Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis: Philippians (English → Kannada)
Methodology and Baseline Continuity
This analysis extends the Romans Language Package baseline. Every term already fixed in the Romans translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json (e.g., ಕೃಪೆ for grace, ನಂಬಿಕೆ for faith, ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ for righteousness, ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ for gospel, ಕರ್ತ for Lord, ರಕ್ಷಣೆ for salvation, ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ for resurrection, ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರು for saints, ಮಹಿಮೆ for glory, ದೇವರು for God, ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ for Holy Spirit, ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ for law, ಕರೆ/ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ for calling/called, ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ for fellowship) is reused exactly and is not re-litigated below except where Philippians introduces a new nuance or a new syncretism risk not documented in Romans.
Philippians introduces a distinct cluster of risks because of its vocabulary of self-emptying (κένωσις), joy (χαρά), citizenship (πολίτευμα), contentment (αὐτάρκεια), bonds/imprisonment (δεσμά), and knowledge of Christ (γνῶσις) — several of which are false friends: Kannada words already carry precise, technical meaning within Advaita Vedanta, Yoga philosophy, and Haridasa/Lingayat devotional traditions. These are flagged with the same Critical/High/Medium/Low tiering used in the Romans baseline.
CORE PASSAGE: Philippians 2:1-11 (Verse-by-Verse)
Philippians 2:1
εἴ τις (ei tis) — “if any/if there is” — rhetorical conditional, not doubt. Low risk.
παράκλησις (paraklēsis)
- Literal meaning: a calling-alongside; comfort, exhortation, appeal
- Semantic range: encouragement, consolation, urgent appeal
- English variants: “encouragement” (ESV/NIV), “consolation” (KJV)
- Contextual theological meaning: the shared comfort believers have “in Christ,” grounding the appeal to unity that follows
- Destination rendering: ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹ / ಆದರಣೆ (prōtsāha / ādaraṇe). Risk: Low. ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸುವುದು already established in Romans baseline (exhort); reuse compatible root.
παραμύθιον ἀγάπης (paramythion agapēs)
- Literal meaning: comfort/solace of love
- Semantic range: consoling encouragement rooted in love
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s love as the ground of comfort among believers
- Destination rendering: ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಸಾಂತ್ವನ (prītiya sāntvana). Risk: Low.
κοινωνία πνεύματος (koinōnia pneumatos)
- Literal meaning: fellowship/sharing of the Spirit
- Semantic range: joint participation, partnership, communion
- Contextual theological meaning: the Holy Spirit as the shared bond uniting believers (not merely social camaraderie)
- Destination rendering: ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮನ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ (Pavitrātmana anyōnyate). Risk: Medium. ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ is the Romans-established rendering for κοινωνία; reused exactly. Must not be reduced to a merely social meaning (ಸ್ನೇಹ, rejected in Romans baseline).
σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί (splanchna kai oiktirmoi)
- Literal meaning: “bowels/inward parts and pities” (Hebraic idiom for the seat of deep emotion)
- Semantic range: tender affection, compassion, mercy
- Contextual theological meaning: the deep, gut-level compassion that should mark believers, mirroring God’s own compassion
- Destination rendering: ಮಮತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕರುಣೆ (mamate mattu karuṇe). Risk: Low-Medium. Avoid rendering with a term that reduces this to polite courtesy; must retain visceral warmth.
Philippians 2:2
τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε (to auto phronēte) / φρονέω (phroneō)
- Literal meaning: to think, to set one’s mind/attitude on
- Semantic range: not mere intellectual opinion but a settled disposition, outlook, or orientation of the whole person — the key recurring verb of Philippians (occurs 10x: 1:7; 2:2 [x2]; 2:5; 3:15 [x2]; 3:19; 4:2 [x2]; 4:10)
- English variants: “be of the same mind” (ESV), “having the same attitude” (some paraphrases), “let this mind be in you” (KJV, 2:5)
- Contextual theological meaning: a shared, Christ-shaped disposition that produces unity; in 2:5 it introduces the hymn as an ethical pattern to be adopted, not merely admired
- Destination rendering: ಒಂದೇ ಮನಸ್ಸುಳ್ಳವರಾಗಿರಿ / ಮನೋಭಾವವುಳ್ಳವರಾಗಿ (ondē manassuḷḷavarāgiri / manōbhāvavuḷḷavarāgi — “having the same mind/disposition”). Risk: Medium. Must consistently render this recurring verb with cognate Kannada vocabulary (ಮನಸ್ಸು/ಮನೋಭಾವ family) across all seven occurrences for the reader to notice the pattern Paul is building.
σύμψυχοι (sympsychoi) — “united in soul” — ಒಂದೇ ಆತ್ಮದವರಾಗಿ. Risk: Low-Medium. Do not render ψυχή here with the Vedantic ātman concept; this is ordinary “soul/self” in the sense of shared disposition, not the metaphysical Self.
Philippians 2:3
ἐριθεία (eritheia)
- Literal meaning: selfish ambition, factional self-seeking (originally “hired labor for wages,” extended to partisan self-interest)
- Semantic range: rivalry, selfish ambition, faction-building
- Contextual theological meaning: the opposite disposition to the unity Paul calls for
- Destination rendering: ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥ ಮಹತ್ವಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆ (svārtha mahatvākāṅkṣe). Risk: Medium.
κενοδοξία (kenodoxia)
- Literal meaning: empty glory/vain conceit (κενός “empty” + δόξα “glory/opinion”)
- Semantic range: vainglory, conceit, empty self-display
- Contextual theological meaning: pride that seeks empty honor rather than God’s glory (ironically prefiguring Christ’s true κένωσις in v.7)
- Destination rendering: ವ್ಯರ್ಥ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ / ಡಂಭ (vyartha hemme / ḍambha). Risk: Medium. Must not reuse ಮಹಿಮೆ (established as God’s true “glory,” Romans baseline) for this counterfeit, empty glory — the contrast between empty δόξα here and Christ’s genuine restored δόξα/honor in 2:9-11 is a deliberate literary inversion worth preserving distinctly.
