Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 1 Peter (English–Hindi)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning 1 Peter 1–5. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans/Galatians translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json are marked [TM-reuse] and MUST be rendered exactly as recorded there — no alternatives are permitted for these regardless of new context. New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked [NEW] and require entry into translation_memory.json before Phase 2 translation begins, per the AI Translation Requirements’ term-registration procedure.
Risk tiers follow the baseline’s definitions (Critical / High / Medium / Low) and drive Phase 2 review routing.

B. New Terms Introduced by 1 Peter
| # | English Term | Hindi Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine(s) | Key Passages | Alternatives Rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 41 | suffering (πάσχω/πάθημα) | दुख / दुख उठाना | dukha / dukha uṭhānā | Critical | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake; Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | 1:11; 2:19-23; 3:14,17,18; 4:1,13,15,19; 5:1,9,10 | (none available — दुख is the only viable general Hindi term) | The letter’s single most frequent and doctrinally load-bearing term. दुख/दुःख collides with two major Indian religious frameworks: (1) Buddhist duḥkha, the First Noble Truth, which frames suffering as an inherent feature of existence to be transcended through enlightenment/detachment; (2) the popular Hindu framework in which suffering is read as karmic consequence of past deeds (see also sowing_and_reaping caution in the Galatians baseline). 1 Peter’s suffering theology is neither: suffering here is meaningful participation in Christ’s own pattern (2:21; 4:13), productive of tested faith (1:6-7) and future glory (4:13; 5:10), endured in hope under a personal, faithful Creator (4:19) — not something to escape via enlightenment, nor a debt being paid off. Mandatory translator note on every Critical/High occurrence; mandatory theologian review throughout. |
| 42 | living hope (ἐλπὶς ζῶσα) | जीवित आशा | jīvita āśā | High | Living Hope of the Resurrection | 1:3 | आशा alone (loses the resurrection-grounded certainty; risks reading as mere wish) | The letter’s opening keynote term; आशा alone can register as an uncertain expectation adjacent to भाग्य/किस्मत-style fatalism already flagged in the baseline; जीवित is the load-bearing qualifier and must never be dropped. |
| 43 | inheritance (κληρονομία) | मीरास | mīrāsa | High | Living Hope of the Resurrection | 1:4 | विरासत (acceptable secondary; कमाई हुई सम्पत्ति — “earned property” — explicitly rejected as merit-implying) | Consistent with the baseline’s वारिस (heir) family; must be read as an unconditional gift secured by God’s own custody (τετηρημένην ἐν οὐρανοῖς), not merit-earned family inheritance under Indian succession custom. |
| 44 | imperishable (ἄφθαρτος) | अविनाशी | avinaśī | Medium | Living Hope of the Resurrection | 1:4,23 | अमर (rejected — risks generic “immortal,” used broadly of gods/heroes in Hindu literature without the specific corruption/decay contrast) | Describes durability of God’s gift, not shared divine essence. |
| 45 | undefiled (ἀμίαντος) | निष्कलंक | niṣkalaṅka | Low-Medium | Living Hope of the Resurrection | 1:4 | अशुद्ध-रहित (awkward compound, rejected) | |
| 46 | unfading (ἀμάραντος / ἀμαράντινος) | अनश्वर | anaśvara | Medium | Living Hope of the Resurrection; Elders and Humility | 1:4; 5:4 | मुरझाया न जानेवाला (acceptable literal alternative, more cumbersome) | Rendered identically at both occurrences (crown of glory, 5:4) to preserve the letter’s internal echo. |
| 47 | guarded (φρουρούμενοι) | सुरक्षित रखे हुए | surakṣita rakhe hue | Medium | Living Hope of the Resurrection | 1:5 | बचाए हुए (too close to उद्धार’s semantic field; rejected to avoid redundancy) | Active divine guarding, not passive luck/fate. |
| 48 | various trials (ποικίλοι πειρασμοί) | विभिन्न परीक्षाएँ | vibhinna parīkṣāeṃ | High | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 1:6; 4:12 | कर्म-फल के दुख (explicitly rejected — imports karmic-consequence framing) | Must read as purposeful testing under a personal God’s providence, never automatic karmic outcome. |
| 49 | tested genuineness [of faith] (δοκίμιον) | परखा हुआ विश्वास | parakhā huā viśvāsa | High | Living Hope of the Resurrection; Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 1:7 | तपस्या से सिद्ध विश्वास (rejected — tapasya/ascetic-merit framing) | Suffering proves, does not produce, genuine faith. |
