Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Deuteronomy (English → Hindi)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering the core passage (Deuteronomy 6:1-9) and all 34 chapters of Deuteronomy. Terms already fixed in the baseline translation_memory.json are marked [TM REUSE] and rendered exactly as recorded there; no deviation is permitted. New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked [NEW] and are candidates for addition to translation memory during Phase 2.
Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions: Critical = mandatory theologian review every occurrence; High = mandatory theologian review; Medium = native speaker review recommended; Low = automated review sufficient.

| 22 | Only a single Low-risk term (mixed kinds); otherwise reuses established purity/property vocabulary. |

D. New Terms Recommended for Addition to Translation Memory (Phase 2 Action Items)

Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: धार्मिकता
Transliteration: dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, पुण्य, न्याय
CRITICAL: Never use धर्म (Hindu cosmic duty). धार्मिकता = right standing before God received through faith, not a duty performed. Inherited from Romans package; directly reused verbatim at Deuteronomy 9:4-6 (‘not for your righteousness’), one of the clearest OT grace-not-merit statements in the curriculum, routed to the same theologian-review tier as Romans 3-4.
Salvation
Approved rendering: उद्धार
Transliteration: uddhāra
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष, छुटकारा
CRITICAL: NEVER use मुक्ति or मोक्ष — these carry Hindu liberation-from-samsara meaning. उद्धार = deliverance by God through Christ. Inherited from Romans package; the same मुक्ति/मोक्ष prohibition extends directly to Deuteronomy’s ‘life and death’ (जीवन और मृत्यु, Deut 30:15,19) and ‘freedom’ (स्वतंत्रता) vocabulary.
Freedom
Approved rendering: स्वतंत्रता
Transliteration: svatantratā
Doctrine: Freedom
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष
Galatians 2:4; 4:26,31; 5:1,13. Given by Christ, exercised through love-service, never escape from embodiment. Inherited from Romans/Galatians package. In Deuteronomy this term is RESERVED EXCLUSIVELY for the NT Christ-given spiritual liberty and MUST NOT be used for Deuteronomy’s own set_free_slave (आज़ाद करना, Deut 15:12-13) social manumission — the two must remain lexically distinct so learners do not conflate a debt-slave’s release with the New Testament’s soteriological freedom.
Atonement Curse Bearing
Approved rendering: मसीह ने हमारे लिये श्रापित बनकर हमें व्यवस्था के श्राप से छुड़ाया
Transliteration: Masīha ne hamāre liye śrāpita banakara hameṃ vyavasthā ke śrāpa se chuṛāyā
Doctrine: Atonement
Galatians 3:13, citing Deuteronomy 21:23. Christ judicially bearing the law’s death-sentence in the sinner’s place, never absorbing magical curse-power. Inherited from Romans/Galatians package. MANDATORY: Deuteronomy 21:23’s own ‘cursed is he who is hanged’ (cursed_is_he_who_is_hanged) rendering must remain recognizably identical to this Galatians citation, since Paul’s argument depends on readers recognizing the direct OT quotation. Cross-curriculum verbatim consistency check required before Phase 2.
Messiah
Approved rendering: मसीह
Transliteration: Masīha
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: अभिषिक्त व्यक्ति, देव-दूत
Transliterated term; The Anointed One fulfilling OT promise, not one of many divine figures. Inherited from Romans package. This exact guardrail (‘not one of many divine avatars/teachers’) is the model for Deuteronomy’s prophet_like_moses entry, which must resist India’s guru-parampara framework in the same way.
Jesus
Approved rendering: यीशु
Transliteration: Yīśu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईसा, ईशू
BSI OV standard form. Inherited from Romans package; the ultimate referent of Deuteronomy’s prophet_like_moses typology (Acts 3:22; 7:37) and the coming King anticipated in Deuteronomy 17.
God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameśvara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर, भगवान
परमेश्वर (Supreme Lord) is the BSI OV standard; भगवान has broad Hindu deity usage — avoid. Inherited from Romans package. Used throughout Deuteronomy as the covenant referent alongside यहोवा; never flattened into a generic deity-title detachable from covenant particularity.
Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: Prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: स्वामी, ईश्वर
Exclusive, supreme Lordship. Inherited from Romans package. Used in Deuteronomy’s confessional/liturgical rendering of YHWH (यहोवा/प्रभु, see yhwh_lord entry); the exclusive-Lordship guardrail here is the NT continuation of the Shema’s exclusive claim (Deut 6:4).
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा, देव-आत्मा
CRITICAL: Never ब्रह्म or परमात्मा alone. Inherited from Romans package. Provides a necessary contrast reference for Deuteronomy’s soul_nephesh (प्राण) entry, which must not be conflated with yogic prāṇa-energy or an impersonal universal spirit.
