Core Glossary — 2 Peter (English → Hindi)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, organized by section. | Wishing/desiring (that none perish) | βούλομαι | चाहना/इच्छा रखना | cāhanā/icchā rakhanā | Medium | Patience of God’s Timing | Touches election/universal-offer tension; render without resolving in-text. |
| Day of the Lord | ἡμέρα Κυρίου | प्रभु का दिन | Prabhu kā dina | High | The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | Single definite historical event, not a recurring “day of Brahmā” cosmic cycle. |
| Thief (simile) | κλέπτης | चोर | cora | Low/Medium | Day of the Lord | Keep as simile (“के समान”); suddenness, not moral equivalence, is in view. |
| Elements (physical/cosmic) | στοιχεῖα | मूलतत्व | mūlatattva | High | Day of the Lord | Distinct sense from Galatians’ στοιχεῖα (rendered periphrastically there). Collides with Sāṅkhya/Vaiśeṣika tattva philosophy; mandatory translator note re: linear one-time dissolution vs. eternal cyclical categories. |

Cross-Curriculum Consistency Notes
- स्वतंत्रता (freedom) and दास/दासत्व (slavery) must render 2 Peter 2:19 identically to their Galatians usage — the irony of false teachers “promising freedom” while being “slaves of corruption” depends entirely on the Hindi reader recognizing the same vocabulary Galatians uses for genuine, Christ-given freedom.
- धार्मिकता (righteousness) recurs as a Critical term throughout 2 Peter (1:1; 2:5,7-8,21; 3:13) exactly as in Romans/Galatians; no deviation.
- ज्ञान (epignōsis/gnōsis) is 2 Peter’s own new Critical term, distinct from but adjacent to the baseline’s known_by_god caution (Galatians 4:9); the same translator-note discipline (relational knowing of a personal God, never impersonal self-realization) must govern all occurrences.
- भक्ति (eusebeia) and मूलतत्व (stoicheia, cosmic-elements sense) are the two newly identified Critical/High Hindu-philosophical collision terms this book adds beyond the karma/moksha vocabulary already documented in the Romans/Galatians baseline; both require mandatory theologian review and standing translator notes at every occurrence.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: धार्मिकता
Transliteration: dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, पुण्य, न्याय
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER धर्म. Recurs across all three chapters of 2 Peter (1:1; 2:5,7-8,21; 3:13) with no deviation permitted.
Salvation
Approved rendering: उद्धार
Transliteration: uddhāra
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष, छुटकारा
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष. Occurs at 2 Peter 3:15, directly linked to God’s patience (Patience of God’s Timing doctrine).
Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: Prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: स्वामी, ईश्वर
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout 2 Peter (1:2,8,11,14,16; 2:1,20; 3:2,8,9,10,15,18); anchors the confession that the coming one (parousia) is this same exclusive Lord. स्वामी is reserved for δεσπότης only at 2:1 as a documented, controlled exception.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का पुत्र
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā putra
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर का अंश, देव-पुरुष
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies 2 Peter 1:17’s Transfiguration declaration (‘This is my beloved Son’) — see beloved_son_declaration entry below; never metaphorical or adoptive sonship.
Messiah
Approved rendering: मसीह
Transliteration: Masīha
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: अभिषिक्त व्यक्ति, देव-दूत
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout 2 Peter (1:1,8,11,14,16; 2:20; 3:18).
Jesus
Approved rendering: यीशु
Transliteration: Yīśu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईसा, ईशू
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout 2 Peter.
God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameśvara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर, भगवान
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 2 Peter 1:1’s ‘our God and Savior Jesus Christ’ — a Granville Sharp construction identifying Jesus as God; this appositional unit must never be split by an inserted comma/connective.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा, देव-आत्मा
Original: Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 2 Peter 1:21 (inspiration of Scripture); must be additionally guarded here against आवेश/आवेशित (possession-trance) misreadings — see the new carried_along entry below.
Father
Approved rendering: पिता
Transliteration: Pitā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्मा, सृष्टिकर्ता
Original: Πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 2 Peter 1:17, distinguishing the Father’s voice from the Son present bodily at the Transfiguration — a Trinitarian data-point.
Freedom
Approved rendering: स्वतंत्रता
Transliteration: svatantratā
Doctrine: Freedom
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष
Original: ἐλευθερία
Category: Freedom
Inherited from Galatians package. 2 Peter 2:19: false teachers ironically ‘promise’ this while themselves being slaves of corruption, directly inverting Galatians’ genuine Christ-given freedom. The Hindi rendering must be token-for-token identical to the Galatians Language Package’s rendering or the letter’s central irony is lost. मुक्ति/मोक्ष forbidden with heightened force here.
Savior
Approved rendering: उद्धारकर्ता
Transliteration: uddhārakartā
Doctrine: Deity and Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: त्राता
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Christology
