Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: 2 Peter (Full Book) — Kannada Destination Language
Methodology and Citation Standard
This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every parallel to other curriculum documents (especially the baseline Romans package, and the Gospels/epistles listed in the shared curriculum tag set) found across all three chapters of 2 Peter. It extends analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md and analysis/08_core_glossary.md and must not contradict any established rendering in translation_memory.json or bible_term_registry.json.
Citation format: All Scripture references in this internal analysis document use the normalizable English style required for Phase 1 cross-referencing tooling (e.g., “Genesis 15:6,” “Romans 2:4,” “2 Peter 3:8”). This is distinct from the Kannada Bible citation convention specified in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md for Phase 2 output (e.g., ರೋಮಾಪುರದವರಿಗೆ 3:23), which remains the required format inside the actual translated text.
No chapter of 2 Peter is skipped. Chapters 1, 2, and 3 are each fully surveyed below.
Section A: Cross-Reference Matrix — Chapter 1
| 2 Peter Passage | Reference Type | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Peter 1:1 | Allusion | Equal-standing faith across peoples | Peter; Gentile believers | Romans 3:22; Romans 10:12 (“no distinction”) | Render ಸಮಾನ ಬೆಲೆಬಾಳುವ ನಂಬಿಕೆ so as to echo, not contradict, Romans’ “no distinction” language already established for universal_scope_of_gospel. Do not soften. |
| 2 Peter 1:2 | Formulaic epistolary allusion | Grace and peace | Peter (writer); cf. Paul’s convention | Romans 1:7; parallel greetings in other Pauline epistles in this curriculum set | Use ಕೃಪೆ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಂತಿ exactly as in Romans 1:7’s greeting; this is a fixed epistolary formula and must read identically across documents. |
| 2 Peter 1:3-4 | Thematic parallel (no direct citation) | Divine power, promises, escaping corruption | — | Romans 8:19-23 (creation’s “bondage to corruption,” φθορά — the same Greek word used in 2 Peter 1:4; 2:12; 2:19) | HIGH-PRIORITY consistency point: Romans 8:21 and 2 Peter both use φθορά for the condition creation/believers are delivered from. Kannada renderings (ಭ್ರಷ್ಟತೆ/ನಾಶ) should be cross-checked against however Romans 8:21 was rendered in the baseline corpus, so a learner moving between the two curricula recognizes the shared concept. |
| 2 Peter 1:5-7 | Loose parallel (no direct citation) | Growing in Christian virtue as grace-fruit | — | Galatians 5:22-23 (fruit of the Spirit, in curriculum); Romans 5:3-5 (chain: suffering→endurance→character→hope) | The virtue-chain form (adding quality to quality) echoes Romans 5:3-5’s similar chain-of-fruit structure. Translator note: both are Spirit-produced sequences flowing from grace already given, not merit ladders — keep this framing consistent across curricula. |
| 2 Peter 1:10 | Direct doctrinal parallel | Calling and election | — | Romans 8:28-30; Romans 9:11-12 | MUST reuse ಕರೆ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ verbatim per baseline divine_calling/election entries. Never ಹಣೆಬರಹ or ವಿಧಿ. |
| 2 Peter 1:12-15 | Wordplay/allusion | Christ’s death as “departure” (ἔξοδος) | Peter; (implicitly) Moses, Elijah | Luke 9:31 — at the Transfiguration itself, Moses and Elijah speak with Jesus about his “departure” (ἔξοδον, same Greek word) which he would accomplish at Jerusalem | Since Luke is in this language package’s curriculum set, ἔξοδος should be rendered with a consistent Kannada term (ನಿರ್ಗಮನ) in both 2 Peter 1:15 and Luke 9:31 wherever both are translated, preserving the deliberate literary echo between Peter’s own approaching death and Christ’s. |