Trinity
Approved rendering: त्रिएकता
Transliteration: trieakatā
Doctrine: Trinity
Rejected alternatives: त्रिमूर्ति
NEVER त्रिमूर्ति (Hindu triad). One God in three Persons. Inherited from Romans package; included here as necessary background for teachers addressing historic Jewish/Islamic readings of the Shema’s echad_one as excluding Trinitarian doctrine — Deuteronomy 6:4’s exclusive oneness must not be taught as contradicting this NT revelation, but the Shema’s own polemical target (idolatry/polytheism) must not be conflated with this later doctrinal question either.
Yhwh Lord
Approved rendering: यहोवा / प्रभु
Transliteration: Yahovā / Prabhu
Doctrine: The Shema and Exclusive Love for God
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर (generic, detached from covenant particularity)
Original: יהוה
Category: God
The personal, self-revealed covenant Name of God (Exodus 3:14), used throughout Deuteronomy as the exclusive object of Israel’s worship and love. Aligns with baseline lord/god. Hindi Bible tradition renders YHWH as यहोवा in OT narrative and प्रभु in running confession (6:4). Must never be flattened into a generic ईश्वर detached from covenant particularity — this is the God who redeemed Israel from Egypt.
Echad One
Approved rendering: एक
Transliteration: eka
Doctrine: The Shema and Exclusive Love for God
Original: אֶחָד
Category: God
Deuteronomy 6:4. Exclusive, personal, covenant-making oneness — NOT impersonal Advaitic non-duality (अद्वैत) or Hindu inclusivist ‘all gods are one.’ No lexical alternative exists to reject; the risk is conceptual, closed only by mandatory formula-fixing (‘यहोवा हमारा परमेश्वर एक ही यहोवा है’) plus a mandatory translator note on every occurrence. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence; the single highest-stakes term in the curriculum.
Shema Hear
Approved rendering: सुनो / सुन
Transliteration: suno / suna
Doctrine: The Shema and Exclusive Love for God
Original: שְׁמַע
Category: God
Deuteronomy 6:3-4. Hebrew שמע fuses perception with obedient response — hear-and-obey. Hindi सुनना can read as passive audition only; mandatory translator note required stating this demands obedient response, not mere hearing. Consider transliterating the pericope as a named confession-title ‘शेमा’ on first occurrence per lesson.
The Rock Divine Title
Approved rendering: चट्टान
Transliteration: chaṭṭāna
Doctrine: The Shema and Exclusive Love for God
Original: הַצּוּר
Category: God
Deuteronomy 32:4,15,18,30-31. Divine title for unshakeable steadfastness/refuge. Must never suggest stone-veneration (shaligram/lingam parallel forbidden). Mandatory translator note: metaphor for personal character, not a venerable object possessing divine power. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence.
Vengeance Vindication
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का न्यायपूर्ण बदला
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā nyāyapūrṇa badalā
Doctrine: Divine Vindication and Judgment (Naqam)
Rejected alternatives: बदला (unqualified)
Original: נָקָם
Category: God
Deuteronomy 32:35,41,43. Righteous judicial vindication against covenant-breakers/oppressors — distinct from petty revenge. Direct tension with the baseline wrath_of_god entry’s rejection of बदला; prefer reusing परमेश्वर का क्रोध framing wherever possible. Mandatory theologian review and formal TM resolution before ch. 32 translation.
Blessing And Curse
Approved rendering: आशीष और श्राप
Transliteration: āśīṣa aura śrāpa
Doctrine: Blessings and Curses of the Covenant
Original: הַבְּרָכָה וְהַקְּלָלָה
Category: Blessing_Curse
Deuteronomy 11:26-28; 27-28; 30:1,19. Reuses TM आशीष and श्राप exactly. Unlike Galatians’ anathema, this covenant curse is conditional and reversible through repentance (ch. 30). Must be glossed distinctly so it reads as neither karma-fate nor magic-curse but as the sanctioned consequence-side of a real, personal, renewable covenant relationship. Mandatory theologian review.
Cursed Be Formula
Approved rendering: श्रापित हो
Transliteration: śrāpita ho
Doctrine: Blessings and Curses of the Covenant
Original: אָרוּר
Category: Blessing_Curse
Deuteronomy 27:15-26. The formal, responsively-recited covenant-curse formula. Directly reuses the Galatians TM curse/anathema rendering, but unlike that fixed, individual, non-reversible verdict, this is corporate, conditional, and reversible (chs. 28-30). Mandatory distinguishing translator note required.
Cursed Is He Who Is Hanged
Approved rendering: काठ पर टाँगा हुआ मनुष्य श्रापित है
Transliteration: kāṭha para ṭāṅgā huā manuṣya śrāpita hai
Doctrine: Blessings and Curses of the Covenant
Original: קִלְלַת אֱלֹהִים תָּלוּי
Category: Blessing_Curse
Deuteronomy 21:23, directly quoted in Galatians 3:13. MUST align verbatim, or be recognizably identical to, the existing Galatians TM atonement_curse_bearing rendering — Paul’s argument depends on readers recognizing the direct OT quotation. Mandatory cross-curriculum consistency check and theologian review.