ταπεινοφροσύνη (tapeinophrosynē)
- Literal meaning: lowliness of mind, humility (ταπεινός “low/humble” + φρήν “mind”)
- Semantic range: humility, modesty, lowly-mindedness — in Hellenistic usage outside Jewish/Christian sources often a term of contempt (servility); the NT elevates it as a virtue
- Contextual theological meaning: the Christlike disposition of considering others’ interests above one’s own, grounded in Christ’s own humbling (v.8)
- Destination rendering: ದೀನಭಾವ / ದೀನತೆ (dīnabhāva / dīnate). Risk: High. ದೀನ carries strong Kannada connotations of social/economic lowliness (“the poor and lowly,” a caste- and class-marked term in everyday usage), and in ascetic contexts can suggest self-mortification pursued as spiritual merit (tapasya). Gospel humility must be taught as a voluntary, others-oriented moral disposition modeled on Christ’s own choice, not a social-status marker or merit-earning austerity. Translator note required at first occurrence (2:3) and reinforced at 2:8.
ὑπερέχοντας ἑαυτῶν (hyperechontas heautōn) — “surpassing/exceeding themselves,” i.e. considering others better than oneself. ಇತರರನ್ನು ತಮಗಿಂತ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠರೆಂದು ಎಣಿಸುವುದು. Risk: Low.
Philippians 2:4
σκοποῦντες (skopountes) — “looking to, considering” (from σκοπός, “goal/mark” — the same root recurs at 3:14). ಗಮನಿಸುತ್ತಾ. Risk: Low.
Philippians 2:5
τοῦτο φρονεῖτε ἐν ὑμῖν ὃ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ (touto phroneite en hymin ho kai en Christō Iēsou)
- Literal meaning: “have this mind/disposition among/in you which was also in Christ Jesus”
- Contextual theological meaning: introduces the Christ-hymn (2:6-11) as the paradigm for the church’s unity and humility, not merely as a Christological statement in isolation
- Destination rendering: continues the φρονέω family established at 2:2; ನಿಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಮನೋಭಾವವಿರಲಿ, ಅದು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ ಯೇಸುವಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಇತ್ತು. Risk: Medium (see 2:2 note on consistency).
Philippians 2:6
ἐν μορφῇ θεοῦ ὑπάρχων (en morphē theou hyparchōn)
- μορφή (morphē) — Literal meaning: form, outward expression that corresponds to and reveals inner essence/nature (distinct from σχῆμα, “outward appearance,” used later in v.7)
- Semantic range: the essential, defining form/nature of a thing, as genuinely possessed, not merely simulated
- English variants: “form of God” (KJV/ESV), “nature of God” (NIV, interpretive)
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s pre-existent, essential possession of the divine nature — the foundation of the Deity of Christ doctrine already established in the Romans baseline
- Destination rendering: ದೇವರ ಸ್ವರೂಪ (Dēvara svarūpa). Risk: Critical. ಸ್ವರೂಪ (“essential form”) is the correct Kannada term for “form that reveals inner essence,” but in Hindu devotional usage a deity’s svarūpa is one of several revealed forms (a deity may take multiple svarūpas/avatars). The translator note must clarify: Christ eternally possesses the one essential divine nature; this is not one revealed form among several possible manifestations of a deity, and Christ does not cycle between forms. Cross-reference the Romans baseline’s ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ (incarnation, never ಅವತಾರ) doctrine note.
οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο (ouch harpagmon hēgēsato)
- ἁρπαγμός (harpagmos) — Literal meaning: a seizing, a thing forcibly grasped or plundered (from ἁρπάζω, “to snatch/seize”)
- Semantic range: famously ambiguous — (a) “a thing to be grasped at/seized” (something not yet possessed, to be exploited for advantage), or (b) “a thing to be held onto/clung to” (something already possessed, but not tenaciously retained)
- English variants: “thought it not robbery” (KJV), “did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage” (NIV), “did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped” (ESV)
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ, possessing true equality with God, did not treat that status as leverage to be exploited for self-advantage, but instead chose self-emptying service — the theological hinge of the whole hymn
- Destination rendering: ದೋಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳತಕ್ಕ ವಿಷಯವೆಂದು ಎಣಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ (“did not consider [it] a thing to be seized/exploited”). Risk: High. Requires a translator note preserving the exegetical nuance (Christ already possessed equality; he refused to use it for self-advantage) rather than suggesting he lacked and grasped for it.
τὸ εἶναι ἴσα θεῷ (to einai isa theō) — “being equal with God.” ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸಮಾನನಾಗಿರುವುದು. Risk: Critical (Deity of Christ doctrine, already established in Romans baseline framework — reuse same review routing).
Philippians 2:7
ἀλλὰ ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν (alla heauton ekenōsen)
- κενόω (kenoō) — Literal meaning: to empty, to make void/of no effect (root of “kenosis”)
- Semantic range: to empty oneself, to divest oneself of status/privilege, to make of no reputation
- English variants: “made himself of no reputation” (KJV), “emptied himself” (ESV), “made himself nothing” (NIV)
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s voluntary self-emptying is not a subtraction of his divine nature (he does not stop being God) but a laying aside of the outward privileges and glory of that status in order to take on genuine humanity and servanthood — the central term of the Incarnation and Self-Emptying doctrine
- Destination rendering: ತನ್ನನ್ನು ತಾನೇ ಬರಿದುಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡನು (tannannu tānē baridumāḍikoṇḍanu — “he himself made himself empty/void [of status]”). Risk: Critical. Deliberately avoid any Kannada rendering built on ಶೂನ್ಯ (śūnya, “void/emptiness”), which carries the specific philosophical weight of Buddhist śūnyatā and Advaitic negation of independent selfhood — using it could suggest Christ’s being was annihilated or dissolved. ಬರಿದು (“empty,” as of a container being emptied of contents while the container itself remains) is the safer, standard Kannada Bible choice: it names a voluntary emptying of status/privilege while the divine nature and personal identity remain fully intact. Mandatory translator note at this verse.
