Semantic Analysis

07 — Semantic Analysis: 2 Timothy (Full Book, Original Koine Greek)

How to read this document

Every load-bearing term is analyzed with: Original (Greek), Transliteration, Literal meaning, Semantic range, English variants (major English Bible traditions), Contextual theological meaning in 2 Timothy, and Destination-language (Kannada) rendering risk. Where a term already has an established rendering in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, that exact rendering is reused and flagged [BASELINE REUSE]. New terms proposed for this curriculum are flagged [NEW TERM] with a recommended Kannada rendering and risk tier for Phase 1 Step 2–3 confirmation. All risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework (Critical/High/Medium/Low).

The core passage (2 Timothy 3:14–4:5) receives verse-by-verse treatment. All four chapters of the book receive full chapter-by-chapter coverage, first to last, so that no chapter’s theological vocabulary is silently skipped.

PART A — CORE PASSAGE: 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5 (Verse-by-Verse)

3:14 — “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them”

σὺ δὲ μένε ἐν οἷς ἔμαθες καὶ ἐπιστώθης, εἰδὼς παρὰ τίνος ἔμαθες

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaning in contextKannada rendering & risk
continue/abideμένε (μένω)menōremain, stay, abideto remain in a place, condition, or teaching; to persevere”continue,” “abide,” “remain”Timothy is charged to persist in what he was taught — the opening command of the whole core passage, framing perseverance as fidelity to received teaching, not innovationಮುಂದುವರಿ (munduvari, “continue/go on”) — Medium. Must not be rendered with a term implying mere habit; should carry the sense of active, willed perseverance, consonant with the “Perseverance under Suffering” doctrine.
learnedἔμαθες (μανθάνω)ematheslearned, came to know through instructionto learn by instruction, observation, or experience”learned,” “hast been taught”Refers to Timothy’s instruction from Paul and from Lois/Eunice — a chain of faithful transmissionಕಲಿತೆ (kalite, “you learned”) — Low. Standard vocabulary.
were assured ofἐπιστώθης (πιστόω)epistōthēswere made firm/certain, were convincedto be confirmed, to be given firm confidence; root shares πιστ- with πίστις (faith)“hast been assured of,” “were convinced of,” “have firmly believed”Not mere intellectual learning but settled conviction — the same root as “faith,” binding知识 (knowledge) to trustದೃಢನಂಬಿಕೆಯುಳ್ಳವನಾದೆ (dṛḍhanambikeyuḷḷavanādē, “became firmly convinced”) — High. Built on the baseline’s ನಂಬಿಕೆ (nambike) root [BASELINE REUSE of faith-root]; must preserve the Greek’s deliberate wordplay linking “assurance” to “faith,” not reduce it to bare “knowledge” (ಜ್ಞಾನ), which would sever this link.

3:15 — “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”