Cherem Devoted Destruction
Approved rendering: सम्पूर्ण विनाश के लिये अर्पण करना
Transliteration: sampūrṇa vināśa ke liye arpaṇa karanā
Doctrine: Holy War and Devoted Destruction (Cherem)
Rejected alternatives: श्रापित (must never merge with anathema/curse)
Original: חֵרֶם
Category: Idolatry
Deuteronomy 7:2,26; 13:15-17; 20:16-18. Holy-war category of total, irrevocable devotion of Canaanite cities to destruction. Must NOT be merged with the baseline anathema/curse (श्रापित) entries — a distinct, time-bound, corporate, old-covenant conquest-mandate category. Must not be generalized into a timeless mandate for religious violence. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence with a distinguishing note. Deliberately NOT transliterated (avoids opaque casual equation with unrelated concepts).
Not For Your Righteousness
Approved rendering: तेरी धार्मिकता के कारण नहीं
Transliteration: terī dhārmikatā ke kāraṇa nahīṃ
Doctrine: Obedience Motivated by Love not Merit
Original: לֹא בְצִדְקָתְךָ
Category: Salvation
Deuteronomy 9:4-6. Reuses TM righteousness/धार्मिकता exactly (baseline Critical). One of the clearest OT grace-not-merit statements in the curriculum, anticipating the NT justification-by-faith antithesis; flagged for the same theologian-review tier as Romans 3-4.
Prophet Like Moses
Approved rendering: मेरे समान एक भविष्यद्वक्ता
Transliteration: mere samāna eka bhaviṣyadvaktā
Doctrine: The Coming Prophet like Moses
Original: נָבִיא כָּמֹנִי
Category: Messianic
Deuteronomy 18:15-19, cited as fulfilled in Christ (Acts 3:22; 7:37). Builds on TM prophet/भविष्यद्वक्ता but elevated to Critical: a direct messianic-typological term. India’s guru-parampara framework risks recasting this as merely the next link in an ongoing teacher-succession rather than a unique, final, eschatological fulfillment. Also contested by Islamic apologetics as pointing to Muhammad. Mandatory translator note distinguishing prophetic succession from Christ’s unique fulfillment; mandatory theologian review.
Word Is Near
Approved rendering: यह वचन तेरे निकट है
Transliteration: yaha vacana tere nikaṭa hai
Doctrine: Choosing Life over Death
Original: קָרוֹב אֵלֶיךָ הַדָּבָר
Category: Revelation
Deuteronomy 30:14, directly quoted by Paul at Romans 10:8. MUST be checked against, and if necessary aligned with, the Romans 10:8 rendering in the completed Phase 2 Romans documents, since Paul’s argument depends on readers recognizing the same words. Mandatory cross-curriculum consistency check and theologian review.
Life And Death
Approved rendering: जीवन और मृत्यु
Transliteration: jīvana aura mṛtyu
Doctrine: Choosing Life over Death
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति/मोक्ष framing (moksha-adjacent rebirth-escape reading, strictly forbidden)
Original: הַחַיִּים וְהַמָּוֶת
Category: Eschatology
Deuteronomy 30:15,19. The climactic covenantal choice: life (blessing, land, relationship with God) versus death (curse, exile, severed relationship). Covenant-relational and this-worldly-plus-eschatological, distinct from but continuous with TM eternal_life. Must be framed as a personal decision before a personal God, never a karma-style inevitable outcome of accumulated deeds, and never an appeal to escape a cycle of rebirth. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence — the second-highest-stakes term in the curriculum after एक.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: अनुग्रह
Transliteration: anugraha
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: कृपा, दया, वरदान, भाग्य, कर्म-फल, पुण्य
Must convey unmerited favor apart from any human merit. Directly counters karma worldview. कृपा may be used for mercy/compassion in non-grace contexts only. Inherited from Romans package; in Deuteronomy this term anchors the required three-way distinction from करुणा (chesed) and दया (mercy) that grounds the ‘Obedience Motivated by Love not Merit’ doctrine (Deut 7:7-9; 9:4-6).
Faith
Approved rendering: विश्वास
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: श्रद्धा, आस्था, भरोसा
Trust in a specific person (Christ/God); not generalized religious devotion. Object of faith must always be specified in context. Distinguish from Hindu śraddhā. Inherited from Romans package; this is the NT counterpart of Deuteronomy’s believe_trust (הֶאְמִינוּ) at 1:32, the OT root of NT faith-vocabulary.
