Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — Exodus (English → Hindi)
Methodology Note
Exodus is a Torah/Hebrew Bible book; its original language is Biblical Hebrew (Masoretic Text), not Koine Greek. This analysis therefore cites the Hebrew original (word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range) as the primary layer of analysis. Where a Hebrew term has a fixed Septuagint (LXX) Greek equivalent that is directly picked up by New Testament writers already governed by the baseline Romans/Galatians translation memory (e.g., πάσχα for פֶּסַח, ἱλαστήριον for כַּפֹּרֶת, δοῦλος for עֶבֶד), that Greek form is noted to preserve cross-testament and cross-curriculum consistency. All Hindi renderings that duplicate a term already fixed in translation_memory.json or bible_term_registry.json reuse that rendering exactly; new terms introduced by Exodus are assigned a risk tier using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework and grounded reasoning style as the baseline.
Proper names follow the established forms already fixed in the baseline requirements document: Moses = मूसा, Aaron = हारून, Israel = इस्राएल, Egypt = मिस्र, Pharaoh = फ़िरौन.
PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Exodus 12:1-14
Exodus 12:1
“The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,“
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Hindi rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LORD יהוה YHWH The self-existent covenant Name | God’s personal, revealed, covenant Name (distinct from generic “God”) LORD, Yahweh, Jehovah | The One who identified himself to Moses (Ex 3:14; 6:2-8) now personally speaks the redemption command; this is not a generic deity issuing ritual instructions but Israel’s covenant Redeemer. | यहोवा | Critical — established BSI OV transliteration for the Tetragrammaton. Rendering YHWH merely as प्रभु (a title, “Lord/master”) would erase the point of Ex 3 and 6 — that God has revealed a personal covenant Name, not just a rank. Must be kept lexically distinct from परमेश्वर (generic Elohim/theos, baseline). |
| land אֶרֶץ erets ground, territory, country | physical land; can extend to “earth” generally land, country, earth | Egypt as the specific place of bondage from which redemption occurs — geography is historical, not allegorical. | देश / भूमि | Low |
| Egypt מִצְרַיִם Mitsrayim (proper name) | the nation/land of Egypt Egypt | The house of bondage; recurring theological shorthand for slavery to sin in later biblical theology. | मिस्र | Low — established proper name. |
Exodus 12:2
“This month shall be for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| month חֹדֶשׁ chodesh new moon, lunar month | calendrical month, tied to new-moon observation month, new moon | God resets Israel’s calendar around the redemption event — redemption becomes the reference point of time itself. | महीना | Low |
| beginning/first רֹאשׁ rosh head, beginning, chief | first in sequence, primacy beginning, head, first | Redemption inaugurates a new reckoning of history for the redeemed people. | पहला / आरम्भ | Low |
Exodus 12:3
“Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man must take a lamb for his family, one for each household.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| congregation עֵדָה edah assembly, gathered community | the corporate covenant people as a summoned body congregation, community, assembly | Passover is not a private rite but a corporate covenant act — the whole people participates as one body, prefiguring corporate church identity (baseline “church” doctrine). | सारी मण्डली / सारी सभा | Medium — must not be rendered so generically that it loses the sense of a covenant-bound assembly (distinct from a crowd). |
| lamb שֶׂה seh a young sheep or goat | small flock animal, either species lamb, sheep, kid | The substitute whose life and blood stand in the place of the household’s firstborn — direct typological ancestor of “Lamb of God” (Jn 1:29). | मेम्ना | Critical — established Hindi Christian term for the sacrificial/paschal lamb; must not be rendered generically as “जानवर” (animal), which would erase the substitutionary-typological force carried into the NT. |
| household בֵּית אָב(וֹת) beit av(ot) father’s house | family unit, extended household household, family | The lamb’s protection extends corporately to every member of the house under its blood — a pattern of household salvation later echoed (Acts 16:31). | घराना | Low — consistent with baseline “household_of_faith” family of terms. |
Exodus 12:4
“If a household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with a neighbor, in proportion to what each person will eat.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| neighbor שָׁכֵן shaken one dwelling near | nearby household/person neighbor | Community mutual provision under the same covenant sign. | पड़ोसी | Low |
Exodus 12:5
“The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from either the sheep or the goats.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| without defect תָּמִים tamim complete, whole, unblemished | physical soundness; moral integrity/blamelessness elsewhere (e.g., Gen 17:1) without blemish, perfect, unblemished | The lamb’s physical perfection typifies the moral sinlessness required of the ultimate substitute (1 Peter 1:19, “a lamb without blemish or spot”). | निर्दोष / निष्कलंक | High — must retain the typological weight; a rendering conveying only “healthy” or “good quality” would flatten the theological point that God requires and provides a perfect substitute, not simply a valuable one. Gloss required on first occurrence. |
| male זָכָר zachar male (as opposed to female) | grammatical/biological male male | Consistent with the wider sacrificial system’s specifications; no independent doctrinal weight beyond ritual precision. | नर | Low |
| sheep / goat כֶּבֶשׂ / עֵז keves / ez sheep / goat | either acceptable species lamb, sheep / goat, kid | Provision is generous, not narrowly restrictive — God accommodates household means. | भेड़ / बकरी | Low |
Exodus 12:6
“Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when the whole community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| keep/watch over שָׁמַר shamar guard, keep, watch, observe | protective custody; also “keep a command/covenant” elsewhere keep, watch, tend | Four days of watchful care over the substitute lamb — deliberate, unhurried preparation for a costly, appointed sacrifice, not an improvised act. | रखना / निगरानी करना | Low |
| twilight בֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִם beyn ha’arbayim ”between the two evenings” | the dusk period before full nightfall at twilight, in the evening | The precise, God-appointed hour underscores that the event is under divine ordering, not human timing. | सांझ के समय | Low |
| slaughter שָׁחַט shachat to slay ritually, cut the throat | the technical act of sacrificial killing kill, slaughter, sacrifice | The lamb’s death is the necessary, God-commanded means by which the household is spared — substitution requires an actual death. | बलि करना / मारना | High — the term must not be softened into a bloodless “offering” that obscures the substitutionary death itself; see also “sacrifice/offering” entry below. |