from a childἀπὸ βρέφουςapo brephousfrom infancyfrom earliest childhood, even infancy”from a child,” “from infancy”Emphasizes lifelong, formative exposure to Scripture beginning in the home (cf. 1:5, Lois and Eunice)ಬಾಲ್ಯದಿಂದಲೂ (bālyadindalū, “from childhood”) — Low.
holy scripturesἱερὰ γράμματαhiera grammatasacred writings/lettersthe sacred Hebrew writings (OT); distinct from the more technical γραφή of v.16 but overlapping in reference”holy scriptures,” “sacred writings,” “sacred Scriptures”The Old Testament corpus, treasured and taught in Timothy’s Jewish home; anchors the doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture in real, prior possession, not abstract theory[NEW TERM] ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳು (pavitra granthagaḷu, “holy writings/scriptures”) — High. Reuses ಪವಿತ್ರ (holy) [BASELINE REUSE]. Must be distinguished from the vachana literature of the Veerashaiva Sharana poet-saints and from Haridasa devotional kirtane — both genuinely revered in Karnataka religious memory as inspired wisdom, but neither claims to be God’s own breathed-out word in the sense this passage claims for these writings (see 3:16). Established as the Kannada Christian term for the corpus of Scripture generally; used consistently for both ἱερὰ γράμματα (v.15) and γραφή (v.16) to avoid confusing readers with two different Kannada words for one concept.
able to make wiseδυνάμενά…σοφίσαιdynamena…sophisaihaving power to make wiseto instruct so as to produce practical wisdom leading to a goal”able to make thee wise,” “able to instruct you for”Scripture’s sufficiency is functional — it does something specific: leads to salvationಜ್ಞಾನಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಬಲ್ಲ (jñāniyannāgi māḍaballa, “able to make wise”) — Medium.
salvationσωτηρίαsōtēriadeliverance, rescuedeliverance from sin’s penalty and power; reconciliation with God”salvation”The stated goal of Scripture’s wisdom: not general enlightenment but salvation specifically through Christರಕ್ಷಣೆ (rakṣaṇe) — [BASELINE REUSE] Critical. Never ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ/ಐಕ್ಯ, per baseline.
faith which is in Christ Jesusπίστεως τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦpisteōs tēs en Christō Iēsoufaith, the one in Christ Jesustrust with a specific, named object — Christ Jesus”through faith in Christ Jesus,” “faith which is in Christ Jesus”Scripture’s saving wisdom is not free-floating; it is mediated specifically through trust in Christ Jesus — guards against a generic “Scripture makes you spiritually wise” readingಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ ಯೇಸುವಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನಂಬಿಕೆ (Krista Yēsuvinalliruva nambike) — [BASELINE REUSE] Critical. ನಂಬಿಕೆ never ಭಕ್ತಿ; ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ/ಯೇಸು per established transliteration standards.

3:16 — “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”

This is the single most doctrinally load-bearing verse in the epistle for the “Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture” doctrine.

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaning in contextKannada rendering & risk
all scriptureπᾶσα γραφήpasa graphēevery scripture / all scripturecan mean “every individual passage” or “scripture as a whole corpus”; both readings preserve full inspiration”all scripture,” “every scripture,” “the whole of scripture”Claims comprehensive divine origin for the whole OT corpus (and, by extension in church reception, the NT)ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥವೂ (pratiyondu pavitra granthavū, “every scripture”) — High. Reuses ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥ established above. Must not be softened to “some scripture” or “religious writings in general,” which would flatten the totalizing claim.
God-breathedθεόπνευστοςtheopneustosGod-breathed, breathed out by Goda hapax legomenon in the NT; compound of θεός (God) + πνέω (to breathe/blow); denotes divine origin, not merely divine approval”given by inspiration of God,” “God-breathed,” “inspired by God”THE central term of the Inspiration doctrine: Scripture did not originate in human religious insight but was breathed out by God himself — as direct and personal as breath[NEW TERM] ದೇವರಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತವಾದದ್ದು (Dēvarinda prēritavādaddu, “inspired/breathed out by God”) — High (consistent with baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine entry, itself tagged High). Must be distinguished with special care from: (1) the vachana literature of the 12th-century Sharana poet-saints (Basavanna and companions), revered as arising from genuine mystical experience but never claimed by the Lingayat tradition itself to be God’s own spoken breath; (2) Haridasa devotional kirtane compositions, treasured as inspired praise-poetry but categorically distinct; (3) any generic Kannada notion of “divinely inspired poetry” (ಕಾವ್ಯಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ) common in Kannada literary culture, which denotes aesthetic inspiration, not verbal divine origin. A translator note should accompany first use.
profitableὠφέλιμοςōphelimosuseful, beneficial, advantageouspractical usefulness toward a stated goal”profitable,” “useful,” “beneficial”Scripture’s inspiration is not abstract; it cashes out in concrete usefulness for teaching/correcting believers[NEW TERM] ಪ್ರಯೋಜನಕಾರಿ (prayōjanakāri, “profitable/useful”) — Low.
doctrine/teachingδιδασκαλίαdidaskaliateaching, instruction, doctrinethe content taught, or the act of teaching; in the Pastorals frequently = authoritative Christian teaching”doctrine,” “teaching”The first of Scripture’s four profitable uses: positively establishing true doctrine[NEW TERM] ಬೋಧನೆ (bōdhane, “teaching/doctrine”) — Medium. Central term for the “Guarding Sound Doctrine” doctrine category; see also 4:3’s ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία below.
reproofἐλεγμόςelegmosconviction, reproof, refutationexposing and convicting of error”reproof,” “rebuking error,” “conviction”Scripture’s negative, corrective use: exposing false teaching and sin[NEW TERM] ಖಂಡನೆ (khaṇḍane, “reproof/refutation”) — Low.
correctionἐπανόρθωσιςepanorthōsisrestoration, setting right againa hapax legomenon in the NT; restoring something to its proper condition”correction,” “restoration”Scripture not only exposes error but restores the believer to right conduct[NEW TERM] ತಿದ್ದುಪಡಿ (tiddupaḍi, “correction/amendment”) — Low.
instruction in righteousnessπαιδείαν τὴν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃpaideian tēn en dikaiosynētraining/discipline that is in righteousnessπαιδεία = child-training, discipline, education (often with a corrective, formative sense); δικαιοσύνη = righteousness”instruction in righteousness,” “training in righteousness”Scripture forms disciples toward righteous living, not toward ritual duty or cosmic orderನೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ (nītiyalli śikṣaṇa, “training in righteousness”) — [BASELINE REUSE via ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ root] Critical. δικαιοσύνη here uses the same critical term as Romans; never ಧರ್ಮ.

