Linguistic Gap Analysis — Gospel of John (English → Kannada)
Phase 1, Step 8
This document extends the baseline Romans Language Package for the Gospel of John curriculum. It does not contradict any established baseline rendering (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json, 12_ai_translation_requirements.md); it identifies where John’s distinctive vocabulary — the Logos prologue, the seven “I Am” statements, the Paraclete discourses, and above all the new-birth teaching of John 3:1-21 — introduces gaps, collisions, and ambiguities not addressed by the Romans package, and recommends handling strategies consistent with baseline conventions.
Scope covers the full book (John 1–21), built on analysis/08_core_glossary.md and the extended assets/bible_term_registry.json entries already drafted for John. The core passage (John 3:1-21) is treated as the theological anchor and receives the deepest analysis, but every chapter’s load-bearing vocabulary is accounted for.
1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
For each doctrine named in the curriculum parameters: available Kannada terms, their weaknesses (semantic collisions with Karnataka’s dominant traditions — mainstream Hindu devotion, Haridasa Krishna-bhakti, Veerashaiva/Lingayat theology, and folk traditions such as Tulunadu Bhuta Kola and Nagaradhane), and the recommended handling strategy.
1.1 The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
| Available Kannada term(s) | Weakness / collision | Recommended strategy |
|---|
| ವಾಕ್ಯ (Logos) | Collides with Vāc / Śabda-Brahman — the eternal cosmic Word/Sound as an impersonal ultimate ground of reality in Vedic and Kashmir Śaiva thought, independently “accessible” through meditation/mantra. | Anchor every occurrence in John 1 with the immediate personal-pronoun context (“he was with God,” “he became flesh”). Never let ವಾಕ್ಯ stand alone as an abstract philosophical noun; pair with personal verbs. Mandatory translator note at 1:1. |
| ದೇವರ ಮಗ, ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ | Risk of reduction to (a) an avatar among Vishnu’s many descents (Haridasa background) or (b) an exceptionally realized human teacher who “attained” divine status, the closest available Lingayat category (a Sharana who reached Aikya). | Always pair ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ with ದೇವರ ಮಗ; never present Sonship as attainable status. |
| ಲೋಕದ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಗೆ ಮುಂಚೆ (pre-existence, 17:5,24) | Risk of assimilation to cyclical-time cosmology (kalpas), where “before this world” could imply merely a prior cosmic cycle rather than absolute priority to creation itself. | Render as unambiguous linear, absolute priority; anchor to Genesis 1:1/John 1:1 parallel. |
| ನಾನೇ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ (absolute “I am,” 8:58) | Kannada colloquial usage lacks a natural construction for timeless self-existence; risk of flattening to simple past (“I existed”). | Preserve tense contrast (Abraham’s past vs. Christ’s timeless present) explicitly; mandatory translator note. |
| ತನ್ನನ್ನು ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸಮಾನ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡನು (5:18) | Risk of softening to “close fellowship with God,” a status many bhakti traditions also claim for great devotees. | Preserve as a claim to shared divine nature/authority, not devotional intimacy. |
1.2 The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
| Available Kannada term(s) | Weakness / collision | Recommended strategy |
|---|
| ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದು / ಮೇಲಣಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದು | The single most dangerous forbidden-substitution risk in the whole book: ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (reincarnation/rebirth within samsara) is the default Kannada word an untrained translator would reach for. | NEVER ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. Use a verb-based construction (ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದು, “to be born”) rather than the noun ಜನ್ಮ, which is saturated with karmic-rebirth associations. Mandatory translator note at first occurrence (3:3). |
| ಗಾಳಿ (wind) / ಆತ್ಮ, ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ (Spirit) | The Greek πνεῦμα pun (wind blows / Spirit acts) has no Kannada cognate pair; a literal split loses the wordplay entirely. | Add an explanatory clause or footnote at 3:8 rather than attempting to force a false Kannada pun. Never render unmarked πνεῦμα as ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ. |