Exodus 12:7
“They are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| blood דָּם dam blood | life-force; sacrificial/covenantal blood; kinship blood blood | The visible, applied evidence of a death that has already occurred in the household’s place — this is the doctrinal center of Passover typology and of substitutionary atonement generally (cf. Ex 24:8; Heb 9:22). | लहू | Critical — लहू (not the generic/medical रक्त) is the established Hindi Bible register for sacrificial/covenantal blood. Risk: a reader could misread the doorpost-blood rite through a folk-ritual lens of appeasing a hostile power with blood (a live category in Indian folk religion); the text must be handled so it is clear this is a sign God himself institutes and interprets (v.13), not a human ritual manipulating the divine — the direction of provision is from God to the household, not the reverse. |
| doorframe (doorpost/lintel) מְזוּזָה / מַשְׁקוֹף mezuzah / mashqoph doorpost / lintel (crossbeam) | architectural terms for a house’s entry frame doorposts, lintel, doorframe | The blood marks the boundary of the house under God’s protection — a visible covenant sign at the threshold between judgment and safety. | द्वार की चौकी / ऊपरी बाड़ | Low-Medium — technical architectural vocabulary; ensure natural Hindi phrasing. |
Exodus 12:8
“That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| roasted with fire צָלִי־אֵשׁ tsli-esh fire-roasted | manner of preparation, direct fire exposure (not boiling) roasted over the fire | The specific manner of preparation is itself commanded, underscoring the meal’s ritual, not merely culinary, character. | आग पर भूना हुआ | Low |
| bitter herbs מְרֹרִים merorim bitter plants | bitter-tasting herbs eaten with the meal bitter herbs | A commemorative, sensory reminder of the bitterness of Egyptian bondage — memory embedded in the body, not merely the mind. | कड़वी सागपात | Low |
| unleavened bread מַצָּה matzah bread without yeast | flat, unfermented bread unleavened bread | Haste and purity: no time for leaven to work, and leaven later becomes a NT symbol of corrupting sin (1 Cor 5:6-8). | अखमीरी रोटी | Medium — established term; flag for the symbolic (leaven=corruption) resonance carried into the NT so translator notes can anticipate later curricula. |
Exodus 12:9
“Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire — head, legs and internal organs.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| raw נָא na uncooked | raw meat raw | Excludes improper, careless handling of the sacrificial animal. | कच्चा | Low |
| boiled in water בָּשֵׁל בַּמַּיִם bashel bamayim cooked in water | boiling as a method boiled | The contrast method is forbidden — the whole animal must be treated by the one prescribed method, underscoring precise obedience to a specific divine command rather than personal preference. | पानी में उबाला हुआ | Low |
Exodus 12:10
“Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| burn שָׂרַף saraph to burn, consume by fire | destruction by fire; sometimes purificatory burn | Complete disposal — nothing of the substitute is treated carelessly or left to decay; the whole provision is consumed or wholly destroyed, not partially wasted. | जला देना | Low |
Exodus 12:11
“This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the LORD’s Passover.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| in haste חִפָּזוֹן chippazon hurriedly, in trepidation/urgency | urgent readiness to move in haste, hurriedly | Israel eats as a people already being delivered, poised for immediate departure — redemption is imminent and certain, not a distant hope. | उतावली से / फुर्ती से | Low-Medium |
| Passover פֶּסַח pesach a passing-over/protective skipping-over | (1) the historical night-event; (2) the perpetual annual feast; (3) the sacrificial lamb itself Passover, Pesach | The event, the feast, and the lamb are all named by this one root — the term binds substitutionary death, deliverance, and ongoing memorial into a single theological reality later applied to Christ (1 Cor 5:7, “Christ our Passover lamb”). | फसह | Critical — established transliterated term in the Hindi Bible tradition; must never be replaced with a generic word for “festival” (उत्सव/पर्व alone), which would sever the specific historical-redemptive, substitutionary content from the term. |
Exodus 12:12
“On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn… and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| pass through עָבַר avar to cross, pass through | general movement across/through a region pass through, go through | God himself, not an intermediary force, moves through the land in judgment — this verb (avar) is etymologically related to, yet distinct in nuance from, pasach (v.13, “pass over” protectively); the wordplay contrasts universal judgment with particular deliverance. | बीच से गुज़रना | Medium — flag the avar/pasach wordplay for translator note so the Hindi does not accidentally use one verb for both nuances. |
| strike נָכָה nakah to strike, smite, kill | a blow ranging from injury to fatal striking strike down, smite, kill | The judgment is a real, decisive act of the personal God against Egypt’s firstborn — not an impersonal plague operating automatically. | मार डालना | High — must retain personal divine agency; avoid a passive construction that could read as an impersonal calamity. |
| firstborn בְּכוֹר bekhor first male offspring | eldest son (or animal); bears special status/rights (inheritance, consecration) firstborn | The firstborn represents the whole household’s life and future; its death (or ransom by the lamb) is the pivot of the entire chapter, later echoed in the consecration-of-the-firstborn law (Ex 13:1-2) and, typologically, in Christ as “firstborn from the dead” (Col 1:18). | पहलौठा | High — established Hindi Bible term; ensure consistency with Ex 13, Ex 34:19-20, and NT firstborn-of-Christ typology across future curricula. |
| judgment מִשְׁפָּט mishpat judicial verdict, justice, ordinance | legal/judicial decision; can mean “custom, manner” in some contexts judgment(s), justice | God’s acts against Egypt’s gods are judicial, not arbitrary — a legal reckoning against false claims to deity. | दण्ड / न्याय | Medium |
| gods of Egypt אֱלֹהֵי מִצְרַיִם elohei Mitsrayim the gods/deities of Egypt | Egypt’s pantheon (Ra, Hapi, etc.) gods of Egypt | The plagues and the final judgment are framed as a direct confrontation and defeat of rival deities by the one true God — directly relevant to the Indian context’s living polytheism. | मिस्र के देवता | High — must render एलोहिम here as देवता (false/created gods), never using परमेश्वर, to keep the singular true God (यहोवा/परमेश्वर) categorically distinct from the defeated false gods; this distinction is the theological point of the verse. |
| I am the LORD אֲנִי יהוה ani YHWH ”I am YHWH” | self-identification formula, recurring as the refrain of Exodus I am the LORD | The self-naming formula anchoring the entire book (see Ex 3:14; 6:2-8) — every judgment and deliverance act is authenticated by the speaker’s own identity. | मैं यहोवा हूँ | Critical — tie directly to the यहोवा entry; must never be diluted to a generic “I am God” that loses the covenant-Name self-disclosure. |
