Linguistic Gap Analysis: Ephesians (English → Kannada)
Purpose
This analysis identifies, for the full text of Ephesians (chapters 1–6), where the established Kannada Bible-translation vocabulary (as encoded in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json) is sufficient, where it is absent (missing vocabulary requiring new coinage), and where it exists but sits inside a crowded semantic neighborhood — a zone where a plausible Kannada rendering is already claimed by, or dangerously adjacent to, a term of art in Karnataka’s Haridasa Krishna-bhakti tradition, the Veerashaiva/Lingayat Sharana tradition, mainstream Hindu devotional/philosophical vocabulary, or coastal Karnataka folk religion (bhūta/daiva veneration). It closes with transliteration-vs-paraphrase decisions and a ranked list of this letter’s highest-risk ambiguities, to be carried into Phase 1 Steps 2–3 for formal translation memory and doctrine risk registry updates.
This document does not re-derive the full term list already produced in analysis/08_core_glossary.md; it instead analyzes why each doctrine’s vocabulary behaves the way it does, ranks the resulting risks, and gives the Phase 2 system a decision framework for terms not explicitly enumerated.
Full-book coverage note: All six chapters of Ephesians have been reviewed. Chapters 1–6 all contribute load-bearing new vocabulary or doctrinal risk; no chapter is doctrinally inert in this letter, unlike some stretches of Romans. Coverage confirmation by chapter is given in each doctrine’s row and in the chapter-by-chapter reviewed-content note (Section 6).
1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
For each of the nine curriculum doctrines: the available Kannada vocabulary (reused from baseline and/or newly proposed), its specific weaknesses for this doctrine as it appears in Ephesians, and the recommended handling strategy.
1.1 Salvation by Grace through Faith
| Element | Detail |
|---|
| Available terms | ರಕ್ಷಣೆ (salvation, Critical, reused), ಕೃಪೆ (grace, High, reused), ನಂಬಿಕೆ (faith, High, reused), ಕರುಣೆ (mercy, NEW, Medium), ಉಡುಗೊರೆ (gift, NEW, High), ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು/ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು (works/good works, NEW, Critical), ದೇವರ ಕೈಕೆಲಸ (workmanship, NEW, High), ವಿಮೋಚನೆ (redemption, NEW, Critical) |
| Weakness in Ephesians specifically | Romans treats grace-vs-works mainly propositionally (Rom 3–4, 11:5-6). Ephesians 2:1-10 compresses the entire doctrine into ten verses with FIVE distinct near-synonym terms in tight sequence (νεκρός/dead, ἔλεος/mercy, χάρις/grace, δῶρον/gift, ἔργα/works, ποίημα/workmanship) — Kannada must keep all five lexically distinct in one short passage, a much higher density requirement than Romans presents anywhere. |
| Recommended strategy | Enforce strict one-to-one term mapping across the whole passage: ಮೃತರು (dead) ≠ ಪಾಪ (sin, already distinct) ≠ ಅಪರಾಧಗಳು (trespasses) ≠ ಕರುಣೆ (mercy) ≠ ಕೃಪೆ (grace) ≠ ಉಡುಗೊರೆ (gift) ≠ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು (works, excluded) ≠ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು (good works, fruit) ≠ ದೇವರ ಕೈಕೆಲಸ (workmanship). Treat 2:1-10 as a single controlled-vocabulary unit for back-translation QA, not ten independent segments. |
1.2 Election and Predestination in Christ
| Element | Detail |
|---|
| Available terms | ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ (election, High, reused), ಮೊದಲೇ ನೇಮಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ (predestined, NEW, Critical), ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ/ಕರೆ (called/calling, High, reused), ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ (adoption, High, reused), ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ (inheritance, NEW, High) |
