Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Haggai (English → Hindi)

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering the entire book of Haggai (chapters 1–2, all four oracles). Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans/Galatians translation_memory.json are marked [Baseline — reused exactly]; all others are [New — Haggai extension] and require formal addition to translation memory before Phase 2 processing, per the baseline’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.

Risk tiers follow the baseline framework exactly:

  • Critical — mistranslation destroys/alters essential doctrine; mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
  • High — significant theological confusion/syncretism risk; theologian review required.
  • Medium — reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
  • Low — minor imprecision risk; automated review sufficient.

Note on count: Critical count in the table (9 distinct entries across §A–G) reflects the true tally; the row above lists 8 explicitly plus यहोशू, totaling 9 Critical terms requiring mandatory theologian review before Phase 2 translation of Haggai begins.

This glossary must be merged into an updated translation_memory.json (incrementing the version number per the baseline’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions) before any Phase 2 segment translation of Haggai proceeds. All Critical and High risk terms above must also be added to an updated bible_term_registry.json and doctrine_risk_registry.json extension for Haggai, consistent with the baseline’s review-routing framework.

Critical Risk Terms

God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameśvara
Doctrine: Sovereignty of the Covenant God
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर, भगवान

Baseline generic term for God (Elohim/theos). In Haggai must remain clearly distinct from यहोवा (the covenant name); use परमेश्वर only for generic references to God, never as a substitute for the tetragrammaton. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: The Presence and Spirit of God with His People
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा, देव-आत्मा

Reserved for the personal, divine third Person. Underlies (but is not the literal Hebrew wording of) Haggai 2:5’s ‘my Spirit remains among you’ — see my_spirit_remains_among_you for the OT-specific occurrence entry. Never ब्रह्म/परमात्मा. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Messiah

Approved rendering: मसीह
Transliteration: Masīha
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope
Rejected alternatives: अभिषिक्त व्यक्ति, देव-दूत

Not a direct lexical occurrence in Haggai, but essential background for teaching notes connecting the signet-ring reversal (2:23) and the ‘latter glory’ oracle (2:9) to the Critical Messianic Promise doctrine. Never present Zerubbabel himself as ‘the Messiah.’ Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Son Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का पुत्र
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā putra
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर का अंश, देव-पुरुष

Not a direct lexical occurrence in Haggai; retained so teaching notes on the signet-ring oracle’s (2:23) messianic trajectory remain consistent with the baseline’s Critical Sonship-of-Christ doctrine and never conflate Zerubbabel’s typological role with Christ’s unique Sonship. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Joshua High Priest

Approved rendering: यहोशू
Transliteration: Yahośū
Doctrine: Priesthood and the Nature of Holiness
Rejected alternatives: यीशु
Original: יְהוֹשֻׁעַ
Category: Priesthood

CRITICAL: Never render यीशु. Despite sharing a Hebrew root with ‘Jesus’ (both mean ‘YHWH is salvation’), this post-exilic high priest must remain visually and phonetically distinct from यीशु मसीह at every occurrence (1:1,12,14; 2:2,4). A disambiguating translator note is mandatory on every occurrence, especially for learners moving between this curriculum and Gospel curricula.

Yhwh

Approved rendering: यहोवा
Transliteration: Yahovā
Doctrine: The Sovereignty of the Covenant God
Rejected alternatives: परमेश्वर (as a substitute for the divine name), यहवे
Original: יְהוָה
Category: God

CRITICAL — NEW BASELINE EXTENSION: यहोवा renders the tetragrammaton consistently at every occurrence throughout Haggai (directly, or as part of सेनाओं का यहोवा). Distinct from the baseline’s परमेश्वर (NT theos/Elohim) and प्रभु (NT kyrios). Collapsing यहोवा into परमेश्वर erases the covenant-name specificity on which Haggai’s urgency depends. Never gloss or footnote as equivalent to any Hindu deity name.

