Executive Summary
Executive Summary — Colossians Hindi Language Package (Phase 1)
Why it matters
Colossians packs the curriculum’s densest concentration of Hindu-tradition collision risk into four short chapters. Its core passage (1:15-20) makes the highest Christological claims in the New Testament outside John 1, and its anti-syncretism polemic (2:8-23) confronts a false teaching that combined philosophy, ritual calendar, angel-veneration, and ascetic self-discipline — a combination that maps onto live Hindu devotional and ascetic practice with unusual precision. Getting this book wrong in Hindi doesn’t just blur a doctrine; it can turn Paul’s central claim (Christ alone is sufficient — nothing else is needed) into its opposite (Christ is one more path among many, or one more deity in a hierarchy).
Key findings
- 20 doctrines identified, full-book coverage (chapters 1–4), anchored by the core passage but never limited to it. 10 are Critical, 7 High, 2 Medium, 1 Low.
- 113 enforced terms now sit in
translation_memory.jsonv4: 50 inherited unchanged from the Romans/Galatians baseline (v3), plus 63 new Colossians terms (16 Critical, 23 High, 18 Medium, 6 Low). - One new permanently forbidden substitution: देवत्व (for “deity/fullness of deity,” Colossians 2:9) joins मुक्ति, मोक्ष, अवतार, and पुनर्जन्म on the never-use list — देवत्व implies an attainable, plural Hindu godhood status that would quietly convert Christ’s unique, eternal deity into one more avatar-descent.
- One deliberate exception to standing practice: पूजा (normally forbidden for Christian “worship”) is used exactly once, at “worship of angels” (2:18), because the condemned practice is genuinely analogous to Hindu devotional veneration of intermediary beings — a documented, reasoned departure, not an oversight.
- The single highest-stakes verse-pair in either curriculum to date is Colossians 2:9-10 (fullness of deity dwelling bodily in Christ), where three separate collision risks (θεότης, πλήρωμα, σωματικῶς) stack in two verses.
Risks
- 39 new Critical/High terms require mandatory theologian review on every occurrence, on top of the 44 Critical/High terms already carried forward from the Romans/Galatians baseline.
- 17 of 20 doctrines route to human theologian review; only 2 route to native-speaker-only review and 1 to automated review — the heaviest theologian-review load of any book processed so far in this Language Package.
- The old-self/new-self clothing metaphor (3:9-10) has no available lexical mitigation: it is structurally identical to Bhagavad Gita 2:22’s reincarnation simile, and Paul’s own imagery must be kept, so the only safeguard is a mandatory translator note on every occurrence.
- The household code’s slave/master section (3:22-4:1) is elevated from Medium (Galatians baseline) to Critical specifically for Hindi/Indian application, given the risk of being misheard as sanctifying caste-based servitude or bonded labor — a risk absent from the letter’s original Greco-Roman setting.
- Existing Hindi Bible translations are largely sound at the text level, but two identified traditions — the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Hindi New World Translation (inserting “other” into Colossians 1:16-17) and Vedantic/ashram-tradition inculturation paraphrases (recasting 1:17/2:9 in ब्रह्म/परमात्मा terms) — must never be echoed.
Opportunities
- Colossians 3:11 and 3:25 (unity in Christ; divine impartiality) give this curriculum unusually direct, textually-grounded material to confront caste-based spiritual hierarchy — an opportunity to teach with force, not merely caution.
- The letter’s sufficiency argument (2:9-10, “you have been filled in him”) offers a natural, respectful bridge into conversations with Hindu-background seekers already asking “what more do I need?” — precisely the question the Colossian heresy exploited and Paul answers directly.
- A first explicit YouVersion version recommendation (
1679/HOV, book codeCOL) is now established for this Language Package, standardizing hyperlink construction for all future Phase 2 output.
Recommended actions
- Lock
translation_memory.jsonv4 as authoritative before any Phase 2 Colossians segment translation begins; do not permit ad hoc rendering of the 63 new terms. - Route Colossians 2 first into theologian-reviewer queues — it carries the highest concentration of Critical syncretism-collision terms in the combined Romans/Galatians/Colossians curriculum and should not wait behind lower-risk chapters.
- Attach mandatory translator notes (not optional footnotes) to every occurrence of: fullness_of_deity/bodily (2:9), certificate_of_debt (2:14), worship_of_angels (2:18), old_self_new_self (3:9-10), buried_and_raised_with_christ (2:12-13,20; 3:1,3), christ_our_life (3:4), filling_up_christs_afflictions (1:24), and slaves_obey_masters (3:22-4:1).
- Confirm the YouVersion
version_id(1679) against the live catalog before hyperlink generation at Phase 2 scale; fall back to the next-closest BSI-lineage listing if unresolvable, never to the ERV/IRV listing. - Brief all reviewers explicitly on the two negative-example translation traditions (JW New World Translation; ashram-tradition Vedantic paraphrase) so reviewers recognize and reject these patterns on sight rather than needing to re-derive the risk from first principles.