| 50 | outcome/goal [of faith] (τέλος) | परिणाम | pariṇāma | Medium | Living Hope of the Resurrection | 1:9 | प्रतिफल (rejected — “recompense for deeds,” merit-payment framing) | |
| 51 | sojourners / exiles (παρεπίδημοι/πάροικοι) | परदेशी | paradeśī | High | Submission to Authority; Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 1:1,17; 2:11; 5:13 | विदेशी (rejected — too narrowly “foreigner,” loses theological identity force) | The letter’s governing self-identity metaphor; NOT a call to social withdrawal (2:12-17 qualifies it). |
| 52 | conduct (ἀναστροφή) | चालचलन | cālacalana | Low-Medium | Holiness in Conduct | 1:15; 2:12; 3:1,2,16 | व्यवहार (acceptable secondary; चालचलन preferred as the more established Hindi Christian idiom) | Key recurring behavioral term for the Holiness doctrine. |
| 53 | (reverent) fear (φόβος, of God) | भय | bhaya | High | Submission to Authority; Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 1:17; 2:17,18; 3:2,15 | डर (rejected — carries connotation of servile terror, not reverence) | Reverential awe before a just Father-Judge, distinguished from आदर given to the emperor (2:17) to preserve God’s unique claim. |
| 54 | precious blood (τίμιον αἷμα) | बहुमूल्य लहू | bahumūlya lahū | Critical | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | 1:19 | बलि का लहू (rejected — assimilates to ritual-offering vocabulary the baseline explicitly cautions against) | |
| 55 | without blemish or spot (ἄμωμος καὶ ἄσπιλος) | निर्दोष और निष्कलंक | nirdoṣa aura niṣkalaṅka | High | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | 1:19 | (none) | Passover/sacrificial-lamb background; needs OT gloss. |
| 56 | living and abiding word (λόγος ζῶν καὶ μένων) | जीवित और सदा ठहरनेवाला वचन | jīvita aura sadā ṭaharanevālā vacana | High | Living Hope of the Resurrection | 1:23 | ॐ-शैली अनन्त शब्द (explicitly rejected — must not evoke the eternal cosmic syllable/mantra concept) | God’s own enduring self-disclosure, not an impersonal eternal utterance. |
| 57 | slander (καταλαλιά) | चुगली | cugalī | Medium | Holiness in Conduct | 2:1; 2:12; 3:16 | निंदा (rejected — reserved elsewhere for the Critical condemnation contrast; avoided here to prevent cross-term confusion) | |
| 58 | pure spiritual [word-]milk (λογικὸν γάλα) | वचन का शुद्ध दूध | vacana kā śuddha dūdha | Medium | Living Hope of the Resurrection; Holiness in Conduct | 2:2 | आत्मिक दूध (acceptable but loses the λόγος/1:23 word-connection; rejected as primary) | Ties λογικόν back to the “living word” of 1:23. |
| 59 | living stone (λίθος ζῶν) | जीवित पत्थर | jīvita patthara | High | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 2:4,5 | (none) | Without “living,” the metaphor loses its christological force. |
| 60 | cornerstone (ἀκρογωνιαῖος) | कोने का प्रधान पत्थर | kone kā pradhāna patthara | Medium | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 2:6,7 | (none) | |
| 61 | spiritual house (οἶκος πνευματικός) | आत्मिक घर | ātmika ghara | Medium | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 2:5 | मन्दिर (rejected — घर preferred as मन्दिर risks a physical-temple reading and Hindu-temple association per baseline’s church entry caution) | |
| 62 | holy priesthood (ἱεράτευμα ἅγιον) | पवित्र याजकपद | pavitra yājakapada | Critical | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 2:5 | पुजारी-वर्ग (explicitly and permanently rejected) | याजक is the established biblical term (OT Levitical priests); पुजारी denotes a Hindu ritual specialist mediating access others lack — the exact hierarchy this verse abolishes by declaring ALL believers priests. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence. |
| 63 | royal priesthood (βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα) | राजकीय याजकपद | rājakīya yājakapada | Critical | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 2:9 | (see ἱεράτευμα above) | |
| 64 | chosen race/people (γένος ἐκλεκτόν) | चुना हुआ वंश | cunā huā vaṃśa | Critical | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 2:9 | जाति (permanently and explicitly forbidden) | जाति is the standard Hindi word for the Indian caste category; using it here would make the verse sound like it installs believers into a new spiritually superior caste rather than abolishing caste-based spiritual ranking. वंश (already used for “seed”/lineage in the Galatians TM) avoids this collision. Mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review. |
| 65 | holy nation (ἔθνος ἅγιον) | पवित्र राष्ट्र | pavitra rāṣṭra | Medium | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 2:9 | पवित्र जाति (rejected, same caste-collision reasoning as #64) | |
| 66 | people for [his] possession (λαὸς εἰς περιποίησιν) | परमेश्वर की अपनी प्रजा | Parameśvara kī apanī prajā | Medium | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 2:9 | (none) | |
