Semantic Analysis

07 — Semantic Analysis: 1 Thessalonians (Full Book, Koine Greek)

Method and Scope

This document analyzes 1 Thessalonians in its original Koine Greek across all five chapters. The core passage (4:13-18) receives full verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing term. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level study covering its load-bearing theological vocabulary with the same analytical fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Kannada) rendering risk.

Per program mandate, any term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json is reused exactly as recorded there; this is noted at each occurrence as “(baseline reuse — see Romans TM).” New terms required by this curriculum’s five doctrines (especially the eschatological vocabulary of 4:13-5:11, which Romans does not require) are analyzed fresh and proposed for extension of the language package in Step 8 (08_core_glossary.md).

PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

4:13 — “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningKannada rendering risk
brothersἀδελφοίadelphoisiblings, brothersblood siblings; fellow believers in the covenant family”brothers,” “brothers and sisters,” “brethren”Address to the whole believing community as family under one FatherLow. Render ಸಹೋದರರೇ (sahōdararē). Standard Kannada Christian address form; no collision risk.
asleep (fallen asleep)κοιμωμένων (κοιμάομαι)koimōmenōn (koimaomai)to sleep, to fall asleepLiteral sleep; euphemism throughout NT for the death of believers, chosen precisely because it implies a temporary state ended by waking”asleep,” “fallen asleep,” “dead”Believers who have died are not annihilated or endlessly cycling; their state is temporary, pending a certain waking (resurrection)High. Kannada rendering ನಿದ್ದೆಹೋದವರು/ನಿದ್ರೆಹೋದವರು (nidrehōdavaru, “those who have gone to sleep”) is the natural euphemism, but must be anchored tightly to the resurrection hope stated in the same sentence, or a Kannada reader may hear only a generic softening of death (as in many cultures) without the specific NT content: a temporary state with a guaranteed, embodied waking at Christ’s return — not soul-sleep as a doctrine in itself, and not an interval of transmigration awaiting a next rebirth.
grieveλυπῆσθε (λυπέω)lypēsthe (lypeō)to be grieved, sorrowful, distressedOrdinary grief/sorrow; here specifically grief over death”grieve,” “sorrow,” “mourn”Grief itself is not forbidden (Paul assumes believers will grieve); what is forbidden is grieving as those who have no hopeMedium. Render ದುಃಖಿಸಬಾರದು (duḥkhisabāradu, “should not grieve/sorrow”). Care needed so the phrase does not sound like a command to suppress emotion; it qualifies the kind of grief, not its presence — central to the “Hope in Grief” doctrine.
others who have no hopeοἱ λοιποὶ οἱ μὴ ἔχοντες ἐλπίδαhoi loipoi hoi mē echontes elpida”the rest, the ones not having hope”Refers to the pagan Greco-Roman world generally, whose funerary inscriptions and philosophy largely expressed resignation or uncertainty about any afterlife of restored personal existence”the rest, who have no hope,” “others who have no hope”Sets up the contrast that grounds the whole passage: believers’ grief is shaped by a certain hope others lackHigh (see “hope” below). ಆಶಾಭಾವನೆ ಇಲ್ಲದವರು / ಭರವಸೆ ಇಲ್ಲದವರು (bharavase illadavaru).
hopeἐλπίδα (ἐλπίς)elpida (elpis)expectation, hopeIn secular Greek, a neutral word for expectation (can be good or bad); in NT usage, a confident forward-looking certainty grounded in God’s promise and Christ’s resurrection, not a wish”hope,” “expectation”The believer’s hope is not optimism but a certainty anchored in a historical event (Christ’s resurrection, v.14)High — new term, not in Romans baseline (Romans uses ῥοπε constructs differently; ἐλπίς itself does not appear as a standalone glossary entry in the Romans TM). Proposed Kannada: ಭರವಸೆ (bharavase). Risk: Kannada readers from Hindu, Haridasa-bhakti, or Lingayat backgrounds are accustomed to future-orientation expressed through karma-outcome expectation, rebirth destiny, or progressive attainment toward mokṣa/mukti/Aikya — none of which is a certainty grounded in a past, verifiable, bodily resurrection. ಭರವಸೆ must be anchored contextually (as here, tied explicitly to Christ’s resurrection) so it is not heard as generic optimism or fatalistic ಹಣೆಬರಹ-style destiny language (already flagged as forbidden for “calling/election” in the Romans package; the same caution applies here for “hope”).

