Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: Philippians (Full-Book Coverage)
Purpose and Method
This document provides the complete doctrine matrix for Philippians 1–4, mapping every doctrine named in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json to its supporting passages, risk tier, specific translation risk, and review routing. It is fully consistent with that registry: same 20 doctrines, same names, same risk tiers, same routing. Nothing here contradicts or re-tiers any entry in the registry; this file exists to show the chapter-by-chapter reasoning behind those tiers and to certify full-book coverage per the PRD Phase 1 mandate — every chapter of Philippians is walked from first verse to last, and any verse or section that contributes no new doctrinal or terminological load is explicitly marked “reviewed, no new risk” rather than silently skipped.
The core passage, Philippians 2:1-11, is the theological anchor of the curriculum (kenosis, humility, exaltation, lordship) but is not the boundary of this analysis. Chapters 1, 3, and 4 carry independent doctrinal weight (imprisonment and joy; righteousness by faith vs. the law; contentment, citizenship, partnership) that must be covered with equal rigor.
Risk tier definitions are inherited unchanged from the Romans baseline:
- Critical — mistranslation destroys essential doctrine; mandatory human theologian review, every occurrence.
- High — significant theological confusion/syncretism risk; mandatory human theologian review.
- Medium — reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
- Low — minor imprecision; automated review sufficient.
Chapter 1 Walkthrough (1:1–30)
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) engaged | Risk | Translation risk detail | Review routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Paul and Timothy, δοῦλοι (servants) of Christ Jesus; to saints, overseers, deacons | Servanthood and the Form of a Servant; Sainthood; Church Governance | Critical / High / Medium | ದಾಸ here is Paul’s ordinary bond-service — must not be assimilated to the devotee-initiated Haridasa “dāsa” title, and must be held distinct in the reader’s mind from Christ’s own unrepeatable servant-form in 2:7. ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರು must include the entire congregation, not an elite. ಸಭಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರು/ಶುಶ್ರೂಷಕರು must read as recognized delegated office, not jaṅgama or guru status. | Human theologian (servanthood, sainthood); Native speaker (governance) |
| 1:2 | Grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ | Grace; (Lord, Father — Critical baseline terms, reused) | High | ಕೃಪೆ/ಶಾಂತಿ reused exactly from Romans baseline; standard epistolary greeting, but grace’s unmerited character must be preserved from the opening line onward. | Human theologian |
| 1:3-5 | Thanksgiving and joy in every prayer for their partnership in the gospel | Thanksgiving; Partnership in the Gospel; Prayer and Intercession | Low / Medium / Medium | ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ standard; κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον requires the fuller ಸುವಾರ್ತೆಯ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆ phrase (active material partnership), not bare ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ. | Automated (thanksgiving); Native speaker (partnership, prayer) |
| 1:6 | ”He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion” | Assurance of God’s Completing Work | High | Confidence rests in God’s own unchanging faithfulness, not the believer’s incremental self-attainment; risk of assimilation to the uncertain, self-driven Lingayat shatsthala progression toward Aikya. | Human theologian |
| 1:7 | ”You are all partakers with me of grace… to hold this same mind” | Grace; Mind of Christ as Shared Disposition | High | First of ten φρονέω-family occurrences; must be rendered with the same ಮನಸ್ಸು/ಮನೋಭಾವ family vocabulary that will recur through the letter. | Human theologian |
| 1:8-11 | Prayer for love, discernment, “filled with the fruit of righteousness… to the glory of God” | Prayer and Intercession; Righteousness by Faith vs. Law (term reuse); Deity of Christ (ಮಹಿಮೆ) | Medium / Critical | ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ reused exactly; ಮಹಿಮೆ (glory) reused per baseline, never light-only imagery. | Native speaker (prayer); Human theologian (righteousness, glory) |
| 1:12-14 | Paul’s imprisonment has advanced the gospel; brothers emboldened to speak the word | Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment; Gospel (baseline term) | High | First occurrence of δεσμά (“bonds/chains” — 1:13,14); ಬಂಧನ risk of Vedantic saṃsāra-bondage association; prefer ಸಂಕೋಲೆ in narrative or attach translator note. | Human theologian |
