Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: Ephesians (Full Book)
How to read this document
This document maps every Old Testament quotation and allusion in Ephesians 1–6, every messianic reference and typological pattern, and every significant parallel to other curricula sharing this Language Package (Romans especially, but also Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians per the package’s book list). Each row records a translation sensitivity note where the Kannada rendering must be checked for consistency with an already-established rendering elsewhere in the Language Package, or where a fresh cultural-collision risk applies specifically to the cross-reference (e.g., a Messianic-typology passage or a shared quotation that must render identically in both books).
Core cross-book rendering-consistency principle: Where Ephesians quotes or closely echoes a passage already handled in the Romans baseline (e.g., Isaiah 52:7 in both Romans 10:15 and Ephesians 6:15), the Kannada rendering of the quoted OT material itself must match exactly between the two curriculum documents, even though the surrounding Pauline argument differs. This is an extension of the baseline’s existing rule requiring identical rendering of Romans 1:16-17, 8:28, and 10:9-10 across all documents.
Part 1 — Cross-Reference Matrix, Chapter by Chapter
Chapter 1
| Passage (Ephesians) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 1:3-14 | Doxology; election; adoption; redemption; sealing | God the Father, Christ, Holy Spirit | Structural parallel to 2 Corinthians 1:3 and 1 Peter 1:3 (“Blessed be the God and Father…”); thematically parallel to Romans 8:28-30’s golden chain (foreknew-predestined-called-justified-glorified) | The doxology’s dense election vocabulary (ἐκλέγομαι, προορίζω) must reuse ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ [REUSE] and the new ಮೊದಲೇ ನೇಮಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ term consistently; verify neither is rendered with ಹಣೆಬರಹ or ವಿಧಿ per baseline providence/election guidance. |
| Ephesians 1:4 | Election “before the foundation of the world” | God the Father, the elect (believers) | Echoes Genesis 1:1 creation-opening; parallels Romans 8:29-30 (foreknown/predestined), John 17:24 (Father loved the Son before the foundation of the world), 1 Peter 1:20 (Christ foreknown before foundation of world) | God’s choice is prior to and independent of creation and human merit — the same anti-merit logic as Ephesians 2:8-9. Must not be assimilated to karma-law (deeds in a “previous life” determining present standing), a risk absent from the Greek but present in Kannada folk theology. |
| Ephesians 1:5, 1:11 | Predestination unto adoption | God the Father, believers as adopted sons | Parallels Romans 8:15, 8:23, 9:11-13 (Jacob/Esau, election apart from works) | New Critical term ಮೊದಲೇ ನೇಮಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ; must be distinguished at every occurrence from ದೇವರ ಆಯ್ಕೆ (election of persons) per 07/08 analysis. Human theologian review required. |
| Ephesians 1:7 | Redemption through the blood of Christ; forgiveness | Christ (as the sacrificial redeemer) | Parallels Romans 3:24-25 (“redemption that is in Christ Jesus… by his blood”), Colossians 1:14, Romans 5:9 (“justified by his blood”); typological root in the Passover lamb’s blood (Exodus 12:13) and Levitical blood-atonement (Leviticus 17:11) | New Critical term ವಿಮೋಚನೆ (redemption). Render the “through his blood” clause consistently with Romans 3:24-25’s rendering of ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ/blood-atonement vocabulary if already established in the Romans package; verify no drift toward ಮೋಕ್ಷ. |
| Ephesians 1:9-10 | The mystery of God’s will; summing up (recapitulating) all things in Christ | Christ, “all things in heaven and on earth” | Parallels Colossians 1:15-20 (Christ as the one in/through/for whom all things hold together); echoes Genesis 1 creation-order language now applied to new-creation restoration | ἀνακεφαλαιόω (“sum up, unite under one head”) shares the κεφαλή/head root already flagged in Chapter 4/5’s headship analysis — render with a phrase built on ಒಂದುಗೂಡಿಸು (unite) + ತಲೆ (head) imagery rather than a bare “summarize,” to preserve the headship-under-Christ sense. |
| Ephesians 1:13-14 | Sealing with the Holy Spirit; the Spirit as guarantee (ἀρραβών) | Holy Spirit, believers | Parallels 2 Corinthians 1:22 (“who has also…given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee”), 2 Corinthians 5:5, Romans 8:16 (Spirit bears witness), Romans 8:23 (firstfruits of the Spirit) | New term ಮುಂಗಡ (pledge/guarantee) must be checked against any existing 2 Corinthians-curriculum rendering of the same ἀρραβών in 2 Corinthians 1:22 and 5:5 for consistency, since both books use the identical Greek word. |
| Ephesians 1:17 | Spirit of wisdom and revelation | Holy Spirit | Allusion to Isaiah 11:2 (“the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding”) — messianic Spirit-endowment prophecy now given to believers corporately | Low-medium risk; ensure ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಕಟನೆಯ ಆತ್ಮ does not read as a yogic/jñāna-mārga “wisdom attainment” but as Spirit-given insight. |