NEW. Built on the TM Critical उद्धार root. Applied to Jesus at 2 Peter 1:1 (‘our God and Savior’), 1:11, 2:20, 3:2,18. त्राता rejected for its mythological hero-rescuer/avatāra resonance — a divine being periodically descending to rescue the world. Mandatory theologian review, especially 1:1’s single-clause deity-of-Christ statement.
Beloved Son Declaration
Approved rendering: मेरा प्रिय पुत्र
Transliteration: merā priya putra
Doctrine: Deity and Sonship of Christ
Original: Υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός
Category: Christology
NEW. 2 Peter 1:17, the Father’s Transfiguration declaration. Continuous with the baseline Critical son_of_god doctrine; must never be softened to honorific or adoptive sonship.
Carried Along
Approved rendering: चालित होकर (पवित्र आत्मा के द्वारा अगुवाई पाकर)
Transliteration: cālita hokara
Doctrine: Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: आवेश/आवेशित (possession-trance)
Original: φερόμενοι (ὑπὸ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου)
Category: Scripture
NEW. 2 Peter 1:21. Single highest-collision term in the core passage. आवेश describes displacement/possession of a human medium (folk oracle/devī possession); this text teaches the opposite — Spirit-superintended authors who remain fully themselves. Mandatory theologian review and standing translator note at every occurrence. Pair with बोले (spoke_from_god) to keep human agency visible.
Knowledge
Approved rendering: ज्ञान
Transliteration: jñāna
Doctrine: Growing in Christian Virtue
Rejected alternatives: समझ (understanding — too weak, loses the relational/revelatory sense), जानकारी (information — reduces to propositional data)
Original: ἐπίγνωσις / γνῶσις
Category: Sanctification
NEW. 2 Peter’s single most theologically loaded recurring term (1:2,3,8; 2:20; 3:18). Collides directly with jñāna-mārga’s liberating self-realization (ātman=Brahman). Qualify where possible as ‘परमेश्वर/प्रभु की पहचान.’ Mandatory theologian review and standing translator note at every occurrence: relational knowing of a personal God, granted by grace, genuinely loseable through apostasy (2:20-22) — unlike Hindu jñāna, typically a permanent, unloseable attainment once realized.
Godliness
Approved rendering: भक्ति
Transliteration: bhakti
Doctrine: Godliness and Devotion to God
Original: εὐσέβεια
Category: Sanctification
NEW. 2 Peter 1:3,6,7; 3:11. Retained as the established Hindi Bible rendering (e.g., 1 Timothy 6:6) despite naming the Hindu bhakti-mārga devotional path (loving surrender to a chosen iṣṭa-devatā, one of several equally valid paths in popular Hindu theology). Every occurrence requires a mandatory translator note: exclusive reverent devotion to the one true God revealed in Christ, produced by the Spirit through the virtue-chain, never an interchangeable devotional option.
Divine Nature
Approved rendering: ईश्वरीय स्वभाव
Transliteration: īśvarīya svabhāva
Doctrine: Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption
Rejected alternatives: तत्व, ईश्वर-तत्व, प्रकृति
Original: θεία φύσις
Category: Divine Nature
NEW. 2 Peter 1:4 — the letter’s signature doctrinal statement and the single highest doctrinal-collision term in the book. तत्व/ईश्वर-तत्व rejected (Advaita ātman=Brahman identity — the self already, essentially, divine); प्रकृति rejected (Sāṅkhya cosmic-Nature-principle merger). स्वभाव keeps the sense at shared moral character and imperishable life granted by grace through union with Christ, not shared ontological essence or self-realized inner divinity. Mandatory theologian review and translator note at every occurrence.
Parousia
Approved rendering: आगमन
Transliteration: āgamana
Doctrine: Certainty of Christ’s Return
Rejected alternatives: अवतरण
Original: παρουσία
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Peter 1:16; 3:4,12. अवतरण rejected — names the Hindu avatāra’s periodic, repeatable descent, which would imply Christ’s return is one of many divine appearances rather than a single, unrepeatable, climactic event. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
Cast Into Tartarus
Approved rendering: अंधकार के गड्ढों में डाल दिया
Transliteration: andhakāra ke gaḍḍhoṅ meṅ ḍāla diyā
Doctrine: Judgment of the Fallen Angels
Rejected alternatives: नरक (Hindu graded, temporary, karma-calibrated purgatory), टारटरस (bare transliteration of the Greek mythological place)
Original: ταρταρόω
Category: Judgment
NEW. 2 Peter 2:4. Double collision hazard: transliterating Tartarus would endorse Greek mythology; नरक would import a temporary, rebirth-oriented karmic purgatory, the opposite of this text’s fixed confinement pending one final judgment. Descriptive periphrasis only. Mandatory theologian review and translator note at every occurrence.
Grow In Grace And Knowledge
Approved rendering: अनुग्रह और ज्ञान में बढ़ना
Transliteration: anugraha aura jñāna meṅ baṛhanā
Doctrine: Growth in Grace and Knowledge (Closing Charge)
Original: αὐξάνετε ἐν χάριτι καὶ γνώσει
Category: Sanctification
NEW. 2 Peter 3:18, the letter’s closing exhortation. Combines the TM अनुग्रह root with this book’s Critical ज्ञान term; the mandatory ज्ञान translator note applies here with full force as the book’s final positive charge.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: अनुग्रह
Transliteration: anugraha
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: कृपा, दया, वरदान, भाग्य, कर्म-फल, पुण्य
Original: χάρις
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Must convey unmerited favor apart from human merit; कृपा permitted only in non-grace contexts. Occurs in 2 Peter 1:2 and 3:18 (closing charge, paired with the Critical ज्ञान term).
Faith
Approved rendering: विश्वास
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith

Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Galatians package. Occurs at 2 Peter 1:4 (precious and very great promises of divine nature) and 3:4,9,13 (the scoffed-at promise of Christ’s coming). वरदान forbidden — would make the promise merit-conditioned.

Doctrine: Eschatology
Rejected alternatives: अमरता
Inherited from Galatians package. Root अनन्त used to build the new compound ‘eternal kingdom’ (अनन्त राज्य) at 2 Peter 1:11.

Inherited from Galatians package. Occurs at 2 Peter 1:1 (Peter’s positive self-designation as Christ’s दास) and, with heightened Critical force via pairing with स्वतंत्रता, at 2:19 (false teachers as ‘slaves of corruption’). Must be identical to Galatians usage; context alone, not vocabulary, distinguishes the positive apostolic self-designation from the polemical usage.
Majestic Glory
Approved rendering: महाप्रतापमय महिमा
Transliteration: mahāpratāpamaya mahimā
Doctrine: Apostolic Eyewitness Authority
Original: μεγαλοπρεπὴς δόξα
Category: God
NEW. 2 Peter 1:17. A reverential divine title standing in for God the Father as speaker at the Transfiguration (echoes OT theophany language, Exodus 24; Deuteronomy 33:26). Built on the TM महिमा root but must never be flattened into ordinary ‘very glorious’ phrasing.