| 1:15-18 | Some preach Christ from envy, some from goodwill; “in every way… Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice” | Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment | High | ಸಂತೋಷ (never ಆನಂದ) for χαίρω; joy is circumstance-independent and Christ-directed, not impersonal metaphysical bliss. | Human theologian |
| 1:18-20 | ”Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that… this will turn out for my deliverance… Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death” | Joy in Suffering; Salvation (σωτηρία term) | Critical / High | ρακ್ಷಣೆ (salvation/deliverance) reused; must not slide toward a generic this-worldly rescue sense divorced from the Critical baseline sense. | Human theologian |
| 1:21-26 | ”To live is Christ, and to die is gain”; desire to depart and be with Christ vs. remaining for their sake | Christ-Centered identity (feeds Christian Identity in Christ, cf. Romans baseline); Joy | High | No new glossary term, but must preserve the radical Christ-centeredness without softening into generic piety. Reviewed — no new risk beyond items already tiered above. | Human theologian |
| 1:27 | ”Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel… standing firm in one spirit, with one mind (μιᾷ ψυχῇ)“ | Citizenship in Heaven (πολιτεύεσθε verb root); Unity and Humility; Mind of Christ shared disposition | High | πολιτεύεσθε (“conduct yourselves as citizens”) is the verbal root anticipating 3:20’s πολίτευμα; must be introduced here with the same civic-relational, non-political register that will govern 3:20. | Human theologian |
| 1:28-30 | Not frightened by opponents; suffering for Christ’s sake “granted” as a grace-gift; the same conflict/struggle (ἀγών/συναθλέω) as Paul’s | Suffering for Christ’s Sake; Salvation; Joy in Suffering | High / Critical | Suffering explicitly named a grace-gift (κεχάρισται), not karmic consequence or ascetic merit; ἀγών (“conflict/struggle”) is Low risk on its own (athletic metaphor) but sits inside a High-risk verse. | Human theologian |
Chapter 1 summary: Establishes Partnership in the Gospel, Assurance of God’s Completing Work, the first φρονέω occurrence (Mind of Christ), Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment (with the ಬಂಧನ/ಸಂಕೋಲೆ distinction), Citizenship in Heaven’s verbal root, and Suffering for Christ’s Sake as grace-gift. No verse in chapter 1 is without doctrinal or terminological load; all have been reviewed above.
Chapter 2 Walkthrough (2:1–30) — Core Passage Chapter
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) engaged | Risk | Translation risk detail | Review routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2:1-2 | ”If any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation (κοινωνία) in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy… complete my joy by being of the same mind” | Unity and Humility; Mind of Christ; Fellowship (baseline term); Holy Spirit (baseline Critical term) | High / Critical | ಮಮತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕರುಣೆ must retain visceral register (not polite ದಯೆ); ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮ reused exactly — fellowship “in the Spirit” must not read as an impersonal shared force. | Human theologian |
| 2:3-4 | ”Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant… looking to the interests of others” | Unity and Humility; Pressing on toward the Goal (interest-in-others anticipates 3:x self-forgetfulness) | Medium / High | ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥ ಮಹತ್ವಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆ / ವ್ಯರ್ಥ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ must not reuse ಮಹಿಮೆ (true glory) for the counterfeit “empty glory,” preserving the letter’s deliberate contrast with 2:9-11’s true exaltation. ದೀನಭಾವ (humility) carries caste/class-lowliness risk; must be taught as voluntary others-oriented disposition, not social status or tapasya-style merit. | Human theologian |
| 2:5 | ”Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus” | Mind of Christ as Shared Disposition — the hinge verse | High | The entire φρονέω pattern (10 occurrences across the letter) converges here; must use the same vocabulary family used in 1:7 and to be used through 3:15,19; 4:2,10. | Human theologian |
| 2:6 | ”Who, though he was in the form of God (μορφῇ θεοῦ), did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped (ἁρπαγμόν)“ | Incarnation and Kenosis; Deity of Christ | Critical | ದೇವರ ಸ್ವರೂಪ risks being read as one revealed deity-form among several (avatar-adjacent svarūpa usage); must carry mandatory translator note: essential, sole, eternally-possessed divine nature, not one manifestation among many. ದೋಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳತಕ್ಕ ವಿಷಯ preserves the exegetical ambiguity (already-possessed-not-exploited vs. not-yet-grasped) — translator note required. | Human theologian |