| 2 Peter 1:16-18 | Historical-event citation / Typology | Transfiguration as preview of Parousia glory | Peter, James, John (implied “we”); Jesus; (Moses, Elijah implied by the Synoptic accounts, not named in 2 Peter itself) | Matthew 17:1-5; Mark 9:2-7; Luke 9:28-35 | CRITICAL cross-document consistency requirement. All three Synoptic Transfiguration accounts are in this curriculum’s document set. Every element — μεγαλειότης/mahime, the divine voice, φωνή, the mountain — must be rendered identically in 2 Peter 1:16-18 and in the three Gospel parallels. Any divergence will read as two different events to a Kannada reader moving across documents. |
| 2 Peter 1:17 | Quotation (of divine voice) | Declaration of Christ’s unique Sonship | God the Father; Jesus | Psalm 2:7 (“You are my Son… today I have begotten you”); Isaiah 42:1 (“my chosen, in whom my soul delights”) — OT roots; Matthew 3:17/17:5, Mark 1:11/9:7, Luke 3:22/9:35 — NT parallel utterances (Baptism and Transfiguration) | CRITICAL, highest-priority verbatim-consistency item in the whole cross-reference set. “ಇವನು ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಮಗನು, ಈತನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ಸಂತೋಷಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇನೆ” (or the agreed equivalent) must be worded identically at all six NT occurrences (2 Peter 1:17; Matt 3:17; Matt 17:5; Mark 1:11; Mark 9:7; Luke 3:22; Luke 9:35) wherever these differ only in this formula. Reuses baseline ದೇವರ ಮಗ (full phrase, never abbreviated) and ಪ್ರಿಯ. |
| 2 Peter 1:19 | Allusion | Reliability of the prophetic word | OT prophets (collectively) | Romans 1:2 (“the gospel… promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures”) | Reuse baseline ಪ್ರವಾದನೆ/ಪ್ರವಾದಿ family; the doctrinal claim that OT prophecy and apostolic testimony jointly and independently confirm the gospel event should read as a direct thematic sibling to Romans 1:2. |
| 2 Peter 1:19 | Allusion | Morning star / messianic hope | — | Numbers 24:17 (Balaam’s oracle: “a star shall come out of Jacob”) | Establishes an OT messianic-star background for φωσφόρος/ಉದಯ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ. Note the ironic literary link forward to chapter 2, where Balaam himself becomes the type of the corrupt false teacher (2 Peter 2:15-16) — the true messianic “star” oracle he once spoke stands in contrast to his own later greed. |
| 2 Peter 1:20-21 | Doctrinal statement (no single OT citation; applies to all OT prophecy as a category) | Inspiration of Scripture | OT prophets (collectively) | 2 Timothy 3:16 (“All Scripture is breathed out by God”) — thematic parallel, different Greek term (θεόπνευστος vs. φερόμενοι) but the same doctrine | 2 Timothy is in this curriculum’s shared document set. While the Greek terms differ, the underlying doctrine (inspiration_of_scripture) must be presented consistently: Scripture’s ultimate origin is God, not human invention, though genuine human authorship is not denied. Use ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥ consistently in both books’ inspiration passages. |
Section B: Cross-Reference Matrix — Chapter 2
| 2 Peter Passage | Reference Type | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Peter 2:1 | Thematic parallel | False teachers arising within the covenant community | — | Romans 16:17-18 (warning against those who cause divisions, “by smooth talk and flattery deceive the hearts of the naive”); Galatians (false-teacher warnings, in curriculum) | Establishes ಸುಳ್ಳು ಬೋಧಕರು as the standing Kannada category for “false teacher” doctrine across curricula; should match however Romans 16:17-18 and Galatians’ false-teacher passages render the same basic concept. |
| 2 Peter 2:4 | Allusion | Judgment of the angels who sinned | Fallen angels (unnamed) | Genesis 6:1-4 (“the sons of God… took as their wives any they chose”) — the traditional OT background for this judgment | ταρταρόω/ಅಂಧಕಾರದ ಬಂಧನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ must never be glossed with ನರಕ (see semantic analysis). Genesis 6:1-4 itself is compact and ambiguous in the Hebrew; do not import extra-biblical elaboration into the Kannada rendering of Genesis if that book is later translated — keep the connection implicit, as the Greek text itself does. |
