Semantic Analysis
0. Method Note
For the core passage (Revelation 21:1-8), every load-bearing term receives full treatment: original Greek word · transliteration · literal meaning · semantic range · English variants · contextual theological meaning · Kannada rendering & risk tier with grounded rationale.
For all other chapters (1–20, 22), load-bearing terms are tabulated with the same fields in
compact form. Chapters are treated first to last, covering the whole book. Where a chapter
introduces no new load-bearing vocabulary, this is stated explicitly rather than omitted. Risk
tiers (Critical/High/Medium/Low) follow the definitions in doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Recurring, book-wide syncretism pressure points flagged throughout this analysis:
- Naga/serpent veneration (village nagakal stones, Nagapanchami) — relevant to “dragon/serpent.”
- Forehead-marking traditions (tilaka, vibhuṭi, sectarian marks) — relevant to “seal on the forehead,” “mark of the beast.”
- Karma-ledger folk belief (Chitragupta’s register of deeds) — relevant to “Book of Life,” “judged according to their works.”
- Cyclical cosmology (yuga ages, pralaya/re-creation) — relevant to “new heaven and new earth,” “thousand years.”
- Moksha/mukti/Aikya (liberation as escape from or dissolution into the divine) — relevant to “new creation,” “reign forever,” “second death,” “lake of fire.”
- Haridasa bhakti bridal mysticism (madhurya bhāva, Radha-Krishna imagery) — relevant to “Bride,” “marriage supper of the Lamb.”
- Shakta goddess tradition (Chamundeshwari) and the baseline’s existing ಶಕ್ತಿ/ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ distinction — relevant to “Almighty” (παντοκράτωρ), which recurs far more often in Revelation than in Romans.
- Astrology/numerology (jyotiṣa, popular numerological divination) — relevant to “morning star,” “number of the beast (666).”
- Animal sacrifice traditions (bali) and goddess iconography — relevant to “Lamb,” “woman clothed with the sun.”
- Ascetic self-effort (tapas, kayaka/shatsthala self-attained stages) — relevant to “overcomer,” “perseverance,” “priesthood of believers.”
1. CORE PASSAGE — Revelation 21:1-8 (Verse-by-Verse)
Revelation 21:1
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.”
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | kainon ouranon kai kainēn gēn |
| Literal meaning | ”new heaven and new earth” |
| Semantic range (καινός) | Qualitatively new/renewed (not merely νέος, “new” in the sense of “recent in time”); fresh in kind, unprecedented |
| English variants | ”new,” “renewed,” “of a new kind” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Not a second, different cosmos replacing a destroyed one arbitrarily, but the created order renewed and purged of corruption — the climax of the doctrine of The New Heaven and New Earth. The “no more sea” clause resolves the book’s recurring image of the sea as the source of chaos and the beast (13:1). |
Risk: High. Kannada readers instinctively map “world ends, new world appears” onto the pralaya/sṛṣṭi (dissolution/re-creation) cycle of Puranic cosmology, where creation and dissolution recur endlessly across cosmic ages (yugas/kalpas). Translator note required: this is a single, final, non-repeating renewal, not another turn of a cosmic wheel. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Greek | ἡ θάλασσα οὐκ ἔστιν ἔτι |
| Transliteration | hē thalassa ouk estin eti |
| Literal meaning | ”the sea is no longer” |
| Semantic range (θάλασσα) | Sea, ocean; in apocalyptic literature also a symbol of primeval chaos and the abode from which hostile powers emerge |
| English variants | ”sea,” “ocean,” “the deep” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Symbolically resolves Revelation’s beast-from-the-sea imagery (13:1) and the “waters” from which Babylon’s power draws (17:1,15); ties to Sovereignty of God over History — every hostile force is finally removed. |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ಸಮುದ್ರ (samudra). Risk: Low. Standard word; symbolic freight must be carried by surrounding teaching notes, not the word itself. |
Revelation 21:2
“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | tēn polin tēn hagian, Ierousalēm kainēn |
| Literal meaning | ”the holy city, new Jerusalem” |
| Semantic range | πόλις = city, civic body of people; ἁγία = holy (baseline reuse: ἅγιος → ಪವಿತ್ರ); Ἰερουσαλήμ = proper name |
| English variants | ”holy city,” “New Jerusalem,” “the city of God” |
| Contextual theological meaning | The consummated dwelling-place of God with his redeemed people; corporate, not individual; feeds New Heaven and New Earth and Church as Bride of Christ. |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ಪವಿತ್ರ ನಗರ, ಹೊಸ ಯೆರೂಸಲೇಮ್ (pavitra nagara, hosa Yerūsalēm). Risk: Medium. ಪವಿತ್ರ is already established (baseline reuse); ಯೆರೂಸಲೇಮ್ is the standard proper-name form. Risk lies only in readers treating this as a purely metaphorical “state of enlightenment” rather than the concrete future reality Revelation portrays with architectural detail (vv. 9-27). |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | katabainousan ek tou ouranou apo tou theou |
| Literal meaning | ”coming down out of heaven from God” |
| Semantic range (καταβαίνω) | To descend, come down; used elsewhere of the Spirit descending (Matt 3:16) and manna (John 6:41) |
| English variants | ”coming down,” “descending” |
| Contextual theological meaning | God initiates and gives the city; humanity does not build or ascend to it. Directly relevant to Sovereignty of God over History and to the grace-not-merit pattern already established in the baseline (cf. ಕೃಪೆ notes). |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ಆಕಾಶದಿಂದ ದೇವರ ಕಡೆಯಿಂದ ಇಳಿದುಬರುವ (ākāśadinda Dēvara kaḍeyinda iḷidu baruva). Risk: Medium. Must not be softened into “was built/appeared,” which would lose the God-given, descending character of the gift. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | hētoimasmenēn hōs nymphēn kekosmēmenēn tō andri autēs |
| Literal meaning | ”prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” |
| Semantic range (νύμφη) | Bride, young wife on her wedding day; ἀνήρ here = husband/bridegroom |
| English variants | ”bride,” “wife-to-be” |
| Contextual theological meaning | The corporate people of God, consummated in permanent covenant union with Christ — the doctrine of The Church as Bride of Christ, resolved from the betrothal language of 19:7-9. |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ವಧು (vadhu, bride) — cf. established compound at 19:7 ಕುರಿಮರಿಯ ವಧು (Kurimariya vadhu, “Bride of the Lamb”). Risk: High. Kannada readers from a Haridasa-bhakti background carry the madhurya bhāva devotional pattern in which an individual devotee’s soul is imagined as bride longing for Krishna the divine bridegroom. Revelation’s Bride is the covenant community consummated at history’s climax, not each soul’s private mystical romance with God; a translator note distinguishing corporate ecclesial identity from individual bridal-mystical devotion is required. |
Revelation 21:3
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.’”