Approved rendering: भोर का तारा
Transliteration: bhora kā tārā
Doctrine: Certainty of Christ’s Return
Original: φωσφόρος
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Peter 1:19 (cf. Revelation 22:16). Mandatory translator note distinguishing this poetic herald-image from Śukra/Venus as a Hindu astrological deity/graha governing fate and auspicious timing.
Scripture
Approved rendering: पवित्रशास्त्र
Transliteration: pavitraśāstra
Doctrine: Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: शास्त्र (bare)
Original: γραφή

Private Interpretation
Approved rendering: निजी व्याख्या
Transliteration: nijī vyākhyā
Doctrine: Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture
Original: ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως
Category: Scripture
NEW. 2 Peter 1:20. Exegetically contested (prophet’s own origination vs. reader’s own interpretation); record both readings as alternatives_considered, do not resolve unilaterally in-text, parallel to the baseline’s handling of ‘Israel of God.‘
Divine Power
Approved rendering: ईश्वरीय सामर्थ्य
Transliteration: īśvarīya sāmarthya
Doctrine: Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption
Rejected alternatives: शक्ति
Original: θεία δύναμις

Approved rendering: सद्गुण
Transliteration: sadguṇa
Doctrine: Growing in Christian Virtue
Rejected alternatives: गुण (bare)
Original: ἀρετή
Category: Sanctification
NEW. 2 Peter 1:3,5. NEVER bare गुण — the technical Sāṅkhya/Vedānta term for the three cosmic material qualities (sattva/rajas/tamas) constituting prakṛti. Retain the compound form only; Spirit-produced moral excellence patterned on Christ, not a cosmic material quality.
Corruption
Approved rendering: विनाश / भ्रष्टता
Transliteration: vināśa / bhraṣṭatā
Doctrine: Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption
Original: φθορά
Category: Divine Nature
NEW. 2 Peter 1:4; 2:12,19. Must not be assimilated to the Hindu māyā/saṃsāra framework in which the material world is inherently, ontologically corrupt and escaped through enlightenment; biblical corruption is caused specifically by sinful desire and remedied through Christ’s imperishable life.
False Teacher
Approved rendering: झूठे शिक्षक
Transliteration: jhūṭhe śikṣaka
Doctrine: False Teachers and Their Judgment
Rejected alternatives: गुरु-based vocabulary
Original: ψευδοδιδάσκαλος
Category: False Teachers
NEW. 2 Peter 2:1. Never गुरु-based vocabulary — carries strong positive connotation of a revered spiritual authority rarely subject to public doctrinal testing in Indian religious culture; flag for combined native speaker/theologian review.
Destruction
Approved rendering: विनाश
Transliteration: vināśa
Doctrine: False Teachers and Their Judgment
Original: ἀπώλεια
Category: Judgment
NEW. 2 Peter 2:1,3; 3:7,9,16. The antonym of उद्धार (salvation); must read as punitive divine judgment on unrepented sin, never a desired dissolution/absorption of individual identity.
Flood Deluge
Approved rendering: जलप्रलय
Transliteration: jalapralaya
Doctrine: Historical Examples of Divine Judgment and Deliverance
Original: κατακλυσμός
Category: Judgment
NEW. 2 Peter 2:5; 3:6. The प्रलय element resonates with Hindu cosmology’s cyclical mahāpralaya recurring at the close of each kalpa; mandatory translator note at every occurrence distinguishing this single, linear, historical judgment from cyclical pralaya cosmology.
Scoffers
Approved rendering: उपहास करनेवाले
Transliteration: upahāsa karanevāle
Doctrine: Certainty of Christ’s Return
Rejected alternatives: संशयवादी (mere ‘skeptics’ — too weak, understates active ridicule)

