Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — Gospel of John (English–Hindi)
Purpose and Scope
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the Gospel of John, chapters 1–21, anchored theologically in the core passage John 3:1–21 (the Nicodemus discourse) but covering the entire book per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate. It extends, and never contradicts, the baseline Romans/Galatians doctrine_risk_registry.json and the John-specific assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (v1) produced alongside this document. Risk tiers below are copied verbatim from that registry; this document adds the supporting-passage detail, translation-risk reasoning, and chapter-by-chapter coverage confirmation required by PRD Phase 1 Step 4.
Every doctrine below inherits the baseline risk_definitions: Critical (mistranslation destroys essential doctrine; theologian review every occurrence), High (significant confusion/syncretism risk; theologian review), Medium (clarity reduced, meaning preserved; native speaker review), Low (minor imprecision; automated review). This John registry records zero Low-risk doctrines — a reflection of the Fourth Gospel’s unusually dense concentration of Critical/High-risk theological vocabulary (κόσμος alone occurs ~78 times; ἐγώ εἰμι, μένω, and the Paraclete sayings add further density).
Part 1: Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Risk | Key Terms | Supporting Passages (John) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word) | Critical | वचन, एकलौता पुत्र, परमेश्वर का पुत्र, मैं हूँ (absolute), मेरा प्रभु और मेरा परमेश्वर, भेजना | 1:1-3,14,18; 3:13,31; 8:58; 17:5; 20:28 | वचन must never render as शब्द-ब्रह्म/नाद-ब्रह्म (impersonal cosmic sound-source), recasting the eternal personal Son as an impersonal emanation. 8:58’s absolute ἐγώ εἰμι is the closest surface echo in the curriculum to the Advaita Vedanta formula “aham brahmāsmi” (“I am Brahman”); without a mandatory translator note anchoring मैं हूँ to Exodus 3:14, the claim to unique deity risks being heard as confirming the hearer’s own non-dual identity teaching rather than distinguishing Christ as the one true God. | Human theologian |
| 2 | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | Critical | नया जन्म, हवा / पवित्र आत्मा (wordplay), शरीर, पवित्र आत्मा | 3:3-8; 1:12-13 | नया जन्म must never drift toward पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation) — the single highest-stakes instruction in this doctrine, since John 3 is Christianity’s best-known “born again” text and is read by a Hindu-background audience against a background where rebirth is the default religious category. The wind/Spirit wordplay (3:8) has no Hindi lexical equivalent and, without an explicit analogical rendering and translator note, risks an impersonal life-force (prāṇa/vāyu) reading of regeneration. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | High | अनन्त जीवन, परमेश्वर को जानना, विश्वास, जीवन, नाश होना | 3:15-16,36; 5:24; 6:47; 10:28; 17:2-3; 20:31 | अनन्त जीवन must never be explained via अमरता (immortality-through-liberation) or assimilated to moksha’s absorption into an impersonal absolute. John’s own definition of eternal life as relational “knowing” God (17:3) is exceptionally vulnerable to a jnāna-mārga misreading — eternal life attained through the seeker’s own gnosis/self-realization rather than received by faith in response to God’s self-revelation. | Human theologian |
| 4 | God’s Love for the World | Critical | जगत, एकलौता पुत्र, नाश होना | 1:10,29; 3:16-17; 4:42; 12:47 | जगत (never संसार) is the load-bearing term. संसार is the precise Hindu/Buddhist technical term for the cyclical, karma-bound realm of transmigration from which moksha/nirvana offers escape. With κόσμος occurring roughly 78 times — the highest density in the NT — one wrong lexical choice would systematically re-narrate the entire Gospel as a samsara-escape narrative rather than God’s self-giving rescue of his beloved creation. This is the single highest-density collision risk in the whole book. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Critical | दोषी ठहराना / न्याय, दण्ड की आज्ञा, परमेश्वर का क्रोध, ज्योति, अंधकार, दोषी ठहराना / उजागर करना | 3:18-21,36; 5:22-30; 9:39; 12:31,47-48; 16:8-11 | The forensic verdict vocabulary (deliberately parallel to the baseline धर्मी ठहराया जाना) must remain a genuine legal-style verdict, not a descriptive statement of typical outcomes. The light/darkness dualism must stay strictly moral-relational rather than sliding into a metaphysical-substance dualism resembling the guna system (sattva/rajas/tamas) or an impersonal karma-driven mechanism. | Human theologian |