Lord Of Hosts

Approved rendering: सेनाओं का यहोवा
Transliteration: Senāoṃ kā Yahovā
Doctrine: The Sovereignty of the Covenant God
Rejected alternatives: सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वर, शक्तियों का प्रभु
Original: יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת
Category: God

CRITICAL: Recurs approximately 14 times across the book; must render identically at every occurrence. Never शक्ति-based vocabulary (goddess/impersonal-force risk, per the baseline power_of_god prohibition). Inconsistent rendering would blur the title’s cumulative rhetorical weight underlying every economic and social claim in the book.

I Am With You

Approved rendering: मैं तुम्हारे साथ हूँ
Transliteration: maiṃ tumhāre sātha hūṃ
Doctrine: The Presence and Spirit of God with His People
Original: אֲנִי אִתְּכֶם
Category: God

CRITICAL: Render identically at both occurrences (1:13; 2:4), per the baseline’s Theological Consistency Rules extended to Haggai’s central presence-promise formula. Any variation would suggest two separate assurances rather than one repeated covenant promise.

My Spirit Remains Among You

Approved rendering: मेरी आत्मा तुम्हारे बीच बनी रहेगी
Transliteration: merī ātmā tumhāre bīca banī rahegī
Doctrine: The Presence and Spirit of God with His People
Rejected alternatives: परमात्मा-style phrasing
Original: רוּחִי עֹמֶדֶת בְּתוֹכְכֶם
Category: Holy Spirit

CRITICAL (2:5): YHWH’s own abiding, personal, divine Spirit — distinct from 1:14’s human-spirit usage (stirred_up_the_spirit) and from any impersonal-universal-Self (आत्मा=परमात्मा) Advaitic reading. A mandatory disambiguating translator note is required on this occurrence.

House Of The Lord

Approved rendering: यहोवा का भवन
Transliteration: Yahovā kā bhavana
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Rejected alternatives: मन्दिर (flagged alternative — requires mandatory disambiguating note on every occurrence if retained for OT-curriculum continuity; not the recommended default)
Original: בֵּית־יְהוָה
Category: Temple/Worship

CRITICAL — recurs roughly 20 times, anchoring both the Priorities and Coming-Glory-of-the-Temple doctrines. यहोवा का भवन is the recommended primary rendering because मन्दिर’s dominant Hindi association (an image-housing Hindu shrine for darshan/puja) is close to a doctrinal inversion of YHWH’s aniconic presence-house. Formal theologian ruling required before Phase 2 begins; this is the single highest-leverage lexical decision in the book.

My House His Own House

Approved rendering: मेरा भवन / अपना घर
Transliteration: merā bhavana / apanā ghara
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Rejected alternatives: identical vocabulary for both houses (would erase the possessive contrast)
Original: בֵּיתִי / בֵּיתוֹ
Category: Priorities

CRITICAL — the book’s doctrinal center (1:9). Hebrew carries the beiti/beito contrast through possessive suffixes alone; Hindi has no equivalent, so two distinct nouns (भवन for YHWH’s house, घर for private dwellings) are mandatory to preserve the argument. Translator note required flagging this deliberate device.

Desire Of All Nations

Approved rendering: सब जातियों की मनोहर वस्तुएं
Transliteration: saba jātiyoṃ kī manohara vastueṃ
Doctrine: The Coming Glory of the Temple
Rejected alternatives: a direct personal-messianic phrasing (risks over-resolving a contested referent in the base text)
Original: חֶמְדַּת כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם
Category: Eschatology

CRITICAL (2:7). Contested phrase: material-treasure reading (adopted here as primary, matching the following silver/gold clause and most modern scholarship) versus a minority historic messianic-personal reading (echoed in Christian hymnody). The Hindi base translation must not silently resolve this ambiguity; the messianic reading may appear only as a secondary devotional note in teaching material.

Latter Glory Greater Than Former

Approved rendering: इस भवन की अन्तिम महिमा पहिली महिमा से बढ़कर होगी
Transliteration: isa bhavana kī antima mahimā pahilī mahimā se baṛhakara hogī
Doctrine: The Coming Glory of the Temple
Original: גָּדוֹל יִהְיֶה כְּבוֹד הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה הָאַחֲרוֹן מִן־הָרִאשׁוֹן
Category: Temple/Worship

CRITICAL (2:9). Climactic promise, title-verse of the Coming-Glory-of-the-Temple doctrine; reuses baseline महिमा exactly, tying to 1:8. Theologian review must ensure teaching material handles any Christological trajectory as typological anticipation, never overstating what the Hebrew text itself asserts.

