Core Glossary

Core Glossary — 1 Thessalonians (English/Greek → Hindi)

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, organized by chapter of first occurrence. Terms already present in the baseline Romans/Galatians translation_memory.json are marked (TM reuse) and their baseline rendering is reused exactly without modification. New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked (NEW) and are candidates for addition to translation memory at the version increment following Phase 1 sign-off.

Risk tier definitions (per baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical = human theologian review every occurrence; High = human theologian review; Medium = native speaker review recommended; Low = automated review sufficient.

The following new terms carry High or Critical risk and are recommended for formal addition to translation_memory.json at the next version increment, given their centrality to this curriculum’s named doctrines:

  1. parousia (आगमन) — Critical — Return of Christ
  2. day_of_the_lord (प्रभु का दिन) — Critical — Day of the Lord
  3. hope (आशा) — High — Hope in Grief
  4. asleep_in_death (सो गए हैं) — High — Resurrection of Believers
  5. caught_up / harpazō (उठा लिये जायेंगे) — High — Resurrection of Believers / Return of Christ
  6. meeting_the_lord / apantēsis (अगवानी) — High — Return of Christ
  7. joy_of_the_spirit (पवित्र आत्मा का आनन्द) — High — Hope in Grief
  8. descend / katabainō in Parousia context (उतरेगा) — High — Return of Christ
  9. holiness_state / hagiōsynē (पवित्रता) — High — Sanctification (distinct from पवित्रीकरण)
  10. blameless / amemptōs (निर्दोष) — High — Sanctification / Return of Christ

Critical Risk Terms

Righteousness

Approved rendering: धार्मिकता
Transliteration: dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, पुण्य, न्याय

CRITICAL: Never use धर्म (Hindu cosmic duty). धार्मिकता = right standing before God received through faith. Underlies the adverb δικαίως (‘righteously’) in the devoutly_righteously_blamelessly triad at 1 Thessalonians 2:10. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Salvation

Approved rendering: उद्धार
Transliteration: uddhāra
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष, छुटकारा
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation

CRITICAL: NEVER use मुक्ति or मोक्ष — these carry Hindu liberation-from-samsara meaning. उद्धार = deliverance by God through Christ. Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 5:8-9 (helmet, hope of salvation; destined for salvation not wrath). Landscape review confirms even non-heterodox editions (CBAI) sometimes drift to मुक्ति here; this must never be echoed. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Resurrection

Approved rendering: पुनरुत्थान
Transliteration: punaruttāna
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म, पुनर्जीवन

CRITICAL: NEVER use पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation). पुनरुत्थान = bodily resurrection, once-for-all. Governs every resurrection-family verb in this letter (raised_from_the_dead, christ_rose_again, dead_will_rise below) — all must remain consistent with this noun. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Lord

Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: Prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: स्वामी, ईश्वर
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Established term. Must convey exclusive, supreme Lordship; used throughout 1 Thessalonians, especially of Christ’s coming (4:16-17; 5:2) and his own action (4:16, ‘the Lord himself’). Landscape review confirms NWT-HI substitutes यहोवा for κύριος in this letter’s ‘day of the Lord’ — this must never be echoed. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Son Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का पुत्र
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā putra
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर का अंश, देव-पुरुष
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ / τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: Full phrase required. Underlies 1 Thessalonians 1:10’s ‘waiting for his Son from heaven,’ the letter’s first occurrence of the Return of Christ doctrine. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Jesus

Approved rendering: यीशु
Transliteration: Yīśu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईसा, ईशू

BSI OV standard form. Used throughout 1 Thessalonians (1:1,3,10; 4:14; 5:9,23, etc.). (Inherited from Romans package.)

God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameśvara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर, भगवान

परमेश्वर (Supreme Lord) is the BSI OV standard, preferred for doctrinal precision. भगवान has broad Hindu deity usage — avoid. Used throughout 1 Thessalonians. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा, देव-आत्मा
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God

CRITICAL: Never use ब्रह्म or परमात्मा alone. पवित्र आत्मा is the personal Holy Spirit, active in gospel proclamation (1:5-6), joy (1:6), teaching brotherly love (4:9), and quenchable resistance (5:19). At 5:19 (‘do not quench the Spirit’) the personal Spirit’s activity being resisted must not be confused with extinguishing an impersonal life-force (प्राण). At 5:23 आत्मा also names the human spirit in the tripartite formula — context must disambiguate; see whole_spirit_soul_body entry below. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Raised From The Dead

Approved rendering: जिन्हें उसने मरे हुओं में से जिलाया
Transliteration: jinheṅ usane mare huoṅ meṅ se jilāyā
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म-family renderings
Original: ἐγείρω (ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν)
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 1:10. Verb-form partner to the baseline Critical resurrection noun. NEVER पुनर्जन्म; must be rendered consistently with christ_rose_again and dead_will_rise below.