| Ephesians 1:20 | God’s power seen in raising Christ and seating him at his right hand | God the Father, Christ | Direct echo of Psalm 110:1 (“The LORD says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand…’”), the most-quoted OT verse in the NT (also Matthew 22:44, Mark 12:36, Luke 20:42-43, Acts 2:34-35, 1 Corinthians 15:25, Hebrews 1:13, Hebrews 10:12-13) | CRITICAL rendering-consistency flag. Any Kannada rendering of “sit/seated at the right hand” across Ephesians, Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts, and 1 Corinthians (all in this Language Package’s book list) must use an identical Kannada phrase for exaltation-to-the-right-hand language. Recommend fixing “ಬಲಗಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳ್ಳಿರಿಸಿದನು” as the standard rendering and cross-checking every occurrence at Phase 2. This also directly underlies the “seated with him” language of Ephesians 2:6 — Christ’s own enthronement (1:20) is the ground of the believer’s derivative co-enthronement (2:6). |
| Ephesians 1:22 | ”Put all things under his feet”; Christ as head over all things to the church | Christ | Direct quotation of Psalm 8:6 (“You have put all things under his feet”), also quoted 1 Corinthians 15:27, Hebrews 2:6-8, and echoed Matthew 28:18 | High rendering-consistency flag — Psalm 8:6 is quoted in both Ephesians (here) and 1 Corinthians 15:27, both in this Language Package. The Kannada rendering of “put all things under his feet” (ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಆತನ ಪಾದಗಳ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಇಟ್ಟನು or equivalent) must be identical across both curriculum books. Flag for Phase 2 cross-document consistency check. |
| Ephesians 1:22-23 | Church as Christ’s body; the church as his fullness (πλήρωμα) | Christ, the church | No direct OT quotation; closest conceptual parallel is the divine glory (כָּבוֹד, kabod) filling the OT Tabernacle/Temple (Exodus 40:34-35, 1 Kings 8:10-11) now understood as filling the church corporately; parallels Colossians 1:19, 2:9 | Reuse ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆ [Critical, per 07/08]; human theologian review required per existing flag. |
Chapter 2
| Passage (Ephesians) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 2:1-3 | Total spiritual deadness before grace | Humanity (“you,” “we all”) | Parallels Colossians 2:13 (“dead in your trespasses”), Romans 5:12-14 (death through Adam), Romans 6:11, 6:23; typological echo of Genesis 2:17/3:19 (death as the consequence of the first sin, Adam) | The Adam-typology background (death entering through one man) is implicit, not quoted — teachers should note the connection to “Christian Identity in Christ” doctrine’s Adam/Christ contrast (cf. Romans 5:12-21), even though Ephesians itself does not name Adam explicitly. |
| Ephesians 2:3 | Children of wrath by nature | Humanity | Parallels Romans 1:18 (wrath revealed), Romans 2:5 (storing up wrath), Romans 5:9 (saved from wrath) | Reuse baseline wrath/forensic-judgment framing; see 07/08 analysis for ಕೋಪದ ಮಕ್ಕಳು. |
| Ephesians 2:4-7 | Rich mercy; made alive with Christ; grace | God the Father, Christ, believers | Parallels Titus 3:4-7 (kindness and love of God our Savior appeared… he saved us… by the washing of regeneration); conceptually parallels John 5:24-25 (passing from death to life) | See Part 1 of 07_semantic_analysis.md for full verse-by-verse Critical-tier treatment; no additional new risk here beyond what is already flagged. |
| Ephesians 2:8-9 | Salvation by grace through faith, not works — the curriculum’s core doctrinal thesis | God, believers | Direct doctrinal parallel to Romans 3:24, 27-28 and Romans 4:1-8 (citing Genesis 15:6, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” — the baseline’s ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ / imputed righteousness doctrine); also parallels Galatians 2:16, Titus 3:5 | CRITICAL rendering-consistency flag — this is the Ephesians curriculum’s equivalent of Romans 1:16-17’s “thesis verse” status. Ephesians 2:8-9 must be rendered identically across every Ephesians-curriculum document, exactly as the baseline mandates for Romans 1:16-17, 8:28, and 10:9-10. Additionally, translators must recognize that Genesis 15:6 (already foundational to Romans 4:1-8’s imputed-righteousness doctrine) stands behind this verse conceptually — teachers may cross-reference Abraham’s faith-not-works pattern when teaching Ephesians 2:8-9. |
| Ephesians 2:10 | Workmanship; good works as fruit, not root, of salvation | Believers, God as maker | Parallels Titus 2:14, Titus 3:8; echoes Genesis 1:27/2:7 (God as the original maker/former of humanity, now re-forming believers in Christ); contrasted with (not equated to) James 2:14-26’s works-evidencing-genuine-faith teaching | ποίημα/ἔργα distinction (ದೇವರ ಕೈಕೆಲಸ vs. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು, per 07/08) must be preserved; note for teachers that James 2 is not in tension with Ephesians 2:8-10 — works are the necessary fruit of a salvation already given by grace, not a co-ground of it. |