| 2 Peter 2:5 | Allusion / Historical reference / Typology | The flood as a paradigm of certain judgment amid patient forbearance | Noah | Genesis 6:1–8:22 | Establish ನೋಹ (Nōha) as the fixed Kannada proper-name form now, for consistency with any future Genesis translation. “Herald of righteousness” (κήρυκα δικαιοσύνης) is Peter’s own characterization, not a Genesis quotation — render as a description, not as though quoting Genesis directly. Reuses ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ. |
| 2 Peter 2:5-6 | Allusion | Flood and Sodom as twin judgment-types | Noah; the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah | Genesis 6-8 (flood); Genesis 19:24-25 (Sodom and Gomorrah overthrown) | ಜಲಪ್ರಳಯ (flood) risk-note applies here as in 3:6 (see below); Sodom/Gomorrah proper names should use established Kannada Bible forms: ಸೊದೋಮ್ ಮತ್ತು ಗೊಮೋರ. |
| 2 Peter 2:7-8 | Allusion / Typology | The righteous rescued from among the ungodly | Lot | Genesis 19:1-16, 29 | Establish ಲೋತ (Lōta) as the fixed proper-name form. Typological pattern: a righteous minority preserved through divine judgment on a corrupt majority — directly supports the doctrine “False Teachers and Their Judgment” and anticipates 2 Peter 3’s final judgment. |
| 2 Peter 2:9 | Doctrinal summary drawing on 2:4-8 | Certainty of both rescue and judgment | — | Synthesizes Noah and Lot narratives above; conceptually parallel to Romans 2:6-11 (God renders to each according to their deeds; no partiality in judgment) | This verse is the structural hinge connecting chapter 2’s past judgment-examples to chapter 3’s future Day of the Lord. Kannada rendering of κρίσις/ತೀರ್ಪು here should match its use in 3:7 exactly, since the text intends the same certain future event. |
| 2 Peter 2:10-11 | Allusion (background, not direct citation) | Angelic authorities and false teachers’ presumption | Angels (“glorious ones,” δόξαι) | Background tradition also reflected in Jude 8-9 (not in current curriculum; flag for future harmonization if Jude is added) | Keep the Kannada rendering of “glorious ones” generic (ಮಹಿಮಾಪೂರ್ಣ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳು) and avoid speculative elaboration; the text itself is deliberately restrained about angelic hierarchy. |
| 2 Peter 2:15-16 | Direct historical/character citation | Balaam as the type of the greedy false teacher | Balaam; Balak; Balaam’s donkey | Numbers 22:1-35; Numbers 31:16 | Establish ಬಿಳಾಮ (Biḷāma) and ಬಾಲಾಕ್ (Bālāk) as fixed proper-name forms now, for consistency with any future Numbers translation. Note the ironic reversal from 1:19’s positive messianic “star” oracle (also spoken by Balaam, Numbers 24:17) to his own moral corruption here — worth a translator note tying the two passages together for teaching purposes. |
| 2 Peter 2:19 | Contrastive allusion (deliberate word-choice) | False freedom, true bondage to corruption | — | Romans 6:16-22 (slavery to sin vs. slavery to righteousness — the same “slave” contrast structure); Romans 8:21 (φθορά, “bondage to corruption”) | ಗುಲಾಮ (not ದಾಸ) required here per semantic analysis; note the deliberate structural parallel to Romans 6, where Paul also plays the same slavery-to-sin vs. freedom-in-Christ contrast — keep both passages’ vocabulary distinguishable in the same way (ದಾಸ for honorable Christ-belonging, ಗುಲಾಮ for shameful sin-bondage) across both curricula if Romans 6 is retranslated or referenced. |
| 2 Peter 2:21 | Allusion (concept, not quotation) | The way of righteousness abandoned | — | Proverbs (wisdom-literature “two ways” motif, e.g., Proverbs 2:13; 4:18-19 — thematic, not a direct quotation) | Reuse ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆಯ ಮಾರ್ಗ; never ಧರ್ಮಮಾರ್ಗ. |