| Weakness in Ephesians specifically | Romans 8-9 introduces election/predestination once as a pastoral-assurance and theodicy topic; Ephesians 1:4-14 opens the entire letter with an unbroken 11-verse chain (chose/predestined/adopted/redeemed/sealed/inheritance) that a Kannada reader will process as a single theological unit. Any inconsistency in this opening chain undermines the letter’s entire foundation before the core passage (2:1-10) is even reached. The everyday Kannada explanatory reflex for “why things are fixed beforehand” is ಹಣೆಬರಹ (fatalism) — already forbidden in the baseline for Romans 8:28/9 but at far higher exposure risk here given the density of predestination language in Eph 1. |
| Recommended strategy | Render ಮೊದಲೇ ನೇಮಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ consistently at both occurrences (1:5, 1:11) and pair every occurrence with explicit relational-Father framing already present in the Greek (“according to the purpose of his will,” “in love”) so the Kannada reader cannot detach the term from its personal, relational anchor. Flag both verses for mandatory theologian review with the same rigor as Romans 9:11-13. |
1.3 The Church as the Body of Christ
| Element | Detail |
|---|
| Available terms | ಸಭೆ (church, Medium, reused), ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇಹ (body of Christ, NEW, High), ತಲೆ/ಶಿರಸ್ಸು (head/headship, NEW, High), ಪವಿತ್ರ ಆಲಯ (holy temple, NEW, High), ಮೂಲೆಗಲ್ಲು (cornerstone, NEW, Medium), ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆ (fullness, NEW, Critical) |
| Weakness in Ephesians specifically | Ephesians uniquely stacks THREE architectural/organic metaphors for the same referent (body, temple, building-with-cornerstone) within chapters 2 and 4-5, whereas Romans uses “body” language only once (12:4-5) without the temple/building layer. Kannada readers must track that ಸಭೆ, ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇಹ, and ಪವಿತ್ರ ಆಲಯ are three metaphors for one referent, not three different entities — a comprehension risk unique to this letter. |
| Recommended strategy | Introduce a standing translator’s-note convention (not shown in final text but tracked in segment cache) cross-referencing all three metaphor terms to “the church” at first occurrence in each chapter, so back-translation reviewers can verify referential consistency across the metaphor shifts. |
1.4 Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
| Element | Detail |
|---|
| Available terms | ಏಕತೆ (unity, NEW, Critical), ಒಂದೇ ಹೊಸ ಮನುಷ್ಯ (one new man, NEW, High), ಬೇಲಿಯ ನಡುಗೋಡೆ (dividing wall, NEW, High), ಸಂಧಾನ (reconciliation, NEW, High), ಪ್ರವೇಶ (access, NEW, Medium-High), ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು (Gentiles, Medium, reused), ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲ್ (Israel, Medium, reused), ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆ (covenant, High, reused) |
| Weakness in Ephesians specifically | This is the single most acute lexical fencing problem in the entire letter: the natural, most fluent Kannada word for “unity/oneness” (ಐಕ್ಯತೆ) is the exact technical term for the Veerashaiva shatsthala path’s final merger-of-identity stage, already forbidden in the baseline for salvation. Ephesians 4:3-6’s sevenfold “one body, one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all” is the highest-density concentration of “oneness” vocabulary anywhere in the NT, occurring in a letter destined for a Kannada-speaking readership disproportionately likely to include Lingayat-background converts. |
| Recommended strategy | Book-level rule (see Section 5, Rank #1): ಏಕತೆ only, ಐಕ್ಯತೆ/ಐಕ್ಯ forbidden absolutely, for every occurrence of “unity”/“one” in a theological (not merely numerical) sense across all six chapters. Escalate every occurrence of the 4:3-6 sequence to theologian review as a single unit. |