Signet Ring

Approved rendering: मुहर की अंगूठी
Transliteration: muhara kī aṃgūṭhī
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope
Original: חוֹתָם
Category: Covenant

CRITICAL (2:23). Deliberate intertextual reversal of Jeremiah 22:24 (YHWH tearing the signet ring from Jehoiachin, Zerubbabel’s grandfather, in judgment). A mandatory theologian’s translator note citing Jeremiah 22:24 is required on every occurrence, or the exalted image reads as an isolated compliment rather than covenant-historical restoration.

High Risk Terms

Glory

Approved rendering: महिमा
Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: The Coming Glory of the Temple
Rejected alternatives: देव-ज्योति, प्रकाश
Original: כָּבוֹד
Category: God

Reused exactly for Haggai 1:8 (‘I will be glorified’) and 2:7,9 (‘latter glory greater than the former’), tying the temple’s coming glory to the baseline Deity-of-Christ-family glory vocabulary. Avoid light-metaphor drift toward Hindu divine-radiance concepts. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Holy

Approved rendering: पवित्र
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Priesthood and the Nature of Holiness
Rejected alternatives: शुद्ध, निर्मल
Original: קֹדֶשׁ
Category: Sanctification

Reused in both its moral-relational sense (general) and its technical ritual-holiness sense in Haggai’s priestly object lesson (2:12, पवित्र मांस — see holy_flesh). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Remnant

Approved rendering: बचे हुए लोग
Transliteration: bace hue loga
Doctrine: The Remnant and the People of God

Direct terminological continuity with Romans 9:27/11:5. In Haggai renders שְׁאָר הָעָם (she’ar ha’am, 1:12,14; 2:2) — see remnant_of_the_people for the Haggai-specific occurrence entry. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Election

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का चुनाव
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā cunāva
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, नियति, किस्मत

Vocabulary family drawn on (not identically rendered) for 2:23’s ‘I have chosen you’ (Zerubbabel) — see i_have_chosen_you. Every Haggai occurrence must carry a note distinguishing Zerubbabel’s covenant-historical vocation from Romans 9-11’s soteriological election; never silently conflate. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Providence

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का विधान
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā vidhāna
Doctrine: Providence and the Covenant Curses
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, कर्म का नियम

Governs the theological framing of Haggai’s drought/blessing sequence (1:6-11; 2:15-19): YHWH’s personal, purposive governance, never भाग्य or karma-style impersonal cause-effect. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Sovereignty

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की संप्रभुता
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī samprabhutā
Doctrine: The Sovereignty of the Covenant God
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, नियति

Underlies the doctrine title governing यहोवा/सेनाओं का यहोवा throughout Haggai; God’s personal rule, never impersonal fate/karma. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Power Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī sāmarthya
Doctrine: The Sovereignty of the Covenant God
Rejected alternatives: शक्ति, ताकत

Cited as the guardrail behind सेनाओं का यहोवा (LORD of Hosts): never शक्ति, which risks a goddess-figure/Shakti association. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Covenant

Approved rendering: वाचा
Transliteration: vācā
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope
Rejected alternatives: अनुबंध, समझौता

Underlies दाऊदी वाचा (Davidic Covenant) doctrine framing for the Zerubbabel/signet-ring oracle (2:23). Relational covenant bond, not mere legal contract. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Seed Of David

Approved rendering: दाऊद के वंश से
Transliteration: Dāūda ke vaṃśa se
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope

Cited in cross-curriculum continuity notes for Zerubbabel’s Davidic lineage; essential teaching-note background for 2:21-23, not a direct lexical occurrence in Haggai. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Sin

Approved rendering: पाप
Transliteration: pāpa
Doctrine: Priesthood and the Nature of Holiness
Rejected alternatives: अधर्म, अशुद्धता