| 2 Peter 2:22 | Direct quotation (explicit formula: “it has happened to them according to the true proverb”) | Apostasy as return to former corruption | — | Proverbs 26:11 (“Like a dog that returns to its vomit is a fool who repeats his folly”) — direct OT quotation; the second half (“a sow, after washing, returns to wallow in the mire”) is extra-biblical, paralleled in the ancient Story of Ahiqar, not Scripture | Only the first half is an actual OT quotation and should be checked against however Proverbs 26:11 is eventually rendered in Kannada, if that book enters the curriculum. The second half must be presented in translation as an accepted cultural proverb Peter cites approvingly, not as itself inspired biblical text — a subtle but real distinction for footnoting. |
Section C: Cross-Reference Matrix — Chapter 3
| 2 Peter Passage | Reference Type | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Peter 3:2 | Allusion | Joint authority of OT prophets and NT apostles | OT prophets; apostles | Romans 1:2 (prophetic promise); parallel apostolic-authority claims across the Gospels/epistles in this curriculum | Reinforces inspiration_of_scripture and fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrines already logged in the baseline; no new rendering risk beyond consistent reuse of ಪ್ರವಾದಿ and ಅಪೊಸ್ತಲ. |
| 2 Peter 3:4 | Allusion (scoffers’ claim, quoted to be refuted) | Denial of Christ’s certain return | The scoffers (unnamed) | Genesis 1:1 (implicit denial of a personal, active Creator behind “the beginning of creation”); conceptually contrasted with Romans 1:20 (God’s eternal power and nature clearly seen in creation) | The scoffers’ claim (“all things are continuing as they were”) must be rendered as a quoted, false position being refuted by Peter — not inadvertently presented as the narrator’s own voice. |
| 2 Peter 3:5-6 | Allusion | Creation and flood by the word of God | Noah (implied) | Genesis 1:6-9 (waters separated by God’s word); Genesis 6-8 (the flood) | ಜಲಪ್ರಳಯ reused from 2:5; keep the rendering of “by the word of God” (τῷ τοῦ θεοῦ λόγῳ) resonant with Genesis 1’s repeated “God said” without overlaying Puranic sṛṣṭi-vāk (creative-utterance) cosmological categories — the emphasis is a personal God’s speech-act, not an impersonal cosmic sound-principle (śabda-brahman). |
| 2 Peter 3:8 | Quotation (near-verbatim) | God’s transcendence of human time, grounding his patience | — | Psalm 90:4 (“For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night”) | HIGH-PRIORITY anchor rendering. If Psalms is ever added to this language package, Psalm 90:4 must match the wording established here. The point is God’s sovereign, personal transcendence over time in service of a real, terminating promise — never a cyclical yuga-scale timeframe (see semantic analysis note on this verse). |
| 2 Peter 3:9 | Doctrinal statement / thematic parallel | God’s patience aimed at repentance | — | Romans 2:4 (“Do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience [μακροθυμία]… God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance”) — same Greek term μακροθυμία as 2 Peter 3:9, and the same doctrinal point (patience aimed at repentance) | CRITICAL cross-document consistency requirement. Romans 2:4 and 2 Peter 3:9 use the identical Greek word μακροθυμία for God’s own patience and draw the identical conclusion (leading to repentance). The Kannada rendering (ದೀರ್ಘಶಾಂತಿ/ದೀರ್ಘಸಹನೆ) established for 2 Peter 3:9 must be checked against and harmonized with however Romans 2:4 was or will be rendered, so the “Patience of God’s Timing” doctrine reads as one coherent teaching across both books. |