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | hē skēnē tou theou meta tōn anthrōpōn … skēnōsei met’ autōn |
| Literal meaning | ”the tent/tabernacle of God [is] with mankind … he will tent/tabernacle with them” |
| Semantic range (σκηνόω/σκηνή) | To pitch a tent, dwell, encamp; echoes the wilderness Tabernacle and, climactically, John 1:14 (“the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us”) |
| English variants | ”dwelling place,” “tabernacle,” “he will dwell/tent” |
| Contextual theological meaning | The permanent, unmediated presence of God with his people — the goal toward which the whole Bible, and the doctrine of Incarnation already flagged Critical in the baseline (ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ), has been moving: God himself present in the midst of a physical, renewed creation. |
(Dēvara vāsasthāna manuṣyaroṅdigide … avaroṅdige vāsisuvanu). Risk: High. Must avoid any wording suggesting a temporary visitation (a deity’s periodic darshan or avatar-descent, already flagged Critical for incarnation in the baseline) rather than a permanent, unending co-residence in the renewed creation. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | autoi laoi autou esontai, kai autos ho theos met’ autōn estai [autōn theos] |
| Literal meaning | ”they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them [as their God]“ |
| Semantic range (λαός) | A people, a covenant people (distinct from ἔθνη, nations/gentiles — baseline reuse: ಅನ್ಯಜನಾಂಗದವರು) |
| English variants | ”people(s),” “his own people” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Covenant formula (cf. Exodus 6:7, Jeremiah 31:33) fulfilled forever; ties to Unity of Jews and Gentiles already established in the baseline doctrine registry and now consummated for “peoples” (plural, all nations). |
Risk: Medium. Standard covenantal phrasing; low ambiguity if ದೇವರು (baseline reuse) is used consistently. |
Revelation 21:4
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | exaleipsei pan dakryon ek tōn ophthalmōn autōn |
| Literal meaning | ”he will wipe away every tear from their eyes” |
| Semantic range (ἐξαλείφω) | To wipe away, blot out, erase completely (used elsewhere of sins being “blotted out,” Acts 3:19) |
| English variants | ”wipe away,” “erase,” “remove entirely” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Total, personal, tender divine comfort — a direct answer to the martyrs’ cry in 6:10 (“how long?”); feeds Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil. |
Risk: Low. Vivid, warm, easily understood image; no significant collision. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | ho thanatos ouk estai eti, oute penthos oute kraugē oute ponos ouk estai eti |
| Literal meaning | ”death will no longer exist, nor mourning, nor crying, nor pain any longer” |
| Semantic range (θάνατος) | Physical death; here also symbolically representative of death’s entire regime, distinguished from the “second death” of v.8 |
| English variants | ”death,” “mourning,” “crying,” “pain” |
| Contextual theological meaning | The final, permanent abolition of death itself (contrast 1 Cor 15:26, “the last enemy to be destroyed is death”) — grounds the doctrine of Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil, and must be read alongside baseline-reuse ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ (resurrection), the guarantee that death’s abolition is bodily and historical, not merely psychological. |
Risk: High. Risk that “no more death” is heard through a moksha/mukti lens (escape from the cycle of death-and-rebirth into a formless state) rather than the biblical picture of an embodied people living forever in bodily resurrection within a renewed physical creation. A translator note distinguishing this from ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ (already forbidden substitutions for ರಕ್ಷಣೆ in the baseline) is required. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Greek | ὅτι τὰ πρῶτα ἀπῆλθαν |
| Transliteration | hoti ta prōta apēlthan |
| Literal meaning | ”because the former things have gone away” |
| Semantic range (τὰ πρῶτα) | “The first/former things” — the entire old order marked by sin, death, and curse |
| English variants | ”the former things,” “the old order,” “what came before” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Contrasts with καινός (“new”) in vv.1 and 5 — a single, decisive, historical transition, not a repeating dissolution. |
Risk: Medium. Same cyclical-cosmology caution as v.1. |
Revelation 21:5
“And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’”
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | Idou kaina poiō panta |
| Literal meaning | ”Behold, I make all things new” |
| Semantic range (ποιέω) | To make, do, create/accomplish |
| English variants | ”I am making all things new,” “I make everything new” |
| Contextual theological meaning | God himself speaks for the first time directly in Revelation (elsewhere mediated through angels or the exalted Christ); the verb is present tense — a work already underway, climaxing rather than beginning at this point. Grounds Sovereignty of God over History. |
Risk: Medium. ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ must be read as total re-creation by a personal, speaking God, not an impersonal cosmic renewal-cycle. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | houtoi hoi logoi pistoi kai alēthinoi eisin |
| Literal meaning | ”these words are faithful/trustworthy and true” |
| Semantic range (πιστός) | Faithful, trustworthy, reliable (same root family as πίστις, baseline reuse: faith → ನಂಬಿಕೆ); (ἀληθινός) genuine, real, not counterfeit |
| English variants | ”trustworthy and true,” “faithful and true,” “sure and certain” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Divine self-authentication of prophetic Scripture; ties to Inspiration of Scripture, already High-risk in the baseline registry, and to Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation — the visions are symbolic in form but trustworthy and true in substance. |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ಈ ಮಾತುಗಳು ನಂಬಿಗಸ್ತವೂ ಸತ್ಯವೂ ಆಗಿವೆ (ī mātugaḷu nambigastavū satyavū āgive). Risk: Medium. ನಂಬಿಗಸ್ತ shares the root of baseline-reuse ನಂಬಿಕೆ (faith); keep consistent across the curriculum so learners connect trustworthy divine speech with the same root as saving trust in Christ. |
Revelation 21:6
“And he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.’”
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Greek | Γέγονεν |
| Transliteration | Gegonen |
| Literal meaning | ”It has happened / it is done” |
| Semantic range (γίνομαι, perfect tense) | Completed action with continuing effect — “it is finished/accomplished” |
| English variants | ”It is done,” “It has come to pass,” “It is finished” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Echoes Christ’s cry from the cross (John 19:30, “It is finished”) — the whole redemptive plan reaches its intended goal; grounds Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil. |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ಆಗಿಹೋಯಿತು (āgihōyitu). Risk: Low. Should visibly echo the crucifixion cry translation used elsewhere in the Gospels for theological resonance. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | egō [eimi] to Alpha kai to Ō, hē archē kai to telos |
| Literal meaning | ”I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end” |
| Semantic range | Ἄλφα/Ὦ = first/last letters of the Greek alphabet, a merism for total comprehensiveness; ἀρχή = beginning/origin/source; τέλος = end/goal/completion |
| English variants | ”Alpha and Omega,” “the First and the Last,” “the Beginning and the End” |
| Contextual theological meaning | A divine self-identification (also used of Christ, 22:13) asserting absolute sovereignty over the entire span and meaning of history — Sovereignty of God over History in its purest form, and (when applied to Christ in 22:13) direct evidence for Deity of Christ, already Critical in the baseline. |
Risk: Medium. Established convention (matching most Kannada Bible translations and the baseline system prompt’s transliteration standard) is to retain the Greek letter-names Ālphā/Ōmegā rather than substitute a Kannada/Sanskrit equivalent (e.g., “ಅಕಾರ-ಕ್ಷಕಾರ”, first-and-last Kannada letters), which would obscure the cross-lingual, universally recognized divine title. Always pair with the gloss ಆದಿಯೂ ಅಂತ್ಯವೂ. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | tō dipsōnti dōsō ek tēs pēgēs tou hydatos tēs zōēs dōrean |
| Literal meaning | ”to the one who thirsts I will give from the spring of the water of life, as a free gift” |
| Semantic range (δωρεάν) | Freely, without payment, as an unearned gift (same conceptual family as baseline reuse χάρις → ಕೃಪೆ, grace) |
| English variants | ”freely,” “without cost,” “as a gift” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Direct restatement of the grace principle central to Romans and now to Revelation’s invitation (repeated 22:17): salvation and eternal life are received, not purchased or earned by ascetic merit. Central to Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil and reinforces the baseline’s Grace doctrine entry. |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ಬಾಯಾರಿದವನಿಗೆ ಜೀವಜಲದ ಬುಗ್ಗೆಯಿಂದ ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಕೊಡುವೆನು (bāyāridavanige jīvajalada bugge yinda ucitavāgi koḍuvenu). Risk: High. ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ (“freely, without cost”) must be preserved without softening; this is the same grace-versus-merit contrast the baseline flags as High risk against both the karma-merit economy and the Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethic (disciplined sacred work/sharing). “ಜೀವಜಲ” (water of life) also risks resonance with sacred-river traditions (Ganga, Kaveri as purifying goddess-rivers); a translator note should clarify this water flows uniquely from the throne of God and the Lamb (22:1), not from any earthly sacred site. |
Revelation 21:7
“The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.”