4:14 — “For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.”

believeπιστεύομεν (πιστεύω)pisteuomen (pisteuō)to trust, have faith inPersonal trust placed in a specific object/person, not generic belief-that”believe,” “have faith”The verbal form of ನಂಬಿಕೆ (faith), the ground of the whole argumentLow — baseline reuse. Verb form of ನಂಬಿಕೆ (nambike); render ನಂಬುತ್ತೇವೆ (nambuttēve). Same High-risk doctrinal boundary as Romans ನಂಬಿಕೆ entry applies: must retain Christ as the specific, exclusive object of trust, not devotional surrender (ಭಕ್ತಿ) toward a chosen personal deity.
diedἀπέθανεν (ἀποθνῄσκω)apethanen (apothnēskō)to dieOrdinary death; here Christ’s actual, historical death”died”Christ’s real, historical death is the presupposition for the real, historical resurrection that followsLow. ಸತ್ತನು/ಮರಣಹೊಂದಿದನು. No major collision; must remain a real, one-time, historical death (not one of repeated avatar-appearances-and-departures).
rose againἀνέστη (ἀνίστημι)anestē (anistēmi)stood up again, roseCognate action-verb of the noun ἀνάστασις (“resurrection”); a one-time, historical, bodily rising from death”rose,” “rose again,” “was raised”Christ’s bodily resurrection is the anchor and pattern for believers’ own future resurrection (v.16)Critical — baseline reuse. Must be rendered so as to invoke ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ (punarutthāna, the fixed Romans-baseline noun for “resurrection”), e.g. ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ ಹೊಂದಿದನು/ಎದ್ದನು, and never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (rebirth). This is the doctrinal hinge of the entire passage: because Christ’s resurrection is a one-time, bodily, historical event that permanently ended his death, believers’ future resurrection (v.16) is guaranteed as the same kind of event, not another turn of a rebirth cycle.
through Jesusδιὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦdia tou Iēsouthrough JesusInstrumental/agency preposition marking Jesus as the means by which God will act”through Jesus”God’s future act of resurrection/gathering is mediated through Jesus specificallyLow — baseline reuse (ಯೇಸು).
God will bring with himὁ θεὸς ἄξει σὺν αὐτῷho theos axei syn autōGod will lead/bring together with himἄξει (from ἄγω, “to lead/bring”) — a purposive, personal action of God bringing the dead along with Christ at his return”God will bring with him,” “God will bring… with Jesus”God himself, personally and purposively, will reunite the dead-in-Christ with the living at Christ’s return — a personal act of the sovereign God, not an impersonal cosmic mechanismHigh. ದೇವರು ಅವನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬರುವನು. Must retain personal agency of ದೇವರು (God) acting purposively — resonates with, but must be kept distinct from, ದೇವರ ಪರಿಪಾಲನೆ (Providence) already flagged in the Romans package as vulnerable to being absorbed into ಹಣೆಬರಹ (fatalism) or impersonal karmic law.
those who have fallen asleepτοὺς κοιμηθένταςtous koimēthentasthose who have been put to sleep / have sleptSame euphemism as v.13, aorist passive participle”those who have fallen asleep,” “the dead”See v.13See v.13.

4:15 — “For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningKannada rendering risk
a word from the Lordλόγῳ κυρίουlogō kyrioua/the word of the LordEither a direct dominical saying or a Spirit-given prophetic word to Paul; claims direct revelatory authority”a word from the Lord,” “the Lord’s own word,” “the word of the Lord”Grounds the entire eschatological teaching in direct divine revelation, not human speculation — relevant to the Inspiration of Scripture doctrine carried over from the Romans packageHigh. ಕರ್ತನ ವಾಕ್ಯ (Kartana vākya). Distinguish from the vachana literature of the Sharana poet-saints or Haridasa devotional compositions (kirtane) — both genuinely revered in Karnataka as inspired religious insight, but categorically different from a claim to direct, authoritative revelation from the Lord himself (parallel to the Romans package’s “Inspiration of Scripture” doctrine note).
we who are alive, who are leftἡμεῖς οἱ ζῶντες οἱ περιλειπόμενοιhēmeis hoi zōntes hoi perileipomenoi”we, the living, the ones remaining”περιλειπόμενοι, a rare NT verb, “to be left remaining/surviving""we who are alive, who are left,” “we who are still alive”Paul includes himself among those who might be alive at Christ’s return — emphasizes imminence without specifying a dateMedium. ಜೀವಂತವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿದಿರುವ ನಾವು. No major syncretism risk; care needed to avoid implying a fixed predicted date.
the coming of the Lordτὴν παρουσίαν τοῦ κυρίουtēn parousian tou kyriou”the presence/arrival of the Lord”παρουσία in secular Greek = the arrival/visit of a king or dignitary, often with the technical sense of a formal state-visit; in NT usage, the technical term for Christ’s future visible, personal, bodily return”the coming,” “the arrival,” “the Parousia,” “the Second Coming”Central term for the doctrine “The Return of Christ.” Names a single, future, visible, bodily, personal event — not a symbolic “presence,” not a repeatable manifestationCritical — new term, not present in Romans baseline (Romans never required this eschatological term). Proposed Kannada: ಪುನರಾಗಮನ (punarāgamana, “return/coming again”), the established Kannada Christian phrase for the Second Coming (ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಪುನರಾಗಮನ). Flag: the prefix ಪುನರ್- (“again”) in ಪುನರಾಗಮನ is the same prefix forbidden in ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (“rebirth,” forbidden for “resurrection” in the Romans package). Although ಪುನರಾಗಮನ is the standard, long-established Kannada Christian term and should be retained, translators and reviewers must ensure by context/apposition (e.g., “ಕರ್ತನಾದ ಯೇಸು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನು ಶರೀರಧಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಪುನಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷನಾಗುವ ಪುನರಾಗಮನ” — “the Parousia in which the Lord Jesus Christ will appear again in bodily form”) that hearers do not subconsciously assimilate “coming again” to the cyclical “born again” pattern of ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. This is a one-time, final, visible return of one unique person, not a repeatable cycle.
will not precedeοὐ μὴ φθάσωμεν (φθάνω)ou mē phthasōmen (phthanō)will by no means precede/arrive beforeTo arrive first, get ahead of”will not precede,” “will not go before,” “will have no advantage over”Corrects a Thessalonian anxiety that those who died before the Parousia might miss out on, or be disadvantaged relative to, the livingLow. ಮುಂದಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ / ಮೊದಲು ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. No major risk.