| 2 Peter 3:10 | Allusion (established NT idiom + OT Day-of-the-Lord background) | Suddenness of the Day of the Lord | — | Matthew 24:43; Luke 12:39-40 (“like a thief”); 1 Thessalonians 5:2 (“the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night”) — all in this curriculum’s document set; OT background: Joel 2:1-2; Amos 5:18-20; Zephaniah 1:14-18; Isaiah 13:6; Malachi 4:1 | CRITICAL cross-document consistency requirement. Matthew, Luke, and 1 Thessalonians are all in the shared curriculum tag set. The “thief” simile (ಕಳ್ಳ) and the phrase ಕರ್ತನ ದಿನ must be rendered identically across 2 Peter 3:10, Matthew 24:43, Luke 12:39-40, and 1 Thessalonians 5:2, since these passages are intentionally describing the same event using shared idiom. |
| 2 Peter 3:13 | Quotation/Allusion (“according to his promise”) | New heavens and new earth | — | Isaiah 65:17; Isaiah 66:22 | HIGH-PRIORITY anchor rendering for ಹೊಸ ಆಕಾಶವೂ ಹೊಸ ಭೂಮಿಯೂ; must match if Isaiah is later translated in this package. Also thematically parallel to Romans 8:19-23’s hope of creation’s liberation, reinforcing the “Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption” and “Day of the Lord” doctrines as two aspects of the same redemptive-historical arc. |
| 2 Peter 3:15-16 | Direct, explicit citation | Paul’s letters recognized as Scripture | Paul (“our beloved brother”) | Direct reference to the Pauline corpus — of which Romans, the baseline curriculum for this language package, is the primary member | The single most direct textual bridge between 2 Peter and the Romans baseline. 2 Peter 3:16 explicitly places Paul’s letters within “the other Scriptures” (τὰς λοιπὰς γραφάς). Every established Romans rendering (ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ, ಕೃಪೆ, ನಂಬಿಕೆ, ರಕ್ಷಣೆ, etc.) must be presumed already-authoritative and carried forward unchanged into 2 Peter precisely because this verse asserts their shared canonical status. Do not introduce divergent renderings of shared theological vocabulary between Romans and 2 Peter. |
Section D: Messianic References Summary
| Reference | Location | OT Root | Fulfillment Claim | Kannada Handling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ”This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” | 2 Peter 1:17 | Psalm 2:7; Isaiah 42:1 | The Father’s own voice declares Christ’s unique, eternal Sonship at the Transfiguration | Reuse baseline ದೇವರ ಮಗ (full phrase); see Section A row on 1:17 for the six-way verbatim consistency requirement across the Synoptics. |
| The “morning star” | 2 Peter 1:19 | Numbers 24:17 (“a star shall come out of Jacob”) | Christ’s return/full dawning revelation in believers’ hearts | ಉದಯ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ; avoid astrological framing (ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಯ). |
| The Transfiguration itself | 2 Peter 1:16-18 | Exodus 24:15-18 (cloud, voice, Moses on the mountain); Exodus 34:29-35 (Moses’ shining face, by contrast reflected/derivative glory) | A proleptic preview of the glory Christ will display at his Parousia — grounds the “Certainty of Christ’s Return” doctrine in an already-witnessed historical event | Distinguish carefully: Moses’ face reflected borrowed glory and faded (Exodus 34); Christ’s μεγαλειότης at the Transfiguration is his own, underived, and unfading — do not let the Kannada phrasing flatten this contrast into “another shining holy man” category, which would drift toward the Sharana/Lingayat “realized teacher” risk already flagged for incarnation and deity_of_christ in the baseline. |
| ”Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (throughout, esp. 1:1, 11; 2:20; 3:2, 18) | passim | Fulfills the OT expectation of Yahweh as sole Savior (e.g., Isaiah 43:11, “I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior”) | Christ is identified with the OT’s exclusive divine Savior-identity | ರಕ್ಷಕ tied transparently to baseline ರಕ್ಷಣೆ; never permit a reading in which Jesus is merely a savior among several deliverer-figures. |
Section E: Typology Table