μορφὴν δούλου λαβών (morphēn doulou labōn)
- δοῦλος (doulos) — Literal meaning: slave, bondservant (one owned by and unconditionally obligated to a master, distinct from a hired worker)
- Semantic range: slave, servant, bondservant; in Pauline usage also a positive self-designation (“servant of Christ Jesus,” cf. 1:1)
- Contextual theological meaning: the eternal Son genuinely takes on not merely human weakness but the lowest social status available — a slave’s form — as the concrete expression of his self-emptying
- Destination rendering: ದಾಸನ ಸ್ವರೂಪ (dāsana svarūpa, “the form of a servant/slave”). Risk: Critical. ದಾಸ is the central self-designation of Karnataka’s coastal and inland Haridasa bhakti tradition (Purandara Dāsa, Kanaka Dāsa) — there, “dāsa” names the devotee’s own chosen posture of submission toward a personal chosen deity (Krishna/Vishnu), an identity a worshiper adopts. Here the direction is reversed and unrepeatable: it is God the Son himself who assumes servant-status for us, once, in the incarnation — not a devotee ascending toward or declaring devotion to a deity. Distinguish carefully in the translator note from the Haridasa devotional “dāsa” identity, and note the same term (ದಾಸ) will recur in Phil 1:1 for Paul’s self-description as “a servant of Christ Jesus” — there it functions in the ordinary Pauline sense of committed bond-service, not the Haridasa devotional title, though the surface-form overlap raises a real risk of assimilation.
ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος (en homoiōmati anthrōpōn genomenos)
- ὁμοίωμα (homoiōma) — Literal meaning: likeness, resemblance
- Contextual theological meaning: genuine, real human likeness (not illusory appearance/docetism) — affirms full Humanity of Christ
- Destination rendering: ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆದನು. Risk: High. Must not be softened toward “merely appeared human”; full historical humanity is asserted (parallels Romans baseline’s “Humanity of Christ” doctrine entry, seed_of_david/flesh terms).
Philippians 2:8
σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος (schēmati heuretheis hōs anthrōpos)
- σχῆμα (schēma) — Literal meaning: outward fashion, appearance, mode
- Semantic range: external form as perceived, in contrast to μορφή’s essential form
- Contextual theological meaning: in his outward manner of life, Christ was found genuinely as a man — completes the “very God / very man” balance of vv.6-7
- Destination rendering: ಆಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಂತೆ ಕಂಡುಬಂದನು. Risk: Medium.
ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν (etapeinōsen heauton)
- ταπεινόω (tapeinoō) — Literal meaning: to make low, to humble
- Contextual theological meaning: Christ’s second, deeper self-humbling — from servant-form to obedient death — the moral pattern for the church’s own ταπεινοφροσύνη (2:3)
- Destination rendering: ತನ್ನನ್ನು ತಾನೇ ತಗ್ಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡನು. Risk: High (see 2:3 note — same caution against reading as social-status shame or merit-earning austerity; this is a Christological act of voluntary obedience, the ground of the church’s ethical imitation, not a devotional discipline believers perform to earn standing).
γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου (genomenos hypēkoos mechri thanatou), θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ (thanatou de staurou)
- ὑπήκοος (hypēkoos) — obedient. σταυρός (stauros) — cross, specifically the Roman instrument of execution reserved for the lowest criminals and slaves
- Contextual theological meaning: obedience “unto death, even death on a cross” underscores the depth and shame of Christ’s humbling — total obedience to the Father’s will, to the point of the most degrading death available
- Destination rendering: ಮರಣದ ವರೆಗೂ, ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಮರಣದ ವರೆಗೂ ವಿಧೇಯನಾದನು. Risk: High. ಶಿಲುಬೆ (cross) is the established Kannada Christian term; ensure the historical, once-for-all, shameful-death sense is retained, not abstracted into a general symbol of suffering/renunciation comparable to ascetic self-denial.
Philippians 2:9
διὸ καὶ ὁ θεὸς αὐτὸν ὑπερύψωσεν (dio kai ho theos auton hyperypsōsen)
- ὑπερυψόω (hyperypsoō) — Literal meaning: to super-exalt, to raise to the highest possible degree (ὑπέρ “above” + ὑψόω “to raise/exalt”)
- Contextual theological meaning: God’s response to Christ’s self-humbling is total exaltation — the resurrection/ascension/enthronement pattern; grounds the confession of Lordship in vv.10-11
- Destination rendering: ದೇವರು ಆತನನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯುನ್ನತಕ್ಕೆ ಏರಿಸಿದನು (“God raised/exalted him to the highest place”). Risk: High. Must retain the “highest of all” absoluteness; do not soften to “greatly honored.”
τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα (to onoma to hyper pan onoma) — “the name above every name.” ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾದ ಹೆಸರು. Risk: Critical (feeds directly into the Lordship of Christ confession, vv.10-11).
Philippians 2:10
ἵνα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ (hina en tō onomati Iēsou pan gony kampsē) — “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” ಯೇಸುವಿನ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಮೊಣಕಾಲು ಬಾಗಬೇಕು. Risk: Critical. Universal, cosmic homage — consistent with the Romans baseline’s “Universal Scope of the Gospel” doctrine; must not be qualified or softened.
ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων (epouraniōn kai epigeiōn kai katachthoniōn)
- Literal meaning: “of heavenly [beings], of earthly [beings], and of those under the earth”
- Semantic range: a merism for the totality of creation — every rank of being everywhere
- Contextual theological meaning: total, cosmic submission to Christ’s lordship
- Destination rendering: ಪರಲೋಕದವರೂ ಭೂಲೋಕದವರೂ ಪಾತಾಳದವರೂ. Risk: Medium. ಪಾತಾಳ (pātāḷa) is the specific term for the Puranic netherworld (one of the seven lower worlds inhabited by nāgas/asuras in Hindu cosmology). Standard in existing Kannada Bible usage for “under the earth,” but a translator note should clarify that this merism names the comprehensive scope of Christ’s authority over all realms of created being, not an endorsement of Puranic cosmological geography.