Holy
Approved rendering: पवित्र
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शुद्ध, निर्मल
पवित्र = set apart for God; morally pure. शुद्ध has ritual purity connotations. Inherited from Romans package; Deuteronomy 14’s clean/unclean (शुद्ध/अशुद्ध) dietary laws are the ONE context where शुद्ध is textually correct — reviewers must not flag that exception as violating this पवित्र/शुद्ध distinction.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: पवित्रीकरण
Transliteration: pavitrikaraṇa
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: सफाई, शुद्धिकरण
Process of being made holy by the Spirit. Distinct from Hindu ritual purification (shuddhi). Inherited from Romans package; conceptually anticipated by Deuteronomy’s circumcise_the_heart (हृदय का खतना) and circumcise_heart_gods_act entries.
Election
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का चुनाव
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā cunāva
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, नियति, किस्मत
God’s sovereign personal choice; not karma-determined fate or impersonal destiny. Inherited from Romans package; the चुनाव root is deliberately reused for Deuteronomy’s ‘place the LORD will choose’ (place_lord_will_choose) and underlies the treasured_possession (निज प्रजा) ‘Election and Israel’s Chosenness’ doctrine.
Redemption
Approved rendering: छुटकारा
Transliteration: chuṭakārā
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष
Deliverance secured at a price; never मुक्ति/मोक्ष. Inherited from Romans package; deliberately reused for Deuteronomy’s year_of_release (छुटकारे का वर्ष, Deut 15) since debt-release concretely enacts the Exodus-redemption memory.
Curse
Approved rendering: श्राप / श्रापित
Transliteration: śrāpa / śrāpita
Doctrine: Atonement
Galatians 3:10,13. The law’s judicial curse-sanction; must read as fixed judicial verdict, never a transferable, ritually-liftable curse. Inherited from Romans/Galatians package. Deuteronomy reuses this exact lexical item for blessing_and_curse and cursed_be_formula, BUT the Deuteronomic covenant curse is corporate, conditional, and reversible through repentance (Deut 30) — unlike Galatians’ fixed, individual, non-reversible anathema-verdict. A mandatory distinguishing translator note is required on every Deuteronomy occurrence.
Anathema
Approved rendering: शापित हो
Transliteration: śāpita ho
Doctrine: Gospel
Galatians 1:8-9. God’s judicial curse-sentence, distinguished from ritual curse-magic liftable by counter-ritual. Inherited from Romans/Galatians package. Deuteronomy’s own cherem_devoted_destruction is a DIFFERENT category (corporate holy-war conquest mandate) and must never be merged with this individual gospel-distortion curse-verdict.
Idolatry
Approved rendering: मूर्तिपूजा
Transliteration: mūrtipūjā
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Romans 1:23. Direct term; handle pastorally in Hindu-background contexts but do not soften the biblical claim. Inherited from Romans package; feeds Deuteronomy’s carved_image and golden_calf entries, and grounds the whole ‘Warnings against Idolatry’ doctrine (Deut 4, 7, 9-10, 12-13, 17, 18, 20).
Wrath Of God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का क्रोध
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā krodha
Doctrine: Judgment
Rejected alternatives: बदला
Romans 1:18. God’s settled, righteous judgment against sin; never personal revenge (बदला) or capricious anger. Inherited from Romans package. This entry’s explicit rejection of बदला directly conflicts with Deuteronomy’s vengeance_vindication (נָקָם) at 32:35,41,43 — mandatory theologian resolution required; prefer reusing this परमेश्वर का क्रोध framing (with the qualifier न्यायपूर्ण) rather than introducing unqualified बदला.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī sāmarthya
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: शक्ति, ताकत
Use सामर्थ्य; never शक्ति (Hindu Shakti concept) for GOD’s power. Inherited from Romans package. Deuteronomy’s power_to_get_wealth (8:17-18) deliberately reuses सामर्थ्य for the same reason (God-given, not self-achieved). NOTE: Deuteronomy 6:5’s might_meod also uses शक्ति but for HUMAN capacity offered to God — a different referent, not an exception to this prohibition; flag for reviewers so it is not mistakenly treated as a forbidden-term violation.
Kingship Of Jesus
Approved rendering: यीशु का राजत्व
Transliteration: Yīśu kā rājatva
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Adjacent to the Critical Lordship doctrine. Inherited from Romans package. Deuteronomy 17’s constitutional constraints on Israel’s king (king entry) are the typological template against which this doctrine, and ultimately Christ’s kingship, is measured.
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: दाऊद के वंश से
Transliteration: Dāūda ke vaṃśa se
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Romans 1:3; conveys physical lineage and OT covenant fulfillment. Inherited from Romans package; provides the pattern for reading Deuteronomy 17’s king legislation typologically toward the promised royal line.