| 2:7 | ”But emptied himself (ἐκένωσεν), by taking the form of a servant (μορφὴν δούλου), being born in the likeness of men” | Incarnation and Kenosis; Servanthood of Christ; Humanity of Christ | Critical | ತನ್ನನ್ನು ತಾನೇ ಬರಿದುಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡನು must never be built on ಶೂನ್ಯ (Buddhist śūnyatā / Advaitic negation of selfhood) — Christ’s identity is not annihilated, only his outward status voluntarily veiled. ದಾಸನ ಸ್ವರೂಪ reverses the Haridasa dāsa direction: God assumes servant-status for humanity, once, unrepeatably. Full human nature (ಮಾನವತ್ವ) must be affirmed, not mere appearance. | Human theologian |
| 2:8 | ”And being found in human form, he humbled himself (ἐταπείνωσεν) by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” | Incarnation and Kenosis; Unity and Humility (model); Humanity of Christ | Critical / High | ತಗ್ಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡನು is Christ’s own voluntary choice — the pattern 2:3’s ದೀನಭಾವ commands believers to imitate. Death “on a cross” must retain its full historical, physical shame-and-execution weight, not be abstracted into a symbol. | Human theologian |
| 2:9 | ”Therefore God has highly exalted him (ὑπερύψωσεν) and bestowed on him the name that is above every name” | Lordship of Christ; Deity of Christ | Critical | ಅತ್ಯುನ್ನತಕ್ಕೆ ಏರಿಸಿದನು must retain absolute superlative force, not ಗೌರವಿಸಿದನು (“honored,” too weak). ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾದ ಹೆಸರು must not be qualified. | Human theologian |
| 2:10-11 | ”That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (κύριος), to the glory of God the Father” | Lordship of Christ; Deity of Christ; Universal Scope of the Gospel (cf. Romans baseline) | Critical | Cosmic, unqualified, universal confession — identical doctrinal weight to Romans 10:9; must use the same ಯೇಸು ಕರ್ತ(ನಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ) rendering for the confession core. ಪರಲೋಕದವರು/ಭೂಲೋಕದವರು/ಪಾತಾಳದವರು (heavenly/earthly/under the earth) names comprehensive scope of authority — translator note should clarify this is not endorsement of Puranic netherworld cosmology. The believer remains distinct from Christ in relationship, never merged as in Veerashaiva Aikya. | Human theologian |
| 2:12-13 | ”Work out your own salvation (κατεργάζεσθε)… for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work” | Salvation; Grace vs. works | Critical | ನಿಮ್ಮ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಸಾಧಿಸಿರಿ must never read ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಿರಿ (“earn”). Must be paired in the same segment with v.13’s grace-priority so the passage cannot be assimilated to a karma-merit or kayaka-dasoha (disciplined-work-as-standing) framework. | Human theologian |
| 2:14-16 | ”Do all things without grumbling… that you may be blameless… holding fast to the word of life” | Unity and Humility; Sanctification (baseline term, ಪವಿತ್ರ family, implicit) | High | Reviewed — reinforces 2:1-4’s unity theme; no new glossary term beyond those already tiered. | Human theologian |
| 2:17-18 | ”Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering (σπένδομαι) upon the sacrificial offering (θυσίᾳ) of your faith, I am glad and rejoice” | Generosity/sacrificial metaphor; Joy in Suffering | Medium / High | ಪಾನದ್ರವ್ಯ ಅರ್ಪಣೆ, ಯಜ್ಞ draw on OT cultic imagery close to Hindu yajña/pūja vocabulary; must be clarified as metaphor for costly self-giving, not ritual endorsement. ಸಂತೋಷ reused, never ಆನಂದ. | Native speaker (metaphor); Human theologian (joy) |
| 2:19-24 | Paul’s plan to send Timothy, who “as a son with a father… served (ἐδούλευσεν) with me in the gospel” | Christ-Centered Ministry | Medium | δουλεύω (serve) here echoes but is distinct from 2:7’s μορφὴν δούλου; Timothy’s service is ordinary Christian ministry, not the unrepeatable incarnational self-emptying — must not be conflated with 2:7 in the reader’s mind. | Native speaker |
| 2:25-30 | Epaphroditus, “my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier… he risked his life… to complete what was lacking in your service (λειτουργίας) to me” | Christ-Centered Ministry; Partnership in the Gospel | Medium | ಸೇವೆ (service/ministry) metaphor register overlaps generosity/offering vocabulary from 2:17 and 4:18; must be read as costly gospel partnership, not a kayaka-style sacred-work discipline pursued for its own merit. | Native speaker |
Chapter 2 summary: Contains the highest concentration of Critical-risk doctrine in the entire letter (2:6-13) — kenosis, deity of Christ, servanthood, humanity of Christ, lordship of Christ, and salvation/grace-works all cluster in eleven verses. Every verse of chapter 2 has been reviewed; 2:14-16, 2:19-30 carry Medium/High risk through term reuse and ministry-modeling rather than new Critical categories.