| 67 | day of visitation (ἐπισκοπή) | निरीक्षण का दिन | nirīkṣaṇa kā dina | Medium | Submission to Authority | 2:12 | दर्शन का दिन (explicitly rejected — दर्शन evokes a devotee’s sight of a deity’s presence) | |
| 68 | submit / be subject (ὑποτάγητε) | अधीन हो जाओ | adhīna ho jāo | High | Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance | 2:13,18; 3:1,5; 5:5 | दासता स्वीकार करना (rejected — collapses voluntary submission into forced slavery-status) | Must be voluntary, gospel-motivated, Christ-modeled submission “for the Lord’s sake” (2:13), NOT grounded in inherent inferiority — the same recipients are declared a royal priesthood (2:9). Given India’s caste/gender/age hierarchies, mandatory theologian review with translator note on every occurrence. |
| 69 | human institution (ἀνθρωπίνη κτίσις) | मानवीय संस्था | mānavīya sansthā | Medium | Submission to Authority | 2:13 | व्यवस्था (explicitly forbidden — reserved exclusively for Torah/Mosaic Law) | |
| 70 | shepherd and overseer [of souls] (ποιμήν καὶ ἐπίσκοπος) | चरवाहा और रखवाला | caravāhā aura rakhavālā | Medium | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering; Elders and Humility | 2:25; 5:2,4 | (none) | Ties Christ’s own pastoral role to the human-elder office of ch. 5. |
| 71 | example/pattern (ὑπογραμμός/τύπος) | आदर्श | ādarśa | Medium | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake; Elders and Humility | 2:21; 5:3 | (none) | |
| 72 | gentle and quiet spirit (πραέως καὶ ἡσυχίου πνεύματος) | नम्र और शान्त आत्मा | namra aura śānta ātmā | Medium | Holiness in Conduct | 3:4 | मौन रहना (rejected — implies enforced silence rather than inward disposition) | Must be read as inward character, not required public silencing. |
| 73 | weaker vessel (ἀσθενέστερον σκεῦος) | निर्बल पात्र | nirbala pātra | High | Holiness in Conduct | 3:7 | (none) | Must not imply diminished spiritual standing; same verse affirms co-heirship of grace. |
| 74 | humility / humble-minded (ταπεινοφροσύνη/ταπεινόφρων) | नम्रता / नम्र | namratā / namra | High | Elders and Humility | 3:8; 5:5,6 | दीनता (rejected — carries connotation of degraded/impoverished status rather than a positive chosen virtue) | Fixed term across the letter; central to the Elders and Humility doctrine. |
| 75 | sanctify [Christ] as Lord (ἁγιάσατε Κύριον) | प्रभु मानकर पवित्र समझो | Prabhu mānakara pavitra samajho | Critical | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering; Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 3:15 | (none) | Combines two Critical baseline terms (प्रभु + पवित्र); enthrones Christ’s Lordship inwardly as ground for courageous witness. |
| 76 | once [for all] (ἅπαξ) | एक बार | eka bāra | Medium | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | 3:18 | (none) | Must be reinforced as unrepeatable and complete, echoing the baseline’s crucified_with_christ “abiding result” caution. |
| 77 | put to death in flesh, made alive in spirit (θανατωθεὶς σαρκί, ζωοποιηθεὶς πνεύματι) | शरीर में मार डाला गया, आत्मा में जीवित किया गया | śarīra meṃ māra ḍālā gayā, ātmā meṃ jīvita kiyā gayā | Critical | Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering | 3:18 | (any resolved reading favoring one exegetical option over another — explicitly rejected) | Exegetically disputed (Holy Spirit’s agency vs. Christ’s own spiritual mode of existence); render literally, preserve ambiguity, record options as alternatives_considered. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 78 | spirits in prison…proclaimed (τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν…ἐκήρυξεν) | आत्माएँ…बन्दीगृह में…जाकर प्रचार किया | ātmāeṃ…bandīgṛha meṃ…jākara pracāra kiyā | Critical | Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits | 3:19 | दूसरा मौका देनेवाला प्रचार / अन्तराल-वास की अवस्था (both explicitly rejected — must not imply a post-mortem “second chance” resonant with bardo/reincarnation cosmologies) | The NT’s most contested single text; render literally without resolving referent (fallen angels vs. Noah’s human contemporaries) or timing in the Hindi text itself. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence. |
| 79 | corresponding pattern / antitype (ἀντίτυπον) | जिसका चित्र यह बपतिस्मा भी है | jisakā citra yaha bapatismā bhī hai | Medium | Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits | 3:21 | (none) | Typological, not causally identical; requires gloss for low-OT-literacy readers. |