Parousia

Approved rendering: आगमन
Transliteration: āgamana
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Rejected alternatives: अवतरण, अवतार, उपस्थिति
Original: παρουσία
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 2:19; 3:13; 4:15; 5:23 (implied at 1:10). The single highest-stakes term in this curriculum. NEVER अवतार/अवतरण — Hindu eschatology anticipates Kalki’s future cyclical descent at the end of Kali Yuga, a repeatable divine-descent pattern fundamentally unlike Christ’s single, unrepeatable, personal, bodily return of the SAME historical Jesus who already died and rose. NEVER उपस्थिति (‘presence’) — this is the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ NWT-HI rendering reflecting their invisible-1914-presence doctrine and must never be echoed; it denies the visible, bodily, event-like nature of the Return described in maximally concrete terms at 4:16-17. Mandatory translator note and mandatory theologian review on every occurrence.

Christ Rose Again

Approved rendering: जी उठा
Transliteration: jī uṭhā
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म-family renderings
Original: ἀνίστημι (ἀνέστη)
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:14. Verb-form partner to the baseline Critical पुनरुत्थान noun; the ground and pattern for the resurrection of believers. NEVER पुनर्जन्म; use consistently with raised_from_the_dead and dead_will_rise.

The Lord Himself

Approved rendering: प्रभु स्वयं
Transliteration: Prabhu svayaṃ
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: αὐτὸς ὁ κύριος
Category: Christology

1 Thessalonians 4:16. प्रभु reused exactly per the baseline Critical Lordship doctrine; the emphatic ‘himself’ must not be dropped — this is Christ’s own personal action, not a delegated angelic event.

Dead Will Rise

Approved rendering: जी उठेंगे
Transliteration: jī uṭheṅge
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म-family renderings
Original: ἀναστήσονται (ἀνίστημι)
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:16. The first stage of the Parousia sequence — bodily resurrection of dead believers. NEVER पुनर्जन्म; consistent with christ_rose_again and raised_from_the_dead.

Day Of The Lord

Approved rendering: प्रभु का दिन
Transliteration: Prabhu kā dina
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: यहोवा का दिन
Original: ἡμέρα κυρίου
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 5:2. Central doctrine term. NEVER यहोवा का दिन — this is NWT-HI’s substitution reflecting their κύριος→Jehovah pattern and must never be echoed; it wrongly severs the Day of the Lord from its Pauline association with the return of the Lord Jesus specifically. Hindu cosmology’s cyclical dissolution (pralaya) recurring at the end of each kalpa, followed by a new creation cycle, is a repeatable pattern fundamentally unlike this single, historical, linear, once-for-all day of divine judgment and vindication. Mandatory translator note on every occurrence; mandatory theologian review.

High Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: सुसमाचार
Transliteration: susamācar
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: खुशखबरी, शुभ सन्देश
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Gospel

Established BSI OV term. Do not use colloquial alternatives. Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 1:5; 2:2-9; 3:2. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Grace

Approved rendering: अनुग्रह
Transliteration: anugraha
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: कृपा, दया, वरदान, भाग्य, कर्म-फल, पुण्य
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Must convey unmerited favor apart from any human merit. Directly counters karma worldview. कृपा may be used for mercy/compassion in non-grace contexts only. Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 1:1. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Faith

Approved rendering: विश्वास
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: श्रद्धा, आस्था, भरोसा
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Trust in a specific person (Christ/God); not generalized religious devotion. Object of faith must always be specified in context. Distinguish from Hindu śraddhā. Occurs throughout 1 Thessalonians (1:3,8; 3:2-10; 5:8). (Inherited from Romans package.)

Called

Approved rendering: बुलाए हुए
Transliteration: bulāe hue
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: निमंत्रित, आमंत्रित

Context-sensitive across senses (calling to sainthood, to God’s kingdom and glory, effectual calling to salvation). Relevant at 1 Thessalonians 2:12; 4:7; 5:24. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Calling

Approved rendering: बुलाहट
Transliteration: bulāhaṭ
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: आह्वान

Noun form for the act/state of being called. Relevant to the divine_election_and_calling doctrine underlying 1 Thessalonians 1:4; 2:12; 5:24. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Holy

Approved rendering: पवित्र
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शुद्ध, निर्मल

पवित्र = set apart for God; morally pure. शुद्ध has ritual purity connotations. Root of every पवित्र- compound in this letter (पवित्रीकरण, पवित्रता, पवित्र आत्मा, पवित्र जन). (Inherited from Romans package.)