| Type (OT Pattern) | Antitype / Application in 2 Peter | Doctrine Supported | Kannada Handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Flood (Genesis 6-8) | Certain future judgment by fire (2 Peter 3:5-7) | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | ಜಲಪ್ರಳಯ (flood, past) vs. ಬೆಂಕಿ/ಮೂಲಧಾತುಗಳು (fire, future) — same typological logic (past water-judgment guarantees future fire-judgment) must be visibly parallel in the Kannada text, while avoiding praḷaya-cycle framing for either. |
| Noah, “herald of righteousness,” preserved through judgment (2 Peter 2:5) | The godly preserved through coming judgment (2 Peter 2:9) | False Teachers and Their Judgment; Day of the Lord | Reuse ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ; Noah is a positive type of rescued righteousness, not an independent religious hero-figure to be venerated in his own right. |
| Lot rescued from Sodom (Genesis 19) | The godly rescued from among the ungodly (2 Peter 2:7-9) | False Teachers and Their Judgment | Establish ಲೋತ; typology of minority-righteous-rescue reinforces universal_human_accountability-adjacent teaching that judgment is real and impartial, while rescue is by grace, not merit. |
| Balaam, a prophet corrupted by greed (Numbers 22-24, 31) | The false teachers’ greed-driven abandonment of “the way of righteousness” (2 Peter 2:15-16) | False Teachers and Their Judgment | ಬಿಳಾಮ; note the irony that the same man who spoke Numbers 24:17’s messianic star-oracle (echoed positively in 2 Peter 1:19) later became the paradigm of corrupted prophetic office — a strong internal teaching link within 2 Peter itself. |
| Angels who sinned, confined awaiting judgment (2 Peter 2:4, alluding to Genesis 6:1-4) | Certainty of final judgment on all rebellion, however exalted the rebel | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | ಅಂಧಕಾರದ ಬಂಧನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ; never ನರಕ (see Section B). |
| Moses’ derivative, fading glory (Exodus 34:29-35) | Christ’s own, underived, unfading glory revealed at the Transfiguration (2 Peter 1:16-18) | Certainty of Christ’s Return; Deity of Christ | See Section D above. |
Section F: Parallels to Other Curricula in This Language Package (Especially Romans)
| 2 Peter Theme/Term | Romans (or other curriculum) Parallel | Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Righteousness (δικαιοσύνη) — 1:1; 2:21; 3:13 | Romans 1:17; 3:21-26; 4:1-25 (baseline righteousness, Critical) | Reuse ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ exactly; never ಧರ್ಮ, in every 2 Peter occurrence. |
| Equal-standing faith, no distinction — 1:1 | Romans 3:22; 10:12 (universal_scope_of_gospel, unity_of_jews_and_gentiles) | Do not soften “equal standing” (ἰσότιμος) — it is the same doctrinal claim as Romans’ “no distinction,” applied to apostolic-generation vs. later believers rather than Jew vs. Gentile, but with identical theological force. |
| Corruption / φθορά — 1:4; 2:12, 19 | Romans 8:19-23 (creation’s “bondage to corruption”) | Same Greek word; harmonize Kannada rendering register across both books so the shared theological concept (divine_nature_and_escaping_corruption, extending baseline sanctification) is visible to a learner reading both curricula. |
| Calling and election — 1:10 | Romans 8:28-30; 9:11-12 (divine_calling, election, effectual_calling) | Reuse ಕರೆ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ verbatim. |
| Patience of God (μακροθυμία) — 3:9 | Romans 2:4 (same Greek word, same doctrinal point: God’s patience leads to repentance) | See Section C row on 3:9. Treat as the single strongest lexical bridge between 2 Peter and Romans on this doctrine. |
| Day of the Lord / final judgment — 3:7, 10 | Romans 2:5-16 (“day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God”; no partiality in judgment) | Harmonize κρίσις/κρίμα renderings (ತೀರ್ಪು/ನ್ಯಾಯತೀರ್ಪು) with however Romans 2:5-16 was rendered for “day of wrath” and impartial judgment. |
| False teachers — ch. 2 | Romans 16:17-18 (warning against those who cause divisions and deceive the naive) | Reuse ಸುಳ್ಳು ಬೋಧಕರು consistently; both passages address gospel-counterfeit teaching, not rival-tradition teachers as such. |
