Executive Summary

Executive Summary — Ruth Language Package (English → Hindi)

Why it matters

The Book of Ruth is a four-chapter narrative carrying six interlocking doctrines — hesed, the kinsman-redeemer, God’s ordinary-life providence, Gentile inclusion, loyalty/faithfulness, and the genealogy to David and Christ — into a Hindi cultural environment uniquely equipped, and uniquely at risk, to misread every one of them. Ruth’s core passage (1:16–17) is this curriculum’s theological anchor, but doctrinal weight is distributed across the whole book, peaking again at the Providence hinge-verse (2:3) and the closing genealogy (4:18–22). This package extends, and never contradicts, the baseline Romans/Galatians Language Package while solving problems that baseline never had to face: an Old Testament Hebrew Vorlage, ~17 occurrences of the divine Tetragrammaton, and a narrative technique that hides its theology inside ordinary words like “happened” and “kindness.”

Key findings

  • 5 new Critical-risk terms required coinage or dedicated new entries beyond the baseline: lord_yhwh (यहोवा, distinct from baseline प्रभु), hesed (करुणा-प्रेम, coined), happened_chance_providence (periphrastic, never भाग्य/नियति/किस्मत), kinsman_redeemer_goel (कुटुम्बी छुटकारा देनेवाला, coined), and genealogy (वंशावली, extending the baseline’s already-Critical Davidic/Messianic doctrines).
  • 10 new High-risk terms were identified (people, moab_moabite, almighty_shaddai, favor_chen, wings_covering, uncover_the_feet, kinsman_near_relative, redeem_verb, name_inheritance_perpetuated, blessed_be_the_lord) — 15 new Critical+High terms total, against 23 inherited baseline terms reused exactly.
  • 6 of 7 registry doctrines require mandatory human theologian review (5 Critical, 1 High); only “Loyalty and Faithfulness” is Medium-risk, and even it carries a mandatory theologian spot-review requirement for the 1:17 oath formula. Zero doctrines are automated-only.
  • The single highest operational risk in the entire book is Ruth 2:3’s “she happened to come” — the natural, unmarked Hindi vocabulary for this phrase (भाग्य/नियति/किस्मत) is exactly the vocabulary three separate baseline doctrine rules already forbid.
  • Ruth also surfaces a genuine internal tension the baseline never had to resolve: सर्वशक्तिमान (the established title for “Almighty”/Shaddai) contains the शक्ति root the baseline forbids elsewhere for God’s power — resolved as a single documented, fenced exception, not a precedent.

Risks

  • Providence → karma/fate collapse (Critical): “By chance” language at 2:3, 2:20, and 4:14 is the book’s highest-probability failure point; a single unflagged bare gloss would invert the Providence doctrine into karma-adjacent fatalism at the narrative’s structural hinge.
  • Hesed → salvific-grace or bhakti-merit collapse (Critical): Four competing Hindi terms (अनुग्रह, दया, कृपा, करुणा-प्रेम) occupy one crowded semantic neighborhood; a translator defaulting to अनुग्रह for any “kindness” moment would silently re-import salvation doctrine into human-relational scenes throughout all four chapters.
  • Kinsman-Redeemer → moksha/avatar collapse (Critical): मुक्तिदाता or a bare commercial “buyer” rendering would either import liberation-from-samsara theology or strip out the covenant-kinship obligation that makes Boaz’s act typologically anticipate Christ.
  • Divine Name confusion (Critical): Conflating यहोवा (Ruth’s ~17 Tetragrammaton occurrences) with the baseline’s प्रभु (reserved for the NT Lordship confession) would blur two distinct theological categories precisely where Ruth’s oath (1:17) depends on the distinction being clear.
  • Gentile-inclusion erasure (High): Softening or dropping the “Moabite” ethnic label at any later occurrence — especially at 4:5,10, the point of highest social stakes — would erase the very tension the book exists to resolve.
  • Honor/shame mishandling (High): The threshing-floor scene and the “uncover the feet” euphemism (3:4,7,14) risk a scandalous misreading in Hindi if rendered without the narrator’s own discretionary framing (3:14).

Opportunities

  • Ruth is a uniquely strong pedagogical bridge for Hindi/Hindu-background learners: its Gentile-inclusion and genealogy doctrines directly and constructively subvert caste/bloodline-purity assumptions, offering a positive teaching moment rather than merely a risk to manage.
  • The coined terms करुणा-प्रेम and कुटुम्बी छुटकारा देनेवाला, once fenced and glossed, give this curriculum permanently reusable, doctrinally precise vocabulary for hesed and kinsman-redemption in any future OT-narrative curriculum in this pipeline.
  • Ruth 1:16-17’s confession structurally parallels Romans 10:9’s “Jesus is Lord” — an opportunity for cross-curriculum teaching material linking the two testaments’ confession patterns using already-consistent vocabulary.
  1. Load assets/translation_memory.json (Ruth v1, 58 terms) and both registries before any Phase 2 segment translation begins; treat the 5 Critical and 10 High new terms as automatic theologian-review triggers per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
  2. Enforce the periphrastic providence rendering and the automated rejection of bare भाग्य/नियति/किस्मत/संयोग at every occurrence of the “happened” idiom — this is the single highest-priority automated validation rule in the package.
  3. Route the entire threshing-floor scene (3:1-15) to combined native-speaker and theologian review before acceptance.
  4. Track यहोवा usage and मोआब/मोआबिन retention as dedicated, book-spanning consistency logs shared across all Phase 2 workers, not per-segment spot checks.
  5. Carry all 6 theologian-review doctrines and 15 Critical/High terms forward into Phase 2 Step 17’s Doctrinal Fidelity Review with this document’s counts as the baseline expectation.