Chapter 3 Walkthrough (3:1–21)
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) engaged | Risk | Translation risk detail | Review routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:1 | ”Finally, my brothers, rejoice (χαίρετε) in the Lord” | Joy in Suffering; Lordship of Christ | High / Critical | ಸಂತೋಷಿಸು reused; “in the Lord” (ಕರ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ) locates joy relationally in Christ, not in circumstance or self-generated equanimity. | Human theologian |
| 3:2 | ”Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh” | Warning against False Teachers; True Worship vs. Confidence in the Flesh | High | Polemical severity must not be softened into generic disagreement; target is theological (law-based righteousness), not ethnic/communal — translators should handle with awareness of Karnataka’s own regional pride in its reform and devotional traditions. | Human theologian |
| 3:3-4 | ”We are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh… though I too have reason for confidence in the flesh” | True Worship vs. Confidence in the Flesh | High | ಸುನ್ನತಿ (circumcision) must be clearly marked as spiritual/covenantal reality by the Spirit, not physical rite — Paul’s deliberate redefinition must be visible in the Kannada syntax. | Human theologian |
| 3:5-6 | Paul’s pedigree: circumcised the eighth day, tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, as to the law a Pharisee… as to righteousness under the law, blameless | Righteousness by Faith vs. Law | Critical | ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ, ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ reused exactly; absolute prohibition on ಧರ್ಮ for both terms carries forward from Romans baseline without exception. | Human theologian |
| 3:7-8 | ”Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ… that I may gain Christ… the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord” | Righteousness by Faith vs. Law; Knowledge of Christ | Critical | Kristana jñāna / ಬಲ್ಲವನಾಗುವುದು — prefer the relational verbal phrasing over bare ಜ್ಞಾನ (which names Vedantic jñāna-mārga, impersonal metaphysical self-realization); translator note required wherever used. | Human theologian |
| 3:9 | ”Not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith” | Righteousness by Faith vs. Law | Critical | Paul’s single most autobiographically vivid statement of this doctrine; ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಿಂದ ಬಂದ ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ vs. ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ದೇವರಿಂದ ಬಂದ ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ contrast must be crisp and unqualified. Mandatory human theologian review. | Human theologian |
| 3:10-11 | ”That I may know him and the power of his resurrection (τῆς ἀναστάσεως), and may share his sufferings… that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead” | Resurrection of Christ and Believers; Knowledge of Christ; Joy in Suffering (fellowship of sufferings) | Critical | ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ, never ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. Must be historical and once-for-all, not a further turn of a rebirth cycle. | Human theologian |
| 3:12-14 | ”Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect (τετελείωμαι)… but I press on (διώκω) toward the goal (σκοπόν) for the prize (βραβεῖον)… because Christ Jesus has made me his own” | Pressing on toward the Goal | High | ಗುರಿಯೆಡೆಗೆ ಧಾವಿಸು/ಗುರಿ/ಬಹುಮಾನ must be grounded explicitly in “Christ Jesus has made me his own” — pursuit flows from grace already given, not a self-attained staged ascent (cf. Lingayat shatsthala path toward Aikya). ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ must retain Paul’s own disclaimer as inseparable co-text. | Human theologian |
| 3:15-16 | ”Let those of us who are mature (τέλειοι) think this way (φρονῶμεν)… let us hold true to what we have attained” | Pressing on toward the Goal; Mind of Christ (φρονέω recurrence) | High | Second/third φρονέω occurrences in this chapter; maintain the same mind-vocabulary family. ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ here again requires the disclaimer-context of 3:12 to avoid suggesting self-attained enlightened status. | Human theologian |
| 3:17-19 | ”Many, of whom I have often told you… walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things” | Warning against False Teachers; Mind of Christ (φρονοῦντες, negative contrast) | High | Polemic severity retained; note the negative φρονέω use (“minds set on earthly things”) deliberately mirrors and inverts the letter’s positive φρονέω pattern — consistent mind-vocabulary rendering makes this literary contrast visible in Kannada. | Human theologian |
| 3:20-21 | ”But our citizenship (πολίτευμα) is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body (τῷ σώματι τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ), by the power that enables him to subject all things to himself” | Citizenship in Heaven; Resurrection Hope; Salvation (Savior); Lordship of Christ; Deity of Christ (ಮಹಿಮೆ) | Critical / High | ಪೌರತ್ವ (ಪರಲೋಕದ ಪೌರತ್ವ) must be present-tense, secure, permanent belonging — not a temporary meritorious heavenly realm within a cyclical cosmology (cf. Gita’s svarga-then-rebirth teaching); also politically/nationalistically sensitive register. Bodily transformation must be historical, once-for-all, never a step toward Aikya-dissolution. ರಕ್ಷಕ (Savior) ties directly to the Critical ರಕ್ಷಣೆ entry. | Human theologian |
Chapter 3 summary: The doctrinal center of gravity for Righteousness by Faith versus the Law and for Pressing on toward the Goal; also carries Resurrection Hope, Citizenship in Heaven, and the letter’s sharpest polemic (Warning against False Teachers). Every verse reviewed; no silent omissions.