Saints

Approved rendering: पवित्र जन
Transliteration: pavitra jana
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: संत, संतजन
Original: ἅγιοι (μετὰ πάντων τῶν ἁγίων αὐτοῦ)
Category: Church

संत in Indian culture = ascetic holy man. पवित्र जन = all believers called to holiness. Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 3:13 (‘with all his saints’); corporate, communal Parousia event, never a private individual attainment. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Sanctification

Approved rendering: पवित्रीकरण
Transliteration: pavitrikaraṇa
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: सफाई, शुद्धिकरण
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification

Process of being made holy by the Spirit; distinct from Hindu ritual purification (shuddhi). Central term of 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8. Must be kept lexically distinct from the new term holiness_state (पवित्रता), which names the resulting condition rather than the ongoing process — see holiness_state entry below. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Sin

Approved rendering: पाप
Transliteration: pāpa
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: अधर्म, अशुद्धता

Moral transgression before a personal God. Distinguish from ritual impurity (अशुद्धता, which this letter also uses at 4:7 in a specifically moral, not ritual, sense — see impurity entry below) and bad karma. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Glory

Approved rendering: महिमा
Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: देव-ज्योति, प्रकाश

God’s radiant presence and honor. Avoid light-metaphors that could conflate with Hindu divine light concepts — this caution extends to 1 Thessalonians 5:5’s ‘sons of light’ (see sons_of_light entry below). Component of 2:12’s calling-into-glory formula. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Election

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का चुनाव
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā cunāva
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: भाग्य, नियति, किस्मत
Original: ἐκλογή
Category: Salvation

God’s sovereign personal choice; not karma-determined fate or impersonal destiny. Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 1:4. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Wrath Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का क्रोध
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā krodha
Doctrine: Judgment
Rejected alternatives: बदला
Original: ὀργή
Category: God

God’s settled, righteous judgment against sin; never personal revenge (बदला). Bookends 1 Thessalonians (1:10; 5:9); must retain identical rendering and force at both occurrences. Never render ‘day of the Lord’ as ‘day of Jehovah’s wrath’ or similar NWT-HI-style substitutions. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Idolatry

Approved rendering: मूर्तिपूजा
Transliteration: mūrtipūjā
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: εἰδωλολατρία / τῶν εἰδώλων
Category: Sin

Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 1:9 (‘turned to God from idols’). Handle pastorally given the Thessalonian church’s own Gentile idol-worshiping background, but do not soften the biblical claim. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Flesh

Approved rendering: शरीर
Transliteration: śarīra
Doctrine: Sin
Rejected alternatives: देह (in sarx contexts)

In sinful-desire contexts render the full phrase शरीर की अभिलाषाएँ. Relevant background for 1 Thessalonians 4:5’s ἐπιθυμία (passion/lust) — see passion_lust entry below, which draws on this construction. (Inherited from Romans package.)

In Christ

Approved rendering: मसीह में
Transliteration: Masīha meṃ
Doctrine: Christology

Personal union/incorporation formula; never mystical absorption into the divine. Underlies 1 Thessalonians 4:16’s ‘the dead in Christ’ — see dead_in_christ entry below, which extends the same guardrails used for christ_lives_in_me in the Galatians baseline. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Hope

Approved rendering: आशा
Transliteration: āśā
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Hope

1 Thessalonians 1:3; 4:13; 5:8. Standard Hindi for hope/wish but carries no inherent doctrinal grounding in ordinary or Hindu religious usage (including hope for a favorable rebirth). Every occurrence must keep the specific object of hope (resurrection, Christ’s return, salvation) explicit in the same or adjacent clause, never left to float as unattached optimism. Central High-risk term for the Hope in Grief doctrine; recommended fixed across the whole curriculum.

Steadfastness Of Hope

Approved rendering: आशा का धैर्य
Transliteration: āśā kā dhairya
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: ὑπομονὴ τῆς ἐλπίδος
Category: Hope

1 Thessalonians 1:3. Active perseverance grounded in and sustained by certain hope; must not read as passive resignation or karma-endurance.

Joy Of The Spirit

Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा का आनन्द
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā kā ānanda
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Rejected alternatives: आनन्द (bare, without the genitive)
Original: χαρὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου
Category: Hope

1 Thessalonians 1:6; 5:16. आनन्द is the established Hindi rendering for joy but is also the central term of Vedantic bliss-metaphysics (Sat-Chit-Ānanda; Brahman’s own bliss-nature attained through enlightenment/moksha). The genitive ‘पवित्र आत्मा का’ must never be dropped under any circumstances, even for brevity, keeping this joy explicitly Spirit-produced and personally sourced, not an impersonal blissful state attained through meditation or self-realization. Theologian review recommended on first occurrence.