| Ephesians 2:11-13 | Formerly far off, now brought near | Gentiles, Israel | Echoes Isaiah 57:19 (“Peace, peace, to the far and to the near, says the LORD”), directly quoted at Ephesians 2:17 below | See 2:17 entry for full rendering-consistency treatment; 2:11-13 sets up the quotation. |
| Ephesians 2:14 | ”He himself is our peace”; dividing wall abolished | Christ | Typological fulfillment of Isaiah 9:6 (“Prince of Peace”) and Micah 5:5 (“he shall be their peace”); historical background: the Jerusalem Temple’s soreg (low stone barrier with warning inscriptions barring Gentiles from the inner courts, attested by Josephus) | High cultural-resonance point (see 07 analysis’s ಬೇಲಿಯ ನಡುಗೋಡೆ entry): teachers should explain the literal historical Temple-wall background before drawing the Karnataka caste-barrier parallel, so the text’s own christological ground (Christ’s flesh/cross) remains primary, not a borrowed social-reform frame. |
| Ephesians 2:15 | Abolishing the law of commandments in ordinances | Christ, Jew and Gentile | Parallels Colossians 2:14 (“cancelling the record of debt…nailing it to the cross”), Romans 7:4-6, Romans 10:4 (“Christ is the end of the law for righteousness”) | Reuse ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ [REUSE, High, never ಧರ್ಮ]; ensure the “abolishing” language is not read as abolishing OT moral authority wholesale, but the law’s function as a Jew/Gentile-dividing boundary marker — a nuance worth a translator note given ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ’s baseline sensitivity around dharma-adjacent readings. |
| Ephesians 2:16 | Reconciling both to God in one body through the cross | Christ, Jew and Gentile, God | Parallels Romans 5:10-11 (reconciled to God through the death of his Son), 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 (ministry of reconciliation), Colossians 1:20-22 | New term ಸಂಧಾನ (reconciliation, per 07/08); if the 2 Corinthians curriculum in this Language Package has already rendered καταλλαγή (2 Corinthians 5:18-19), verify identical Kannada term is used here. |
| Ephesians 2:17 | ”He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near” | Christ | Direct quotation/echo of Isaiah 57:19, and conceptually adjacent to Isaiah 52:7 (“How beautiful are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace”) — the same Isaiah 52:7 tradition explicitly quoted in Romans 10:15 | High rendering-consistency flag. Ephesians 6:15 (“gospel of peace”) and Ephesians 2:17 both draw on the same Isaiah “peace-proclamation” tradition already anchored in the baseline via Romans 10:15’s quotation of Isaiah 52:7. The Kannada word for “peace” here must be the established ಶಾಂತಿ [REUSE]; where “preached” appears, use a form consistent with ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ’s proclamation sense (per Romans 10:15’s existing rendering) rather than a generic “spoke.” |
| Ephesians 2:19-20 | Household of God; foundation of apostles and prophets; Christ the cornerstone | Apostles, prophets, Christ | Cornerstone typology: alludes to Isaiah 28:16 (“Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone…”) and Psalm 118:22 (“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone”) — both directly quoted at Romans 9:33 and Romans 10:11 (Isaiah 28:16 partially), and at 1 Peter 2:6-8, Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10-11, Luke 20:17, Acts 4:11 | CRITICAL rendering-consistency flag — this is a densely cross-referenced typological term appearing in Romans (already in this Language Package) and elsewhere. The Kannada rendering of “cornerstone” (ಮೂಲೆಗಲ್ಲು, per 07/08) and of the underlying Psalm 118:22/Isaiah 28:16 quotations must match whatever rendering the Romans package uses at Romans 9:33 and 10:11. Phase 2 must cross-check this explicitly. |
| Ephesians 2:21-22 | Holy temple; dwelling place of God in the Spirit | Believers corporately, Holy Spirit | Typological fulfillment of the OT Tabernacle (Exodus 25:8, “let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst”) and Solomon’s Temple (1 Kings 8:10-11, the glory filling the house); parallels 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, 1 Corinthians 6:19, 1 Peter 2:5 | New term ಪವಿತ್ರ ಆಲಯ (per 07/08); if 1 Corinthians curriculum in this package has already rendered ναός at 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 and 6:19, verify identical Kannada term for consistency across the shared temple-typology motif. |
Chapter 3
| Passage (Ephesians) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 3:1-6 | The mystery made known to Paul by revelation; Gentiles fellow heirs | Paul, Gentiles | Near-verbatim doctrinal parallel to Romans 16:25-26 (“the mystery that was kept secret for long ages…but has now been disclosed…and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations”) | High rendering-consistency flag. Ephesians 3:3-6 and Romans 16:25-26 describe the identical theological reality (the previously hidden, now-revealed inclusion of the Gentiles) using close verbal parallels in Greek. Both must use the fixed Kannada qualifying phrase ದೇವರು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ರಹಸ್ಯ (per 07/08’s Critical “mystery” entry) — verify the Romans document’s rendering of 16:25-26 uses this same phrase, or update it for consistency. |