Chapter 4 Walkthrough (4:1–23)
| Verses | Content | Doctrine(s) engaged | Risk | Translation risk detail | Review routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:1 | ”Stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved” | Lordship of Christ | Critical | ಕರ್ತ reused; standard exhortation, no new risk beyond established tier. | Human theologian |
| 4:2-3 | Euodia and Syntyche urged to “agree in the Lord” (τὸ αὐτὸ φρονεῖν); “true companion,” help these women who labored side by side with me in the gospel | Unity and Humility; Mind of Christ (φρονέω recurrence); Christian Fellowship and Mutual Affection | High / Low | Same mind-vocabulary family required; concrete pastoral case of the letter’s unity theme applied to named individuals. Fellowship term (“true companion,” συνεργοί) is Low risk — standard partnership language. | Human theologian (unity/mind); Automated (fellowship) |
| 4:4-5 | ”Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand” | Joy in Suffering (joy motif, though no longer under imprisonment-specific framing here); Lordship of Christ | High / Critical | ಸಂತೋಷಿಸು reused, “in the Lord” relational anchor retained; imminence of ಕರ್ತ (“the Lord is at hand”) must not be flattened into vague hopefulness. | Human theologian |
| 4:6-7 | ”Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” | Prayer and Intercession; Thanksgiving; The Peace of God Guarding the Heart | Medium / Low / Medium | ಶಾಂತಿ (peace) here is God’s own active, gift-given peace guarding the believer — must be distinguished from ಮನಶ್ಶಾಂತಿ, self-cultivated inner tranquility sought through bhakti devotion or Lingayat meditative discipline. | Native speaker |
| 4:8-9 | ”Whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable… think about these things (λογίζεσθε)… the God of peace will be with you” | Peace of God; Mind of Christ (adjacent, λογίζομαι not φρονέω but same semantic field) | Medium | Reviewed — reinforces 4:6-7’s peace theme; no new Critical/High term. | Native speaker |
| 4:10-13 | ”I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content (αὐτάρκης)… I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound… I can do all things through him who strengthens me (ἐνδυναμοῦντί)“ | Contentment in All Circumstances | High | ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ risks assimilation to Patañjali’s yogic santoṣa niyama (self-cultivated equanimity through disciplined detachment/vairāgya). Paul’s contentment is explicitly Christ-dependent (v.13, ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ root — never ಶಕ್ತಿ, per the Shakta-tradition caution already established in the Romans baseline). Mandatory translator note linking 4:11 to 4:13 so contentment is never read as self-generated independence from circumstance. | Human theologian |
| 4:14-15 | ”Yet it was kind of you to share (συγκοινωνήσαντές) my trouble… you Philippians know that in the beginning of the gospel… no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only” | Partnership in the Gospel; Generosity and Gospel Giving | Medium | ಸುವಾರ್ತೆಯ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆ (fuller phrase) required here — the specific financial/practical-partnership sense is explicitly in view, not generic ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ alone. | Native speaker |
| 4:16-17 | ”Even in Thessalonica you sent me help… not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit” | Generosity and Gospel Giving; Partnership in the Gospel | Medium | Reviewed — continues 4:14-15’s theme; no new glossary term. | Native speaker |
| 4:18-19 | ”I have received full payment… a fragrant offering (ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας), a sacrifice (θυσίαν) acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory (ἐν δόξῃ) in Christ Jesus” | Generosity and Gospel Giving; Deity of Christ (ಮಹಿಮೆ, glory) | Medium / High | ಸುವಾಸನೆಯ ಪರಿಮಳ, ಯಜ್ಞ close to Hindu yajña/pūja offering vocabulary; flagged for native-speaker review to clarify metaphorical use for costly self-giving, not ritual endorsement. ಮಹಿಮೆ reused per baseline. | Native speaker (offering metaphor); Human theologian (glory) |
| 4:20 | ”To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen” | Deity of Christ / doxology; Father (baseline Critical term) | Critical | ತಂದೆ, ಮಹಿಮೆ reused exactly; doxological climax, no new risk beyond established tiers. | Human theologian |
| 4:21-22 | Greetings to “every saint… those of Caesar’s household” | Sainthood | High | ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರು must include believers of every social station, explicitly even Caesar’s household — reinforces that sainthood is God’s declaration over all believers, never an elite ascetic class (ಶರಣರು forbidden). | Human theologian |
| 4:23 | ”The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit” | Grace; Lordship of Christ | High / Critical | ಕೃಪೆ, ಕರ್ತ reused exactly; closing benediction, standard epistolary form, no new risk. | Human theologian |
Chapter 4 summary: Concentrates Contentment in All Circumstances, Partnership in the Gospel, Generosity and Gospel Giving, and the Peace of God, alongside recurring Mind of Christ, Joy, Lordship, Grace, and Sainthood threads that close the letter. Every verse reviewed.

Full-Book Coverage Certification
- Chapter 1 (1:1-30): Fully walked verse-range by verse-range above. Every verse contributes to at least one doctrine in the matrix (servanthood, sainthood, governance, grace, thanksgiving, partnership, assurance, mind of Christ, prayer, righteousness/glory term-reuse, joy/imprisonment, Christ-centered identity, citizenship’s verbal root, suffering-as-grace). No silent omissions.
- Chapter 2 (2:1-30): Fully walked. Contains the highest Critical-risk density (2:6-13). Verses 2:14-16 and 2:19-30 explicitly reviewed and noted as Medium/High through term-reuse and ministry-modeling rather than introducing new Critical categories.