Philippians 2:11
καὶ πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός (kai pasa glōssa exomologēsētai hoti Kyrios Iēsous Christos)
- ἐξομολογέομαι (exomologeomai) — Literal meaning: to confess openly, acknowledge publicly
- Κύριος (Kyrios) — already established in Romans baseline as ಕರ್ತ; reused exactly here
- Contextual theological meaning: this is the same confession named as the salvation confession in Romans 10:9 (“Jesus is Lord,” ಯೇಸು ಕರ್ತನಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ) — Philippians 2:11 supplies its cosmic, eschatological horizon (every tongue, not just the believing tongue) while Romans 10:9 supplies its personal, salvific horizon
- Destination rendering: ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ನಾಲಿಗೆಯೂ ಯೇಸು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನು ಕರ್ತನೆಂದು ಅರಿಕೆ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು. Risk: Critical. Must use ಕರ್ತ (never ಸ್ವಾಮಿ, per Romans baseline) and must not present this as one confession among possible others — this is the exclusive, universal confession.
εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ πατρός (eis doxan theou patros) — “to the glory of God the Father.” Reuses established ಮಹಿಮೆ (glory) and ತಂದೆ (Father). Risk: High (established terms, reused exactly).
Chapter 1
Chapter 1 introduces the epistolary frame and several terms not yet fixed in the Romans baseline.
δοῦλοι (douloi, 1:1) — Paul and Timothy as “servants/slaves of Christ Jesus.” See full discussion under 2:7 above (ದಾಸ). Risk: Critical. Establishes Paul’s own self-identity as ದಾಸ before the term recurs Christologically in 2:7 — the ordering (human servant first, then the Son’s servant-form) should be preserved so readers meet the ordinary sense before the Christological one.
ἐπίσκοποι (episkopoi, 1:1) — overseers/bishops (ἐπί “over” + σκοπέω “to watch/oversee”). Destination: ಸಭಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರು / ಮೇಲ್ವಿಚಾರಕರು. Risk: Medium. A local-church governance office; must not be assimilated to a temple priesthood role or a Lingayat jaṅgama teacher-office (already flagged in the Romans baseline apostle entry).
διάκονοι (diakonoi, 1:1) — deacons, servant-ministers. Destination: ಶುಶ್ರೂಷಕರು. Risk: Medium. Distinguish from generic social service; a recognized church ministry office.
ἅγιοι (hagioi, 1:1) — reuses Romans baseline ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರು exactly (saints). Risk: High (per baseline).
κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον (koinōnia eis to euangelion, 1:5)
- Literal meaning: partnership/fellowship “unto” (directed toward, invested in) the gospel
- Semantic range: financial and practical partnership as well as spiritual fellowship — the Philippians’ sustained material support of Paul’s ministry (cf. 4:15-16) is itself called κοινωνία
- Contextual theological meaning: the Partnership in the Gospel doctrine — a shared, active investment in gospel advance, not passive spiritual solidarity alone
- Destination rendering: ಸುವಾರ್ತೆಯ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆ (extending the established ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ base with an explicit “participation in the gospel” phrase where the financial/practical partnership sense is in view). Risk: Medium. Use ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ alone where the sense is general fellowship; use the fuller phrase where Paul specifically means shared gospel labor/giving (1:5; 4:14-15).
φρονεῖν (phronein, 1:7) — first occurrence of the recurring φρονέω verb (see 2:2 discussion). Destination: consistent ಮನೋಭಾವ/ಮನಸ್ಸು family. Risk: Medium.
ἀγάπη, ἐπίγνωσις, αἴσθησις (agapē, epignōsis, aisthēsis, 1:9) — love, full/discerning knowledge, moral perception. Destination: ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಪೂರ್ಣ ಜ್ಞಾನ, ವಿವೇಚನೆ. Risk: Medium — see caution on ಜ್ಞಾನ under Chapter 3 (γνῶσις Χριστοῦ); here it is qualified by ἐν as growing “in” love, reducing (but not eliminating) the same risk.
καρπὸν δικαιοσύνης (karpon dikaiosynēs, 1:11) — “fruit of righteousness.” Reuses established ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ exactly. Risk: Critical (per baseline).
προκοπή (prokopē, 1:12,25) — progress, advancement. Destination: ಪ್ರಗತಿ. Risk: Low.
δεσμά / δεσμοί (desma/desmoi, 1:7,13,14,17)
- Literal meaning: bonds, chains, fetters; by extension, imprisonment
- Semantic range: literal Roman imprisonment/chains; figuratively, any binding constraint
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul’s literal Roman imprisonment, which he reframes as having “actually served to advance the gospel” (1:12) — the ground of the Joy in Suffering doctrine
- Destination rendering: ಬಂಧನ / ಸಂಕೋಲೆ (bandhana / saṅkōle). Risk: Critical. ಬಂಧನ is also the standard Kannada philosophical/Vedantic term for the soul’s bondage to saṃsāra (the cycle of rebirth), the very condition from which mokṣa/mukti liberates — a term already flagged as forbidden for “salvation” in the Romans baseline. Using ಬಂಧನ for Paul’s literal prison chains risks the reader hearing an echo of that metaphysical bondage-and-liberation framework. A translator note must clarify: this is Paul’s literal, historical Roman imprisonment endured for the gospel’s sake, not a symbol of the soul’s metaphysical bondage to matter/karma. Where possible, favor the more concrete ಸಂಕೋಲೆ (“chains/fetters,” more literal/physical) over the more abstract ಬಂಧನ to reduce this risk, especially in narrative (not doctrinal-discourse) contexts.
εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion, 1:5,7,12,16,17,27) / κηρύσσειν (kēryssein, 1:15) / χαίρω (chairō, 1:18) — gospel reuses established ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ; “preach” reuses ordinary ಪ್ರಸಾರ ಮಾಡು/ಸಾರು vocabulary. See Joy discussion below for χαίρω.
χαίρω / χαρά (chairō/chara, 1:4,18,25; and pervasively through the letter — 2:2,17,18,28,29; 3:1; 4:1,4,10)
- Literal meaning: to rejoice; joy
- Semantic range: gladness, delight, joy — a disposition, not merely an emotion of the moment
- English variants: “joy,” “rejoice,” “gladness”
- Contextual theological meaning: Philippians’ defining tone — joy that persists through and even because of suffering and imprisonment (Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment doctrine), grounded in Christ and gospel advance rather than circumstance
- Destination rendering: ಸಂತೋಷ / ಸಂತೋಷಿಸು (santōṣa / santōṣisu). Risk: High. Kannada has a ready alternative, ಆನಂದ (ānanda), which must be avoided as the primary rendering: ಆನಂದ is the technical term for the impersonal, ultimate bliss of Brahman-realization in Advaita Vedanta (the “-ānanda” of Sat-Chit-Ānanda), the culminating experiential state of mokṣa. Paul’s joy is a relational, circumstance-independent but person-directed gladness “in the Lord” (ἐν κυρίῳ, 3:1; 4:4,10) — not an impersonal metaphysical bliss attained through self-realization. ಸಂತೋಷ is the safer established Kannada Christian rendering and should be used consistently across all occurrences in the letter.