Covenant
Approved rendering: वाचा
Transliteration: vācā
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Rejected alternatives: अनुबंध, समझौता
Relational covenant bond; more than a legal contract. Inherited from Romans package. Deuteronomy is itself a covenant-renewal ceremony; वाचा’s relational sense must be sustained across all 34 chapters of legal material so the book does not read as a detached law-code, and extends to वाचा का नवीनीकरण (covenant renewal) as a compound.
New Birth
Approved rendering: नया जन्म
Transliteration: nayā janma
Doctrine: Regeneration
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म
NEVER पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation). Inherited from Romans package. Deuteronomy’s circumcise_heart_gods_act (Deut 30:6, God himself circumcising the heart) anticipates this NT regeneration language without collapsing into it — flag the ch.10 (human duty) to ch.30 (divine promise) grammatical-subject shift as theologically significant.
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: अनन्त जीवन
Transliteration: ananta jīvana
Doctrine: Eschatology
Rejected alternatives: अमरता
Galatians 6:8. Gift-harvest from the Spirit; never liberation-immortality or moksha-style absorption. Inherited from Romans/Galatians package. Deuteronomy’s life_and_death (Deut 30:15,19) is covenant-relational and this-worldly-plus-eschatological — distinct from but continuous with this later NT category; the two must be taught as continuous, not contradictory.
Sovereignty
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की संप्रभुता
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī samprabhutā
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, नियति
God’s personal rule; never impersonal fate/karma. Inherited from Romans package. This guardrail against भाग्य/नियति directly governs Deuteronomy’s blessing_and_curse doctrine (ch. 28), which must never be read as automatic karma-style cosmic retribution.
Providence
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का विधान
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā vidhāna
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, कर्म का नियम
God’s personal, purposive governance. Never भाग्य (fate) or karma language. Inherited from Romans package; extends the same guardrail to Deuteronomy’s blessings-and-curses and power_to_get_wealth doctrine content.
Worship
Approved rendering: आराधना
Transliteration: ārādhanā
Doctrine: Worship
Rejected alternatives: पूजा
NEVER पूजा — carries Hindu ritual-offering connotation. Inherited from Romans package. Directly relevant to Deuteronomy’s exclusive-worship demand of the Shema (6:4-5) and its idolatry warnings; आराधना must remain exclusive to यहोवा, never generalized devotional posture.
Partial Hardening
Approved rendering: आंशिक कठोरता
Transliteration: āṃśika kaṭhoratā
Doctrine: Election
Romans 11:25. Partial and temporary; do not render as final rejection. Inherited from Romans package; conceptually related to Deuteronomy’s heart_to_know (Deut 29:4, ‘a heart to understand’ Israel lacked) — must be glossed connecting the two without collapsing into fatalism.
Promise
Approved rendering: प्रतिज्ञा
Transliteration: pratijñā
Doctrine: Covenant
Rejected alternatives: वरदान, वचन (alone, ambiguous with mere spoken word)
God’s unilateral, unconditional covenant pledge. वरदान forbidden — makes the promise merit-conditioned. Inherited from Galatians package; underlies Deuteronomy’s promised_land as covenant-gift-not-merit and the wider Abrahamic covenant background assumed throughout the book.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: विश्वास की आज्ञाकारिता
Transliteration: viśvāsa kī ājñākāritā
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: धार्मिक नियम पालन, धार्मिक कर्तव्य
Obedience flowing from faith, not works-based obedience achieving standing. Inherited from Romans package. Deuteronomy 6:5’s love_god (love as the ground, not the reward, of obedience) is the OT root of this entire NT doctrine.
Works Of The Law
Approved rendering: व्यवस्था के काम
Transliteration: vyavasthā ke kāma
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: कर्म
NEVER कर्म — imports merit-accumulation cosmology. Inherited from Galatians package. Deuteronomy’s व्यवस्था (Torah) vocabulary throughout the book must never drift toward कर्म-adjacent framing, consistent with this entry’s guardrail.
Sin
Approved rendering: पाप
Transliteration: pāpa
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: अधर्म, अशुद्धता
Moral transgression before a personal God; distinguish from ritual impurity and karma. Inherited from Romans package; foundational for Deuteronomy’s idolatry, golden_calf, and sorcery-adjacent warnings.
Law
Approved rendering: व्यवस्था
Transliteration: vyavasthā
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, शरीयत, नियम
Torah/Mosaic law. NEVER धर्म (Hindu dharma). Inherited from Romans package. Deuteronomy IS this व्यवस्था in its most extensive OT form; the term must retain its personal, covenant-judicial character throughout all 34 chapters, never drifting toward an impersonal cosmic-duty register (see rules_judgments entry for the applied-justice component).
Creator
Approved rendering: सृजनहार
Transliteration: sṛjanahāra
Doctrine: Creation
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्मा
Romans 1:25. Never Hindu creator-deity names. Inherited from Romans package. Directly relevant to Deuteronomy 32:6 (‘is not he your father who created you’), part of the Song of Moses’ the_rock_divine_title material.