| 6 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | Critical | मैं … हूँ (predicate set), मैं हूँ (absolute), जीवन की रोटी, ज्योति, अच्छा चरवाहा, मार्ग/सच्चाई/जीवन, सच्ची दाखलता | 6:35,48,51; 8:12; 8:58; 10:7,9,11,14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1,5 | The absolute unpredicated ἐγώ εἰμι (8:24,28,58; 13:19; 18:5-6,8) risks being heard as confirming “aham brahmāsmi.” The predicative statement at 14:6 compounds the risk further because मार्ग is itself the Hindu technical term for religious paths (bhakti-mārga, jnāna-mārga, karma-mārga); the exclusive clause must be rendered with full, unqualified force to resist an inclusivist “one path among many” misreading endemic to India’s pluralist environment. | Human theologian |
| 7 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Critical | सहायक, सच्चाई का आत्मा, पवित्र आत्मा, हवा / पवित्र आत्मा wordplay, दोषी ठहराना / उजागर करना | 3:5-8; 14:16-17,26; 15:26; 16:7-15; 20:22 | सहायक must remain fully personal and divine, “another Counselor” of the same kind as Christ, never an impersonal life-force (prāṇa) or diffuse Paramatma-style universal consciousness. सहायक’s ordinary Hindi sense of a subordinate assistant additionally risks understating the Spirit’s co-equal Trinitarian status, requiring supplementary translator notes at every occurrence across chapters 14–16. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | Critical | अपना प्राण देना, मांस और लोहू, पूरा हुआ, पुनरुत्थान, ऊँचे पर उठाया जाना | 1:29,36; 10:11,15,17-18; 6:51-58; 19:30,34,36; 20:1-29 | The “eat my flesh, drink my blood” language (6:51-58) carries exceptional pastoral risk given widespread Hindu vegetarianism, ritual blood-impurity taboos, and the danger of a literal-cannibalism misreading. “It is finished” must preserve the perfect tense’s once-for-all completeness against the repeatable yajna/homa sacrificial cycles of Hindu ritual practice. पुनरुत्थान must never drift toward पुनर्जन्म. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Critical | पिता और मैं एक हैं, मैं पिता में हूँ और पिता मुझ में है, वे भी एक हों, त्रिएकता | 10:30; 14:9-11,20; 17:11,21-23 | ”The Father and I are one” is one of the three highest-stakes new terms in this curriculum: a Hindu-background reader may hear it as confirming the Mahavakya “tat tvam asi” (“That thou art”). John’s own grammar (neuter ἕν, “one thing,” not “one person”) and narrative context (the claim provokes a blasphemy charge — i.e., a claim to be a distinct second divine Person, the opposite of monistic identity-erasure) must be preserved via mandatory translator note. Extension of “oneness” to believers (17:11,21-23) compounds the risk further. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Inspiration and Witness of Scripture | High | गवाही देना / साक्षी, पवित्रशास्त्र को टाला नहीं जा सकता, सच्ची गवाही | 1:7-8; 5:31-39; 10:35; 19:35; 20:30-31; 21:24 | गवाही देना / साक्षी must remain forensic and objective, never softened into a merely subjective devotional “sharing of experience” (anubhava), the ground of religious knowledge emphasized in Hindu bhakti tradition. John’s insistence on datable, checkable, first-hand eyewitness testimony must also be distinguished from Hindu shruti (revelation received by sages through meditative/visionary states). | Human theologian |