Baseline moral-transgression term. Haggai 2:13-14’s use of अशुद्ध (‘unclean/defiled’) is a distinct, legitimate technical ceremonial-impurity usage and must NOT be confused with, or substituted by, पाप vocabulary — see unclean_defiled. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Grace

Approved rendering: अनुग्रह
Transliteration: anugraha
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Rejected alternatives: कृपा, दया, वरदान, भाग्य, कर्म-फल, पुण्य

Not a direct lexical occurrence in Haggai, but the essential guardrail behind from_this_day_i_will_bless_you (2:19): covenant blessing flows from restored relationship and obedient response, not from labor’s intrinsic merit — the grace-versus-works framework guards against a karma-adjacent misreading. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Word Of The Lord

Approved rendering: यहोवा का वचन
Transliteration: Yahovā kā vacana
Doctrine: Inspiration and Authority of the Prophetic Word
Rejected alternatives: हाग्गै का सन्देश, गुरु वचन
Original: דְּבַר־יְהוָה
Category: Prophecy

Fixed prophetic-reception formula opening all four oracles (1:1,3; 2:1,10,20). Must not be softened toward गुरु वचन/संत वाणी categories that locate authority in a revered teacher’s own wisdom rather than words originating from God himself, merely transmitted through the prophet.

House Lies Waste

Approved rendering: उजाड़
Transliteration: ujāṛa
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Rejected alternatives: खण्डहर (acceptable synonym)
Original: חָרֵב
Category: Temple/Worship

1:4’s charev (ruin). Forms an untranslatable Hebrew wordplay with 1:11’s choreb (drought) — a mandatory cross-reference translator note is required linking this entry to i_called_for_a_drought so the causal theological logic survives despite the lost pun.

I Will Take Pleasure In It

Approved rendering: मैं उससे प्रसन्न होऊँगा
Transliteration: maiṃ usase prasanna hoūṃgā
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Original: וְאֵרָצֶה־בּוֹ
Category: Worship

1:8. Guard against a merit-transaction reading in which the building purchases divine pleasure (a karma-adjacent risk given India’s पुण्य-generating ritual-effort assumption); pleasure flows from restored covenant relationship, not payment for a favor.

I Will Be Glorified

Approved rendering: मेरी महिमा होगी
Transliteration: merī mahimā hogī
Doctrine: The Coming Glory of the Temple
Original: וְאֶכָּבֵד
Category: Temple/Worship

1:8, reusing the baseline महिमा term exactly to tie forward to the 2:1-9 glory oracle.

I Called For A Drought

Approved rendering: मैंने सूखा बुलाया
Transliteration: maiṃne sūkhā bulāyā
Doctrine: Providence and the Covenant Curses
Original: וָאֶקְרָא חֹרֶב
Category: Providence

1:11. Forms the untranslatable Hebrew wordplay with house_lies_waste (1:4); a mandatory cross-reference translator note is required so the causal link — ‘because my house is a ruin, I called a drought’ — survives despite the lost pun.

Remnant Of The People

Approved rendering: बचे हुए लोग
Transliteration: bace hue loga
Doctrine: The Remnant and the People of God
Original: שְׁאָר הָעָם
Category: Election

1:12,14; 2:2. Haggai-specific occurrence of the baseline remnant term (she’ar ha’am), directly continuous with Romans 9:27/11:5. Theologian review must confirm teaching notes distinguish Haggai’s historical post-exilic remnant from Romans’ soteriological remnant argument.

Stirred Up The Spirit

Approved rendering: आत्मा को उभाड़ा
Transliteration: ātmā ko ubhāṛā
Doctrine: The Presence and Spirit of God with His People
Original: וַיָּעַר יְהוָה אֶת־רוּחַ
Category: Holy Spirit

1:14. The HUMAN spirit/will of Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the remnant, sovereignly stirred by YHWH — must be clearly distinguished from पवित्र आत्मा and from 2:5’s my_spirit_remains_among_you (YHWH’s own Spirit). Mandatory disambiguating translator note required given both usages occur within the same short book.