| ನೀರು / ಜೀವಜಲ (water) | Risk of assimilation to ritual-bathing purification practice (widespread in regional temple and river-pilgrimage religion). | Preserve the OT/baptismal interpretive ambiguity (Ezekiel 36) without resolving it; do not gloss as ritual cleansing alone. |
| ಶರೀರ / ಮಾಂಸ (flesh) | Risk of Gnostic-adjacent misreading (flesh as inherently evil matter), inconsistent with 1:14 where the Word himself takes on flesh. | ಶರೀರ for creaturely origin/limitation; ಮಾಂಸ reserved for visceral flesh-and-blood contexts (6:53-56). |
| ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ (kingdom of God, entered by new birth, 3:3,5) | Baseline-established, low collision risk in itself, but in ch.3 it must be tied specifically to the new-birth condition, not treated as a generic devotional or ethical goal reachable by other paths. | Reuse baseline exactly; reinforce the “unless…cannot” exclusivity of the new-birth condition for kingdom entry. |
1.3 Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
| Available Kannada term(s) | Weakness / collision | Recommended strategy |
|---|
| ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ | ಜೀವ (jīva) is the standard Vedantic/Jain technical term for the individual embodied soul bound in samsara, awaiting moksha through absorption into Brahman. Compound ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ risks being heard as “the jiva’s eternality” (a metaphysical status) rather than a relationship. | Anchor decisively via John 17:3’s definition (“this is eternal life, that they know you…”); teach ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ as present-possessed, relational, personal fellowship, never ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ/ಐಕ್ಯ. |
| ನಂಬಿಕೆ (faith) | Baseline-established; risk of collapse into ಭಕ್ತಿ (devotional surrender) directed at any chosen deity. | Reuse exactly; the object of ನಂಬಿಕೆ in John is always the specific person of the Son (repeatedly named). |
| ದೇವರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು (children of God, 1:12-13) | Risk of merit- or lineage-based reading (echoing caste/birth-based spiritual status categories). | Preserve the “not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” contrast explicitly. |
1.4 God’s Love for the World
| Available Kannada term(s) | Weakness / collision | Recommended strategy |
|---|
| ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಿದನು / ಪ್ರೀತಿ (ἀγαπάω) | Haridasa Krishna-bhakti’s prema/bhakti is devotee-initiated and exchange-structured: the devotee’s surrender is answered by the deity’s favor. John 3:16 reverses the direction of causation — God initiates toward a rebellious world. | Render with unmistakably unilateral, initiating divine action; teaching note contrasting direction of causation with typical bhakti approach patterns. |
| ಲೋಕ (κόσμος, “world”) | ಲೋಕ is also the ordinary word for one of the cosmological “worlds”/realms (bhūloka, devaloka) and can carry māyā (illusion) associations — a realm ultimately to be transcended, not loved and redeemed. | Anchor ಲೋಕ as the real, created, fallen-but-loved object of God’s redemptive action throughout (1:10; 3:16-17; 15:18-19; 17:14), never an illusory realm. |
| ಲೋಕದ ರಕ್ಷಕ (Savior of the world, 4:42) | Must not read as scope narrowed to a single ethnic or caste community. | Preserve universal scope; pairs with baseline ರಕ್ಷಣೆ-root. |
1.5 Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
| Available Kannada term(s) | Weakness / collision | Recommended strategy |
|---|
| ನ್ಯಾಯತೀರ್ಪು ಮಾಡುವುದು / ತೀರ್ಪು (judge/judgment) | Risk of assimilation to the impersonal, automatic working-out of karma — a default explanatory framework in everyday Kannada speech. | Anchor as a personal divine verdict grounded specifically in relationship to Christ (belief/unbelief in him), not automatic cosmic retribution. |
| ಬೆಳಕು / ಕತ್ತಲೆ (light/darkness) | Darkness risks being read as mere avidya (ignorance) dispellable through gnosis in Advaitic frameworks, rather than a morally culpable, willed rejection (“their deeds were evil,” 3:19). | Preserve moral-volitional force; light is the person of Christ confronting the world, not an impersonal illuminating principle or generic devotional divine-light (jyoti) imagery. |
| ದೇವರ ಕೋಪ (wrath of God, 3:36) | Risk of flattening into impersonal karmic consequence rather than a personal God’s righteous anger. | Anchor as the righteous, personal anger of the same God who loves (3:16) and therefore also judges. |