| Spiritual growth / fruit-bearing — 1:5-8 | Romans 12:6-8 (spiritual gifts); Galatians 5:22-23 (fruit of the Spirit, in curriculum) | Keep the shared “grace-fruit, not merit-ladder” framing consistent across all three lists. |
| Slavery to sin vs. Christ’s ownership — 1:1 (positive ದಾಸ) vs. 2:19 (negative ಗುಲಾಮ) | Romans 6:16-22 (same slave-to-sin vs. slave-to-righteousness contrast structure) | Preserve the same two-term lexical distinction (ದಾಸ / ಗುಲಾಮ) if Romans 6 vocabulary is ever revisited, so the deliberate biblical wordplay is not flattened into a single Kannada word. |
| Sonship of Christ declared — 1:17 (Transfiguration voice) | Romans 1:3-4 (Sonship “declared… by his resurrection from the dead”) | Two distinct historical events (Transfiguration, Resurrection) both function in their respective books as public divine confirmations of Christ’s eternal Sonship — reuse ದೇವರ ಮಗ identically in both; do not let one text’s “declaration” language imply Sonship began at that moment. |
| ”Day of the Lord… like a thief” — 3:10 | Matthew 24:43; Luke 12:39-40; 1 Thessalonians 5:2 (shared curriculum documents) | See Section C row on 3:10 — mandatory identical rendering across all four passages. |
| Inspiration of Scripture — 1:20-21 | 2 Timothy 3:16 (shared curriculum document) | Harmonize the underlying doctrine (inspiration_of_scripture) even though the specific Greek terms differ; both must use ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥ for “Scripture.” |
| Paul’s letters as Scripture — 3:15-16 | The entire Romans baseline package | See Section C row on 3:15-16 — the explicit textual warrant for carrying every established Romans rendering into 2 Peter unchanged. |
Section G: Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations (Consolidated)
- The divine Sonship declaration (“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased”) must be worded identically at 2 Peter 1:17; Matthew 3:17; Matthew 17:5; Mark 1:11; Mark 9:7; Luke 3:22; Luke 9:35.
- “Like a thief” / Day of the Lord suddenness must be worded identically at 2 Peter 3:10; Matthew 24:43; Luke 12:39-40; 1 Thessalonians 5:2.
- μακροθυμία (God’s patience) at 2 Peter 3:9 must be harmonized with Romans 2:4’s rendering of the same Greek word; both must use the ದೀರ್ಘಶಾಂತಿ/ದೀರ್ಘಸಹನೆ register, kept lexically distinct from ὑπομονή/ತಾಳ್ಮೆ (human endurance, 2 Peter 1:6).
- φθορά (corruption) at 2 Peter 1:4; 2:12; 2:19 must be harmonized with Romans 8:21’s use of the same word.
- γραφή/γραφαί (Scripture) at 2 Peter 1:20 and 3:16 must use ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥ(ಗಳು) consistently with however “Scripture” is rendered in 2 Timothy 3:16 and throughout the Romans baseline.
- Psalm 90:4 (“a thousand years as one day”), echoed at 2 Peter 3:8, establishes the anchor Kannada rendering for this verse should Psalms later enter the curriculum.
- Isaiah 65:17/66:22 (“new heavens and new earth”), echoed at 2 Peter 3:13, establishes the anchor Kannada rendering should Isaiah later enter the curriculum.
- Proper names: ನೋಹ (Noah), ಲೋತ (Lot), ಸೊದೋಮ್ ಮತ್ತು ಗೊಮೋರ (Sodom and Gomorrah), ಬಿಳಾಮ (Balaam), ಬಾಲಾಕ್ (Balak) are hereby fixed as the standard Kannada Bible forms for this language package, for consistency with any future Genesis/Numbers translation.
- Righteousness, faith, grace, salvation, Lord, Holy Spirit, Son of God and all other baseline-established terms retain their exact Romans-package renderings throughout 2 Peter without exception, per Section F above.
- Never let any typological/cosmological term in 2 Peter 2-3 (flood, fire, creation, Tartarus, Day of the Lord) drift toward Hindu cyclical-cosmology vocabulary (ಪ್ರಳಯ as recurring dissolution, ನರಕ as temporary karma-driven hell, ಯುಗ-scale time) — every such term carries a mandatory translator note per
07_semantic_analysis.md.