Shake Heavens And Earth

Approved rendering: आकाश और पृथ्वी, समुद्र और स्थल को हिला दूँगा
Transliteration: ākāśa aura pṛthvī, samudra aura sthala ko hilā dūṃgā
Doctrine: The Eschatological Shaking of the Nations
Original: מַרְעִישׁ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת־הָאָרֶץ וְאֶת־הַיָּם וְאֶת־הֶחָרָבָה
Category: Eschatology

2:6-7, repeated/intensified at 2:21. Render identically at both occurrences. Quoted in Hebrews 12:26 (NT); flagged for future cross-curriculum harmonization once a Hebrews language package exists.

Holy Flesh

Approved rendering: पवित्र मांस
Transliteration: pavitra māṃsa
Doctrine: Priesthood and the Nature of Holiness
Original: בְּשַׂר־קֹדֶשׁ / קֹדֶשׁ
Category: Priesthood

2:12. Consecrated sacrificial meat in the priestly torah-ruling establishing that holiness (unlike uncleanness) does not transmit by casual contact. Both native speaker and theologian review recommended to ensure the object lesson’s didactic logic, not merely its vocabulary, survives translation.

From This Day I Will Bless You

Approved rendering: आज के दिन से मैं तुम्हें आशीष दूँगा
Transliteration: āja ke dina se maiṃ tumheṃ āśīṣa dūṃgā
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Original: מִן־הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה אֲבָרֵךְ
Category: Obedience

2:19. The clearest single statement of the Obedience-and-Blessing doctrine, dated precisely to the day rebuilding resumed. Reuses आशीष (Galatians blessing_of_abraham family); guard against a merit-transaction/karma-adjacent reading — blessing flows from restored covenant relationship, not from the intrinsic value of the labor performed.

I Have Chosen You

Approved rendering: मैंने तुझे चुन लिया है
Transliteration: maiṃne tujhe cuna liyā hai
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope
Original: בְּחַרְתִּיךָ
Category: Election

2:23. May draw on the baseline’s परमेश्वर का चुनाव vocabulary family for cross-curriculum consistency, but every occurrence requires a note clarifying the referent is Zerubbabel’s specific covenant-historical vocation, not a restatement of Romans 9-11’s soteriological election doctrine.

Medium Risk Terms

Peace

Approved rendering: शांति
Transliteration: śānti
Doctrine: The Coming Glory of the Temple
Rejected alternatives: चैन, सुकून
Original: שָׁלוֹם
Category: Temple/Worship

Reused exactly for Haggai 2:9’s promise of shalom ‘in this place,’ consistent with the baseline’s relational/covenantal peace (not psychological calm or meditation-peace). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

David

Approved rendering: दाऊद
Transliteration: Dāūda
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope

Proper name; BSI OV form. Relevant background for Zerubbabel’s Davidic lineage (2:23), though David is not named directly within Haggai’s own text. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Blessing Of Abraham

Approved rendering: आशीष
Transliteration: āśīṣa
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Rejected alternatives: आशीर्वाद

Sourced from the Galatians-additions family (recorded in bible_term_registry.json, not the core Romans translation_memory.json). आशीष conveys God’s own gracious initiative, never a reciprocal guru/elder-favor exchange (आशीर्वाद, forbidden). Directly reused for Haggai 2:19 — see from_this_day_i_will_bless_you. Inherited from Galatians package (registry-sourced); reused exactly for Haggai.

Governor

Approved rendering: हाकिम
Transliteration: hākima
Doctrine: Civil and Religious Leadership in Partnership
Rejected alternatives: राज्यपाल
Original: פֶּחָה
Category: Civil Authority

Persian-period provincial civil office (pechah), never a king. Avoid राज्यपाल (modern political governor); correct reading of Zerubbabel’s limited civil status is necessary background for the future-oriented hope of the 2:23 signet-ring oracle.

High Priest

Approved rendering: महायाजक
Transliteration: mahāyājaka
Doctrine: Priesthood and the Nature of Holiness
Rejected alternatives: पुरोहित, पंडित
Original: הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל
Category: Priesthood

Head of the Aaronic priesthood, joint addressee with the governor of every oracle. Must be distinguished from Hindu पुरोहित/पंडित, whose ritual mediatory function and cosmology differ fundamentally.