| ನಾಶವಾಗುವುದು (perish) | Risk of being read as a neutral “release” or even a positive dissolution, confusable with moksha-style liberation-from-samsara framing. | Render as a real, personal, negative destiny — the opposite of eternal life, not liberation from anything. |
| ಅವಿಧೇಯನಾಗಿರುವವನು (disobey, 3:36) | Must be read as functionally identical to unbelief itself, not a separate ethical category. | Teaching note: John treats “not believing” and “disobeying the Son” as the same decisive act. |
1.6 The Seven “I Am” Statements
| Statement | Available Kannada term | Weakness / collision | Strategy |
|---|
| Bread of life (6:35) | ಜೀವದ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ | Risk of literal-food-only reading. | OT manna background note (Exodus 16) required. |
| Light of the world (8:12; 9:5) | ಲೋಕದ ಬೆಳಕು | See §1.5 light/darkness. | Consistent rendering across both occurrences. |
| Door (10:7,9) | ಬಾಗಿಲು | Low risk; exclusivity of access must not be softened. | Preserve exclusivity without qualification. |
| Good shepherd (10:11,14) | ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕುರುಬ | Requires OT background (Ezekiel 34, Psalm 23) absent for readers with low OT literacy. | Background teaching note; emphasize voluntary self-giving. |
| Resurrection and the life (11:25) | ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನವೂ ಜೀವವೂ | Reuses baseline ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ; see §1.7 for resurrection risk. | Never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. |
| Way, truth, and life (14:6) | ಮಾರ್ಗವೂ ಸತ್ಯವೂ ಜೀವವೂ | ಮಾರ್ಗ collides with the deeply respected Kannada religious-philosophical category of multiple honored mārga (bhakti-mārga, jñāna-mārga, karma-mārga) — the single highest-risk ambiguity outside the core passage. | The exclusivity clause (“no one comes to the Father except through me”) must be rendered without softening despite this cultural sensitivity. Mandatory translator note. |
| True vine (15:1,5) | ನಿಜವಾದ ದ್ರಾಕ್ಷಾಲತೆ | Requires OT background (Israel-as-vine, Psalm 80, Isaiah 5, Jeremiah 2). | Background teaching note. |
1.7 The Holy Spirit as Counselor
| Available Kannada term(s) | Weakness / collision | Recommended strategy |
|---|
| ಸಹಾಯಕನಾದ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ (Paraclete) | Two distinct collision risks: (1) an unpaired ಸಹಾಯಕ alone risks reduction to a guru-like advisor role; (2) an unqualified “spirit-helper” framing risks resonance with coastal-Karnataka Tulunadu Bhuta Kola folk religion, where ಭೂತ spirits are propitiated as subordinate intermediary helper-beings. | Never use ಸಹಾಯಕ unpaired; always attach ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ so the Paraclete is unmistakably the third Person of the one Godhead, not a subordinate spirit-intermediary or advisory guru. |
| ಸತ್ಯದ ಆತ್ಮ (Spirit of truth) | Same ಆತ್ಮ/ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ risk as Holy Spirit generally. | Always pair with ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ for referent clarity. |
| ಬಯಲಿಗೆ ತರುವುದು / ಮನದಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡುವುದು (convict, 16:8; cf. 3:20) | Risk of inconsistent rendering breaking the Christ-light / Spirit-conviction continuity John builds across the Gospel. | Render identically at 3:20 and 16:8. |
1.8 Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
| Available Kannada term(s) | Weakness / collision | Recommended strategy |
|---|
| ದೇವರ ಕುರಿಮರಿ (Lamb of God, 1:29,36) | Risk of reduction to a gentleness metaphor, losing the Passover/Isaiah 53 sacrificial background. | Teaching note on Passover typology and Isaiah 53; sin-bearing, sacrificial category required. |
| ಒಬ್ಬನು ಜನರಿಗೋಸ್ಕರ ಸಾಯುವುದು (11:49-52) | The Greek ὑπέρ (“on behalf of / in place of”) can be flattened to mere general benefit in a loose Kannada rendering. | Use -ಗೋಸ್ಕರ / -ಪರವಾಗಿ constructions to preserve substitutionary force explicitly. |
| ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವುದು (lay down life, 10:11,15,17-18) | Risk of reading as accidental death or generic martyrdom parallel to other religious martyr-figures. | Emphasize voluntary self-giving (“of my own accord,” 10:18). |
| ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಯಿತು (it is finished, 19:30) | Risk of being read alongside the incremental, stage-by-stage self-effort of the Lingayat shatsthala path toward Aikya, where standing before the divine is progressively achieved rather than declared finished at one moment. | Anchor as completed, once-for-all finality; contrast explicitly with incremental-attainment vocabulary. Mandatory translator note. |
| ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ (resurrection) | Baseline-established; NEVER ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. | Reuse exactly across all occurrences (5:29; 11:24-25; 20). |
| ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೆ ಎತ್ತಲ್ಪಡುವುದು (lifted up, 3:14; 8:28; 12:32-34) | No single Kannada expression naturally carries both “physically raised on a cross” and “exalted/glorified” simultaneously; a translator working segment-by-segment could easily lose the double meaning at one of the three occurrences, breaking the developing Johannine motif. | Use identically at all three occurrences; mandatory translator note at first occurrence (3:14) explaining the double sense. |
| ಸರ್ಪ (serpent, 3:14) | Collision with regional Nagaradhane (serpent-worship) folk-religious practice, prominent in Karnataka village religion. | Teaching/footnote supplying the Numbers 21 background; this serpent is a historical OT sign-object, not an object of veneration. |
1.9 Unity of the Father and the Son
| Available Kannada term(s) | Weakness / collision | Recommended strategy |
|---|
| ನಾನೂ ತಂದೆಯೂ ಒಂದೇ (10:30) | The single highest-stakes syncretism risk in the entire book: this is the natural verse a Lingayat-background reader will map onto the Veerashaiva Aikya doctrine — the culminating stage of the shatsthala path in which a devotee’s individual identity ultimately dissolves into and merges with Shiva. | Mandatory translator note distinguishing eternal, already-existing unity of two eternally distinct Persons from a culminating spiritual achievement or identity-dissolution. This distinction must be non-negotiable and repeated at every occurrence of unity language in the book (5:18; 10:30; 14:9; 17:11,21-23). |
| ನನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದವನು ತಂದೆಯನ್ನೇ ನೋಡಿದ್ದಾನೆ (14:9) | Risk of softening to “has seen what the Father is like” by mere analogy or resemblance. | Preserve full, personal revelation-of-being force. |
| ತಂದೆಯನ್ನು ಸನ್ಮಾನಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಗನನ್ನೂ ಸನ್ಮಾನಿಸಬೇಕು (5:23) | Risk of softening the καθώς (“just as”) to mere “similar” honor. | Preserve exact equivalence of honor. |
| ಅವರು ಒಂದಾಗಿರಬೇಕು, ನಾವು ಒಂದಾಗಿರುವಂತೆಯೇ (17:11,21-23) | Believers’ Spirit-given unity, modeled on the Father-Son unity, is at even greater risk of Aikya-collapse than 10:30, since it explicitly extends “oneness” language to redeemed humans. | Explicit note: believers’ unity is relational, moral, Spirit-given, and modeled on — but categorically distinct from — the Father-Son’s essential unity; each believer remains personally, eternally distinct, never merged/dissolved. |
2. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods
2.1 Missing / Underdeveloped Vocabulary
These concepts have no natural, pre-existing single-word Kannada equivalent and require compound coinage, paraphrase, or explanatory apparatus rather than a one-to-one lexical match:
| Concept | Gap | Solution adopted |
|---|
| μονογενής (unique, one-of-a-kind Sonship) | No single Kannada word conveys “only of its kind” combined with filial relationship. | Compound ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ, always paired with ದೇವರ ಮಗ. |
| ὑψόω double sense (crucifixion = exaltation) | No Kannada verb naturally carries both senses simultaneously. | Paraphrase ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೆ ಎತ್ತಲ್ಪಡುವುದು + mandatory explanatory note. |
| ἐγώ εἰμι absolute (timeless self-existence) | Kannada tense system does not naturally mark this claim without added words. | ನಾನೇ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ, with explicit tense-contrast note against Abraham’s past “was.” |
| πνεῦμα/πνεῖ wordplay (wind/Spirit pun) | No Kannada word-pair reproduces the Greek pun. | Split rendering (ಗಾಳಿ / ಆತ್ಮ) with explanatory clause; pun flagged as untranslatable rather than forced. |
| Παράκλητος (advocate/comforter/counselor composite sense) | No single Kannada word spans legal-advocate, comforter, and teacher senses simultaneously. | Compound ಸಹಾಯಕನಾದ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, always with explanatory teaching material at first occurrence. |
| ζωὴ αἰώνιος as present-possessed relational knowledge (not mere unending duration, per 17:3) | ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ by itself reads primarily as “eternal duration,” under-conveying the relational-knowledge content John gives it. | Always teach alongside 17:3’s own definition; do not let the compound stand as a bare durational claim. |