Living And True God

Approved rendering: जीविते और सच्चे परमेश्वर
Transliteration: jīvita aur sacce Parameśvara
Doctrine: Turning from Idolatry to the Living God
Original: Θεῷ ζῶντι καὶ ἀληθινῷ
Category: God

1 Thessalonians 1:9. A polemical formula contrasting God with lifeless idols. Many Hindu devotees understand a consecrated mūrti as itself indwelt by divine presence through prāṇa-pratiṣṭhā (‘installation of life-breath’), not as an inert object. A translator note is required clarifying the contrast is between the Creator’s own independent, eternal life and any man-made image regardless of ritual consecration claims.

Waiting For The Son

Approved rendering: उसके पुत्र की स्वर्ग से बाट जोहना
Transliteration: usake putra kī svarga se bāṭa jauhanā
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: ἀναμένειν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 1:10. Combines the Critical son_of_god term with expectant-waiting language, establishing the Parousia theme from the letter’s opening. Must be kept as expectant waiting for a specific person’s specific, promised arrival, never a vague future hope.

Devoutly Righteously Blamelessly

Approved rendering: पवित्रता, धार्मिकता और निर्दोष रीति से
Transliteration: pavitratā, dhārmikatā aur nirdoṣa rīti se
Doctrine: Blamelessness at Christ’s Coming
Original: ὁσίως καὶ δικαίως καὶ ἀμέμπτως
Category: Sanctification

1 Thessalonians 2:10. धार्मिकता reused exactly per baseline (never धर्म). निर्दोष (blameless) recurs at 3:13 and 5:23 and must be fixed as the single consistent rendering across all three occurrences — see blameless entry below.

Called Into Kingdom And Glory

Approved rendering: अपने राज्य और महिमा में बुलानेवाला
Transliteration: apane rājya aur mahimā meṅ bulānevālā
Doctrine: Divine Election and Calling
Original: καλοῦντος ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ βασιλείαν καὶ δόξαν
Category: Church

1 Thessalonians 2:12. Combines called/kingdom_of_god/glory baseline terms into a single eschatological summons formula; must not be softened into a vague general blessing.

Holiness State

Approved rendering: पवित्रता
Transliteration: pavitratā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: पवित्रीकरण (reserved for the ongoing process)
Original: ἁγιωσύνη
Category: Sanctification

1 Thessalonians 3:13 (ἁγιωσύνη). Names the resulting CONDITION of holiness in which hearts are established blameless at the Parousia, distinct from the ongoing Spirit-worked PROCESS named by ἁγιασμός/पवित्रीकरण (4:3-7; 5:23). This is a hard, non-optional lexical split internal to Hindi (not itself a Hindu-vocabulary collision) — collapsing both Greek terms into one Hindi word would erase the letter’s careful process/state distinction that is load-bearing for the Sanctification doctrine.

Blameless

Approved rendering: निर्दोष
Transliteration: nirdoṣa
Doctrine: Blamelessness at Christ’s Coming
Rejected alternatives: दोषरहित, निष्कलंक (rejected as inconsistent alternates that would break the pattern)
Original: ἄμεμπτος / ἀμέμπτως
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 2:10; 3:13; 5:23. Must be rendered identically at all three occurrences — this is the letter’s own structural bracket tying present ethical conduct to future accountability at Christ’s coming. Any Phase 2 deviation at even one occurrence breaks the three-point structural echo.

Asleep In Death

Approved rendering: सो गए हैं
Transliteration: so gae haiṅ
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Rejected alternatives: soul-sleep-implying glosses, reincarnation-interim-implying glosses
Original: κοιμάομαι (κοιμωμένων / κοιμηθέντας)
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:13,14,15. A euphemism for the death of believers, a settled, reversible state awaiting bodily resurrection. Must be glossed on first use as guaranteed to be reversed at a single future bodily resurrection. Must NOT be read as (a) soul-sleep as a doctrine of the intermediate state, or (b) an interim resting phase within a reincarnation cycle before a new birth — both live folk-theological options for a Hindu-background hearer. NWT-HI’s soul-annihilation framing must never be echoed.

Grieve

Approved rendering: शोक करना
Transliteration: śoka karanā
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: λυπέω (λυπῆσθε)
Category: Hope

1 Thessalonians 4:13. The Hindi must preserve the contrast ‘grieve — but not as those without hope,’ never softened into ‘do not grieve.’ Christian grief is real grief transformed by resurrection hope, not stoic suppression of emotion.

Descend

Approved rendering: उतरेगा
Transliteration: utaregā
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Rejected alternatives: अवतरित होगा, अवतार लेगा
Original: καταβαίνω (καταβήσεται)
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:16. This action-concept sits directly adjacent to अवतार (avatāra), whose etymology means ‘descent’ (ava + tāra) — the recurring, cyclical descent of a deity into the world. NEVER अवतरित होगा/अवतार लेगा (confirmed active drift in inculturation editions). Mandatory translator note distinguishing Christ’s single historical descent-in-return (the same, already incarnate, already resurrected, ascended Jesus returning once) from the Hindu avatāra pattern of cyclical divine descent across ages.