This People

Approved rendering: यह प्रजा
Transliteration: yaha prajā
Doctrine: The Remnant and the People of God
Rejected alternatives: ये लोग (acceptable secondary alternate)
Original: הָעָם הַזֶּה
Category: Church

1:2’s distancing designation (ha’am hazzeh), contrasted with covenantal ‘मेरी प्रजा.’ Preserve the distancing, mildly displeased tone with a translator note rather than a flatly neutral rendering.

The Time Is Not Come

Approved rendering: समय
Transliteration: samaya
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Original: הָעֵת
Category: Priorities

1:2’s people’s excuse (‘the time is not come’). Must render so it reads as the people’s self-justifying claim being quoted (and then refuted), never as an objective statement legitimizing delay.

Paneled Houses

Approved rendering: सजे-सजाये घर
Transliteration: saje-sajāye ghara
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Original: בָּתִים סְפוּנִים
Category: Priorities

1:4’s batim sefunim (finished/paneled dwellings). Paraphrase conveying comfortable, costly private investment — no single Hindi word for ‘paneled’ exists — sharpening the contrast with the ruined temple in the same verse.

Consider Your Ways

Approved rendering: अपने चालचलन पर ध्यान दो
Transliteration: apane cālacalana para dhyāna do
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Original: שִׂימוּ לְבַבְכֶם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכֶם
Category: Obedience

Refrain opening both halves of oracle 1 (1:5,7). Preserve the plural-imperative force as an active summons to repentance-oriented self-examination, not a passive invitation merely to ‘notice.‘

Sown Much Harvested Little

Approved rendering: बहुत बोया, थोड़ा काटा
Transliteration: bahuta boyā, thoṛā kāṭā
Doctrine: Providence and the Covenant Curses
Original: זְרַעְתֶּם הַרְבֵּה וְהָבֵא מְעָט
Category: Providence

1:6, first in the Deuteronomy-28-echoing futility-curse chain. Native speaker review recommended to confirm it reads as purposive judgment, not mere bad-harvest description.

Build The House

Approved rendering: भवन बनाओ
Transliteration: bhavana banāo
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Original: וּבְנוּ הַבָּיִת
Category: Obedience

1:8’s positive imperative counterpart to ‘consider your ways’; consistent with the house_of_the_lord rendering. First explicit statement of the Obedience-and-Blessing doctrine.

I Blew Upon It

Approved rendering: मैं उस पर फूँक मार दी
Transliteration: maiṃ usa para phūṃka māra dī
Doctrine: Providence and the Covenant Curses
Original: וְנָפַחְתִּי בוֹ
Category: Providence

1:9. YHWH’s own active breath nullifying the fruit of self-interested labor; must not be flattened into a passive ‘it was lost,’ which would blur personal divine agency.

Heavens Withheld Dew

Approved rendering: आकाश ने ओस देना बन्द कर दिया
Transliteration: ākāśa ne osa denā banda kara diyā
Doctrine: Providence and the Covenant Curses
Original: הַשָּׁמַיִם כָּלְאוּ מִטָּל
Category: Providence

1:10. Avoid impersonal-fatalistic phrasing (‘nature simply failed’); YHWH’s personal, purposive agency behind the drought must remain evident, consistent with the baseline providence entry.

Grain New Wine Oil

Approved rendering: अन्न, नया दाखमधु, तेल
Transliteration: anna, nayā dākhamadhu, tela
Doctrine: Providence and the Covenant Curses
Original: דָּגָן, תִּירוֹשׁ, יִצְהָר
Category: Covenant

1:11’s Deuteronomic covenant blessing/curse triad (Deuteronomy 7:13; 11:14; 28:51). Native speaker review recommended for natural agricultural vocabulary consistent with any future Deuteronomy curriculum.