4:16 — “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningKannada rendering risk
the Lord himselfαὐτὸς ὁ κύριοςautos ho kyriosthe Lord himselfEmphatic pronoun stresses personal, direct action — not an angel or intermediary”the Lord himself”Christ’s return is his own direct, personal act; no intermediary substitutes for himCritical — baseline reuse (ಕರ್ತ). ಕರ್ತನು ತಾನೇ. Must retain the exclusive, personal, presently-reigning sovereign sense fixed in the Romans package; must not be softened toward a devotee’s eventual merging with an impersonal or intermediary divine presence (Aikya).
will descendκαταβήσεται (καταβαίνω)katabēsetai (katabainō)will come downOrdinary verb of downward movement; here of Christ’s visible, bodily descent from heaven”will descend,” “will come down”A visible, spatial, bodily movement of the Lord himself — concrete and public, not a private mystical experienceMedium. ಇಳಿದುಬರುವನು (iḷidubaruvanu). Should retain the concrete, bodily, visible sense against any drift toward purely inward/mystical “descent” imagery familiar from bhakti devotional poetry.
a cry of commandἐν κελεύσματιen keleusmatiwith a shout of commandA military/naval term for a commanding shout that orders troops or rowers into action”a cry of command,” “a shout,” “a commanding shout”Depicts Christ’s return as a sovereign’s command that summons and mobilizes — royal, authoritative imageryMedium. ಆಜ್ಞಾಘೋಷದೊಂದಿಗೆ (ājñāghōṣadondige).
the voice of an archangelφωνῇ ἀρχαγγέλουphōnē archangelouwith an archangel’s voiceἀρχάγγελος, “chief/ruling angel” — occurs only here and Jude 9 (of Michael) in the NT”the voice of an archangel,” “an archangel’s voice”Heavenly, angelic accompaniment to Christ’s return; angels here are created servants, not objects of worshipMedium. ಪ್ರಧಾನ ದೂತನ ಧ್ವನಿ (pradhāna dūtana dhvani). Must keep archangel as a created being under Christ’s command, not a semi-divine intercessory figure comparable to venerated saints/deities in popular devotion.
the trumpet of Godσάλπιγγι θεοῦsalpingi theouwith God’s trumpetσάλπιγξ = trumpet/horn, used in OT for covenant assemblies, war-signals, and theophany (e.g., Sinai)“the trumpet of God,” “the last trumpet” (cf. 1 Cor 15:52)A public, unmistakable, universally-heard signal announcing the Lord’s arrival — no ambiguity, no privacyMedium. ದೇವರ ತುತ್ತೂರಿಯ ಶಬ್ದ (Dēvara tuttūriya śabda). ತುತ್ತೂರಿ is the standard Kannada Bible term for a trumpet/ram’s-horn instrument; low ambiguity.
the dead in Christοἱ νεκροὶ ἐν Χριστῷhoi nekroi en Christōthe dead ones in ChristBelievers who have died while united to Christ — a subset (not all the dead in general)“the dead in Christ,” “those who died in Christ,” “Christian dead”Union with Christ persists even through death; being “in Christ” is not broken by dyingHigh. ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಮರಣಹೊಂದಿದವರು. Connects to the Romans-package doctrine “Christian Identity in Christ” (union with Christ as a distinct person in ongoing relationship, not dissolution of identity) — critical to state that union persists through, and is not broken by, physical death.
will rise firstἀναστήσονται πρῶτονanastēsontai prōtonwill stand up/rise firstFuture middle of ἀνίστημι, cognate with ἀνάστασις”will rise first,” “will be raised first”The order of events: the dead in Christ are raised before the living are transformed/caught up — answers the Thessalonians’ anxiety directlyCritical — baseline reuse. ಮೊದಲು ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ ಹೊಂದುವರು. Same forbidden-substitution rule as Romans: never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. This is the doctrinal center of “Resurrection of Believers”: a real, future, bodily, one-time event patterned exactly on Christ’s own resurrection (v.14), not a further turn in an ongoing cycle of rebirth, and not dissolution into an impersonal absolute.