3:17 — “That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works”

ἵνα ἄρτιος ᾖ ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος, πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἐξηρτισμένος

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaning in contextKannada rendering & risk
man of Godὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωποςho tou theou anthrōposthe man of Godan OT phrase used of prophets/leaders (Moses, Elijah); here applied to Timothy/every minister”man of God,” “person of God”Names the goal of Scripture’s shaping work: a person fully belonging to and equipped by God for ministry[NEW TERM] ದೇವರ ಮನುಷ್ಯ (Dēvara manuṣya, “man/person of God”) — Medium. Reuses ದೇವರ (God) [BASELINE REUSE].
complete/perfectἄρτιοςartiosfitted, complete, proficientfully qualified, lacking nothing needed for a task”perfect,” “complete,” “proficient,” “fully equipped”Scripture’s sufficiency produces a minister lacking nothing essential — directly supports the sufficiency (not merely inspiration) half of the doctrine[NEW TERM] ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ (sampūrṇa, “complete”) — Medium. Must not be rendered with a term implying moral perfectionism achieved by self-effort (which would collide with the Lingayat shatsthala self-attainment risk already flagged in the baseline for “imputed_righteousness”); this is Scripture-given adequacy, not self-cultivated attainment.
thoroughly furnishedἐξηρτισμένοςexēstismenosfully equipped, outfitteda nautical/military image of full equipping for a task”thoroughly furnished,” “fully equipped,” “equipped for”Reinforces ἄρτιος: complete equipping for every good work[NEW TERM] ಸುಸಜ್ಜಿತ (susajjita, “fully equipped/furnished”) — Low.
good worksἔργον ἀγαθόνergon agathongood workworks that are morally and spiritually good, done in response to grace”good works,” “every good work”The fruit, not the root, of Scripture’s shaping — works flow from equipping, are not the means of justification (guards against conflation with Romans’ ಕೃಪೆ-vs-works distinction)ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯ (oḷḷeya kārya, “good work”) — Medium. Should be handled with the same grace-vs-merit caution the baseline applies in Romans 3–4 and 11:5–6: these good works are the product of God-given equipping, not a path of self-earned standing analogous to Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethics.