| Ephesians 3:6 | Gentiles fellow heirs, fellow members, fellow partakers of the promise | Gentiles, Jewish believers | Parallels Romans 8:17 (fellow heirs with Christ), Galatians 3:29 (Abraham’s offspring, heirs), Romans 11:17 (wild olive branches grafted in — same inclusion doctrine, different image) | New term ಸಹ ಬಾಧ್ಯಸ್ಥರು (per 07/08); teachers should cross-reference Romans 11:17-24’s olive-tree image as a complementary picture of the same doctrine, even though Ephesians does not use tree imagery. |
| Ephesians 3:9 | Mystery hidden in God who created all things | God the Father | Echoes Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning God created…”); parallels Colossians 1:16 | Low-medium; standard creation vocabulary, no forbidden-substitution risk. |
| Ephesians 3:10 | Manifold wisdom of God made known to rulers and authorities through the church | The church, angelic “rulers and authorities” | Parallels 1 Peter 1:12 (“things into which angels long to look”), 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 (God’s hidden wisdom, unknown to the rulers of this age) | Connects directly to the Chapter 6 “rulers and authorities” spiritual-warfare vocabulary (Ephesians 6:12) — same Greek terms (ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι) in both places; render consistently (ಪ್ರಭುತ್ವಗಳು, ಅಧಿಕಾರಗಳು) at both 3:10 and 6:12. |
| Ephesians 3:14-19 | Prayer for strengthening, indwelling of Christ, rooted in love, fullness of God | Paul (praying), the Father, Christ, believers | Parallels Colossians 1:9-11, Colossians 2:2-3; conceptually parallels John 17:20-26 (Christ’s prayer for the disciples’ unity and indwelling) | Reuse ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆ [Critical]; the “filled with all the fullness of God” clause (3:19) requires the same human-theologian review flag as 1:23 and 4:13. |
| Ephesians 3:20-21 | Closing doxology — “far more abundantly than all we ask or think” | God the Father, the church, Christ | Structural and thematic parallel to Romans 11:33-36’s closing doxology (also concluding a major doctrinal section with praise) | Medium. No new forbidden-substitution risk; note the shared genre convention (doctrinal exposition closing in doxology) so translators preserve the exalted, worshipful register consistent with Romans 11:33-36’s established tone. |
Chapter 4
| Passage (Ephesians) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 4:1-3 | Walk worthy of your calling; unity of the Spirit | Believers | Parallels Romans 12:1-3 (present your bodies… by the mercies of God), Colossians 1:10, Philippians 1:27 | Reuse ನಡೆಯುವುದು (walk, per 07/08) and ಕರೆ [REUSE]; see unity flag below. |
| Ephesians 4:4-6 | Sevenfold “one body, one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all” | Holy Spirit, Christ (“one Lord”), God the Father | Parallels 1 Corinthians 12:13 (“in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body”), Romans 12:5, Galatians 3:28; the climactic “one God and Father of all” echoes the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one”) | CRITICAL — book-level unity flag reaches maximum density here. Every “one” in this passage must render ἑνότης/εἷς-family vocabulary with ಏಕತೆ/ಒಂದೇ, never ಐಕ್ಯತೆ (per 07/08’s dedicated escalation rule). Additionally, the Deuteronomy 6:4 Shema-echo in “one God and Father” should be cross-checked against however Deuteronomy 6:4 / Mark 12:29 (Jesus quoting the Shema) is rendered elsewhere in this Language Package for consistency of “the LORD is one” language, since both passages assert a personal divine oneness, not the impersonal non-dual “oneness” (advaita) that Kannada readers might otherwise associate with monistic “unity” claims. |
| Ephesians 4:7-8 | Grace given to each according to Christ’s gift; ascension gifts | Christ (ascended) | Direct quotation of Psalm 68:18 (“When he ascended on high, he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men” — Paul’s citation modifies the Hebrew/LXX “received gifts among men” to “gave gifts to men,” a deliberate Christological adaptation) | High. This is a modified quotation, not verbatim LXX — translators must not “correct” the Kannada rendering back toward a literal Psalm 68:18 wording that would erase Paul’s intentional Christological point (the ascended Christ as giver, not merely receiver, of gifts, having first “led captivity captive”). Flag for human theologian review; note the distinction between citation and adaptation for the footnote convention. |
| Ephesians 4:9-10 | ”He had also descended… he who ascended far above all the heavens” | Christ | Connects to Incarnation doctrine (Philippians 2:6-8) and Ascension narrative (Acts 1:9-11, Luke 24:50-51); the “descended” clause has historically been debated (descent to earth in incarnation vs. descent to Hades) | Medium-High. Recommend following the incarnation-then-ascension reading (descent = the incarnation itself, per Philippians 2) to keep consistency with the baseline’s ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ (incarnation, Critical, never ಅವತಾರ) doctrine already established; avoid language suggesting a repeatable divine descent, which would reopen the ಅವತಾರ risk. |