1.5 The Mystery of Christ Revealed
| Element | Detail |
|---|
| Available terms | ರಹಸ್ಯ (ದೇವರು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ರಹಸ್ಯ) — “mystery,” NEW, Critical, fixed-phrase only |
| Weakness in Ephesians specifically | Occurs at 1:9, 3:3, 3:4, 3:6, 3:9, 5:32, 6:19 — more concentrated than in any other Pauline letter. The bare Kannada word ರಹಸ್ಯ is the standard term for esoteric guru-to-disciple transmission (Vedantic) and for the “inner meaning” of Lingayat vachana poetry disclosed only to advanced initiates — precisely the opposite trajectory (hidden-to-initiates vs. now-openly-proclaimed-to-all) that Paul intends. This is a direction-of-disclosure inversion risk, not merely a synonym-collision risk, making it structurally different from (and arguably more dangerous than) the unity/ಐಕ್ಯತೆ collision. |
| Recommended strategy | Never permit a bare ರಹಸ್ಯ for this doctrine anywhere in the letter; the qualifying clause ದೇವರು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ (“which God has revealed/disclosed”) must accompany every occurrence without exception, including the marriage application at 5:32. Treat as a fixed liturgical-style compound, not a translatable free phrase. |
1.6 Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
| Element | Detail |
|---|
| Available terms | ದೇವರ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಕವಚ (armor of God, NEW, Medium), ಸೈತಾನ (devil, NEW, High), ಪ್ರಭುತ್ವಗಳು/ಅಧಿಕಾರಗಳು/ಲೋಕಾಧಿಪತಿಗಳು/ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ಸೇನೆಗಳು (rulers/authorities/powers, NEW, High), ದೇವರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ (power of God, High, reused), ದೇವರ ವಾಕ್ಯ (word of God, NEW, Medium), ದೃಢವಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿರಿ (stand firm, NEW, Medium) |
| Weakness in Ephesians specifically | Only Ephesians (of this letter’s peer curriculum) gives an extended, itemized taxonomy of the spiritual realm (6:12) — unlike Romans, which never catalogs hostile spiritual powers this explicitly. Coastal and rural Karnataka’s active folk religious economy of named local spirits (bhūta, preta, daiva) requiring ritual appeasement, propitiation offerings, and specialist mediums provides an immediately available, experientially real interpretive framework into which this taxonomy can be assimilated — a risk with no equivalent salience in the Romans baseline. |
| Recommended strategy | Consistently render all four rank-terms of 6:12 as a single escalating set (never substitute ಶಕ್ತಿ, which would additionally trigger the Shakta-goddess-power collision already flagged for “power of God”). Frame the entire passage with 1:20-21’s past-tense victory language so the “stand firm” instruction reads as defensive confidence in an accomplished triumph, not a ritual-negotiation or appeasement posture toward unpredictable local spirits. |
1.7 Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
| Element | Detail |
|---|
| Available terms | ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೊಬ್ಬರು ಅಧೀನರಾಗಿರಿ (submit to one another, NEW, Critical), ತಲೆ/ಶಿರಸ್ಸು (head, NEW, High — shared with 1.3), ಒಂದೇ ಶರೀರ (one flesh, NEW, Medium), ದಾಸರು (bondservants, NEW, High), ಯಜಮಾನರು (masters, NEW, High), ರಹಸ್ಯ (great mystery — marriage, NEW, Critical, shared with 1.5) |
| Weakness in Ephesians specifically | Two distinct collision risks converge here that have no parallel in Romans’ household material (13:1-7 covers only civil government): (a) ದಾಸ is the honored self-chosen devotional title of the Haridasa poet-saints (Purandara Dāsa, Kanaka Dāsa), risking a reader hearing 6:5-8’s address to actual slaves as devotional aspiration language; (b) ಕರ್ತ’s Critical reserved status for Christ’s exclusive Lordship must not leak into 6:9’s “masters,” even though Paul’s own Greek performs a deliberate κύριος/κύριος wordplay linking earthly and heavening “lords” that Kannada cannot reproduce without breaking the baseline’s Christological safeguard. |