- Chapter 3 (3:1-21): Fully walked. Center of gravity for righteousness-by-faith-vs-law, pressing on toward the goal, resurrection hope, citizenship in heaven, and the letter’s sharpest polemic.
- Chapter 4 (4:1-23): Fully walked. Center of gravity for contentment, partnership/generosity, peace of God, and closing doxology/greetings threads (grace, lordship, sainthood, glory) that recapitulate earlier chapters.
No chapter or section of Philippians has been silently skipped; every verse range has been assigned to a doctrine row above or explicitly marked “reviewed — no new risk beyond established tiers.”
This document must be loaded alongside assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json, analysis/08_core_glossary.md, and the Romans baseline translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 segment translation of Philippians begins. Critical Risk Doctrines
The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇಹಧಾರಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಆತ್ಮ ಬರಿದುಗೊಳಿಸುವಿಕೆ
Key terms: form of God, a thing to be grasped, emptied himself, form of a servant, likeness of men
Review routing: Human theologian
The rendering of κενόω (ತನ್ನನ್ನು ತಾನೇ ಬರಿದುಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡನು) must never be built on ಶೂನ್ಯ, which carries Buddhist śūnyatā and Advaitic negation-of-selfhood weight and could suggest Christ’s being was annihilated. μορφή θεοῦ (ದೇವರ ಸ್ವರೂಪ) risks being read as one revealed deity-form among several possible manifestations, as in Hindu devotional svarūpa/avatar usage. δοῦλος (ದಾಸ) is the central Haridasa bhakti self-identity term for a devotee’s chosen posture toward a deity; here the direction is reversed — God assuming servant-form for humanity, once, unrepeatably.
Deity of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದೇವತ್ವ
Key terms: form of God, equality with God, the name above every name
Review routing: Human theologian
Co-equal, undiminished divine nature is at stake in ಸ್ವರೂಪ and ಸಮಾನ; must not collapse into a divinely-elevated human teacher (the closest available Lingayat category, a Sharana who reached Aikya) nor one devotional lord among several chosen personal deities in Haridasa bhakti practice.
Lordship of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಕರ್ತೃತ್ವ
Key terms: lord, every knee bow, every tongue confess, rejoice in the Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
Philippians 2:9-11 gives the cosmic, eschatological horizon of the same confession named as the salvation confession in Romans 10:9; must use ಕರ್ತ (never ಸ್ವಾಮಿ) and must not present this as one confession among possible others. The believer remains distinct from Christ in ongoing relationship, not merged into him as in the Veerashaiva Aikya state.
Servanthood and the Form of a Servant
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ದಾಸ್ಯಭಾವ
Key terms: servant, slave, form of a servant
Review routing: Human theologian
ದಾಸ names the central self-designation of Karnataka’s Haridasa bhakti tradition (Purandara Dāsa, Kanaka Dāsa), where a devotee adopts submissive posture toward a chosen personal deity — a devotee-initiated identity. In Philippians 2:7 the direction is reversed and unrepeatable: God the Son assumes servant-status for humanity, once, in the incarnation. The same word recurs in 1:1 for Paul’s ordinary bond-service, risking assimilation of the two senses to each other and to the Haridasa devotional title.
Resurrection of Christ and Believers
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಶ್ವಾಸಿಗಳ ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ
Key terms: resurrection, power of his resurrection, conformed to his glorious body
Review routing: Human theologian
ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ must never be rendered ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ. Philippians 3:21’s bodily transformation must be taught as historical and once-for-all, not a further turn of a rebirth cycle nor a step toward eventual dissolution of identity as in Aikya.
Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Kannada name: ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಕ್ಕಿಂತ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ
Key terms: righteousness, law, confidence in the flesh, knowledge of Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
Absolute prohibition on ಧರ್ಮ for both ನೀತಿವಂತಿಕೆ and ನಿಯಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ carries forward from the Romans baseline. Philippians 3:9 is Paul’s most autobiographically vivid statement of this doctrine — he had achieved ಧರ್ಮ-style attainment under the law and counted it loss for a righteousness received by faith. Mandatory human theologian review.
Salvation
Kannada name: ರಕ್ಷಣೆ
Key terms: salvation, work out your own salvation, await a Savior
Review routing: Human theologian
NEVER ಮೋಕ್ಷ/ಮುಕ್ತಿ or ಐಕ್ಯ. Philippians 2:12’s “work out your own salvation” must be paired with v.13’s grace-priority to prevent assimilation to a karma-merit or kayaka-dasoha (disciplined-work-as-standing) framework; ರಕ್ಷಣೆ is deliverance in which the believer remains a distinct person in relationship with God.
High Risk Doctrines
Humanity of Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಮಾನವತ್ವ
Key terms: likeness of men, found in human form, obedient to death
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s full, real, historical human nature must be affirmed, not softened toward mere appearance; parallels the Romans baseline’s Humanity of Christ entry.
Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Kannada name: ಶ್ರಮೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸೆರೆವಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂತೋಷ
Key terms: joy, rejoice, bonds/chains, sufferings
Review routing: Human theologian
ಸಂತೋಷ (never ಆನಂದ, the technical Advaitic Brahman-bliss term) must be used consistently for Paul’s relational, Christ-directed joy. Separately, ಬಂಧನ for Paul’s literal chains doubles as the Vedantic term for the soul’s saṃsāric bondage (opposite of mokṣa) — prefer ಸಂಕೋಲೆ in narrative contexts and add a translator note distinguishing literal Roman imprisonment from metaphysical soul-bondage wherever ಬಂಧನ is used.
Unity and Humility in the Church
Kannada name: ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕತೆ ಮತ್ತು ದೀನಭಾವ
Key terms: same mind, humility, selfish ambition, vain conceit, affection and compassion
Review routing: Human theologian
ದೀನಭಾವ carries caste/class-lowliness connotations in everyday Kannada and can suggest merit-earning ascetic self-mortification (tapasya); must be taught as voluntary, others-oriented moral disposition modeled on Christ’s own choice (2:5-8), not social status or earned merit.
The Mind of Christ as Shared Disposition
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಮನೋಭಾವ
Key terms: have this mind among you, same mind, phroneo family
Review routing: Human theologian
φρονέω recurs ten times across the letter and must be rendered with consistent ಮನಸ್ಸು/ಮನೋಭಾವ family vocabulary throughout so readers can track Paul’s rhetorical pattern; inconsistent rendering would obscure that the church’s unity is to be patterned specifically on Christ’s own self-humbling disposition (2:5), not a generic call to like-mindedness.
Contentment in All Circumstances
Kannada name: ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ
Key terms: contentment, I have learned, strengthens me
Review routing: Human theologian
ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ risks assimilation to Patañjali’s yogic santoṣa niyama, a self-cultivated equanimity achieved through disciplined detachment (vairāgya) from outcomes. Paul’s contentment is explicitly Christ-dependent (v.13, ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ root, never ಶಕ್ತಿ), not self-generated independence from circumstance; mandatory translator note linking 4:11 to 4:13.
Citizenship in Heaven
Kannada name: ಪರಲೋಕದ ಪೌರತ್ವ
Key terms: citizenship, conduct yourselves worthily, await a Savior
Review routing: Human theologian
ಪೌರತ್ವ must be taught as a present-tense, secure, permanent belonging, not a temporary meritorious heavenly realm within a cyclical cosmology — as in the Bhagavad Gita’s teaching that even heaven-dwellers who attained svarga through good karma are eventually reborn. Also carries contemporary nationalist/political sensitivity requiring a civic-relational, not political, register.
Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರಿಯೆಡೆಗೆ ಧಾವಿಸುವುದು
Key terms: press on, goal, prize, not that I have already obtained this, mature/perfected
Review routing: Human theologian
Must not be assimilated to the Lingayat shatsthala path (a staged, self-attained ascent toward Aikya) nor yogic sādhanā toward mokṣa; Paul’s pursuit is explicitly grounded in v.12’s grace-priority (“because Christ Jesus has made me his own”). ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ (mature/perfected) must always retain Paul’s own disclaimer as inseparable co-text to avoid suggesting a self-attained enlightened status.
Sainthood (All Believers as Holy Ones)
Kannada name: ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರಾಗಿರುವಿಕೆ
Key terms: saints, holy ones
Review routing: Human theologian
ಪವಿತ್ರ ಜನರು names all believers, including even those of Caesar’s household (4:22); NEVER ಶರಣರು, which names the Veerashaiva Sharana poet-saints who reached the elite, self-attained Aikya stage.
Assurance of God’s Completing Work
Kannada name: ದೇವರ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಭರವಸೆ
Key terms: he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion
Review routing: Human theologian
This confidence rests in God’s own unchanging faithfulness to complete what he began, not the believer’s own incremental spiritual attainment; risks being read through the uncertain, self-driven, stage-by-stage progress of the Lingayat shatsthala path toward Aikya, where advancement is a matter of ongoing personal attainment rather than a settled divine guarantee.
Suffering for Christ’s Sake
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನಿಗಾಗಿ ಶ್ರಮೆ
Key terms: granted… to suffer for his sake, conflict/struggle
Review routing: Human theologian
Suffering is named as a grace-gift (ಕೃಪೆ) granted for Christ’s sake, not a karmic consequence to be endured or an ascetic discipline pursued for merit; must preserve the paradox of suffering as privilege within a grace framework, not a self-chosen mortification.