Feared Before The Lord

Approved rendering: यहोवा का भय मानने लगे
Transliteration: Yahovā kā bhaya mānane lage
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Original: וַיִּירְאוּ הָעָם מִפְּנֵי יְהוָה
Category: Worship

1:12. Reverential awe marking the turn from indifference to obedience — must not read as servile terror.

As Nothing In Your Eyes

Approved rendering: क्या यह तुम्हें कुछ भी नहीं लगता
Transliteration: kyā yaha tumheṃ kucha bhī nahīṃ lagatā
Doctrine: The Coming Glory of the Temple
Original: הֲלוֹא כָמֹהוּ כְּאַיִן בְּעֵינֵיכֶם
Category: Temple/Worship

2:3. Preserve the rhetorical, sympathetic-but-corrective tone acknowledging real discouragement before the promise overturns it.

Be Strong

Approved rendering: हियाव बाँधो
Transliteration: hiyāva bāndho
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Original: חֲזַק
Category: Obedience

2:4, triple imperative addressed to governor, priest, and people alike. Render consistently across all three addressees; grounds courage in the ‘I am with you’ promise immediately following.

Unclean Defiled

Approved rendering: अशुद्ध
Transliteration: aśuddha
Doctrine: Priesthood and the Nature of Holiness
Original: טָמֵא
Category: Sin

2:13-14. Literal ceremonial/ritual impurity within the Levitical framework — a distinct, legitimate use-context from the baseline sin entry’s general caution against अशुद्धता as a gloss for पाप (moral sin); reviewers should not flag this technical usage as drift.

Every Work Of Their Hands

Approved rendering: उनके हाथों का सारा काम
Transliteration: unake hāthoṃ kā sārā kāma
Doctrine: Priesthood and the Nature of Holiness
Original: כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵיהֶם
Category: Providence

2:14. Extends the uncleanness verdict to the community’s total labor prior to obedience, echoing 1:6’s futility-curse imagery from the opposite angle.

Blight Mildew Hail

Approved rendering: झुलसा रोग, गेरुआ रोग, ओला
Transliteration: jhulasā roga, geruā roga, olā
Doctrine: Providence and the Covenant Curses
Original: שִׁדָּפוֹן, יֵרָקוֹן, בָּרָד
Category: Providence

2:17, echoing Deuteronomy 28:22/Amos 4:9. Native speaker review recommended for natural agricultural-disease vocabulary; theologian review recommended for eventual Deuteronomy-curriculum consistency.

Overthrow Throne Of Kingdoms

Approved rendering: राज्यों की राजगद्दियों को मैं पलट दूँगा
Transliteration: rājyoṃ kī rājagaddiyoṃ ko maiṃ palaṭa dūṃgā
Doctrine: The Eschatological Shaking of the Nations
Original: וְהָפַכְתִּי כִּסֵּא מַמְלָכוֹת
Category: Eschatology

2:22. Situates the temple-rebuilding project within YHWH’s sovereignty over all earthly political power, against the backdrop of Zerubbabel’s own limited provincial governorship.

On That Day

Approved rendering: उस दिन
Transliteration: usa dina
Doctrine: The Eschatological Shaking of the Nations
Original: בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא
Category: Eschatology

2:23. Prophetic-eschatological time formula marking the fourth oracle’s reach beyond Zerubbabel’s own lifetime; theologian review recommended to note (without overstatement) the connection to the broader ‘Day of the LORD’ motif across the Twelve Minor Prophets.

Low Risk Terms

Prophet

Approved rendering: भविष्यद्वक्ता
Transliteration: bhaviṣyadvaktā
Doctrine: Inspiration and Authority of the Prophetic Word
Rejected alternatives: ज्योतिषी
Original: נָבִיא
Category: Prophecy

Haggai is this term’s OT prophetic-office referent; do not confuse with astrologer/fortune-teller. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Haggai.

Darius

Approved rendering: दारा
Transliteration: Dārā
Doctrine: Civil and Religious Leadership in Partnership
Original: דָּרְיָוֶשׁ
Category: History

Persian king in whose second regnal year (520 BC) Haggai’s oracles are dated (1:1). Established Hindi Bible OT form (cf. Ezra, Daniel).