| 80 | appeal of a good conscience (συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐπερώτημα) | अच्छे विवेक के लिये परमेश्वर से बिनती | acche viveka ke liye Parameśvara se binatī | High | Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits | 3:21 | शरीर की शुद्धि (explicitly rejected by the text itself — the verse defines baptism AGAINST ritual-cleansing) | The verse itself is doctrinally protective against a Hindu-style ritual-purification (shuddhi/snana) reading; the Hindi must preserve, not blunt, this self-correcting clause. |
| 81 | arm yourselves (ὁπλίσασθε) | हथियार बान्ध लो | hathiyāra bāndha lo | Medium | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 4:1 | (none) | Reuses established armor_of_light हथियार pattern. |
| 82 | gospel preached to the dead (νεκροῖς εὐηγγελίσθη) | मरे हुओं को सुसमाचार सुनाया गया | mare huoṃ ko susamācar sunāyā gayā | Critical | Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits | 4:6 | पुनर्जन्म का अवसर (explicitly and permanently rejected — reincarnation-adjacent “another chance” framing) | Second major contested verse; must not imply repeated post-mortem salvation opportunities across lifetimes. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 83 | self-controlled and sober-minded (σωφρονήσατε, νήψατε) | संयमी बनो और सचेत रहो | saṃyamī banō aura sacet raho | Low-Medium | Elders and Humility | 4:7; 5:8 | (none) | Consistent rendering across both occurrences. |
| 84 | love covers a multitude of sins (ἀγάπη καλύπτει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν) | प्रेम पापों के ढेर को ढांक देता है | prema pāpoṃ ke ḍhera ko ḍhāṃka detā hai | Medium | Holiness in Conduct | 4:8 | (none) | |
| 85 | fiery trial (πύρωσις) | आग की परीक्षा | āg kī parīkṣā | High | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 4:12 | (none) | Reuses परीक्षा-testing pattern established at 1:6-7. |
| 86 | reproached for the name of Christ (ὀνειδίζησθε ἐν ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ) | मसीह के नाम के कारण अपमानित होना | Masīha ke nāma ke kāraṇa apamānita honā | Medium | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 4:14 | निन्दित होना (avoided here to keep निंदा-family reserved for the condemnation contrast per #57’s reasoning) | |
| 87 | Christian (Χριστιανός) | मसीही | masīhī | Medium-High | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 4:16 | ईसाई (flagged as an acceptable general-society alternative but carrying “foreign religion” connotations in some Hindu-nationalist discourse; मसीही preferred as the established internal self-designation) | |
| 88 | elder (πρεσβύτερος) | प्राचीन | prācīna | High | Elders and Humility | 5:1,5 | गुरु (explicitly rejected — permanent-guru status never outgrown, echoing the Galatians paidagōgos caution) | Functional shepherding office qualified immediately by servant-leadership language (5:2-3), not a permanent honorific or caste-linked seniority status. |
| 89 | fellow elder (συμπρεσβύτερος) | साथी प्राचीन | sāthī prācīna | Medium | Elders and Humility | 5:1 | (none) | |
| 90 | exercising oversight (ἐπισκοποῦντες) | झुण्ड की रखवाली करते हुए | jhuṇḍa kī rakhavālī karate hue | Medium | Elders and Humility | 5:2 | (none) | |
| 91 | not domineering (κατακυριεύοντες) | अधिकार जताते हुए नहीं | adhikāra jatāte hue nahīṃ | Medium | Elders and Humility | 5:3 | प्रभुता जताना (rejected — risks confusing this forbidden human domineering with Christ’s positive, exclusive Lordship, प्रभु) | Greek wordplay linking domineering to κύριος is not safely reproducible in Hindi; doctrinal contrast preserved via context/gloss instead. |
| 92 | chief shepherd (ἀρχιποίμην) | मुख्य चरवाहा | mukhya caravāhā | Medium | Elders and Humility | 5:4 | (none) | |
| 93 | casting all anxiety on him (πᾶσαν τὴν μέριμναν ἐπιρίψαντες) | अपनी सारी चिन्ता उस पर डाल दो | apanī sārī cintā usa para ḍāla do | Low | Elders and Humility | 5:7 | (none) | |
| 94 | adversary / devil (ἀντίδικος/διάβολος) | विरोधी / शैतान | virodhī / śaitāna | Medium | Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake | 5:8 | असुर/राक्षस (rejected — distinct Hindu mythological categories, not equivalent to the biblical Satan) | Real, personal, hostile spiritual adversary, not an impersonal evil force or karmic obstacle. |
| 95 | restore, confirm, strengthen, establish (καταρτίσει, στηρίξει, σθενώσει, θεμελιώσει) | सिद्ध, स्थिर, बलवन्त करेगा और नींव पर स्थापित करेगा | siddha, sthira, balavanta karegā aura nīṃva para sthāpita karegā | Low | Elders and Humility | 5:10 | (none) | |
| 96 | co-elect (συνεκλεκτή) | चुनी हुई | cunī huī | Medium | Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood | 5:13 | (none) | Reuses चुनाव-family. |
| 97 | kiss of love (φίλημα ἀγάπης) | प्रेम का चुम्बन | prema kā cumbana | Low | (closing) | 5:14 | (none) | Requires brief cultural-context gloss on the first-century holy-kiss custom. |