| Recommended strategy | Maintain ದಾಸರು for 6:5-8 (no viable substitute exists) but require a standing translator’s note distinguishing pastoral address to first-century involuntary slave-status persons from Haridasa devotional dasa-identity. Maintain ಯಜಮಾನರು (never ಕರ್ತ) for 6:9’s human masters, with a translator’s note explaining the lost wordplay so reviewers do not “correct” it back toward ಕರ್ತ. |
1.8 Gifts for Building Up the Church
| Element | Detail |
|---|
| Available terms | ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ವರಗಳು (spiritual gifts, Medium, reused), ಸಭಾಪಾಲಕರು (pastors, NEW, Medium), ಬೋಧಕರು (teachers, NEW, Medium), ಸುವಾರ್ತಿಕರು (evangelists, NEW, Medium), ಸಿದ್ಧಗೊಳಿಸುವಿಕೆ (equipping, NEW, Medium), ಅಪೊಸ್ತಲ (apostle, Medium, reused), ಪ್ರವಾದಿ (prophet, Low, reused) |
| Weakness in Ephesians specifically | Romans’ spiritual-gifts material (12:6-8) is a flat list; Ephesians 4:11-12 introduces a specific governance logic — Christ-appointed office-holders exist to equip all the saints for ministry, not to perform ministry on their behalf. The risk is not lexical collision but functional reinterpretation: ಸಭಾಪಾಲಕರು in particular risks being read through the lens of a guru or a Lingayat ಜಂಗಮ office — a person who possesses spiritual authority in his own right — rather than a functional role serving a “priesthood of all believers” logic that has no exact structural parallel in either the Haridasa or Veerashaiva traditions. |
| Recommended strategy | Render ಸಿದ್ಧಗೊಳಿಸುವಿಕೆ (equipping) prominently and consistently at 4:12 to keep the “for the equipping of the saints” purpose clause visible; do not allow office-name translations alone (ಸಭಾಪಾಲಕರು, ಬೋಧಕರು, ಸುವಾರ್ತಿಕರು) to be excerpted from this purpose clause in any pedagogical material. |
1.9 Walking in Newness of Life
| Element | Detail |
|---|
| Available terms | ನಡೆಯುವುದು (walk, NEW, Medium), ಹಳೆಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯ/ಹೊಸ ಮನುಷ್ಯ (old self/new self, NEW, High), ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ (sanctification, High, reused), ಆತ್ಮಭರಿತರಾಗಿರಿ (be filled with the Spirit, NEW, High), ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮನನ್ನು ದುಃಖಪಡಿಸುವುದು (grieve the Spirit, NEW, High) |
| Weakness in Ephesians specifically | περιπατέω (“walk”) recurs seven times (2:2, 2:10, 4:1, 4:17, 5:2, 5:8, 5:15) as Paul’s signature ethical metaphor — a far higher single-root repetition rate than any comparable Romans passage. Kannada’s rich vocabulary of spiritual “paths” (mārga: bhakti-mārga, jñāna-mārga, karma-mārga in general Hindu usage; the Lingayat shatsthala as a graded ascent-path) makes ನಡೆಯುವುದು vulnerable to being heard as “the Christian mārga,” one path among several available paths of spiritual attainment, rather than the lived-out fruit of a salvation already completed apart from any path walked. |
| Recommended strategy | Render ನಡೆಯುವುದು identically at all seven occurrences (never substitute ಮಾರ್ಗ-family vocabulary such as “ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಮಾರ್ಗ” for the underlying concept), and ensure catechetical material explicitly states that the “walk” instructions of chapters 4-6 follow, and are enabled by, the “already seated with Christ” status secured in 2:1-10 — sequence, not one option among parallel paths. |
2. Missing Vocabulary Requiring New Coinage
The following concepts have no existing Kannada Christian tradition term and required first-time coinage in analysis/08_core_glossary.md / the extended bible_term_registry.json. These represent genuine vocabulary gaps (as distinct from the crowded-neighborhood problems in Section 3, where a term exists but is contested).