4:1 — “I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom”

TermOriginalTranslit.Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaning in contextKannada rendering & risk
I chargeδιαμαρτύρομαιdiamartyromaiI solemnly testify/chargeto give solemn testimony, to charge with the weight of an oath before witnesses”I charge thee,” “I solemnly urge,” “I solemnly charge you”Opens the epistle’s climactic charge with maximal formality — invoking God and Christ Jesus as witnesses. Foundational to “The Charge to Preach the Word” doctrine[NEW TERM] ಆಣೆಯಿಟ್ಟು ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ (āṇeyiṭṭu ājñāpisuttēne, “I solemnly charge/adjure”) — High. Must retain the oath-like, courtroom solemnity of the Greek; must not be softened to a mere request or friendly encouragement.
judge the living and the deadκρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούςkrinein zōntas kai nekrousto judge living and deadcomprehensive final judgment, both those alive at Christ’s return and those already dead”judge the quick and the dead,” “judge the living and the dead”Establishes Christ’s authority as universal eschatological judge — grounds the urgency of the charge that followsಜೀವಿತರನ್ನೂ ಸತ್ತವರನ್ನೂ ನ್ಯಾಯತೀರಿಸುವ (jīvitarannū sattavarannū nyāyatīrisuva, “judging the living and the dead”) — High. Directly related to baseline’s ಕರ್ತ (Lord) Critical entry: Christ as universal judge, not one judge among several deities in a devotional pantheon.
appearingἐπιφάνειαepiphaneiamanifestation, appearinga visible, decisive manifestation; used in Hellenistic usage for a god’s or ruler’s visitation, in the Pastorals for Christ’s incarnation and/or second coming”appearing,” “manifestation,” “coming”Here refers to Christ’s future, glorious, singular second appearing — the ground of “Assurance of Reward” (see 4:8)[NEW TERM] ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆ (pratyakṣate, “appearing/manifestation”) — High. Must never be assimilated to the recurring, cyclical avatāra-descents of Krishna-bhakti theology (cf. baseline’s Critical flag on ಅವತಾರ for “incarnation”); Christ’s ἐπιφάνεια here is a single, still-future, decisive event, not one of a series of periodic divine manifestations.
kingdomβασιλείαbasileiakingdom, reignGod’s/Christ’s sovereign reign”kingdom,” “his kingdom”Christ’s kingdom, arriving with his appearingಆತನ ರಾಜ್ಯ (ātana rājya, “his kingdom”) — [BASELINE REUSE via ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ pattern] Medium.

4:2 — “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine”