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | ho nikōn klēronomēsei tauta |
| Literal meaning | ”the one who conquers/overcomes will inherit these things” |
| Semantic range (νικάω) | To conquer, overcome, prevail, win the victory (used seven times in the letters to the churches, ch. 2-3, and repeatedly of Christ’s own victory, 3:21, 5:5, 17:14) |
| English variants | ”the one who overcomes,” “the conqueror,” “the victor” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Not self-achieved spiritual attainment but victory secured through “the blood of the Lamb” (12:11) and appropriated by persevering faith — central to Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution and Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil. |
Risk: High. ಜಯ ಹೊಂದುವವನು (“one who attains victory”) risks being read as a self-attained spiritual accomplishment — closely paralleling the Lingayat devotee’s progressive, self-disciplined ascent through the shatsthala stages toward Aikya, a pattern the baseline already flags as a risk for “calling” and “election.” A translator note must anchor victory in Christ’s finished work (12:11), received by faith, not merit. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | esomai autō theos kai autos estai moi huios |
| Literal meaning | ”I will be to him God, and he will be to me a son” |
| Semantic range (υἱός) | Son, in the sense of full family membership and inheritance rights (baseline reuse family: ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ, adoption) |
| English variants | ”son,” “child,” “heir” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Direct echo of the Davidic covenant formula (2 Sam 7:14) and Paul’s adoption theology (Rom 8:15-17, already High-risk in the baseline); every persevering believer is confirmed, at history’s end, in the permanent, personal, undissolved sonship already granted. |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ನಾನು ಅವನಿಗೆ ದೇವರಾಗಿರುವೆನು ಮತ್ತು ಅವನು ನನಗೆ ಮಗನಾಗಿರುವನು — using baseline reuse ದೇವರು and reinforcing ದತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರತ್ವ (adoption) doctrine. Risk: High. Must be read as a permanent, personal, relational sonship — not a preliminary stage before eventual merger/dissolution of identity into the divine (Aikya), the same distinction the baseline draws for “adoption.” |
Revelation 21:8
“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | tois de deilois kai apistois kai ebdelygmenois kai phoneusin kai pornois kai pharmakois kai eidōlolatrais kai pasin tois pseudesin |
| Literal meaning | ”but to the cowardly, faithless, detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars” |
| Semantic range | δειλός = cowardly, timid (specifically: those who deny Christ under pressure — direct antithesis of Perseverance); ἄπιστος = unbelieving/faithless, direct antonym of baseline-reuse πίστις/ನಂಬಿಕೆ; φάρμακος = one who practices magic arts/sorcery (root of English “pharmacy,” originally poison/potion/spell); εἰδωλολάτρης = idol-worshiper |
| English variants | ”cowardly,” “unbelieving/faithless,” “detestable,” “murderers,” “sexually immoral,” “sorcerers/those who practice magic arts,” “idolaters,” “liars” |
| Contextual theological meaning | The vice-list names those excluded from the New Jerusalem, standing in direct antithesis to “the one who overcomes” (v.7); it grounds Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints. εἰδωλολάτρης (idolater) is doctrinally the most sensitive term for a Kannada readership shaped by multi-deity worship traditions. |
Risk: Critical. ವಿಗ್ರಹಾರಾಧಕರು (“idol-worshipers,” from ವಿಗ್ರಹ, idol/image + ಆರಾಧಕ, worshiper) is the single most sensitive term in this list for a Kannada readership: the same root ಆರಾಧನೆ (worship) is used throughout Revelation itself for legitimate worship of God/the Lamb (see ch. 4-5, 7, 19), so the contrast must remain doctrinally sharp — this is idol-worship specifically, worship misdirected toward images/created things, not a blanket condemnation of the reader’s own family or neighbors. Per the baseline’s “no softening” instruction (universality/exclusivity claims must not be qualified), this term must not be paraphrased away, but pastoral framing in the accompanying teaching notes (not the translation itself) is strongly advised given the missional sensitivity already flagged in the baseline’s “evangelism” doctrine entry. ಮಾಟಗಾರರು (“sorcerers,” from ಮಾಟ, “spell/black magic”) likewise must be read as occult practice condemned by God, not local folk-healing traditions broadly. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | to meros autōn en tē limnē tē kaiomenē pyri kai theiō |
| Literal meaning | ”their portion [will be] in the lake burning with fire and sulfur” |
| Semantic range (λίμνη) | Lake, standing body of water — here used ironically/starkly for a place of burning, the antithesis of the “spring/river of the water of life” |
| English variants | ”lake of fire,” “burning lake,” “lake of fire and brimstone” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Final, decisive, eternal judgment on unrepentant evil — the negative counterpart to Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints, first introduced at 19:20 and elaborated at 20:10,14-15. |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ಬೆಂಕಿಯಿಂದಲೂ ಗಂಧಕದಿಂದಲೂ ಉರಿಯುವ ಕೆರೆ (beṅkiyindalū gandhakadindalū uriyuva kere). Risk: Critical. Kannada readers may assimilate this to the Puranic Naraka system (multiple named hell-realms, e.g., in the Garuḍa Purāṇa) understood as temporary purgation preceding the next rebirth. The lake of fire in Revelation is final and unending, the “second death,” not a stage within an ongoing cycle of rebirth — the same Critical distinction the baseline already draws for ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ (resurrection) versus ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ (reincarnation) must be extended here explicitly. |
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Transliteration | ho estin ho thanatos ho deuteros |
| Literal meaning | ”which is the second death” |
| Semantic range (δεύτερος) | Second, in a fixed ordinal sequence — not repeatable, not one of many |
| English variants | ”the second death” |
| Contextual theological meaning | A single, final, terminal event following bodily resurrection and the Great White Throne judgment (20:11-15) — the ultimate opposite of the eternal life promised to “the one who overcomes” (v.7). |
| Kannada rendering & risk | ಎರಡನೆಯ ಮರಣ (eraḍaneya maraṇa). Risk: Critical. Must not be read through a rebirth-cycle lens in which “death” recurs indefinitely across incarnations; “second” here is a fixed, final ordinal — one death of the body, one final death of separation from God, and no more after that, in either direction (neither escape into further rebirth nor return). Pair consistently with the baseline’s ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ/ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ distinction. |
2. CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER ANALYSIS OF THE WHOLE BOOK
Chapter 1 — Prologue and Vision of the Glorified Christ
| Term (Greek, translit.) | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning in Revelation | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀποκάλυψις (apokalypsis) | “unveiling, uncovering” | Disclosure of hidden things; source of the book’s title | ”revelation,” “apocalypse,” “unveiling” | Names the book’s genre and purpose: God disclosing what must soon take place; grounds Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation. | ಪ್ರಕಟನೆ (prakaṭane, “revelation/disclosure” — established Kannada Bible book title). Risk: Low. |
| μαρτυρία Ἰησοῦ (martyria Iēsou) | “testimony/witness of Jesus” | Legal-forensic witness-bearing; the content and act of testifying to Christ | ”testimony of Jesus,” “witness to Jesus” | Central refrain of the book (1:2,9; 6:9; 12:11,17; 19:10; 20:4) tying Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution to concrete confession, even unto death. (Yēsuvina sākṣi). Risk: High — must retain the forensic, costly sense of public testimony, not softened to private belief. |
| θλῖψις (thlipsis) | “pressure, affliction” | Tribulation, distress, persecution | ”tribulation,” “affliction,” “suffering” | Paul’s ordinary word for suffering (baseline context) here names the shared experience of the seven churches under Roman persecution; grounds Perseverance. | ಸಂಕಟ / ಶ್ರಮೆ (saṅkaṭa/śrame). Risk: Medium-High — must be read as suffering for the faith, not generic misfortune or karmic consequence. |
| παντοκράτωρ (pantokratōr) | “ruler of all, all-powerful one” | Absolute, universal sovereignty and might; LXX rendering for “LORD of Hosts/Shaddai" | "Almighty,” “All-Powerful,” “Ruler of All” | Divine title recurring nine times in Revelation (far more than in Romans), central to Sovereignty of God over History. | ಸರ್ವಸಮರ್ಥನಾದ ದೇವರು (sarva-samarthanāda Dēvaru, “the all-capable/all-powerful God”). Risk: Critical — extends the baseline’s forbidden-substitution logic. The baseline already forbids ಶಕ್ತಿ for “power of God” because Karnataka’s prominent Shakta tradition (Chamundeshwari, tutelary deity of the former Mysore royal house) makes ಶಕ್ತಿ read as a specific divine-feminine power. Because παντοκράτωρ recurs so frequently and prominently in Revelation’s worship scenes, the adjacent adjective ಸರ್ವಶಕ್ತ (built on the same ಶಕ್ತಿ root) must likewise be avoided; ಸಮರ್ಥ/ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ is the required root throughout. |
| ὁ πρῶτος καὶ ὁ ἔσχατος (ho prōtos kai ho eschatos) | “the first and the last” | Merism for total temporal sovereignty, applied to Christ (1:17) | “the First and the Last” | Christ takes the same divine self-description as God in ch. 21-22 — direct evidence for Deity of Christ (baseline Critical doctrine). Risk: Medium; pair consistently with Alpha/Omega usage. |
| αἱ κλεῖς τοῦ θανάτου καὶ τοῦ ᾅδου (hai kleis tou thanatou kai tou hadou) | “the keys of Death and Hades” | Authority/control over death and the realm of the dead | ”keys of Death and Hades” | Christ’s resurrection victory (baseline reuse: ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ) gives him sovereign control over death itself — grounds Return and Reign of Christ. | ಮರಣದ ಮತ್ತು ಹೇಡಸ್ನ ಬೀಗದ ಕೈಗಳು (see Hades entry, ch. 20, for the transliteration rationale). Risk: High. |
| ἄγγελος (angelos) | “messenger” | Heavenly messenger/servant of God, distinct from human messengers | ”angel,” “messenger” | Frequent throughout Revelation as agents of revelation and judgment. | ದೂತ (dūta) — established Kannada Christian term. Risk: Low. |
| ἐκκλησία (ekklēsia) | “assembly, congregation” | The gathered people of God, local and universal | ”church,” “assembly” | The seven churches addressed (chs. 2-3) are concrete, historical congregations. | ಸಭೆ — baseline reuse. Risk: Medium (as recorded). |
Chapters 2–3 — Letters to the Seven Churches
These two chapters share vocabulary and are treated together; each letter repeats a common structural refrain (“he who has an ear, let him hear… to the one who conquers…”).