Dead In Christ

Approved rendering: मसीह में मरे हुए
Transliteration: Masīha meṅ mare hue
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: οἱ νεκροὶ ἐν Χριστῷ
Category: Christology

1 Thessalonians 4:16. मसीह में reused exactly per the Galatians baseline in_christ entry; guard against any reading of ‘in Christ’ as mystical absorption rather than personal union persisting through death — the same guardrail applied to christ_lives_in_me.

Caught Up

Approved rendering: उठा लिये जायेंगे
Transliteration: uṭhā liye jāyeṅge
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Rejected alternatives: उड़ जायेंगे, स्वयं ऊपर जायेंगे (active/self-propelled ascent)
Original: ἁρπάζω (ἁρπαγησόμεθα)
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:17. Underlies the English theological term ‘the rapture.’ Passive voice must be preserved — this happens TO believers by divine action, unlike yogic/siddha traditions of ascetics said to have attained bodily ascension (deha-vimoksha) through spiritual discipline or siddhi. A single, corporate, historical, once-for-all event, never a repeatable mystical attainment available to advanced practitioners. Landscape review confirms active/self-propelled verbs circulate in some paraphrase/devotional editions — these must never be echoed.

Meeting The Lord

Approved rendering: अगवानी
Transliteration: agavānī
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Rejected alternatives: मिलना (flat/generic ‘meeting’)
Original: εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ κυρίου
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:17. A technical Hellenistic term for a delegation going OUT from a city to formally welcome and escort back an arriving dignitary. A flat/generic Hindi word for ‘meeting’ would lose this dignitary-welcome background and could be misread as believers being taken away permanently rather than going out to escort the returning King. Mandatory translator note explaining the civic-welcome background on first use.

Always With The Lord

Approved rendering: सदा प्रभु के साथ
Transliteration: sadā Prabhu ke sātha
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: πάντοτε σὺν κυρίῳ
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:17. The climactic promise and pastoral answer to the Thessalonians’ grief. Must retain the personal, relational, eternal (not cyclical) sense — not dissolution into an impersonal absolute; a generic ‘eternal happiness’ gloss would lose the specifically relational, Christ-centered content.

Destruction

Approved rendering: विनाश
Transliteration: vināśa
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ὄλεθρος
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 5:3. विनाश/संहार is also the standard Hindi vocabulary for pralaya, one phase of a recurring creation-preservation-destruction cycle (associated with Shiva as destroyer). This passage’s ὄλεθρος is a definitive, final, UNREPEATED judgment on the unprepared at a specific historical moment, not a phase in an ongoing cosmic cycle followed by renewed creation. Translator note affirming finality/non-repetition required on every occurrence.

Helmet Hope Of Salvation

Approved rendering: उद्धार की आशा का टोप
Transliteration: uddhāra kī āśā kā ṭopa
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष
Original: περικεφαλαία, ἐλπὶς σωτηρίας
Category: Salvation

1 Thessalonians 5:8. उद्धार reused exactly per baseline (never मुक्ति/मोक्ष); आशा carries the same High-risk profile established for hope elsewhere — the object of hope (final salvation) must remain explicit.

Destined For Salvation Not Wrath

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर ने हमें क्रोध के लिये नहीं, परन्तु उद्धार पाने के लिये ठहराया है
Transliteration: Parameśvara ne hameṅ krodha ke liye nahīṅ, parantu uddhāra pāne ke liye ṭhaharāyā hai
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation
Original: ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλὰ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας
Category: Salvation

1 Thessalonians 5:9. परमेश्वर का क्रोध and उद्धार both reused exactly per baseline; the contrastive ‘not X but Y’ structure is load-bearing for assurance and must not be flattened into a single positive statement.

Sanctify Wholly

Approved rendering: तुम्हें पूरी तरह पवित्र करे
Transliteration: tumheṅ pūrī taraha pavitra kare
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς
Category: Sanctification

1 Thessalonians 5:23. पवित्र reused per baseline; ‘wholly’ (ὁλοτελεῖς) must be preserved to avoid a reading of partial or merely ritual holiness. Closing prayer summarizing the whole letter’s Sanctification doctrine.

Whole Spirit Soul Body

Approved rendering: तुम्हारी आत्मा और प्राण और देह पूरी तरह
Transliteration: tumhārī ātmā aur prāṇa aur deha pūrī taraha
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ὁλόκληρον τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα
Category: Sanctification

1 Thessalonians 5:23. A tripartite/holistic description of the whole human person kept sound at the Parousia. आत्मा (spirit) is the SAME Hindi word used for ‘Holy Spirit’ (पवित्र आत्मा) elsewhere and also doubles as ātman in Hindu metaphysics (individual self identical with/absorbed into Brahman) — context must disambiguate; recommend explicit ‘मनुष्य की आत्मा’ where the human-spirit sense is intended. प्राण also denotes vital breath/life-force in yogic physiology (prāṇāyāma). Must not imply a detachable soul destined for transmigration into another body, nor collapse into a Vedantic prāṇa-kośa (sheath) anthropology. Theologian review recommended.

