Executive Summary

Executive Summary: 3 John (Kannada Language Package Extension)

Why it matters

3 John is the shortest book in the New Testament, but its 14 verses carry five named curriculum doctrines built almost entirely out of ordinary Kannada social vocabulary already saturated with meaning inside Karnataka’s Hindu, Haridasa-bhakti, and Lingayat/Veerashaiva traditions — guest, elder, imitate, duty, deeds, “first place,” and above all “truth” (ಸತ್ಯ, occurring 6 times in 14 verses). Unlike Romans, this letter’s risk is not missing vocabulary; it is crowded semantic neighborhoods where a fluent, correct-sounding Kannada sentence can still drift toward Vedantic or Lingayat meanings the text does not intend. This package extends — and does not contradict — the Romans baseline translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and doctrine_risk_registry.json to close that gap for Phase 2 translation.

Key findings

  • Full-book = core passage. 3 John 1:1-14 is the entire book; verse-by-verse coverage (Steps 7-8) and doctrine-level coverage (Steps 4/11) are therefore already complete for the whole curriculum — no chapter was silently omitted.
  • ಸತ್ಯ (truth) is the structural spine. It anchors 3 of the 5 named doctrines (Truth and Christian Fellowship, Commendation of Faithful Witness, and indirectly Imitating Good) and collides with both Vedantic impersonal-absolute usage and Lingayat vachana self-cultivated-virtue usage.
  • Two doctrines (Hospitality; Church Leadership and Pride) carry the letter’s highest term-density risk, concentrated in vv.5-8 (ಅತಿಥಿ, ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ, ಸಹಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತ) and vv.9-10 (ಪ್ರಥಮಸ್ಥಾನಪ್ರಿಯ, ಹೊರಹಾಕುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಕೃತ್ಯಗಳು).
  • No Critical-tier doctrine originates in this book (unlike Romans’ 7), but one Critical-tier term — ದೇವರು (God) — is inherited and retains its baseline routing.
  • 9 new High-risk terms were introduced by this curriculum (truth, soul, testimony/witness, true, fellow worker, loving to be first, casts out, imitate, doing good/evil-”is of God”), each requiring mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
  • 6 of 12 total doctrines in this registry require human theologian review, 5 require native speaker review, and 1 (epistolary convention) is automated-only — a lighter Critical/High load than Romans at the doctrine level, but a comparably dense High-risk load at the term level relative to the letter’s short length.

Risks

  • ಆತ್ಮ (soul, v.2) risks reading as the Vedantic Ātman (identical with impersonal Brahman) or the Lingayat Aikya-bound self awaiting dissolution — a single-occurrence but maximal-severity ontological risk.
  • ಅತಿಥಿ (guest/stranger, v.5) risks collapsing 3 John’s gospel-partnership hospitality into the generic “Atithi Devo Bhava” merit-generating hospitality-to-any-guest principle.
  • ಪ್ರಥಮಸ್ಥಾನಪ್ರಿಯ (loving to be first, v.9) — a coined compound for a NT hapax legomenon — risks reading as neutral “ambition” or as accidentally dignifying Diotrephes’ sin by association with a legitimately honored guru/ಜಂಗಮ/Sharana preeminence.
  • ಅನುಕರಿಸು (imitate, v.11) risks importing guru-discipleship or mystical-ascent-toward-Aikya categories in place of plain ethical modeling on two named, ordinary figures.
  • “Is of God” (v.11) risks a merit-earns-standing misreading, functionally reintroducing karma-merit or Lingayat kayaka-dasoha theology into the letter’s clearest soteriological statement.
  • Cross-curriculum drift: terms reused from the Romans baseline (ದೇವರು, ಸಭೆ, ಶಾಂತಿ, ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು, ನಂಬಿಕೆ root family) must resolve identically in both curricula; ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು additionally performs a narrower discourse function here than in Romans and needs a distinguishing translator note.

Opportunities

  • Genuine partial cultural resonance points can be taught, not just guarded against: Lingayat kayaka’s this-worldly dignity-of-labor ethic and 3 John’s material, logistical hospitality-as-gospel-partnership share real surface similarity, and the letter’s binary good/evil ethical framing (v.11) resonates with widely-shared Kannada moral intuition — both can be used as bridges before drawing the necessary doctrinal distinctions.
  • Short letter, high reusability: because 3 John shares core vocabulary (ದೇವರು, ಸಭೆ, ಶಾಂತಿ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ನಂಬಿಕೆ family) with the Romans baseline, this package can be authored efficiently as an extension file set rather than a fresh glossary, and future short epistles (1-2 John, Philemon) can likely reuse this same extension pattern.
  • Concrete, nameable examples (Demetrius/Diotrephes) simplify doctrine teaching: unlike Romans’ abstract systematic vocabulary, 3 John’s doctrines are illustrated by two named people in a real local dispute, giving Phase 2 translators and Phase 3 curriculum writers a clear narrative anchor for explaining ಪ್ರಥಮಸ್ಥಾನಪ್ರಿಯ, ಅನುಕರಿಸು, and ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ without needing invented illustrations.
  1. Load both artifact sets together in Phase 2: the Romans baseline translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json/doctrine_risk_registry.json AND this curriculum’s extensions, with the 3 John-specific forbidden-substitution list and escalation triggers in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md (this package) applied on top of the Romans system prompt.
  2. Mandate human theologian review for every occurrence of ಸತ್ಯ (6x), ಆತ್ಮ (1x), ಪ್ರಥಮಸ್ಥಾನಪ್ರಿಯ (1x), ಅನುಕರಿಸು (1x), the “is of God”/“has not seen God” construction (v.11), ಸತ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಸಹಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತರು (v.8), and ಸಭೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರಹಾಕುತ್ತಾನೆ (v.10) — 9 High-risk terms plus the inherited Critical term ದೇವರು, per assets/bible_term_registry.json.
  3. Require the six mandatory translator notes specified in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md (ಸತ್ಯ, ಆತ್ಮ, ಅತಿಥಿ, ಪ್ರಥಮಸ್ಥಾನಪ್ರಿಯ, ಅನುಕರಿಸು, “is of God”) before any Phase 2 segment containing these terms is marked approved.
  4. Route the 6 High-risk doctrines (Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Imitating Good rather than Evil; Church Leadership and Pride; Commendation of Faithful Witness; Truth and Christian Fellowship; Spiritual Relationship with God) to human theologian review, and the 5 Medium-risk doctrines (Apostolic Eldership; Christian Love; Joy in Gospel Faithfulness; Holistic Well-being and Prayer; Christian Greeting and Friendship) to native speaker review, per assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json risk_summary (Critical: 0, High: 6, Medium: 5, Low: 1).
  5. Preserve the elder/Diotrephes and hospitality/expulsion contrasts structurally in Phase 2 output — do not let parallel verbs (ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸು vs. ತಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ/ಹೊರಹಾಕುತ್ತಾನೆ) flatten the letter’s deliberate positive/negative pairing (vv.5-8 vs. vv.9-10) into a single undifferentiated leadership narrative.