| 11 | Worship in Spirit and Truth | High | आराधना, सच्चाई का आत्मा, सच्चाई | 4:20-24; 9:38 | आराधना must never be rendered पूजा, which carries Hindu ritual-offering connotation. The displacement of place-bound worship (4:21-24) requires pastoral sensitivity given the density of Indian pilgrimage-site (tirtha) devotion; the text asserts that worship’s acceptability no longer depends on geographic sanctity, not that place has no significance to piety generally. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Light and Darkness Dualism | High | ज्योति, अंधकार, सच्चाई | 1:4-9; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9:5; 12:35-36,46 | ज्योति and अंधकार must remain a moral-relational category, not a metaphysical-substance dualism resembling the guna system or light-as-divine-emanation imagery common in Advaitic literature (ātman as a spark of divine consciousness). Darkness has no independent ontological status in John’s theology — it is the absence/rejection of light, already decisively overcome. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Signs and Belief | Medium | चिन्ह, विश्वास | 2:11,18,23; 4:48,54; 9:16; 11:47; 20:30-31 | चिन्ह must be distinguished from शुभ-अशुभ चिन्ह (auspicious/inauspicious omens) or ज्योतिष के चिन्ह (astrological signs) common in Indian folk religious practice; John’s signs are revelatory acts intended to produce belief, not omens for fortune-telling. | Native speaker review |
| 14 | Sin and Unbelief | High | पाप, दासत्व / दास, शैतान, दोषी ठहराना / उजागर करना | 1:29; 8:21,24,34,44,46; 9:41; 16:8-9 | पाप must be kept as moral transgression before a personal God, distinguished from ritual impurity and impersonal bad karma. Sin as “slavery” (दासत्व) must be kept consistent with the Gospel’s freedom antithesis; शैतान must remain a real personal being, not an impersonal principle of evil paralleling non-personal cosmic-imbalance concepts. | Human theologian |
| 15 | The Good Shepherd and Pastoral Care | High | अच्छा चरवाहा, अपना प्राण देना, एक ही भेड़शाला एक ही चरवाहा, मेरी भेड़ों को चराना | 10:1-18; 21:15-17 | अच्छा चरवाहा requires native-speaker sensitivity review to ensure the metaphor is not assimilated to competing devotional shepherd-figures in local bhakti tradition (e.g., Krishna as gopala/cowherd-protector). Christ’s voluntary self-giving (10:17-18) must be distinguished from ritual self-immolation or ascetic self-mortification. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Sonship and Adoption: Children of God | High | दत्तक-पुत्रता, मेरे पिता का घर | 1:12-13; 14:2-3 | परमेश्वर की सन्तान must convey full filial status granted by grace — “not of blood nor of the will of the flesh” — guarding against caste-inflected readings in which an adopted or non-biologically-descended child’s status is diminished. मेरे पिता का घर’s “many rooms” must be read as places for distinct, ongoing personal fellowship, not stages in a reincarnation cycle or differentiated levels of a merit-attained cosmic hierarchy (lokas). | Human theologian |
| 17 | Prayer in Jesus’ Name | Medium | मेरे नाम से मांगना, नाम | 14:13-14; 15:16; 16:23-24,26 | मेरे नाम से मांगना must be distinguished from mantra-repetition or name-invocation as an independently efficacious ritual formula (a live concept in Hindu japa/mantra practice); asking “in Christ’s name” is relational and representative, not a verbal incantation with automatic ritual power. | Native speaker review |
| 18 | Assurance and Overcoming the World | High | जगत पर जय पाना, जगत, नाश होना | 10:28-29; 16:33 | मैंने जगत पर जय पाई है must retain the perfect tense’s decisive, already-accomplished sense — settled confidence grounded in Christ’s finished work — not an ongoing struggle with an uncertain outcome resembling karmic uncertainty about one’s fate across future rebirths. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Mission and Sending | Medium | भेजना, गवाही देना | 17:18; 20:21 | भेजना must convey commissioned divine mission continuing the pattern of the Father’s own sending of the Son — the disciples’ sent-ness derives from and mirrors Christ’s, without implying independent or self-generated authority. | Native speaker review |
| 20 | Kingdom of God and the Kingship of Jesus | Medium | परमेश्वर का राज्य, मेरा राज्य इस जगत का नहीं है, यहूदियों का राजा, यीशु का राजत्व | 3:3,5; 18:33-37; 19:19-22 | मेरा राज्य इस जगत का नहीं है must defuse without denying the political charge against Jesus before Pilate; परमेश्वर का राज्य must remain God’s sovereign reign, distinguished from any political, territorial, or nationalist kingdom concept relevant to India’s own political context. | Native speaker review |