| Ephesians 4:11 | Christ’s gift-offices: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers | Christ (giver), church office-holders | Parallels Romans 12:6-8 (gifts differing according to grace given), 1 Corinthians 12:28-30 | Reuse ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ವರಗಳು [REUSE] as the category; use new office-terms ಸಭಾಪಾಲಕರು, ಬೋಧಕರು, ಸುವಾರ್ತಿಕರು consistently (per 07/08); if the 1 Corinthians curriculum in this package has already rendered the 1 Corinthians 12:28 office-list, cross-check for identical terms. |
| Ephesians 4:13 | Unity of the faith and knowledge of the Son of God; mature manhood; fullness of Christ | The church corporately, Christ | Parallels Colossians 1:28 (“present everyone mature in Christ”); “fullness” shares the πλήρωμα root of 1:23 and 3:19 | Reuse ಏಕತೆ (unity flag) and ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣತೆ (Critical); both flags converge in this single verse — highest-density risk verse in the chapter. Human theologian review required. |
| Ephesians 4:22-24 | Put off the old self, put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in righteousness and holiness | Believers | Parallels Colossians 3:9-10 (put off the old self… put on the new self, being renewed… after the image of its creator); echoes Genesis 1:26-27 (mankind created in God’s image/likeness) — new-creation restoring the original creation intent; parallels 2 Corinthians 5:17 (“if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation”) | High. Reuse ಹಳೆಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯ / ಹೊಸ ಮನುಷ್ಯ and ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ/ಪವಿತ್ರ [both REUSE]; if the 2 Corinthians curriculum has rendered “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17) already, note the conceptual link for teaching purposes even though the Ephesians Greek term (καινὸς ἄνθρωπος) differs slightly from 2 Corinthians’ καινὴ κτίσις. |
| Ephesians 4:25 | ”Let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor” | Believers | Direct quotation of Zechariah 8:16 | Medium. Standard ethical-exhortation rendering; low doctrinal risk but should be flagged as a direct OT citation, not merely Pauline exhortation, for footnoting purposes. |
| Ephesians 4:26 | ”Be angry and do not sin” | Believers | Direct quotation of Psalm 4:4 (LXX numbering; Psalm 4:4 in most English versions) | Medium. Same footnoting note as above. |
| Ephesians 4:28 | Let the thief no longer steal, but labor, doing honest work | Believers | Allusion to the eighth commandment, Exodus 20:15 / Deuteronomy 5:19 | Low-medium. |
| Ephesians 4:30 | ”Do not grieve the Holy Spirit” | Holy Spirit, believers | Echoes Isaiah 63:10 (“But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit”) | High (reinforces baseline Critical Holy Spirit personhood safeguard, per 07/08); this is a direct OT allusion establishing that grieving the Spirit is a consistent biblical-theological theme from the Exodus wilderness generation (Isaiah 63:10’s context) through to NT believers — worth noting for teaching continuity. |
| Ephesians 4:32 | Forgive one another, as God in Christ forgave you | Believers, God | Parallels Colossians 3:13, Matthew 6:14-15, Matthew 18:21-35 (parable of the unforgiving servant) | Medium. Standard forgiveness vocabulary; ensure consistency with however “forgive” is rendered in the Matthew curriculum’s parable of the unforgiving servant, given the shared theological point (forgiven people forgive). |
Chapter 5
| Passage (Ephesians) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 5:1 | Be imitators of God, as beloved children | God the Father, believers | Echoes Leviticus 19:2 (“You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy”); parallels Matthew 5:48 (“You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect”) | Medium. Note the OT holiness-code root; reinforces ಪವಿತ್ರ/ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ [REUSE] doctrine continuity from Leviticus through the Sermon on the Mount to Ephesians. |
| Ephesians 5:2 | Christ gave himself as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God | Christ | Directly echoes the recurring OT sacrificial formula “a pleasing aroma to the LORD” (Exodus 29:18, Leviticus 1:9, Genesis 8:21 — Noah’s post-flood sacrifice) | High (per 07/08’s ಸುವಾಸನೆಯ ಕಾಣಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಬಲಿ entry). This OT formula recurs dozens of times across the sacrificial system; Kannada rendering must consistently use ಬಲಿ (never ಯಜ್ಞ) wherever this “pleasing aroma” sacrificial language appears across the whole Language Package, to avoid Vedic-yajña conflation. |
| Ephesians 5:3-5 | Sexual immorality and covetousness as idolatry | Believers | Parallels Colossians 3:5 (“covetousness, which is idolatry”), 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 | Medium. |