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὁ νικῶν (ho nikōn) | “the one who conquers/overcomes” | Persevering faith that prevails through trial, martyrdom, or temptation | ”he who overcomes,” “the conqueror,” “the victor” | Refrain closing each of the seven letters; the reward differs each time (tree of life, crown of life, hidden manna, authority over nations, white garment, pillar in the temple, seat on the throne) — grounds Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution. Risk: High (see full treatment at 21:7 above — self-attainment/Aikya-ascent collision risk). |
| τὸ ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς (to xylon tēs zōēs) | “the tree of life” | Access to unending, God-given life; echoes Eden (Gen 2:9; 3:22-24) | “tree of life” | Promised to the overcomer at Ephesus (2:7); resolved fully at 22:2,14,19. | ಜೀವ ವೃಕ್ಷ (jīva vṛkṣa). Risk: Medium — collision with the Hindu/Buddhist kalpavṛkṣa (wish-fulfilling tree) motif; must be clarified as the restored Edenic tree, a gift of grace for healing the nations, not a tree granting wishes through ritual devotion. |
| ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος (ho thanatos ho deuteros) | “the second death” | (first appearance, 2:11) | “second death” | Introduced here as the fate the overcomer will not suffer; resolved fully at 20:6,14 and 21:8. Risk: Critical (see full treatment at 21:8). |
| ἡ συναγωγὴ τοῦ Σατανᾶ (hē synagōgē tou Satana) | “the synagogue of Satan” | Polemical designation for a hostile religious group (2:9; 3:9) | “synagogue of Satan” | Historically specific first-century conflict language. Risk: Low, historically bounded. |
| τὸ μάννα τὸ κεκρυμμένον (to manna to kekrymmenon) | “the hidden manna” | Secret, God-supplied sustenance (echoes Exodus manna) | “hidden manna” | Promised reward at Pergamum (2:17). Risk: Low. |
| ψῆφος λευκή (psēphos leukē) | “a white stone” | Token of acquittal/admission (a juror’s stone or a victor’s token) | “white stone” | Symbol of vindication and a new, secret name (2:17) — ties to Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints. Risk: Low-Medium; note interpretive symbolism. |
| τὸ βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς (to biblion tēs zōēs) | “the book of life” | (first appearance, 3:5) — heavenly register of those who belong to God | ”book of life” | Names, once written, are promised never to be blotted out; resolved fully at 20:12,15; 21:27. Risk: Critical (see full treatment, ch. 20 below). |
| ἡ κλεὶς τοῦ Δαυίδ (hē kleis tou Dauid) | “the key of David” | Messianic authority to open/shut, echoing Isaiah 22:22 | ”key of David” | Christ’s authority over the messianic kingdom — ties to the baseline-reuse Davidic Covenant doctrine (already High risk). Risk: Medium. |
| θύρα ἠνεῳγμένη (thyra ēneōgmenē) | “an open door” | Opportunity/access granted by God | ”open door” | Offered to Philadelphia (3:8) as a missional and salvific opening. Risk: Low. |
| χλιαρός (chliaros) | “lukewarm” | Neither hot nor cold; tepid | ”lukewarm” | Laodicea’s spiritual complacency (3:16) — relevant to Perseverance. Risk: Low. |
| χρυσίον πεπυρωμένον ἐκ πυρός (chrysion pepyrōmenon ek pyros) | “gold refined by/from fire” | Purified, tested wealth/faith | ”gold refined in the fire” | Offered to Laodicea in place of self-sufficient wealth (3:18) — echoes the grace-not-merit pattern (baseline: Grace, High risk). Risk: Low-Medium. |
| στῦλος ἐν τῷ ναῷ τοῦ θεοῦ μου (stylos en tō naō tou theou mou) | “a pillar in the temple of my God” | Permanent, honored standing in God’s presence | ”pillar in the temple of my God” | Promised to Philadelphia’s overcomer (3:12); introduces ναός (temple), resolved at 21:22 where no ναός is needed. Risk: Medium (see ναός treatment, ch. 21). |
Chapters 4–5 — The Heavenly Throne Room and the Lamb
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| θρόνος (thronos) | “throne” | Seat of royal/divine authority | ”throne” | Central image of the entire book (occurs ~45 times); God’s throne (ch. 4), later shared explicitly with the Lamb (22:1,3) — grounds Sovereignty of God over History and Worship of the Lamb. | ಸಿಂಹಾಸನ (siṃhāsana). Risk: High. A common word also used for Hindu deity thrones/seats in temple iconography (e.g., Chamundeshwari’s siṃhāsana at Mysore). Must be clear this is the unique, cosmic throne of the one true God, and — climactically — a single throne shared without division by God and the Lamb, evidence for the Lamb’s full deity. |
| πρεσβύτεροι (presbyteroi), οἱ εἴκοσι τέσσαρες (24 elders) | “elders” | Representative heavenly figures, robed and crowned, seated on lesser thrones around God’s throne | ”the twenty-four elders” | Likely representing the redeemed people of God (12 patriarchs + 12 apostles) in worship — feeds Worship of the Lamb. | ಹಿರಿಯರು (hiriyaru). Risk: Medium — same word used for ordinary local church elders; clarify this is a distinct heavenly representative office, not identical to a congregational eldership title. |
| τὰ ζῷα (ta zōa), “the four living creatures" | "living things/creatures” | Angelic throne-guardian beings (cf. Ezekiel 1, Isaiah 6) | “living creatures,” “beasts” (older translations) | Lead the unceasing worship “Holy, holy, holy” — ties to Worship of the Lamb. | ಜೀವಿಗಳು (jīvigaḷu). Risk: Medium. ಜೀವಿ can evoke the Vedantic/Jain philosophical concept of jīva (the individual bound soul/self within saṃsāra); clarify these are specific, unique angelic beings around God’s throne, not a reference to souls in general or to the jīva-ātman relationship of Vedantic metaphysics. |
| ἅγιος, ἅγιος, ἅγιος (hagios x3) | “Holy, holy, holy” | Triple repetition intensifying absolute holiness (Isaiah 6:3) | “Holy, holy, holy” | The unceasing worship-refrain of the living creatures. Risk: High (as recorded in baseline). |
| ἄξιος (axios) | “worthy” | Deserving, fit, having the right/merit to receive something | ”worthy” | Central question of ch. 5 (“who is worthy to open the scroll?”), answered only by the Lamb who was slain — grounds Worship of the Lamb and Deity of Christ. | ಯೋಗ್ಯ (yōgya). Risk: Medium — must be read as Christ’s unique worthiness by virtue of his sacrificial death and resurrection, not a generalized notion of merit that could assimilate to the very karma-merit economy the baseline’s Grace doctrine warns against. |
| τὸ ἀρνίον (to arnion) | “the Lamb” (diminutive: “little lamb”) | The central christological title of Revelation (occurs 28 times), evoking the Passover lamb and Isaiah’s suffering servant | ”the Lamb,” “the Lamb of God” | The slain-yet-standing/reigning Lamb who alone is worthy to open the scroll and who receives worship equal to God’s — the book’s central image for Return and Reign of Christ, Worship of the Lamb, and Deity of Christ. | ಕುರಿಮರಿ (kurimari). Risk: Critical. Must be clearly distinguished from generic sacrificial-animal imagery in folk Hindu/Shakta goddess worship (animal sacrifice, bali, offered at some regional shrines including to Chamundeshwari); the Lamb of Revelation is a unique, once-slain, now-reigning and worshiped divine figure, not an ongoing ritual offering. A translator note anchoring this to the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ (cf. Romans’ imputed_righteousness/justification doctrines) is required at every occurrence. |
| σφάζω / ἐσφαγμένον (sphazō / esphagmenon) | “to slaughter” / “having been slain” | Sacrificial slaughter, as of a sacrificial victim | ”slain,” “slaughtered” | Describes the Lamb’s death (5:6,9,12; 13:8) — the ground of his worthiness. | ವಧಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ (vadhisalpaṭṭa). Risk: Medium — pair consistently with ಕುರಿಮರಿ. |
| ᾠδὴ καινή (ōdē kainē) | “a new song” | A fresh song of praise, marking a new redemptive act | ”new song” | Sung to the worthy Lamb (5:9) — ties to Worship of the Lamb. Risk: Low. |
| βασιλείαν καὶ ἱερεῖς (basileian kai hiereis) | “a kingdom and priests” | Corporate royal-priestly identity of the redeemed | ”kingdom and priests,” “a kingdom of priests” | Echoes Exodus 19:6; the redeemed community’s identity before God — ties to baseline-reuse ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ (kingdom of God) and the priesthood of all believers. Risk: Medium. ಯಾಜಕರು (priests) must be understood as a status shared by all believers by grace, not a hereditary or caste-based priestly office (paralleling both the Brahmin priestly caste and the Lingayat Jangama teacher-office, both already flagged elsewhere in the baseline for related terms). |
Chapter 6 — The First Six Seals