| 21 | The Lord’s Supper: Eating Christ’s Flesh and Drinking His Blood | Critical | मांस और लोहू, जीवन की रोटी, शरीर | 6:51-58 | The single highest pastoral-sensitivity passage in the Gospel for a Hindu-background readership: widespread vegetarianism and purity taboos around meat-eating; blood’s strong ritual-impurity associations; risk of the passage being misheard as endorsing literal cannibalism absent explanation. Mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review at every occurrence, with a required translator note distinguishing symbolic-yet-substantial sacrificial appropriation from literal meat-eating. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Confession of Christ’s Deity | Critical | परमेश्वर का पुत्र, परमेश्वर का पवित्र जन, मेरा प्रभु और मेरा परमेश्वर, मसीह | 1:49; 6:69; 11:27; 20:28,31 | These confessional climaxes must retain full, unqualified, personal address of Jesus as both प्रभु and परमेश्वर (20:28) — the Gospel’s climactic deity-of-Christ statement, using two baseline Critical terms exactly as recorded. Each confession must be read as recognition of a unique, exclusive divine identity, not one exalted teacher or holy man among many, a live risk given India’s abundance of revered gurus and holy figures. | Human theologian |
| 23 | The New Commandment of Mutual Love | Medium | नई आज्ञा, रहना, मित्र | 13:34-35; 15:12-17 | नई आज्ञा must retain “as I have loved you” (Christ’s own self-giving love) as the standard, not merely the source, of Christian mutual love — must not be flattened into generic goodwill or civic solidarity. | Native speaker review |
Risk tier totals (must match assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly): Critical = 10, High = 8, Medium = 5, Low = 0. Total requiring human theologian review = 18; total requiring native speaker review = 5; total automated-only = 0.
Part 2: Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Confirmation (John 1–21)
Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate, every chapter of John is confirmed reviewed below, whether or not it introduces new doctrinal vocabulary. The core passage (3:1–21) is the theological anchor of the curriculum but is only one of twenty-one chapters analyzed.
| Ch. | Doctrines Active (by # above) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1, 10, 16, 21 (confession), 8 (Lamb of God anchor) | Prologue establishes the Word’s deity/pre-existence (1:1-3,14,18); John the Baptist’s witness ministry (1:7-8,15,19-34) launches the witness doctrine that structures the whole Gospel; “children of God” (1:12-13) anchors sonship/adoption; “Lamb of God” (1:29,36) is the first substitutionary-death signal, though its full development awaits ch.19; Nathanael’s confession (1:49) previews doctrine #22. Reviewed in full. |
| 2 | 13 | Cana and Temple signs (2:11,18,23) establish the signs-and-belief pattern; glory (महिमा) reused from baseline. Doctrinally thinner chapter — explicitly reviewed and confirmed to introduce no new Critical/High terms beyond what is already logged. |
| 3 | 2, 5, 3, 4, 20 | CORE ANCHOR CHAPTER. New birth (3:3-8), judgment/belief-unbelief (3:18-21,36), God’s love for the world (3:16-17), eternal life (3:15-16,36), kingdom of God (3:3,5), wrath of God (3:36), light/darkness (3:19-21). | 5 | 5, 3, 10, 9 | Sabbath healing controversy; judgment and the Son’s authority to give life (5:22-30) — this chapter’s claim of equal divine prerogative with the Father is a direct forerunner of doctrine #9’s unity theme; eternal life (5:24,39); witness/testimony chain — John the Baptist, the Father, the works, and Scripture (5:31-39); unbelief (implicit throughout). |
| 6 | 6, 21, 3, 14, 13 | Bread of Life “I Am” (6:35,48,51); the flesh-and-blood eucharistic discourse (6:51-58) — flagged Critical, doctrine #21; eternal life (6:27,40,47,54,68); the “draw” language of effectual calling (6:44, extends baseline election); disciples falling away (6:60-66) as sin/unbelief; Peter’s confession “Holy One of God” (6:69, doctrine #22); signs (6:2,14,26,30). |