Fear The Lord
Approved rendering: भय मानना
Transliteration: bhaya mānanā
Doctrine: The Shema and Exclusive Love for God
Original: יָרֵא
Category: God
Deuteronomy 6:2. Covenantal reverence producing obedience, distinct from (a) craven terror and (b) generic Hindu bhakti-awe transferable to any deity. Object must always be grammatically explicit and exclusive (‘यहोवा का भय मानना’), never a free-floating devotional disposition.
Love God
Approved rendering: प्रेम करना
Transliteration: prema karanā
Doctrine: Obedience Motivated by Love not Merit
Original: אָהַב
Category: Faith
Deuteronomy 6:5. Total covenant devotion, ground of obedience, not its reward. Pattern-consistent with baseline प्रेम family. Anchor every occurrence to the totality formula (मन, प्राण, शक्ति) so it reads as exclusive covenant devotion, not generic bhakti-marga sentiment transferable to any deity.
Jealous God
Approved rendering: जलनशील परमेश्वर
Transliteration: jalanaśīla Parameśvara
Doctrine: Warnings against Idolatry
Original: קַנָּא
Category: God
Deuteronomy 4:24; 5:9. YHWH’s exclusive, zealous covenant claim, the divine correlate of 6:5’s love command. Must be glossed as righteous marriage-like covenant zeal, never petty jealousy or mythological capriciousness. Mandatory theologian review.
Form Likeness
Approved rendering: रूप / आकृति
Transliteration: rūpa / ākṛti
Doctrine: Warnings against Idolatry
Original: תְּמוּנָה
Category: God
Deuteronomy 4:12,15. The visual form Israel did not see at Horeb, grounding the image-prohibition. Must not be confused with nirguna Brahman (impersonal formless-absolute) philosophy — this is a personal God’s self-chosen non-disclosure of form, not an ontological claim of divine formlessness. Mandatory theologian review.
Chesed Steadfast Love
Approved rendering: करुणा (स्थिर वाचा-प्रेम)
Transliteration: karuṇā (sthira vācā-prema)
Doctrine: Obedience Motivated by Love not Merit
Rejected alternatives: अनुग्रह (grace), दया (mercy)
Original: חֶסֶד
Category: God
Deuteronomy 7:9,12. Loyal covenant-faithfulness within an established relationship. Distinct from अनुग्रह (unmerited gift apart from relationship) and दया (compassion toward the miserable). Requires the mandatory gloss ‘स्थिर वाचा-प्रेम’ on every occurrence and the three-way distinction table. Mandatory theologian review.
Face To Face
Approved rendering: आमने-सामने
Transliteration: āmane-sāmane
Doctrine: The Coming Prophet like Moses
Original: פָּנִים אֶל־פָּנִים
Category: God
Deuteronomy 34:10. Moses’ uniquely intimate revelation-encounter. Must be distinguished from Hindu darshan (a devotee’s visionary/auspicious sight of a deity’s image sought for merit or blessing) — this is personal, relational divine self-disclosure to a specific covenant mediator.
Frontlets Totafot
Approved rendering: मस्तक की पट्टी (टोटाफ़ोत)
Transliteration: mastak kī paṭṭī (Toṭāphota)
Doctrine: The Shema and Exclusive Love for God
Original: טוֹטָפֹת
Category: Covenant
Deuteronomy 6:8. Bound bands worn on hand/forehead containing the Shema words, later Jewish tefillin. Must be distinguished from Hindu forehead-marking (तिलक, sect/deity marks). Mandatory translator note on every occurrence stating exclusive covenant loyalty, not devotional/sectarian body-marking. Transliteration retained (टोटाफ़ोत) rather than a generic Hindi descriptive noun alone.
Doorposts Mezuzot
Approved rendering: द्वार की चौकियाँ (मेजूज़ा)
Transliteration: dvāra kī caukiyāṃ (Mejūzā)
Doctrine: The Shema and Exclusive Love for God
Original: מְזֻזוֹת
Category: Covenant
Deuteronomy 6:9. Later literalized as the mezuzah. Hindu households commonly affix auspicious symbols (स्वस्तिक, तोरण, deity images) at doorways for protection/blessing. Mandatory translator note: this is a reminder of covenant devotion to the one true God, never a protective ritual charm or auspicious-symbol practice. Transliteration (मेजूज़ा) retained.
Carved Image
Approved rendering: खुदी हुई मूरत
Transliteration: khudī huī mūrata
Doctrine: Warnings against Idolatry
Original: פֶּסֶל
Category: Idolatry
Deuteronomy 4:16,23,25; 5:8. Feeds TM idolatry/मूर्तिपूजा. Deuteronomy’s fullest aniconism statement; must not be softened in a culture where image-veneration is widespread devotional practice.
