in his presence” | Core statement of “Presented Blameless”: final, glorious presentation before God, achieved by God’s own action, using sacrificial-purity language applied to believers as a whole | δόξα = REUSE (baseline) ಮಹಿಮೆ, High. ἄμωμος = NEW — CRITICAL (treat with same rigor as “imputed_righteousness” in the baseline): ನಿರ್ದೋಷಿಗಳಾಗಿ (nirdoṣigaḷāgi, “blameless, faultless”). Flag: this blamelessness is God’s declarative, presentational act at the final Day — parallel to justification’s forensic declaration — NOT a moral perfection achieved through the believer’s own stage-by-stage discipline (guard against assimilation to the Lingayat shatsthala path’s progressive self-purification toward Aikya, the same concern flagged for “imputed_righteousness” in the baseline). |
| ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει | en agalliasei | ”with exultant joy” | ἀγαλλίασις = intense, overflowing joy/exultation | ”with great joy,” “with exultation” | The emotional register of the final presentation — not somber duty but joyful celebration | NEW. ಆನಂದೋತ್ಸಾಹದಿಂದ (ānandōtsāhadinda). Low risk. |
| μόνῳ θεῷ σωτῆρι ἡμῶν | monō theō sōtēri hēmōn | ”to the only God, our Savior” | μόνος = only, alone (exclusive monotheistic claim); σωτήρ = Savior, noun form of σωτηρία | ”to the only God our Savior” | Exclusive monotheism combined with God’s identity as personal Savior — the doxology’s theological anchor | θεός = REUSE (baseline) ದೇವರು, Critical. σωτήρ = NEW — CRITICAL (same tier as “salvation”): ರಕ್ಷಕ (rakṣaka), built on the same ರಕ್ಷ- root as ರಕ್ಷಣೆ, keeping the word-family visibly unified. ಏಕಮಾತ್ರ ದೇವರೂ ನಮ್ಮ ರಕ್ಷಕನೂ ಆಗಿರುವಾತನಿಗೆ (the only God, who is also our Savior). |
| διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν | dia Iēsou Christou tou kyriou hēmōn | ”through Jesus Christ our Lord” | mediatorial “through,” κύριος | ”through Jesus Christ our Lord” | All glory reaches the Father specifically and only through the mediating Lordship of Christ | κύριος = REUSE (baseline) ಕರ್ತ, Critical. Ἰησοῦς Χριστός = REUSE ಯೇಸು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ. |
| δόξα μεγαλωσύνη κράτος καὶ ἐξουσία | doxa megalōsynē kratos kai exousia | ”glory, majesty, dominion, and authority” | four-fold doxological ascription; δόξα = radiant honor; μεγαλωσύνη = majesty, greatness; κράτος = might, dominion, ruling strength (a distinct word from δύναμις, God’s saving “power” in Romans 1:16, and from ἐξουσία, delegated/rightful authority); ἐξουσία = authority, right to rule | ”glory and majesty, dominion and authority” | A climactic, fourfold ascription of praise to God’s sovereign supremacy, echoing OT doxological patterns | δόξα = REUSE (baseline) ಮಹಿಮೆ, High. μεγαλωσύνη = NEW, ಘನತೆ (ghanate, “majesty/greatness”) or ಮಹಾಮಹಿಮೆ. κράτος = NEW — HIGH: propose ಪ್ರಭುತ್ವ (prabhutva, “sovereign dominion/rule”) or ಬಲ (bala, “might”). Flag explicitly: do NOT use ಶಕ್ತಿ here, per the baseline’s forbidden-substitution rule for “power of God” (κράτος, though a distinct Greek word from δύναμις, carries the same risk of being heard as the Shakta tradition’s distinct divine-feminine power, e.g., Chamundeshwari at Mysore). ἐξουσία = NEW, ಅಧಿಕಾರ (adhikāra, “authority”), standard and low-risk. |
| πρὸ παντὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ νῦν καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας | pro pantos tou aiōnos kai nyn kai eis pantas tous aiōnas | ”before all the age/time, and now, and unto all the ages” | αἰών = age, era, long duration; here in a linear triad — before creation, in the present, forever after | ”before all time, now, and forevermore,” “before all ages and now and to all the ages” | A linear, once-for-all doxological time-sweep — from eternity past through the present to eternity future — as one unbroken line under one sovereign God | NEW — HIGH. ಸಕಲಯುಗಗಳಿಗೂ ಮುಂಚೆ, ಈಗಲೂ, ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಯುಗಗಳವರೆಗೂ (sakalayugagaḷigū munche, īgalū, ellā yugagaḷavaregū). Flag: Kannada ಯುಗ (yuga) is deeply associated with the cyclical four-yuga cosmology (Krita/Treta/Dvapara/Kali) of mainstream Hindu cosmology, which repeats without end or final consummation. This doxology’s “ages” must be read as a single, linear, non-repeating span — before creation, through history, into an unending future consummated in Christ — not a recurring cosmic wheel. This same caution is already flagged in the baseline under “fulfillment_of_prophecy”; it applies with equal force to this doxology’s closing time-language. |
| ἀμήν | amēn | ”amen, truly, so be it” | liturgical affirmation | ”amen” | Congregational affirmation of the doxology | REUSE (baseline system prompt transliteration standard) ಆಮೆನ್. Low risk. |