| 11 | 6, 3, 13, 22 | Resurrection and the Life “I Am” (11:25); eternal life; Lazarus sign (11:47); Martha’s confession (11:27, doctrine #22); this raising narratively foreshadows Christ’s own resurrection (doctrine #8) without yet being that event. |
| 12 | 5, 12, 20, 8 | Judgment (12:31,47-48); light/darkness (12:35-36,46); triumphal entry and kingship (12:13,15); grain-of-wheat death saying and “lifted up” (12:23-24,32-34); Son of Man title; ruler of this world (12:31). |
| 13 | 23, 8 | New commandment of mutual love (13:34-35); footwashing as servant-love paradigm; betrayal narrative begins (13:2,21,26-30) within doctrine #8’s larger arc; Son of Man/glorification (13:31-32); “I am he” self-identification (13:19). |
| 14 | 6, 7, 9, 16, 17 | Way, Truth, and Life “I Am” (14:6); the Paraclete promise begins (14:16-17,26, doctrine #7 anchor); mutual indwelling of Father and Son (14:9-11,20, doctrine #9); Father’s house (14:2-3, doctrine #16); prayer in Jesus’ name begins (14:13-14); peace (14:27, reused baseline). |

Coverage confirmation: All 21 chapters of John have been explicitly reviewed. No chapter is silently omitted. Chapter 2 is the thinnest in new doctrinal density and is noted as such rather than skipped; all other chapters contribute directly to one or more of the 23 registered doctrines.
This document must be read together with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (risk tiers are copied verbatim and must never diverge) and analysis/08_core_glossary.md (term-level detail for every doctrine-key-term listed above). See analysis/04_comparative_theology.md for cross-tradition interpretation of each doctrine and the sensitive-terminology guardrails required before Phase 2 translation.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Hindi name: मसीह (वचन) का ईश्वरत्व और पूर्व-अस्तित्व
Key terms: word_logos, only_begotten_son, son_of_god, absolute_i_am, my_lord_and_my_god, sent
Review routing: Human theologian
वचन (Logos) must never be rendered शब्द-ब्रह्म/नाद-ब्रह्म, Hindu concepts of an impersonal cosmic sound-source, which would recast the eternal, personal Son as an impersonal emanation. The absolute ἐγώ εἰμι (8:58, ‘before Abraham was, I am’) is the closest surface-form echo in the entire curriculum to the Advaita Vedanta formula ‘अहम् ब्रह्मास्मि’ (aham brahmāsmi, ‘I am Brahman’); without a mandatory translator note anchoring मैं हूँ to the Exodus 3:14 divine-Name background, Hindu-background hearers risk reading Christ’s unique deity claim as confirmation of their own tradition’s ego-Absolute identity teaching.
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Hindi name: आत्मा के द्वारा नया जन्म और पुनर्जनन
Key terms: new_birth, spirit_wind_wordplay, flesh, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
नया जन्म must under no circumstance drift toward पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation), which would recast a decisive, once-for-all, Spirit-worked regeneration as one birth among an endless cycle of rebirths — the single highest-stakes instruction in this doctrine, since John 3 is Christianity’s best-known ‘born again’ text. The wind/Spirit wordplay of 3:8 (a single Greek/Hebrew word covering wind, breath, and Spirit) has no Hindi lexical equivalent and requires an explicit analogical rendering with mandatory translator note to avoid an impersonal life-force (prāṇa/vāyu) reading of the Spirit’s regenerating work.
God’s Love for the World
Hindi name: जगत के लिये परमेश्वर का प्रेम
Key terms: world_kosmos, only_begotten_son, perish
Review routing: Human theologian
जगत (never संसार) is this doctrine’s load-bearing term. संसार is the precise Hindu/Buddhist technical term for the cyclical, karma-bound realm of transmigration from which moksha/nirvana offers escape; with κόσμος occurring roughly 78 times across John — far more densely than in any other NT book — a single wrong lexical choice would systematically re-narrate the entire Gospel as a samsara-escape narrative rather than God’s self-giving rescue of his beloved creation through the incarnate Son. This is arguably the single highest-density collision risk in the whole book.