False Prophet
Approved rendering: झूठा भविष्यद्वक्ता
Transliteration: jhūṭhā bhaviṣyadvaktā
Doctrine: Warnings against Idolatry
Original: נָבִיא שֶׁקֶר
Category: Idolatry
Deuteronomy 13:1-5. Reuses TM प्रोफेट base but elevated to High: tests prophetic claims against fixed doctrine, not experiential proof — a live concern where many claim prophetic/guru authority.
Golden Calf
Approved rendering: सोने का बछड़ा
Transliteration: sone kā bachaṛā
Doctrine: Warnings against Idolatry
Original: עֵגֶל מַסֵּכָה
Category: Idolatry
Deuteronomy 9:16; 9:4-6. Israel’s own paradigmatic idolatry, feeding TM idolatry/मूर्तिपूजा and directly tying the idolatry doctrine to the grace-not-merit doctrine of 9:4-6.
Treasured Possession
Approved rendering: निज प्रजा
Transliteration: nija prajā
Doctrine: Election and Israel’s Chosenness
Original: סְגֻלָּה
Category: Election
Deuteronomy 7:6-8; 14:2; 26:18. Must be glossed with 7:7-8’s explicit denial of merit so it is never read as caste-like inherent superiority or a status attained through devotion.
Circumcise The Heart
Approved rendering: हृदय का खतना
Transliteration: hṛdaya kā khatanā
Doctrine: Obedience Motivated by Love not Merit
Original: מוּל לֵב
Category: Sanctification
Deuteronomy 10:16. Metaphorical inward transformation beyond the physical covenant sign. Must remain clearly metaphorical, never confused with (a) the literal-circumcision debates of Galatians or (b) generic Hindu heart-purification practices (sattva-shuddhi). Mandatory theologian review.
Circumcise Heart Gods Act
Approved rendering: हृदय का खतना (यहोवा के द्वारा)
Transliteration: hṛdaya kā khatanā (Yahovā ke dvārā)
Doctrine: Obedience Motivated by Love not Merit
Original: וּמָל יהוה אֶת־לְבָבְךָ
Category: Sanctification
Deuteronomy 30:6. God’s own future promised act, completing what human obedience (ch. 10) could not. The grammatical-subject shift (human duty → divine promise) is itself theologically significant, anticipating NT regeneration language (TM new_birth) without collapsing into it. Mandatory theologian review.
Believe Trust
Approved rendering: विश्वास करना
Transliteration: viśvāsa karanā
Doctrine: Choosing Life over Death
Original: הֶאְמִינוּ
Category: Faith
Deuteronomy 1:32. Reuses TM faith/विश्वास exactly — the OT root of NT faith-vocabulary. Object of trust must remain YHWH’s specific promise, not generalized religious confidence.
Test The Lord
Approved rendering: परखना
Transliteration: parakhanā
Doctrine: Choosing Life over Death
Original: נָסָה
Category: Faith
Deuteronomy 6:16, cited by Jesus in Matthew 4:7/Luke 4:12. Must preserve the sense of presumptuously demanding proof of faithfulness, not merely ‘questioning.‘
Forget
Approved rendering: भूल जाना
Transliteration: bhūla jānā
Doctrine: Remembering God’s Redemption
Original: שָׁכַח
Category: Remembering
Deuteronomy 6:12; 8:11,14,19. The direct antonym of याद रखना (remember), the central verb-pair structuring the whole book (chs. 5,7,8,15,16,24,32). Must be rendered with total lexical consistency across every occurrence.
Set Free Slave
Approved rendering: आज़ाद करना
Transliteration: āzāda karanā
Doctrine: Remembering God’s Redemption
Rejected alternatives: स्वतंत्रता
Original: שִׁלַּח חָפְשִׁי
Category: Freedom
Deuteronomy 15:12-13. Literal manumission of a debt-slave. MUST NOT be rendered स्वतंत्रता, reserved exclusively for the Christ-given spiritual liberty of Galatians 5:1. Mandatory cross-curriculum distinguishing note, even though the two are typologically related.
King
Approved rendering: राजा
Transliteration: rājā
Doctrine: Kingship and Messianic Hope
Original: מֶלֶךְ
Category: Messianic
Deuteronomy 17:14-20. Constitutional constraints on Israel’s future king. Flag typological connection to TM kingship_of_jesus and seed_of_david — the constitutional template against which every human king, and ultimately Christ’s kingship, is measured. Must not be read as endorsing kingship as inherently self-glorifying rule.
Heart To Know
Approved rendering: समझने के लिये मन / हृदय
Transliteration: samajhane ke liye man / hṛdaya
Doctrine: Choosing Life over Death
Original: לֵב לָדַעַת
Category: Anthropology
Deuteronomy 29:4. Israel’s stated lack of a heart to understand — an OT hardening motif conceptually related to TM partial_hardening. Must be glossed connecting to the broader biblical hardening theme without collapsing into fatalism or karma-determined incapacity.