4:17 — “Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningKannada rendering risk
will be caught upἁρπαγησόμεθα (ἁρπάζω)harpagēsometha (harpazō)will be seized/snatched/carried off forcefullyἁρπάζω denotes a sudden, forceful, decisive seizing — used elsewhere of a wolf seizing sheep (John 10:12), Paul “caught up” to the third heaven (2 Cor 12:2-4), Philip “snatched away” (Acts 8:39)“will be caught up,” “will be snatched up,” “will be raptured” (source of the theological term “the Rapture”)God’s own decisive, sovereign act of gathering living believers bodily to meet Christ — sudden, God-initiated, not a gradual spiritual ascent achieved by the believer’s own discipline or meritCritical — new term, central to “The Return of Christ” and “Resurrection of Believers.” Proposed Kannada: ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೆ ಎತ್ತಲ್ಪಡುವೆವು (mēlakke ettalpaḍuvevu, “we will be lifted/taken up”) or ಮೇಘಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಯ್ಯಲ್ಪಡುವೆವು. Flag: must not be assimilated to (a) yogic siddhi traditions of levitation/bodily transcendence achieved through disciplined practice, or (b) the Veerashaiva Aikya picture of a devotee’s progressive spiritual ascent culminating in merger with, and loss of distinct identity in, the divine. This is a sudden, God-initiated, bodily event that preserves the believer’s distinct identity in ongoing relationship with the still-distinct, still-personal Lord — the same distinction the Romans package draws for “salvation” and “lordship of christ.”
together with themἅμα σὺν αὐτοῖςhama syn autoisat the same time, together with themEmphasizes simultaneity — living and previously-dead believers unite in one single event”together with them,” “together”The living and the resurrected dead are united as one body at one moment — no separate classes of believersLow. ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ.
in the cloudsἐν νεφέλαιςen nephelaisin/among cloudsClouds are standard OT theophany imagery (Exodus, Daniel 7:13, Christ’s ascension in Acts 1:9 and predicted return in Acts 1:11)“in the clouds,” “on the clouds”Divine, theophanic transportation — echoes Christ’s own ascension and anticipated return “in the same way” (Acts 1:11)Medium. ಮೋಡಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (mōḍagaḷalli). Low collision risk; may be paired with a brief note connecting to Acts 1:9-11 for readers with low OT/apostolic narrative literacy.
to meet the Lordεἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ κυρίουeis apantēsin tou kyrioufor a meeting/encounter with the Lordἀπάντησις was a technical term for a delegation of citizens going out from a city to formally welcome/escort an arriving dignitary back into the city”to meet the Lord,” “to welcome the Lord”Believers go out to escort the returning King back — not simply to view him passing by; implies the King’s arrival culminates somewhere (his full, public, visible reign), not that believers are removed permanently from the world into an abstract heavenHigh. ಕರ್ತನನ್ನು ಸಂಧಿಸಲು (Kartanannu sandhisalu). Recommend a translator note surfacing the “welcoming delegation” background so ಸಂಧಿಸು is not flattened to a merely private, individual encounter, losing the corporate, royal-welcome dimension.
in the airεἰς ἀέραeis aerainto/in the airThe lower atmosphere, contrasted with “heaven” proper; in ancient cosmology, understood as Satan’s contested domain (cf. Eph 2:2, “prince of the power of the air”)“in the air”The meeting occurs in the very space previously under hostile/contested power — Christ’s authority is asserted precisely thereMedium/Low. ಆಕಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ (ākāśadalli) or ವಾಯುಮಂಡಲದಲ್ಲಿ. No major syncretism risk on its own; note is chiefly exegetical.
we will always be with the Lordπάντοτε σὺν κυρίῳ ἐσόμεθαpantote syn kyriō esomethawe will always be together-with [the] Lordσύν (“with, together with”) stresses ongoing, permanent, relational togetherness — proximity in relationship, not merger of being”we will always be with the Lord,” “we will be with the Lord forever”The believer’s eternal destiny is permanent, conscious, relational nearness to a still-personal, still-distinct Lord — the capstone verse for both “Hope in Grief” and “The Return of Christ”Critical. ನಾವು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಕರ್ತನ ಸಂಗಡ ಇರುವೆವು. This is the single most important phrase in the passage to protect against Aikya-merger misreading: σύν (ಸಂಗಡ/ಜೊತೆ, “alongside/together with”) must be rendered so it clearly denotes an eternal relationship of two persons remaining distinct, in direct contrast to the Veerashaiva Aikya doctrine in which the devotee’s individual identity ultimately dissolves into Shiva. This is the same distinction the Romans package draws for “salvation,” “adoption,” and “lordship of Christ,” and it is the doctrinal climax of this whole passage.