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Hindi name: न्याय और विश्वास/अविश्वास
Key terms: judge_condemn, condemnation, wrath_of_god, light, darkness, convict
Review routing: Human theologian
The forensic verdict vocabulary (दोषी ठहराना, deliberately parallel to धर्मी ठहराया जाना) must remain a genuine legal-style verdict, not a merely descriptive statement of typical outcomes. The light/darkness dualism structuring this doctrine must stay strictly moral-relational (light = truthful, God-oriented life freely embraced or rejected) rather than sliding into a metaphysical-substance dualism resembling the Hindu guna system (sattva/rajas/tamas) or an impersonal cosmic mechanism resembling karma-driven consequence.
The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Hindi name: सात ‘मैं हूँ’ कथन
Key terms: i_am_predicate_statements, absolute_i_am, bread_of_life, light, good_shepherd, way_truth_life, true_vine
Review routing: Human theologian
The absolute unpredicated ἐγώ εἰμι (8:24,28,58; 13:19; 18:5-6,8) risks being heard as the Advaita Vedanta formula ‘aham brahmāsmi’ (I am Brahman) — this curriculum’s single most severe monism-collision term. The predicative statement at 14:6 compounds risk further because मार्ग (‘way’) is itself the Hindu technical term for religious paths (bhakti-mārga, jnāna-mārga, karma-mārga); the exclusive clause ‘no one comes to the Father except through me’ must be rendered with full, unqualified force to resist an inclusivist ‘one path among many’ misreading endemic to India’s religious-pluralism environment.
The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Hindi name: सहायक के रूप में पवित्र आत्मा
Key terms: paraclete_counselor, spirit_of_truth, holy_spirit, spirit_wind_wordplay, convict
Review routing: Human theologian
सहायक must remain fully personal and divine, ‘another Counselor’ of the same kind as Christ himself, never reduced to an impersonal life-force (prāṇa) or diffuse Paramatma-style universal consciousness pervading all things. सहायक’s ordinary Hindi sense of a subordinate assistant additionally risks understating the Spirit’s co-equal Trinitarian status, requiring supplementary translator notes at every occurrence across chapters 14-16.
Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Hindi name: मसीह की प्रायश्चित्तीय मृत्यु और पुनरुत्थान

Review routing: Human theologian
The ‘eat my flesh, drink my blood’ language (6:51-58) carries exceptional pastoral risk given widespread Hindu vegetarianism, ritual blood-impurity taboos, and the danger of a literal-cannibalism misreading — requiring mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review with an explanatory note distinguishing symbolic-yet-substantial sacrificial appropriation from literal meat-eating. ‘It is finished’ (पूरा हुआ) must preserve the perfect tense’s once-for-all completeness, contrasted deliberately with the repeatable yajna/homa sacrificial cycles of Hindu ritual practice, where an offering is never permanently ‘finished.’ पुनरुत्थान must never drift toward पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation).
Unity of the Father and the Son
Hindi name: पिता और पुत्र की एकता
Key terms: father_and_i_are_one, mutual_indwelling_father_son, that_they_may_be_one, trinity
Review routing: Human theologian
पिता और मैं एक हैं (10:30) is one of this curriculum’s three highest-stakes new terms: a Hindu-background reader steeped in Advaita Vedanta may hear it as confirming the Mahavakya ‘तत्त्वमसि’ (tat tvam asi, ‘That thou art’), the Upanishadic teaching of ultimate non-difference between the individual self and the impersonal Absolute. John’s own grammar (neuter ἕν, ‘one thing,’ not ‘one person’) and narrative context (the claim provokes a charge of blasphemy — i.e., claiming to be a second, distinct divine Person, the opposite of monistic identity-erasure) must be preserved via mandatory translator note. The extension of this ‘oneness’ language to believers themselves in 17:11,21-23 compounds the risk further, requiring explicit clarification that this is a unity of love, purpose, and mutual indwelling by the Spirit, never a literal ontological merger.