| Ephesians 5:8-14 | Children of light vs. darkness; “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” | Believers, Christ | Composite allusion to Isaiah 60:1 (“Arise, shine, for your light has come”) and Isaiah 26:19 (resurrection/awakening imagery); parallels John 1:4-9, John 3:19-21, John 8:12 (light/darkness dualism), 1 Thessalonians 5:5-8 (sons of light) | High. This may preserve fragments of an early Christian hymn or baptismal formula; the light/darkness dualism must be kept relational and moral (a change of allegiance and identity) rather than absorbed into any Vedantic light-of-consciousness/enlightenment (jñāna) framework common in regional religious vocabulary. If the John curriculum in this Language Package has rendered John 1:4-9 and John 3:19-21’s light/darkness language, cross-check for identical terms (ಬೆಳಕು/ಕತ್ತಲೆ) here. |
| Ephesians 5:18-20 | Be filled with the Spirit, not drunk with wine; psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, thanksgiving | Holy Spirit, believers | Parallels Acts 2:13-15 (the Pentecost crowd’s mistaken accusation of drunkenness — Peter’s rebuttal is the closest narrative parallel to this verse’s contrast), Luke 1:15 (John the Baptist filled with the Spirit from the womb), Colossians 3:16 | High (per 07/08). If the Acts curriculum in this Language Package has already treated Acts 2:13-15’s drunkenness-accusation narrative, cross-reference it explicitly when teaching Ephesians 5:18, since it is the NT’s own narrative illustration of what Spirit-filling is not (ecstatic loss of control) as much as what it is. |
| Ephesians 5:21-33 | Household code: mutual submission, husbands/wives, Christ and the church, one flesh | Christ, the church, husbands, wives | Ephesians 5:31 directly quotes Genesis 2:24 (“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”) — the same verse is quoted by Jesus in Matthew 19:5 and Mark 10:7-8, and referenced in 1 Corinthians 6:16 | CRITICAL rendering-consistency flag. Genesis 2:24 is quoted in at least three books within this Language Package’s stated curriculum (Ephesians, Matthew, Mark; alluded to in 1 Corinthians). The Kannada rendering of “leave…hold fast…one flesh” (ಒಂದೇ ಶರೀರ, per 07/08) must be checked for word-for-word identity across all these occurrences at Phase 2. This is the same category of cross-document consistency requirement the baseline already applies to Romans 1:16-17/8:28/10:9-10. |
| Ephesians 5:23 | Husband as head of the wife as Christ is head of the church | Christ, husbands | Parallels 1 Corinthians 11:3 (“the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God”), Colossians 1:18 | High. Reuse ತಲೆ/ಶಿರಸ್ಸು (headship, per 07/08); if 1 Corinthians 11:3 has already been rendered in this Language Package, verify identical headship vocabulary is used. |
| Ephesians 5:25-27 | Husbands love wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up; sanctify, cleanse by washing of water with the word; present church without spot or wrinkle | Christ, husbands | Washing/cleansing echoes Ezekiel 36:25-27 (sprinkling of clean water, new heart and spirit) and parallels Titus 3:5 (“washing of regeneration”); “without spot or wrinkle” echoes the OT unblemished-sacrifice requirement (Leviticus 22:19-25) and bridal-purity imagery; parallels Revelation 19:7-8 (the bride made ready) and 2 Corinthians 11:2 (betrothed as a pure virgin to Christ) | High. The bridal/marriage-to-Christ typology recurring at Revelation 19:7-8 should be noted as a canonical bookend to this passage for teaching purposes; ensure ಪವಿತ್ರೀಕರಣ [REUSE] and ಪವಿತ್ರ [REUSE] are used, not a ritual-purity-only term, per baseline guidance distinguishing relational/moral holiness from ritual purification. |
| Ephesians 5:31-32 | ”This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church” | Christ, the church | Specific application of the book’s central μυστήριον term (see 1:9, 3:3-9) to marriage as a living picture | Critical. Reuse the fixed qualifying phrase ದೇವರು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ರಹಸ್ಯ, applied here specifically to marriage-as-picture-of-Christ-and-church; do not render as a bare, undefined ರಹಸ್ಯ (see 07/08). |
| Ephesians 5:33 | Wife respects her husband | Wives | Parallels 1 Peter 3:1-6 | Medium. |
Chapter 6
| Passage (Ephesians) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 6:1-3 | ”Honor your father and mother… that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land” | Children, parents | Direct quotation of Exodus 20:12 / Deuteronomy 5:16 (the Fifth Commandment), also quoted by Jesus at Matthew 15:4, Matthew 19:19, Mark 7:10, Mark 10:19, Luke 18:20 | High rendering-consistency flag. This Decalogue commandment is quoted across Ephesians and at least three Gospels in this Language Package’s book list. The Kannada rendering of “honor your father and mother” and the promise clause must be checked for identical wording across all occurrences. Note the covenant-specific “in the land” (originally the Promised Land) is generalized by Paul to a broader “on the earth” application — this shift from a specific covenant-land promise to a general principle should be explained in a translator note, not silently smoothed over. |