4:18 — “Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

encourageπαρακαλεῖτε (παρακαλέω)parakaleite (parakaleō)call to one’s side; hence comfort, exhort, encourageBroad semantic range: entreat, exhort, comfort, encourage, depending on context”encourage,” “comfort,” “exhort”Here specifically: console grieving believers using the resurrection/Parousia teaching just given — the direct pastoral purpose of vv.13-17Low — baseline reuse. ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸಿರಿ (prōtsāhisiri), per the Romans package’s context-sensitive note (use ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹ for encouragement/building up, distinct from ವಿನಂತಿ for entreaty). Here the “comfort” sense is dominant given the grief context of v.13 — recommend pairing with ಸಂತೈಸಿರಿ (santaisiri, “comfort/console”) in translator notes if the Phase 2 team judges “ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸಿರಿ” alone reads too generically motivational for a grief context.
one anotherἀλλήλουςallēlouseach other, one anotherReciprocal pronoun; mutual action within the believing community”one another,” “each other”The resurrection hope is pastoral property to be actively shared within the church, not privately heldLow. ಒಬ್ಬರನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರು (obbarannobbaru).
with these wordsἐν τοῖς λόγοις τούτοιςen tois logois toutoiswith/by these wordsRefers back to the entire teaching of vv.13-17”with these words”The specific doctrinal content just given (not vague sentiment) is the substance of the comfortLow. ಈ ಮಾತುಗಳಿಂದ.

PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Chapter 1 — Thanksgiving, Election, and Turning from Idols