The Lord’s Supper: Eating Christ’s Flesh and Drinking His Blood
Hindi name: प्रभु का भोज: मसीह का मांस खाना और लोहू पीना
Key terms: flesh_and_blood_eucharistic, bread_of_life, flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
This is one of the highest pastoral-sensitivity passages in the entire Gospel for a Hindu-background readership, for three compounding reasons: (1) widespread vegetarianism and purity taboos around meat-eating make ‘eat flesh, drink blood’ language viscerally repellent apart from its theological content; (2) blood carries strong ritual-impurity associations (menstrual blood, animal sacrifice blood) in Hindu practice; (3) absent explanation, the passage risks being misheard as endorsing literal cannibalism. Mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review at every occurrence, with a required translator note distinguishing this symbolic-yet-substantial sacrificial appropriation from literal meat-eating and from the other three distinct Johannine senses of σάρξ.
Confession of Christ’s Deity
Hindi name: मसीह के ईश्वरत्व का अंगीकार
Key terms: son_of_god, holy_one_of_god, my_lord_and_my_god, messiah
Review routing: Human theologian
These confessional climaxes must retain full, unqualified, personal address of Jesus as both प्रभु and परमेश्वर (20:28) — the Gospel’s climactic deity-of-Christ statement, using two baseline Critical terms that must appear exactly as recorded. Each confession must be read as recognition of a unique, exclusive divine identity, not one exalted teacher or holy man among many, a live risk given India’s abundance of revered gurus and holy figures.
High Risk Doctrines
Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Hindi name: मसीह में विश्वास के द्वारा अनन्त जीवन
Key terms: eternal_life, eternal_life_as_knowing_god, faith, life_zoe, perish
Review routing: Human theologian
अनन्त जीवन must never be explained via अमरता (immortality-through-liberation framing) or assimilated to moksha’s absorption into an impersonal absolute. John’s own definition of eternal life as relational ‘knowing’ God (17:3) is exceptionally vulnerable to a jnāna-mārga misreading in which eternal life is achieved through gnosis or self-realization attained by the seeker’s own effort, rather than through God’s initiating self-revelation (‘whom you have sent’) received by faith.
Inspiration and Witness of Scripture
Hindi name: पवित्रशास्त्र की प्रेरणा और गवाही
Key terms: witness_testify, scripture_cannot_be_broken, testimony_is_true
Review routing: Human theologian
गवाही देना / साक्षी must remain forensic and objective — a truth-claim grounded in direct, verifiable knowledge — never softened into a merely subjective devotional ‘sharing of experience’ (anubhava), the ground of religious knowledge emphasized in Hindu bhakti tradition. John’s insistence on datable, checkable, first-hand eyewitness testimony must also be distinguished from Hindu shruti, revelation received by sages through meditative/visionary states rather than historical eyewitness report.
Worship in Spirit and Truth
Hindi name: आत्मा और सच्चाई में आराधना
Key terms: worship, spirit_and_truth, truth
Review routing: Human theologian
आराधना must never be rendered पूजा, which carries Hindu ritual-offering connotation. The displacement of place-bound worship in 4:21-24 requires pastoral sensitivity given the density of Indian pilgrimage-site (tirtha) devotion; the text asserts that worship’s acceptability before God no longer depends on geographic sanctity, not that place has no significance to piety generally.
Light and Darkness Dualism
Hindi name: ज्योति और अंधकार का द्वैत
Key terms: light, darkness, truth
Review routing: Human theologian
ज्योति and अंधकार must remain a moral-relational category (truthful, God-oriented life versus self-concealing rebellion), not a metaphysical-substance dualism resembling the Hindu guna system (sattva/rajas/tamas as differing qualities of underlying prakriti) or light-as-divine-emanation imagery common in Hindu devotional and Advaitic literature (ātman as a spark of divine consciousness). Darkness has no independent ontological status in John’s theology — it is the absence/rejection of light, already decisively overcome.