Exodus 12:13
“The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I strike Egypt, no plague will touch you.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sign אוֹת ot mark, token, sign | a visible marker of covenant reality (also of the rainbow, Sabbath, circumcision elsewhere) sign, mark, token | The blood functions as a divinely-appointed, divinely-interpreted marker — its efficacy rests entirely on God’s own promise attached to it, not on any inherent ritual power of blood itself. | चिन्ह | High — must not be rendered so as to suggest a magical or omen-like token (शगुन); it is a covenant sign whose meaning and power are assigned by God’s own word. |
| pass over פָּסַח pasach to pass over, skip over (protectively) | protective skipping-over, sparing pass over, spare | The root that gives Passover its name; distinct in nuance from avar (v.12) — God does not merely “go past” but actively, personally spares. | लांघ जाना / बचा लेना | Critical — the avar/pasach distinction from v.12 must be preserved in the Hindi so readers can perceive that the same God who judges is the one who personally, purposefully spares those under the sign of blood. |
| plague נֶגֶף negeph a blow, plague, striking | a destructive stroke, often divinely sent plague, destructive blow | The specific instrument of the tenth plague — death of the firstborn — from which the marked houses are exempted. | विपत्ति / महामारी | Low-Medium |
Exodus 12:14
“This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD — a lasting ordinance.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| memorial זִכָּרוֹן zikkaron remembrance, memorial | an appointed reminder built into ritual/calendar memorial, remembrance | Redemption is to be actively, ritually remembered across generations — not merely recorded as past history but re-enacted as living identity. | स्मरण / स्मारक | Medium |
| festival חַג chag pilgrim feast, festival | one of Israel’s appointed annual feasts feast, festival | Passover joins the calendar of Israel’s fixed worship-festivals — celebration, not somber commemoration alone. | पर्व / उत्सव | Low-Medium |
| lasting ordinance חֻקַּת עוֹלָם chuqqat olam a statute forever/perpetual | permanent, binding, generational statute perpetual ordinance, lasting statute, forever ordinance | The Passover’s obligation is perpetual, extending the redemption event’s authority into every future generation of the covenant people. | सदा का विधान / सदा की विधि | Medium |
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study, Exodus 1-40
Chapter 1 — Israel Oppressed in Egypt
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| affliction/hard labor עִנּוּי / סִבְלוֹת (inui / sivlot) oppression, forced burdens | affliction, oppression, hard labor | Establishes bondage as the condition from which redemption (ch. 12) delivers; the historical, social reality behind later “deliverance from bondage to sin” typology. | दासत्व का दुःख / भारी बोझ | Medium |
| fear God (midwives) יָרְא אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים (yare et-ha’elohim) to revere/stand in awe of God | fear God, feared God | The Hebrew midwives’ refusal to kill Israelite infants, rooted in reverence for God rather than fear of Pharaoh — the first instance in Exodus of “fear of the LORD” as moral courage, not terror. | परमेश्वर का भय मानना | High — foundational to the “Holiness and Fear of the Lord” doctrine; must convey reverent moral allegiance, not mere fright. |
| multiply/be fruitful רָבָה / פָּרָה (ravah / parah) increase, be fruitful | multiply, increase greatly | Echoes the Genesis creation/Abrahamic-covenant blessing language; God’s covenant promise advancing even under oppression. | बढ़ना / फलना | Low |
Chapter 2 — Birth and Flight of Moses
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| God remembered his covenant זָכַר אֶת־בְּרִיתוֹ (zakhar et-berito) to remember, call to mind and act upon | remembered his covenant | God’s “remembering” is not mere recollection but covenant-triggered action — the hinge moving the narrative from oppression toward deliverance. | अपनी वाचा को स्मरण करना | High — ties directly to वाचा (baseline covenant term, reused exactly); must convey active, faithfulness-driven remembrance, not passive memory. |
| groaning/cry נְאָקָה / צְעָקָה (ne’aqah / tse’aqah) groan, outcry | groaning, crying out | Israel’s inarticulate suffering itself reaches God and moves him to act — suffering under bondage is heard by a personal God, not absorbed into an impersonal cosmic order. | कराहना / दोहाई देना | Medium |
Chapter 3 — The Burning Bush and the Divine Name
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| burning bush סְנֶה (seneh) thornbush | bush, burning bush | The vehicle of theophany — ordinary matter made the site of holy encounter, without being consumed. | झाड़ी | Low |
| holy ground אַדְמַת־קֹדֶשׁ (admat qodesh) holy/set-apart ground | holy ground | God’s presence sanctifies space; ties directly to the baseline “holy” (पवित्र) entry and to Exodus’s larger tabernacle-presence theology. | पवित्र भूमि | Medium |
| I AM WHO I AM אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה (ehyeh asher ehyeh) “I will be/am who I will be/am” | I AM WHO I AM, I AM THAT I AM | God’s self-existent, self-defining, covenant-faithful character — he is not named by another but names himself, and his name promises ongoing faithful presence (“I will be with you,” v.12). | मैं हूँ जो मैं हूँ | Critical — the highest-risk term in Exodus for the Hindi/Hindu-background reader. Popular Vedantic philosophy uses similar-sounding “I am” (अहं ब्रह्मास्मि, “I am Brahman”) formulas to assert impersonal identity between the self and an undifferentiated ultimate reality. Exodus 3:14 must be rendered and glossed so that “I AM” names a personal, self-existent, covenant-making Subject who addresses Moses as a distinct other, not a philosophical statement of non-dual being. Mandatory theologian review with translator note on every occurrence. |
| YHWH יהוה the covenant Name (Ex 3:15) | LORD, Yahweh | See core-passage entry above; first formal revelation of the Name occurs here. | यहोवा | Critical (see above). |
| remove your sandals שַׁל־נְעָלֶיךָ take off shoes | take off your sandals | A concrete act of reverence marking the boundary between common and holy space — an early instance of the “fear of the LORD” doctrine in embodied practice. | अपने जूते उतार लो | Medium |
Chapter 4 — Moses’ Signs and Aaron’s Call
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sign אוֹת (ot) see core-passage entry | sign, miraculous sign | God authenticates his messenger with signs that the people themselves will recognize as divine confirmation, not human trickery. | चिन्ह | High (see 12:13 entry; consistent usage required from first occurrence). |
| let my people go שַׁלַּח (shalach) send away, release, let go | let go, send | The recurring covenant-liberation refrain running through chs. 4-11; God’s demand, not a request Pharaoh may refuse without consequence. | जाने दे / छोड़ दे | High — this refrain must remain consistent in wording across chapters 5, 7-10 so its cumulative rhetorical force (God’s repeated, escalating demand) is visible to the Hindi reader. |