preachκήρυξον (κηρύσσω)kēryxonproclaim as a heraldto make a public, authoritative announcement, as a herald of a king”preach,” “proclaim”The central imperative of the whole charge — herald the word publicly and authoritatively, sharing the same “announcement” register as εὐαγγέλιον (gospel)[NEW TERM] ಸಾರು (sāru, “proclaim/announce”) — High. Root of the doctrine “The Charge to Preach the Word.” Related to, but distinct from, ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ (gospel) [BASELINE REUSE]; the verb of heralding the content the noun names.
the wordὁ λόγοςho logosthe wordhere, the message/content of Christian proclamation — Scripture and gospel content together”the word,” “the Word”Content is not the preacher’s own opinion but “the word” — connects directly back to 3:16’s inspired Scriptureವಾಕ್ಯ (vākya, “word/message”) — High. Distinct from λόγος as used for the divine Logos in Johannine theology; here it names the message content, tied to inspired Scripture (3:16) and gospel proclamation.
in season, out of seasonεὐκαίρως ἀκαίρωςeukairōs akairōsopportunely, inopportunelya merism meaning “always, regardless of convenient timing""in season, out of season,” “whether convenient or not,” “at all times”Total, unconditional readiness for ministry, whatever the circumstance — links to “Perseverance under Suffering”ಅನುಕೂಲ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಾಗಲಿ ಅನಾನುಕೂಲ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಾಗಲಿ (anukūla kāladallāgali anānukūla kāladallāgali, “whether convenient or inconvenient”) — Medium. Avoid translating idiomatically in a way that loses the “regardless of cost” force.
reprove, rebuke, exhortἔλεγξον, ἐπιτίμησον, παρακάλεσονelenxon, epitimēson, parakalesonconvict/expose, rebuke sternly, urge/comfortἐλέγχω = expose/convict of wrong; ἐπιτιμάω = rebuke with authority; παρακαλέω = urge, comfort, encourage”reprove, rebuke, exhort” (various orderings/renderings across versions)Three-part pastoral ministry: correcting error, rebuking sin with authority, and encouraging perseverance — all under the authority of “the word,” not personal charismaಗದರಿಸು, ಖಂಡಿಸು, ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸು (gadarisu, khaṇḍisu, prōtsāhisu) — High. ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸು(ವುದು) is a [BASELINE REUSE] of the established “exhort” entry. The trio must be kept distinct — a single blended Kannada verb would flatten Paul’s threefold pastoral method.
longsufferingμακροθυμίαmakrothymiapatience, forbearance, long-temperednesspatient endurance especially with difficult people or slow results”longsuffering,” “patience,” “great patience”Governs how correction is delivered — with patience, not harshness; balances the sternness of “rebuke”[NEW TERM] ದೀರ್ಘಶಾಂತಿ (dīrghaśānti, “longsuffering/long patience”) — Medium. Distinguish from ಶಾಂತಿ (baseline’s “peace” [BASELINE REUSE of root]) — this is patient forbearance in ministry, not the relational peace-with-God doctrine of Romans 5:1, though the root is shared.

4:3 — “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears”

sound doctrineὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλίαhygiainousa didaskaliahealthy/healthful teachingὑγιαίνω = to be healthy (medical metaphor); a fixed Pastoral-Epistles phrase for doctrinally accurate, spiritually healthy teaching”sound doctrine,” “healthy teaching,” “wholesome teaching”THE central term of the “Guarding Sound Doctrine” doctrine — teaching that produces spiritual health, contrasted with the myths of v.4[NEW TERM] ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ ಬೋಧನೆ (svastha bōdhane, “sound/healthy doctrine”) — High. ಸ್ವಸ್ಥ carries the medical “healthy” sense of ὑγιαίνω; this compound should be used consistently everywhere ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία/λόγοι occurs (also 1:13’s “pattern of sound words”). Risk lies in reducing it to a bland “good teaching,” losing the health/sickness contrast with false teaching’s “cancer” (2:17).
will not endureοὐκ ἀνέξονται (ἀνέχομαι)ouk anexontaiwill not put up with, will not tolerateto bear with, tolerate, endure something unwelcome”will not endure,” “will not put up with”Predicts active rejection of sound teaching, not mere indifference — sets up the doctrine of Apostasy/False Teachersಸಹಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (sahisuvudilla, “will not tolerate/bear”) — Medium.
own lusts/desiresἰδίας ἐπιθυμίαςidias epithymiastheir own desiresself-directed, self-indulgent desire, often with a negative moral connotation in the NT”their own lusts,” “their own desires”Contrasts self-generated religious preference with objective, revealed sound doctrineಸ್ವಂತ ಆಶೆಗಳು (svanta āśegaḷu, “their own desires”) — Medium.
heap to themselves teachersἑαυτοῖς ἐπισωρεύσουσιν διδασκάλουςheautois episōreusousin didaskalouspile up for themselves teachersἐπισωρεύω, a vivid hapax-adjacent compound picturing an accumulating stack”heap to themselves teachers,” “gather around themselves teachers,” “collect for themselves teachers”A market of consumer-driven religious teachers, selected to please rather than to correct — highly relevant to the false-teachers doctrineತಮಗಾಗಿ ಬೋಧಕರನ್ನು ಕೂಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವರು (tamagāgi bōdhakarannu kūḍisikoḷḷuvaru, “gather/pile up teachers for themselves”) — Medium.
itching earsκνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήνknēthomenoi tēn akoēnbeing tickled/scratched as to hearinga vivid idiom for craving novel or flattering things to hear”itching ears,” “wanting to hear something new/pleasing”Names the consumer religious impulse: preference for what pleases over what is true[NEW TERM] ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಇಂಪಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿಸುವಂಥದ್ದನ್ನೇ ಬಯಸುವ (kivige impāgi kēḷisuvanthaddannē bayasuva, “desiring only what sounds pleasant to the ear”) — Medium. A literal “ಕಿವಿ ಕೆರೆತ” (ear-itch) calque would be opaque in Kannada; a natural descriptive equivalent is preferred, per the baseline’s idiom-handling rule, while preserving the doctrinal point (preference-driven religion over truth-driven religion).