| τετέλεσται’s forensic finality (a completed legal/sacrificial transaction, not merely “the end”) | ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಯಿತು conveys completion but not automatically the legal/sacrificial “it is paid in full” nuance. | Supplement with teaching note contrasting finished-once-for-all atonement against incremental self-effort frameworks. |
2.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods (require active fencing)
These Kannada words already carry other well-established, prestigious religious meanings in Karnataka’s dominant traditions and must be actively “fenced” — via context, pairing, or translator notes — so they are not silently absorbed into those competing frameworks:
| Kannada term | Competing occupant of the semantic space | Fencing strategy |
|---|
| ಲೋಕ (world/kosmos) | Hindu cosmological “loka” realms (bhūloka, devaloka); māyā (illusory phenomenal world) | Anchor as the real, created, fallen-but-loved object of God’s action; never framed as illusory or to-be-transcended. |
| ಆತ್ಮ / ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ | Vedantic individual soul / impersonal Universal Self | ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ is the only permitted rendering for the Holy Spirit; ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ is forbidden absolutely. |
| ಜೀವ (as root of ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ) | The embodied soul (jīva) bound in samsara, seeking moksha | Never present ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ as liberation of the jiva; anchor relationally via John 17:3. |
| ಸತ್ಯ (truth) | Vedantic Sat/Satya as an impersonal metaphysical absolute (part of Sat-Chit-Ananda) | Anchor as truth personally embodied and exclusively revealed in Christ (14:6), not an abstract principle any seeker independently accesses. |
| ಮಾರ್ಗ (way/path) | Bhakti-mārga, jñāna-mārga, karma-mārga — Karnataka’s respected plural “paths” tradition | Preserve 14:6’s exclusivity clause without softening despite this collision; mandatory translator note. |
| ದಾಸ (servant) | The celebrated Haridasa bhakti self-designation (Purandara Dasa, Kanaka Dasa tradition) | Frame 15:14-15 as Christ granting relational deepening (disclosure of purposes), not devaluing devoted service as such. |
| ಗುರು / ಸ್ವಾಮಿ | Guru-devotee relationship; Lingayat ಜಂಗಮ wandering-teacher office | Already fenced in baseline for apostle/lord; extend fence to ರಬ್ಬಿ (retain transliteration, never ಗುರುವೇ) and to ಸಹಾಯಕ (Paraclete, never standalone). |
| ಶಕ್ತಿ (power) | Karnataka’s prominent Shakta tradition (Chamundeshwari, Mysore) | Baseline fence (ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ only) carries over to all John “power” contexts (signs narratives, 2:11; 9:3; 11:40). |
| ಅವತಾರ | Avatar theology (Haridasa Krishna-bhakti, centered at Udupi) | Baseline fence (ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ only) carries over; extend to μονογενής and messianic-promise contexts. |
| ಐಕ್ಯ / ಪರಶಿವ | Lingayat/Veerashaiva final merger-with-Shiva doctrine | The single most acute fence in the whole book; applies to salvation, resurrection, abide (μένω), and — most acutely — every Father-Son unity statement (5:18; 10:30; 14:9; 17:11,21-23). |
| ಸರ್ಪ (serpent) | Nagaradhane serpent-worship folk religion | Fence via Numbers 21 background note at 3:14; this is a historical OT sign-object, not a veneration-object. |
| ಗಳಿಗೆ (hour/time) | Muhurta astrological auspicious-timing calculation, culturally prominent in Kannada religious life | Fence “the hour” (2:4; 7:30; 8:20; 12:23,27; 13:1; 17:1) against astrological framing; this is God’s own sovereign appointment, not a calculated auspicious moment. |
| ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ | Reincarnation/rebirth within samsara — the single most dangerous default-reach word in this curriculum | Absolutely forbidden for born-again (3:3-8) AND for resurrection (ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ only). Extend the baseline Romans forbidden-substitution rule explicitly to John’s new-birth material, since ch.3 is the core passage and the risk of a translator’s habitual reach for ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ is highest here. |
3. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Category | Decision | Examples | Rationale |
|---|