| harden his heart (God’s stated intent) חִזֵּק אֶת־לְבָבוֹ (chizzeq et-levavo) to make strong/firm the heart | harden, strengthen | The first occurrence of the hardening motif, spoken as God’s own foreknowing intent (v.21) before the later narrative shows Pharaoh hardening his own heart — the two strands (divine sovereignty and human responsibility) run together through the plague narrative and must not be collapsed into one. | उसका मन कठोर करना | High — flag for theologian review; see fuller treatment at ch. 7-10. |
Chapter 5 — Increased Bondage and Pharaoh’s Defiance
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ”Who is the LORD, that I should obey him?” מִי יהוה (mi YHWH) “Who is YHWH?” | Who is the LORD? | Pharaoh’s defiant denial of YHWH’s authority — the narrative’s central conflict: the true God’s claim versus a rival human/divine claimant (Pharaoh as a semi-divine king in Egyptian theology). | यहोवा कौन है, कि मैं उसकी सुनूँ? | High — must retain the force of open, personal defiance against the named covenant God, not a generic rhetorical question. |
| taskmasters נֹגְשִׂים (nogesim) slave-drivers, oppressors | taskmasters, slave drivers | Intensified bondage under human agents of oppression — narrative background reinforcing the “deliverance from bondage” doctrine. | दास-अधिकारी | Low |
Chapter 6 — The Covenant Name Reaffirmed; Redemption Promised
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| El Shaddai אֵל שַׁדַּי God Almighty (patriarchal name) | God Almighty | Contrasted with the fuller covenant-Name revelation now given (v.3) — progressive self-disclosure, not competing deities. | सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वर | Medium |
| redeem גָּאַל (ga’al) to redeem, act as kinsman-redeemer, buy back | redeem, deliver (as next-of-kin) | God’s redemption of Israel “with an outstretched arm” (v.6) is the theological headwater of the whole “Exodus as Redemption” doctrine — a costly, personal rescue by the rightful kinsman-redeemer, not an impersonal liberation. | छुटकारा देना | High — reuse baseline “redemption” (छुटकारा) family exactly; NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष per the baseline’s absolute prohibition, since this is deliverance by a personal covenant God, not escape from an impersonal cycle. |
Chapter 7 — Aaron’s Staff; the Plague of Blood Begins
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| signs and wonders (paired) אֹתוֹת וּמוֹפְתִים (otot u-mophetim) signs and wonders | signs and wonders | The standard pairing describing God’s mighty acts against Egypt — establishes the vocabulary used throughout the plague cycle and echoed in the NT (Acts 2:22; Rom 15:19). | चिन्ह और अद्भुत काम | High — consistent pairing required across chs. 7-11; must not be rendered as generic “miracles” (चमत्कार) alone, losing the “sign” (interpretive, covenant-authenticating) dimension. |
| harden (three distinct roots) חָזַק (chazaq, “be strong/firm”) / כָּבֵד (kaved, “be heavy”) / קָשָׁה (qashah, “be hard/stubborn”) strengthen / make heavy / make hard | harden | Exodus uses three different Hebrew verbs across the plague narrative for Pharaoh’s hardening, sometimes with God as subject, sometimes with Pharaoh as subject of his own heart — a deliberately woven theological tapestry of sovereignty and responsibility that must not be flattened into one Hindi verb throughout, which would erase this literary/theological nuance. | कठोर करना / भारी होना | High — mandatory theologian review; render context-sensitively but flag the recurring motif for consistency tracking across chs. 4, 7-11, 14. |
| blood (plague) דָּם (dam) blood | blood | The first plague turns the Nile — source of Egyptian life and the site of Egyptian nature-deity worship — to blood, foreshadowing the doorpost blood of ch. 12 by contrast: here blood is judgment, there it is the mark of deliverance. | लहू | Critical (see core-passage entry; consistent usage). |
Chapter 8 — Frogs, Gnats, Flies; “The Finger of God”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| magicians חַרְטֻמִּים (chartumim) Egyptian ritual specialists/sorcerer-priests | magicians, sorcerers | Their eventual inability to replicate the plagues (8:18) demonstrates YHWH’s superiority over Egypt’s occult/priestly power structures. | जादूगर | Medium |
| finger of God אֶצְבַּע אֱלֹהִים (etsba elohim) “finger of God” | finger of God | An idiom for direct, effortless divine action — God accomplishes with minimal exertion what Egypt’s most powerful specialists cannot. | परमेश्वर की अंगुली | Medium |
Chapter 9 — Livestock, Boils, Hail; “No One Like Me”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ”that you may know there is no one like me in all the earth” לְמַעַן תֵּדַע כִּי אֵין כָּמֹנִי בְּכׇל־הָאָרֶץ so that you may know | that you may know | Explicit incomparability formula — direct polemic against Egypt’s polytheism, and by extension against any claim of multiple equally-valid divine powers. | कि तुझे मालूम हो जाए कि सारी पृथ्वी पर मेरे तुल्य कोई नहीं | High — must render the incomparability unqualified; softening “no one like me” toward “one of the greatest” would blunt the monotheistic polemic central to the plague narrative and to the Indian pluralist context alike. |
Chapter 10 — Locusts and Darkness
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ”that you may know that I am the LORD” לְמַעַן תֵּדְעוּן כִּי אֲנִי יהוה that you may know I am YHWH | that you may know I am the LORD | Recurring refrain (also 6:7; 7:17; 8:22; 14:4,18) tying every mighty act back to the Name-revelation of ch. 3 and 6 — the plagues are theophany, not mere disaster. | कि तुम जान लो कि मैं यहोवा हूँ | Critical — reuse यहोवा rendering exactly; keep refrain wording consistent across all occurrences. |
Chapter 11 — The Final Plague Announced
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| favor חֵן (chen) favor, grace, goodwill | favor, grace | Egyptians show the Israelites favor (11:3) — here a horizontal, human goodwill rather than the vertical unmerited-favor sense; context-sensitive twin of the grace doctrine developed further at Ex 33-34. | कृपा | Medium — use कृपा (per baseline’s permitted non-grace-contrast usage) here; reserve अनुग्रह for the unmerited-standing-before-God sense that surfaces at Ex 33:12-17 and 34:6-7. |
Chapter 12 — Passover Instituted; the Exodus Begins (CORE PASSAGE CHAPTER)
Verses 1-14 are treated exhaustively in Part 1 above. Additional load-bearing terms from 12:15-51:
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| leaven חָמֵץ (chametz) fermented dough/leavening agent | leaven, yeast | Contrasted with matzah; leaven becomes the NT’s standing symbol for corrupting sin (1 Cor 5:6-8) — the prohibition here plants that symbolic seed. | खमीर | Medium |
| cut off (from Israel) נִכְרְתָה (nikhretah) to be cut off, excluded | cut off, excluded from the community | Covenant participation carries real boundaries — the Passover is not open to casual or disobedient participation; anticipates later exclusion/discipline themes in the church. | इस्राएल से अलग कर दिया जाना | Medium |