grace…peaceχάρις…εἰρήνηcharis…eirēnēfavor…peaceStandard Pauline salutation pairing”grace and peace”Combines Greek epistolary greeting (charis) with Hebrew shalom-greeting (eirēnē), reframed christologicallyLow/High — baseline reuse. ಕೃಪೆ …ಶಾಂತಿ, exactly as fixed in Romans TM.
thanksgiving (give thanks)εὐχαριστοῦμεν (εὐχαριστέω)eucharistoumen (eucharisteō)to give thanksGrateful acknowledgment of God’s goodness/work”we give thanks,” “we thank”Paul’s habitual thanksgiving for the church’s faith, love, hope-inspired workLow — baseline reuse (noun ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ; verb form ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ).
faith, love, hopeπίστις, ἀγάπη, ἐλπίςpistis, agapē, elpistrust, love, hopeThe Pauline triad; here as “work of faith,” “labor of love,” “steadfastness of hope""faith, love, and hope”Each virtue is described by its fruit (work, labor, endurance) — genuine faith/love/hope necessarily produce visible, costly actionHigh for πίστις (baseline reuse, ನಂಬಿಕೆ) and ἐλπίς (new term, see 4:13 above, ಭರವಸೆ); Low/Medium for ἀγάπη (new to this glossary but uncontested — ಪ್ರೀತಿ, prīti, standard).
work of faithἔργου τῆς πίστεωςergou tēs pisteōswork of the faithAction that faith produces”work of faith,” “faith’s work”Faith is never merely internal assent; it necessarily actsLow. ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯ.
labor of loveκόπου τῆς ἀγάπηςkopou tēs agapēslabor/toil of the loveCostly, wearying effort motivated by love”labor of love”Love that costs something, not sentiment aloneLow. ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಪ್ರಯಾಸ.
steadfastness of hopeὑπομονῆς τῆς ἐλπίδοςhypomonēs tēs elpidosendurance of the hopeὑπομονή = patient endurance under pressure”steadfastness of hope,” “patience of hope,” “endurance inspired by hope”Hope in Christ’s return sustains endurance through present suffering — directly links “Hope in Grief” to “The Return of Christ”Medium. ಭರವಸೆಯ ತಾಳ್ಮೆ/ಸಹನೆ.
election (chosen)ἐκλογήνeklogēna choosing-outGod’s sovereign, personal choice”election,” “God has chosen you”Their status as chosen rests on God’s initiative, not their own spiritual attainmentHigh — baseline reuse. ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ, exactly as fixed in Romans TM; same caution against ಹಣೆಬರಹ/ವಿಧಿ (fatalism/impersonal destiny) applies.
gospelεὐαγγέλιονeuangeliongood newsThe one saving proclamation”gospel,” “good news”Came to them “not only in word but also in power and in the Holy Spirit”High — baseline reuse. ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ.
powerδυνάμειdynameiin powerEffective, demonstrated capability, not mere words”power,” “power [of God]“Accompanying, confirming force of the gospel’s proclamationHigh — baseline reuse convention. Render ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ (never ಶಕ್ತಿ), consistent with the Romans package’s “Power of God” entry, even though this occurrence is not the fixed compound “power of God” phrase.
full convictionπληροφορίᾳ πολλῇplērophoria pollēmuch full-assuranceComplete, unwavering certainty”full conviction,” “much assurance”The Thessalonians’ reception of the gospel carried settled certainty, not tentative curiosityMedium. ಪೂರ್ಣ ದೃಢನಿಶ್ಚಯ (pūrṇa dṛḍhaniścaya).
imitatorsμιμηταὶmimētaiimitatorsFollowing a pattern/model”imitators,” “followers”The church imitates Paul’s (and ultimately the Lord’s) pattern of faith under afflictionLow. ಅನುಕರಿಸುವವರು.
afflictionθλίψειthlipseipressure, tribulationSuffering/persecution for the faith”affliction,” “tribulation,” “persecution”Receiving the word “in much affliction” alongside “joy of the Holy Spirit” — joy and suffering coexistMedium. ಸಂಕಟ/ಬಾಧೆ (saṅkaṭa/bādhe).
sounded forthἐξήχηται (ἐξηχέω)exēchētai (exēcheō)has rung out/echoed forthVivid image of a trumpet-blast or thunderclap spreading outward”sounded forth,” “rang out”The gospel’s report spread dramatically from this church, unpromptedLow. ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ವನಿಸಿದೆ.
idolsεἰδώλωνeidōlōnidols, imagesCult images/statues representing deities”idols”Their conversion is described as turning from idols to God — a decisive, exclusive reorientationHigh. Standard Kannada rendering ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳು (vigrahagaḷu) is also the ordinary, respectful Kannada word for consecrated temple images (murtis) actively venerated across Karnataka’s Hindu, Haridasa, and Lingayat communities. The term is doctrinally necessary and must not be softened, but Phase 2 translators/reviewers should be aware this is one of the curriculum’s most culturally live terms and should render it with the historic force intact (“dead images” vs. “the living and true God,” next entry) without gratuitous polemical embellishment beyond what the Greek itself states.
living and true Godθεῷ ζῶντι καὶ ἀληθινῷtheō zōnti kai alēthinōto a living and true GodContrasts God’s aliveness/reality against idols’ lifelessness”the living and true God”Direct antithesis to the preceding “idols” — God is personally alive and actually real, not one manifestation among manyHigh — baseline reuse for “God.” ಜೀವಸ್ವರೂಪಿಯೂ ಸತ್ಯಸ್ವರೂಪಿಯೂ ಆಗಿರುವ ದೇವರು. Builds directly on the Romans package’s caution that ದೇವರು must not be assimilated to an impersonal ultimate reality (e.g., Parashiva) with which the devotee’s identity is destined to merge.
wait forἀναμένεινanameneinto wait for, awaitExpectant, patient waiting for an anticipated arrival”to wait for”Christian life is characterized as expectant waiting for the Son’s return from heaven — direct link to “The Return of Christ”Medium. ಎದುರುನೋಡುವುದು (eduru nōḍuvudu).

delivers us from the wrath to comeῥυόμενον ἡμᾶς ἐκ τῆς ὀργῆς τῆς ἐρχομένηςrhyomenon hēmas ek tēs orgēs tēs erchomenēsrescuing us out of the coming wrathῥύομαι = to rescue/deliver from danger; ὀργή = wrath, here God’s judicial wrath, personified as “coming” (future, certain)“delivers us from the coming wrath,” “rescues us from the wrath to come”Direct link between “The Return of Christ” and “The Day of the Lord”: Jesus’s return is itself the rescue from the judgment that Day bringsHigh — new term (ὀργή/wrath), central to “The Day of the Lord.” Proposed Kannada: ದೇವರ ಕ್ರೋಧ (Dēvara krōdha, “God’s wrath”) or ಬರಲಿರುವ ಕೋಪ (baraliruva kōpa, “the coming anger”). Must be kept as the righteous, personal, judicial anger of a holy God at a specific future reckoning — not an impersonal cosmic retribution mechanism (karma) nor a cyclical/inevitable calamity (as in yuga-ending cosmology); and it must be held together with rescue/deliverance (ῥυόμενον) so wrath is never taught in isolation from the gospel’s remedy.