| Concept | Gap type | Coined solution | Coinage basis |
|---|
| προορίζω (predestined) | No prior Kannada Bible-translation-tradition term distinct from “election” | ಮೊದಲೇ ನೇಮಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ | Modeled on the existing ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ (called) participle pattern for internal consistency |
| ἀπολύτρωσις (redemption) as distinct from σωτηρία (salvation) | Kannada tends to use one broad “liberation” register for both | ವಿಮೋಚನೆ | Existing word, but never previously fenced against ಮೋಕ್ಷ in a Bible-translation register; fencing (not the word itself) is the innovation |
| πλήρωμα (fullness, of Christ/church) | No prior term distinguishing this from generic “completeness” | ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆ | Compound distancing from ಪೂರ್ಣ used alone (too close to Advaitic “fullness pervading all” register) |
| μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ (dividing wall) | No prior term; unique NT hapax image | ಬೇಲಿಯ ನಡುಗೋಡೆ | Literal compound, “fence’s middle-wall,” grounded in agrarian/village boundary imagery familiar in Kannada rural experience |
| συγκληρονόμος (fellow heirs) | No prior compound term | ಸಹ ಬಾಧ್ಯಸ್ಥರು | Built on newly coined ಬಾಧ್ಯತೆ (inheritance) + ಸಹ- (co-) prefix |
| ἀρραβών (pledge/guarantee) | No prior theological term; commercial term exists but untested in Bible register | ಮುಂಗಡ | Standard Kannada commercial-legal term for “advance/down payment,” repurposed with theological anchoring |
| κεφαλή as ecclesial/household “head” | No prior single established rendering spanning both ecclesiology and household code | ತಲೆ / ಶಿರಸ್ಸು | Dual-register solution: literal body-part term for ecclesial metaphor context, more formal register for household-code context |
| δοῦλοι in a household-code pastoral (not devotional) sense | No prior term insulated from Haridasa dasa-identity | ದಾಸರು retained, but usage fenced by mandatory translator’s note | No alternative term exists that isn’t either more obscure or equally collision-prone; fencing rather than substitution is the strategy |
| πανοπλία τοῦ θεοῦ (full armor of God) | No prior fixed compound | ದೇವರ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಕವಚ | Compound built from standard military-loan vocabulary (ಕವಚ, armor) |
| ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι/κοσμοκράτορες/πνευματικὰ τῆς πονηρίας (fourfold powers) | No prior fixed fourfold taxonomy in Kannada Bible tradition | ಪ್ರಭುತ್ವಗಳು, ಅಧಿಕಾರಗಳು, ಈ ಅಂಧಕಾರದ ಲೋಕಾಧಿಪತಿಗಳು, ದುಷ್ಟತ್ವದ ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ಸೇನೆಗಳು | Compound coinages avoiding ಶಕ್ತಿ throughout; deliberately avoids any term already used for local bhūta/daiva spirit taxonomy |
| ποίημα (workmanship) as distinct from ἔργα (works) | No prior Kannada pair distinguishing “what is made” from “what is done” | ದೇವರ ಕೈಕೆಲಸ vs. ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು | Compound “God’s handiwork” vs. plain “deeds/works,” visually and root-distinct |
Assessment: Ephesians requires substantially more new coinage than Romans did (11 genuinely novel compounds vs. Romans’ comparatively modest additions), reflecting this letter’s uniquely dense concentration of union-with-Christ, cosmology, and household-relationship vocabulary. All coinages above are now formally proposed in the extended bible_term_registry.json and require Phase 1 Step 2/3 ratification before Phase 2 use.
3. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Requiring Fencing
Unlike Section 2’s true gaps, the following concepts have a ready, fluent, natural Kannada word available — but that word is already the name of a specific doctrine, office, or attained state within one of Karnataka’s living religious traditions. These require explicit fencing (forbidden-substitution rules), not new coinage.
| Kannada term at risk | Claimed by | Doctrine it threatens | Fencing strategy |
|---|
| ಐಕ್ಯತೆ / ಐಕ್ಯ | Veerashaiva/Lingayat shatsthala path’s final merger-with-Shiva stage (already forbidden in baseline for “salvation”) | Unity of Jews and Gentiles; Church as Body of Christ | Absolute prohibition; ಏಕತೆ only, for every occurrence of “unity”/“oneness” in Ephesians (highest-density book in the curriculum for this term) |