| mixed multitude עֵרֶב רַב (‘erev rav) a mixed crowd | mixed multitude, mixed crowd | Non-Israelites accompanying the Exodus — an early hint of the Gentile-inclusion trajectory later fulfilled in Christ, resonant with the baseline “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles” doctrine. | मिली हुई भीड़ | Low |
| night of vigil/watching לֵיל שִׁמֻּרִים (leyl shimurim) night of watchings | night the LORD kept watch, night of vigil | God’s own wakeful, protective watching over his people on the decisive night — reinforces “providence” (baseline परमेश्वर का विधान). | जागते रहने की रात | Medium |
| circumcision (required for Passover participation) מוּל (mul) circumcise | circumcision | Reuses the baseline term खतना exactly (Romans/Galatians); the covenant sign of Abraham gates access to the Passover meal, tying the Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants together. | खतना | Medium — reuse baseline exactly. |
| one law for native and stranger תּוֹרָה אֶחָת (torah echat) one law/instruction | one law | Equal covenant standing for the sojourner who joins Israel through circumcision — an early “no distinction” principle later echoed in Rom 3:22 and Gal 3:28. | एक ही व्यवस्था | High — resonates with the baseline “universal_scope_of_gospel” doctrine; must not be softened. |
Chapter 13 — Consecration of the Firstborn; the Pillar of Cloud and Fire
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| consecrate/sanctify to me all the firstborn קַדֶּשׁ־לִי כׇל־בְּכוֹר (qadesh-li kol-bekhor) set apart to me | sanctify to me, consecrate to me | Extends the Passover’s firstborn-substitution principle into a perpetual dedication law — every firstborn belongs to God by right of redemption. | मेरे लिये सब पहलौठों को पवित्र ठहरा | High — ties पवित्र (baseline) directly to पहलौठा; keep both terms consistent. |
| redeem (firstborn donkey) פָּדָה (padah) to redeem, ransom, buy back | redeem | A second Hebrew redemption-root (distinct from ga’al) used specifically for ransoming what is consecrated but not sacrificed — theologically parallel to Christ’s ransom (λύτρον) language. | छुटकारा देना / मूल्य देकर छुड़ाना | High — keep terminologically aligned with छुटकारा (baseline redemption) despite the distinct Hebrew root, since both converge on the same doctrine. |
| pillar of cloud / pillar of fire עַמּוּד עָנָן / עַמּוּד אֵשׁ (amud anan / amud esh) column of cloud / column of fire | pillar of cloud, pillar of fire | The visible, guiding form of God’s own presence journeying with his people — an early manifestation of the “Tabernacle and God’s Presence” doctrine, prior to the Tabernacle’s construction. | बादल का खम्भा / आग का खम्भा | Medium |
Chapter 14 — Crossing the Red Sea
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ”the LORD will fight for you” יהוה יִלָּחֶם לָכֶם YHWH will fight for you | the LORD will fight for you | Salvation is entirely God’s action; Israel is commanded only to “stand firm” (v.13) — a template for the grace-not-works doctrine developed fully in the NT. | यहोवा तुम्हारी ओर से लड़ेगा | High |
| salvation יְשׂוּעָה (yeshuah) deliverance, salvation, victory | salvation, deliverance | ”See the salvation of the LORD” (14:13) — the first explicit “salvation” vocabulary in the book, directly behind the NT σωτηρία and the baseline उद्धार term. | उद्धार | Critical — reuse baseline उद्धार exactly; NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष. This is the historical root-event of the doctrine the whole canon later calls “salvation.” |
| the sea split בָּקַע (baqa) to split, cleave | divided, split | A literal, historical, once-for-all act of deliverance — not a metaphor and not a repeatable ritual reenactment of liberation. | पानी का बँट जाना | Low |
Chapter 15 — The Song of Moses; Marah; “The LORD Who Heals”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| salvation יְשׂוּעָה (yeshuah) see ch. 14 | salvation | ”The LORD… has become my salvation” (15:2) — celebratory confession of the same doctrine, now in worship-song form. | उद्धार | Critical — reuse exactly. |
| majestic in holiness נֶאְדָּר בַּקֹּדֶשׁ (ne’dar baqodesh) glorious/majestic in holiness | majestic in holiness, glorious in holiness | God’s holiness is not merely ethical purity but awe-inspiring, incomparable majesty — direct feed into the “Holiness and Fear of the Lord” doctrine. | पवित्रता में महान | High — ties पवित्र and महिमा together; keep both baseline terms visible in the rendering. |
| the LORD who heals you יהוה רֹפְאֶךָ (YHWH ropheka) YHWH your healer | the LORD who heals you | A revelatory Name-title (paired with यहोवा) disclosing God’s covenant character as sustainer, not merely deliverer. | यहोवा जो तुझे चंगा करता है | Medium |
Chapter 16 — Manna and Quail; the Sabbath Introduced
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| manna מָן (man) “What is it?” (folk etymology) | manna, bread from heaven | Daily, gift-given provision requiring daily trust — the typological background of Christ’s “I am the bread of life” (Jn 6:31-35). | मन्ना | Medium — established transliteration; flag the “bread from heaven” resonance for future Gospel-of-John curriculum linkage. |
| glory of the LORD (in the cloud) כְּבוֹד יהוה (kevod YHWH) the weighty, visible presence of YHWH | the glory of the LORD | First appearance in Exodus of this exact phrase, later climaxing at Ex 40:34-35 — the “Tabernacle and God’s Presence” doctrine’s key term. | यहोवा की महिमा | High — reuse baseline महिमा exactly; keep फ्रेज़ यहोवा की महिमा consistent from this first occurrence through ch. 40. |
| Sabbath (introduced via manna) שַׁבָּת (shabbat) rest, cessation | Sabbath, rest day | Rest as covenant provision and command, rooted in creation (Gen 2) and reaffirmed as a sign of trust in God’s provision rather than anxious self-provision. | सब्त | Medium — established transliteration. |
Chapter 17 — Water from the Rock; War with Amalek
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Massah / Meribah מַסָּה / מְרִיבָה ”testing” / “quarreling” | Massah, Meribah | Place-names memorializing Israel’s testing of God rather than trusting him — a recurring negative example cited later (Ps 95:8; Heb 3:8). | मस्सा / मरीबा | Low — transliterated proper names. |
| ”The LORD is my Banner” יהוה נִסִּי (YHWH Nissi) YHWH is my banner/rallying-standard | the LORD is my banner | A memorial altar-name confessing that victory belongs to God alone. | यहोवा निस्सी (यहोवा मेरा झण्डा है) | Medium |
Chapter 18 — Jethro’s Counsel
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| God-fearing, trustworthy men יִרְאֵי אֱלֹהִים (yirei elohim) fearers of God | God-fearing men | The qualification for judicial leadership is reverence for God, not birth-status or caste — directly relevant to the “Holiness and Fear of the Lord” doctrine and to Indian caste-based leadership assumptions. | परमेश्वर का भय माननेवाले | High |
Chapter 19 — Arrival at Sinai; “A Kingdom of Priests and a Holy Nation”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| kingdom of priests and a holy nation מַמְלֶכֶת כֹּהֲנִים וְגוֹי קָדוֹשׁ (mamlekhet kohanim vegoy qadosh) priestly kingdom, holy people | kingdom of priests, holy nation | Israel’s corporate identity — every member, not a hereditary priestly caste alone, mediates and represents God; directly quoted of the church in 1 Peter 2:9. | याजकों का राज्य और पवित्र जाति | Critical — must not be read through an Indian Brahmin-caste lens in which priesthood is hereditary and exclusive to a sub-group; the text asserts corporate priesthood of the WHOLE covenant people, foundational to the NT “priesthood of all believers.” Mandatory theologian review. |