παρρησία (parrēsia, 1:20) — boldness, confidence of speech. ಧೈರ್ಯ / ಎದೆಗಾರಿಕೆ. Risk: Low.
τὸ ζῆν Χριστός καὶ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν κέρδος (to zēn Christos kai to apothanein kerdos, 1:21) — “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” ಬದುಕುವುದು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನೇ, ಸಾಯುವುದು ಲಾಭವೇ. Risk: High. This life-orientation statement must not be read through a renunciant framework where death is escape from an undesirable body/world (as in ascetic traditions seeking release from embodiment); Paul’s “gain” is closer union with Christ (1:23), a relational gain, not liberation from personhood or embodiment as such.
πολιτεύεσθε (politeuesthe, 1:27)
- Literal meaning: “conduct yourselves as citizens” (πολιτεύομαι, cognate with πολίτευμα at 3:20)
- Contextual theological meaning: introduces the Citizenship in Heaven doctrine already in ch.1, calling the Philippian believers (residents of a Roman colony proud of its citizenship status) to a “citizenship” whose ultimate reference point is the gospel/heaven
- Destination rendering: ಯೋಗ್ಯರಾಗಿ ನಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿರಿ / ಪೌರರಂತೆ ನಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿರಿ. Risk: High. See full discussion under 3:20 πολίτευμα.
ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι, μιᾷ ψυχῇ συναθλοῦντες (en heni pneumati, mia psychē synathlountes, 1:27) — “in one spirit, with one soul striving together.” ಒಂದೇ ಆತ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ, ಒಂದೇ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಹೋರಾಡುತ್ತಾ. Risk: Medium — introduces the Unity theme continued into ch.2.
ἀγών (agōn, 1:30) — conflict, struggle (athletic/agonistic metaphor, recurs at 4:3 συνήθλησαν). ಹೋರಾಟ. Risk: Low.
Chapter 2 (2:12-30; vv.1-11 treated above as the core passage)
κατεργάζεσθε τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν (katergazesthe tēn heautōn sōtērian, 2:12)
- Literal meaning: “work out your own salvation”
- Contextual theological meaning: σωτηρία reuses established ರಕ್ಷಣೆ exactly. The verb κατεργάζομαι (“work out, bring to full effect”) must be carefully distinguished from “work for/earn”: v.13 immediately grounds this working-out in God’s own prior working-in (“θεὸς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἐνεργῶν ἐν ὑμῖν”), preserving the grace-priority already fixed in the Romans baseline (grace vs. merit)
- Destination rendering: ನಿಮ್ಮ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಸಾಧಿಸಿರಿ (with the working-out grounded in v.13’s ದೇವರೇ ನಿಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಡಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ, “for God is the one working in you”). Risk: Critical. Same escalation tier as any grace/merit-contrast passage per the Romans baseline’s escalation rules (Romans 4:4-5, 11:5-6 pattern) — must include a translator note that this is Spirit-empowered outworking of a salvation already secured, not self-effort earning salvation, to avoid assimilation to a karma-merit or kayaka-dasoha (disciplined-work-as-standing) framework.
φόβου καὶ τρόμου (phobou kai tromou, 2:12) — “fear and trembling.” ಭಯ ಮತ್ತು ನಡುಕದಿಂದ. Risk: Low-Medium — reverent seriousness, not terror.
γογγυσμῶν καὶ διαλογισμῶν (gongysmōn kai dialogismōn, 2:14) — grumbling and disputing. ಗುಣುಗುಟ್ಟುವಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಾದ-ವಿವಾದ. Risk: Low.
ἄμεμπτοι καὶ ἀκέραιοι, τέκνα θεοῦ ἄμωμα (amemptoi kai akeraioi, tekna theou amōma, 2:15) — blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish. ನಿರ್ದೋಷಿಗಳೂ ಪರಿಶುದ್ಧರೂ ಆದ ದೇವರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು. Risk: Medium — moral blamelessness as a gift-grounded status (children of God), not self-achieved purity.
φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ (phōstēres en kosmō, 2:15) — “lights/luminaries in the world.” ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳಕುಗಳಂತೆ. Risk: Low.
λόγον ζωῆς ἐπέχοντες (logon zōēs epechontes, 2:16) — “holding fast/holding forth the word of life.” ಜೀವದ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬಿಗಿಯಾಗಿ ಹಿಡಿದುಕೊಂಡು. Risk: Low.
σπένδομαι, θυσίᾳ καὶ λειτουργίᾳ (spendomai, thysia kai leitourgia, 2:17) — “I am being poured out [as a drink offering] upon the sacrifice and service [of your faith].” Sacrificial-cultic metaphor. ಪಾನದ್ರವ್ಯ ಅರ್ಪಣೆಯಂತೆ ಸುರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ, ಯಜ್ಞ ಮತ್ತು ಸೇವೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ. Risk: Medium. This is OT sacrificial-system imagery (libation offerings); flag for native-speaker review given Karnataka readers’ familiarity with Hindu yajña/pūja offering vocabulary — clarify this is a metaphor for costly self-giving in gospel service, not an endorsement of any ritual sacrificial system.
ἰσόψυχον (isopsychon, 2:20) — “like-minded/of equal soul” (Timothy). ಸಮಾನ ಮನಸ್ಸುಳ್ಳ. Risk: Low.
λειτουργός (leitourgos, 2:25, of Epaphroditus) — minister, one who renders public service. ಸೇವಕ. Risk: Low-Medium — cultic-liturgical background sense; ordinary ministry service here.
παραβολευσάμενος τῇ ψυχῇ (paraboleusamenos tē psychē, 2:30) — “risking his life.” ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನೇ ಪಣಕ್ಕಿಟ್ಟು. Risk: Low.