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σφραγίς (sphragis) | “seal” | A mark of ownership, authentication, or closure | ”seal” | The scroll’s seven seals, opened one by one, releasing successive judgments — grounds Sovereignty of God over History (God alone controls the unfolding of history) and Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation. | ಮುದ್ರೆ (mudre). Risk: High — see fuller treatment at ch. 7 (sealing of the 144,000) below, where the forehead-marking association is most acute. |
| οἱ τέσσαρες ἵπποι (hoi tessares hippoi) | “the four horses” | Symbolic agents of conquest, war, famine, and death | ”four horsemen” | Vivid apocalyptic symbolism requiring explicit interpretive framing — central case study for Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation. Risk: Low (imagery), Medium (interpretive framing needed). |
| ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ ἀρνίου (hē orgē tou arniou) | “the wrath of the Lamb” | Righteous, judicial anger — a striking pairing of “Lamb” (gentleness) with “wrath” (judgment) | “wrath of the Lamb” | The Lamb who was slain is also the coming Judge — ties Worship of the Lamb to Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints. Risk: High. Must preserve the paradox intact — the same Lamb who bore wrath now executes it — without smoothing over the tension into a generic angry-deity trope. |
| αἱ ψυχαὶ τῶν ἐσφαγμένων ὑπὸ τὸ θυσιαστήριον (hai psychai tōn esphagmenōn hypo to thysiastērion) | “the souls of those slain, under the altar” | The martyrs’ souls, crying out for justice | ”souls under the altar” | Direct answer awaited in the vindication of the saints (6:9-11) — grounds Perseverance and Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints. Risk: Medium — clarify “ಆತ್ಮ” here means the departed soul awaiting bodily resurrection, not to be confused with baseline-reuse ಆತ್ಮಿಕ (spiritual, as in ಆತ್ಮಿಕ ವರಗಳು) nor with the impersonal ātman of Vedantic thought. |
Chapter 7 — The Sealing of the 144,000 and the Great Multitude
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σφραγίζω (sphragizō), “seal on the forehead" | "to seal” | To mark for protection and ownership (7:3) | “sealed,” “marked” | God’s people are marked for protection amid judgment — direct positive counterpart to the beast’s mark (ch. 13) and full resolution at 22:4 (“his name will be on their foreheads”). Risk: Critical. Forehead-marking is a live, highly visible sectarian religious practice throughout Karnataka — Lingayat vibhūti (sacred ash), Vaiṣṇava tilaka/namam, Śaiva markings, and kumkum — each publicly signaling religious community identity. God’s seal on believers’ foreheads must be clearly taught as God’s own act of ownership and protection through the Spirit, not a ritual mark applied by human religious practice, and must be sharply distinguished from the beast’s mark (ch. 13) which parodies it. |
| ὄχλος πολύς (ochlos polys) | “a great multitude” | An uncountable crowd, “from every nation, tribe, people, and language" | "great multitude” | Directly grounds Unity of Jews and Gentiles (already High risk in the baseline) at its most expansive — every nation without distinction, resolved further at 21:24-26. Risk: Low-Medium — universality must not be softened (per baseline instruction on universal-scope passages). |
| φοίνικες (phoinikes) | “palm branches” | Festival/victory imagery (cf. Sukkot, and John 12:13) | “palm branches” | Worship posture of the great multitude (7:9). Risk: Low. |
ἔπλυναν τὰς στολὰς αὐτῶν καὶ ἐλεύκαναν αὐτὰς ἐν τῷ αἵματι τοῦ ἀρνίου (leukas … eplynan … en tō haimati tou arniou) | “white robes … washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb” | Paradoxical image: garments made white by being washed in blood | ”washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb,” “white robes” | Salvation/vindication achieved solely through Christ’s atoning death (baseline-reuse ರಕ್ಷಣೆ, salvation) — no admixture of self-effort. Risk: High — must retain the paradox (blood makes white) rather than smoothing it into a generic purity metaphor; ties directly to the baseline’s grace-not-merit doctrine. |
| σκηνώσει ἐπ’ αὐτούς (skēnōsei ep’ autous) | “he will spread his tabernacle over them” | God’s sheltering, tabernacling presence (same root as 21:3) | “shelter them with his presence” | First occurrence of the tabernacling motif fully resolved in the core passage (21:3). Risk: Medium (see full treatment at 21:3). |
Chapters 8–9 — The Seven Trumpets
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σάλπιγξ (salpinx) | “trumpet” | Instrument of alarm, summons, or announcement | ”trumpet” | Seven trumpet-judgments (8:6-9:21) escalate the seal-judgments — case study for Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation. | ತುತ್ತೂರಿ (tuttūri). Risk: Low. |
| θυμίαμα / αἱ προσευχαὶ τῶν ἁγίων (thymiama / hai proseuchai tōn hagiōn) | “incense / the prayers of the saints” | Incense symbolically carrying the prayers of God’s people to his throne | ”incense,” “prayers of the saints” | Ties Prayer and Intercession (baseline Medium-risk doctrine) directly to the unfolding of God’s judgments in history. Risk: Medium — ಧೂಪ (incense) is also central to Hindu puja ritual; clarify this is a symbolic image for prayer’s heavenly reception, not a claim that ritual incense-offering itself has spiritual efficacy. |
| ἡ ἄβυσσος (hē abyssos) | “the abyss, the bottomless pit” | A subterranean prison/holding place for demonic beings (first appearance, 9:1-2) | “bottomless pit,” “the Abyss” | The place from which demonic locust-like beings and (later) the beast (11:7; 17:8) emerge; resolved at 20:1-3 where Satan is bound there. | ಅಗಾಧ ಕೂಪ (agādha kūpa, “bottomless/unfathomable pit”). Risk: Critical. The natural Kannada/Sanskrit-derived word for a subterranean cosmic realm, ಪಾತಾಳ (Pātāḷa), is explicitly rejected: in Puranic cosmology Pātāḷa is one of seven lower worlds, home to Nāgas (serpent-deities) and often depicted as a realm of splendor rather than punishment. ಅಗಾಧ ಕೂಪ avoids importing that specific mythological geography while still conveying a deep, sealed, subterranean confinement. |
| Ἀβαδδών / Ἀπολλύων (Abaddōn / Apollyōn) | “Destruction / Destroyer” | Hebrew and Greek names for the angel-king of the abyss’s locusts (9:11) | “Abaddon,” “Apollyon” | Proper names requiring transliteration; both mean “Destroyer.” | ಅಬದ್ದೋನ್ / ಅಪೊಲ್ಲುಯೋನ್ (transliterated, with gloss “ನಾಶಕ,” destroyer). Risk: Low-Medium. |
| ἀκρίδες (akrides) | “locusts” | Symbolic demonic tormentors, shaped like locusts but with unnatural features | ”locusts” | Vivid apocalyptic imagery requiring explicit interpretive framing. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 10 — The Little Scroll
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| βιβλαρίδιον (biblaridion) | “little scroll” | A small book/scroll, diminutive of βιβλίον | ”little scroll” | John is commanded to eat it; sweet in the mouth, bitter in the stomach (10:9-10) — a picture of the costliness of prophetic ministry, feeding Inspiration of Scripture and Perseverance. Risk: Low. |
| τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ θεοῦ (to mystērion tou theou) | “the mystery of God” | A previously hidden divine plan now revealed (Pauline usage: Rom 11:25; 16:25) | “the mystery of God” | God’s redemptive plan reaching its intended completion (10:7) — ties to Sovereignty of God over History. Risk: Medium. ಮರ್ಮ/ರಹಸ್ಯ can evoke esoteric or tantric “secret knowledge” traditions (guru-transmitted hidden teaching accessible only to initiates); must be clarified as truth that God himself has now openly revealed to all, not privileged spiritual knowledge reserved for an elite. |
Chapter 11 — The Two Witnesses and the Seventh Trumpet
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οἱ δύο μάρτυρες (hoi dyo martyres) | “the two witnesses” | Prophetic figures who testify, are killed, and are raised (11:3-12) | “two witnesses” | Embodies Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution in narrative form — faithful testimony even unto death, vindicated by resurrection. Risk: Medium. |
| τὸ θηρίον τὸ ἀναβαῖνον ἐκ τῆς ἀβύσσου (to thērion to anabainon ek tēs abyssou) | “the beast that rises from the abyss” | First appearance of θηρίον (beast) as an end-times persecuting power | ”the beast from the bottomless pit” | Introduces the beast who kills the two witnesses; fully developed in ch. 13. Risk: High (see ch. 13 for full treatment of ಮೃಗ). |
| ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ κόσμου ἐγένετο τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ αὐτοῦ (hē basileia tou kosmou egeneto tou kyriou hēmōn kai tou Christou autou) | “the kingdom of the world has become [the kingdom] of our Lord and of his Christ” | Decisive transfer of ultimate sovereignty | ”the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord” | Climactic proclamation at the seventh trumpet (11:15) — the thesis statement of The Return and Reign of Christ, reusing baseline ದೇವರ ರಾಜ್ಯ (kingdom of God) and ಕರ್ತ (Lord). Risk: Critical — must be rendered as an accomplished, total, permanent transfer of sovereignty, not one kingdom added alongside other continuing powers. |
Chapter 12 — The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὁ δράκων ὁ μέγας, ὁ ὄφις ὁ ἀρχαῖος (ho drakōn ho megas, ho ophis ho archaios) | “the great dragon, the ancient serpent” | Explicitly identified as “the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world” (12:9) | “the dragon,” “that ancient serpent” | The book’s chief antagonist; his defeat grounds Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil. | ಘೋರ ಸರ್ಪ / ಮಹಾ ಸರ್ಪ (ghōra sarpa/mahā sarpa, “fierce/great serpent”), explicitly glossed with “ಆದಿ ಸರ್ಪ” (the ancient serpent) and identified in-text as ಸೈತಾನ (Satan). Risk: Critical. Serpent (nāga) veneration is a living, widespread devotional practice across Karnataka — nāgakal (serpent stone) shrines stand beside a large proportion of village temples, and Nāgapañcami is a major festival. The text’s own explicit identification of the dragon/serpent as Satan and deceiver (12:9) must be preserved without softening, and translator notes should anticipate that some readers may need explicit teaching that this serpent-symbol is emphatically not a revered nāga-deity. Transliteration “ಡ್ರ್ಯಾಗನ್” was considered and rejected as too foreign/unfamiliar to carry the text’s vivid, threatening imagery for a general readership. |
| Μιχαήλ (Michaēl) | “Michael” | Proper name, the archangel who leads heaven’s armies against the dragon | ”Michael” | Ties to Sovereignty of God over History — evil is opposed and defeated by God’s own heavenly forces, not merely human effort. Risk: Low. |
| ὁ κατήγωρ (ho katēgōr) | “the accuser” | Legal/forensic term: prosecutor, one who brings charges | ”the accuser,” “the accuser of our brothers” | Satan’s role as accuser is decisively ended (“thrown down,” 12:10) — grounds Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil. Risk: Medium. |
| διὰ τὸ αἷμα τοῦ ἀρνίου καὶ διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν (dia to haima tou arniou kai dia ton logon tēs martyrias autōn) | “because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony” | Twin basis of victory: Christ’s atoning death + the believers’ faithful witness | ”by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony” | The single clearest statement in the book that overcoming (νικάω, ch. 2-3, 21:7) is grounded in Christ’s finished work appropriated by testifying faith, not self-effort — directly resolves the risk flagged for ὁ νικῶν above. Risk: High — this verse should be the primary cross-reference anchor whenever ಜಯ ಹೊಂದುವವನು (“overcomer”) appears elsewhere, to prevent merit-based misreading. |
Chapter 13 — The Two Beasts
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| τὸ θηρίον (to thērion) | “the beast” | A monstrous, hybrid political-religious power opposing God, empowered by the dragon | ”the beast” | Central antagonist figure (sea-beast, 13:1-10; earth-beast/false prophet, 13:11-18) — central to Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation and Sovereignty of God over History. | ಮೃಗ (mṛga). Risk: High — must convey a monstrous, God-opposing world-power, not merely a wild animal; requires interpretive framing distinguishing symbolic beast-imagery from any specific ethnic or national group (a sensitivity noted for Evangelism, already Medium-risk in the baseline). |
| ὁ ψευδοπροφήτης (ho pseudoprophētēs) | “the false prophet” | The second beast, deceptively performing signs (named explicitly at 16:13; 19:20; 20:10) | “false prophet” | Direct antithesis of baseline-reuse ಪ್ರವಾದಿ (prophet); ties to Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation. Risk: Medium. |
| τὸ χάραγμα (to charagma) | “the mark” | An engraved/stamped mark of allegiance, on the hand or forehead | ”the mark of the beast” | Parodies God’s seal on believers’ foreheads (ch. 7; 22:4) — grounds Judgment of the Wicked and Perseverance (refusal costs economic survival, 13:17). Risk: High — same forehead-marking sensitivity as the seal of God (ch. 7); the parody relationship between God’s seal and the beast’s mark should be preserved and taught explicitly. |
| ὁ ἀριθμὸς τοῦ θηρίου, χξϛ (666) (ho arithmos tou thēriou) | “the number of the beast, 666” | A number requiring “wisdom” and “calculation” to interpret (13:18) | “the number of the beast,” “666” | Classic case study for Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation — a coded, historically anchored symbol, not an open-ended numerological puzzle. | ಮೃಗದ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ, ೬೬೬ (retain Arabic numerals per baseline citation convention). Risk: Medium-High. Numerology (sacred/lucky numbers, astrological number-calculation) is a live popular practice in Indian folk religion; translator notes should discourage speculative numerological “code-breaking” untethered from the text’s own historical-symbolic logic. |
| τὴν εἰκόνα τοῦ θηρίου (tēn eikona tou thēriou) | “the image of the beast” | An idol-like image demanding worship (13:14-15) | “image of the beast” | Direct parody of true worship (ch. 4-5) — ties to Worship of the Lamb by dark contrast. Risk: Medium. |
Chapter 14 — The Lamb on Mount Zion and the Harvest of the Earth
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| εὐαγγέλιον αἰώνιον (euangelion aiōnion) | “eternal gospel” | The one saving message, here proclaimed universally by an angel (14:6) | “eternal gospel,” “everlasting gospel” | Reuses baseline ಸುವಾರ್ತೆ (gospel), now given cosmic and universal proclamation scope — ties to Sovereignty of God over History. Risk: Medium. |
ἔπεσεν (Babylōn hē megalē … epesen) | “Babylon the great … has fallen” | Symbolic name for the corrupt, idolatrous world-system opposing God (first announcement, 14:8) | “Babylon is fallen” | Fully developed in ch. 17-18 — grounds Judgment of the Wicked. | ಬಾಬಿಲೋನ್ ಬಿತ್ತು/ಬಿದ್ದಿತು (see full treatment, ch. 17-18). Risk: Medium. |
| ὁ οἶνος τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ (ho oinos tou thymou tou theou) | “the wine of the wrath of God” | Judgment poured out without dilution/mixture — a picture of undiluted, full judgment | ”wine of God’s wrath,” “wine of God’s fury” | Grounds Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints. Risk: Medium. |
ἡ ληνὸς τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ (ho therismos … to drepanon … hē lēnos tou thymou tou theou) | “the harvest … the sickle … the winepress of the wrath of God” | Agricultural judgment imagery: reaping and treading grapes | ”harvest,” “sickle,” “winepress of God’s wrath” | Vivid apocalyptic symbolism for final judgment — case study for Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 15 — The Song of Moses and of the Lamb; the Seven Bowls Introduced
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
καὶ ἡ ᾠδὴ τοῦ ἀρνίου (hē ōdē Mōuseōs … kai hē ōdē tou arniou) | “the song of Moses … and the song of the Lamb” | A single unified song linking the Exodus deliverance to the final deliverance in Christ | ”the song of Moses and of the Lamb” | Ties Sovereignty of God over History (one continuous redemptive story, Exodus to Revelation) to Worship of the Lamb. Risk: Medium. |
| αἱ ἑπτὰ φιάλαι (hai hepta phialai) | “the seven bowls” | Shallow libation bowls, here containing the final plagues | ”seven bowls,” “seven vials” | The third and final series of judgments (chs. 15-16), completing God’s wrath — grounds Sovereignty of God over History. | ಏಳು ಬಟ್ಟಲುಗಳು (eḷu baṭṭaḷugaḷu). Risk: Low. |
Chapter 16 — The Seven Bowls Poured Out
No significant new theological vocabulary beyond the bowls (ch. 15) and wrath (ch. 6, 14) already introduced. New proper nouns requiring note:
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ἁρμαγεδών (Harmagedōn) | “Armageddon” | Proper name (Hebrew: Har Megiddo, “mountain of Megiddo”) for the site of final eschatological conflict | ”Armageddon” | Symbolic staging-ground for the final confrontation between God and the beast’s coalition — case study for Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation. | ಅರ್ಮಗೆದೋನ್ (transliteration). Risk: Low. |
Chapter otherwise reviewed in full; reuses ὀργή (wrath), φιάλη (bowl), and beast/false prophet vocabulary already analyzed above.