| treasured possession עַם סְגֻלָּה (am segullah) a special/treasured people | treasured possession, special possession | God’s own chosen, cherished people by grace/election, not by merit — ties to the baseline “election” (परमेश्वर का चुनाव) doctrine. | निज प्रजा | High |
| consecrate the people קִדֵּשׁ (qiddesh) to make holy, set apart | consecrate, sanctify | Reuses the पवित्र root; the whole people, not only Moses or priests, must be set apart before encountering God at Sinai. | पवित्र करना | High — reuse baseline sanctification vocabulary. |
Chapter 20 — The Ten Commandments
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| the Ten Commandments / Ten Words עֲשֶׂרֶת הַדְּבָרִים (aseret hadevarim) the ten words/matters | Ten Commandments, Decalogue | The covenant’s foundational stipulations, given directly by the Redeemer-God who has already acted (20:2, “I am the LORD who brought you out”) — obedience follows redemption, it does not earn it. | दस आज्ञाएँ | High — must not be presented as a merit-earning code detached from v.2’s redemption-preamble; the grace-then-law order is doctrinally load-bearing. |
| jealous God קַנָּא (qanna) jealous, zealous (for exclusive loyalty) | jealous | God demands exclusive covenant loyalty and tolerates no rival — directly confronts polytheistic accommodation. | जलन रखनेवाला परमेश्वर | High — must be glossed to distinguish covenantal, righteous exclusivity from petty human envy, and to make clear this is not “one strong preference among acceptable options” in a pluralistic religious landscape but an absolute claim to sole worship. |
Chapter 21 — Laws on Servants and Personal Injury
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| servant/slave עֶבֶד (eved) servant, slave, bondservant | servant, slave, bondservant | Mosaic law regulates and limits (rather than either endorsing or immediately abolishing) servitude, distinct from unregulated chattel slavery elsewhere in the ancient world — background for the baseline “slavery” (दासत्व) term-family reused from Galatians. | दास | Medium — reuse baseline दास/दासत्व vocabulary. |
| eye for eye עַיִן תַּחַת עַיִן (‘ayin tachat ‘ayin) eye in place of eye | eye for eye, lex talionis | Proportional judicial retribution, restraining private vengeance under a court system, not license for personal revenge (contrast baseline “wrath_of_god” note distinguishing righteous judgment from बदला/personal revenge). | आँख के बदले आँख | Medium |
Chapter 22 — Property Laws and Social Responsibility
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| restitution שָׁלֵם (shalem) to make whole, repay, restore | restitution, repay in full | Wrongs are to be actively repaired, not merely punished — justice restores wholeness (shalem shares a root with shalom/peace). | पूरा-पूरा भर देना | Medium |
| sojourner/stranger גֵּר (ger) resident alien, sojourner | stranger, sojourner, foreigner | ”You shall not wrong a sojourner… for you were sojourners in Egypt” — Israel’s own history of oppression grounds compassionate ethics toward outsiders. | परदेशी | Medium |
Chapter 23 — Justice, Sabbath, the Three Feasts, the Angel of the LORD
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Angel of the LORD מַלְאַךְ יהוה (malak YHWH) messenger of YHWH | angel of the LORD, my Angel | God’s own commissioned presence going before Israel (23:20-23), bearing his Name and authority to forgive or not forgive sin — widely regarded as a possible pre-incarnate appearance of the Son (a Christophany). | यहोवा का दूत | High — render literally; do not resolve the Christophany question within the translated text itself (parallel to the baseline’s handling of the contested “israel_of_god” referent), but flag for mandatory theologian review given the term’s unique authority (“my Name is in him,” v.21) that exceeds an ordinary created angel. |
Chapter 24 — Covenant Ratification; the Blood of the Covenant
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Book of the Covenant סֵפֶר הַבְּרִית (sefer haberit) scroll/document of the covenant | Book of the Covenant | The written record of covenant stipulations, publicly read and accepted — covenant is a real, binding, documented relationship, not vague sentiment. | वाचा की पुस्तक | Medium — reuse baseline वाचा exactly. |
| blood of the covenant דַּם־הַבְּרִית (dam-haberit) covenant-ratifying blood | blood of the covenant | Blood seals the Sinai covenant (24:8) — directly quoted by Jesus at the Last Supper (Matt 26:28) to describe the New Covenant; this Hindi phrase MUST be identical to whatever rendering the Gospels curriculum uses for that verse. | वाचा का लहू | Critical — cross-curriculum verbatim-match rule required, parallel to the baseline’s shared-citation rule for Galatians/Romans OT quotations. |
| the glory of the LORD like a devouring fire כְּבוֹד יהוה כְּאֵשׁ אֹכֶלֶת YHWH’s glory like consuming fire | glory… like a devouring fire | The visible manifestation of holiness and danger surrounding God’s presence on the mountain — reinforces “Holiness and Fear of the Lord.” | यहोवा की महिमा भस्म करनेवाली आग के समान | High |
Chapter 25 — Tabernacle Offering; the Ark and the Mercy Seat
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| offering/contribution תְּרוּמָה (terumah) a lifted/set-apart contribution | offering, contribution | Voluntary, God-invited giving toward his own dwelling-place among his people. | भेंट | Medium |
| ark of the covenant אֲרוֹן הָעֵדוּת (aron ha’edut) chest/box of the testimony | ark of the covenant, ark of the testimony | The central cultic object housing the covenant tablets and, later, mediating atonement via its cover — direct forerunner of the “Tabernacle and God’s Presence” doctrine. | वाचा का सन्दूक | High |
| mercy seat כַּפֹּרֶת (kapporet) the covering/place of atonement | mercy seat, atonement cover | The precise location where atoning blood is applied (Lev 16) and where God meets Israel’s mediator — this is the exact Hebrew referent behind the LXX ἱλαστήριον already fixed in the baseline as “mercy_seat” (प्रायश्चित्त का ढकना). | प्रायश्चित्त का ढकना | Critical — reuse baseline rendering exactly (do not retranslate); this is the OT source-referent for the baseline’s Romans 3:25 propitiation caution, and must be handled with the same theologian-review requirement: God himself designates and provides the place of atonement, not human ritual manipulation. |
| cherubim כְּרוּבִים (keruvim) winged heavenly beings | cherubim | Guardian figures flanking the mercy seat, framing but not constituting an idol — must not be read as comparable to Hindu deity-images (murtis) receiving worship; the cherubim themselves are never objects of veneration. | करूब (बहुवचन: करूबों) | Medium |
| lampstand מְנוֹרָה (menorah) lamp-holder | lampstand, menorah | Continual light in God’s dwelling — later NT imagery of Christ/church as light draws on this furnishing. | दीवट | Low |
Chapter 26 — The Tabernacle Structure and the Veil