The following terms/passages require human theologian review on every occurrence without exception, per the Phase 2 routing rules:
- नया जन्म (new birth, 1:3,23) — never पुनर्जन्म
- पुनरुत्थान (resurrection, 1:3,21; 3:21) — never पुनर्जन्म
- दुख / suffering-family (throughout) — mandatory translator note distinguishing from dukkha-escape and karma-consequence framings
- अधीन हो जाओ (submit, 2:13,18; 3:1,5; 5:5) — mandatory note distinguishing voluntary gospel-submission from caste/gender subjugation
- बहुमूल्य लहू / धर्मी…अधर्मियों के लिये (precious blood; righteous for unrighteous, 1:19; 3:18) — Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
- शरीर में मार डाला गया…आत्मा में जीवित किया गया (3:18) — exegetical ambiguity must be preserved, not resolved
- आत्माएँ…बन्दीगृह में…प्रचार किया (3:19) — exegetical ambiguity must be preserved, not resolved; guard against bardo/reincarnation-adjacent readings
- मरे हुओं को सुसमाचार सुनाया गया (4:6) — guard against reincarnation-adjacent “second chance” readings
- प्रभु मानकर पवित्र समझो (3:15) — compound Critical term (प्रभु + पवित्र)
This glossary must be merged into translation_memory.json (new entries, Section B) before any Phase 2 segment translation of 1 Peter begins, per the AI Translation Requirements’ term-registration procedure (§ “Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions”).
See 07_semantic_analysis.md for full verse-level and chapter-level argumentation supporting each entry.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameśvara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर, भगवान
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. परमेश्वर (Supreme Lord) is the BSI OV standard; भगवान has broad Hindu-deity usage and is avoided. 1 Peter occurrences throughout, esp. 1:2,3,5,21; 2:4,5,9,10,12,15-17,19,20; 3:4,5,17,18,20-22; 4:2,6,10,11,14,16,17,19; 5:2,5,6,10,12.
Father
Approved rendering: पिता
Transliteration: Pitā
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्मा, सृष्टिकर्ता
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. God as personal Father of Jesus Christ (1:3) and as impartial Judge-Father to be reverently feared (1:17), never a Hindu creator-deity name. 1 Peter 1:2,3,17.
Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: Prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: स्वामी, ईश्वर
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Reserved exclusively for Christ’s divine, exclusive Lordship. At 1 Peter 3:6 (Sarah calling Abraham ‘lord’), κύριος used of a human is rendered स्वामी, NEVER प्रभु — mandatory translator note distinguishing the human honorific from Christ’s exclusive title. 1 Peter 1:3,25; 2:3,13; 3:6,12,15.
Jesus
Approved rendering: यीशु
Transliteration: Yīśu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईसा, ईशू
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. BSI OV standard form; ईसा reserved for Muslim/Urdu usage, never used here. 1 Peter 1:1,2,3,7,13; 2:5,21; 3:21; 4:11.
Messiah
Approved rendering: मसीह
Transliteration: Masīha
Doctrine: Messianic Promise / Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Rejected alternatives: अभिषिक्त व्यक्ति, देव-दूत
Inherited from Romans package. The Anointed One; 1 Peter’s central theme is ‘the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow’ (1:11) — never one of several divine figures. Occurs throughout the letter.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा, देव-आत्मा
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Personal, third Person of the Trinity, active in election/sanctification (1:2), prophetic inspiration (1:12), and Christ’s resurrection witness (4:14). Special caution at 3:18 where πνεῦμα’s referent (Holy Spirit vs. Christ’s own spirit) is exegetically disputed — the Hindi must not resolve this ambiguity. Never ब्रह्म/परमात्मा.
Salvation
Approved rendering: उद्धार
Transliteration: uddhāra
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष, छुटकारा
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष. The full deliverance of the whole person, already secured yet awaiting eschatological unveiling. 1 Peter 1:5,9,10; 2:2.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: पुनरुत्थान
Transliteration: punaruttāna
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म, पुनर्जीवन
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation). This letter’s programmatic term, occurring at its structural hinge points (1:3, 1:21, 3:21) rather than once — treat each occurrence as independently load-bearing, requiring the baseline’s mandatory distinguishing translator note every time, not only at first occurrence.
New Birth
Approved rendering: नया जन्म
Transliteration: nayā janma
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म
Original: ἀναγεννάω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER पुनर्जन्म. 1 Peter’s opening keynote statement (1:3) and echoed at 1:23 (linked to the imperishable seed/living word) — full prohibition force applies at both occurrences.
Freedom
Approved rendering: स्वतंत्रता
Transliteration: svatantratā
Doctrine: Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष
Original: ἐλευθερία
Category: Freedom
Inherited from Galatians-extended baseline. NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष. 1 Peter 2:16 — freedom immediately qualified as not a covering for evil but for service as God’s slaves.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: धार्मिकता
Transliteration: dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, पुण्य, न्याय
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER धर्म. 1 Peter 2:24 (‘die to sin and live to righteousness’); 3:12 (Psalm 34, the Lord’s eyes on the righteous); 3:18 (the righteous [धर्मी] for the unrighteous — substitutionary logic depends entirely on this staying strictly forensic); 4:18. Any drift toward धर्म-rooted duty vocabulary collapses substitutionary atonement into a dutiful-vs-undutiful-persons statement.
Suffering
Approved rendering: दुख / दुख उठाना
Transliteration: dukha / dukha uṭhānā
Doctrine: Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake; Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Original: πάσχω / πάθημα
Category: Suffering