| bare ರಹಸ್ಯ | Vedantic guru-śiṣya esoteric transmission; Lingayat vachana “inner meaning” for initiates | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | Mandatory fixed qualifying phrase ದೇವರು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ರಹಸ್ಯ at every occurrence, no exceptions, including 5:32 |
| ಶಕ್ತಿ | Shakta goddess-power tradition (Chamundeshwari, Mysore) — already forbidden in baseline for “power of God” | Spiritual Warfare (rulers/authorities/powers), Power of God for Salvation | Never used for either divine power or hostile spiritual “forces”; use ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ (divine) and ಸೇನೆಗಳು/ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ಸೇನೆಗಳು (hostile, “hosts/armies”) instead |
| ಗುರು / ಜಂಗಮ | Lingayat wandering-teacher office and generic guru-status (self-attained spiritual authority) | Gifts for Building Up the Church (pastors, teachers); Apostleship | Never substitute for ಸಭಾಪಾಲಕರು, ಅಪೊಸ್ತಲ; these are commissioned functional offices, not attained spiritual rank |
| ದಾಸ | Haridasa devotional self-title (Purandara Dāsa, Kanaka Dāsa) — honored, freely chosen bhakti-surrender identity | Household Codes (bondservants) | Retain ದಾಸರು (no viable alternative) but mandatory translator’s note distinguishing pastoral address to actual social-legal slave status from the honored devotional title |
| ಕರ್ತ leaking into human “masters” | Christ’s exclusive Lordship (baseline Critical term) | Household Codes; Lordship of Christ | ಯಜಮಾನರು exclusively for 6:9’s human masters; ಕರ್ತ never applied to a human referent anywhere in the letter |
| ಮೋಕ್ಷ / ಮುಕ್ತಿ near-synonymy with ವಿಮೋಚನೆ | Mainstream Hindu liberation-from-rebirth-cycle doctrine | Salvation by Grace through Faith (redemption) | ವಿಮೋಚನೆ retained (no better alternative) but every occurrence anchored to “through his blood” (1:7) so the price-paid, relational sense is never separable from the term |
| ಪೂರ್ಣ used alone for “fullness” | Advaitic/Vedantic monistic “fullness pervading all” (Isha Upanishad register) | Church as Body of Christ; Mystery of Christ Revealed | Use compound ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆ, and where possible retain explicit reference to “of Christ” / “of him who fills all in all” (1:23) rather than an unanchored abstract noun |
| ಮಾರ್ಗ (path) as a gloss for “walk” | Bhakti-mārga / jñāna-mārga / karma-mārga; Lingayat shatsthala ascent-path | Walking in Newness of Life | Never use ಮಾರ್ಗ-family vocabulary for περιπατέω; ನಡೆಯುವುದು (walk/conduct oneself) only, framed as fruit of a completed salvation, not a path toward one |
| ಭೂತ/ಪ್ರೇತ/ದೈವ appeasement framework | Coastal Karnataka bhūta kōla, daivaradhane folk spirit-veneration practice | Spiritual Warfare; Devil; Rulers/Authorities | No lexical substitution risk per se, but strong conceptual assimilation risk; must be fenced homiletically/pedagogically (in surrounding teaching material, not just terminology) by consistently pairing “the devil”/“powers” language with 1:20-21’s already-accomplished, past-tense victory framing |
4. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Term | Decision | Rationale |
|---|
| μυστήριον (mystery) | Paraphrase (fixed compound), not transliteration | A transliterated “ಮಿಸ್ಟರಿ” would read as a foreign loanword with no theological weight; the fixed Kannada compound carries the necessary disclosure-direction correction that a loanword cannot supply |
| ἀπολύτρωσις (redemption) | Native-root paraphrase (ವಿಮೋಚನೆ), not transliteration | An existing native word is available and already carries the correct “liberation/release” sense; the risk is fencing against ಮೋಕ್ಷ, not lack of vocabulary, so transliteration is unnecessary |
| ἀρραβών (pledge/guarantee) | Native commercial-term repurposing (ಮುಂಗಡ), not transliteration | Kannada has a precise existing commercial-legal term for “advance/down payment” that maps closely onto Paul’s legal-guarantee metaphor; using it preserves the everyday-life resonance Paul intended |
| δοῦλοι (bondservants) | Native term retained (ದಾಸರು) despite collision, not replaced with transliteration | No transliteration (“ಡೌಲೋಸ್”) would communicate anything to a Kannada reader; the fencing note is the required mitigation, not lexical substitution |
| διάβολος (devil) | Transliteration (ಸೈತಾನ), established Kannada Christian term | Already the settled Kannada Bible-tradition rendering (cognate with “Satan”); functions as a proper name, appropriately transliterated rather than paraphrased as a common noun that might blend into folk-spirit taxonomy |
| ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι, κοσμοκράτορες, πνευματικὰ τῆς πονηρίας (rulers/authorities/powers) | Paraphrase compounds, not transliteration | These are descriptive Greek common nouns, not proper names; native compounds allow the “already defeated, ranked, organized” sense to be conveyed, which a transliteration could not carry |
| πανοπλία τοῦ θεοῦ (armor of God) | Paraphrase (ದೇವರ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಕವಚ) | Standard loan-military vocabulary (ಕವಚ, armor) already exists in Kannada from long translation tradition; no transliteration needed or helpful |
| Proper names (Ephesus, Tychicus, etc.) | Transliteration per established Kannada Bible conventions | Standard proper-noun handling; consistent with baseline’s Jesus/David/Israel transliteration practice |
| Ἀμήν / ἀλληλουϊά-type liturgical proper nouns (if present) | Transliteration (ಆಮೆನ್, ಹಲ್ಲೆಲೂಯಾ) | Per baseline convention; Ephesians 3:21’s doxological “Amen” follows the same rule |
| μυστήριον μέγα applied to marriage (5:32) | Reuse the same fixed mystery-paraphrase, not a separate marriage-specific coinage | Preserves the reader’s ability to see this as a specific application of the one book-wide “mystery” doctrine rather than an unrelated new concept |
General principle applied throughout: transliteration is reserved for (a) proper names, (b) already-settled Kannada Christian liturgical terms (Amen, Hallelujah, Satan), and (c) terms where no native Kannada word exists that would communicate meaning at all. Paraphrase (including newly coined compounds) is preferred wherever a native term exists but requires doctrinal fencing — this preserves comprehensibility for the “educated urban believer / new convert” reading-level target while still requiring rigorous glossary discipline.
5. Ranked List of Ephesians’ Highest-Risk Ambiguities
Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × collision proximity × frequency in the letter). All Rank 1–8 items require mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence; Rank 9–12 require native speaker review at minimum.
| Rank | Ambiguity | Passages | Why highest risk |
|---|
| 1 | ಏಕತೆ vs. forbidden ಐಕ್ಯತೆ (unity) | 2:14-16; 4:3-6, 4:13 | Highest-frequency “oneness” language in the NT concentrated in one letter, colliding with a named, specific, doctrinally opposite Lingayat technical term already flagged Critical in the baseline. A single mistranslation here inverts the entire doctrine (distinct-persons-in-unity → merged-loss-of-identity). |
| 2 | Bare ರಹಸ್ಯ vs. fixed ದೇವರು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ರಹಸ್ಯ (mystery) | 1:9; 3:3-9; 5:32; 6:19 | Direction-of-disclosure inversion risk (hidden-to-initiates vs. now-openly-revealed-to-all) is structurally opposite to two live regional traditions (Vedantic and Lingayat esoteric transmission), and recurs seven times across the letter. |
| 3 | ಮೊದಲೇ ನೇಮಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ vs. ಹಣೆಬರಹ-style fatalism (predestination) | 1:5, 1:11 | Opens the letter; if read fatalistically, undermines the relational “Father,” “in love,” “according to his purpose” framing that Paul himself supplies in the same verses, before the reader ever reaches the core passage. |
| 4 | ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ-root compounds for “made alive/raised/seated with Christ” | 2:5-6 | Directly inside the core passage; must simultaneously avoid ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (rebirth) AND avoid reading as Aikya-style merger, a double safeguard concentrated in the letter’s theological center. |
| 5 | ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು/ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು vs. ಕರ್ಮಗಳು (works/good works) | 2:9-10 | The core passage’s climactic grace-vs-works antithesis; ಕರ್ಮ contamination would make the verse teach the opposite of “not by works” by invoking the pan-Indian karma-law framework the verse is written to exclude. |
| 6 | ದಾಸರು — pastoral slave-address vs. honored Haridasa devotional self-title | 6:5-8 | Same word, opposite social/theological referents; risk of a reader hearing dignified devotional aspiration where Paul addresses actual coerced social status pastorally. |