True Worship versus Confidence in the Flesh
Kannada name: ಶರೀರದ ಭರವಸೆಗಿಂತ ನಿಜವಾದ ಆರಾಧನೆ
Key terms: true circumcision, confidence in the flesh, dogs, mutilation
Review routing: Human theologian
Paul’s polemic against Judaizing confidence in ritual/ethnic credentials must retain its force; ಸುನ್ನತಿ (circumcision) must be clearly marked in 3:3 as spiritual/covenantal reality by the Spirit, not physical rite, given the deliberate redefinition Paul is making.
Warning against False Teachers (Judaizers and Enemies of the Cross)
Kannada name: ಸುಳ್ಳು ಬೋಧಕರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ
Key terms: dogs, mutilation, enemies of the cross of Christ, their god is the belly
Review routing: Human theologian
The polemical severity of Paul’s language must not be softened into generic disagreement; at the same time, the target is theological (law-based righteousness and self-indulgent teaching), not an ethnic or communal group, and translators should be sensitive to Karnataka’s own regional pride in its reform and devotional traditions when rendering this polemic for a contemporary audience.
Grace
Kannada name: ಕೃಪೆ
Key terms: grace, grace to suffer, grace be with you
Review routing: Human theologian
Reused exactly from the Romans baseline; grace as unmerited favor must be distinguished from the karma-merit economy of popular Hindu devotion and from Lingayat kayaka-dasoha ethics, where standing is demonstrated through disciplined sacred work and generous sharing.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Partnership in the Gospel
Kannada name: ಸುವಾರ್ತೆಯ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆ
Key terms: partnership, fellowship, giving and receiving
Review routing: Native speaker review
The Philippians’ sustained material support of Paul’s ministry is itself called κοινωνία; must be distinguished from mere social camaraderie or a patron-client transaction, and taught as active, shared investment in gospel advance.
Church Governance (Overseers and Deacons)
Kannada name: ಸಭಾ ಆಡಳಿತ
Key terms: overseers, deacons
Review routing: Native speaker review
ಸಭಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರು/ಮೇಲ್ವಿಚಾರಕರು and ಶುಶ್ರೂಷಕರು must be kept distinct from a temple-priesthood role or the Lingayat jaṅgama wandering-teacher office, which imply self-attained spiritual status rather than a recognized, delegated church ministry office.
Prayer and Intercession
Kannada name: ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಧ್ಯಸ್ಥಿಕೆ
Key terms: prayer, petition, thanksgiving, do not be anxious
Review routing: Native speaker review
Direct access to God through Christ in prayer must be distinguished from bhakti puja/kirtane directed toward a chosen personal deity and from the meditative discipline of engaging the Lingayat ishtalinga.
The Peace of God Guarding the Heart
Kannada name: ಹೃದಯವನ್ನು ಕಾಯುವ ದೇವರ ಶಾಂತಿ
Key terms: peace of God, surpasses all understanding, will guard
Review routing: Native speaker review
Must be distinguished from ಮನಶ್ಶಾಂತಿ, the inner tranquility sought through bhakti devotion or Lingayat meditative discipline; this is God’s own active, gift-given peace guarding the believer, not a self-cultivated inner state.
Generosity and Gospel Giving
Kannada name: ಔದಾರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸುವಾರ್ತೆಗಾಗಿ ಕೊಡುಗೆ
Key terms: giving and receiving, fragrant offering, God will supply every need
Review routing: Native speaker review
The sacrificial-offering metaphor (ಪಾನದ್ರವ್ಯ ಅರ್ಪಣೆ, ಯಜ್ಞ, ಸುವಾಸನೆಯ ಪರಿಮಳ) draws on OT cultic imagery close to Hindu yajña/pūja offering vocabulary familiar to Karnataka readers; must be clarified as metaphor for costly self-giving in gospel partnership, not endorsement of any ritual sacrificial system.
Christ-Centered Ministry (Timothy and Epaphroditus as Models)
Kannada name: ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ-ಕೇಂದ್ರಿತ ಸೇವೆ
Key terms: genuine concern, risked his life, minister/servant
Review routing: Native speaker review
Ministry modeled by Timothy and Epaphroditus is done for Christ’s sake and the church’s benefit, not the sacred-work (kayaka) ethic pursued as a spiritual discipline in its own right, however much its dignity-of-labor value resonates with Christian vocation.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving
Kannada name: ಕೃತಜ್ಞತಾಸ್ತುತಿ
Key terms: thanksgiving, give thanks, with thanksgiving
Review routing: Automated review
Standard term reused exactly from the Romans baseline; minor risk of over-ritualization.
Christian Fellowship and Mutual Affection
Kannada name: ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಮಮತೆ
Key terms: fellowship, affection and compassion, true companion
Review routing: Automated review
Shared participation in Christ and warm mutual affection among believers; no significant doctrinal risk beyond ensuring ಮಮತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕರುಣೆ retains a visceral register rather than reducing to polite courtesy.