4:4 — “And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables”

καὶ ἀπὸ μὲν τῆς ἀληθείας τὴν ἀκοὴν ἀποστρέψουσιν, ἐπὶ δὲ τοὺς μύθους ἐκτραπήσονται

truthἀλήθειαalētheiatruth, realityobjective, revealed truth, especially gospel truth in the Pastorals”truth”The truth being turned away from is the sound doctrine of v.3 — objective content, not a matter of personal preferenceಸತ್ಯ (satya, “truth”) — Medium. Standard term; low risk but doctrinally load-bearing here as the antonym of “myths.”
turn awayἀποστρέψουσιν (ἀποστρέφω)apostrepsousinwill turn away, will avertto turn away from, reject, abandon”shall turn away,” “will turn away”Describes willful rejection of truth — feeds directly into the doctrine of “Apostasy and False Teachers”[NEW TERM] ದೂರ ತಿರುಗಿಸುವರು (dūra tirugisuvaru, “will turn away”) — High as an apostasy-related verb (see Chapter 3 section below for the fuller apostasy term set).
fables/mythsμύθους (μῦθος)mythousmyths, fables, talesinvented stories, contrasted with historical/revealed truth; used pejoratively in the Pastorals for false teaching (speculative genealogies, Gnostic-adjacent tales)“fables,” “myths”Names the destination of those who reject sound doctrine: not neutral alternative teaching but fabricated story dressed as religious content[NEW TERM] ಕಟ್ಟುಕಥೆಗಳು (kaṭṭukathegaḷu, “fabricated/invented stories”) — Medium. Should not be rendered with a term that would read as a generic label for any non-biblical Kannada religious narrative tradition (e.g., purana literature) in a way that gives offense without cause; the point is fabrication set against revealed truth, not a blanket dismissal of all non-Christian story literature.

4:5 — “But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry”

σὺ δὲ νῆφε ἐν πᾶσιν, κακοπάθησον, ἔργον ποίησον εὐαγγελιστοῦ, τὴν διακονίαν σου πληροφόρησον

watch/be soberνῆφε (νήφω)nēphebe sober, be watchfulliterally “be sober” (not drunk); metaphorically, clear-headed spiritual alertness”watch thou,” “be sober,” “keep your head”Contrasts with the drifting, preference-driven crowd of v.3-4; Timothy must stay alert and clear-mindedಎಚ್ಚರವಾಗಿರು (eccaravāgiru, “be watchful/alert”) — Medium.
endure afflictionsκακοπάθησον (κακοπαθέω)kakopathēsonsuffer hardship, endure evilto bear up under suffering/hardship”endure afflictions,” “endure hardship,” “be prepared to suffer”Direct link to the “Perseverance under Suffering” doctrine, echoing 1:8, 2:3, 2:9[NEW TERM] ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸು (kaṣṭavannu sahisu, “endure hardship/suffering”) — High. Central recurring verb for the suffering doctrine across the epistle; see Chapter 1–2 sections below for related terms (συγκακοπάθησον, 1:8, 2:3).
evangelistεὐαγγελιστοῦ (εὐαγγελιστής)euangelistouevangelist, one who proclaims good newsan office/function of gospel proclamation, built directly on the εὐαγγέλιον root”evangelist”Names a ministry function rooted in the gospel itself[NEW TERM] ಸೌವಾರ್ತಿಕ (sauvārtika, “evangelist”) — Medium. Coined transparently from ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ (gospel) [BASELINE REUSE root], preserving the visible link between the office and the message it proclaims — an advantage over an unrelated loanword.
ministryδιακονίαν (διακονία)diakonianservice, ministryservice rendered, especially Christian ministry/service”ministry,” “service”Timothy’s total call to service, to be fully carried out[NEW TERM] ಸೇವೆ (sēve, “service/ministry”) — Low.