Sin and Unbelief
Hindi name: पाप और अविश्वास
Key terms: sin, slavery, devil, convict
Review routing: Human theologian
पाप must be kept as moral transgression before a personal God, distinguished from ritual impurity and from impersonal bad karma. Sin as ‘slavery’ (दासत्व) must be kept consistent with the freedom antithesis established across the Gospel; शैतान must remain a real personal being, not an impersonal principle of evil paralleling non-personal cosmic-imbalance concepts.
The Good Shepherd and Pastoral Care
Hindi name: अच्छा चरवाहा और चरवाही की सेवा
Key terms: good_shepherd, lay_down_life, one_flock_one_shepherd, feed_my_sheep
Review routing: Human theologian
अच्छा चरवाहा requires native-speaker sensitivity review to ensure the shepherd metaphor is not assimilated to competing devotional shepherd-figures in local Hindu bhakti tradition (e.g., Krishna as gopala/cowherd-protector) — theologically distinct concepts that could blur Christ’s unique claim if the metaphor is left unexplained. Christ’s voluntary self-giving (10:17-18) must be distinguished from ritual self-immolation or ascetic self-mortification.
Sonship and Adoption: Children of God
Hindi name: पुत्रत्व और दत्तक-पुत्रता: परमेश्वर की सन्तान
Key terms: children_of_god_adoption, adoption, fathers_house
Review routing: Human theologian
परमेश्वर की सन्तान must convey full filial status granted by grace, ‘not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God’ — guarding against caste-inflected readings in which an adopted or non-biologically-descended child’s status is diminished relative to natural family hierarchy. मेरे पिता का घर’s ‘many rooms’ must be read as places for distinct, ongoing, personal fellowship, not stages in a reincarnation cycle or differentiated levels of a merit-attained cosmic hierarchy (lokas).
Assurance and Overcoming the World
Hindi name: निश्चय और जगत पर जय
Key terms: overcome_the_world, world_kosmos, perish
Review routing: Human theologian
मैंने जगत पर जय पाई है must retain the perfect tense’s decisive, already-accomplished sense — settled confidence grounded in Christ’s finished work — not an ongoing struggle with an uncertain outcome resembling karmic uncertainty about one’s ultimate fate across future rebirths.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Signs and Belief
Hindi name: चिन्ह और विश्वास
Key terms: sign, faith
Review routing: Native speaker review
चिन्ह must be distinguished from शुभ-अशुभ चिन्ह (auspicious/inauspicious omens) or ज्योतिष के चिन्ह (astrological signs) common in Indian folk religious practice — John’s signs are revelatory acts of the incarnate Son intended to produce belief, not omens to be divined for fortune-telling purposes.
Prayer in Jesus’ Name
Hindi name: यीशु के नाम में प्रार्थना
Key terms: ask_in_my_name, name_onoma
Review routing: Native speaker review
मेरे नाम से मांगना must be distinguished from mantra-repetition or name-invocation as an independently efficacious ritual formula (a live concept in Hindu japa/mantra practice); asking ‘in Christ’s name’ is relational and representative — trust in the person named — not a verbal incantation with automatic ritual power.
Mission and Sending
Hindi name: मिशन और भेजा जाना
Key terms: sent, witness_testify
Review routing: Native speaker review
भेजना must convey commissioned divine mission continuing the pattern of the Father’s own sending of the Son — the disciples’ sent-ness derives from and mirrors Christ’s, without implying independent or self-generated authority.
Kingdom of God and the Kingship of Jesus
Hindi name: परमेश्वर का राज्य और यीशु का राजत्व
Key terms: kingdom_of_god, kingdom_not_of_this_world, king_of_the_jews, kingship_of_jesus
Review routing: Native speaker review
मेरा राज्य इस जगत का नहीं है must defuse without denying the political charge against Jesus before Pilate; परमेश्वर का राज्य must remain God’s sovereign reign, distinguished from any political, territorial, or nationalist kingdom concept relevant to India’s own political context.
The New Commandment of Mutual Love
Hindi name: आपस में प्रेम रखने की नई आज्ञा
Key terms: new_commandment, abide, friend
Review routing: Native speaker review
नई आज्ञा must retain ‘as I have loved you’ (Christ’s own self-giving love) as the standard, not merely the source, of Christian mutual love — must not be flattened into generic goodwill or civic solidarity.