Chapter 17 — Babylon the Great Prostitute
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἡ πόρνη ἡ μεγάλη (hē pornē hē megalē) | “the great prostitute” | Symbolic figure of idolatrous, seductive, corrupt world-power allied with political rulers | ”the great prostitute,” “the great harlot” | Direct antithesis to the pure Bride of ch. 19 and 21 — grounds Judgment of the Wicked and, by contrast, The Church as Bride of Christ. | ಮಹಾ ವೇಶ್ಯೆ (mahā vēśye). Risk: Medium — a socially sensitive term; must be presented as it functions in the text (a symbolic figure for corrupt, idolatrous power-systems), not as commentary on any individual or group; pastoral care in surrounding teaching material is advised. |
| τὸ μυστήριον (to mystērion) | “mystery” | Here, the hidden symbolic meaning of the woman and the beast, which the angel proceeds to explain (17:5,7) | “mystery” | Demonstrates Revelation’s own self-interpreting method — a key methodological anchor for Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation (the text explains its own symbols). | ಮರ್ಮ / ರಹಸ್ಯ (reuse, ch. 10). Risk: Medium. |
λαοὶ καὶ ὄχλοι εἰσὶν καὶ ἔθνη καὶ γλῶσσαι (ta hydata … laoi kai ochloi kai ethnē kai glōssai) | “the waters … are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages” | Explicit interpretive key given within the text itself | ”the waters you saw … are peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages” | Direct evidence of the book’s built-in, controlled symbolism (contrast open-ended allegorizing) — central to Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 18 — The Fall of Babylon
No major new load-bearing theological terms beyond “Babylon” (introduced ch. 14, developed ch. 17). Notable vocabulary:
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ἔπεσεν, ἔπεσεν Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη (Epesen, epesen Babylōn hē megalē) | “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great” | Prophetic funeral-dirge form (echoes Isaiah 21:9) | “Babylon is fallen, is fallen” | Announces the certain, historical downfall of every idolatrous world-system — grounds Sovereignty of God over History and Judgment of the Wicked. Risk: Medium. |
| Ἐξέλθατε ὁ λαός μου ἐξ αὐτῆς (Exelthate ho laos mou ex autēs) | “Come out of her, my people” | Call to separation from complicity in corrupt systems | ”Come out of her, my people” | Practical, ethical call tied to Sanctification (baseline-reuse doctrine) and Perseverance. Risk: Medium. |
| οἱ ἔμποροι τῆς γῆς (hoi emporoi tēs gēs) | “the merchants of the earth” | Symbolic of complicit economic systems built on injustice/idolatry | ”merchants of the earth” | Ties economic/commercial life to spiritual allegiance — relevant to Sovereignty of God over History. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 19 — Hallelujah, the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, and the Rider on the White Horse
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ἁλληλούϊα (Hallēlouia) | “Praise Yah(weh)!” | Hebrew liturgical exclamation, transliterated even in Greek | ”Hallelujah” | The only NT occurrences of this word cluster here (19:1,3,4,6) — grounds Worship of the Lamb. | ಹಲ್ಲೆಲೂಯಾ — established transliteration per baseline system prompt. Risk: Low. |
| ὁ γάμος τοῦ ἀρνίου (ho gamos tou arniou) | “the marriage/wedding of the Lamb” | The consummation of the covenant relationship between Christ and his people | ”the marriage supper of the Lamb,” “the wedding feast of the Lamb” | Central image for The Church as Bride of Christ, resolved fully in ch. 21. Risk: High — see full treatment of “Bride” at 21:2 above (bhakti bridal-mysticism collision: this is the corporate church’s consummation, not an individual devotee’s private mystical marriage to God). |
| ἡ νύμφη αὐτοῦ ἡτοίμασεν ἑαυτήν (hē nymphē autou hētoimasen heautēn) | “his bride has made herself ready” | The church’s own responsive holiness, itself enabled by grace (19:8 clarifies: “it was granted her to clothe herself”) | “his bride has made herself ready” | Balances Sanctification (Spirit-enabled) against any suggestion of self-earned readiness — the text itself supplies the grace-qualifier (“it was granted her”), a key resource against merit-based misreading. Risk: High — translator note should highlight the immediately following clause (“it was given her,” ἐδόθη αὐτῇ) to preserve the grace-basis of this readiness. |
| τὰ δικαιώματα τῶν ἁγίων (ta dikaiōmata tōn hagiōn) | “the righteous deeds of the saints” | Righteous acts flowing from (not producing) right standing | ”righteous acts of the saints,” “righteous deeds of God’s holy people” | Directly touches the baseline’s Critical-risk doctrine of imputed/forensic righteousness (ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ, ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ); these deeds are fruit, not the ground, of righteousness. Risk: Critical — must not be read as the works that earn/establish righteousness before God, contradicting the baseline’s ಆರೋಪಿತ ನೀತಿ entry; these are the visible fruit of a righteousness already credited. |
| ὁ Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ (ho Logos tou Theou) | “the Word of God” | Personal divine title for the rider on the white horse (echoes John 1:1,14) | “the Word of God” | Direct evidence for Deity of Christ — Christ himself is named, as a person, “the Word of God.” (Dēvara vākya). Risk: High — must be understood here as a personal name/title for Christ himself, not merely “Scripture” or an abstract “message”; the same phrase is used elsewhere for the written Scriptures, so context must disambiguate. |
| Βασιλεὺς βασιλέων καὶ Κύριος κυρίων (Basileus basileōn kai Kyrios kyriōn) | “King of kings and Lord of lords” | Superlative title of absolute, unrivaled sovereignty | ”King of kings and Lord of lords” | The definitive title for Return and Reign of Christ, reusing baseline ಕರ್ತ. Risk: Critical — per the baseline’s ಕರ್ತ entry, must convey an exclusive, singular, supreme sovereign, not one great king/lord distinguished only by degree among comparable kings/lords (a risk given India’s rich historical memory of many regional kingdoms and enthroned deities). |
| ἡ λίμνη τοῦ πυρὸς τῆς καιομένης ἐν θείῳ (hē limnē tou pyros tēs kaiomenēs en theiō) | “the lake of fire burning with sulfur” | (first full narrative occurrence, 19:20 — beast and false prophet thrown in) | “lake of fire” | Grounds Judgment of the Wicked; fully defined at 20:14 and echoed at 21:8. | ಬೆಂಕಿಯ ಕೆರೆ (reuse, see 21:8 treatment). Risk: Critical (as above). |
Chapter 20 — The Thousand Years, the Final Judgment of Satan, and the Great White Throne
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χίλια ἔτη (chilia etē) | “a thousand years” | A specific, bounded period of Christ’s reign (occurs 6 times in this chapter alone) | “a thousand years,” “the millennium” | Central to The Return and Reign of Christ; interpreted variously across Christian traditions (a live area of doctrinal diversity to be handled carefully but without doctrinal flattening). | ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳು (sāvira varṣagaḷu). Risk: High. Risk of assimilation into the cyclical yuga cosmology of mainstream Hindu thought (Krita/Tretā/Dvāpara/Kali yugas, vast repeating cosmic ages measured in the millions of years, within an eternally recurring cycle). Must be taught as a specific, bounded, historically real period within a single linear history moving toward a final, non-repeating consummation (ch. 21-22), not one age within an eternal cosmic cycle. |
| ᾅδης (Hadēs) | “Hades” | The realm/personification of the dead, paired with “Death” and finally destroyed (20:13-14) | “Hades,” “the realm of the dead” | Distinguished from both “death” as an event and “the abyss” as a place of demonic confinement; grounds Judgment of the Wicked. | ಹೇಡಸ್ (transliteration, retained as a proper name paired with “ಮರಣ,” Death, as in the Greek’s personification “Death and Hades”). Risk: Critical. The natural existing Kannada gloss ಪಾತಾಳ (Pātāḷa) is rejected here for the same reason given under “Abyss” (ch. 8-9): its strong, specific association with the Puranic Nāga-loka. Following the baseline’s established practice for other proper-noun-like terms that lack a safe native equivalent (cf. ಮೆಸ್ಸೀಯ, ಅಬ್ಬಾ), Hades is transliterated rather than translated. |
| ἡ ἀνάστασις ἡ πρώτη (hē anastasis hē prōtē) | “the first resurrection” | (baseline reuse root: ἀνάστασις → ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ) A resurrection distinguished from a later, general resurrection | ”the first resurrection” | Extends the baseline’s Critical-risk Resurrection doctrine into an end-times sequence unique to Revelation. Risk: Critical (inherits the baseline’s Critical flag: never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ). |
κατὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν (to biblion tēs zōēs … ta biblia … kata ta erga autōn) | “the book of life … the books … according to their deeds” | Two distinct heavenly records: (1) the register of those who belong to God by grace, and (2) records of deeds, used at final judgment | ”book of life,” “the books,” “judged according to what they had done” | The Great White Throne judgment (20:11-15) is the definitive scene for Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints. Risk: Critical. This is the single sharpest collision point in the whole book with popular Hindu folk belief: Chitragupta, the divine scribe-assistant to Yama (the god of death), is widely known in Indian tradition as the keeper of a ledger recording every soul’s deeds (karma), determining the soul’s next rebirth. Revelation’s “books of deeds” and “book of life” must be carefully distinguished from this karma-ledger picture: the “book of life” records those who belong to God by grace, through the Lamb (already written before final judgment, cf. 13:8; 17:8), while the “books of deeds” confirm/display (not determine by merit-accumulation toward a next incarnation) the justice of God’s one-time, final judgment. A translator/teaching note explicitly distinguishing these two heavenly books from each other, and both from the Chitragupta ledger tradition, is required. |
| ἡ λίμνη τοῦ πυρός (hē limnē tou pyros) | “the lake of fire” | Final, eternal destiny of Satan, Death, Hades, and all not found in the book of life | ”lake of fire” | The definitive judgment scene; Critical as previously analyzed (19:20; 21:8). Risk: Critical (as above; must not be read as a temporary purgatorial Naraka preceding rebirth). |
Chapter 21 (verses 9-27) — The New Jerusalem Described
(Verses 1-8 constitute the core passage, fully treated in Section 1 above.)