PART B — WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY

Chapter 1 (2 Timothy 1:1–18)

Establishes the epistle’s relational and doctrinal foundation: Paul’s apostleship, Timothy’s heritage of faith, the charge to “stir up” his gift, the nature of the gospel and suffering for it, and the example of faithful/unfaithful companions.

gift of Godχάρισμα τοῦ θεοῦcharisma tou theougift of Goda Spirit-given enablement, here specifically Timothy’s ministry gift received via laying on of hands”gift of God,” “gift that is in you”Singular ministry-gifting, related to but distinct from the baseline’s plural doctrinal category “spiritual gifts”[NEW TERM] ದೇವರ ವರ (Dēvara vara, “gift of God”) — Medium. godlinessεὐσέβειαeusebeiagodliness, piety, reverencereverent, God-oriented devotion expressed in life and conduct”godliness,” “piety”Recurs at 3:12 (“all that will live godly in Christ Jesus”) — names the authentic reality that the false teachers’ “form” merely imitates[NEW TERM — MAJOR RISK FLAG] Recommended: ದೈವಭಕ್ತಿ (daivabhakti, “devotion toward God/godliness”) — High. Rationale: the natural, unmarked Kannada word for “piety/godly devotion” is ಭಕ್ತಿ (bhakti) — but the baseline package explicitly and specifically rejects bare ಭಕ್ತಿ as the rendering for “faith” (πίστις) precisely because it carries the devotional-surrender sense central to both Haridasa Krishna-bhakti and Lingayat devotion to Shiva. The same collision risk applies here with even greater force, because εὐσέβεια in 3:5 is explicitly contrasted with an empty “form” — and bare ಭಕ್ತಿ is exactly the word most likely to be supplied by a reader’s own devotional-tradition category (temple bhakti ritual, Lingayat ishtalinga devotion, Haridasa kirtane practice) as “the form of godliness” or, worse, as the substance itself. Qualifying the term with ದೈವ- (“of God/divine,” explicit theistic referent, matching the baseline’s convention of qualifying ವರ with ದೇವರ) reduces — but does not eliminate — this risk. A translator note flagging this collision should accompany every occurrence (3:5, 3:12). Alternatives rejected: bare ಭಕ್ತಿ (too readily absorbed into rival devotional systems); ಧರ್ಮನಿಷ್ಠೆ (contains the forbidden ಧರ್ಮ root).

Sacrificial/offering vocabulary carries some risk of resonance with Hindu puja-offering categories (naivedya, homa); the Kannada must retain the specific “libation poured out” sense tied to Paul’s own life and death, not a generic ritual offering.

Note: Chapter 4:6-22 also contains an extensive list of proper names (Crescens, Titus, Luke, Mark, Tychicus, Carpus, Alexander the coppersmith, Priscilla and Aquila, Onesiphorus’s household, Erastus, Trophimus, Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia) which carry Low risk and should follow established Kannada Bible transliteration conventions consistent with the naming conventions already fixed in the baseline package (e.g., David = ದಾವೀದ, Paul = ಪೌಲ).