Chapter 3
χαίρετε ἐν κυρίῳ (chairete en kyriō, 3:1) — “rejoice in the Lord.” Reuses ಸಂತೋಷ (see ch.1 discussion) combined with established ಕರ್ತ. Risk: High.
κύνας, τὴν κατατομήν (kynas, tēn katatomēn, 3:2)
- κύων (kynōn, “dogs”) — a term of contempt for Judaizing opponents
- κατατομή (katatomē, “mutilation/concision”) — a deliberate wordplay against περιτομή (“circumcision”), reducing the rite to mere “cutting”
- Destination rendering: ನಾಯಿಗಳು (dogs) and ಕೊಯ್ಯುವಿಕೆ/ಛೇದನ (mere cutting, as opposed to true circumcision). Risk: Medium. Preserve the polemical wordplay in a translator note even if a fully equivalent pun is not achievable in Kannada.
περιτομή (peritomē, 3:3) — true circumcision, redefined as worship “by the Spirit of God” rather than the physical rite. Destination: ಸುನ್ನತಿ. Risk: Medium — must be clearly marked as spiritual/covenantal reality, not physical rite, in this verse’s redefinition.
πεποιθότες ἐν σαρκί (pepoithotes en sarki, 3:3-4) — “confidence in the flesh.” ಶರೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಭರವಸೆ. Risk: Medium — introduces the chapter’s central contrast with faith-righteousness.
δικαιοσύνην τὴν ἐκ νόμου (dikaiosynēn tēn ek nomou) vs. τὴν διὰ πίστεως Χριστοῦ (tēn dia pisteōs Christou), 3:9
- Literal meaning: “the righteousness that is from/out of the law” versus “that which is through faith in Christ”
- Contextual theological meaning: the central statement of the Righteousness by Faith versus the Law doctrine — Paul explicitly repudiates his own prior law-based righteousness (blameless “as to righteousness under the law,” v.6) in favor of a righteousness that is “from God” (ἐκ θεοῦ) and received “on the basis of faith” (ἐπὶ τῇ πίστει)
- Destination rendering: reuses established ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ (righteousness) and ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ (law) exactly, contrasted with ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ದೇವರಿಂದ ಬಂದ ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ (“righteousness that comes from God through faith”). Risk: Critical. Apply the same absolute prohibition on ಧರ್ಮ established in the Romans baseline for both “righteousness” and “law” in this passage — Philippians 3:9 is Paul’s most autobiographically vivid statement of this doctrine (he had achieved ಧರ್ಮ-style attainment “according to the law” and counted it loss) and must be flagged for mandatory human theologian review.
ζημίαν … σκύβαλα (zēmian … skybala, 3:7-8) — loss; rubbish/dung (a crude, deliberately shocking word for excrement or refuse). ನಷ್ಟ … ಕಸ. Risk: Low. Note translator may soften ಸಗಣಿ/ಮಲ to the milder ಕಸ (“garbage/rubbish”) in accordance with established Kannada Bible convention, while preserving Paul’s polemical force in a translator note.
τοῦ γνῶναι αὐτόν (tou gnōnai auton) / γνῶσις Χριστοῦ (gnōsis Christou), 3:8,10
- Literal meaning: “to know him” / “the knowledge of Christ”
- Semantic range: personal, relational, experiential knowing (Hebraic יָדַע-influenced usage) rather than abstract or purely propositional knowledge
- Contextual theological meaning: the surpassing worth of relationally knowing Christ, for which Paul counts everything else loss
- Destination rendering: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನನ್ನು ಬಲ್ಲವನಾಗುವುದು / ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಜ್ಞಾನ. Risk: High. ಜ್ಞಾನ (jñāna) is the precise technical term for the Vedantic jñāna-mārga (“path of knowledge”), where liberating knowledge is the impersonal metaphysical realization of the identity of Ātman and Brahman, itself one of several paths to mokṣa alongside bhakti and karma-mārga. Paul’s γνῶσις Χριστοῦ is personal, relational, historical knowing of a specific person — resulting in righteousness by faith and future bodily resurrection (3:9-11), not impersonal self-realization. Prefer the verbal, relational phrasing ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನನ್ನು ಬಲ್ಲವನಾಗುವುದು (“coming to know/be acquainted with Christ”) over the bare noun ಜ್ಞಾನ wherever the Greek permits, and add a translator note wherever ಜ್ಞಾನ is unavoidable.
δύναμιν τῆς ἀναστάσεως αὐτοῦ, κοινωνίαν παθημάτων αὐτοῦ (dynamin tēs anastaseōs autou, koinōnian pathēmatōn autou, 3:10) — “the power of his resurrection [and] the fellowship of his sufferings.” Reuses established ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ (resurrection) and ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ (fellowship); “power” here should follow the baseline convention (ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ, never ಶಕ್ತಿ). παθήματα (pathēmata, “sufferings”) — ಶ್ರಮೆಗಳು/ಬಾಧೆಗಳು. Risk: High. Suffering here is purposeful participation with Christ, not karma-consequence; ties directly to the Joy in Suffering doctrine.
συμμορφιζόμενος τῷ θανάτῳ αὐτοῦ (symmorphizomenos tō thanatō autou, 3:10) — “being conformed to his death” (cognate with μορφή, 2:6-7). ಆತನ ಮರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಸದೃಶನಾಗುತ್ತಾ. Risk: Medium — links back to the kenosis hymn’s vocabulary of “form.”
τετελείωμαι (teteleiōmai) / τέλειοι (teleioi), 3:12,15
- Literal meaning: “I have been perfected/completed” / “mature/perfect ones”
- Semantic range: completion, maturity, full attainment — Paul explicitly denies having reached this in v.12 while using τέλειοι positively of spiritual maturity in v.15 (a deliberate, paradoxical juxtaposition)
- Destination rendering: ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ. Risk: High. Must retain Paul’s explicit disclaimer (“not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect,” v.12) as an integral, inseparable part of the verse; a standalone ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ could otherwise be assimilated to a self-attained perfected/enlightened status (comparable to a jīvanmukta or a Sharana who has reached the highest shatsthala stage) rather than Paul’s paradox of ongoing pursuit grounded in having already been laid hold of by Christ.