Faithful Is He Who Calls

Approved rendering: जो तुम्हें बुलाता है वह विश्वासयोग्य है
Transliteration: jo tumheṅ bulātā hai vaha viśvāsayogya hai
Doctrine: Divine Election and Calling
Original: πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν ὑμᾶς
Category: God

1 Thessalonians 5:24. बुलाता है reused per the baseline बुलाहट/बुलाए हुए family; grounds the assurance of the preceding prayer in God’s own unchanging, faithful character, not the believer’s spiritual attainment.

Medium Risk Terms

Peace

Approved rendering: शांति
Transliteration: śānti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: चैन, सुकून
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation

Genuine relational peace with God at 1 Thessalonians 1:1. NOTE: at 5:3 the same Hindi word must instead render a FALSE, ironic ‘peace and security’ — see peace_and_security_false entry below; the two senses must be disambiguated by narrative framing, not by a different word. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Church

Approved rendering: कलीसिया
Transliteration: kalīsiyā
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: मंदिर, गिरजाघर
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

Transliterated term; established in Hindi Christian usage. Never use मंदिर. Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 1:1. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर का राज्य
Transliteration: Parameśvara kā rājya
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वर का राष्ट्र

God’s sovereign reign. Component of 1 Thessalonians 2:12’s ‘calling you into his own kingdom and glory’ — see called_into_kingdom_and_glory entry below. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Gentiles

Approved rendering: अन्यजाति
Transliteration: anyajāti
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: विदेशी

Non-Jews; established BSI term. Underlies 1 Thessalonians 4:5’s ‘Gentiles who do not know God’ — see gentiles_who_do_not_know_god entry below. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Brotherly Love

Approved rendering: भाईचारे का प्रेम
Transliteration: bhāīcāre kā prema
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: φιλαδελφία
Category: Church

Philadelphia. Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 4:9-10; the Thessalonians are said to already practice this, taught directly by God — see taught_by_god entry below. Distinct from संगति (fellowship/koinonia). (Inherited from Romans package.)

Work Of Faith

Approved rendering: विश्वास का काम
Transliteration: viśvāsa kā kāma
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: विश्वास का कर्म
Original: ἔργον τῆς πίστεως
Category: Faith

1 Thessalonians 1:3. काम mandatory; कर्म forbidden, extending the baseline works_of_the_law prohibition — कर्म would import a merit-accumulation cosmology in which faith’s fruit becomes a ledger of deserved outcomes rather than faith’s natural, non-meritorious expression.

Affliction

Approved rendering: क्लेश
Transliteration: kleśa
Doctrine: Suffering, Affliction, and Persecution
Original: θλῖψις
Category: Church

1 Thessalonians 1:6; 3:3-7. Established BSI Bible rendering (cf. Romans 5:3) but also a major technical term in Patañjali’s Yoga philosophy (the five root kleśas removed through disciplined self-effort toward liberation). A translator note distinguishing externally-endured suffering met by God’s comfort (biblical θλῖψις) from an internal obstacle overcome by one’s own practice (yogic kleśa) is recommended for teaching contexts; the established term itself may be retained.

Deliverer Rescuer

Approved rendering: बचानेवाला / छुड़ानेवाला
Transliteration: bacānevālā / chuṛānevālā
Doctrine: The Wrath of God and Coming Judgment
Original: ῥύομαι (τὸν ῥυόμενον ἡμᾶς)
Category: Salvation

1 Thessalonians 1:10 (Jesus who delivers us from the coming wrath). Must convey a one-time, historical, personal rescue from a specific future judgment, not a repeated cycle of karmic rescue-and-return within saṃsāra.

Error Deceit

Approved rendering: भ्रम, धोखा
Transliteration: bhrama, dhokhā
Doctrine: Gospel Integrity and Apostolic Ministry
Original: πλάνη, δόλος
Category: Gospel

1 Thessalonians 2:3. Motives Paul explicitly denies. Relevant to India’s pluralist religious environment; must not blur Paul’s defense of the gospel’s exclusive, objective integrity into mere ‘sincerity.‘

Crown Of Boasting

Approved rendering: आनन्द या घमण्ड का मुकुट
Transliteration: ānanda yā ghamaṇḍa kā mukuṭa
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: στέφανος καυχήσεως
Category: Church

1 Thessalonians 2:19. Paul’s anticipated joy presenting his converts to Christ at the Parousia, described as a victor’s wreath. If घमण्ड (the baseline boasting term, excluded from justification at Romans 3:27) is reused here without a clarifying note, learners moving between curricula may wrongly infer a contradiction. A translator note distinguishing this positive relational joy-in-spiritual-fruit from self-justifying works-boasting is required.