Satanὁ σατανᾶςho satanasthe Satan, the adversaryPersonal, hostile spiritual being who opposes God’s purposes”Satan,” “the adversary”Personally hindered Paul’s travel plans — real, personal spiritual opposition, not an abstract evil principleMedium. ಸೈತಾನ (saitāna), standard transliteration; low ambiguity given established Kannada Christian usage.

passion of lustπάθει ἐπιθυμίαςpathei epithymiaspassion of desireUncontrolled sexual desire, contrasted with sanctified self-control”passionate lust,” “lustful passion”Named as characteristic of “the Gentiles who do not know God” — Gentiles here meaning pagans generally, distinct from the technical Romans usage contrasting Jew/Gentile in salvation historyMedium — baseline reuse convention for ἔθνη (ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು), used here in its broader “pagan/unbeliever” sense rather than the Romans-specific Jew–Gentile unity discussion; flag this sense-shift for translators.
the Lord is an avengerἔκδικος ὁ κύριοςekdikos ho kyriosthe Lord [is] an avengerGod personally holds people accountable for sexual sin against others”the Lord is an avenger,” “the Lord will punish”Reinforces personal divine accountability, not an impersonal moral law of consequenceMedium. ಕರ್ತನು ಮುಯ್ಯಿಗೆ ಮುಯ್ಯಿ ತೀರಿಸುವವನು/ಪ್ರತೀಕಾರಕನು.

Chapter 5 — The Day of the Lord, Watchfulness, and Final Blessing

times and seasonsχρόνων καὶ καιρῶνchronōn kai kairōntimes and seasonsχρόνος = chronological time; καιρός = the fitting/appointed moment”times and seasons,” “dates and times”Explicitly refuses date-setting speculation about the ParousiaLow/Medium. ಕಾಲ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಯ.
the Day of the Lordἡμέρα κυρίουhēmera kyriouthe day of [the] LordOT prophetic term (Joel, Amos, Zephaniah, Isaiah) for God’s decisive future intervention in judgment and salvation; in Paul, fused with Christ’s Parousia”the Day of the Lord,” “the Lord’s Day” (note: distinct from “the Lord’s Day” = Sunday, a different Greek phrase)Central term for the doctrine “The Day of the Lord.” A single, sudden, unpredictable, universal reckoningCritical — new term, not in Romans baseline (Romans package addresses “wrath” and “providence” but not this specific compound). Proposed Kannada: ಕರ್ತನ ದಿನ (Kartana dina). Flag: must be clearly distinguished from Hindu cyclical eschatology (the end of Kali Yuga, cosmic dissolution/pralaya, followed by a new cycle) — the Day of the Lord is a single, linear, non-repeating, historical culmination, not one turn of an endlessly repeating cosmic wheel.
like a thief in the nightὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτίhōs kleptēs en nyktias a thief in [the] nightIdiom for suddenness and unpredictability, not the Lord’s moral character”like a thief in the night”Stresses the unannounced timing of the Day, motivating watchfulness rather than fear or speculationMedium (idiom). ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳ್ಳನಂತೆ (rātriyalli kaḷḷanante). Retain literal idiom; natural in Kannada.
labor painsὠδὶνōdinbirth-pangSudden, inescapable, intensifying onset”labor pains,” “birth pangs”Destruction comes upon the complacent as inescapably and suddenly as labor begins for a pregnant womanLow (idiom). ಪ್ರಸವವೇದನೆ (prasavavēdane).
sons of light…sons of the dayυἱοὶ φωτός…υἱοὶ ἡμέραςhuioi phōtos…huioi hēmerassons of light…sons of dayHebraic idiom: “sons of X” = those characterized by X”sons of light,” “children of the day”Believers’ identity and moral character are already fundamentally reoriented away from spiritual “night/darkness” — a present reality, not a future attainmentMedium. ಬೆಳಕಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು…ಹಗಲಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು (beḷakina makkaḷu…hagalina makkaḷu). Note: light/darkness imagery is also prominent in Hindu and yogic traditions as inner spiritual illumination (jñāna); translators should keep this light-imagery relational and moral (belonging to God, awake to his purposes) rather than let it drift toward a metaphor of attained inner enlightenment — a caution parallel to the Romans package’s note on “glory” (ಮಹಿಮೆ) and mystical-illumination associations.
sleep (spiritual) / be awake / be soberκαθεύδωμεν / γρηγορῶμεν / νήφωμενkatheudōmen / grēgorōmen / nēphōmenlet us sleep / let us be watchful / let us be soberDistinct verb (καθεύδω) from the death-euphemism κοιμάομαι used in 4:13-15 — here purely a metaphor for moral/spiritual complacency versus alertness”sleep…be awake…be sober”Moral vigilance urged in light of the uncertain timing of the Day — practical outworking of both hope and sanctificationMedium. ನಿದ್ರೆ ಮಾಡುವುದು (spiritual complacency) / ಎಚ್ಚರವಾಗಿರುವುದು / ಸ್ವಸ್ಥಚಿತ್ತರಾಗಿರುವುದು. Flag for Phase 2: translators must keep this metaphorical “sleep” (καθεύδω, moral complacency) clearly distinct in Kannada from the euphemistic “sleep” of 4:13-15 (κοιμάομαι, death) — using the same Kannada word for both could confuse readers into thinking the dead are “spiritually careless” rather than at rest awaiting resurrection. Recommend distinct Kannada verbs or explicit disambiguating notes.