| Ephesians 6:4 | Fathers, bring children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord | Fathers, children | Parallels Colossians 3:21; echoes Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (teach these words diligently to your children — the Shema’s pedagogical mandate), Proverbs 22:6 | Medium. |
| Ephesians 6:5-9 | Bondservants and masters; “the same Master…in heaven, and there is no partiality with him” | Bondservants, masters, Christ | Parallels Colossians 3:22-4:1 (near-verbatim doctrinal twin passage), 1 Timothy 6:1-2, Titus 2:9-10, 1 Peter 2:18-25 (Christ’s own suffering as the pattern for servants); “no partiality” echoes Deuteronomy 10:17 and parallels Romans 2:11 (“God shows no partiality”) | High (per 07/08’s ದಾಸರು/ಯಜಮಾನರು entries). The “no partiality” clause is a direct doctrinal echo of Romans 2:11, already in this Language Package — verify identical Kannada phrasing (ದೇವರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತವಿಲ್ಲ or equivalent) is used in both places. Note also the strong literary parallel to Colossians 3:22-4:1; if a Colossians curriculum is later added to this package, this passage-pair will require joint consistency review. |
| Ephesians 6:10-17 | The armor of God | Believers, the devil | Draws typologically on Isaiah 11:5 (“Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist”), Isaiah 59:17 (“he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head”), and Isaiah 52:7 (feet shod with the gospel of peace); parallels 1 Thessalonians 5:8 (breastplate of faith and love, helmet of the hope of salvation) | High. Isaiah 59:17’s “breastplate of righteousness” and “helmet of salvation” must reuse ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ and ರಕ್ಷಣೆ [both REUSE, Critical] exactly. Note that in Isaiah 59:17 God himself wears this armor as the divine warrior; Paul transfers the image to believers, who are now clothed in God’s own righteousness and salvation — a teaching point worth preserving in any accompanying commentary. |
| Ephesians 6:15 | Shoes: readiness given by the gospel of peace | Believers | Direct echo of Isaiah 52:7 (“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace”), the very passage explicitly quoted at Romans 10:15 (“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”) | CRITICAL rendering-consistency flag — highest-priority shared-quotation item in this analysis. Because Romans 10:15 in the baseline Language Package already quotes Isaiah 52:7 directly, and Ephesians 6:15 draws on the identical Isaiah passage, the Kannada rendering of “gospel of peace” / “feet” / “good news” imagery must match the established Romans 10:15 rendering exactly. Reuse ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ and ಶಾಂತಿ [both REUSE]. Flag for mandatory Phase 2 cross-document back-translation check against Romans 10:15. |
| Ephesians 6:12 | Rulers, authorities, cosmic powers, spiritual forces of evil | The devil and his hierarchy | Parallels Romans 8:38-39 (“neither angels nor rulers… nor powers”), Colossians 1:16, Colossians 2:15, 1 Peter 3:22, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 | High (per 07/08). Reuse the same terms established at 3:10 (ಪ್ರಭುತ್ವಗಳು, ಅಧಿಕಾರಗಳು) for consistency within Ephesians; if Romans 8:38-39 has an established rendering for “rulers” and “powers” in the baseline, cross-check that this does not conflict, since both passages describe the identical category of defeated spiritual beings. |
| Ephesians 6:17 | Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God | Holy Spirit, believers | Parallels Hebrews 4:12 (word of God as a two-edged sword), Isaiah 49:2 (“he made my mouth like a sharp sword”), Revelation 1:16; typological parallel to Jesus’s own use of Scripture against temptation (Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13, each citing Deuteronomy) | Medium-High. If the Matthew and Luke curricula in this Language Package have rendered Jesus’s temptation-narrative Scripture-citations (“It is written…”), note the thematic parallel for teaching purposes: believers wield Scripture defensively/offensively exactly as Christ himself modeled. |
| Ephesians 6:19-20 | Boldness to make known the mystery of the gospel; ambassador in chains | Paul | Parallels 2 Corinthians 5:20 (“we are ambassadors for Christ”), Acts 28:31 (Paul in Rome, “proclaiming…with all boldness”), Philippians 1:20 | Medium. Reuse ರಹಸ್ಯ + qualifying phrase for “mystery of the gospel.” |
| Ephesians 6:21-22 | Tychicus commended as messenger | Tychicus | Near-verbatim literary parallel to Colossians 4:7-8 — widely regarded as evidence of the two letters’ close composition relationship | Low-medium; a historical/narrative cross-reference rather than doctrinal. If a Colossians curriculum is added later, this pairing requires joint terminology consistency (proper name ತುಖಿಕ, standard transliteration). |
| Ephesians 6:23-24 | Closing benediction: peace, love, faith, grace | God the Father, Christ | Parallels standard Pauline epistolary closings (Romans 16:20, 1 Corinthians 16:23, Galatians 6:18) | Low. Reuse ಶಾಂತಿ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ನಂಬಿಕೆ, ಕೃಪೆ [all REUSE]. |