διώκω κατὰ σκοπὸν εἰς τὸ βραβεῖον (diōkō kata skopon eis to brabeion, 3:12,14)
- διώκω (diōkō) — Literal meaning: to pursue, press on, chase (also used for persecution elsewhere, but here positively of eager pursuit)
- σκοπός (skopos) — the goal, mark aimed at (cf. σκοποῦντες, 2:4)
- βραβεῖον (brabeion) — the prize (athletic/games imagery, cf. 1 Cor 9:24)
- κατελήμφθην ὑπὸ Χριστοῦ (katelēmphthēn hypo Christou, 3:12) — “I was laid hold of by Christ” — the grace-priority grounding Paul’s pursuit
- Contextual theological meaning: the Pressing on toward the Goal doctrine — vigorous, disciplined pursuit of the resurrection-goal, but explicitly grounded in and responsive to having already been grasped by Christ, not self-directed spiritual achievement
- Destination rendering: ಗುರಿಯೆಡೆಗೆ ಧಾವಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ / ಬಹುಮಾನದೆಡೆಗೆ ಓಡುತ್ತೇನೆ (goal: ಗುರಿ; prize: ಬಹುಮಾನ). Risk: High. Must not be assimilated to the Lingayat shatsthala path (a staged, self-attained ascent through six stages toward Aikya) nor to yogic sādhanā toward mokṣa through disciplined self-effort. The mandatory translator note should anchor Paul’s pursuit explicitly in v.12’s “because Christ Jesus has made me his own” (grace-priority), following the same “obedience of faith” pattern already fixed in the Romans baseline (obedience/pursuit flowing from grace already given, not earning standing).
συμμιμηταί μου γίνεσθε (symmimētai mou ginesthe, 3:17) / τύπος (typos) — “be fellow-imitators of me” / a pattern/example. ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಅನುಕರಿಸುವವರಾಗಿರಿ. Risk: Low-Medium.
ἐχθροὺς τοῦ σταυροῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ (echthrous tou staurou tou Christou, 3:18) — “enemies of the cross of Christ.” ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಶತ್ರುಗಳು. Risk: Medium.
ἡ κοιλία θεός, ἐπίγεια φρονοῦντες (hē koilia theos, epigeia phronountes, 3:19) — “their god is the belly… minding earthly things” (φρονέω again). ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯೇ ಅವರ ದೇವರು … ಭೂಲೋಕದ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಟ್ಟು. Risk: Low-Medium.
ἡμῶν γὰρ τὸ πολίτευμα ἐν οὐρανοῖς ὑπάρχει (hēmōn gar to politeuma en ouranois hyparchei, 3:20)
- πολίτευμα (politeuma) — Literal meaning: commonwealth, state, the body of citizens/citizenship itself (not merely an abstract status but the political community one belongs to) — cognate with πολιτεύεσθε (1:27)
- Semantic range: citizenship, civic community, commonwealth — highly resonant for the Philippian believers, residents of a Roman colonia proud of Roman citizenship and civic identity
- Contextual theological meaning: the Citizenship in Heaven doctrine — believers’ true civic belonging, present-tense (“ὑπάρχει,” already exists now), is in heaven, from which they await their Savior; this reframes present earthly identity and behavior (1:27) in light of ultimate, heavenly belonging
- Destination rendering: ನಮ್ಮ ಪೌರತ್ವ ಪರಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿದೆ (namma pauratva paralōkadallide, “our citizenship is in heaven”). Risk: High. Two distinct risks: (1) political sensitivity — “citizenship” language can carry contemporary nationalist/political weight in some readers’ ears; keep the register civic-relational, not political-nationalist; (2) doctrinal — heavenly citizenship must be taught as a present, secure, and permanent identity and belonging, not a future reward-realm one might merit and then eventually leave (as in the Bhagavad Gita’s teaching that even those who attain heavenly realms through good karma are eventually reborn, since svarga itself lies within the cycle of saṃsāra). Translator note required distinguishing this permanent, gift-grounded heavenly belonging from any meritorious-but-temporary heavenly abode within a cyclical cosmology.
σωτῆρα ἀπεκδεχόμεθα (sōtēra apekdechometha, 3:20) — “we eagerly await a Savior.” ರಕ್ಷಕನನ್ನು ಎದುರುನೋಡುತ್ತೇವೆ (ರಕ್ಷಕ, from established ರಕ್ಷಣೆ root). Risk: High — reuses the Critical salvation-family root.
μετασχηματίσει τὸ σῶμα τῆς ταπεινώσεως ἡμῶν σύμμορφον τῷ σώματι τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ (metaschēmatisei to sōma tēs tapeinōseōs hēmōn symmorphon tō sōmati tēs doxēs autou, 3:21) — “he will transform our lowly body to be conformed to his glorious body” (cognate μορφή/σχῆμα vocabulary returns, tying the letter’s ending back to the kenosis hymn). ಆತನು ನಮ್ಮ ದೀನಾವಸ್ಥೆಯ ದೇಹವನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮಹಿಮೆಯ ದೇಹಕ್ಕೆ ಸದೃಶವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಪರಿವರ್ತಿಸುವನು. Risk: High. Bodily, historical transformation — consistent with the Resurrection doctrine (never a cyclical rebirth or disembodied liberation); reuses established ಮಹಿಮೆ (glory).
Chapter 4
στήκετε ἐν κυρίῳ (stēkete en kyriō, 4:1) — “stand firm in the Lord.” ಕರ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ದೃಢವಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿರಿ. Risk: Medium.
τὸ αὐτὸ φρονεῖν ἐν κυρίῳ (to auto phronein en kyriō, 4:2) — continues the φρονέω unity vocabulary (Euodia/Syntyche). Risk: Medium (see 2:2).
γνήσιε σύζυγε (gnēsie syzyge, 4:3) / συνήθλησαν (synēthlēsan) / ἐν βίβλῳ ζωῆς (en biblō zōēs) — “true companion” / “labored together [in the gospel struggle]” / “in the book of life.” ನಿಜವಾದ ಜೊತೆಗಾರ / ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಹೋರಾಡಿದವರು / ಜೀವಬಾಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ. Risk: Low-Medium.