Eph 6, likely written later, dependent imagery); “hope” itself functions as protective headgear”the breastplate of faith and love…for a helmet the hope of salvation”Faith, love, and hope are not passive feelings but active spiritual equipment for present moral combatHigh for ἐλπίς σωτηρία (ಭರವಸೆ + baseline reuse ರಕ್ಷಣೆ): ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಭರವಸೆಯ ಶಿರಸ್ತ್ರಾಣ. Must retain ರಕ್ಷಣೆ exactly as fixed in the Romans package (never ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ/ಐಕ್ಯ).
God has not appointed us to wrathοὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴνouk etheto hēmas ho theos eis orgēnGod did not appoint/place us for wrathDirect assurance passage; τίθημι = to appoint, set, place”God has not destined us for wrath”Direct pastoral application of “The Day of the Lord” doctrine: believers’ destiny in that Day is salvation, not judgmentHigh. ದೇವರು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕ್ರೋಧಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. See ὀργή entry at 1:10 above.

quench the Spiritτὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτεto pneuma mē sbennytedo not quench/extinguish the Spiritσβέννυμι, literally to put out a fire/flame”do not quench the Spirit,” “do not put out the Spirit’s fire”Warns against suppressing the Spirit’s active work in the congregation (linked to the following command not to despise prophecies)High — baseline reuse for “Holy Spirit.” ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮನನ್ನು ನಂದಿಸಬೇಡಿರಿ (Pavitrātmanannu nandisabēḍiri). Must retain ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ as the personal, divine third Person (never ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ) even while using a fire-extinguishing metaphor that could otherwise read as depersonalizing an impersonal “energy.”
test everything, hold fast to what is goodπάντα δοκιμάζετε, τὸ καλὸν κατέχετεpanta dokimazete, to kalon katechetetest all things, hold fast the goodδοκιμάζω = to examine/assay (as metal); κατέχω = to hold down firmly”test everything; hold fast what is good”Discernment is required and expected of the whole congregation regarding claimed spiritual utterancesLow/Medium.

Ties directly to the doctrine “Sanctification” as previously defined in the Romans package — God’s ongoing work, not the disciplined self-cultivation of the shatsthala ascent.
spirit and soul and bodyτὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμαto pneuma kai hē psychē kai to sōmathe spirit and the soul and the bodyDebated whether Paul intends a strict tripartite anthropology or a rhetorical totality-formula (“every part of you”)“spirit, soul, and body,” “your whole spirit and soul and body”Whichever reading, the point is the entirety of the person is kept for God, not a disembodied “spiritual” fragment onlyCritical/High. ಆತ್ಮ, ಪ್ರಾಣ, ದೇಹ (ātma, prāṇa, dēha). Flag: ಆತ್ಮ (ātma) is the same Kannada word used for the Vedantic ātman — the individual self ultimately understood (in mainstream Vedantic thought) to be identical with or destined to merge into Brahman/Parashiva. In this passage, “spirit” (πνεῦμα, ಆತ್ಮ) is simply one created dimension of a single human being who is kept, whole and distinct, for God — not an eternal fragment of the divine essence temporarily housed in a body. Recommend an explicit translator note wherever ಆತ್ಮ occurs of the human person (as opposed to ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, the Holy Spirit, which is already safely distinguished by its compound form) clarifying this is the creature’s spirit, not a piece of the divine Self.

Same doctrine as Romans “Divine Calling” — the summons and its fulfillment both rest on God’s initiative, not the Lingayat devotee’s self-directed spiritual ascent.
holy kissφιλήματι ἁγίῳphilēmati hagiōwith a holy kissStandard Pauline greeting-formula, cultural not doctrinal in itself”holy kiss”Physical expression of the church’s family bond, marked “holy” (set apart, appropriate to the community of faith)Low. ಪವಿತ್ರ ಮುದ್ದಿನಿಂದ / ಪವಿತ್ರ ವಂದನೆಯಿಂದ (culturally, Phase 2 may substitute a natural equivalent greeting gesture with a translator note rather than the literal kiss).
grace be with youἡ χάρις…μεθ’ ὑμῶνhē charis…meth’ hymōngrace be with youClosing benediction”grace be with you”Closes as it opened (1:1) — grace as the frame of the whole letterHigh — baseline reuse. ಕೃಪೆ …ನಿಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗಿರಲಿ.