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian review on every occurrence. The letter’s single most frequent and doctrinally load-bearing term (1:11; 2:19-23; 3:14,17-18; 4:1,13,15,19; 5:1,9,10). Collides with (1) Buddhist duḥkha (First Noble Truth — suffering as inherent to existence, transcended through detachment/enlightenment) and (2) popular Hindu कर्म-फल (suffering as automatic karmic consequence). 1 Peter’s theology is neither: purposeful testing by a personal God (1:6-7), meaningful participation in Christ’s own pattern (2:21; 4:13), productive of tested faith and future glory (1:7; 4:13; 5:10), entrusted to a faithful personal Creator (4:19) — never a debt discharged nor a condition escaped via enlightenment. Mandatory translator note at every Critical/High occurrence with co-textual anchors (‘परमेश्वर की इच्छा से,’ ‘मसीह के साथ’).
Precious Blood
Approved rendering: बहुमूल्य लहू
Transliteration: bahumūlya lahū
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Rejected alternatives: बलि का लहू (explicitly rejected)
Original: τίμιον αἷμα
Category: Atonement
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian review. 1 Peter 1:19. Never assimilate to बलि/यज्ञ ritual-offering vocabulary — the gift moves from God to the sinner, not the reverse.
Holy Priesthood
Approved rendering: पवित्र याजकपद
Transliteration: pavitra yājakapada
Doctrine: The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: पुजारी-वर्ग (permanently and explicitly rejected)
Original: ἱεράτευμα ἅγιον
Category: Church
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian review on every occurrence. 1 Peter 2:5. याजक (established biblical/Levitical term) required; पुजारी denotes a Hindu ritual specialist mediating access others lack — exactly the hierarchy this verse abolishes by declaring ALL believers priests.
Royal Priesthood
Approved rendering: राजकीय याजकपद
Transliteration: rājakīya yājakapada
Doctrine: The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: पुजारी-वर्ग (permanently and explicitly rejected)
Original: βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα
Category: Church
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian review. 1 Peter 2:9. Same पुजारी prohibition as holy_priesthood.
Chosen Race
Approved rendering: चुना हुआ वंश
Transliteration: cunā huā vaṃśa
Doctrine: The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: जाति (permanently and explicitly forbidden)
Original: γένος ἐκλεκτόν
Category: Church
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review. 1 Peter 2:9. जाति is the standard Hindi word for Indian caste; using it would make believers sound installed into a new spiritually superior caste rather than having caste-based ranking abolished. वंश (already load-bearing for ‘seed’/lineage in the Galatians TM) avoids this collision.
Sanctify Christ As Lord
Approved rendering: अपने हृदयों में मसीह को प्रभु मानकर पवित्र समझो
Transliteration: apane hṛdayoṃ meṃ Masīha ko Prabhu mānakara pavitra samajho
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering; Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Original: ἁγιάσατε Κύριον τὸν Χριστὸν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις
Category: Christology
NEW compound term combining two Critical baseline terms (प्रभु + पवित्र), mandatory theologian review. 1 Peter 3:15 — inward enthronement of Christ’s Lordship grounding courageous, gentle testimony under pressure.
Put To Death In Flesh Made Alive In Spirit
Approved rendering: शरीर में मार डाला गया, आत्मा में जीवित किया गया
Transliteration: śarīra meṃ māra ḍālā gayā, ātmā meṃ jīvita kiyā gayā
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Rejected alternatives: any resolved reading favoring one exegetical option over another (explicitly rejected)
Original: θανατωθεὶς σαρκί, ζωοποιηθεὶς πνεύματι
Category: Christology
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian review, every occurrence. 1 Peter 3:18. Exegetically disputed (Holy Spirit’s agency vs. Christ’s own spiritual mode of existence) — render literally, preserve the same grammatical ambiguity the Greek carries; do NOT add a clarifying subject/agent the source text does not supply. Record interpretive options only as alternatives_considered in the segment cache, never resolved in the rendered text.
Spirits In Prison Proclaimed
Approved rendering: आत्माएँ…बन्दीगृह में…जाकर प्रचार किया
Transliteration: ātmāeṃ…bandīgṛha meṃ…jākara pracāra kiyā
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits
Rejected alternatives: दूसरा मौका देनेवाला प्रचार (explicitly and permanently rejected), अन्तराल-वास की अवस्था (explicitly and permanently rejected)
Original: τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν…ἐκήρυξεν
Category: Christology
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian review on every occurrence. 1 Peter 3:19. The NT’s most contested single text; render literally without resolving the disputed referent (fallen angels vs. Noah’s human contemporaries) or timing. Guard absolutely against any post-mortem ‘second chance’ reading resonant with bardo/reincarnation cosmologies.
Gospel Preached To The Dead
Approved rendering: मरे हुओं को सुसमाचार सुनाया गया
Transliteration: mare huoṃ ko susamācar sunāyā gayā
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म का अवसर (explicitly and permanently rejected)
Original: νεκροῖς εὐηγγελίσθη
Category: Gospel
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian review, every occurrence. 1 Peter 4:6. Second major contested verse; must not imply repeatable post-mortem salvation opportunities across lifetimes. Render literally without resolving the exegetical dispute.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: अनुग्रह
Transliteration: anugraha
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: कृपा, दया, वरदान, भाग्य, कर्म-फल, पुण्य
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. At 1 Peter 2:19-20 (χάρις as ‘a gracious/credit-worthy thing’) the commendation flows from trust in God amid unjust suffering, NOT from suffering’s inherent merit-earning value — must not be misread as merit accumulation. 1 Peter 1:2,10,13; 2:19,20; 3:7; 4:10; 5:5,10,12.
Faith
Approved rendering: विश्वास
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: श्रद्धा, आस्था, भरोसा