| 7 | ಯಜಮಾನರು vs. ಕರ್ತ leakage (human “masters”) | 6:9 | Protects the baseline’s single most safeguarded Christological term (ಕರ್ತ) from bleeding into a human referent; the lost Greek wordplay increases the chance a well-meaning reviser “restores” ಕರ್ತ here. |
| 8 | ದೇವರ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ / ಸೇನೆಗಳು vs. ಶಕ್ತಿ (power, both divine and hostile) | 1:19-21; 3:16; 6:10, 6:12 | Recurs at both poles of the letter’s power-theology (God’s power for believers; hostile powers arrayed against them) — a single ಶಕ್ತಿ substitution anywhere in this set triggers the Shakta-goddess collision the baseline already treats as Critical. |
| 9 | ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆ (fullness) — relational vs. monistic-pervasive reading | 1:23; 3:19; 4:13 | Recurs at both Christological (1:23) and ecclesial-maturity (4:13) senses; risk of Advaitic “fullness pervading all distinctions” misreading in a letter that otherwise insists on retained personal distinctness (see #1, #4). |
| 10 | ಬೇಲಿಯ ನಡುಗೋಡೆ (dividing wall) — genuine positive resonance requiring careful grounding | 2:14 | Unlike most entries above, this is a productive ambiguity: real cultural resonance with caste-barrier memory could either powerfully illuminate the text or wrongly reduce Christ’s cross to a generic social-equality symbol if the specific cross-work grounding (2:14-16) is not kept explicit. |
| 11 | ಆತ್ಮಭರಿತರಾಗಿರಿ (be filled with the Spirit) vs. folk spirit-possession/trance framework | 5:18 | Coastal Karnataka’s bhūta kōla trance practice and Vedantic/yogic “filling” imagery both offer ready but doctrinally incompatible interpretive lenses; risk is conceptual assimilation more than lexical substitution. |
| 12 | ತಲೆ/ಶಿರಸ್ಸು (head/headship) — consistency across ecclesial and household-code uses | 1:22; 4:15; 5:23 | Same term must function coherently across two distinct metaphor domains (Christ over church; husband toward wife) without the ecclesial sense being flattened into a merely hierarchical household sense or vice versa. |
6. Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Confirmation
| Chapter | Load-bearing content contributing to this analysis |
|---|
| 1 | Election/predestination chain (Ranks #3, #8, #9); mystery (#2); heavenly places; fullness (#9); power of God (#8) |
| 2 | Core passage 2:1-10 — grace/works/workmanship density (#5), made-alive/raised/seated (#4); dividing wall/reconciliation/access/unity (#1, #10); holy temple, cornerstone |
| 3 | Mystery (#2) at highest density in the letter (3:3-9); fellow heirs, inheritance, stewardship of grace, manifold wisdom (ties to #8’s powers) |
| 4 | Unity sevenfold sequence (#1) at 4:3-6, 4:13; body of Christ, headship (#12); gift-offices and equipping; old self/new self; grieve the Spirit |
| 5 | Filled with the Spirit (#11); fragrant offering; great mystery/marriage (#2); submit to one another; headship in household code (#12); one flesh |
| 6 | Household code conclusion — bondservants/masters (#6, #7); full armor of God, devil, rulers/authorities/powers (#8), stand firm; word of God; intercession/ambassador closing |
No chapter of Ephesians is doctrinally inert; all six are represented in the ranked ambiguity list and/or the vocabulary matrix above. This confirms full-book coverage per the PRD Phase 1 mandate.
7. Summary Recommendations for Phase 1 Steps 2–3
- Formally ratify all coined terms in Section 2 into
translation_memory.json v2, incrementing the version number and recording each as Ephesians-sourced additions layered on the Romans baseline.
- Add a book-level validation rule to
doctrine_risk_registry.json (parallel to the baseline’s forbidden-substitution checklist) specifically flagging ಐಕ್ಯತೆ, bare ರಹಸ್ಯ, ಶಕ್ತಿ, ಮಾರ್ಗ-family “walk” substitutions, and ಕರ್ತ-for-human-master leakage as Ephesians-specific automated pre-checks, given this letter’s unusually high density of each collision type relative to Romans.
- Treat Ephesians 1:3-14, 2:1-10, and 4:3-6 as indivisible translation units for QA purposes — internal cross-term consistency within each unit matters as much as, or more than, individual term accuracy.
- Escalate all twelve ranked ambiguities in Section 5 to mandatory theologian (Ranks 1-8) or native speaker (Ranks 9-12) review in every occurrence, consistent with the baseline’s Critical/High routing rules.