Medium Risk Terms
Blessing Of Abraham
Approved rendering: आशीष
Transliteration: āśīṣa
Doctrine: Covenant
Rejected alternatives: आशीर्वाद
आशीर्वाद connotes a reciprocal-favor exchange from elders/gurus/deities; आशीष keeps blessing as God’s own gracious initiative. Inherited from Romans/Galatians package; reused exactly for Deuteronomy’s blessing_and_curse pairing (Deut 11, 27-28).
Sorcery
Approved rendering: जादू-टोना
Transliteration: jādū-ṭonā
Doctrine: Sin
Galatians 5:20. Names a live occult practice in the Indian context; render descriptively, not sensationally. Inherited from Romans/Galatians package; reused exactly for Deuteronomy’s diviner_sorcerer (Deut 18:10-11).
Firstfruits
Approved rendering: पहले फल
Transliteration: pahale phala
Doctrine: Holy Spirit
Original: בִּכּוּרִים
Category: Remembering
Romans 8:23; 11:16; 16:5. Agricultural pledge-of-more-to-come metaphor; guard against any merit or karma-fruit reading. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Deuteronomy’s firstfruits liturgy (Deut 26:1-11), same guardrail applies to the wandering_aramean_credo context.
Church
Approved rendering: कलीसिया
Transliteration: kalīsiyā
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: मंदिर, गिरजाघर
Transliterated term; established Hindi Christian usage. Never use मंदिर. Inherited from Romans package. Deuteronomy’s assembly_of_the_lord (קְהַל יהוה, Deut 23:1-8) is the direct OT root the Septuagint translates as ekklēsia, but MUST NOT be rendered कलीसिया in the Deuteronomy text itself — कलीसिया is reserved exclusively for NT usage; the typological link is for teaching notes only.
Governing Authorities
Approved rendering: शासन के अधिकारी
Transliteration: śāsana ke adhikārī
Doctrine: Civil Authority
Romans 13:1-7. All Romans 13:1-7 content routes to native speaker review. Inherited from Romans package. Deuteronomy’s judges (שֹׁפְטִים, Deut 16:18; 17:9) is a distinct, covenant-internal judicial office and must be kept lexically separate from this general-civil-government term.
Mercy
Approved rendering: दया
Transliteration: dayā
Doctrine: Mercy of God
Kept distinct from अनुग्रह (grace, unmerited favor). दया = compassion toward the miserable. Inherited from Romans package; forms one leg of the mandatory three-way chesed/grace/mercy distinction required by Deuteronomy’s chesed_steadfast_love entry.
Kindness Of God
Approved rendering: कृपा
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Character of God
Romans 11:22 kindness/severity contrast. Permitted here per the grace entry’s note. Inherited from Romans package; must not be substituted for करुणा (chesed) or अनुग्रह (grace) in Deuteronomy’s obedience-motivation doctrine.
Mediator
Approved rendering: मध्यस्थ
Transliteration: madhyastha
Doctrine: Covenant
Galatians 3:19-20 (Moses as mediator of the law at Sinai). Inherited from Galatians package; directly applicable to Deuteronomy 5:5, where Moses again mediates the covenant-renewal at Moab, standing between YHWH and the people.
Heir
Approved rendering: वारिस
Transliteration: vārisa
Doctrine: Covenant
Full inheritance by promise/adoption, never merit-earned. Inherited from Galatians package. Must be kept distinct from Deuteronomy’s tribal_inheritance (बपौती), which names territorial land-inheritance, not personal soteriological heirship.
Slavery
Approved rendering: दासत्व / दास
Transliteration: dāsatva / dāsa
Doctrine: Freedom
Galatians 2:4; 4:1-9,22-31; 5:1. Inherited from Galatians package. Deuteronomy’s set_free_slave (आज़ाद करना) describes literal debt-slave manumission and is typologically related to but must remain lexically distinct from this term’s NT spiritual-bondage sense.
Servant Of Sin
Approved rendering: पाप का सेवक
Transliteration: pāpa kā sevaka
Doctrine: Sin
Galatians 2:17. Inherited from Galatians package. The सेवक (‘servant’) pattern here is reused for Deuteronomy’s honorific servant_of_the_lord (यहोवा का सेवक, Deut 34:5), applied to Moses at his death — a positive, not sinful, sense of the same root.
Israel
Approved rendering: इस्राएल
Transliteration: Isrāela
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Proper name; BSI established form. Inherited from Romans package; used throughout Deuteronomy, most prominently in the Shema’s address ‘सुन, हे इस्राएल’ (Deut 6:4).
David
Approved rendering: दाऊद
Transliteration: Dāūda
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
BSI OV proper name form. Inherited from Romans package; relevant to the typological reading of Deuteronomy 17’s king legislation as anticipating the Davidic and messianic kingship.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: खतना