Sanctification
Approved rendering: पवित्रीकरण
Transliteration: pavitrikaraṇa

Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection / Elders and Humility
Rejected alternatives: देव-ज्योति, प्रकाश

Power Of God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य

Transliteration: pahale se jānanā
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection

Category: Salvation

Redemption
Approved rendering: छुटकारा
Transliteration: chuṭakārā
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष
Original: λυτρόω

Flesh
Approved rendering: शरीर
Transliteration: śarīra
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering / Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Rejected alternatives: देह (in sarx contexts)
Original: σάρξ
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans/Galatians package. At 1 Peter 4:1-2,6 σάρξ denotes mortal life generally rather than the technical Pauline sarx-nature sense used at 3:18,21 — context must disambiguate for the reader in each case.
Conscience
Approved rendering: विवेक
Transliteration: viveka
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits / Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Rejected alternatives: अंतरात्मा
Original: συνείδησις
Category: Conscience
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER अंतरात्मा. Moral awareness before a personal God, not Vedantic self-discrimination. 1 Peter 2:19; 3:16,21.
Idolatry
Approved rendering: मूर्तिपूजा
Transliteration: mūrtipūjā
Doctrine: Holiness in Conduct
Original: εἰδωλολατρία

Doctrine: The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: पूजा
Original: (implied in πνευματικαὶ θυσίαι, 2:5)

Living Sacrifice
Approved rendering: आत्मिक बलिदान
Transliteration: ātmika balidāna
Doctrine: The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: बलि, यज्ञ
Original: πνευματικαὶ θυσίαι
Category: Worship

Sin
Approved rendering: पाप
Transliteration: pāpa
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering / Holiness in Conduct
Rejected alternatives: अधर्म, अशुद्धता
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Peter 2:24 (Christ himself bore our sins in his body on the tree); 4:1 (cease from sin); 4:8 (love covers a multitude of sins). Moral transgression before a personal God, not ritual impurity or karma.
Law
Approved rendering: व्यवस्था
Transliteration: vyavasthā
Doctrine: Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, शरीयत, नियम
Inherited from Romans package. Not used as a positive term in 1 Peter’s own text, but retained in translation memory to enforce the guardrail that मानवीय संस्था (human institution, 2:13) must NEVER be substituted with व्यवस्था, which remains reserved exclusively for Torah/Mosaic Law.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: विश्वास की आज्ञाकारिता
Transliteration: viśvāsa kī ājñākāritā
Doctrine: Holiness in Conduct

Inherited pattern from Romans package. 1 Peter 1:2 (‘chosen…for obedience to Jesus Christ’); 1:14 (‘as obedient children,’ τέκνα ὑπακοῆς — आज्ञाकारिता root applied); 1:22 (‘obedience to the truth’). Obedience flows from new birth and faith, never works-based duty.
Living Hope
Approved rendering: जीवित आशा
Transliteration: jīvita āśā
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: आशा (bare, unqualified)
Original: ἐλπὶς ζῶσα
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. 1 Peter 1:3. आशा alone registers as an uncertain wish adjacent to भाग्य/किस्मत fatalism; जीवित is the load-bearing, non-optional qualifier signaling an objectively resurrection-grounded hope. Never drop जीवित even in later stylistic variation.
Inheritance
Approved rendering: मीरास
Transliteration: mīrāsa
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: विरासत (acceptable secondary), कमाई हुई सम्पत्ति (merit-implying, rejected)
Original: κληρονομία
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. 1 Peter 1:4. Consistent with the baseline वारिस (heir) family. Must read as an unconditional gift secured by God’s own custody (‘kept in heaven’), never merit-earned family inheritance under Indian succession custom.

Doctrine: Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Rejected alternatives: कर्म-फल के दुख (explicitly and permanently rejected)

Tested Genuineness Of Faith
Approved rendering: परखा हुआ विश्वास
Transliteration: parakhā huā viśvāsa
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection; Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Rejected alternatives: तपस्या से सिद्ध विश्वास (rejected — tapasya/ascetic-merit framing)
Original: δοκίμιον
Category: Faith
NEW TERM. 1 Peter 1:7. Suffering proves, does not produce, genuine faith. Never allow a verb implying suffering ‘manufactures’ faith — prefer प्रमाणित करता है (proves/demonstrates).
Sojourners
Approved rendering: परदेशी
Transliteration: paradeśī
Doctrine: Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance; The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: विदेशी (rejected — too narrow, loses theological identity force)
Original: παρεπίδημοι / πάροικοι
Category: Church
NEW TERM. The letter’s governing self-identity metaphor (1:1,17; 2:11; 5:13). NOT a call to social withdrawal — 2:12-17 immediately qualifies it with active, engaged civic conduct.
Reverent Fear
Approved rendering: भय
Transliteration: bhaya
Doctrine: Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance
Rejected alternatives: डर (rejected — servile terror connotation)
Original: φόβος
Category: God
NEW TERM. 1 Peter 1:17; 2:17-18; 3:2,15. Reverential awe before the just Father-Judge; lexically distinguished from आदर given to the emperor (2:17) to preserve God’s unique claim.
Without Blemish Or Spot
Approved rendering: निर्दोष और निष्कलंक
Transliteration: nirdoṣa aura niṣkalaṅka
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering

Transliteration: jīvita aura sadā ṭaharanevālā vacana
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: ॐ-शैली अनन्त शब्द (explicitly rejected)
Original: λόγος ζῶν καὶ μένων
Category: Scripture
NEW TERM. 1 Peter 1:23. God’s own enduring self-disclosure, not an impersonal eternal syllable/mantra. Must be immediately connected to ‘imperishable seed’ so the seed is anchored to Scripture/proclamation, not a mystical bīja.
Living Stone
Approved rendering: जीवित पत्थर
Transliteration: jīvita patthara
Doctrine: The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Original: λίθος ζῶν
Category: Church
NEW TERM. 1 Peter 2:4,5. Without ‘living,’ the metaphor collapses into ordinary masonry imagery with no christological force.
Submit
Approved rendering: अधीन हो जाओ
Transliteration: adhīna ho jāo
Doctrine: Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance
Rejected alternatives: दासता स्वीकार करना (rejected — collapses voluntary submission into forced slave-status)
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Civil Authority
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian review with translator note on every occurrence. 1 Peter 2:13,18; 3:1,5; 5:5. Given India’s caste/gender/age hierarchies, must be taught as voluntary, gospel-motivated, Christ-modeled submission ‘for the Lord’s sake,’ never inherent inferiority — the same recipients are elsewhere called a royal priesthood (2:9).
Weaker Vessel
Approved rendering: निर्बल पात्र
Transliteration: nirbala pātra
Doctrine: Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance
Original: ἀσθενέστερον σκεῦος
Category: Sanctification

Humility
Approved rendering: नम्रता / नम्र
Transliteration: namratā / namra
Doctrine: Elders and Humility
Rejected alternatives: दीनता (rejected — connotes degraded/impoverished status, not chosen virtue)

Category: Church
NEW TERM. Fixed across the letter (3:8; 5:5,6); central to the Elders and Humility doctrine.
Appeal Of Good Conscience
Approved rendering: अच्छे विवेक के लिये परमेश्वर से बिनती
Transliteration: acche viveka ke liye Parameśvara se binatī
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits
Rejected alternatives: शरीर की शुद्धि (explicitly rejected by the text itself)
Original: συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐπερώτημα
Category: Church
NEW TERM. 1 Peter 3:21. The verse is itself doctrinally protective against a shuddhi/ritual-bathing reading of baptism; the negative clause (‘not a removal of dirt from the body but…’) must be preserved with full force, never compressed away.
Fiery Trial
Approved rendering: आग की परीक्षा
Transliteration: āg kī parīkṣā
Doctrine: Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Original: πύρωσις
Category: Suffering
NEW TERM. 1 Peter 4:12. Reuses the परीक्षा-testing pattern established at 1:6-7; keep the passive construction (testing that comes upon the believer) rather than an active, self-chosen ascetic framing.
Elder
Approved rendering: प्राचीन
Transliteration: prācīna
Doctrine: Elders and Humility
Rejected alternatives: गुरु (explicitly rejected — permanent guru-status never outgrown, echoing the Galatians paidagōgos caution)
Original: πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church
NEW TERM, mandatory theologian review. 1 Peter 5:1,5. Functional shepherding office, immediately qualified by servant-leadership language (5:2-3), not a permanent honorific or caste-linked seniority status.
Medium Risk Terms
Mercy
Approved rendering: दया
Transliteration: dayā
Doctrine: Mercy of God
Original: ἔλεος
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Kept distinct from अनुग्रह (grace, unmerited favor to the guilty) — दया addresses wretchedness/compassion. 1 Peter 1:3 (caused the new birth); 2:10 (a former non-people made recipients of mercy).
Baptism
Approved rendering: बपतिस्मा
Transliteration: bapatismā
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits
Rejected alternatives: स्नान, दीक्षा
Original: βάπτισμα
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER स्नान/दीक्षा. 1 Peter 3:21 defines baptism explicitly AGAINST ritual cleansing (‘not a removal of dirt from the body’) — this self-correcting clause must be preserved intact, not blunted.
Cross
Approved rendering: क्रूस
Transliteration: krūsa
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Rejected alternatives: सूली
Original: ξύλον
Category: Atonement
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Peter 2:24 renders ξύλον (‘tree’) with this established cross-vocabulary since it unambiguously denotes the crucifixion instrument there.
Stumbling Stone
Approved rendering: ठोकर का पत्थर
Transliteration: ṭhokara kā patthara
Doctrine: The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Original: λίθος προσκόμματος
Category: Christology

Transliteration: ātmika varadāna
Doctrine: Elders and Humility
Rejected alternatives: वरदान, देवीय शक्तियां

Doctrine: Holiness in Conduct
Original: φιλαδελφία

Hypocrisy
Approved rendering: कपट
Transliteration: kapaṭa
Doctrine: Holiness in Conduct
Original: ὑπόκρισις
Category: Church
Inherited from Galatians-extended baseline. 1 Peter 2:1 — to be put away among believers.