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| tabernacle מִשְׁכָּן (mishkan) dwelling-place | tabernacle | God’s chosen dwelling among his people by his own gracious initiative — the term must never be rendered मंदिर (temple/shrine housing an image), consistent with the baseline’s explicit rejection of मंदिर for “church.” | निवास-स्थान | High — distinct from the baseline “church” (कलीसिया) entry, but shares its caution against मंदिर; God dwells with his people by grace, not because a human-made structure contains or localizes him as an idol-shrine would. |
| veil פָּרֹכֶת (parokhet) curtain, screen | veil, curtain | Separates the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies, marking restricted access to God’s immediate presence — its later tearing at Christ’s death (Matt 27:51; Heb 10:20) is anticipated here as a term that must remain consistent across the whole canon-spanning curriculum. | परदा | High — flag for cross-curriculum consistency with the future Hebrews/Gospels treatment of the torn veil. |
Chapter 27 — The Bronze Altar and Courtyard
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| altar מִזְבֵּח (mizbeach) place of slaughter/sacrifice | altar | The site of sacrificial atonement, distinct from Hindu havan-kund (fire-altar for yajna) in that it functions within a system where God himself has prescribed the substitute and the means, not one where the worshipper’s ritual technique manipulates divine favor. | वेदी | Medium-High |
| continual lamp oil נֵר תָּמִיד (ner tamid) perpetual lamp | continually burning lamp | Uninterrupted worship and presence-maintenance — no new distinct doctrinal risk beyond the तामिद (“continual”) theme echoed at Ex 30 (incense) and Ex 29 (offerings). | नित्य जलनेवाला दिया | Low |
Chapter 28 — Priestly Garments; “Holy to the LORD”
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ephod אֵפוֹד (ephod) a priestly vestment | ephod | Specialized high-priestly garment; transliterated technical term. | एफोद | Low — transliteration; flag for native speaker review as unfamiliar vocabulary. |
| breastpiece of judgment חֹשֶׁן מִשְׁפָּט (choshen mishpat) breast-ornament of judgment | breastpiece, breastplate of judgment | Bears the tribes’ names over the high priest’s heart before God — representative mediation embodied in clothing. | न्याय की सीना-पट्टिका | Medium |
| Urim and Thummim אוּרִים וְתֻמִּים ”lights and perfections” (traditional gloss) | Urim and Thummim | Objects used for divine guidance through the high priest — must not be assimilated to Hindu astrological divination tools; they operate within the unique covenant-mediation office of the high priest under God’s sovereign disclosure. | ऊरीम और तूमीम | Medium — transliterate; flag for translator note distinguishing from divination/astrology. |
| Holy to the LORD קֹדֶשׁ לַיהוה (qodesh la-YHWH) set apart to YHWH | Holy to the LORD | The engraved plate on the high priest’s turban — the clearest one-line summary of the entire “Holiness” doctrine, applied concretely to a person’s head/mind before God. | यहोवा के लिये पवित्र | High — reuse पवित्र + यहोवा exactly; the phrase functions as a doctrinal title, keep wording fixed across every occurrence (also echoed at Ex 39:30). |
Chapter 29 — Consecration of the Priests
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ordination/consecration (“filling of the hand”) מִלֻּאִים (milluim) filling, ordination | ordination, consecration | Priests are set apart to mediate by a God-prescribed rite, not by self-appointment or hereditary caste-claim alone. | याजकों का अभिषेक / पवित्र ठहराना | High |
| sin offering / burnt offering חַטָּאת / עֹלָה (chattat / olah) sin-offering / that-which-goes-up (wholly burnt) | sin offering / burnt offering | Distinct sacrificial categories addressing sin’s guilt (chattat) versus total consecrated devotion (olah) — the sacrificial system’s grammar, later fulfilled and ended in Christ (Heb 10:1-14). | पापबलि / होमबलि | High — established Hindi Bible sacrificial vocabulary; must be kept terminologically distinct from generic बलिदान to preserve the system’s internal categories. |
Chapter 30 — Incense Altar, Atonement Money, Anointing Oil
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ransom/atonement money כֹּפֶר (kopher) a covering price, ransom | ransom, atonement money | Census-related payment “to make atonement for your lives” (30:15-16) — an economic enactment of the atonement principle, feeding the same theological root as כַּפֹּרֶת (kapporet, mercy seat) and the baseline “propitiation”/“redemption” entries. | प्रायश्चित्त की कीमत | High — must not read as a magical apotropaic fee; God himself appoints this means as atonement, echoing the propitiation caution already flagged in the baseline. |
| holy anointing oil שֶׁמֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה (shemen hamishchah) oil of anointing | holy anointing oil | Consecrates priests, tabernacle, and vessels alike — the root מָשַׁח (mashach, anoint) underlies “Messiah/מסיח” (baseline Critical term); every anointing in Exodus is a distant echo of the ultimate Anointed One. | पवित्र अभिषेक का तेल | High |
Chapter 31 — Bezalel and Oholiab; the Sabbath Sign
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spirit of God (craftsmanship) רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים (ruach elohim) God’s Spirit/breath | Spirit of God | God’s own Spirit empowers skilled craftsmanship for building his dwelling — the same divine Spirit named elsewhere as पवित्र आत्मा (baseline), functioning here in a distinct redemptive-historical mode (task-specific empowerment) rather than the fuller NT indwelling/regenerating ministry. | परमेश्वर का आत्मा | Medium-High — must not imply two different spirits; note continuity with, and functional distinction from, the baseline’s पवित्र आत्मा (Critical) entry for future systematic-theology cross-referencing. |
| sign (Sabbath as covenant sign) אוֹת (ot) see 12:13 | sign, token | The Sabbath itself functions as a perpetual covenant sign between God and Israel — reuse the established चिन्ह rendering. | चिन्ह | High — reuse consistent rendering. |
Chapter 32 — The Golden Calf
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| golden calf עֵגֶל מַסֵּכָה (‘egel massekah) molten/cast calf | golden calf, molten calf | Israel’s paradigmatic act of idolatry, immediately after receiving the Ten Commandments — links directly to the baseline मूर्तिपूजा entry. | सोने का बछड़ा | High |
| idolatry (see above) — | idolatry | Reuse baseline मूर्तिपूजा exactly. | मूर्तिपूजा | High — reuse baseline exactly. |
| stiff-necked people עַם־קְשֵׁה־עֹרֶף (am-qesheh-oreph) a people hard/stiff of neck | stiff-necked people | An idiom for stubborn covenant resistance, not mere personality trait — must retain its covenant-breaking force. | हठी प्रजा | Medium |
| Moses’ intercession (root: פָּלַל, palal, to intercede/pray) to intercede, plead | Moses interceded | Moses stands between God’s wrath and the guilty people, pleading on the basis of God’s own covenant promises — direct forerunner of Christ’s mediatorial intercession; reuse baseline मध्यस्थता exactly. | मध्यस्थता करना | High — reuse baseline exactly; connects to “Moses as Mediator” doctrine. |
Chapter 33 — Moses Intercedes Further; God’s Presence and Glory