χαίρετε ἐν κυρίῳ πάντοτε (chairete en kyriō pantote, 4:4) — “rejoice in the Lord always.” Reuses ಸಂತೋಷ (see ch.1). Risk: High.
τὸ ἐπιεικὲς ὑμῶν (to epieikes hymōn, 4:5) — gentleness, reasonableness, forbearing gracious moderation. ಸೌಮ್ಯಭಾವ / ನ್ಯಾಯಬುದ್ಧಿ. Risk: Low-Medium.
μηδὲν μεριμνᾶτε, τῇ προσευχῇ καὶ τῇ δεήσει μετὰ εὐχαριστίας (mēden merimnate, tē proseuchē kai tē deēsei meta eucharistias, 4:6)
- μεριμνάω (merimnaō) — to be anxious, worried
Risk: Low-Medium.
ἡ εἰρήνη τοῦ θεοῦ ἡ ὑπερέχουσα πάντα νοῦν φρουρήσει (hē eirēnē tou theou hē hyperechousa panta noun phrourēsei, 4:7)
- εἰρήνη (eirēnē) — reuses established Romans baseline ಶಾಂತಿ exactly (peace)
- φρουρέω (phroureō) — to guard, garrison (military metaphor)
- Contextual theological meaning: God’s own relational peace, surpassing human understanding, standing sentry over the believer’s heart and mind — continuous with the Romans baseline’s “Peace with God” doctrine, but here applied experientially to anxiety rather than forensically to justification
- Destination rendering: ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಗ್ರಹಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಮೀರಿದ ದೇವರ ಶಾಂತಿಯು … ಕಾಯುವುದು. Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished (per the Romans baseline’s ಶಾಂತಿ note) from ಮನಶ್ಶಾಂತಿ, the inner tranquility sought through bhakti devotion or Lingayat meditative discipline — here it is God’s own gift actively “guarding,” not a state self-cultivated through discipline.
αὐτάρκης εἶναι / αὐτάρκεια (autarkēs einai, 4:11)
- Literal meaning: self-sufficient, content with what one has (αὐτός “self” + ἀρκέω “to be sufficient”)
- Semantic range: contentment, self-sufficiency, satisfaction regardless of circumstance — a term with a rich Stoic philosophical history (the Stoic ideal of self-generated inner independence from external circumstance)
- Contextual theological meaning: the Contentment in All Circumstances doctrine — but Paul’s contentment is explicitly not self-generated Stoic independence; v.13 immediately grounds it in “him who strengthens me” (Christ-dependent, not self-sufficient)
- Destination rendering: ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ (santṛpti). Risk: High. Kannada readers may hear this through the lens of ಸಂತೋಷ/ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ as santoṣa, one of the five niyamas (personal disciplines) in Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras — there, contentment is a self-cultivated equanimity achieved through yogic discipline and vairāgya (detachment from external outcomes). Paul’s contentment is the opposite structurally: not self-generated detachment but Christ-dependent sufficiency (“I can do all things through him who strengthens me,” v.13) amid full engagement with circumstance (abundance and need alike, v.12), not withdrawal from it. Mandatory translator note connecting 4:11 to 4:13.
ταπεινοῦσθαι καὶ περισσεύειν, χορτάζεσθαι καὶ πεινᾶν (tapeinousthai kai perisseuein, chortazesthai kai peinan, 4:12) — “to be brought low and to abound, to be full and to be hungry” (ταπεινόω recurs — see 2:3,8). ದೀನಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸಮೃದ್ಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೂ, ತೃಪ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಹಸಿವಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೂ. Risk: Medium.
πάντα ἰσχύω ἐν τῷ ἐνδυναμοῦντί με (panta ischyō en tō endynamounti me, 4:13)
- ἐνδυναμόω (endynamoō) — Literal meaning: to empower, strengthen from within (ἐν “in” + δύναμις “power/ability”)
- Contextual theological meaning: the source of Paul’s contentment — Christ’s continuous empowering, not self-sufficiency; parallel to the Romans baseline’s Power of God for Salvation entry
- Destination rendering: ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯಗೊಳಿಸುವಾತನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಬಲ್ಲೆನು. Risk: High. Following the Romans baseline convention, never render the strengthening/power root with ಶಕ್ತಿ (risk of Shakta/Chamundeshwari association); use the established ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ root consistently.
συγκοινωνήσαντές μου τῇ θλίψει (synkoinōnēsantes mou tē thlipsei, 4:14) / κοινωνία εἰς λόγον δόσεως καὶ λήμψεως (koinōnia eis logon doseōs kai lēmpseōs, 4:15)
- Continues the κοινωνία (partnership) vocabulary of 1:5, here explicitly of financial partnership (“the matter of giving and receiving”)
- Destination rendering: ನನ್ನ ಸಂಕಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲುಗಾರರಾದಿರಿ … ಕೊಡುವ ಮತ್ತು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ. Risk: Medium.
ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας, θυσίαν δεκτήν, εὐάρεστον τῷ θεῷ (osmēn euōdias, thysian dektēn, euareston tō theō, 4:18) — “a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God” (OT sacrificial-cultic imagery, cf. 2:17). ಸುವಾಸನೆಯ ಪರಿಮಳ, ಸ್ವೀಕಾರಾರ್ಹ ಯಜ್ಞ, ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿಗೆಯಾದದ್ದು. Risk: Medium — same OT-sacrificial-metaphor caution as 2:17.
πληρώσει πᾶσαν χρείαν ὑμῶν κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ ἐν δόξῃ (plērōsei pasan chreian hymōn kata to ploutos autou en doxē, 4:19) — “will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory.” Reuses established ಮಹಿಮೆ (glory). ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಅಗತ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ತನ್ನ ಮಹಿಮೆಯ ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ನೀಗಿಸುವನು. Risk: Medium.
οἱ ἅγιοι … οἱ ἐκ τῆς Καίσαρος οἰκίας (hoi hagioi … hoi ek tēs Kaisaros oikias, 4:22) — “the saints… those of Caesar’s household.” Reuses established ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರು. Risk: High (per baseline).