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ναός (naos) | “temple, sanctuary” | The inner sanctuary, God’s dwelling-place structure | ”temple” | Climactic negation: “I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb” (21:22) — the entire cultic-mediation system is rendered unnecessary by God’s direct, unmediated presence. | ದೇವಾಲಯ (dēvālaya). Risk: Medium. ದೇವಾಲಯ is also commonly used for Hindu temple structures; here the risk runs the opposite direction from usual — the text itself denies the need for a temple building, which is a positive theological payoff (direct access to God) that should be highlighted, not obscured, in teaching notes. |
τὸ τεῖχος (ta themelia … hoi pylōnes … to teichos) | “the foundations … the gates … the wall” | Architectural description with the names of the twelve tribes (baseline reuse: ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲ್) on the gates and the twelve apostles (baseline reuse: ಅಪೊಸ್ತಲ) on the foundations | ”foundations,” “gates,” “wall” | Symbolically unites the whole people of God, old and new covenant, in a single city — reinforces Unity of Jews and Gentiles. Risk: Low. |
| ἡ δόξα τοῦ θεοῦ (hē doxa tou theou) | “the glory of God” | (baseline reuse: δόξα → ಮಹಿಮೆ) God’s radiant presence, here said to be the city’s very light source | ”the glory of God” | Directly resolves the baseline’s Deity-of-Christ-adjacent doctrine of Glory: the city needs no sun or moon because God’s glory and the Lamb (again placed together as co-equal light-sources) illumine it. | ದೇವರ ಮಹಿಮೆ (baseline reuse). Risk: High (as recorded in baseline). |
| ἡ δόξα καὶ ἡ τιμὴ τῶν ἐθνῶν (hē doxa kai hē timē tōn ethnōn) | “the glory and honor of the nations” | The nations’ own honor/wealth brought into the New Jerusalem, redeemed and offered up | ”the glory and honor of the nations” | Universal, redeemed diversity within the eternal city — extends Unity of Jews and Gentiles to its furthest horizon. Risk: Medium. |
| τὸ βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς τοῦ ἀρνίου (to biblion tēs zōēs tou arniou) | “the book of life of the Lamb” | Entry into the city restricted to those written in this specific register | ”the Lamb’s book of life” | Final safeguard clause (21:27) — nothing unclean enters; only those written in the Lamb’s book of life. Risk: Critical (inherits the Book of Life risk from ch. 20 above, now explicitly tied to the Lamb rather than to accumulated deeds). |
Chapter 22 — The River of Life, the Tree of Life, and the Epilogue
| Term | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Kannada rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ποταμὸν ὕδατος ζωῆς (potamon hydatos zōēs) | “a river of the water of life” | A river flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb | ”river of the water of life” | Resolves the invitation of 21:6 and 22:17 into concrete final fulfillment — grounds The New Heaven and New Earth. | ಜೀವಜಲದ ನದಿ (jīvajalada nadi). Risk: Medium. Collision risk with sacred-river veneration (Ganga, Kāvēri as purifying, quasi-divine rivers in Hindu devotion); must be clear this river flows specifically and only from “the throne of God and of the Lamb” (22:1), not from any earthly geography, and conveys life as a gift, not merit accrued through ritual bathing. |
| τὸ ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς (to xylon tēs zōēs) | “the tree of life” | (reuse, ch. 2) — now bearing twelve kinds of fruit, its leaves for “the healing of the nations" | "tree of life” | Final, universal restoration and healing — extends Unity of Jews and Gentiles and New Heaven and New Earth. | ಜೀವ ವೃಕ್ಷ (reuse). Risk: Medium (as at ch. 2; kalpavṛkṣa collision). |
| οὐκ ἔσται ἔτι κατάθεμα (ouk estai eti katathema) | “there will no longer be any curse” | The Genesis 3 curse on creation, definitively reversed | ”no longer any curse” | Ties the entire biblical storyline (Fall to New Creation) together — grounds The New Heaven and New Earth and Sovereignty of God over History. | ಇನ್ನು ಶಾಪವಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (śāpa). Risk: Medium. ಶಾಪ is a vivid, well-known word in Kannada epic/folklore (sage’s curses driving Ramayana/Mahabharata plots); already the standard, correct word for the Genesis curse in Kannada Bibles, so risk is low at the lexical level but a teaching note should anchor this specifically to the Genesis Fall-curse being reversed, not a generic mythological curse-motif. |
| ὁ θρόνος τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἀρνίου (ho thronos tou theou kai tou arniou) | “the throne of God and of the Lamb” | A single, shared throne (singular θρόνος, not two thrones) | “the throne of God and of the Lamb” | The clearest single grammatical evidence in the book for the full, undivided Deity of Christ — God and the Lamb share one throne. Risk: Critical — the singular “throne” (not “thrones”) must be preserved grammatically in Kannada; any rendering implying two separate thrones would weaken this key deity-of-Christ evidence. |
| βασιλεύσουσιν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων (basileusousin eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn) | “they will reign forever and ever” | The redeemed people’s permanent, personal participation in Christ’s reign | ”they will reign forever and ever” | The book’s final statement on Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil and The Return and Reign of Christ. Risk: High. Must be read as the redeemed remaining distinct persons who reign in ongoing relationship with God and the Lamb — not, per the baseline’s recurring caution, an eventual merger/dissolution of individual identity into the divine sovereignty (the Veerashaiva Aikya pattern already flagged Critical for salvation, resurrection, and lordship). |
οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί (ginou pistos … houtoi hoi logoi pistoi kai alēthinoi) | “be faithful … these words are trustworthy and true” | (reuse, 21:5) | “these words are trustworthy and true” | Final divine authentication of the whole prophecy — Inspiration of Scripture. Risk: Medium (as above). |
| ἡ ῥίζα καὶ τὸ γένος Δαυίδ, ὁ ἀστὴρ ὁ λαμπρὸς ὁ πρωϊνός (hē rhiza kai to genos Dauid, ho astēr ho lampros ho prōinos) | “the root and descendant of David, the bright morning star” | Dual messianic self-title: Davidic heir (baseline reuse: ದಾವೀದ, seed_of_david doctrine) and cosmic “morning star" | "root and offspring of David, the bright morning star” | Fuses Davidic Covenant with Messianic Promise (both already Critical/High in the baseline). Risk: High. “Morning star” risks being read through the lens of astrology (jyotiṣa), a widespread and culturally normalized practice in Karnataka (personal horoscopes, auspicious-timing consultation); must be clarified as a messianic self-title fulfilling Numbers 24:17, not an astrological or planetary-deity reference. |
| Τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ νύμφη λέγουσιν, Ἔρχου (To pneuma kai hē nymphē legousin, Erchou) | “the Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come‘“ | Joint invitation of the Spirit (baseline reuse: ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ) and the Bride/church (reuse ವಧು) | “the Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come‘“ | Final missionary invitation of the whole book — ties Church as Bride of Christ to ongoing gospel proclamation. | ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮನೂ ವಧುವೂ, “ಬಾ” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ (reuse ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ, ವಧು). Risk: High (inherits Bride risk from 21:2/19:7). |
| ὁ διψῶν ἐρχέσθω, ὁ θέλων λαβέτω ὕδωρ ζωῆς δωρεάν (ho dipsōn erchesthō, ho thelōn labetō hydōr zōēs dōrean) | “let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without cost” | (reuse δωρεάν, 21:6) | “take the water of life without price” | Final, universal, grace-based invitation — the book’s last major doctrinal statement, closing the grace/merit theme that runs from Romans through Revelation. Risk: High (as at 21:6 — grace, not merit; sacred-river collision noted). |
| χάρις τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ μετὰ πάντων (charis tou kyriou Iēsou meta pantōn) | “the grace of the Lord Jesus be with all” | Closing epistolary benediction (baseline reuse: χάρις → ಕೃಪೆ) | “the grace of the Lord Jesus be with all” | Closes the book exactly as Paul closes his letters — situates Revelation within the same grace-centered theological framework as Romans. Risk: High (as recorded for ಕೃಪೆ in baseline). |