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| my presence/face פָּנַי (panai) my face | my presence, my face | God’s personal, relational nearness, granted or withheld by his own free decision — must not be equated with Hindu darshan theology (a devotee’s visionary sight of a deity’s image granting merit); here God’s “face” is his own gracious self-disclosure to Moses specifically, not a ritual sight attainable by devotee effort. | मेरी उपस्थिति / मेरा मुख | High — cross-reference the baseline “revelation” entry’s caution against दर्शन. |
| tent of meeting אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד (ohel moed) tent of appointed meeting | tent of meeting | A distinct term from mishkan, used for the site of ongoing divine-human meeting/consultation prior to and alongside the completed Tabernacle. | मिलापवाला तम्बू | Medium — keep lexically distinct from निवास-स्थान (mishkan). |
| glory כָּבוֹד (kavod) weighty presence/honor | glory | Reuse baseline महिमा exactly; Moses’ request “show me your glory” (33:18) and God’s gracious, self-limited answer (33:19-23) frame the character-revelation of ch. 34. | महिमा | High — reuse baseline exactly. |
Chapter 34 — Covenant Renewed; God’s Self-Proclaimed Character; Moses’ Shining Face
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| merciful and gracious רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן (rachum ve-chanun) compassionate and gracious | merciful and gracious | Part of God’s self-proclaimed Name-character (34:6-7), the fullest character-revelation in the Pentateuch, echoed throughout the Psalms and prophets. | दयालु और अनुग्रहकारी | Critical — this is Exodus’s single densest character-of-God verse; अनुग्रह (not कृपा) should anchor “gracious” here given the weight of unmerited favor being asserted as God’s own self-description, while दयालु conveys compassion; mandatory theologian review with translator note. |
| slow to anger אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם (erekh apayim) long of nostrils (patient) | slow to anger | God’s patience precedes and enables covenant renewal after the golden-calf rebellion. | धीरज रखनेवाला / विलम्ब से क्रोध करनेवाला | High |
| steadfast love חֶסֶד (chesed) covenant loyalty-love | steadfast love, lovingkindness, mercy | God’s unbreakable, covenant-bound faithfulness-love — must be distinguished from the Hindu devotional concept of करुणा (compassion) as an emotional attribute untethered to covenant obligation; chesed is love that keeps promises. | करुणा | Critical — mandatory translator note on first occurrence distinguishing covenant-bound loyalty-love from generic bhakti-style compassion; must not be confused with baseline अनुग्रह (grace) or दया (mercy) though closely related — treat as its own entry. |
| faithfulness אֱמֶת (emet) truth, faithfulness, reliability | faithfulness, truth | Paired with chesed; God’s character is not only loving but utterly reliable. | सच्चाई / सत्यता | Medium |
| forgiving iniquity … yet visiting iniquity נֹשֵׂא עָוֹן … פֹּקֵד עָוֹן bearing/lifting guilt … visiting/punishing guilt | forgiving iniquity… by no means clearing the guilty | Holds forgiveness and justice together without contradiction — the theological seed later resolved fully at the cross (Rom 3:25-26). | अपराध को क्षमा करनेवाला … दोषी को दण्ड देनेवाला | High |
| Moses’ shining face קָרַן (qaran) to shine, radiate (traditionally, though sometimes rendered “horned,” a historic mistranslation) | Moses’ face shone, radiance | Reflected glory from exposure to God’s presence — must be rendered “shone/radiated,” never “grew horns,” correcting a well-known historic mistranslation (cf. Michelangelo’s Moses). | मूसा का मुख चमकना | Medium — flag explicitly to avoid the “horns” mistranslation. |
Chapter 35 — Freewill Offerings for the Tabernacle
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| willing/generous heart נְדִיב לֵב (nediv lev) generous of heart | willing heart, generous heart | The tabernacle is built from freely-given, joyful offerings, not compulsion — an OT anticipation of 2 Cor 9:7’s “cheerful giver” principle. | मन की उमंग / स्वेच्छा से भेंट | Low-Medium |
All other terms in chapter 35 reuse the offering/tabernacle vocabulary already established in chs. 25-31 (तराव, वाचा का सन्दूक, दीवट, वेदी, अभिषेक का तेल, एफोद, etc.); no further new theological vocabulary.
Chapter 36 — Construction of the Tabernacle Structure
No new theological vocabulary; reuses ch. 26 terms (निवास-स्थान, परदा) describing the physical construction execution of the plans already given.
Chapter 37 — Construction of the Ark, Table, Lampstand, Incense Altar
No new theological vocabulary; reuses ch. 25 and ch. 30 terms (वाचा का सन्दूक, प्रायश्चित्त का ढकना, दीवट, धूप की वेदी) describing the execution of the furnishings already specified.
Chapter 38 — Construction of the Bronze Altar, Basin, and Courtyard
Reuses ch. 27 and ch. 30 terms (वेदी, हौद). One minor detail worth noting: the bronze basin (כִּיּוֹר, kiyor) is made from the mirrors donated by the women of the community (38:8) — a low-risk narrative/cultural detail, no new doctrinal term. Hindi: हौद (basin/laver) — Low.
Chapter 39 — Construction of the Priestly Garments
Reuses ch. 28 terms (एफोद, न्याय की सीना-पट्टिका, यहोवा के लिये पवित्र). The recurring refrain “as the LORD commanded Moses” (כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יהוה אֶת־מֹשֶׁה) is repeated throughout — a low-risk but theologically resonant refrain underscoring exact obedience to revealed instruction (no addition, no omission), consistent with the “Mosaic Covenant and Law” doctrine. Hindi: जैसा यहोवा ने मूसा को आज्ञा दी थी — Low-Medium.
Chapter 40 — The Tabernacle Erected; the Glory Fills the Dwelling
| Terms | Variants | Theological meaning | Hindi | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle כְּבוֹד יהוה מָלֵא אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּן (kevod YHWH malei et-hamishkan) YHWH’s glory filled the dwelling | the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle | The climactic fulfillment of the entire book’s trajectory — God comes to dwell visibly and permanently among his redeemed, covenant people. Conceptual ancestor of John 1:14 (“the Word became flesh and tabernacled [ἐσκήνωσεν, from σκηνή/mishkan] among us”), a link that should be flagged for consistency when the Gospel of John curriculum is produced. | यहोवा की महिमा ने निवास-स्थान को भर दिया | Critical — the doctrinal climax of “The Tabernacle and God’s Presence”; reuse महिमा and यहोवा exactly; mandatory theologian review with a translator note anticipating the Johannine “tabernacled among us” cross-reference. |
| cloud covered / Moses could not enter עָנָן כִּסָּה (anan kissah) the cloud covered | the cloud covered it | God’s presence is both gift and holy danger — even Moses, the mediator, is excluded when the glory-cloud is in full manifestation, reinforcing rather than contradicting the “Holiness and Fear of the Lord” doctrine at the book’s close. | बादल ने ढांप लिया | High |
This document must be read together with 08_core_glossary.md, which consolidates every term above into a single per-term glossary table with risk tiers and baseline-reuse flags for Phase 2 enforcement.
