Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Hebrews (Hindi Destination Language Package)

Scope and Method

This analysis covers Hebrews 1–13 in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, Hebrews 9:11-28, receives full verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing term. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level section treating its load-bearing theological terms with the same analytical fields. Where a term is already established in the baseline Romans/Galatians Language Package (translation_memory.json), that exact rendering is reused and marked [BASELINE REUSE]; it is not re-litigated here except to note any Hebrews-specific nuance. New terms are proposed with a Hindi rendering, transliteration, and risk tier consistent with the baseline’s guardrails (never धर्म for righteousness/law, never मुक्ति/मोक्ष for salvation/freedom, never पुनर्जन्म for resurrection/rebirth, never अवतार for incarnation, never शक्ति for God’s power, कृपा reserved for non-grace contexts, आशीर्वाद avoided for covenantal blessing, फल always governed by a genitive to avoid कर्म-फल collision).

Each term entry provides: Original (Greek), Transliteration, Literal meaning, Semantic range, English variants (major English Bible traditions), Contextual theological meaning (in Hebrews), and Destination rendering risk (proposed/required Hindi rendering plus risk tier and rationale).

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: HEBREWS 9:11-28 (Verse-by-Verse)

TermsVariantsTheological Meaning in ContextDestination Rendering & Risk

Title/name for Jesus
Christ
Reuse baseline messiah entry (मसीह); here functioning as proper name and title simultaneously.मसीह [BASELINE REUSE] — Critical
ἀρχιερεύς
archiereus
chief priest, high priest
cultic office; in Hebrews always applied typologically to Christ
high priest
Central Hebrews Christological title: Christ’s priestly office surpasses Levitical high priesthood.महायाजक (established BSI term) — Critical; must never be softened to a generic “religious leader” or assimilated to a Brahmin priestly caste role
σκηνή
skēnē
tent, tabernacle
portable sanctuary; by extension the whole OT cultic system
tabernacle, tent
The “greater and more perfect tabernacle” = the heavenly reality of which Moses’ tabernacle was a copy.तम्बू / निवास-स्थान (established) — High; requires OT background note for readers without tabernacle literacy
τελειοτέρας (τέλειος)
teleioteras (teleios)
more complete/perfect

Not aesthetic superiority but eschatological completeness — the reality vs. the copy.पूर्ण / सिद्ध (comparative: अधिक सिद्ध) — Critical; must not suggest self-attained spiritual perfection (siddhi)
ἀχειροποίητος (οὐ χειροποιήτου)
ou cheiropoiētou

TermsVariantsTheological MeaningDestination Rendering & Risk
αἷμα
haima
blood
literal blood; sacrificial/atoning blood
blood
Central Hebrews atonement term: Christ’s own blood, not animal blood, secures access to God. NEW baseline term for this curriculum.लहू (established Hindi Bible term; रक्त avoided as overly clinical) — Critical; must not be flattened to a generic ritual-offering idiom (बलि) that implies a repeatable transaction

goats and calves
The old, repeatable, animal-based system contrasted with Christ’s once-for-all self-offering.बकरा / बछड़ा — Low

once, once for all
single, non-repeatable act
once for all, once
Defining adverb of the whole passage: Christ’s sacrifice is singular and unrepeatable, unlike the annual Yom Kippur ritual.एक ही बार / सदा के लिये एक बार — Critical; must be rendered consistently every occurrence in ch. 9-10 or the “once-for-all” argument is obscured
τὰ ἅγια
ta hagia
the holy things/places
the sanctuary, here the heavenly Holy of Holies

purification of the flesh, external cleansing
Deliberately limited scope — the old system reached only the body, not the conscience (v.14). σάρξ here = the physical body, not the technical fallen-nature sense.शरीर की शुद्धता — High; translators must distinguish this bodily/ritual सार्थ from the technical “flesh” (शरीर) entry used for fallen nature elsewhere — context must disambiguate

Hebrews 9:14

Greek: πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἄμωμον τῷ θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ἡμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργων εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντι

diathēkē
will, testament (secular legal sense) OR covenant
Greek διαθήκη naturally carries both “covenant” and “last will/testament” senses; the author exploits this ambiguity
covenant, will, testament
The author’s argument momentarily shifts to the everyday “last will” sense of διαθήκη to make a legal point about death being required to activate it — then returns to “covenant” in v.18. This wordplay does NOT transfer to Hindi वाचा, which carries only the covenantal/relational sense.वाचा (used throughout, but mandatory translator note explaining the untranslatable Greek wordplay between “covenant” and “last will”) — Critical; flag every occurrence in 9:16-17 for theologian review

This document supplies the Hebrews-specific extension to the Hindi Language Package. It must be read alongside the baseline translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and doctrine_risk_registry.json, none of which it contradicts. New terms proposed here require formal addition to translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 translation begins (see 08_core_glossary.md).