| Proper names (persons, places) | Transliterate, per established Kannada Bible convention | ನಿಕೊದೇಮ (Nicodemus), ಲಾಜರ (Lazarus), ತೋಮ (Thomas), ಪಿಲಾತ (Pilate), ಕಾಯಫ (Caiaphas), ಬೇಥಾನ್ಯ (Bethany), ಸಮಾರ್ಯ (Samaria) | Established convention; no doctrinal content at stake in the name-form itself. |
| Titles with a genuinely untranslatable technical sense | Transliterate | ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯ (Messiah, baseline); ರಬ್ಬಿ (Rabbi) | ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯ is already fixed in baseline. ರಬ್ಬಿ is deliberately transliterated rather than rendered ಗುರುವೇ, to avoid importing self-attained guru status — the Kannada reader is meant to sense a foreign, historically specific address whose inadequacy as a category for Jesus is part of John’s narrative point. |
| Theological exclamations | Transliterate (baseline) | ಆಮೆನ್, ಹಲ್ಲೆಲೂಯಾ | Established Kannada Christian convention. |
| Core doctrinal terms with rich compound content | Paraphrase/compound, never transliterate | ವಾಕ್ಯ (Logos, not “ಲೋಗೋಸ್”); ಸಹಾಯಕನಾದ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ (Paraclete, not “ಪ್ಯಾರಾಕ್ಲೀಟ್”); ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ (monogenēs) | A bare transliteration would be theologically opaque to a Kannada reader and would forfeit the chance to actively displace a competing native term (e.g., ಅವತಾರ, ಗುರು) with a doctrinally precise compound. Paraphrase lets the fencing work happen inside the term itself. |
| The seven “I Am” statement predicates | Paraphrase (full descriptive Kannada phrase), never abbreviated | ಜೀವದ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ; ಲೋಕದ ಬೆಳಕು; ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕುರುಬ; ಮಾರ್ಗವೂ ಸತ್ಯವೂ ಜೀವವೂ; ನಿಜವಾದ ದ್ರಾಕ್ಷಾಲತೆ | These are self-descriptions built from ordinary Kannada nouns already carrying OT-background weight (bread, light, shepherd, way, vine); transliteration is neither possible nor desirable — the vividness of the concrete image is precisely what must be preserved. |
| Hybrid case: divine self-existence formula | Neither transliteration nor simple paraphrase; a constructed Kannada phrase preserving Greek tense logic | ನಾನೇ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ (ἐγώ εἰμι absolute, 8:58) | A literal transliteration (“ಎಗೋ ಐಮಿ”) would be meaningless to readers; a loose paraphrase (“ನಾನಿದ್ದೇನೆ,” “I am/exist”) loses the timeless-present force against Abraham’s simple past. The chosen construction is a deliberate compromise requiring a mandatory translator note. |
| Hybrid case: untranslatable wordplay | Neither transliteration nor forced pun; split rendering with note | ಗಾಳಿ / ಆತ್ಮ (πνεῦμα/πνεῖ, 3:8) | Attempting to invent an artificial Kannada pun would create a confusing neologism; splitting the rendering and flagging the loss via footnote is the honest solution. |
4. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities
Ranked by combined weight of (a) doctrinal centrality to this curriculum’s nine named doctrines, (b) severity of potential syncretism with Karnataka’s dominant religious traditions, (c) frequency/prominence in the book, and (d) proximity to the core passage (John 3:1-21).
- ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν / believer-unity statements (10:30; 17:11,21-23) — the single highest risk in the entire curriculum. Directly names the doctrine “Unity of the Father and the Son” and is the most natural verse in the whole Gospel for a Lingayat-background reader to silently reinterpret through Aikya-merger categories.
- γεννηθῆναι ἄνωθεν (John 3:3,5,7 — core passage) — the central verb of the core passage’s central doctrine (New Birth); ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ is the default reach-word in ordinary Kannada and its intrusion here would invert the entire doctrine into a rebirth-cycle claim.
- λόγος (1:1,14) — foundational to the Deity/Pre-existence doctrine for the whole book; Vāc/Śabda-Brahman collision risks readers “already having” this concept apart from Christ personally.
- μονογενής (John 3:16 — core passage) — sits inside the core passage’s best-known verse; avatar/Sharana-attainment collision directly undermines unique, exclusive Sonship at the curriculum’s most-quoted verse.
- πνεῦμα/πνεῖ wordplay (John 3:8 — core passage) — untranslatable pun at the heart of the New Birth doctrine; mishandling risks obscuring the Spirit’s sovereign, mysterious agency altogether.
- ὑψόω (John 3:14 — core passage, echoed 8:28; 12:32-34) — the crucifixion-as-exaltation double meaning is a load-bearing motif across three chapters; losing consistency at any one occurrence (starting in the core passage) breaks the thread.