Patience Of God
Approved rendering: सहनशीलता
Transliteration: sahanaśīlatā
Doctrine: Patience of God’s Timing
Original: μακροθυμία
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Peter 3:9,15. Deliberately distinguished from ὑπομονή’s धीरज (ch. 1). Must not be read as impersonal cosmic delay or fatalistic passivity (contrast yuga-cycle cosmology); God’s patience here is personal, purposeful, relationally motivated by desire for repentance.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभु का दिन
Transliteration: Prabhu kā dina
Doctrine: Day of the Lord and Final Judgment
Original: ἡμέρα Κυρίου
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Peter 3:10. Built on the Critical प्रभु root; a single, definite, certain, future historical event — not a mythologically cyclically-recurring ‘day of Brahmā’ within an endless kalpa cycle.
Elements Cosmic
Approved rendering: मूलतत्व
Transliteration: mūlatattva
Doctrine: Day of the Lord and Final Judgment
Original: στοιχεῖα
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Peter 3:10,12. Deliberately distinct from Galatians’ periphrastic elemental_principles rendering (संसार की आदि शिक्षा), since the Greek senses differ. तत्व resonates with Sāṅkhya/Vaiśeṣika’s eternal, cyclically-recurring elemental categories (pañca mahābhūta); mandatory translator note: one-time, historically-situated physical constituents dissolved in a single final judgment-event, not eternal recurring metaphysical categories.
New Heavens New Earth
Approved rendering: नया आकाश और नई पृथ्वी
Transliteration: nayā ākāśa aura naī pṛthvī
Doctrine: New Heavens and New Earth
Original: καινοὶ οὐρανοὶ καὶ γῆ καινή
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Peter 3:13. Built on the TM नई सृष्टि root. Real, physical, historically-situated renewed creation continuous with the present created order; a single, final, linear consummation — not a mahāpralaya cycle, not a non-physical afterlife realm.
Twist Distort Scripture
Approved rendering: मोड़-तोड़ करना
Transliteration: moṛa-toṛa karanā
Doctrine: Canon and Authority of Scripture
Original: στρεβλόω
Category: Scripture

Original: ἀπόστολος

Approved rendering: प्रताप
Transliteration: pratāpa
Doctrine: Apostolic Eyewitness Authority

Cleverly Devised Myths
Approved rendering: मनगढ़ंत कहानियाँ
Transliteration: manghaṇṭa kahāniyāṅ
Doctrine: Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: पुराण, कथा (alone, too neutral)
Original: σεσοφισμένοι μῦθοι
Category: Scripture
NEW. 2 Peter 1:16. Qualified ‘चतुराई से गढ़ी गई.’ पुराण rejected — would name the Hindu sacred-narrative genre itself and class the gospel with invented mythology.
Eyewitnesses
Approved rendering: प्रत्यक्षदर्शी
Transliteration: pratyakṣadarśī
Doctrine: Apostolic Eyewitness Authority
Rejected alternatives: दर्शन (devotional vision-sight of a deity)
Original: ἐπόπται

Transliteration: svarga se āī huī vāṇī
Doctrine: Apostolic Eyewitness Authority

Transliteration: bhaviṣyavāṇī kā vacana

Transliteration: saṅyama
Doctrine: Growing in Christian Virtue

Approved rendering: दास
Transliteration: dāsa
Doctrine: Apostleship of Peter and Paul
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Church
NEW. 2 Peter 1:1. Built on the baseline दासत्व/दास family. Requires a note distinguishing this positive apostolic self-designation from the polemical ‘slaves of corruption’ usage of the same root at 2:19 — context, not vocabulary, carries the distinction.

Approved rendering: बहुमूल्य/समान मूल्य का विश्वास
Transliteration: bahumūlya/samāna mūlya kā viśvāsa
Doctrine: Equally Precious Faith and Universal Standing