Will Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की इच्छा
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī icchā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: God

1 Thessalonians 4:3. Sanctification is God’s explicit, stated will, not optional or merely aspirational; the directive force must be retained.

Sexual Immorality

Approved rendering: व्यभिचार
Transliteration: vyabhicāra
Doctrine: Personal Holiness and Sexual Purity
Original: πορνεία
Category: Sin

1 Thessalonians 4:3. Established term; must not be softened or generalized into vague ‘impurity’ only — a direct, unsoftened prohibition.

Vessel Body

Approved rendering: पात्र / अपनी देह
Transliteration: pātra / apanī deha
Doctrine: Personal Holiness and Sexual Purity
Original: σκεῦος
Category: Sanctification

1 Thessalonians 4:4. Genuine Pauline interpretive ambiguity (own body vs. wife). Flag for combined native speaker/theologian review; the chosen rendering should not resolve the ambiguity more definitively than the Greek does.

Passion Lust

Approved rendering: अभिलाषा
Transliteration: abhilāṣā
Doctrine: Personal Holiness and Sexual Purity
Original: ἐπιθυμία
Category: Sin

1 Thessalonians 4:5. Consistent with the baseline flesh entry’s phrase शरीर की अभिलाषाएँ where the fuller construction applies.

Gentiles Who Do Not Know God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर को न जाननेवाली अन्यजातियाँ
Transliteration: Parameśvara ko na jānanevālī anyajātiyāṅ
Doctrine: Personal Holiness and Sexual Purity
Original: τὰ ἔθνη τὰ μὴ εἰδότα τὸν θεόν
Category: Church

1 Thessalonians 4:5. अन्यजाति reused exactly from the baseline gentiles entry with an added qualifier distinguishing believing conduct from surrounding pagan sexual ethics.

Impurity

Approved rendering: अशुद्धता
Transliteration: aśuddhatā
Doctrine: Personal Holiness and Sexual Purity
Original: ἀκαθαρσία
Category: Sin

1 Thessalonians 4:7 (‘God has not called us for impurity but for sanctification’). Used here in a moral, not ritual, sense, distinct from the baseline sin entry’s ritual-impurity register. A clarifying note is needed so readers do not import a purely ritual-purity (shuddhi) understanding into this ethical, relational holiness contrast.

Word Of The Lord

Approved rendering: प्रभु के वचन के अनुसार
Transliteration: Prabhu ke vacana ke anusāra
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: λόγος κυρίου (ἐν λόγῳ κυρίου)
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:15. A specific authoritative revelation, not Paul’s private opinion; must not be softened into ‘in my opinion’ or ‘as I understand it.‘

Will Not Precede

Approved rendering: आगे नहीं जायेंगे
Transliteration: āge nahīṅ jāyeṅge
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Original: οὐ μὴ φθάσωμεν
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:15. Emphatic double negative directly answering pastoral anxiety; the pastoral comfort-function must be preserved, not flattened.

Cry Of Command

Approved rendering: आज्ञा की पुकार
Transliteration: ājñā kī pukāra
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: κέλευσμα
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:16. Depicts Christ’s return with royal/military authority, not a quiet mystical event.

Voice Of Archangel

Approved rendering: प्रधान स्वर्गदूत का शब्द
Transliteration: pradhāna svargadūta kā śabda
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: φωνὴ ἀρχαγγέλου
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:16. प्रधान स्वर्गदूत must remain unambiguously a created angelic being subordinate to God, guarding against any devatā/demigod reading.

Trumpet Of God

Approved rendering: परमेश्वर की तुरही
Transliteration: Parameśvara kī turahī
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: σάλπιγξ θεοῦ
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 4:16. Signals the definitive, unmistakable, public nature of Christ’s return; ensure it is not read as a merely symbolic or inward ‘call.‘

Encourage Comfort One Another

Approved rendering: एक दूसरे को प्रोत्साहित करो
Transliteration: eka dūsare ko protsāhita karo
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους
Category: Church

1 Thessalonians 4:18. Reused from the baseline exhort family; leans toward comforting consolation-in-grief sense here rather than motivational encouragement.

Peace And Security False

Approved rendering: शांति और सुरक्षा
Transliteration: śānti aur surakṣā
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια
Category: Eschatology

1 Thessalonians 5:3. शांति is reused from the baseline peace entry but here describes a FALSE, ironic security (likely echoing Roman imperial Pax Romana propaganda), not the baseline’s genuine ‘peace with God.’ Context (reported-speech framing) must make the irony unmistakable so as not to contradict the baseline’s positive शांति entry elsewhere.