- ζωὴ αἰώνιος (John 3:15-16 — core passage; also 17:3) — jiva/moksha collision at the doctrine of Eternal Life; risk that ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವ reads as durational rather than relational.
- κόσμος (John 3:16-17 — core passage) — māyā/loka collision at the doctrine of God’s Love for the World, in the verse most likely to be memorized and quoted independent of context.
- κρίσις / φῶς-σκότος cluster (John 3:18-21 — core passage) — karma/avidya collision at the doctrine of Judgment and Belief/Unbelief, immediately following 3:16 and therefore inheriting its high visibility.
- ἐγώ εἰμι absolute (8:58) — the clearest single claim to Christ’s deity in the Gospel outside the core passage; tense-preservation is non-negotiable and easily lost.
- ὁ Παράκλητος (14:16,26; 15:26; 16:7) — governs the entire “Holy Spirit as Counselor” doctrine; dual collision risk (guru-advisor / Bhuta Kola spirit-intermediary) makes this the highest-risk pneumatological term.
- ἡ ὁδὸς καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια καὶ ἡ ζωή (14:6) — the sharpest exclusivity claim in the book set against Karnataka’s genuinely respected plural-mārga religious vocabulary.
- τετέλεσται (19:30) — governs the doctrine of Christ’s Substitutionary Death; risk of assimilation to incremental shatsthala-style attainment rather than a completed, declared-finished transaction.
- ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ (John 3:36 — core passage extension) — immediately follows the core passage; personal-wrath vs. impersonal-karma collision at a verse often taught alongside 3:16.
- σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου / σῴζω (John 3:17; 4:42) — universal-scope salvation language sitting directly beside the moksha/mukti/aikya forbidden-substitution risk already flagged as Critical in the baseline.
- ὄφις (John 3:14 — core passage) — Nagaradhane serpent-worship collision embedded in the core passage’s typological argument; requires background apparatus most translators will be tempted to skip.
- δοῦλοι / φίλοι (15:14-15) — Haridasa dasa-identity collision; risk of implying Christ devalues a self-designation treasured across an entire regional devotional tradition.
- ἀγαπάω (John 3:16 — core passage; throughout) — bhakti-prema exchange-direction collision; risk of silently reversing who initiates love toward whom.
- ὕδωρ (John 3:5 — core passage) — ritual-bathing collision at the doctrine of New Birth; risk of resolving Water/Spirit ambiguity prematurely into mere ritual cleansing.
- βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ (John 3:3,5 — core passage) — lower absolute risk (baseline-established rendering already fences the political/territorial misreading), but retains elevated risk in ch.3 specifically because it is here tied to the exclusive condition of new birth, a linkage not present in the Romans baseline and therefore not yet doctrinally reinforced for this curriculum.
5. Recommendations for Subsequent Phase 1 Steps
- Every term in §1’s doctrine matrix and every item in the ranked ambiguity list (§4) must receive a formal entry in the updated
translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json, following the schema already used for the John-specific entries drafted in assets/bible_term_registry.json.
- Items flagged “mandatory translator note” throughout this document must be cross-checked against the Section 3 list in
analysis/08_core_glossary.md and merged into a single authoritative first-occurrence note list before Phase 2 begins.
- The forbidden-substitution list in
12_ai_translation_requirements.md must be extended for this curriculum to explicitly name ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ as forbidden for born-again/new-birth language (John 3), not only for resurrection — this is a book-specific extension the Romans baseline did not need to make explicit, since Romans has no new-birth pericope of comparable weight.
- The doctrine risk registry update (Phase 1 Step 6 output) should propagate the “Aikya-merger” caution to every believer-directed unity/abiding passage (14:20; 15:4; 17:11,21-23), not only to the Father-Son unity texts, since §1.9 and §4 rank #1 identify this as the single highest cumulative risk across the whole book.
- Native speaker review should specifically pilot-test the ಮಾರ್ಗ rendering at 14:6 and the ದಾಸ/ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ contrast at 15:14-15 with readers from both Haridasa-bhakti and Lingayat backgrounds, given the genuine cultural prestige of the competing categories identified in §2.2.
This is a Phase 1, Step 8 deliverable. It must be read alongside analysis/08_core_glossary.md, the extended assets/bible_term_registry.json, and the baseline Romans Language Package, and incorporated into the updated translation_memory.json before Phase 2 translation begins.