Part 2 — Messianic References and Typological Patterns (Summary)
| Type/Pattern | Ephesians Occurrence(s) | OT Root | NT Parallels in Language Package | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Davidic enthronement (Psalm 110:1) | 1:20 | Psalm 110:1 | Matthew 22:44, Mark 12:36, Luke 20:42-43, Acts 2:34-35, 1 Corinthians 15:25 | Fixed rendering required; see Chapter 1 matrix entry. |
| Universal dominion (Psalm 8:6) | 1:22 | Psalm 8:6 | 1 Corinthians 15:27, Hebrews 2:6-8 | Fixed rendering required; see Chapter 1 matrix entry. |
| Cornerstone/rejected stone | 2:20 | Isaiah 28:16; Psalm 118:22 | Romans 9:33, Romans 10:11, Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10-11, Luke 20:17, Acts 4:11, 1 Peter 2:6-8 | Fixed rendering required; see Chapter 2 matrix entry. |
| Prince of Peace / covenant peace | 2:14, 2:17, 6:15 | Isaiah 9:6, Isaiah 57:19, Isaiah 52:7, Micah 5:5 | Romans 10:15 | Isaiah 52:7/Romans 10:15 link is the single highest-priority shared quotation; see Chapter 6 matrix entry. |
| Divine warrior’s armor | 6:14-17 | Isaiah 11:5, Isaiah 59:17 | 1 Thessalonians 5:8 | Image transferred from God himself (Isaiah 59:17) to believers clothed in his righteousness/salvation. |
| Ascended gift-giver | 4:8 | Psalm 68:18 (adapted) | — | Deliberate Christological modification of the source text; must not be “corrected” toward literal LXX wording. |
| Temple/dwelling-place fulfillment | 2:21-22 | Exodus 25:8, 1 Kings 8:10-11 | 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, 1 Corinthians 6:19, 1 Peter 2:5 | Church as the new, living temple; avoid Hindu-temple-adjacent vocabulary (see 07/08). |
| Marriage as covenant type of Christ and the church | 5:31-32 | Genesis 2:24 | Matthew 19:5, Mark 10:7-8, 1 Corinthians 6:16 | Single most cross-referenced quotation in the whole book; fixed rendering mandatory. |
| New Adam / new humanity | 2:15 (“one new man”), 4:24 (created after God’s likeness) | Genesis 1:26-27 | Romans 5:12-21 (implicit Adam-Christ contrast), 2 Corinthians 5:17, Colossians 3:9-10 | Ephesians never names Adam explicitly but the typology is structurally present; teach alongside Romans 5. |
Part 3 — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations (Phase 2 Enforcement)
The following rules extend the baseline’s existing cross-document consistency rules (Romans 1:16-17; 8:28; 10:9-10) to Ephesians:
- Ephesians 2:8-9 must render identically across every Ephesians-curriculum document — this is Ephesians’ thesis-verse equivalent to Romans 1:16-17.
- Psalm 110:1 (“seated at the right hand”) must render identically at Ephesians 1:20 and every occurrence in Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts, and 1 Corinthians within this Language Package.
- Psalm 8:6 (“put all things under his feet”) must render identically at Ephesians 1:22 and 1 Corinthians 15:27.
- Psalm 118:22 / Isaiah 28:16 (cornerstone) must render identically at Ephesians 2:20 and Romans 9:33/10:11, and match Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Acts occurrences.
- Isaiah 52:7 (feet, gospel of peace) must render identically at Ephesians 6:15 and Romans 10:15.
- Genesis 2:24 (“one flesh”) must render identically at Ephesians 5:31, Matthew 19:5, and Mark 10:7-8.
- Exodus 20:12 / Deuteronomy 5:16 (honor father and mother) must render identically at Ephesians 6:2-3 and every Gospel occurrence (Matthew 15:4, 19:19; Mark 7:10, 10:19; Luke 18:20).
- Romans 2:11 (“no partiality”) must render identically at Ephesians 6:9.
- Romans 16:25-26 (the mystery kept secret, now disclosed) must use the same fixed qualifying phrase (ದೇವರು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ರಹಸ್ಯ) as every Ephesians “mystery” occurrence (1:9; 3:3-4, 3:6, 3:9; 5:32; 6:19).
- Psalm 68:18 (Ephesians 4:8) is a deliberately modified quotation and must NOT be force-aligned to a literal Hebrew/LXX rendering; preserve Paul’s Christological adaptation (“gave gifts,” not “received gifts”).
- Every occurrence of “unity”/“one body”/“one new man”/“one Spirit” in Ephesians (2:15-16; 4:3-6, 4:13, 4:16) must be back-translation-checked to confirm ಏಕತೆ, never ಐಕ್ಯತೆ, per the book-level Critical flag already established in 07/08.
Summary of Full-Book Coverage
All six chapters of Ephesians have been reviewed for OT quotations, allusions, messianic/typological patterns, and NT parallels (with particular attention to Romans, Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts, 1 Corinthians, and 2 Corinthians, per this Language Package’s stated book list). No chapter is without cross-reference content; the highest-density chapters are Chapter 1 (enthronement/dominion citations), Chapter 2 (core passage plus cornerstone/temple typology), Chapter 4 (Psalm 68:18 and the sevenfold unity passage), Chapter 5 (Genesis 2:24 and sacrificial-aroma formula), and Chapter 6 (Decalogue citation and the Isaiah 52:7/armor-of-God complex). Eleven explicit rendering-consistency rules are recorded above for mandatory Phase 2 enforcement.