Sons Of Light

Approved rendering: ज्योति की सन्तान
Transliteration: jyoti kī santāna
Doctrine: Watchfulness and Readiness for the Day
Original: υἱοὶ φωτός / υἱοὶ ἡμέρας
Category: Sanctification

1 Thessalonians 5:5. Consistent with the baseline armor_of_light and glory entries’ caution against extending light-metaphors toward Hindu divine-light/inner-light concepts (ātman as inner light, jyoti as a symbol of the divine spark within). Must remain a moral-eschatological identity marker, not a metaphysical claim about indwelling divine light.

Quench The Spirit

Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा को न बुझाओ
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā ko na bujhāo
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Life
Original: σβέννυμι τὸ πνεῦμα
Category: God

1 Thessalonians 5:19. Must be read as resisting/suppressing a personal divine Person’s active work (including prophecy, v.20), not extinguishing an impersonal life-force (प्राण) or spiritual energy.

Holy Kiss

Approved rendering: पवित्र चूमकर नमस्कार
Transliteration: pavitra cumakara namaskāra
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Original: φίλημα ἅγιον
Category: Church

1 Thessalonians 5:26. A customary greeting gesture expressing family-like affection. Flag for native speaker review: the physical kiss-greeting may need culturally adapted phrasing (e.g., a warm embrace or holy greeting) for contemporary Indian social contexts while preserving the underlying affectionate, familial meaning — a cultural-adaptation, not doctrinal, concern.

Low Risk Terms

Thanksgiving

Approved rendering: धन्यवाद
Transliteration: dhanyavāda
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία / εὐχαριστοῦμεν
Category: Church

Standard term. Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 1:2; 5:18. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Fellowship

Approved rendering: संगति
Transliteration: saṃgati
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: दोस्ती, भाईचारा

Shared participation in Christ. Relevant to the general communal register of 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 5:11-15. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Exhort

Approved rendering: प्रोत्साहित करना
Transliteration: protsāhita karanā
Doctrine: Mutual Edification

Context-sensitive: entreaty vs. encouragement. In 1 Thessalonians 4:18 leans toward comforting consolation-in-grief — see encourage_comfort_one_another entry below. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Boasting

Approved rendering: घमण्ड
Transliteration: ghamaṇḍa
Doctrine: Justification by Faith

Negative works-boasting excluded from justification (Romans 3:27). 1 Thessalonians 2:19’s ‘crown of boasting/rejoicing’ reuses this root in a POSITIVE relational sense — see crown_of_boasting entry below, which requires a disambiguating translator note so the two uses are not read as contradictory. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Amen

Approved rendering: आमीन
Transliteration: āmīna
Doctrine: Worship

Transliterated per the Language Package’s established standard. Used in closing benedictory material if present in study documents on this letter. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Transliteration: bhaviṣyavāṇī
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: भविष्यफल
Original: προφητεία
Category: Church

Occurs at 1 Thessalonians 5:20 (‘do not despise prophecies’). God-inspired declaration; distinct from astrological prediction. (Inherited from Romans package.)

Labor Of Love

Approved rendering: प्रेम का परिश्रम
Transliteration: prema kā pariśrama
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: κόπος τῆς ἀγάπης
Category: Church

1 Thessalonians 1:3. Costly, exertive love in practical service, not sentiment alone.

Doctrine: Gospel Integrity and Apostolic Ministry
Original: παρρησία
Category: Church

1 Thessalonians 2:2. Confident, open gospel proclamation despite opposition.

Tested Approved

Transliteration: parakhanā
Doctrine: Gospel Integrity and Apostolic Ministry
Original: δοκιμάζω
Category: Church

Approved rendering: शैतान
Transliteration: śaitāna
Doctrine: Suffering, Affliction, and Persecution
Original: Σατανᾶς
Category: Sin

1 Thessalonians 2:18. Established transliteration; identifies a personal spiritual adversary, not an impersonal evil force or karmic obstacle.

Tempter

Approved rendering: परखनेवाला
Transliteration: parakhanevālā
Doctrine: Suffering, Affliction, and Persecution
Original: ὁ πειράζων
Category: Sin

1 Thessalonians 3:5. A title for Satan describing his activity of testing believers toward sin under persecution.

Doctrine: Suffering, Affliction, and Persecution

Approved rendering: स्थिर करना
Transliteration: sthira karanā
Doctrine: Suffering, Affliction, and Persecution
Original: στηρίξαι
Category: Faith

1 Thessalonians 3:13. God’s own action of firming up believers’ hearts; divine, not self-generated, stability.

Abound Increase

Approved rendering: बढ़ते जाना
Transliteration: baṛhate jānā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: περισσεύειν
Category: Sanctification

1 Thessalonians 4:1,10. Sanctification as ongoing growth, not a static achievement or one-time ritual purification.
